ouu i hate to even be making this post just because overall, i really enjoyed trc !! i think the characters are interesting !! but ugh the casual sexism/racism are driving me up a wall 😭😭 it's just so.. uncomfortable to read. i really like (and still do, minus what i'm about to say) adam's character, but some of the stuff he said in his fight with blue? about raging feminism? and just the way he describes her and having to deliberately try not to stare at her tits? actually insane, maggie why would you write that 😭 and yeahh i know he's a teenage boy and teenage boys are wild and blah blah, but was that really a necessary detail? gansey isn't innocent of this either btw, which is frustrating to see especially when he's supposed to be the endgame love interest. and then the random racist moments that like? the majority of characters make. this is why noah czerny is my favorite. cant do anything wrong if you're dead and faded away i guess

Maggie stiefvater can keep mentioning things like Instagram and Tiktok but I live in denial and continue to believe that there is NO WAY these books take place later than 2005

Books I’d realistically recommend to p1harmony members if they asked me to
These might not be the perfect matches but I’m only pulling from the books I’ve read
Keeho: Beautiful world where are you - Sally Rooney
Even though I didn’t personally like this book I think me and Keeho would have different tastes. He doesn’t read but I think Sally Rooney is a good author for people who are starting to read in adulthood. It’s a realistic book and it’s easy to read which I think Keeho would like and he’d feel smart after reading it. Also it’s about human relations which i think he’d be interested in
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honorable mention: Anne of green gables (bro, pls)
Theo: Bunny - Mona Awad
Realistically I don’t know if he likes reading but I feel like he’d be cool with reading a book that’s a bit more ambitious. This book is very trippy but has a gripping plot. I think he’d like the topics covered in the book such as toxic friendships and feeling alienated. It’s a very female oriented book but I think he’d like reading from this perspective
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jiung: The Stranger - Albert Camus
Im pretty sure he also said he doesn’t read so I’d recommend him a book that’s short but has a lot to say. He’s a very smart guy and The Stranger is a philosophical novel. It’s a book about the searching for meaning but also about isolation, death and the absurd of life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Intak: Metro 2033 - Dmitry Glukhovsky
I think Intak would like a book with a lot of action and adventure. The Metro series is a dystopian story about people living in the Moscow metro after a nuclear war. The series has a very clear anti war message but it’s also very fun. It has aliens, mutated creatures and a lot of cool world building.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jongseob: Solaris - Stanisław Lem
This is a modern classic philosophical science fiction novel. It can be challenging for some people but the overall conclusion of the book is jaw dropping. The main themes of the book are the inadequacy of the human mind and the idea that humans aren’t the centre of the universe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please bare in mind that there are some problematic things in todays standards but the book was written in the 60s and most of it holds to this day
Soul: The Raven Boys - Maggie Stiefvater
It’s a cool story full of suspense and mystery. It’s a modern fantasy with vivid and relatable characters. The main character is a independent, quirky person Soul might find relatable. It’s super fun and easy to read and the story is very unusual and unexpected.

Reading the famous Maggie Stiefvater anti-piracy thing for the first time; and like, first off, the text assumes writing a book series is a good normal thing, when I find book series somewhat repellent because I find the commitment daunting. Second the the book wasn't pirated, it was leaked; that's completely different! All her books had been pirated, I promise you that, and they weren't cutting on the sells, only the book that was leaked was declining on sales, that's clearly because it was leaked, not because it was pirated!
And then the next book had a smaller printing, book 4 in a series, you have to be 3 books in to read the 4th. And it was the editorial, the editorial that only cares about money, not books; the editorial almost cancelled the series.
And it's what I was talking about yesterday; she's not mad at her publisher who's only using her as a tool to make money, she gets mad at her fans; she gets mad at the people with the less power.

