By far the weirdest, dumbest part of the whole "well intentioned progressives tried leading West Coast cities but failed, causing the homelessness crisis" thing is that for all of the press places like Seattle get for having wild radical progressive lefty politicians like... It's a rich city that is highly segregated and home to powerful moneyed interests ranging from business associations, massive corporations, to "regular everyday homeowners" whose homes are worth upwards of 1.7 mil who all lobby very very hard to buy political power. Hundreds become homeless every year thus removing them from the voting pool, misinformation in favor of moneyed interests is rampant in local coverage, and rents force residents to move frequently thus making it hard to become connected enough to a council district that they'd know the candidates or the primary neighborhood concerns (which inherently grants even more power to homeowners). The politics of Seattle are primarily directed towards STOPPING progressives, and you can see this happen very openly in mayors and city councils over the decades. Even when voters, for example, vote to form social housing, the powers that be simply refuse to allocate funds towards it. Very little progressive policy actually gets tried, and even when it is pushed through by great pains on part of local activists and their (usually few) allies in city council it gets undermined into oblivion by the mayor, more conservative council members, and local lobbying. You can see this happening in real time right now, even, with the council president on the warpath to repeal a recent bill requiring a livable wage for delivery drivers and outright rejecting research backed community led proposals for affordable housing that was years in the making. Similar stories can be found all the way up to the state legislature. Quite frankly we are more of a libertarian state than a leftist stronghold. The whole "road to hell paved with good intentions" narrative is ridiculous. Not least of all because even Seattle political leaders are so vehemently anti-tax that we don't even build roads in the first place, least of all enough of them to reach hell.

Hi, vet and mil spouse anon here! Do you have any resources for LGBTQ military kids? Our daughter is 12 and LGBTQ, but not "out," as only immediate family and very close friends know. We currently live in an LGBGQ-supportive state, but my husband and I are scared that when the next set of orders comes, we have no control of what state we will be in for the next 2-4 years at an already-vulnerable and confusing time for any teen. She deserves to be safe and be who she is.

Continuing here, do you know of any resources either LGBTQ military kids have, or resources for these kids who live in the more extreme red states?

First, I would recommend subscribing to Erin in the Morning. This is a Substack specifically focused on monitoring risk assessment for trans/LGBTQ kids, tracking the progress of anti-trans legislation in various states, and otherwise providing up-to-the-moment reporting on what's going on where and what you need to be aware of. With a military kid, who will have no choice but to move to wherever their parents live, it's harder, but because of that fact, you might be able to access federal resources/protections that aren't available to civilian state residents (because we live in hell). For example, Biden's Department of Health and Human Services has offered an expanded range of options for trans/LGBTQ kids impacted by discriminatory state laws, and it's worth looking into those.

Likewise, I don't know what branch of the service your husband is in, but the Air Force, for example, is offering to personally help out servicemembers who have kids affected by these laws, and to provide resources to these families/take that into consideration when assigning placements. (And like... if the goddamn United States military thinks that you're on the wrong side of LGBTQ equality, uh, wow.) So while of course you and your husband might not have control over where he ends up, it's worth seeing if any of these options exist for his branch of the service, and if he has some way of making it known that he has a child who would be negatively impacted by being forced to move to an anti-LGBTQ state. That way, they can at least take it into consideration when drafting relocation orders, etc., and your husband can have it put on the record that he expressed those concerns.

Also, what you have to do pronto is enroll in the Exceptional Family Member Program. The EFMP is used for US servicemembers to state the special medical/legal needs of their dependents, so that can be taken into consideration when making placements. The Department of Defense has also recently announced that THIS WILL APPLY to military families with LGBTQ kids, and that "officials with the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps said they, too, will consider [LGBTQ-related] relocation requests through the program." In other words, even if your husband isn't in the Air Force, he can apply through this program to have his daughter's medical needs taken into account, to up the odds that your family is moved to an LGBTQ-friendly state.

