Carnival of Aros - July 2020

I've been meaning to type about this for a while, but then this month's carnival of aros is about music, so I figured... well, two birds one stone I suppose lol.

Musicals are sort of like music right? I mean, I don’t think this is too far from the idea, even if it was meant to be about, like, individual songs.

This is about a whole musical where I just immediately felt that it was a missed aromantic opportunity.

Company.

Company is a musical by Sondheim from the 70s that seems to be brought back every decade or so. It’s about a guy, Bobby, on the night of his 35th birthday. He’s a bachelor, the only one among a bevy of married friends - all of whom wonder why he can’t keep a girl and hasn’t gotten married yet. The show moves through snippets of Bobby’s experiences with his friends… they’re all basically trapped between the horribleness of being married and the horribleness of, well, not. They love Bobby for his freedom, for the advice he gives, for the fun he brings into their life, for watching their kids, for always being there without being a detriment to their coupleness.

But the entire play is them badgering him about why he isn’t getting married.

There’s also three of Bobby’s girlfriends who wonder the same thing, what’s wrong with him, why can’t he commit.

One could also view it as Bobby internalizing everything his friends and lovers have said in the past and having a freak out about it. The whole show is kinda… disjointed in that, while it takes place all on one night, the majority of scenes are from the past or possibly not real.

The show is set up, for most people, to be a commentary about, idk, like growing up or realizing that you can’t be alone or you gotta be open and vulnerable, but like you need to share your life with someone and that someone… uhh, can’t be your friends cause they all have their significant others and that’s the way things are (*hard side eye* lmao). And that’s a real shame, because the show is this wonderfully accidental portrait of a closeted aromantic struggling not only with the pressure of the conventional relationship narrative, but with friends who buy into that. Bobby doesn’t know what he is, or can’t accept it, or can’t admit it, and he’s struggling to force himself to feel the things that come so naturally to everyone he knows.  He wants love, to be loved, but what’s in him, what he’s capable of, isn’t what everyone else has. I mean, look, he’s 35 and has never been in love, doesn’t understand love… *looks into the camera like I’m on The Office* come on.

I’m not going to go through the whole show, just hit on some highlights that scream aromantic to me, cause not all the songs are about Bobby’s relationships. Some are about the other character’s relationships. There’s 18 songs in this musical, lots of material.

We’ll start in Act 1 and go from there. About halfway through we get Bobby’s three girlfriends singing “You Could Drive a Person Crazy". This is an upbeat, vicious song about how they feel betrayed that he never takes things to the next level. They can understand if he was gay, or bad in bed, or actually dead… but Bobby is none of those things, instead he’s a crazy, troubled, person who has something wrong with him. He’s a zombie with a loose connection.

I don’t think I’m the only aro who’s been called similar.

Later Bobby sings about someone (“Someone is Waiting”)… an amalgamation of all his lady friends… pleading for this person to wait, because he’s ready. He wants to find them, if he’s not out of luck and too late. He already has what he’s looking for, theoretically… if only an alternative relationship structure existed. As is, he has to try and find someone new. Conform to the idea of the superiority and inevitability of the exclusive pair bonded romantic-sexual relationship.

When one of his friends is freaking out about getting married, close to calling off the wedding, he proposes to her. Because it makes sense. She doesn’t want to be married, he doesn’t want to be married, they can both be married and have their freedom, everyone will leave them alone.

“You have to want to marry somebody, not just some body,” says Bobby’s friend, deciding that she really does want to marry her fiance.

This leads to Bobby singing “Marry Me A Little”, imagining a marriage as being soft and respectful, no big fights, no big promises… and that he’s ready for that. Things like mutual respect and care. “We won’t have to give up a thing, we’ll stay who we are,” he sings. “I’m ready now.”

There comes a point as an aro (tho this applies to aces and people of any orientation who don’t really want a relationship as well), or for, I think, a lot, or a good number, of aros when you start looking at a future that doesn’t have the spouse and the kids and pets and picket fence. When you start to come to grips that you might be looking at an empty road instead. And it’s not necessarily that you don’t want that, or that you really want something else, but there’s a kinda scary point where you realize that it might just be you, alone. That no matter what friends you have or partners or whatever… that they’re eventually going to want to “get serious” and “have their own lives”, lives that don't include you as a main component. And “somebody”, anybody, that will make it so you’re not alone starts sounding pretty good. You’re almost desperate for it. If you could just find that right person, the one that would make it make sense to have the spouse and kids and pets and picket fence… you could do that. You could. It’d be so easy. And then you’d have someone and isn’t that what everyone wants?

Anyway… Act 2.

