Anton and Margaret take a turn as they tackle their only assassination for this cycle, assessing August in Young Royals Season 1, Episode 4. While trying to find more eloquent ways of expressing their hatred for the character other than "he's just the worst," Anton deep dives into August's complex psychology, and Margaret points out what they see as the funniest part of August and Felice's intimacy scene.

august is such a good example of an antagonist being so easy to sympathize with that you eventually forget what was so wrong about them
like he's a massive entitled dickhead unhealthily obsessed with legacy and using drugs to cope with it, who treats women like objects and disregards their feelings, who got his ego hurt and lashed out by spreading a sextape (ruining two people's love life/reputation/dignity/future career), and who keeps whining because he regrets his fuck-up but won't assume responsibility or at least try to redeem himself (I'm talking proper actions like helping LGBTQI+ people and stuff, not just begging wilhelm to forgive him)
but also he gets so much shit thrown in his face that at some point you can't help but feel a little bit bad for him (kudos to the actor who plays a big part in looking like a very convincing miserable wet cat)
and then he slowly grows; he doesn't really "pay" for his previous behaviour (unless you believe that losing his status and his authority in a humiliating way counts as reparation) but he does seem to stop treating women like shit. he does regret what he did to wilhelm and simon and he does defend simon during the aftermath of the rowing race. he does respect sara and tries to date her properly/cares for her...
... and then he threatens wilhelm and simon to avoid prison, ultimately not taking responsibility for the shit he pulled (which is the main thing I'm annoyed at him for, that + his behaviour with women lmao). he's stopped trying to please wilhelm so he's regained some of his trust and authority with the boys (as seen with the scene in which he teaches them chess and later with alexander). he's the backup for the crown prince and he's convinced that wilhelm is going to abdicate. he's even confident in his love life, but then he loses it when the truth comes out and sara gives up on him.
he's quite literally back to square one.

I think what young royals does really well is that they paint everyone in a realistic, but fair light.
Like yes, Wilhelm is the impulsive crown prince not ready to fill his big brother's shoes, who doesn't really get how laymen think because of all the structures he needs to represent as crown prince, but he is also just a trapped teenaged boy who loves and cares deeply, who wants to BE loved and cared for.
Yes, Simon is a beautiful person whose smiles are like the sun and voice is like an angel's and he's an individual with a strong personality who doesn't give two shits what others think, but he is also stubborn and driven by emotion, and sometimes vindication. He makes mistakes.
And August. God, August. I could write a whole meta post about that guy. He dreams of being bigger than he is, he strives for power, and yet he craves intimacy. He genuinely loves Sara, he genuinely did feel bad for what he did to Wilheim - whether it was for fear of his own fate or out of guilt - he did try to make ammends, but the need to make ammends is overriden by his want for power. He strives for power because he has just lost power, his fortune, his father. He is vindictive, and impulsive and he just wants everything. He wants to preserve the royal family's power so much he is blinded by what his actions do to others. He genuinely thinks that's the right thing to do. He wants to be the good guy that everyone loves, but he also does things that are just blatantly wrong. Like what did you expect, man? Threatening the brother of the girl you love? Really???
And Sara. I love her so much. It's such a tender way of representing someone who has had nothing to do with sex, who also wants to be more than she is. I honestly think that's why she and August hit it off so well. Because they both are wanting of something - to be better, to be more, to be included (August in the royal family, Sara in Hillerska). The only difference is that Sara has a bit (a lot) of a better moral compass than August. She sees that August wants to change, he is two steps behind the line to redemption. She just didn't think that he loved power more than anything else.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that these characters are all human, and teenagers, and they mess up BIG time, which is just what I look for in a series. Heartfelt, real and everyone is at least a little bit to blame for something.
