I don't know what it is about the word but the title "angler", as a chapter name or episode or character title or whatever, used early on in some series or story is always bold and it promises greatness, the magnus archives for example. it's so odd and unprofound of a beginning that it is kind of promising something amazing, it's almost a ballsy beginning. my reasoning is very shaky but I've seen it a few times and it's consistent and I have no clue why

sometimes i think about the fact that jeff bezos went to space, saw the entirety of humanity in one small sphere, a complete, cascading view of all of our achievements and failures, all life and death, scars and healing encapsulated in one set of eyes, spinning gently in the endless blackness, and came back to earth having learned nothing at all

I should be sleeping but I just figured out how they could have drastically improved the ending of season 5 with very little effort: What if the fight between Bug Noir and Hawkmoth had not taken place in the kitchen, but in Adrien's room?
Even assuming that the rest of the script stays the same, it would have given so many opportunities. Being in Adrien's space, but without him, would give all sorts of thematic implications and make us feel like his absence was a deliberate narrative choice. Destroying it over the course of their fight would be symbolically destroying his prison, and also showing how Gabriel destroys him, at the same time (bonus points for destroying the prison-bar-like windows).
Plus, you could have done so much with the lighting. The Kitchen fight just doesn't look all that good with its black and white tiles and bright white light. This is especially notable because the episode before, with the theatre production, was the prettiest ML episode ever thanks to all the creative lighting.
In Adrien's room, you have more light and shadow and colors anyway, but you could have really played with bathing the scene in an evening glow, in a thunderstorm, or turning it to night slowly. All the people fighting outside could also have seen the light effects coming from there, making the fight in the house much more connected to the outside.
I'm not saying that would have fixed all the issues I had with the finale, let alone all the issues people have had with the finale, but I think it would have been a much stronger move.

also the whole symbolism of the strike and how it reflects the difference between simon and wille's circumstances??
hillerska doesn't take the strike seriously- it's something fun and gimmicky almost; a party instead of a protest. they know they're going to win. they have rich parents they can threaten the school with and have never been told no for more than a few weeks in their lives.
wille can afford to join in, he can give into peer pressure and take the easy way out. even if simon tries to point out the irony of the whole situation, this is what he's comfortable with, and a "stand" the crown won't say anything about. hell, simon even shares food with him when he gets hungry while the others are laughing over auctioning food.
henry says ar one point "if I knew it would be a hunger strike, I wouldn't have done it" and cincent admits he didn't think it'd take this long. these people have no idea how long it take real change to happen. they don't have a concept of what suffering for a cause or belief is, and felice and wille are included in that. this is why he has such a hard time listening and understanding what simon's trying to say.
simon can't afford to do that, both because he thinks the strike is stupid and hypocritical, and because he can't risk getting suspended. he doesn't have rich parents; his only real solid connection to this world is wille, who's choosing to go with the crowd. he's the one getting mocked for taking part in a worker's day demonstration while his ideas and beliefs are used by vincent to get their way and complain.
speaking of the demonstration, that's real life for simon. it's not trivial things like getting your phone taken away or not getting a fancy graduation. he's had to work since he was 14, his mother has to work to feed them, and he faces elitism and classism every day. it's not something he can choose to look away from or join in just for fun.
it reflects wille and simon's attitudes about everything that's happened. their clashes are based on fundamental differences in their view of how the world works. wille has learned that following what tradition says or what the majority says is the most neutral answer that keeps him out of trouble. it's very, very hard for him to break out of that mindset, even when he's trying and even when he has made an effort. simon needs to fight for himself and fight a vast majority because this is his life. wille isn't the one who might have to move or the one deleting his social media or having rocks thrown through windows treated like it's not a big deal.

