Tag someone you want to know better OR just want to say hello to!
I was tagged by @uweiy! Thank you for tagging me, it was fun!
Favourite color: Blue and pink
Last song: Wolf Totem by The Hu. It gives me energy when I need to stay motivated at work.
Last movie: Barbie! I saw it before leaving for vacation and it was incredibly fun, I laughed a lot.
Currently watching: The Legend of Anle. It's really entertaining and the female characters have great action scenes. The dance scenes are so beautiful! I'm also watching The Wheel of Time on the side because I'm curious (and I think that the adaptation is much better than the books).
Currently reading: Jezebel by Megan Barnard. I'm enjoying it so far. The heroine has determination and agency and it's always interesting to see a nuanced portrayal of this vilified queen.
Currently working on: The third chapter of my Shadow and Bone fanfic. I have an outline so it should go smoothly. I also need to proofread chapter 23 of my FE fanfic.
Currently obsessed with: FE OC Week!!! It will start on october 9 and I'm currently writing my last entry. I can't wait to introduce my characters and to see what everyone has in store.
I'm tagging @lilias42, @queenfredegund, @edithlittlegarden, @violets-in-her-arms-writes, @loola-a, @mwezina, @korydweninterim. If you want to do it, of course! No pressure!

26 and 36 for the fanfic writer ask? <3
I love answering asks 😊
26. Are titles for your stories easy to come up with? Yes and no. Music has everything to do with what I'm writing. Each fic has a playlist and each chapter has a song. I usually pull from the song, but sometimes it doesn't fit or I'll come up with something mid chapter that I just HAVE to use. Alone Wolf was easy. Alone No Longer was easy because it's shortened to ANL. The third part of the trilogy was kind of challenging and I struggled for a little bit before settling on Alone Wolf: 1999 because it feels like a bad ass action title 🤷‍♀️
36. What fanfic of yours has the symbolism you're proudest of? It's actually the one I haven't written yet 😭Alone Wolf: 1999 is going to have an insane amount of symbolism from start to finish and I can't wait to get to it.

A new light | chapter one (Elriel)
Tumblr media
Summary:
Azriel Mystic has been in live with his best friend since the moment he met her three years ago. Elain Archeron has been in love with her best friend since the day she moved into his apartment building three years ago. However neither of them have told the other about their feelings. They go through a routine every single day which includes pushing their feelings to the back burner. Azriel is starting to lose his patience though, he’s done waiting and is ready to make a move. Elain however is scared to lose her best friend.
Tiny Dancer interrupted Azriel’s peaceful dream that morning, cutting off the dream he did not want to leave. It was right in the middle flirting with Elain--his best friend--when the classic Elton John song cut through his words. Grumbling he reached out for his phone, answering it without even looking at the caller ID. He knew exactly who was calling him for two reasons. One it was the way he woke up every morning for work because he never set and alarm, and two there was only one person he knew that loved Elton John more than anything.
“I was having a good dream,” Azriel answered the phone in his morning rasp. Elain’s soft chuckle came through the phone along with the slamming of cabinets as she moved around her kitchen.
“Too bad we have to get to work,” Elain answered him and he knew by the sound of her voice she was smiling. Both of them worked as personal assistants, Azriel to his friend Rhys in his law firm and Elain for an interior design company. Both buildings were on opposite sides of the street from the other so the pair of friends tended to walk or take a cab to the office.
“I’ll call in sick,” Azriel said already sitting up and pushing his blankets off his body. He held his phone between his ear and shoulder as he moved around the room to get ready. Lucky for him he had decided on showering the night before after a long night out with his brothers, plus it was casual business attire for him most of the time minus court days.
“Rhys will never let you,” Elain said on the other end.
“Fake it until I make it.”
“You’ll never make it,” Elain said jokingly. Azriel laughed as he pulled out a clean pair of dress pants and a collared shirt from his closet.
“Isn’t my best friend supposed to believe in me at all times?” He teased as he wiggled his way into his pants, still managing to hold the phone in place.
“I do believe in you,” Elain said and he knew there was a “but” coming based off her hesitation. “I also know Rhys and as good as you at getting information your boss is better.” Azriel rolled his eyes even though he knew what she was saying was the truth. He had earned himself the name of “spymaster” among the law firm but it wouldn’t matter when going against his brother. Rhys had a way of knowing every little thing before everyone else, it's what made his such a sought after lawyer.
