thinking about fandom dynamics and how people so viciously attack each other over different tastes in characters/ships/whatever

the cycle with “problematic characters” is always the same, character who is bad and fucked up exists and people like them but terminally online syndrome means that anything you like reflects on your personal morals and values so they somehow construct this elaborate alternate reality where that character is somehow justified in their fucked up-ness and attack anyone who criticizes said character cause they see it as a attack on them and their values specifically

and in turn people who hate said character will attack people who enjoy that character because they think liking a character=agreeing with everything that character has done

saw this happen ten years ago with komaeda and its now happening again with anasui because time is a flat circle

talking to lily about this and she says fandom discourse came to be as a stand in for political discourse in a era where actual political discourse is unfulfilling and somewhat pointless due to the rich class rigging the systems of power

this makes me think that the younger generation is using fandom as a “entry level” to politics, like if you are so young that you can’t really grasp actual political discourse and make sense of all the different layers of power then fandom is your only actual avenue to express your political beliefs

and that leads to people going as far as only enjoying characters they politically align with. the problem is when those people upheld everyone else to the same standart and go as far as to attack people for liking characters and ships they deem as problematic

i wish i had a easy solution to this but it all comes down to each individual person realising that your interests and likes don’t reflect on your morals and values barring extreme exceptions

So I subscribed to Tricycle (a like, 30+ year old Buddhist magazine) the other day and they do regular haiku contests, and they also have classes and stuff about how to write haiku. I've never really been one for poetry before, but thch after going through their backlog of haiku and stuff I think I might give it a try at some point

Bullying from anons warm and cozy, oh to be tormented by people who knows which buttons to press and use this knowledge specifically to make you flustered, happy, and feeling silly. what's not to like!!

But honestly tho, i almost mentioned in the other ask i got today about whether i'm okay with my blog becoming an ask blog like this, but then i didn't bc i thought it might be mean spirited, but now i'm right back on it-- is that one undeniable perk of the anon is that i actually check my dash far less now.

And while there will always be content i will miss seeing (especially information post about irl issues which i do think are important to be aware of, or good arts, or what people i like on here are up to), by god am i not missing reading negative petty fandom stuff.

Even things i agree with leave me with a major bad taste in my mouth because when it's all you see, it just ends up being like poison tainting everything else.

Being able to take a step back, mostly enjoying the things you enjoy, and having the negative stuff being something you discuss with yourself, is much more freeing at the end of the day.

So in the end just genuinely messing around, being silly, making fun HCs just because why the fuck not, is really so, so much more enjoyable to me.

Like, sure, i've been scarred beyond repair by some stuff shared here, but that's the price to pay -- but in the end since i'm having fun, what's not to like yaknow?

so like, i actually genuinely appreciate the anons, they do stop me from doomscrolling and spiraling on most day because everytime it pulls me back into some comfort zone, even if it's to terrorize me in it. Sometimes it can take a bit for me to go back to the headspace needed to answer the anons -- but i take that, everyday, over just reading negative stuff that just ends up leave me spiraling alone with my thoughts yaknow?

Ive been litterally losing my mind over @tbgkaru-woh 's designs for like 3+ days now straight. ESPECIALLY HUAISANG!!!! Im planning to make some proper art with their designs at some point but for now this is the closest I have. I also have now developed the habit of giving Huaisang braids that you'll see in my other doodles whenever I happen to post them ehe

lady whistledown will always be a major point of contention be it for the viewers or for the characters themselves. im NOT here to discuss nor engage in any of that but rather im here to advocate for more explorations of penelope leaning into that aspect of her. yup.

penelope will forever be the most interesting and complex character for me especially in bridgerton because the addition of lady whistledown in contrast to the bright, airy, and sort of fantastical setting of bridgerton is so highlighted, but it's done well that it serves as a tool that not only propels the plot but also fractures the brightly-colored lenses we watch the show through and makes the characters more grounded in reality (because she holds the mirror to every person of the ton, including herself, reflecting that they are equally messy as they are refined in the way they carry themselves).

anyway, dear me, im rambling! what im advocating for is more of penelope being LW, like really leaning into that "Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me?" aspect of her because she is tame. she is gentle. until, of course, this circus life made her mean. but don't worry folks, they already took out all of her teeth! oh, but honey, she will leap from the gallows and levitate down the street, crash the party and like a record scratch she'll scream, "who's afraid of little old me?" and honestly, you really should be.

and cut scene to her pushing love (in the shape of a stubborn, stubborn but equally tormented man) away because seriously, colin bridgerton! she's already got a lot on her plate! there are mobs hunting her down, the queen is hunting her down, the world is hunting! her! down! and he won't ever have it in him to handle this—all of this...even if she wants to. even if everything in her is screaming to let herself go for it. because how could she? how could she when she knows she doesn't deserve this and that it'll hurt her even more when she confirms that he's as afraid of her as everyone else.

lady whisteldown was a girl's angry cry to the void that somehow landed on the people's ears until it became this whole thing that's bigger than her, bigger than the world that never welcomed her in its fold. it's a double edged sword that granted her the means to fight for herself and for the space she was discouraged of taking up, but came with it a nasty glaring wound that never closes just festers. it cripples her as much as it empowers her, it's a dichotomy, an interesting paradox that shouldn't be perceived in black and white.

and then as we explore her stepping into that power she will have to face the ugly parts of her and grapple with the conflicting feelings of guilt, anger, and isolation. like that's powerful.

ive read a fic of this nature once and i LOVED it and it was amazing ++ it also explores characters like eloise and edwina (another untapped character!) it's called gone girl and i still think about it at least thrice a day.