All the married couples sing about how much they love having Bobby around in "Side by Side by Side". But then also rag on him about how worried they are for him being alone and try to set him up ("Poor Baby" and "Have I Got A Girl for You"), which is par for the course I think for an aro.

There’s also “Barcelona”, where Bobby makes a vague, surface, “going through the motions” plea to one of his girlfriends that she should stay after they’ve slept together. He doesn’t try very hard and when she decides to stay, well he sings “oh god”. ‘Nuff said.

All of that is, you know, it builds, but the real highlight in Act 2 is “Being Alive”, which is where Bobby finally learns that he really does need someone.

Or, you know, when he’s been beaten down by life and his friends and partners so badly and so thoroughly that he decides that he’s not even alive if he’s alone. That he needs another person to make him alive. “Alone is alone, not alive.” Tragic.

He starts off with things like being held too close and hurt too deep, to which his friends comment about how he can’t possibly think that that’s all there is, telling him he has no reason to be alone, encouraging him to keep going cause he’s “on to something”.

Bobby’s seen the terrible bits of their marriages and, to his friends, also the good bits. But if you read Bobby as aromantic then he has no context for the “good bits”. He’s watched them dig at one another with secret info, argue, pester, have the other person say they hate it… and then it’s just fine, because of ~feelings~??? Incomprehensible magic. There’s a trick in there somewhere and Bobby can’t see it.

But Bobby’s trying. Forcing himself. If he just really thinks about everything they’ve told him...

“Hey, buddy, don't be afraid it won't be perfect. The only thing to be afraid of really is that it won't be,” says one friend. Yikes. “It's much better living it than looking at it, Robert,” says another. And I suppose if you do have feelings for someone, it’s not that bad.

Bobby finally… it’s sad, really… like I know it’s supposed to be a song of him figuring everything out, but it feels like a descent. He’s given in. He believes there’s literally nothing for him, he’s not living, unless he has another person. “make me aware of being alive” “make me alive”

Horrific.

I’m not entirely sure how, like if this show were to be reworked with Bobby as aromantic (and god knows it gets revived enough, it could happen if anyone knew what aromanticity was) how that would be communicated. Unless, like, you had Bobby admitting that he is aro from the start, but you’d have to assume that the audience would know what that was and actually, you know, not agree with all the other characters.

The latest revival in 2018 did a gender swap with Bobby, which is something. Now, I had thought it was just Bobby as the swap, but they swapped all her girlfriends into boyfriends and then made one of the married couples gay. Apparently, according to reviews, the whole thing was a revelation and really freshened up because, you know, it’s super hip and modern to do a “ticking bio clock” story line with a woman nowadays. (there's also the soundtrack to the gender swap on youtube, it's got Pattie LuPone in it!)

Personally, I would have just swapped Bobby… I’m not sure how well an aro reading there would play, not because there aren’t aro lesbians, but I feel like there are a lot of layers to a lesbian not wanting to u-haul and then getting harangued for it by her presumably hetero friends steeped in hetero society, just aside from any aromanticity.

But the whole thing takes on a very tragic tone when reading Bobby as aro, I think. I suppose what’s even more tragic is that Sondheim probably has no idea that he possibly wrote an aromantic character. He thinks he wrote a show about fixing someone who was broken. Just like the show Bones fixed Bones from being broken and how HIMYM fixed Robin and (tried to fix) Barney. I need to find a better way to end this, probably, we’ll see…

My friend and I been friends for about 8 years. They were my professor/advisor in college but we became close and friends. I graduated awhile ago like 2 years into knowing them. We were close in age too. I was legal age back then too. ( I add that in because I don't want anyone to think my professor did anything etc) I got close to him when I was going thru a bad abusive relationship and realizing I am/was an addict.

So anyways, I got super close. we would talk all the time during the day. He got me help and I appreciated everything he did. He saw me struggle and succeed many times. I needed that. Someone to care.

Well fast forward it a few years. We been trying to be friends again. He kind of disappeared. But I can't let go of all the unanswered questions I have. I have a grudge too I can't let go of. It's like killing me inside. Whenever We've tried to talk he gets very defensive and acts like a jerk. Like he won't show his true feelings or emotions. I've tried talking to him in person and thru texts.

Before anyone says to cut him out of your life. That's the thing i can't. My partner is his best friend. They been friends for over 15 years. I see this guy all the time. My partner knows my side of things.

Is there anything I can do to not always feel awkward with them?

I opened up to them about why I seemed so awful when we were close. I explained that I was with an abusive bf who fed my addictions. ( my drinking problem was a big deal among the other stuff) It drained me and made me something im not. Im learning to recover now tho.

