About your Nora post. Iirc she was about to tell Barry in the hospital but then they got interrupted by cicada. And then she was going to tell them again in the cortex but then Cecille read her mind “you want to tell us something don’t you” and because of that, Sherloque told everyone despite her pleas for him to stop.
He later apologized I’m 5x19 but damn. I didn’t like how he did that either.
post for context
Yep! Nora very clearly did try to tell them, though she was unable to in the hospital because of Cicada, and Sherloque interrupted her in 5x18. It’s very irritating, especially since he could’ve just told Barry and Iris that in private beforehand, or just…let Nora confess herself.
Sure, he apologized, but honestly, it’s on par with how annoying he is throughout s5—he’s constantly butting into everyone’s business unprompted. He’s also a completely unnecessary addition to the Team in general—they already have a PI (Ralph), a journalist (Iris), and a CSI (Barry), all of whom are perfectly capable of doing the investigation he does…and his subplots just distract from the story with no real point (filler is important to flesh out characters and relationships, but…for a character like Sherloque, who’s unnecessary to begin with? It’s totally pointless)
It would’ve been so much more intriguing, too, if the conflict of investigating Nora was Ralph vs Iris, or perhaps even Iris uncovering info herself and struggling internally with it, instead of introducing a new character just to be “zany” or whatever. Ralph and Iris, also, wouldn’t have interrupted Nora like Sherloque did ✋

GAY ICONS: ROD MCKUEN
When I first began this tumblr, I wanted to profile gay (LGBT) people who have had an influence on gay rights or impacted our culture. Often a person’s sexual identify is obscured by time and we’re left with a straight backstory. If possible I want to shed light on their gay past.
One of the people I’ve had on my to-do list since the beginning is poet and singer-songwriter Rod McKuen. He was one of the best-selling poets in the United States during the late 1960s and sold over 100 million recordings worldwide. Today he is largely forgotten.
McKuen described a difficult childhood, abused by his stepfather. In his teens he ran away from home, drifting from job to job, eventually arriving in San Francisco. There he read his poetry in clubs that also featured Beat poets Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. By the late 1950s he was performing at the famed “Purple Onion”. Decca Records signed McKuen after he began incorporated his original songs into his act.
During 1967’s Summer of Love, McKuen gained a large youth following after he published his books of poetry. He won a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Recording in 1968. The next year his song "Jean", written for “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” was nominated for an Academy Award. In all McKuen work was translated into 11 languages and sold over 60 million copies worldwide.
But McKuen was not universal loved.
Newsweek dubbed him "The King of Kitsch”
Mademoiselle magazine called him a "Marshmallow Poet."
Literary critic Nora Ephron wrote, "For the most part, McKuen's poems are superficial and platitudinous and frequently silly."
McKuen never identified as gay, straight, or bisexual, but once said:
"I can't imagine choosing one sex over the other, that's just too limiting. I can't even honestly say I have a preference."
In 1977 he actively campaigned against Anita Bryant’s anti-gay campaign - even writing a song called "Don't Drink the Orange Juice", (referring Bryant as commercial spokesperson for the Florida Citrus Commission). And he later gave benefit performances supporting LGBT rights organizations and to fund AIDS research.
Perhaps his gayest act was the release of his 1977 album “Slide... Easy In” that had a photo of a man's arm gripping a handful of Crisco – (then used by as sexual lubricant, in particular for fisting).
Tumblr media
The difficulty in researching Rod McKuen is that despite of his fame (or because of it) he regularly embellished (lied about?) his past.
McKuen claimed to have a son who was raised in France by the boy’s mother. But his own biographer Barry Alfonso said:
“There is no information that confirms that Rod McKuen ever had children.”
(This reminds me of actor Raymond Burr who also claimed to have a son without any evidence).
Another example, while defending his writing to a Chicago Tribune reporter (1975), he said:
“… if I wasn’t a damn good poet, why would I be in the Oxford Book of Verse?”
That claim was researched and there was NO Oxford Book of Verse (nor an Oxford books of English Verse or American Verse).
Regarding Edward Habib, his “partner” of 50+ years, the two lived together and McKuen referred to him as a brother. In response to a gay fan letter, McKuen implied he and Habib were biological brothers, and suggested to have had sex together “… wouldn’t that be incest?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
McKuen died of respiratory arrest in Beverly Hills, on January 29, 2015. Edward Habib died in May 12, 2018.