“Whatever I’ll meet you downstairs in two minutes,” Azriel hung up and finished getting dressed. Another thing about the two of them was that they lived two floors apart in the same building of their apartment complex. It was actually how they met and became friends three years ago.
They were moving in on the same day. Her boyfriend at the time was helping her move everything in while she stood back and directed him. Azriel had been walking up a flight of stairs when he caught them. Elain was smiling and happy while the boyfriend with the red hair groaned and complained the whole time. He thought it was quite comical and told Elain this when they officially met the next day.
Azriel grabbed his keys off the hook by the door. Then stuffed his wallet and phone into his pockets as he headed out of the apartment and downstairs to where Elain waited. She was wearing another sundress today. This one was a bright yellow with little daisies and butterflies spotted all over. The dress was longer than her other ones, ending just below her knee. Her sleeves were ruffled and the dress was a v-neck cut, at the center she wore the necklace she never took off.
The charm on the gold chain was a bouquet of pink lilies tied by a white bow. Azriel had gotten the necklace for the year they met as a christmas present. Since the day Elain had opened the small box and asked him to put it around her neck she had not taken it off. Azriel smiled now just thinking about the memory as he wrapped an arm around his best friend’s shoulders.
“Ready for the office?” He asked smiling down at her. She had to lean back so she could return the smile given the more than a few inches height difference between them.
“Is it bad we haven’t even left but I already wish we were coming home?” Elain asked as they began their trek down the sidewalk. The office building were a few blocks from where they lived and unless it was raining or snowing the duo always walked.
“Just a few more months and then you’ll have enough saved to open your shop,” Azriel said rubbing her shoulders in comfort. The only reason Elain had taken the job she knew she would hate was because of the money. By working with the company as long as she had and saving as much as possible she would have enough to open her business at the beginning of next spring. Elain had told Az about her dream to own a florist shop and considering how Velaris was a hot spot for weddings there would be no shortage of income.
“I think those months are during into years,” she complained as she rested her head against her friend’s shoulder.
“Years are turning into decades and decades into centuries, I’ve heard this before Elle.” She smiled as Azriel recited her go to verse of complaining. He always thought it was cute the way Elain moaned and groaned when she was unhappy, but deep down she knew he was already putting a plan together in order to cheer her up.
“Do I really complain that often that you’ve memorized it,” she was trying to sound embarrassed but truthfully Elain loved that he paid such close attention to her emotions and movements.
“You complain about your job everyday you have to go, of course I know it,” Az said like it was that obvious and considering she knew he was stating a fact she supposed it was.
“I’ll just find something new to complain about then,” Elain shrugged.
“How about we discuss something more fun.”
“Like what?”
“What show do you want to binge next now that we’ve finished Lucifer?” This was a much better topic for discussion and Elain found herself sad she hadn’t thought of it before. She hummed in thought as they reached a corner and waited for the white walking man to appear.
“Feyre told me she talked Rhys into watching Outlander with her now that it’s on Netflix,” Elain suggested remembering how her future brother-in-law was telling her about his new competition, Jamie Fraser.
“Is that the one where they’re in Scotland and she travels back in time a few centuries?” Azriel asked a puzzled look on his face like he was trying to decipher other shows in his head.
“Yeah it’s supposed to be amazing,” Elain said but she had already tried the first episode after she left her sister’s house the other night. She fell asleep halfway through the first episode and couldn’t bring herself to try again.
“How about The Flash? Cassian said a new season was just added,” Azriel countered reading her features and knowing her heart wasn’t really in the show she thought of.
“The Last Kingdom? It’s historical and full of action which is something we both love. Plus Mor has binged it a hundred times and is really pushing me to watch it.”
“Sounds perfect.” Their conversation halted as they reached the front door to the interior design company Elain worked for.
“Guess this is me,” Elain said softly really wishing she didn’t have to go through the gates of hell again. It was only Monday too.
“Keep your head up and start the timer I set on your phone so you know when to meet me for lunch,” Elain laughed at the last part feeling her chest lift slightly. Azriel always set a timer everyday so neither of them missed their lunch dates. They weren’t actually dates but Elain referred to them as nothing else but that in her head.
“Where shall we go today?” Elain asked wanting to stall the inevitable a little longer. They still had a few minutes before they needed to walk into the office anyways.
“Rita’s, I have to meet Rhys around the corner afterwards so it’ll be easier on me,” Azriel shrugged and she was one hundred percent fine with the choice. Rita’s was a bar and grill that her whole family and all her friends were obsessed with, they went every Tuesday night for trivia.