To be honest, you can’t force someone to open up or behave in a particular way that suits you. You could keep going and going over things with him but it doesn’t mean that he ever will. Some people just are not receptive to that :/ you don’t have to cut him out of your life but honestly? You need to let the grudge go. Because all it’s doing is frustrating you and affecting your life. Not his. Because if he wanted to talk? He would. You’ve explained your side of things and you’ve said your piece, now it’s time to let go. I know you feel like you can’t? But you really can, you need to make the active choice to let things go. I know that’s not what you want to hear but at the end of the day we cannot force people into behaving or saying things they simply don’t want to. 

You can be casually friendly with this person but you need to let the grudge go. Maybe they’re still hurt by your past behaviour. And you know what? That’s their problem, not yours. If you’ve apologised and made the effort and they still don’t want to have more of a relationship with you or explain things to you? That’s on them. The only way you can move on is if you make the active choice to do so. I’m sorry if this maybe isn’t what you want to hear but it’s the truth. I wish I had the power to give you the answers you want but nobody can, maybe not even the person you want them from. You’re recovering - that’s a huge step and you should pat yourself on the back for that every day! It’s fantastic. 

But what will definitely help you heal even more, is to keep moving forward. Clinging to the past can cause us more harm than good. It’s something I had to learn for myself too, so I really do understand. People will not always behave how we want them to. You don’t have to cut him out but you can minimise the amount of effort you clearly put into getting what you want out of him. He might come around in time, especially if you’re being less forceful about it. Give him time. Best of luck.

A little late but I'm also in the underleveled and struggling boat. Are there any guides or resources with help along the lines of team building, leveling, what to focus on, etc?

I used this guide when I was starting out. It’s been updated since then with some newer dolls and info, thankfully. The biggest problem with this guide is that it’s so aggressively geared towards giving new players some basic guidance and helping them avoid “newbie traps” that it actually winds up giving harmful advice to midgame players. 

I did kind of start making a new player guide but I couldn’t really figure out what level of advice made sense to give. I’m going to try to give a shorter version of that guide here, but it would really help me if you (and anyone else who reads this and finds it interesting or helpful) ask more questions or call out explicitly what you find helpful and whether you feel like I’m missing anything or saying anything misleading, because I would really like to make more resources for other players and I feel like not knowing where other players are at is kinda holding me back. c: 

There’s kinda two different areas of focus for advice here; the first is just general base and resource management stuff. Unfortunately, people don’t make guides for this kind of thing. (I would love to sometime tho.) Here’s what I’ve learned. 

Running 4 logistics at all times is not optional. It is required. Do your best to refresh your logistics as often as you can. Stacking up your resources to 100-200k lets you farm maps as much as you like for drops (read: dummy cores) and XP. 

The fastest way to get a lot of dummy cores for linking your high-rarity dolls is crafting. This is another reason why logistics are so important, and learning to manage your logistics so that you have not only a good ratio of resources but also are building up your contracts over time is really important. If you want to do construction just for cores and don’t care what you pull, I recommend pulling for SMGS (430/430/130/230), as the UMP sisters have a high drop rate and give 3 cores each. (They’re also just really good, so you should raise them if you can.) 

Even if you’re poor, do 4 constructions a day every day. 30/30/30/30 is good enough. You’ll make your resources and most of your contracts back from daily quest rewards, plus you get a guaranteed core every day from the dailies AND you have a solid chance of getting at least one 3* HG from that recipe. It doesn’t seem like much when you’re waiting on 45 cores to get that x5 for just one of your dolls, but I promise it builds up quick. 

If you’re desperate for cores, running maps for drops sounds awful but honestly isn’t that bad over time. I personally liked 7-2E a lot but that’s because My Wife Is A Shotgun and having a shotgun makes it much easier to clear that map without paying a ton of repair costs. 0-2, 0-4 (retreating instead of trying to clear the map) and 4-3E are all fine choices and the guide linked above gives even more options.

The most important stuff to buy from the Black Market Shop, in order, is Combat Reports > Universal Parts > Cores (they’re disproportionately expensive imo so i value them lower) > Special Reports > Batteries > Enhancement Capsules. 

It should also go without saying that you should do your combat simulations every day and use up all of your sim energy. Leveling dolls’ skills is really important when you get to late and endgame, and will also make a big difference in night battles. Enhancement capsules become easy to come by once you are able to farm event boxes reliably (and thankfully you don’t need to be high level to do that), so you can spend capsule days on neural fragments instead if you want. 

I don’t personally like to spend combat reports on dolls over level 90 because getting from 90 to 100 is almost as expensive as getting from 1 to 90, but you get triple combat XP when fully dummy linked and can clear maps with much higher XP yield at that level, so it seems like a really inefficient use of reports. 

The other side, like you mentioned, is more in the game theory and meta world. What dolls are worth using? How should I combine them? What’s the highest priority to raise? 