some vaguely incoherent yelling about goblin emperor + politics + genre beyond the read more (just to be clear by some i mean a whole wall of text)
(fyi goblin emperor is one of my favorite books i just also like engaging with things i like in critical ways)
i started my day by verifying at approx 4 am that maggie stiefvater named herself after margaret thatcher (true btw) so i've been thinking about neoliberalism and --
i've always really disliked celehar's letter at the end of goblin emperor because for a guy that in theory is an impartial investigator it reads to me as incredibly dismissive and judgmental of the Curneisei philosophy: like yeah i mean i don't disagree there's stuff there that's questionable but also there's some stuff that isn't re: wanting more power for the working class -- celehar even acknowledges this by saying that he can understand and sympathize with the desire to improve their lives. (they are, presumably, underpaid, overworked, and experiencing dangerous labor conditions.) (i disliked this letter + celehar by association so much that i put off reading witness for the dead for ages lol but i was very brave and read it this week and i enjoyed it. tea culture!)
(in contrast i actually like maia's interaction with shulivar -- i think that it makes sense that maia would have a somewhat naive understanding of the impact of the existence of his government and would be shocked and discomfited by the truth of shulivar's words -- so it feels to me less like a good/bad moral judgement is being passed (as in celehar's letter) and more like a broadening of maia's worldview. i also like that shulivar presents his actions as just a beginning, not an end-all to change)
similarly the plot against elhokar in words of radiance (stormlight archive) has also always really bothered me -- i know there's a lot of other stuff going on there with like moash's personal vengeance and the Diagram and whatever but -- if you have like, a societal problem (class/racial inequality) just putting a different king in power who will still 100% uphold that system is ??? not ??? going to solve anything ???? you'll just have another shitty inbred ruler a couple years or decades down the line.
i guess my point here is that it's kind of wild to me that in both of these worlds this kind of "gentle neoliberalism" is upheld by even the most extremist radicals (change for the better as a result of only a change in leadership; social change as a result of individuals in power being "good"; rebellion seeking change only through that leadership turnover and not anything structural or systemic -- and even that kind of rebellion being denounced as unethical because of its impact on individuals). it's a viewpoint that exists in actual real life politics ("vote and all our problems will be solved!") but i think it's also kind of a genre problem? like i'm very much anti-monarchy irl but when it's zuko fire lord post-canon fanfic suddenly i'm like yeah okay king! i guess part of it is being invested in the individuals in power as people with their own narratives more than the (fictional) society and its injustices (a very different perspective than with irl politics), but i do think there's also a genre expectation of a fantasy setting having some kind of hereditary leadership. i am much more willing to accept a monarchy in a book with magic in it than i am in real life. (maybe that's just a me problem.)
i feel like most of the fantasy i read is either like this (monarchy is ok when we like the characters involved in it) or has the government as No Nuance Big Bad. i'd love to read more fiction that does both: monarchy is a bad idea but also we like the people who are doing it so it's complicated. and fiction that has rebellion for actual societal change beyond just killing one king to get another (please !) -- i mean don't get me wrong i still want to read things that are hopeful and are optimistic about social change, just maybe that's like, the power fantasy of a bunch of teens tearing down a government entirely rather than just those teens putting a different person (a "good guy") on the exact same throne. (in fairness to zuko btw the atla extended lore does tackle some of this and i have read some pretty solid fanfic that does even more)
within the world of goblin emperor, i feel like there are moments that get close to the "it doesn't matter whether you're 'good' because the system itself is broken" -- things like varenechibel also wanting to build the bridge across the istandaärtha or maia being able to delay vedero's marriage but not change that he still controls the fate of the drazhadeise women -- but it could go further. i would really love to see maia having to confront the implications of being an emperor beyond what we've seen thus far: things like learning the history of the conquered peoples within the empire and having to come to terms with whatever genocide and cultural erasure shaped the ethuveraz. (i haven't read grief of stones yet so i can't speak for that but i don't think we've seen that aspect of empire in canon. also i'm lying i don't actually want to see that bc i really don't want a direct sequel to TGE but like maybe indirectly through the amalo books or maybe just in fanfic) also i think a like, shulivar pov in the style of "fantasy novel where the good guys take down bad government" would be incredible.
any way these are my takeaways:
i will read more books
(maybe not raven boys though)
happy new year! :-)
p.s. also i dont really know what i'm talking about i'm just a guy on the internet who is trying to connect dots i'm not a political scientist or anything please don't yell at me (do dm me to talk about goblin emp tho my only friend who's read it is still asleep. goddamn time zones) p.p.s. i'm using neoliberal here to refer to a kind of attitude of "a particular kind of status quo is good actually (even though at least nominally we want social change)" which is how i typically see it being used in Internet Discourse. i think there's prob more poli sci definitions out there that are more specific/accurate
p.p.p.s. if you're interested in this + like reading things that are actually coherent try this (altho i hate the title. i know here it's probably for clicks so whatever but infantilizing non-infant characters is a big pet peeve of mine. the phrase "cinnamon roll" my beloathed)