something I’ve been thinking about is like, the internet is this magical system of technologies, never before seen in human history, and one of its capabilities is to answer virtually any question you ask of it. Which is not even remotely a novel observation obviously lol. But I’m thinking about this in the context of a point that Adorno & Horkheimer made (in The Culture Industry I think?) about the radio: that to expedience the radio, to live in a social context where there is this vast incomprehensible system of technological infrastructure that you do not understand or control, and which allows you, a mere peasant, to listen to news broadcasts, music, and advertisements, is effectively like listening to the voice of god. Like the average person’s relationship to modern telecommunications is so mystifying, incomprehensible, and abstract that we experience technologies like the radio as an all-powerful, indestructible authority, and this (obviously) shapes our relationship to the information that is shared through it. People make jokes on here about how transmission towers are angels, but like tbh that is essentially how we experience them - vast, incomprehensible, highly dangerous objects whose impact on our lives are at once all-consuming and unknowable. We do not just turn on the radio and listen to the news, we tune into what the voice of god has to say today - right now he’s selling toilet cleanser!
and all that to say, I always find something a bit incomplete about discussions about wilful ignorance online - that we live in an age of mass information and yet people still seem as ignorant as feudal peasants, or whatever. Nobody googles things, nobody tries to branch out and experience new kinds of art, nobody educates themselves on important topics they don’t understand. and like this frustration is very real and well taken, I feel it frequently, but what I’m grappling with is whether this is the correct framing - that maybe “why don’t people just google things” is the wrong question to ask, because I tend to find the explanations offered unsatisfactory. Like specifically I’m thinking of discussions on here that are about like, “anti-intellectualism”, kids these days are so ignorant even though they grew up with the internet, reading comprehension is piss poor, and so on. Recently I’ve seen a lot of weirdly moral-panicky posts about children not knowing how to type on computers because back in my day we were forced to learn how to touch-type by age 8 even though we couldn’t look up any tutorials on YouTube to help us, etc etc. And like I just do not buy that people are individually choosing to be ignorant, that people are “getting dumber,” and that this state of getting dumber is inversely related to the amount of information we have access to (which makes “getting dumber” even more dumb). An unstated assumption that goes into a lot of these “anti-intellectualism” discussions is that “information” is this universal object that has a standardised enlightening effect on the people who interact with it - that the only reason to have an ignorant, sheltered, or ill-formed opinion on something is because you have individually chosen not to Look At Information that will cure you of your ignorance. And so going back to the god radio thing, having regular access to the google search bar is not just having access to an encyclopaedia or dictionary - it is like having a direct line of communication to god, this authority that can answer any question you ask of it. But it’s not just one answer, it’s many answers, more answers than you could ever possibly read through. Google reports the number of hits it returns for whatever you type in - you will regularly get millions of answers to your question. And these answers are embedded with advertisements, just as radio news broadcasts are. Like if god is selling you toilet cleanser while telling you the number for a suicide hotline or news about what’s happening in the world, how do you psychologically deal with that, how is your relationship to capital-I Information shaped by this relationship?
The corollary to “we live in an age of mass information” is “we live in an age of mass misinformation,” but they both show up as answers on google (again, not a novel observation). but in the face of that how do you not simply stop asking questions? & of course this decision to stop asking questions is given form and substance by social circumstance, it reinforces systemic privileges and violences, and so this decision is not one free from consequence, and in many cases it is not an innocent decision. a white person deciding not to read the news because it’s too hard to figure out what is happening/too frightening/etc has the consequence of reinforcing the white supremacist outlook that is foundational to the social context of white people because they’re not reading anything that challenges that outlook. ignorance has many social contexts and many of them are violent. etc. like the consequence of “why does nobody google anything” is just a continuation of the status quo, just with this supposedly glaring and easy fix to it (simply google it). but that just leads us back to a discourse of individual choice, of people individually choosing not to “google shit.” it is a deeply individual fix to a systematic social problem. and so maybe the question is not, why doesn’t anyone google shit, but rather, why is the primary delivery system of knowledge a god that sells you toilet cleanser

thinking about that interview with Neil and David talking a out how Crowley has been basically the same since Eden and its Aziraphale who has a lot to learn throughout their story
specifically in relation to how, on the surface, Crowley changes so much - his name, his hair, his style, his gender - and so flippantly. The security of him knowing his place, knowing the part he's willing to plays in the games between heaven and hell, gives him the freedom to change the set dressing around his own solid core. But it's also a little act of defiance, choosing who he is even when he knows he's locked into a role he doesn't always want to play
and how Aziraphale is so steadfast in his presentation while being so often unsure of himself and how he fits into the structure of heaven. How the ideas that he holds central in his own identity are so often put into question so he constructs something reliable and certain around him - not only his clothes but his routines and building himself the homebase where he collects things that will last, a place where he's the only one who has the power to change the setting
and still Crowley, quick to personal transformation to throw off the staleness of certianty, is drawn to the steadiness Aziraphale brings just as Aziraphale, frightened by his own inner turbulence, is thrilled and excited by Crowley's variety

do u ever sit alone in ur room and imagine what it must feel like to give ur whole heart to someone and to have them just be as gentle as possible with it. do u ever sit there and wonder abt the experience of being loved so incredibly deeply and passionately by someone that they know u better than u know urself. ever question what it's like being that vulnerable with another person and having them return it equally. and just finally, finally, feeling safe being honest and genuine and simply urself with another person. bc i do.

Ok but imagine if Lance Bruner (Bruce’s second adopted son in the Earth-One continuity) was canon again and Bruce, Dick, and Alfred just never bring him up around the others.
Tim, walking around the gardens outside the manor, finds his memorial and is like Bruce??? Who’s this for??? And Bruce is just like “oh, my second son, Lance. He tried to avenge Dick when he was shot as Robin and was shot himself,” like it’s common knowledge.
Later that night Tim calls Jason and goes, “Did you know Bruce had a kid between you and Dick? And he also died as Robin?”
Jason’s cry of “what the fuck Bruce” is heard all the way in Bristol