Purely from a “clearing content efficiently” standpoint, your number 1 priority is M4A1, followed closely by ST AR-15 and M4 SOPMOD II. RO635 is also good but not quite as much of a hard requirement. But the three core AR team dolls are all virtually best in class and M4A1 is literally the best doll in the game when she gets her neural upgrade, with ridiculous damage output and unparalleled versatility. These dolls will carry you through content for your entire career in GFL. 

M16 is kind of niche and weird but certainly not bad to raise. I just wouldn’t consider her a top priority.

Your first echelon should be ARSMG (probably built with the AR team). If you don’t know what to build after that, build a second ARSMG team, then an RFHG team. If you’re diligent and make liberal use of support echelons, this should be enough to clear all story content right now (though I won’t promise it’ll be easy). MGSG echelons should wait until you feel like you have a good grip on your logistics management, because they’re very expensive to use and not that much better than ARSMG.

Great early ARs: FNC is surprisingly good even in lategame and is a solid choice thanks to how common and cheap she is to raise. OTs-12, F2000, SIG-510, and G3 are also good. You get an STG44 from quest rewards and she’s fine, too. Most ARs are good, but lower-rarity ones are obviously easier to raise. 

Great SMGs: A well-loved Skorpion will surprise you. Ingram and PPS-43 are also great choices. I had decent success with Type64 and Spectre M4, too, but they will be outscaled by higher-rarity options later on. The UMP sisters are excellent SMGs with UMP45 possibly being best in class, but they are a little more expensive to raise. 

You should stay away from most 5* SMGs unless there’s one you really love, because choosing your SMGs properly is actually deceptively really hard and spending a bunch of resources on one that doesn’t synergize well with your other options would be a huge bummer. The one exception might be Vector, but only if you really invest in her skill.

Great RFs: People hype up M14 for a reason. She’s cheap, the game hands you a ton of copies for free as achievement rewards (and you can get more of her from map drops easily), and she scales really shockingly well, remaining a really strong choice even in endgame content to this day (and probably forever). SVD and WA2000 are high rarity but so fantastic that they are worth raising if you don’t have any other options. SKS and FN49 are also good low-rarity options; the quest reward Springfield is worth raising, even if she doesn’t really reach peak performance without her special equip (and thankfully it’s not hard to farm for!). 

Handguns starting out are just kind of tough. There are two reasons for this; one, they don’t provide their full power buffs until max dummy links; two, they can’t equip an exoskeleton until level 80, which means they’ll get shredded by basically any enemy that looks at them funny. If you’re having a hard time running RFs + HGs at mid level, it’s fine to put an SMG in front for a while just to absorb damage. Later on you will want to practice luring and stalling enemies by moving your HGs around manually, and if you can master that, RFHG will become a lot stronger (well, technically every echelon will, but RFHG will benefit the most). 

Again, please please please let me know whether or not this is helpful and don’t be shy about asking follow up questions. This game is kind of hard and tricky and weird and I want very badly to help! The more I know about where my followers are at, the better advice I can give!

This is a Jake Kiszka x reader story but will involve the others.

This will be a multiple part story and pretty lengthy, I also may be slow to upload because my work schedule is pretty crazy. with that being said here we go!!! (p.s sorry about any errors I will proof-read but may miss something)

The next day at school you felt a little strange, as you were walking into the school you noticed Jake and his girlfriend fighting by her car and you run smack into a  wall and fall backward right on your ass in front of a group of people they all start to laugh at you. You got up and walked quickly into the school and into the bathroom you could feel stinging coming from your hands you looked down and saw that they were scraped pretty badly you heard the bathroom door swing open and saw Ronnie rounding the corner.

“Oh my god, you okay I saw you bite it out front?”

“Yeah I’m fine, I just scraped the shit out of my hands”

“Holy shit, that looks pretty bad”

“It will be fine, just stings a little. I’m so clumsy”

“Note to self y/n can’t walk great” Ronnie said with a giggle

“Haha very funny, I should probably get to 1st period”

“Yeah see you in third, try not to trip anymore” 

~Time Skip To Lunch~

you were waiting in line to get your food when you felt a tap on your shoulder, you looked up and saw Danny & Sam

“Hey Guys, Hows the day going”

“Fantastic Songbird, just another day in paradise” Sam says sarcastically

“How’s your day y/n” Danny said

“Terrible actually, I fell on my ass this morning everyone saw, I have been feeling off all day I’m not sure why”

“Well, that really sucks songbird but guess what”

“What Sam”

“You now get to eat lunch with two of the best people in the world and 3 other sub-par people” you let out a laugh and Danny joined in

“Sam you think super high of yourself don’t you”

“He dose”

as you guys made your way to sit down you noticed a very pissed maybe sad Jake you couldn’t place it. You just shook it off and sat next to Ronnie.

