Which author (famous or not) is your greatest writing influence?....hmm...
“Which author (famous or not) is your greatest writing influence?” That’s the question I stumbled across when I was scrolling through Facebook recently. (Yes, I know I should have been writing and not wasting time scrolling!) I paused to think… I went and stood in front of my bookshelves and gazed at the familiar titles, remembering scenes and characters from many of them fondly. After a few…

Hello everyone and welcome to another #stacksaturday where I’m revealing five books I’m going to be reading very soon. This doesn’t include books I’ve added as a last minute bump for my #wasitworththebump challenge, book club books, buddy reads and any Kindle books I read in between the physical ones but I’m excited to read them all soon. ⁣ ⁣ 😳 The Lost Ones by @anitafrankauthor The first line of the blurb for this book is “some houses are never at peace.” Set in 1917, this historical novel is one I’ve been eagerly anticipating for a while now!⁣ ⁣ 🇰🇪 White Highlands by John McGhie⁣ This intriguing novel is set both in the present day and in Kenya during the 1950’s Mau Mau uprisings. It’s a tale that follows the dark days of British colonial history. ⁣ ⁣ ☀️ The Invincible Summer Of Juniper Jones by Daven McQueen⁣ I can’t wait to read this. It’s a coming of ages story set in the 1950’s about a biracial young boy raised by his white father who moves to another town where his blackness becomes an issue to everyone apart from his new friend Juniper Jones.⁣ ⁣ 🔥 The Stars Are Fire by Anita Shreve ⁣ I don’t know much about this book but from what I can gather it’s the story of a young woman called Grace whom in the 1940’s is tested by a catastrophic event and its aftermath.⁣ ⁣ 🦏 The Crash Of Hennington - Patrick Ness⁣ I’m slowly making my way through Ness’ back catalogue and this was next on my list. It sounds very odd! It’s about a town called Hennington where amongst other happenings, a herd of rhinos have become a public feature. ⁣ ⁣ I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a lovely weekend everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #bookstagrammer #bookstack #tbrpile #tobereadsoon #excitedtoread #anitafrank #thelostones #whitehighlands #johnmcghie #theinvinciblesummerofjuniperjones #davenmcqueen #thestarsarefire #anitashreve #thecrashofhennington #patrickness #readingnext #morebooksplease https://www.instagram.com/p/CPd6Ql0ri3d/?utm_medium=tumblr

Flesh and Bone and Water Jacket design: Lauren Peters-Collaer Art director: Jaya Miceli Scribner * This beautiful book is out now!!! * “#LuizaSauma's debut novel is that rare thing: a completely absorbing, brilliantly-designed, literary work. Her ability to cut across time and continents and to inhabit the physical and inner life of both a young Brazilian and that same man in middle-age is as dazzling as the novel's plot. The reveal, when it comes, is astonishing—sensuous, shocking, and completely earned.”—#AnitaShreve, New York Times bestselling author of #ThePilotsWife and #StellaBain * "#FleshandBoneandWater, is lush and evocative. The secret at the center came as a shocking surprise, and the characters were as haunted as I was. Sip a caipirinha and enjoy.”—#LisaSee, author of #TheTeaGirlofHummingbirdLane * #TheStarsareFire #books #bookstagram #igreads #bookart #bookdesign #booknerd #booknerdigans #bookporn #bookaholic #bookaddict #bibliophile #instabooks #bookish #bookworm #booksofinstagram #bookcover #booklover #booklove #vscoreads #booktube #booktuber

THE STARS ARE FIRE ANITA SHREVE
MY RATING ⭐️⭐️⭐️▫️▫️ PUBLISHER Penguin Random House Audio PUBLISHED May 2, 2017 NARRATOR Suzanne Elise Freeman
A woman’s heart stopping tale of the emotional strength and courage to survive Maine’s October, 1947 devastating fire and all of its’ aftermath.
SUMMARY A fire is consuming the Maine coastline after a summer-long drought. It’s out of control and racing from tree to tree and overtaking one town after another. Grace Holland has two small children, Claire and Tom, and is also five months pregnant. When the fire nears their home at Hunt Beach, Grace is alone with the kids. Her husband, Gene has taken their only car and joined the volunteer firefighters. She is trapped. She and her neighbor, Rosie and Rosie’s two children head to the beach in the middle of the night to get away from the flames. They have no choice but to step into the frigid water. They watch helplessly as their houses, and their community burn to the ground. They spend the freezing night frantically protecting their children by burying them in the wet sand and covering them with wet blankets as the ash and embers floated down around them.
As the sunrises, they are finally rescued, but their lives are forever changed. They are homeless, without resources and anxiously awaiting the fate of their husbands. In the midst of the devastation, and with the help of friends, Grace gathers strength and fortitude and forges a new life for her children and her mother. Grace discovers new freedoms and happiness she never had before. Then the unimaginable happens and Grace has to draw upon her newly found courage and strength.
REVIEW The beginning of the book failed to hold my interest. It starts with Grace hanging laundry in the kitchen, and complaining about the rain. Within the first two chapters at least twelve different characters are introduced. All the names and descriptions of daily routines, house layout and decor was like drinking out of a fire hose. It was difficult to stay focused. So many miscellaneous and ancillary stories seemed to be thrown in the first couple of chapters that my head was spinning trying to understand where the novel was headed.
As the smoke from the fire clears, the story came into better focus. The description of the immense fire and Grace and Rosie’s freezing night on the beach was breath-taking. The story of Grace ‘s fortitude, ingenuity and strength was a delight to read. I could not help but be proud of her growth and how she found a way to survive and take care of her children and mother. And even find some semblance of happiness for a time. Grace does as much as she can for her family, and is smart enough to accept her limitations and walk away when she has to. The book finishes strong and I’m glad I hung in beyond the first several chapters. The read was worth the struggle.

The Stars Are Fire
The Stars Are Fire
I must say that one of the best experiences when reading a book is the sensory aspects. The quiet promise in the bookstore. The smell of a new book. The graphic artistry on the cover. The feel of the page as it turns in your hand. This book has AMAZING artistry on the cover and the page stock is that perfect stiff thickness, just below a cardstock that makes reading and holding the book a treat!…