“You know I’m always down for that,” Elain smiled before looking down at her watch and realizing she needed to leave. “I have to go so wish me luck.”
“You don’t need it,” Azriel told her before turning and heading across the street to the law firm. She watched him go with a bright smile on her face. The moment his figure disappeared through the glass doors she sighed and turned on her heel, heading into her own place of work. Elain really wished it was next spring already.

helloo, I saw your posts and I’m so sorry for asking such question like yesterday, I came back to aot fandom again since january and found ur fics in April. I dunno the reason you hid em, but I’m glad u didnt delete them because they are really cool. I dont have a tumblr acc. Get well soon, i’m praying for your recovery!! I ship rivamika since 2014 ❤️ . I just knew that inter fans are toxic than in my country... sorry for my english. Love you hashire
First, your English is fine, and I love you, too. ❤️
It's also fine that you asked. I appreciate knowing that someone noticed. I've told a few people about it and had one other person contact me to ask what happened. A reason for that may be because people think I don't want to talk about it. That is not the case. I wasn't going to make a huge post about it without prompting is all.
Anyway, I've changed my mind. I took an unintended hiatus from writing in 2020. I just didn't feel like doing it for many reasons. Sometime over that year or so of very little (if any) writing, I wondered if I was done with writing rivamika, if I should be done with writing rivamika. There's always been a point where I feel like, hey, maybe there's nothing else for me to write or share. It happened with k/anle/a back in 2011/12 (though I did write a short thing in 2016 after rereading the manga, but that was it). I wished, then, that my last posted fic had been something other (better) than disturbing the dust. I couldn't go back and change it, so it was what it was.
But then, after 138 came out, I suddenly had a burst of energy to write again. I wrote another short thing after a prompt for an rmevents weekend inspired me. It wasn't really rivamika, I know. Sure, their daughter was there and Levi appeared at the end, but it wasn't much. I wrote another little thing in April after having feels over seeing what was on the gravestone. Still not really rivamika because it was only Mikasa and their kid.
I hadn't posted for over a year at that point, so it felt a little like a comeback, if you will. I didn't expect much reaction over that fact, and I was right. Disappointed regardless, but right. No one is obligated to feel anything about me and my writing. It's just frustrating to think about how so many other authors could come back after a long break and be celebrated for returning. I'm sure this all comes across as very bitter and jealous and honestly, it kind of is. I'm fine with acknowledging that.
The thing is, I write what I want, which generally aren't things that draw a big audience. I can't write chaptered fics. It's something I've never been able to do. People want 50k words of fanfic. I can't do 50k words of fanfic. This is something that has frustrated me for so long. I have accepted that I'm unable to do it now. It took a very long time, but I have.
It's not unreasonable to want feedback when you post something online. Write for yourself, they say. I just said that I fucking do. There is absolutely nothing I've written that I wouldn't want to read. Even when I asked for prompts, I only answered the ones that appealed to me.
All that aside, the fandom feels different. I came back to shippers who felt it was absolutely one hundred percent necessary for rivamika to be canon. I felt so uncomfortable standing back and watching the meltdown (not the reaction to the chapter overall and its many, many drawbacks and many, many things to be critical of, just rm). No ship needs to be canon for it to be shipped or even exist. This seems like a recent turn of events in many fandoms, though I may be wrong. I may have just missed the people who demanded canon or nothing. Get mad me all you want about what I've said. I didn't say anything to slight anyone. It is what I've observed. My opinion. I can be critical of people's behavior as much as people can be critical of other things (like many people have said they have been over the past days, though critical is not really the word I'd choose to describe it).
I do think I'm done writing rivamika, with the exception of measured out in teaspoons (part 2 of among the teacups). I would like to write and deliver that at some point soon. Inspiration may strike for something else, but, right now, I don't have any plans to write more rivamika.
And yes, I know that I've gotten support from people over the years. That there were people who I felt I could count on to read and respond to what I posted. I appreciate all of that so much. More than I can even express. I didn't delete my fics because I didn't want to lose all of those kind words. To all those people: I love you.
I still ship it. I'll still reblog things for it (mostly art because it's been a very long time since I've wanted to read rm - with a few exceptions - and the other related posts just aren't for me). I just have no plans to create it. This can change at any time, but, for now, I don't think it will.
This got so long. Good on you if you read all of it. Anyway, that's all I have to say.

Welcome!