“Hey sunshine, you're day turning around?” Ronnie said in a sing-songy voice

“Negative, but hey like Sam just told me things are looking up”

“They sure are songbird, in hours you will be cast as Sandy. Months away for finding out you're secretly in love with me. There is one downside tho.”

“Sam, I can promise you that the second part will never happen. What’s the downside tho?” 

“Keep lying to yourself, that's fine. The downside tho is you’ll have to kiss Jake in the play so sorry about that” he said with a laugh

“Fuck off Sam, why do you act like your five years oid” Jake snapped

“Oh what’s wrong Jakey, Sarah break your heart again” 

“Fuck you Sam” Jake got up and stormed out of the lunchroom.

“Wow Sam way to be an asshole” Ronnie said while shaking her head

“Does anyone know what it was this time?” Danny asked concerned

“Nah, I asked him this morning and he just told me to leave him alone.” Josh said

“She makes me so mad, I hope he learns his lesson or he is just gonna keep getting hurt” Danny spoke with a sad tone

a quite grew over the group and we ate in silence. 

~Flash Foward to 7th period~

You took your seat next to Becky and you guys were making small talk before class started you felt Jake sit next to you. You turned to look in his direction he looked at you and gave you a small nod, you just smiled softly. Mrs.Jones walked in and started to play the vocal warmup. Everyone started to sing, we ran through the first song quickly next was summer nights Mrs.Jones had you guys come to the front and sing. Jake didn’t really give it his all and Mrs.Jones was upset.

“Jake & y/n, Will you guys go run through the song in the other room, Jake you’ll have to give it your all or someone else is gonna do the solo”

“Yeah okay, sorry Mrs.Jones. I’m a little off today” Jake said quietly. You and Jake went to the other room to run through the song.

“Hey Jake, you good?”

“Yeah, I’m fine” 

“You sure?”

“Yeah, Drop it, I don’t want to talk about anything with you” he sternly said

“Oh okay, you want to run through the song then”

“no, not really”

“we probably should, at least once”

“yeah, whatever”

~Sings song~ 

“you were super flat y/l/n, didn’t sound good at all” Jake said in a mean tone

“Wow thanks for the helpful feedback Jake” you shot back

“Just letting you know you sucked, maybe you shouldn’t try-out. probably best if you didn’t” he snapped

“oh yeah, thanks for the advice asshole”

“Don’t say I never helped you”

“I think I’m done here, go fuck yourself Jake” you got up and walked out of the room and took your seat. you started to get in your head what if what Jake was saying was true. Maybe you shouldn’t try-out your thought were interrupted by Mrs.Jones  

“You guys feel like your ready to run through it again?” Mrs.Jones asked as Jake came out right after you

“Yes Mrs.Jones” Jake spoke softly as she started to play you gave it your all just to show Jake how wrong he was when we finished Mrs.Jones had a smile on her face

“That was great you two, now you’ll just need to work on your chemistry”

“Okay, will do” Jake said as you silently nodded.

You went back to your seat, you were pissed at Jake, he really got to you, your face remained hard as a rock when the bell rang you were walking out as fast as you could when Mrs.Jones asked you to stick around saying she already talked to your study hall monitor and told her you would be late. You noticed the boys were still in there, you could tell they were listening.

"I just want to let you know that you have a really great voice, and I really hope to see you at tryouts"

"I planned on, but I'm just super nervous about it"

"Let me tell you, you have nothing to worry about. I know people who would kill to have a voice like yours, acting is a skill you can learn and master, but singing that's something you're borning with"

"Wow thanks, I feel like I really needed to hear that"

Your conversation was interrupted by Sam

"Songbird you shouldn't doubt yourself, you have an amazing voice, Mrs. Jones couldn't be any more correct. Besides you ran lines last night with Jake and he said you were really good, you have nothing to worry about" you looked in Jake’s direction and he looked annoyed that Sam brought him up.

"Thanks, Sam"

“I’m so happy your friends with the Kiszka boys, That's so great. You boys should start a second band and have y/n be the singer”

“Funny I said she could just replace Josh when he gets annoying” Sam said with a laugh

“That’s an idea Sam” Mrs. Jones said while joining in with Sam

“Hey nobody is replacing me, Sam you better stop saying that”

“Don’t worry Josh I couldn’t replace you, you guys slap too hard, it would be useless”