Lore Olympus ch. 257-262 critique pt. 1

This one is gonna be split into 2 parts. I'm trying not to ramble on too much but I figure it'll be better if this bad boy is just split up. After that, I may or may not do more chapter critiques. I don’t want my content to *just* be chapter critiques

Ch. 257

I honestly don't remember having a lot to say about the beginning of this chapter. It was very meh. It basically just reconfirms what we already knew about the state of the mortal realm. I did want to discuss a few "stand-out" scenes when we flip back to the meeting room.

The bitter MIL trope

When we cut to Demeter trying to verbalize what's happening in the mortal realm, something she said really pissed me off:

Let me be clear. I'm not mad about what she said. I mean, I am, but I'm more mad at the fact that Rachel made her say this and the overuse of the whole "Demeter is a petty, bitter in-law that can't handle the fact that her daughter has her own life" trope.

Literally what problems is she creating from this plague?? First of all, this is a problem Persephone started, not Demeter, so Demeter confirming that the mortal realm is dying is not "creating problems". Inadvertently, the other gods back her up on this by expressing concern about the fact that what will happen to other non-immortal beings like the nymphs and what will happen if it spreads to the other realms.

I don't know if this is a callback to the original hymn, and if it is, it's in really fucking poor taste. In the original hymn, Demeter did not cause the winter "out of spite". She did it because she was fucking pissed that not only was her daughter taken away from her, but it was done so behind her back and without her consent. Also, can we stop with the "bitter MIL" trope, especially involving Demeter? I know MILs in real life can be a nightmare. Trust me, I know. But I don't think fiercely loving your daughter and not wanting her to be traded away like she's a set of golf clubs constitutes being a bitter mother-in-law.

Apollo

Yeaaaah Apollo is right, I'll give him that. Persephone is, once again, a big part of the problem. I know the gods aren't perfect. No one is perfect. But for some reason, a lot of the plot of this story seems to center around Persephone making these big-ass messes, blaming everyone but herself, and then doing fuck-all to actually fix the situation. Also, I find it hilarious that Hades is so offended by the notion that Apollo would accuse him of trying to expand his kingdom when his entire realm was built by slave labor. When has a slave master ever complained about having more slaves prisoners with jobs? Don't answer, that question is purely rhetorical.

Eris, my beloved

Ugh, the part with Eris is just *chef's kiss*. Especially when she transforms into Artemis??? I just??

I want to redraw the scene when I have time because I feel like it could be a lot more spooky-looking than it is now.

Hera

The rest of the chapter is kinda meh. Hated Hera and Apollo's interaction. Also, I'm pretty sure Rachel spelled "wife" wrong. A "waif" is a homeless person, particularly a child. Much hate to Apollo for what he said to Hera, even though Hera also low-key sucks. And yeaaaah. That's it.

Ch. 258

The handling of Hera and Kronos

Chapter 258 picks up pretty much where we left off with Hera. I gotta say I actually really liked this chapter. I know my whole page now is pretty much constantly shitting on the entirety of LO, but I gotta give major props to Rachel for how she handled 258. Was the chapter leading up to and including the interaction between Hera and Kronos perfect? No. But IMO it was still really good.

The reason why I say this is because not long before this chapter was posted, I and a lot of other anti-LO creators noticed there was a spike in comments both under Rachel's insta and in the comic's comment section romanticizing the relationship between Hera and Kronos. It was disgusting. Never should someone ever romanticize the relationship between a victim/survivor and their abuser. In this chapter, Rachel seemingly put her foot down about this and basically said "This is not okay". Now, she never outright said that anywhere that I saw, but that's the vibes I was picking up. Standing up to your abuser is really hard to do. And I'm proud of Hera (even though she's not real lol).

The one thing I did not like about this portion of the chapter was Hera and Hestia's interaction.

Really? That's all you have to say to your sister that has been going through a hell of a time? Yeah, okay, Hestia.

The ritual

Now that I've fulfilled my once-a-month praise quota for LO, time to get back to the shitting.