Hello! Welcome to the ask blog for my latest fanfic: A New Frontier! I was heavily inspired by CharmmyColour’s idea for holding an ask blog for her story, and I thought it would be pretty neat to have one of my own. If you are familar with ANL’s ask blog (which will be provided here https://askanl.tumblr.com/ ) then the premise would be the same.
You may ask any of the characters featured in the story any question you might have, but they will answer differently depending on their state in the story, You are free to ask about events that happened in previous chapters and also ask any characters that have appeared in other chapters but are not present in recent ones.
Another point, and something to differenciate myself from Charmmy’s ask blog, you may also ask ME anything that you might want to know about the fanfic. Development struggles, inspirations, why I decided to write this fic in the first place, etc.
In order to ask a character a question, just signal what character you want to ask. If you want to ask Cavendish a question, say: “To Cavendish, how does it feel to be a sheriff?” If you wish to ask ME a question, you may refer to me as author. “Hey author, what is your goal with this story?”
I really do hope I made any of this clear enough for anybody that wants to participate. I know this ask blog will probably not be as good as what Charmmy has going on as I cannot draw anything at all, and will have to rely on writing the answers myself
The link to the fic itself will be provided here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/28825230/chapters/70700631
So have fun everybody ;)

Gosh can't wait for shit to calm down so I can start writing properly again. The most I've been anle to do is a few sentences at a time of a side fanfic that was made to cool down from In Veneration. That's not even getting to the fact that I finally have another idea for a novel after putting down the one I'd been working in since high school.
Any In Veneration readers who read this: I haven't abandoned it, life's just been very busy.

Post-Korra Avatar Fanficcy Thing
As I mentioned a while back, I’ve had these half-formed ideas for an AtLA/LoK “Next Avatar” sequel pretty much since Korra ended, but without any sort of firm story for the characters that I’ve created. Since these plotbunnies are hopping around my brain again, I’m gonna try to write things out just to see if that will a.) put the plotbunnies to sleep, or b.) help me get ideas for an actual fanfic (that I don’t have time to write anyway).
Keep going if you want to see a ridiculously long explanation of one fan’s stupid ideas.
Worldbuilding/Backstory/Whatever
Much has changed in the Avaverse since Avatar Korra beat Kuvira in her attack on Republic City. The Earth Kingdom/Empire is now called the Earth Confederacy, with a Parliament and Prime Minister running a bunch of semi-autonomous states. Technology has advanced in ways that I haven’t exactly figured out yet; maybe, like, 1950s-level? Also, everybody has last names now. Makes things easier to keep track of.
So, thirty years post-Kuvira, Korra goes on some sort of trip. I’m not sure why, where (maybe the Spirit World?) or what happened, but she vanishes, and all attempts to find her fail. This naturally causes some problems, because nobody knows if she’s alive or dead, and if she is dead, well, good luck finding the new Avatar in a continent-sized country when you don’t even know what birthday to look for. So yeah, we get a smaller version of the Aang-in-an-iceberg situation where people have no idea what’s going on with the Avatar cycle.
Cut fifteen-to-eighteen years later, and meet Keno Hiiragi.
Main Characters (and the Vague Narrative That Brings Them Together)
Keno Hiiragi (name somewhat subject to change) lives in Omashu with his widowed mother and twin sister. If Aang was the “spiritual” Avatar and Korra the “physical” Avatar, he’s the “intellectual” Avatar. He’s tall, gangly, bookish and introverted. He’s always had big plans for his life and tends to get moody and upset if things don’t work out like he expected.
Like when he’s worked his whole life to get good grades, won early acceptance to Ba Sing Se University, and then finds out that NOPE, it turns out that you’re the Avatar and have to spend the next decade or two learning to bend all of the elements.
(How does he find out? I’m thinking something dramatic happens, like a flood, and he winds up accidentally Waterbending to save someone. This naturally brings the White Lotus to his door.)
Oh, yeah---Keno already knew he was an Earthbender, but unlike his predecessors, he didn’t bother to master it by the time he hit puberty. Earthbenders learn it for their Physical Education requirement in school, but like most nerds, he dropped that class as soon as he could and faked a lot of injuries so that he could read in the bleachers. Basically, he’s just constantly rebelling against this whole situation, because he doesn’t want to learn anymore bending and why is bringing world peace his responsibility and askjsadkhjdfasknasd.