Christmas with the Kranks (2004)
Tumblr media
Bad movies come in many varieties but usually, they either waste your time or leave you feeling angry. If you’re lucky it might be one of those “So bad it’s good” titles but they’re few and far between. Christmas with the Kranks is another kind of bad entirely, a once-in-a-lifetime catastrophic miscalculation you (almost) have to see to believe.
When their daughter leaves for a year-long assignment with the Peace Corps, Luther and Nora Krank (Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis) lament the upcoming Christmas Holiday. That’s when Luther gets an idea. Instead of spending the money, time and effort going through the motions this season, he and his wife will go on a Caribbean cruise instead. When their co-workers and neighbors learn the Kranks are skipping Christmas, they desperately try to change their minds.
This scenario is only a few music cues away from being a horror film. While Luther and Nora act like aliens once they decide to forego the Christmas celebration - Luther goes so far as to write a memo and personally distribute it to everyone in his office - their neighbors are disturbingly obsessed with the holiday. Threatening phone calls, people observing them through their windows, dirty looks everywhere they turn… it’s like the Kranks walked into Midsommar or a holiday-themed version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Everyone is so creepy and obsessive about decorations up on the roof and other trivial things. The "Conform... or else!" message makes you wonder if the Communist Party didn’t secretly fund the picture.
What makes Christmas with the Kranks fascinating isn’t merely the tone-deaf story, it’s all the little details. At one point, Nora is uncertain about the holiday cruise thing. Her problem is that Luther doesn’t want to make the usual charital contributions. He asks her “Are you really going to let $600 stand in the way of our vacation?” You want her to turn around and ask him the same thing. Hey man, you’re saving $3,000 by going on this cruise rather than spending money on decorations, a tree, gifts, etc. Just consider that extra bit of money part of the investment. Then, after they make a big deal about the charity… several people - including the police with their calendars - approach the Kranks and are turned away. It doesn’t make sense but if they didn’t, we wouldn’t have the Kranks’ big dilemma in the third act: who can the Kranks ask for help when they’ve made enemies out of everyone in the neighborhood and all two police officers that make up the city's law enforcement?!
That was only one anomaly and it gave me enough material for an entire paragraph. Other memorable jaw-droppers are a scene in a tanning salon in which Nora is embarrassed when she walks out in a bikini and her priest stares at her cleavage, an extended gag about a Frosty the Snowman decoration that radiates evil, Luther getting botox injections that makes him unable to eat, and dozens of logical errors. It’s all tied together with horrible slapstick and an abundance of anti-cheer. You’ll hate everyone in this story at one point or another and the movie knows it but can’t tell its story without the Kranks being the villains in one scene… and the victims in the next.
The bow on top of the present is an ending so clumsy and artificial that it feels like it was taken from a completely different movie. You’re scratching your head, wondering if your eyes deceived you and then it hits you with another puzzler right before the end credits. There’s no way a 20-car pileup this fatal happens on purpose. Everyone involved thought they were achieving greatness but they couldn’t have been further from the truth. This makes Christmas with the Kranks a dreadful experience to watch but certainly never boring. It’s the kind of movie you could spend hours dissecting and discussing. I can’t think of any reason why you’d want to sit down with other human beings to watch it but if you do, at least it’ll get some conversations started. (December 4, 2020)