🌷 + long live by taylor swift <3
thank you, karolina! 🤍 sorry this is 50 years late! i feel like i have to recommend "band books" — such as daisy jones and the six by taylor jenkins reid, and the final revival of opal and nev by dawnie walton, but i also feel like long live gives me very like, YA coming of age fantasy found family vibes, so like the raven cycle by maggie stiefvater, little thieves by margaret owen, the witch haven by sasha p. smith — and this one isn't YA nor is it fantasy, but it is very dear to my heart: portrait of a thief by grace d. li! trigger warnings are under the cut 🤍
mini little celebration!
daisy jones and the six: abortion, addiction, alcohol abuse, anxiety, cheating, depression, drug use/abuse, eating disorder, pregnancy, self-harm
the final revival of opal and nev: racism, rioting, sexual harassment (mentioned), death, anti-Blackness, infidelity
the raven cycle: x
little thieves: poisoning, whipping, attempted sexual assault (off page), physical abuse, emotional abuse, blood, emesis
the witch haven: grief, attempted sexual assault, blood, murder both on page and off, stabbing, vomiting, drowning, absentee parents, mutilation of corpses, the main character’s mother resides in an asylum for assumed mental health issues, mentions of asylums, alluded child abuse, discussions of Native American boarding schools, and underage drinking and smoking
portrait of a thief: death of a parent, hospitalization of a grandparent (minor), grief, violence, weapon descriptions

The Raven Cycle as Things Me and My Friends have Said
I saw someone do this with the Foxhole Court and since I have a huge backlog of inane quotes, I figured I'd do one myself Sorry in advance cause it's looooooooooong
Gansey at every opportunity: "Speaking of immortal people" Stiefvater hinting Noah was a ghost: "You see him fade a little behind" Declan: "[He]'s not a top or a bottom, he's in the corner" Adam at Harvard: "Apparently plugging in my laptop makes it shit itself" Ronan @ Blue: "It's goblin time" Gansey: "He's standing there...politely" The boys waiting to pick up Blue: "We're all hanging out outside. As friends" Gansey when his family friendly quest turns out to not be so pleasant: “I signed up for Mothman, not cannibalism!” Ronan: “My brain is an OSHA violation.” The Raven Cycle Series in general: “Maybe the book was the friends we made along the way” Noah : “420 fate it (Not that Ronan would but) Gansey @ Ronan about Chainsaw: “No nose piercing for the bird” Blue and Ronan @ Gansey when he shows an ankle: “He is the whore” Blue: “Imagine if one day, I just turned around and went ‘Sorry, I was domestic on main.’" Ronan teaching people how to handle Chainsaw: “No choking the chicken” Gansey and cargo short supremacy: “Pro-shoe, anti-pants” Gansey @ Adam: “You’re going to have friends and you’re going to like it” Henry: “Wrestlers are just drag queens for straight people” About Ronan: “Funny in a cosmic sense. Not a ha ha sense” Noah: “Their influence stretches beyond their mortal form” Declan making a profit off the stuff his dad dreamed: “He’s basically fantasy getting the bread” Ronan: (Said at least seven times in fifteen minutes) “I have a terrible idea” Ronan: “He’s got the book of mormon and he’s blasphemying all over this motherfucker” Ronan @ Noah: “Snitches get thrown in the microwave” Ronan serving either Declan or Adam, take your pick and therefore level of sarcasm: "Does sleeping beauty want his fucking pancake" (in the uwu voice) Ronan listening to EDM: “Mental breakdown? More like man, I can break down to this music”