Which puts him in strong contrast to Mariko Hiiragi, his twin sister. While Keno was always bringing home perfect grades, she was an Earthbending jock who probably had a poster of Toph on her bedroom wall. The siblings bicker, but were relatively peaceful being prodigies in their separate fields. In fact, Mariko was accepted for training by the world’s greatest Earthbending master just as Keno got accepted into school! Accept HA HA no now they’re going to said Earthbending master together, because Keno gets special treatment even though he can barely levitate a rock and never practices and people are talking about how he’s going to be the best Bender ever in every element and---
(The Keno-Mariko rivalry is basically a much toned down version of Zuko and Azula. And it’s also ironic, because ultimately they wish the same thing---that Mariko was the Avatar instead of Keno. Mariko kind of unfairly blames him for the situation, but this would probably be an early subplot that gets resolved fairly quickly---no doubt one of them will save the other or they’ll team up to fight something and then resolve their differences. Then Mariko becomes his tutor or something. She’s probably more of the “B-Squad” of the new Team Avatar, though; she’ll join in the big battles but doesn’t travel around with Keno on his big world-spanning adventures.)
We also have Anling Soh, Keno’s childhood friend (and probably the person he saves in the aforementioned flood or whatever). She’s a Firebender, though she may not be very adept at it, having grown up in an Earth Confederacy city without any teachers. (I’m not sure if the similarities with season 1 Katara are a plus or a minus there.) She’s a lot more extroverted and calm than Keno but also extremely loyal to him, to the point where (despite his strenuous objections) she insists on accompanying him for his Avatar Earthbender training. He thinks his life is ruined, and dang it she's going to stick with him and give him some sense of normalcy until he finally gets over his freak-out.
Anling is Keno’s love interest, by the way. In contrast to both Aang and Korra, however, I don’t want to drag this out forever. Like, in “season one” of this story, Keno realizes that he has a thing for her, that her own playful flirting with him may be more sincere than he thought it was, and after one “episode” of conflicted “do I want to risk ruining our friendship” stuff they hook up. Then they’re just low-key dating throughout the rest of the story, with relatively little drama and mostly just acting the same as they did before.
So they’re off to Zaofu to see Sukru Beifong, the world’s greatest Earthbender, who happens to be the son of Zaofu’s mayor, Bolin, and his wife, Opal. He’s a decidedly tougher teacher than Keno would have preferred; the fact that he’s used to teaching the best of the best (like Mariko) and now has to teach an amateur isn’t helping matters.
In Zaofu we meet two more members of Team Avatar III: Bolin and Opal’s grandkids (from a kid other than Sukru). Shouta Beifong is the older of the two. He's an Airbender, but he’s decidedly less the “peaceful and spiritual” type and more “Toph as a male Airbender with Bolin’s physique,” prone to boisterous attacks, pranks and loud laughter. His younger sister, Hue Beifong, is a non-bender, but also kind of a psychopath. She regularly carries around ten-foot swords or Spirit-vine-powered bazookas and no that is not even remotely legal, she made them herself. She probably plans to become chief scientist of Varrick Global Industries someday, and will no doubt wind up in prison like her idol.
Okay, so now all we’re missing is a Waterbender! Admittedly, I haven’t figured out how to fit Nasak Innugati into the narrative as well as the others. I have multiple conflicting ideas of his ancestry: Foggy Swamp? Sokka’s descendant? Somehow related to Desna or Eska? In any event, he’s the apathetic/sarcastic member of our group who nobody really likes, but who cares about the others deep down.
We also need a team pet, which is a problem because Keno hates animals and is allergic to just about anything with fur. He manages to ignore everybody’s “no, seriously, every Avatar has some sort of spirit-bonded animal” thing for a while, but eventually he finds an injured baby viper bat and winds up carrying it around with him for a while. Then someone/-thing attacks him and he instinctively throws it at them, and the viper-bat winds up biting the enemy so hard that Keno can escape. He opts to keep the thing afterwards and names it Mulda (which is Korean for “bite,” if I’m getting my online translation right).
Other Characters (Including Old Favorites!)
As previously mentioned, Bolin and Opal live in Zaofu with their son and grandkids. Opal’s probably off doing Air Nomad things a lot of the time, though.
Based on an aborted Korra plotline apparently mentioned on the DVDs, Mako wound up with Fire Lord Izumi’s daughter Susila. He moved to the Fire Nation and eventually became the palace’s chief of security. He currently works to protect his great-nephew, the sickly ten-year-old Fire Lord Thahn, who probably gets kidnapped at some point so that Mako and Team Avatar III can team up to save him.
Asami continues to run Future Industries, and remains wistful about Korra’s disappearance. Finding out about/meeting Keno no doubt is a blow to her, since it definitively confirms that Korra’s dead.