What happened to Miss May? A New Leaf (1971), the brilliant debuts of the improv star (1/4)
Tumblr media
Elaine May and Walter Matthau in a scene from A New Leaf
Between 1971 and 1987, Elaine May directed four films. Her directing career began with the success of A New Leaf and ended with the poorly received and commercially unsuccessful Ishtar. It was marked by great creative inputs and troubled relationships with the studios. Following this period, Elaine May’s work was mostly forgotten and difficult to access. This series of articles aims to celebrate the work of an essential comedic genius and reclaim her influential style in Hollywood history.
“Miss May does not exist.”
Elaine May is an enigmatic figure who has cultivated mystery and rarely granted interviews, cautioning journalists that her statements might not be entirely truthful. The quote above was taken from Elaine May’s self-presentation on the cover of the comedy album Improvisations on Music (1958) she made with her partner Mike Nichols. They both gained popularity thanks to their elegant, witty improvisational sketches on television and Broadway. When the ‘Nichols and May’ duo parted ways in the early sixties, they both transitioned to Hollywood careers: Nichols’s first film was Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), while May went on to make A New Leaf (1971).
Tumblr media
Elaine May and Mike Nichols in the stage production An Evening with Mike Nichols and Elaine May (1960).
Elaine May wrote, directed, and starred in her debut film, infusing dark humor into an anti-romantic comedy. In A New Leaf, she portrays the adventures of a wealthy playboy (Walter Matthau) whose sole talent lies in living a vain life of luxury, caring only about his material possessions until he suddenly loses his fortune. He devises a plan to marry a rich yet clumsy and kind-hearted botanist (Elaine May) to eventually kill her. A New Leaf starts with an unforgettable opening scene and channels  the screwball tradition and triumphant love trope throughout the film. Through this work, Elaine May establishes socially awkward characters as a recurrent theme in her filmography.
Tumblr media
A glorious poster with the longest tag line ever
However, making the film was far from straightforward. May had no experience in film direction and many people from the production tried to take the film away from her. Consequently, the studio justified that she was paid only $50,000 as the director, writer, and co-star of the movie while the two producers each gained the same amount, and Walter Matthau received a substantial $350,000 paycheck.
Elaine May’s first series of clashes with movie studios –a recurrent theme throughout her career – started during the ten-month editing process of A New Leaf when May presented Paramount Pictures with a three-hour-long version of the film, which the studio did not consider to be an adequate length for a comedy. Paramount Pictures had specified in her contract that they had the right to cut the film as they liked and proceeded to hire a new editor who reduced May’s cut in half. May sued the studio, asserting that they had created a different film under her name. This legal battle led to a legendary encounter with a judge who, despite of ruling in favor of the studio, praised May for making such a hilarious film. The version known to the public today is the studio-approved one, with May’s darker director’s cut unable to be seen.

Despite the troubled production of A New Leaf, May’s film paved the way for 1980s and 1990s comedy and inspired Nora Ephron and Woody Allen’s subsequent work. A New Leaf was inducted into the Library of Congress’s Film Registry in 2019, celebrating May as a trailblazer for comedy and female directors.