Besides the ugly ass art, I introduce a new challenge. The Persephone tries not to make everything about herself challenge: impossible. I see she's picking up a few tricks from Hades in the narcissist department. I've noticed, especially recently, that H&P has a particularly nasty habit of diminishing others' feelings or certain situations to make it all about themselves. I know I mentioned this in my last critique but I feel the need to bring it up again, especially in these last bits of this chapter.

Case in point A is that Hades and Persephone get so wrapped up in each other that they don't even notice that Hecate is, for lack of better terms, wigging out.

Obviously, she turns out fine, but seriously? You didn't even pay attention to her until Morpheus pointed out the fact that something was clearly wrong.

So you guys know how I felt about the whole nightie situation with Persephone. Well, you're in luck because the rage I feel for the last part of this chapter makes that pale in comparison.

This is case in point B of Hades and Persephone making everything about themselves.

When I first saw this I was kinda like "Huh???" And then the chapter ended??? I had to wait a whole ass week to find out but my fuckery senses were tingling.

Ch. 259

Literally, who fucking cares? This isn't about you!! You aren't the victims in this. They both started all this and they need to be willing to do whatever it takes to fix it. Persephone, to her credit, at least acknowledges that in a much nicer way. But yet again, HADES MAKES IT ABOUT HIMSELF.

"...it will come at a cost to us... we have to basically choose between us and everyone else." Uh. YEAH??? Jfc, stop being a whiney piss baby, and get your shit together! Choosing between yourselves and everyone else? Is that even a question? If you both have to sacrifice yourselves to make this better, tough titties.

The pool scene

This scene is what I was talking about when I mentioned Persephone's speech. But I still can't enjoy it. Why, I hear you ask? I don't know, MAYBE BECAUSE THEY'RE HAVING SEX WHILE THE WORLD IS BURNING DOWN AROUND THEM. Yeah, sure they deserve to have their lovey-dovey moments (I guess. Undeservedly so IMO). But how about you wait to pork until you've saved the world from perilous doom???

Also maybe I'm reading into this waaaaay too much, but tell me why I feel like Persephone just had sex with Hades to talk him off a wall. To me, it almost felt equivalent to "I'm going to kms if you leave me" or some other kind of weird hostage situation where now Persephone has to make HIM feel better even though this is about HER and how SHE fucked up. Idk.

Final notes

Well, that wraps up part 1. I know I've been gone for way longer than I said I was going to be and for that I'm sorry. Overall, pretty yikes but I liked 258 the best.

But essentially, through a bit of rambling in Galileo's messages [ thanks btw ! ], these kinds of booktok reads are part of a genre I shall call: The Hetrosexual Status Quo, or PanoptoPorn [ thanks user fleshdyke you will be missed ] - Smut primarily written by CisHetero White Women who engage with their desires as the patriarchy has dictated to them.

To save everyone the incoming ramble if you don't feel like reading pedantic pontification on Porn For White Women, TLDR; These 'Spicy Booktok' Authors, stuck in the bubble of shame built for them since birth, write porn in which Misogyny is the foundation.

Ignoring the brief "Getting fucked by thanksgiving leftovers" screenshot bc that one doesn't exactly count; The way in which the foundational misogyny manifests in each book is sorta formulaic, bc you can't really Iterate or subvert Misogyny without shattering the framework of the smut you're trying to make. You have the Young Spunky Female Protagonist, likely a virgin, definitely "innocent" but adequately sassy and Independent* - the pinnacle of purity without being.... Boring. [ it's still fucking boring ].

Spunk and sass, the "I don't need no man" attitude is actually what's being broken here. This nameless protag, is just capable enough until the Daddy Dom Love Interest shows up and, through a sticky series of borderline assaulty events, ends up "Curing" Female protag of what little autonomy she had - I use that word extremely liberally here. That's really all there is to it, though, in regards to the contents of this content.

The issues begin to arise when you Blink to readjust your eyes and come to understand that these books make no effort at all to break out of the aforementioned Status Quo. The uncomfortable, stunned humor most of us probably feel when reading these brief one-liner ads is because this is Just fetishized patriarchy. These writers fundamentally don't understand BDSM or kink dynamics, they cannot conceptualize sexual desire from men as anything other than borderline abusive, predatory and controlling and because they either Haven't confronted it, don't know how to confront it or simply just don't Want to confront it - "it" being The Entire Fucking Patriarchy and how it works.