(Side note: As a running gag, people keep telling Keno how “close” Asami and Korra were, and he repeatedly doesn’t get what they’re implying.)
Ikki and her husband Haneul are in the White Lotus and are in the group that finally tracks down Keno. He’s a non-bender and skilled at Chi-blocking. (They test Keno’s Earthbending skills by having him fight him. Keno loses in about three seconds.)
Jinora is now the leader of the Air Nomads. She and Kai are married. She runs the government, while he’s Air Temple Island’s main teacher (and has a Gyatso-esque tendency to teach his students how to cause trouble). They probably have some kids but I’ve not fleshed them out too much.
Meelo runs the Air Nomad military on his sister’s behalf.
I dunno what Rohan’s doing. I’ve always headcanonned him as a non-bender, though.
Desna and Eska are probably still alive and running the Northern Water Tribe. I guess Tonraq could still be alive in the South, and it’d provide some more character-building angst when Keno shows up.
Varrick is now an important member of the Earth Parliament, running the opposition to the current Prime Minister. His company is currently being run by Zhu Li and/or their daughter Dipika.
Toph is totally still alive. I mean, this may never come up, but I headcanon that she just lives in the wild now, beating up Death whenever he tries to claim her.
Plot???
I mean, I guess “what happened to Korra” is an obvious one. Team Avatar III must go and investigate? Maybe Keno can contact her spirit, despite being cut off from the other Avatars? The new villain was behind it?
The new villain is...someone? Maybe a non-bender? Or a spirit?
AtLA-style Evil Overlord or LoK-style Well-Intentioned Extremist? Something based on modern terrorism and/or Asian New Religious Movements?
Vague ideas about exploring the Earth Confederacy, particularly the conflict between its national government and semi-autonomous states? But conflict with no clear-cut right answers = headache.
Conclusion
This thing has been in my Drafts for like a year now, so I hereby release it into the wild.

A new light | chapter two (Elriel)
Tumblr media
She wanted to bang her head against the desk until her skull cracked. For some reason her boss was increasingly agitated today which only made Elains’s suffering a hundred times worse. It wasn’t anything to do with clients as far as she was aware, no she had a feeling it was something personal bothering her boss. Usually Elain would ask and try to make it better, but she didn’t think that was possible today.
Lucky for her, it was almost lunch time and she would get a break from the muffled yelling in her boss’s office. Elain also couldn’t wait to see Az and ask about his day, hopefully it was just as bad as hers, or worse. Though he worked with one of his brothers so Elain doubted anything could taint his day.
She looked at the clock again, seeing that only a minute had gone by since she last looked. Nine minutes until she could leave the office for her lunch hour. Elain had never felt so hungry before. Something bounced off the closed office door and she was glad it was nothing breakable. No matter what Elain did to protect her hands she always managed to cut them on broken glass.
“Think she’ll cool down anytime soon?” Vivianne, one of the only co-workers Elain actually liked in this building asked. She had rolled her chair over to the desk Elain sat at everyday. Vivianne’s hair was now pulled up in a loose ponytail, making her soft features more visible. She was a beautiful woman and if Elain was interested in women her co-worker would be one of them.
“Considering she’s been like that for the past two hours I highly doubt it,” Elain said as they both stared at a closed door. The shouting seemed to be growing louder with each word now. Then the lock on the door clicked and their boss emerged.
“Take an early lunch break, all of you,” she said calmly to the office before retreating and flipping her voice to a shout once more.
“Lucky us,” Vivianne said before rolling back over to her desk and grabbing her purse. Elain reached into her bag to text Azriel that she was leaving.
Early lunch break today, you ready?
I’ll head down now.
Elain smiled as she read the text before standing up and collecting her things. Vivianne fell into step next to her, pocketing her own phone.
“Where you headed today?” she asked Elain as they waited for the elevator, having reached out and already pressed the down button.
“Az and I are headed to Rita’s,” she told her friend who was now undoing her white hair from the ponytail holder.
“Anything happening there?” Vivianne asked the same question at least twice a week. Elain had told her about her little crush on her best friend after the two had met. It was at an office Christmas party last year and Elain had brought Azriel as her plus one, Vivianne had been one of the first people to approach them. Turns out they knew each other a little from a mutual friend, and the other woman was quick to point out to them that everyone was fawning over Az.