hey can you tell me about E136 Flash family?
Okay, I’m excluding the Chambers family and periphery speedsters (Bolt, Avery Ho, Danica Williams, Tanaka Rei, the Heroic Savitar and his villainous doppelganger) and focusing on the Garrick-Allen-West family, which is still an extensive story with just how enmeshed they are with the Speed Force.
But before that, I’m going to explain the reason why Keystone/Central City is so prone to speed force infused lightning bolts. It all stems from a Missouri Native American man who’s E136’s version of Max Mercury. (Missouri instead of Blackfoot because it’s more local, and I’d like to get more in depth with him, but I’d need to do research because I want to make this respectful)
(BTW, if anyone has resources on the Missouri People, I’d be very grateful)
He accidentally tapped into the Speed Force via a magic spell and earnest prayer in order to prevent a massacre of Natives by the U.S, Military and became unbound in time, disturbing the Speed Force and kicking it up into a storm stretching throughout time and localized to the Central-Keystone area. Max Mercury himself would occasionally pop up through the Flash’s history, serving as a mentor to younger speedsters, especially Bart Allen.
Cut to the late 1930’s when Jay Garrick is locked in a laboratory with heavy water in a convoluted assassination attempt by fellow student Edward Clariss to win the affections of Jay’s girlfriend, Joan Williams. In a stroke of questionable luck he and the heavy water are hit by the lightning bolt, activating his meta gene and tapping him into the speed force, becoming the first Flash.
A college footballer, he was a fairly straightforward speedster, running in straight lines and making good if unintentional use of his altered sense of physics to hit people with football tackles. He served on the All Star Squadron and served on the JSA for its entire existence, during which he and Joan would have Judy, who would become Thunderheart (Rejected names: Bang, Boom).
Unfortunately, at some point, Judy disappeared into the Speed Force, and Jay hung up the hat soon after.
Cut to 1988, when Barry Allen came home to his parents murder suicide. He’s taken in by Darryl Frye (Based off of the Earth 2 jazz musician version of the CW Flash’s Joe West), and grew into a forensic scientist, best friends with Meena Dhawan, husband to Iris West, and guardian to Iris’ nephew, Wally West (1). He was invited for a private viewing to Central City’s new particle accelerator, sharing the front seat with the Rival, a robot built to fight Jay Garrick.
Cue the Accelerator going sideways, and Barry Allen being supposedly vaporized by a bolt of lightning, the Rival bot being vaporized, and Wally being sent into a temporary coma. After spending a virtual eternity trapped within the Speed Force, he’s spat out several months after his death…in the Rival bot’s body.
Thus begins the F.L.A.S.H. (Fastest Living Artificial Super Hero). He would become a founding member of the Justice League, take on Wally as Kid Flash, finally reveal his identity and get back with Iris, and both fight and reconnect with his long lost twin Malcolm Allen (Adopted by Crispus Allen’s family). He would struggle with his sense of self for years, trying not to lose his consciousness to the Speed Force, a fight he would ultimately lose trying to stop the Anti-Monitor, though not before having twins (Don and Nora) with Iris via IVF with Malcolm’s help, who would grow up as civilians.
Also amongst the Allens are Thad and Bart Allen, sons of Don Allen heralding from a dark future where the heroes of Earth fight a losing war against regime of supervillains backed by the Reach and propped up by Apokalyptan tech, given their powers via a retrofitted cosmic treadmill. With the aversion of this dark future and the loss of several items used to kickstart their powers, their future now exists in a state of flux.
The version of the twins stranded in the present would meet a tragic parting as Thad would give his life to the Black Racer, while Bart would fall under the tutelage of Max Mercury, eventually becoming successor to the Mercury name.
Then there are the Wests, Iris, Rudy, and the estranged Daniel. Both Rudy and Daniel would separately name their sons Wallace in reference to their grandfather. Wally West the first would gain his powers following the above mentioned lightning strike and pretty much force himself under the wing of the robotic speedster who appeared several months later.
You could imagine his surprise upon finding out that the robot’s actually his uncle.
He would become Kid Flash, meet Artemis Crock and Dick Grayson, join the Teen Titans, nearly get killed by his powers, semi-retire and go to college, become friends with Chester Runk, fall in love with Linda Park, come out of retirement to fend off the Apokalyptan Invasion, share the mantle of Flash with Barry for several years, become an avatar of the Speed Force, have a falling out with his friend Hunter Zolomon, have kids with Linda Park, and become the Post-Crisis Flash before sharing/passing off the mantle to Jess Chambers.
Linda herself would gain photokinetic powers and briefly be press ganged into the Rogues as Prism, but would mostly stay out of the superhero game.
Wallace “Ace” West would mostly be raised by his mother Rina while his father Daniel went in and out of prison. Rina would be diagnosed with MacGregor's Syndrome, and lacking any relatives, would move to Central City to be closer to Iris and the West-Allens. Daniel would follow, and both would nearly be killed by a nearly cataclysmic fight between the Flash fam and the Legion of ZOOM (The various Reverse Flashes). Ace would be taken under the older Wally’s wing as the new Kid Flash, eventually becoming Surge, while Daniel would meet an unfortunate end as the Reverse Flash of Owlman's New Crime Syndicate.
Wally’s twins, Iris and Jai would both follow in their father’s footsteps. Iris, the more traditional speedster of the two, would become Impulse, the Kid Flash to Jess Chambers’ Flash, before eschewing the Flash name and becoming Impulse once more. Jai, meanwhile, wouldn’t end up with superspeed, but increased control of the secondary altered physics field and a degree of temporal manipulation, becoming a heroic version of the Turtle, equipt with a Captain America-style shield.
I’m not sure about Wade, but I had the idea his powers would be a weird mixture of his parents, where he could access and intangible ‘Lightspeed’ mode.

Das Speedster-Pheromone-Verse
Tumblr media
Mein Speedster-Pheromone- bzw.
 https://www.fanfiktion.de/s/5bd03d9000000b7b2b69d839/1/Alle-lieben-Barry-Allen
 https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13101538/1/Alle-lieben-Barry-Allen
Tumblr media

Endgame-Pairings in diesem Verse waren Westhallen (Iris/Eddie/Barry), Lauriver (Laurel/Oliver), Snowstorm (Caitlin/Ronnie), Cynco (Cisco/Gypsy), CaptainCanary (Leonard/Sara), Atomwave (Ray/Mick) und natürlich Dyla (Dig/Lyla).