But please don't misunderstand me; I am not trying to claim that each and every one of these women are Bad for writing these books. They are, in the end, still victims under the system and I wouldn't be surprised if this was all one complex coping method [ albeit unknown to the writers, oops ]. However, I must also acknowledge that these are Grown adults and we live in the year of our lord 2024; Remaining uninformed is... Difficult, to say the least.

Instances of Misogyny don't just stop there either, from what I've seen and heard, most of these Spunky Sassy female protags are no older than 25 and behave like "Bratty teenagers". Sexy Sexism requires you to write women like they're fucking stupid and frames the "I don't need no man" attitude as frustratingly and even attractively naive for the Daddy Dom in the story. The Idealization and sexualization of youth and Purity.

This is just... Rape culture in a velvet box. Go back to the post and read each screenshot, seriously. "He knocked her out and tattooed his name on her finger" "She pretended to be dead but he did it anyway" "When he pays 1.6 mil for her vagina" "You'll need a safeword when I'm done with you." What the fuck does that sound like? A woman saying no and not being respected, a woman trying to avoid sex but failing, straight up prostitution [ which isn't bad, I'm no anti-sexwork pundit, but the context of this sucks], and flagrant misuse of safewords in pseudo-kink situations.

Of course, all of this is fictional, so what's the hullabaloo? Honestly, I don't know. I can't truly assess the morality of these books bc they too exist in a state in which all fiction does where nobody irl gets hurt, and that's all I personally care about. I think I summarized the issue in a message I sent to Galileo:

this isn't as simple as "oh it's just cumbrained self-insert erotica" it's "oh no these women have fetishized an abusive institution personified into a hollow facsimile of what they wrongly assume BDSM dynamics look like."

Ultimately I suppose my conclusion is that I think I feel sorta bad for them. Sex and Romance and Desire can be so much more intricate and intimate and tender, even in it's most brutal or whumpy/snufflike forms in media, literature or art. From where I'm standing, having such a reductive, restricted view on love and sex is tragic.

new Concorde Agreement is currently in talks to be ready for 2026 and teams received a draft of it, here is what is being considered/discussed now

the new increased cost cap limit should be $220 mil with number of exceptions not falling under it being reduced (they even discussed maternity leave not being included, but that was immediately denied, another part that now shouldn’t fall under the cost cap are team building activities like Christmas parties etc)

the historical Ferrari bonus for staying in the sport should remain, but will be capped from now on to 5 % of the price pool (no matter the total amount)

they are also discussing a „fund“ of $200 m for new teams so current teams wouldn’t be afraid of losing money (also the starting price for the new team should be SIGNIFICANTLY risen up)

Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin met with Stefano Domenicali in Imola to discuss a possible Bangkok GP (according to Autosport they want to get Red Bull backing for the 2027/2028 project)