After a few drinks and some internal brooding Elain confided in her friend that she was a tiny bit in love with her best friend. From that moment forward Vivianne had encouraged her to make a move on Az, even going so far as to tell the story behind her relationship to her husband Kallias. Vivianne had been in a similar situation to Elain but she didn’t like the part where they were separated for years before finally coming back to the other. Elain couldn’t imagine her life without her best friend, didn’t want to.
“Nothing new,” it was the same response she gave Vivianne twice a week. Elain had a feeling her friend was growing tired of the excuse but she never pushed her. No Vivi was letting her do things on her own terms, make her own story.
“Today could be your day,” the same phrase that was part of their dance. She never outright shoved Elain into the path of love with Azriel, but she silently encouraged it with those words.
“Today or tonight, but who knows?” Elain shrugged as they walk into the elevator which had to be the slowest moving one in the world. The doors closed and Vivi pressed the button to the main floor.
“Tonight?” she asked looking over to Elain with furrowed brows.
“Yeah, tonight’s our weekly binge night,” she explained with a smile on her face. Every week she looked forward to these nights where they went to each others apartments, order take out from wherever they were in the mood for and drank wine or in Az’s case beer.
“What are you guys going to watch?” Vivianne asked as she watched the numbers slowly tick down until they reached the main floor. The pair stepped out of the elevator just before a crowd of people boarded it.
“The Last Kingdom, we’ve both been in the mood for action and period dramas lately,” she explained as they pushed through the doors of the main entrance.
“You want a good action filled period drama you should try Outlander,” Vivianne said. “Kallias and I just finished the fourth season last night and have started our countdown to the fifth season in the meantime.”
“I tried it but I could barely make it through the first episode.”
“The first few aren’t too interesting but once you meet Jamie Fraser you’ll find a reason to keep watching,” Vivianne said with a wink. Elain chuckled at her friend’s antics.
“I’ll give it another try sometime then,” she promised.
“You better, if only so I can fawn over Jamie with someone that isn’t male,” Vivianne groaned and Elain found herself laughing again.
“What are you chuckling about?” Azriel said coming up behind Elain and making her jump. She was easily startled but with that deep voice of his she seemed even more likely to be scared. He pressed his hands to her waist to calm her, knowing the contact halted the chill that had been going down her spine.
“Vivianne’s love for a fictional character,” Elain answered smiling up at her best friend. He smiled down at her in return looking much happier now that they were together.
“You’ll be the same way trust me,” Vivianne said pointing her finger at Elain as if to say not to doubt her judgement just yet. “Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to drag my husband out of his office and in the direction of some food.”
“Good luck!” Elain called to her friend. Vivianne waved behind herself having already turned to walk down the street. The pair of friends chuckled as they watched her go.
“Ready?” Azriel asked when they lost sight of Vivianne.
“Starving,” Elain said as her friend took her hand and guided her in the direction of Rita’s.
___
Azriel couldn’t stop smiling, not while Elain sat across from him shoveling food into her mouth. For a woman who prided herself on being proper and ladylike, she looked like she had been possessed. He knew she could eat but he loved when she was this hungry, to the point she didn’t give a fuck about what she looked like.
Normally when they came to Rita’s Elain got a salad, but today she decided to treat herself. She had ordered the fettuccine alfredo, a dish that was hidden amongst the burgers and flatbreads Rita’s specialized in. yet Elain found this dish, she told him she liked finding the hidden meals on a menu, it meant they were underrated and delicious.
“Can you even breathe?” Azriel asked leaning forward on the table as he watched her twist another fork full of noodles into her small mouth. Elain nodded as she chewed, not leaving any room to speak words. He chuckled as he leaned sat in his chair having finished his burger and fries earlier.
He was a fast eater, something he had been forced to learn as a kid living in the foster system. If you didn’t eat quickly you didn’t eat at all. In fact the way Elain was eating the pasta dish in front of her now reminded him of those times. He used to look down on those memories but he had learned to appreciate them as they shaped him into the person he was now, and led him to Elain. The best thing that had happened to him.
“Are you going to finish your water?” she asked motioning to the full glass Az had barely touched since the waitress came by the refill it. He had lost his focus when she looked Elain with disgust, then to him like she pitied him for having lunch with a sloppy eater. It didn’t sit right in his stomach so he hadn’t touched the glass. Now he freely handed it over to his best friend who sucked down half the glass.
“You’re going to explode,” Azriel said watching her pick back up her fork and shovel more noodles onto it. “You’re so small I’m not even sure where half of that plate had ended up.” He was teasing her and he knew she had figured that out by the way she rolled her eyes.