22, 23, 26, and 27 for the ask game! :)
22. Popular character you hate?
Kylo Ren. His redemption was poorly done, and…yes, he should’ve lived, but not for some awful romance plotline. He should’ve lived so that he could do the hard work of atoning.
Or they should’ve gone full-fledged villain with him. Because…they were going for Vader parallels, but they did NOT stick the landing at all.
23. Unpopular character you love?
Nora West-Allen! I understand the criticisms about her, which is why I only write her around the age of 18 (since imo that’s what she should’ve been), and there are some inconsistencies in what she knows about Thawne, but aside from that…idk I found her compelling and I love the Westallen family 🥰
(I also think she’s great in s7, even if I hated the Godspeed arc and that season as a whole)
26. Most shippable character?
Probably Iris honestly, she’s shippable with a bunch of characters 😂 notably Barry, Eddie, Kendra, and Caitlin!
Cisco’s also pretty shippable: Barry, Cynthia, Kendra, Kamilla (even Lisa, if you’re so inclined)
27. Least shippable character?
There’s a few that could fall into this category (Azula, Ozai, etc), but definitely Thawne. The thing he had with Meena in s8 was sweet, but they had to turn him very OOC to make it work, and we only knew this version of Thawne for an episode or two, so it wasn’t even enough time to get attached to them.
salty ask game!

You just know some shit is going down if Barry still stays with Iris after she admitted flat out she didn't care that Reverse Flash killed his mother or that Nora lied to everyone for working with him. How come Barry never called Iris out on her bullshit? The only real stuff that happened between them was that pipeline fight in 5x19, their story as a couple should have ended there. Iris taking the side of RF over her husband/brother? And he still stays with her? What is going on in the writer's room?

WA’s Aftermath in 5x18
There are 3 things that will happen to them when the show comes back.
1. The heated argument leading to their divorce. The only realistic scenario after Nora's betrayal scene. Story-wise it makes perfect sense because the show has been building WA to go nowhere. It’s the only ship I know that is built on sand. They wrote Viris to be an utter virus, controlling and manipulating bitch and made Barry her bitch along the way. Barry's reaction to Nora's exposing was finally a moment where Viris had no control over. Barry reacted like any normal person let alone father would to finding out their own flesh and blood had been lying to their face this entire time. Divorce seems to be headed for WA anyway and I find this choice the most likely, if they are smart with their writing, it's inevitable. 2. The heated argument leading to Barry's submission to Nora and Viris' toxic behavior. This one can happen out of fear. The writers are deathly afraid to pull the plug on WA breaking up over fake racist accusations. Being a Snowbarry shipper, I can tell you that I sympathize with them, but only to an extent. The show has lost a lot of money in marketing, advertising and overall budget due to SJW identity politics pandering and they have to be smart with their business decisions to benefit the future of the show. Because right now, WA still being together, Viris still attached to Barry, controlling his every action, thought and friendship circle, doesn't look good to the regular viewers who just want to want a decent superhero show. You can see it in Grant's eyes whenever he’s near Danielle and Carlos, he wants the show to return to its roots. Snowbarrisco, Barry's CSI, science jargon, good action sequences and solid story telling. WA and now their kid have taken over too much of the show for too long. If they choose this, it’s suicide made over fear of a bullying group of loud race baiting losers. 3. Nothing happens. The "heated exchange" gets abruptly interrupted. I fear this one might happen for a couple of reasons and it's the same reason why I attack Todd Helbing and the writers constantly. When is anything going to be resolved on the show? When are things going to be explained in the story in real time? When are the writers going to stop making excuses due to time restraints, useless pep talk drama and C plots hogging over what we really want to see? Todd is a shitty show runner who doesn’t plan his ideas. The problem was he was thrown into the head chair due to what happened with AJK, which ironically, when he was the main show runner, it was more tolerable. With a new show runner for next season, I hope this doesn't happen and they will explain key elements to their story arcs without confusing their audience. The WA mishap should have been resolved a long time ago. Perhaps this option won't happen and #1 is what takes place. One can only hope the writers and show runner care enough to give us what we want with the scenes and characters.
With Danielle Panabaker directing and editing the episode, I have high hopes but we should all be prepared for any scenario that may come about.
Support the episode when it airs on April 16th 8pm ET.

“Barry is a selfish person for trying to save his mom from being murdered in flashpoint”
Okay then, if YOUR mother was killed in front of you at a young age and YOUR father was wrongly convicted for the crime, YOU would try everything in your power to change that from happening correct?
So how is Barry “selfish” for that? He saves the world and puts everyone as priority over himself
But sUrE but ironically the person who said that ALSO said that Wally is justified in trying to bring his family back, because unlike Barry, he didn’t deserve that…
Barry did not deserve that either he was just a kid- Some Wally fans these days blow my mind

I have had it up to here with Nora's treatment of Iris. Whatever way she's screwed up in the future is no excuse for this passive aggressive bullshit