Jake walked up and asked Mrs.Jones for a hall pass she nodded and wrote you all one as you headed to the door you realized Jake and you were heading the same way dreading the next five minutes you walked out the door. As you rounded the corner in the hall you couldn’t believe your eyes there right in front of the both of you was Jake’s now ex-girlfriend sticking her tongue down some guys throat. You could feel Jake tense up next to you she immediately turned her head and laughed in your direction you didn’t look at her, and Jake was looking at the floor. Without thinking you grabbed Jakes hand and gave him a reassuring squeeze he looked at you with a sad look and you smiled and nodded, two can play at this game. As you walked past you pretend Jake just said the funniest thing you had ever heard, he also gave it a convincing chuckle just keeping eye contact with you not daring to look in her direction. You could feel the eyes burning into you both. He then let go of your hand and put his arm around your waist and pulled you closer to his body as you got to the door he hugged you and whispered

“Thanks, you didn’t have to do that”

“as much as you’re an asshole, you don’t deserve that. Fuck her” you could sense his smile, jake then did the unexpected and kissed your forehead you felt your face heat up you just turned before he noticed and walked to class. As you took your seat next to Ronnie

“What’s up buttercup, why are you blushing”

“I’m not, just a little hot. You will not believe what I just saw when walking to class with Jake”

“What?”

“Sarah making-out with some dude in the hallway”

“No way, poor Jake, What did he do”

“Well without thinking we pretend to flirt and hold hands, I figured two could play at that game. she was legit standing there because she knew he would be rounding the corner”

“Fucking bitch, quick thinking tho her plan backfired.”

“Yeah, she just stared at us, if looks could kill. You should have seen how sad he looked honestly heartbreaking”

“Sad thing is he will probably just go back to her, for some reason he thinks that's all he can get”

“He can do so much better nobody deserves to get cheated on and hurt so much”

“I know , I tell him all the time. Are you excited for tryouts?”

“I’m a little nervous, but Mrs.Jones basically gave me the part already”

Firstly, thank you so much for the compliments!!! I don’t know how useful exactly any advice I could give you will be, since most of it comes from drawing a lot and watching drawings even more, but in general to pick a pose usually what I do is think of the scene as if in movement? As in, what the characters are doing, and how they’d move if I were looking at them while doing it - keeping in mind the characters personalities helps me with this a lot too. 

Take for example the confessions drawings I’ve posted a couple of days ago: it’s true that there’s no words nor movement anywhere in them, but as I drew them I had a pretty clear idea of what they were saying and how the characters would react in those situations - Jirou’s shy and easily flustered, so she’s averting her eyes, unable to keep eye contact, and closing in on herself a bit, hiding her face and so on; in the concept, Kaminari was the one who confessed, so he’s holding her hand, tentative, because he’s unsure about how she’s gonna answer (it’s all stuff that didn’t actually make it in the drawing, how he reached for her hand, how he’s gonna close his other hand around her knuckles, but in my head it was a complete scene and I just picked one frame of it all to draw). The same goes for Bakugou and Kirishima - they’re rowdier, louder, more assertive and inclined to take everything as a fight, so this time around I went for a scene in which Bakugou straight out yells his feelings at Kirishima and Kirishima answers me too (again, I had the before and after in my head too, I just picked the frame that best coveyed what I was trying to do)

As I said I’m usure about how much this might help you orz it’s just my way of doing things, and it mostly comes from the fact that I was originally a writer honestly, so thinking of a whole scene makes things easier for me #rip

Well, this is just the feeling I got, but I’d say they do plenty for each other quietly and softly in canon too, don’t they? Bakugou especially, pointing out to Kirishima his strength when he can’t see it for himself and always trying to find a way to cheer him up when he’s down and giving him space when he needs it, training together, studying together, worrying over one another, Kiri making sure to always know what’s up with Bakugou and following him to help him, just generally being there for each other so that if and when they need they’ll know they’ll have someone they can lean on - their relationship is really mutually supportive, isn’t it? I cry so much they make me so happy ;^; *sob*

hi so i just gotta vent to somebody!! i just got a terrible grade on a midterm paper and the professor wants to meet with me to discuss what went wrong bc she's heard "such high praise" from all the other profs. the thing is i know what went wrong: i'm a very informal writer and i love pushing boundaries/the rules and it's a self destructive thing, like the closer i get to graduating with this fucking MA the worse i'm doing in classes and everything. i'm like hopelessly unconfident in my (1/?)