ice’s dad (Thomas kazansky sr.): asshole army major OH-6 and UH-1 pilot who got shot down over Vietnam in 1967. son of far-eastern-european immigrants. anti-commie. wanted ice to ALSO be a chopper pilot in the army, so ice went navy instead. daredevil dipshit who died & left ice’s mom alone with two young kids & whose death encouraged ice away from breaking the rules or being unsafe (esp. in the air). not necessarily a great person or a great father but died when ice was 8 so also not a huge influence on his life (i know val kilmer has said ice’s father was a big influence… I’ve written elsewhere about why i personally shifted ice’s narrative away from daddy issues and more towards Navy authority in general issues, in light of ice’s character and rank in tgm. Im still not sure who raised maverick—it’s one of those things I don’t have a strong opinion on, so it could go either way (i posited in the airplane one-shot that he was raised by relatives, aunt & uncle, but I know it’s a popular hc here that he was a foster kid—all equally plausible to me) but I do think he grew up exceedingly bitter, hearing about how great his dad was and how there was just no way! his dad could’ve failed the Navy the way he supposedly did, because he was just such a good person… there’s a real bitterness about original maverick that TGM maverick kind of lost. His bitterness only shows during the “it’s not the plane it’s the pilot” “EXACTLY” exchange (incidentally the scene that gave me the idea that Bradley thinks mav pulled his papers bc he’s openly gay…it’s the pilot not the plane, ouch). but i still think maverick is like deeply deeply bitter about how the navy handled his fathers death, which is what the excerpt i posted on wednesday is actually about—he confesses to ice how disillusioned he has been with the navy as an institution since he found out the truth about his father’s heroism. I know i just just just said that Maverick’s patriotic conservatism is his reason for existence in the meta “why we make mil propaganda movies” sense, and i stand by that, but i think on a human character level there probably has to be a little bit of deep-seated resentment towards the Navy for smearing his father’s good name and his own good name in the process. I know youre a very anti trading mitch person but would there be a situation where you would understand (not emotionaly thats impossible) like hockey wise and be ok with it like if we could of gotten ullmark (prior to the sens) would you of wanted them to shoot for it

Yes hockeywise, not fucking ullmark though lol. Not because of my anti bruins beef, you could have said the same of, say, Shesterkin, Saros or Hellebuyck.

The actual majority of my stance against trading Mitch is hockeywise -- i'd say like 80-20 hockey/nonhockey. The reason i'm so against trading him is that there's about 0 trades you could possibly make that would actually improve the team, for several reasons.

He has one year left on his contract and we know he and his agent play hardball. Teams are unwilling to give back good hauls for likely rentals.

He has a very high cap hit. Most teams spend to the ceiling, including the Leafs -- retaining would make him more valuable as a trade chip, but would limit the value of the player(s) taken in return.

He has a reputation for not showing up in the playoffs. Is this deserved? A little bit. Is this what GMs who want to make big splashes go for? No.

Even if you found a trade partner who could ignore all of these, Mitch himself has an NMC which means if he doesn't want to go, or go there, he gets final say. End of discussion.

Even if you could get him to waive, the NMC in and of itself is a negative asset because you can't flip a player like that.

Even if you could find a trade partner who could ignore that, too, what the hell are you getting in return? How are you going to win this trade? 11 million dollars in pure cap space is less valuable to your current on-ice product than a superstar winger. The market right now is fine, but two 5.5 mil players are probably not going to be better than Mitch, especially if one of them is a bidding-war candidate like Zadorov. Same with trading -- pretty much everyone else is either a) not as good or b) not on the trade block.

I don't believe in change for the sake of change. While you have the resources to improve, you should improve. There are virtually no scenarios in which trading Mitch is an improvement.

Also, re: goaltending -- our problem is not primarily goaltending. It is the inability to counterattack. Improving goaltending would help, but going from middling goaltending to elite goaltending would be less of a help than going from zero transition game to solid transition game, and it is possible without giving up one of the few puck carriers we have.

What happened during your weekend that was weird, if you feel like sharing? At least it was good so that's great 💕 I went to a local food festival with a large group of friends which was very fun although a bit overcrowded, thankfully this one friend stayed by my side the entire evening making sure I was ok and idk that was so sweet and i feel like we bonded a lot so I'm in a great mood

oh and i had a really lovely weekend with friends and my s/o! but i had an uncomfortable racist encounter with a friend where she was telling us, verbatim, the types of racist anti-mexican sentiment her MIL says. this is like the 4th or 5th time i've had to endure her sharing this, i think she finds it to be a fun anecdote or a way to bond about family. but it is just extremely uncomfortable to hear things like "oh yeah my MIL is awful, she thinks all mexicans are ____ and that they should go ____"

like how am i supposed to react/respond to this? it is uncomfortable and even weirder that she repeats this story all the time.

So after listening to the Celebrity Megachurch episode from the podcast Sounds like a Cult, I had gotten curious on how the megachurch I grew up in made their money, which sent me down a rabbithole...