Gonna take a break from the Anti-Tags for a bit. As much as I can love the ACOTAR discourse, I appreciate it when it’s new, innovative discussion. Venting is all good and well, to a point, but at some point it does also become noise.
If there’s something bothering one that much about the story — it’s great to put that energy into creating something new.
You hate the IC? Me too! Write a story where they all get cursed to be forgotten and stripped of their power until they learn their lessons.
You hate SJM? Oh honey, don’t even get me started. Let me introduce you to some of my favorite fantasy authors of the last few years: Maggie Stiefvater (Author of Bravely) Jennifer Donnelly (Author of Stepsister) Brandon Sanderson (Author of Tress and the Emerald Sea).
You hate a dynamic of the fandom? Think on it. Figure out why. Dwell on it. Write it down and turn it into healthy discourse.
In other words, it never hurts to be the change you want to see.
If you want to see more positivity about a character, make those posts.
If you wonder why there’s so much negativity over a certain one, flood the tags with love — instead of complaining over those who hate.
Goodness attracts goodness.
We should all vent sometimes. We should all be allowed. We should even, sometimes, be encouraged.
Yet, my thought of the night is that perhaps instead of talking so much about how other fans talk — it could be a good change to address the way that we do
A wise man once said that the only person you can control is yourself. The only consequences you receive are for your words. Your actions and your inactions.
What do you want to put out into the world? 🌎
Fantasy and creativity attract some of the deepest and most thoughtful thinkers into one place as almost anywhere else. Perhaps, what our community needs even more than it needs raining hellfire…
Is a candle.
Tumblr media
A soft warm light, a glow. A welcome in and exuberating hug. 🫂
Candles still burn. They have their defenses. (Don’t even get me started on the hot wax, y’all. Ouch!)
But more than that: they shine, they share, they supersede.
Have you lit someone’s candle today? 🕯️
Here’s some ways you can.
- leave an encouraging comment
- tell them their post made you laugh
- send an anonymous positive message
- ask genuine questions about their art or fiction
- listen to listen, not listen to respond
- be open to a new perspective
There. You did it, sunbeam. You reached the end of Guru Cece’s words to live by. May your night be blessed and lit by a thousand stars. ✨🌠

Sammy's Swynwrimo: Around the World in 30 Days — Minnesota
While the climate isn't quite cold enough to have official Winter Hollows it is very common for groups of winter fairies to make their own communities within Minnesotan towns. These fairies associate heavily with Spring Hollows in their areas and travel Northward to reconnect with the Winter Hollows they originate from.
The anti-Magick laws aren't as strict as some places (see: Detroit) but that doesn't mean that there isn't a great deal of anti-Magick sentiment. The blue state still tries its best to bring more equality to the table, and Magick Rights are greatly pushed for in urban areas, but you'll find in the rural towns that Magicks aren't a large portion of the population still. At least openly.
Being the Land of 10,000 Lakes (it's really 11,842 but who's counting?) there are a lot of water sorcerers (aka hydromancers) who flock to this area. Given how much material there is to work with. Especially working with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR)!
While it is rare, sometimes groups of mercreatures do get so far in as Lake Superior where they will stop on land in places like Duluth, MN. Rumor has it that there is a decently large selkie population based there.
There are whole hockey leagues dedicated to Winter Fairies and elemental sorcerers duking it out together. Whole team rivalries have popped up between the two groups but, of course, there are some teams that mingle the two Magicks together.
Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver Trilogy (Shiver, Linger, Forever) is fictional but based on real Minnesotan werewolf packs that she interviewed. These groups are much more attuned to their wolf sides and spend the cold months of the year in wolf form more often than the warm ones.
ValleyFair in Minneapolis has an associated "FairyValle" which is a section of the park that has restaurants and attractions for fairy and borrower patrons in their true sizes.
People joked about Prince being a siren but he was actually a Bard Talent Sorcerer. He imbued every song with a magical property that brought in fortune and luck and a sense of belonging.
F. Scott Fitzgerald was a vampire. Part of the reason he kept going back and forth between Saint Paul and the east coast was because he was avoiding detection to the best of his ability.
Many of the men who joined up straight away as the first state to offer men to the Union in the Civil War were Magicks. They couldn't stand to stand aside when it came to anyone's rights!