writing and have no self judgment anymore, like i can't tell what's good/acceptable to turn in and what is complete navel gazing garbage. this is like academic humanities writing and i'm turning in all this bullshit personal narrative that's completely irrelevant to my degree. i wrote a fucking paper on the hrought and SWORE in it and i'm too casual and colloquial. i used to be so good at school and was the "talented writer" but i can't do anything well anymore and idk what happened to me (2/3)

so basically uhhh i feel like i'm too far gone for advice, but any words of encouragement you have would be great! i got the bad grade on an 8 pg midterm paper today but i ALSO turned in my 100 page master's thesis draft today and i'm incredibly unconfident and embarrassed of my work on that one. also, love the new blog! tryin to think of positive things. like harry in that suit. you're great. thanks for listenin (3/3)

im sorry that youre going through this right now :( sometimes the worst kinds of conflicts are the ones with yourself. and as someone who is a serial self-sabotage-er, i feel this big time. i think maybe those types of expectations, like the ones placed on your past writing, on top of probably being stressed from school (a masters thesis??!?? that must be nuts), is just creating a combo thats throwing you off your game. is there anyone that you could send your work to before you submit it to your profs? someone who could really read things over and give actual constructive criticism, that might help you bring yourself back to the median? like id fully extend my services if thats something you would want/be comfortable with. now, what i dont want you to do is get really down on yourself about this -- we all go through rough patches, and i think if you explain to your prof what is going on, even if just a little insight, if theyre decent, they’ll be understanding about things. for the future tho, keep in mind that the feeling that youre experiencing right now? it can be avoided. bc you still are that person whos a great writer! you just have to find your way back to that part of yourself, so you can lessen any potential stress and/or embarrassment. i believe in you and think that this is just a blip in the radar ♥

hell0 thank you <3 yeah hispanic people are very diverse, especially with varying nationalities, and especially with puerto ricans. i personally know a lot of puerto ricans who are white passing so it’s really not that uncommon. everyone’s different, and as eir said, white passing POC are still POC!

second of all it IS going to be ok, you shouldn’t force yourself to do something you hate if it’s really impeding on your mental health that much. it’s not good for you in the long run, even if it pays well. like, at what cost do you want to sell yourself in order to make money? my point is you made a good decision but lacked the foresight, which luckily is something that can be remedied easily. (well...hopefully, but job hunting is never easy :\ ) if you’re still in this situation by the time your bills and everything catch up to you, you can always seek help from family and friends or look into loans...find someone (or multiple people) who will stick by you and support you through this, because this is something way too hard to do alone. (if you don’t have anyone, i’m here for you ;-; ) i honestly don’t have any good advice for finding another job because tbh that’s something i always flounder in, and i’m gonna have to do the same thing by the time i finish up school in the next month AHHHHH

hmmmmm i kinda get a weird shiny glitch too but it’s only with certain things, and it’s usually remedied by clicking on the sim’s different outfit categories until it goes away lol. but if it’s on ALL of the hairs...hmm...i’m assuming you’re talking about alpha? because i don’t think clay hairs usually have that problem. check if laptop mode is on, if it is, turn it off!! that’s the only solution i can think of :{

i don’t have an answer for this question because i DO often feel overwhelmed and i have to take a step back and remind myself it’s not the end of the world if i don’t have time to go in game or edit or whatever. i think it’s because i set up this timeline for myself in terms of goals i want to reach with my story throughout the rest of the year and i get frustrated with myself when those plans become delayed because of other obligations. (for example i definitely thought baby wallace would’ve been born by now lmao syke) i was getting burnt out very easily before, which is why i’ve been taking it slower lately (that and i’ve been working a lot more so i don’t have as much free time as i used to :\ ) the good thing about having different characters tho is that when i get burnt out on one thing i can just switch over to another thing at an opportune time (which is what i’ve always done with santi and girooni)

anyway yeah i am kinda organized (in my own weird way) in terms of story planning, controlling the pacing and key events, and that’s definitely the reason i’m able to post so frequently. i used to have multiple free days a week where i could go in game for long amounts of time and get lots of scenes done at once, but at this point in my current schedule i just basically go in game whenever i'm free from the clutches of capitalism (jk we’re never free save us bernie) which means i only have time to do like one thing in game but it seems to be working just as well so far.

im glad i pretty much got it. i can really relate to everything going on. i can see a lot of myself in santi and molly & i get it. the movies make you think you fall in love and everythings fixed like they fill that void in your soul and i mean sure they fill parts of it but you need to do that yourself and not rely on someone else. Your story is real and you can tell your writing from personal experience because theres so much feeling. u think ur fixing urself and u end up more hurt in the end

i’m so glad you can relate ;-; i think that’s one of my proudest accomplishments so far. i mean santi has always been relatable for me because he IS me...or at least partly me, just like all my characters are. but i never thought anyone else would feel the same way, so it means so much to me that people enjoy him as a character because of that.

anyway YES exactly. i hate the “no one’s going to love you if you don’t love yourself” mentality, i think it’s a toxic way of looking at the benefits of genuine self love. the sentiment behind it is true, but it’s a backwards way of looking at it. someone’s else’s love shouldn’t be your motivation, your own love toward yourself should be your motivation. when you look at it in the other way, you do end up getting more hurt in the end.