I have come to the conclusion that it literally is a cult, from the founder being a pioneer in televanglism, to him being manipulative as hell with how he pick and chose Bible verses to forward his own retaric, to him literally conning a rich lady out of 6.5 mil. and going to court, loosing and then filing for bankruptcy and then establishing what pretty much is a pyramid shaped hierarchy megachurch elsewhere.

Affairs, money dissappearing, many accusations of brainwashing and cult like behavior even after the founder died (since his doctrine lives on). Preaching of homophobia, transphobia, anti-abortion, you name it. A P. allegedly creating a cult and sexually assaulting a bunch of girls in an overseas branch of the church....

Keep in mind I have met/heard of all of the people involved in all of this shit + onlookers from the sidelines. My family still actively goes to one of the affiliated churches. My fucking dad has talked good about some of these insane people. Both of the head pastors (the founder and current head) I'm pretty sure have held me as a baby/kid 💀, (I'm pretty sure we also have pictures). Ffs I even grew up and was best friends with the currents heads grandkid.

I just can't view things the way I have before learning all of this information, reading first hand accounts.

I am so fucking glad I was able to leave, but now I don't know what to do with the information that I was literally born into a cult 💀 I genuinely need to start therapy again, there is so much to process, RIP.

Okay, so yesterday. (This is gonna be lonnng.)

I woke up earlier than usual and got the animals done, but Eclipse's udder looked really big and her tail ligaments felt like squish. (Mind you, I'm not great at feeling them.)

So even though it was 5 days early, it looked like she was going to go within 24 hours.

Vampire and I hustled and spent all day building the kidding stall (I'll get pics later), cleaning and putting clean hay on that section, and putting in a heat lamp, hay feeder, and waterer.

Meanwhile, Oldest was ALSO showing multiple signs of imminent labor all day, up in PA. And she really wants me there. (And again, she ALSO was early, not due for another month!)

Vampire and I worked until after dark, then went to clean the church. I had a bunch of milk that expired the next day, so I was making two batches of pudding, plus a double batch of the family favorite ham and potato casserole (for the fam), and ham, sunchoke, and broccoli casserole (for me, the nightshade-intolerant,) all at the same time. (New invention, it's a keeper.)

Oldest went to the hospital because her contractions were getting regular. She was 3-4 cm dilated and having regular contractions. They gave her multiple doses of meds, but she progressed to 5 cm and contractions weren't stopping.

She was really upset and really wanted me there. Her partner was not being very supportive. I hated to leave the goat, but video chat is a thing. I figured I could walk the guys through it if she needed help.

I can't drive in the dark, but I was about to try and just drive really slow. Vampire had skipped an entire night's sleep to build all the goat stuff. (He usually sleeps from early morning to late afternoon.) He wasn't any shape to drive, but he did call his mom, who was just about to go to bed (it was about 12:30 am at this point), and she agreed to drive me to PA. She doesn't mind driving in the dark.

I have distinctively different views than my MIL on many things, but I really appreciate her in times like this. We get along pretty well, though I have to censor myself a lot. (Especially now that the kids aren't little, so my language includes a decent amount of cursing 😂)

We left about 1:30am. Ish. It was very foggy. A few minutes after we left, Oldest said the contractions were slowing down a bit, but still coming. We kept driving, because 5 cm. But they kept slowing and finally stopped. We pulled over about 45 minutes after we left, and I was texting Oldest like mad, trying to figure out what to do. She finally told us to turn back and wait until morning. So we turned around and headed back. Fun little trip in the wee hours of the morning!

I was keyed up, but finally went to bed about 4:30 am. Woke up at 7:30. Goat not in labor.

Oldest was being sent home with a ten-day supply of anti-labor meds. After that, Grandkid will have cooked enough.

Although Grandkid is not due until right after April Fools Day, but he and goat were apparently both tricking me early! 😂

(I can't believe I stayed up and worked all day with no nap, and then went to bed so late. I did have the help of a good bit of caffeine. Possibly a bipolar thing. I was pretty keyed up the second half of the day.)