“It’s going down to my stomach and through my intestines, didn’t you take anatomy in college?” Elain teased before taking a big bite with the last piece of chicken that had been apart of the dish. It was true he had taken anatomy, mostly so he could flirt with this girl he found attractive at the time, it didn’t go anywhere though.
“I just like testing your knowledge,” Az shrugged. Elain swallowed before looking into his hazel eyes and speaking.
“Trust me,” she said, leaning forward. “I know my body.” she smirked at him and he felt his dick twitch beneath his zipper. He crossed his legs at the ankles, shifted his upper body to where his arms crossed over his chest and sent Elain a subtle glare. She chuckled before taking one last big bite and then announcing she was done.
There was hardly anything left on the plate besides sauce and some stray noodles. She leaned back smiling at him, which he easily returned. Finding the waitress Azriel signaled for the check and waited for her to bring it over.
“You never did tell me why you took an early lunch today,” Azriel said breaking the small silence that had washed over them. Elain turned away from the window where she had been contently watching people go by to face him.
“My boss has been screaming into her phone since 10 this morning,” Elain groaned, throwing her head back in annoyance. She had been hoping to avoid this conversation but she wasn’t surprised he remembered to bring it up. Sometimes Az really was too curious for his own good.
“You don’t know why though?” Azriel questioned even though he already knew the answer. Elain said it about him but she was the same way, too curious for her own good.
“Of course not, my best guess is that it’s personal,” Elain said as she moved the straw around lazily in her glass, or Azriel’s glass technically.
“You and Vivianne both trying to play detective,” he teased sending her a smirk. She rolled her eyes at him when she looked up. Azriel chuckled shaking his head.
“It makes work either stressful because we’re all trying to please her and not make things worse,” Elain started, her gaze back on the window. “Or it makes it very boring because she tries to solve the issue herself and forgets to ask for my help, which makes things worse. Neither of those things are happening so therefore it’s personal.”
“She could still fuck up the situation,” Az pointed just as the waitress set down the two checks they requested.
“I have no doubt she will I just wish I would get a front row seat like always,” Elain said reaching to grab Azriel’s bill why he grabbed hers. They always paid for each other’s meal after the first time they had gone out together. Feyre, Elain’s younger sister, had invited her friends and family to dinner for her birthday a few years back. When the waitress brought the bills they had grabbed for the opposite ones and didn’t realize until they got the change. There was a laugh shared between the two growing friends and from that day forward they decided that’s how things would be.
“Sounds like you got a good enough seat to me,” Az said as he slipped his card into its place.
“True, but I have no idea what’s happening.”
“You poor thing.”
“Shut up, you would be the same way if you were in this situation.”
“No I wouldn’t, because my boss is my brother.” She groaned at that, hating when he was literal in her hypothetical situations.
“One of these days just go along with my scenarios.”
“Where would the fun be in that?” The waitress brought back their cards, they signed the receipt and then were on their way. “I got her number,” Elain teased holding up the back of her copy, and sure enough there was a ten digit number printed on the back. Another thing they had discovered was that the waitresses or waiters would sometimes give away their numbers, unknowingly to the wrong person.
“Don’t want it,” he never did, not that Elain was complaining. Yet she still wanted her best friend to be happy and have the family he always told her about.
“She could be ‘the one’,” she teased as they headed down the sidewalk and back to work.
“Doubt it,” Az shrugged as he put his hands in the pockets of his dress pants.
“Why?”
“I already know who ‘the one’ is.”
“You neglected to tell me.”
“That’s because you already know.” Azriel stopped right in front of the law firm. Elain hadn’t even realized they had made it back already. She didn’t care at the moment either as she stared up at her best friend in disbelief.
“I highly doubt that,” Elain said shaking her head. “Unless your childhood crush on Mor developed into something else,” she hoped it hadn’t.
“Don’t worry it’s not her.”
“Someone I know though?”
“Yes.”
“Don’t tell me you’re in love with one of my sisters.” Elain really prayed it wasn’t that option, that would crush her heart more than his.
“Of course not,” he said, giving her a look like she was crazy, something he did more often than people would believe.
“Vivianne?”
“I think Kallias would kill me.”
“Then I’m out of guesses.”
“You’re closer than you think.” Azriel turned on his heel and walked away. Elain watched him as he entered the building, disappearing in a crowd of lawyers. She turned to cross the street, her mind clouded with those final words from him. She didn’t even realize she had made it back to her desk until she heard the muffled shouting. With a groan Elain finally banged her head against the wood.