LATELY i’ve been just enjoying playing the game because i’ve gotten burnt out on story things and just playing is such a nice break from it haha. whenever i have to wait in game for it to be a certain time of day for story purposes, i go play with girooni for a few sim hours to pass the time and it’s fun for me lmao. i’m looking forward to my story winding down so i can get back to doing more gameplay things like i did before but at the same time i’ll always do at least something story related because i like the sense of direction it gives y’know.

i’ve never actually tried any challenges, not even just regular old legacies because i would always either get sick of the sims i was playing with or get too attached to them and not want to go to a new generation lmao. i was never interested in any challenges tbh. i like watching other people do bachelor(ette) challenges tho heheh

aight so...i wrote this big long thing (i’m a really wordy person, and i ramble, so bare with me) when this ask got sent like a month and a half ago. i typed it up on my phone, but mobile tumblr does this thing where if you take more than x minutes to write a reply, it doesnt let you save what you’ve written as a draft and it default posts to your main. and then it just doesnt post ever...so now i’m here, on desktop, to write you this long-overdue reply, Anon.this ask came shortly after a post/comment/reblog on tank size recommendation, so i kind of want assume that this same person who was discussing with me sent this ask, but i’m not going to assume but this person asked on anon... I’m currently writing a long-winded caresheet about bettas (which i plan to post for peer-review tomorrow), and so far i’ve written this about Tank Size:******“2.5gallons:The absolute minimum, I do not recommend keeping a betta in anything less thanthis because even in a cycled 2.5, keeping a *stable* cycle is very difficult,and requires more frequent water changes (1-2x per week at least). In a tank this small, you’ll mostlikely need to buy an adjustable heater as well, since the smallest (trustworthy)heaters on the market are 7-7.5 watts, and depending on where you live or howhot/cold you keep your house/room, the heat will fluctuate too often, or be toohot or too cold since the volume of water is quite small. A 2.5 gallon bettatank is doable.5 gallons:A great median for those who want to give their bettas a wonderful environment,but may be cramped on space, move around often, or whose living arrangementshave aquarium-related restrictions. A cycled 5 gallon tank with a bettagenerally requires a water change 1x a week at least. (I actually think this is what the post was about originally, that one i was having the discussion on before this ask arrived...if i find it, i’ll give a link to it)2. addresing the “it is the same as putting your betta to a bucket and calling it a day.” statement:they make 5 gallon buckets so i see no problems there [somewhat sarcastic, somewhat serious tone]. SURE I’m glad you liked those! Everything by Memphis is A+ and I love it so if you haven’t you should check out more stuff by them ( No Ordinary Love is super nice, That’s Just Life is very dear to me and so is Divinity, Speechless is… my otp song for every otp ever tbh) -  Bring Me The Horizon is my fav post-hardcore band and both MMF and Chiodos are that genre so if you don’t know them give them a try! (Blasphemy, Run and Doomed are between my faves out of the latest album, and since you liked Under Your Halo you’re probably gonna like Follow You too) the album right before is amazing too if you’re okay with less melodic stuff, but the further back you go with BMtH the harder to listen to they get, just a heads up - Sleeping With Sirens are on the softer side of post-hardcore lately, Fly, Left Alone, Trouble, Fire and Empire To Ashes are some great ones, between the many, and, uhhhh, at this point I might have recced Nothing More a hundred times but let’s make it a hundred and one, try Funny Little Creatures, Do You Really Want It and Go To War out of the newest album! If you’re into punk and female voices you should check out Tonight Alive too, Jenna has one of my two fav female voices in rock right now (Crack My Heart and Temple are the latest two songs out!) and since I always rec stuff but I never rec anything by my favorite band ever, you ever heard of Alter Bridge? They’re more towards hard-rock/alternative metal, but check out Blackbird, Fortress, I Know It Hurts, Cradle To The Grave and Broken Wings just to make it one for every album I really, really adore this band and everything they ever made

It’s not a stupid question, don’t worry!! But I generally like to leave myself in Horikoshi’s hands for this sort of stuff, since I both enjoy the costumes as they are AND don’t want to be disappointed in case what I hope for doesn’t actually happen - that said, I’ve mentioned before that I’d really like Aoyama to get redirectors for his laser on his palms and for Kaminari to get a close combat weapon, since with the quirk he has anything metal would actually work wonders for him! He mentioned a sword, but I rest my case that tonfas would be cool, I really want him to use tonfas. A “costume” I don’t understand is Hagakure’s, by the way - would be nice if she got an actual costume and also I don’t really get why she’d wear gloves at all?? Mirio’s costume was made using his hair, I really want her to get something similar! That’s about it tho, I haven’t really thought much about anyone else in that sense~