(hopefully this readmore works right i dont really know how they work! ->) headcanon/au rambles below :3

OKOK so they werent that bad at 1st. after their 1st "incident" when they tried 2 ascend the void worm and got sent back, that!! that was their turning point. i think they were good friends with arti and pebbs pre-incident. they were cheerful, kind of like gourmand? happy with the way the world works. unaware of their true power. this strays pretty far from canon by itself but it gets . way wackier

(the incident) they communicate with every echo, and reach their max karma. i remember i had a comic? animatic? idea with them, enot, nightcat, martyr, (which all work together in my (anthro) au, anthro specifically because i use it for more of my serious headcanons? and stuff? i guess?) and some form of sos. they snap and end up ascending enot, or hurting them significantly. nightcat begs for them not to go to rubicon. they know something bad will happen. but they push past everyone and go anyways (theyre clueless, they just want the thrill they get from mass ascending creatures. horrible little beast.) they let the greed get the better of them and end up trying to ascend the void worm, restarting the cycle. except it gets worse. the cycles end up slowly becoming more and more screwed up, every time they attempt to ascend the void worm, trying to find the "perfect" or "correct" way, they were determined. except. they realized that they were getting nowhere. the same exact thing happens.

somewhere. sometime they rip a way out, did someone do it for them? did they figure it out themselves? not sure. they find their way into the main timeline. (fun fact! they arent the only one that does this, so do enot, nightcat, and martyr. theyre all kind of funky, enot and nightcat are glitchy little beasts/twins that do what they want. lol) they arent any different, with their previous knowledge of how screwed up the cycles become if they give in again.

they become part of the colony, learning the ways of the normal colony-living slugcats ("normal" glances at spears and riv (enot and night also live there. so)) and become curious about gourmand and monk's study of the world, taking an interest in their natural medicine.

IM not very good with coming up with stories so there probably is bad consistency or things that dont make sense. i just see saint in a very unique way i think so i have . many thoughts but i dont know how to perfectly align them with words. i made alot of this up on the spot to make their story flow a little better, but im not the best writer. shrug

Krokus lives inside of a Whale, Right next to the Tallest point of the Red Line, Reverse Mountain. Reighley lives not only on Sabaody which is close to both Mary Geoise and Fishman Island, He is also an expert in Coating ships. (And I guess if all else fails hes a pretty darn good Swimmer lol)

Shanks has built up a large strong crew of absolutely no Devil Fruit users.

Buggy was already a Devil Fruit user before they knew any of this stuff. And I feel like he is in a League of his own, I dont know his actual motives anymore.

Oden wanted to open up Wano and I guess we wont really find out why he felt that was nececary for now.

Current generation of Celestial Dragons might possibly not know about the innevitable sinking of the world, But their Uniforms are Desinged in a way that they could still live underwater if Needed. The 20 kingdoms must have been very aware of the worlds inevitable fate.

I think when Reighley says something along the lines of "Maybe you will reach a different conclusion" to Robin when talking about the Void Century. I think the actual situation of the Ancient Kingdom and the 20 Kingdoms must be alot more Grey than just "20 Kingdoms bad" Maybe the ancient Kingdom is the Originator of the Mother Flame.

Im not sure, Im just rambling out some thoughts here really, Regardless I think that such a Major piece of the Puzzle has been placed and we can start to make some more serious predictions.

The cool thing about being an artist is seeing art EVERYWHERE. Like until I started painting I never really noticed set design and outfits and all that fun stuff but now it’s the first thing I see which makes everything SO FUN AND COOL but that’s not the point of this post this is the intro paragraph motherfuckers. So you know what’s an art form? WRITING (“obviously writing is an art form threefuckencrows. Make your point” IM GETTING THERE).

Some writing is more art than other writing. And I think the more I read books (for context, I read A TON when I was younger and barely touch books now—I’m really picky and it’s hard to find stuff I like) and find my taste the more I’ve found that the type of books I like just have pretty writing. Consider, for a moment, The Dreamer Trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater. I have never posted about this but it’s one of my all time favourite series’ and if you liked the raven boys oh boy. Oh boy oh boy. Anyways. The dreamer trilogy is a book series. This is an indisputable fact. It is also a work of art. Not in the metaphorical ‘it’s so amazing’ way, as in that is art just like any painting in a museum. Every word, every sentence is a brushstroke and a fucking masterclass in being good at telling a story. You can’t read that then read Harry styles x y/n on wattpad. You can’t. It’s not possible. So what’s the point here? The point is that. A good book may have a good plot, and good characters, and those are super important. But the writing should make you FEEL. Consider, also, vicious by VE schwab. I have made 1 post about this series and it was 30 minutes ago, so sorry for the total shift from the scheduled program but I promise we’ll be back on track soon (or maybe not. I obviously am not a writer. I can write a persuasive research essay for English class, or a really strange rambly tumblr post, but that’s not the writing I love. That last reblog inspired adjacent thoughts that had me rambling on in the tags longer than I initially thought that tangent would carry me. And then I was like mmm no, feels too hijack-y so I just reblogged as is. #and then the exact same people in every fic or headcanon they write: meanwhile

#in the group chat where everybody except that one character checks in at least once a day to bitch about that character

#and how much they all hate them.....

#And its like lol. How can you complain about how much other characters love and appreciate this one particular character

#with it LITERALLY recurring as a character beat and thematic point that many of them regularly reference this character

#as an inspiration or someone who totally changed their life in some way....

#and then....convince yourself that you're writing all these other characters IN character....even though.....under your pen.....

#they all hate and demean this character constantly and since they cant possibly be deserving of credit for inspiring or helping

#other characters that YOU actually like.....now there's just a huge character shaped void in everyone else's character arcs and storylines

#where that character who influenced and helped them so much....SHOULD take up space due to their impact on other characters development

#anyway. My fave examples of this are TW....every character in canon constantly cites Scott McCall as inspiring them/changing their life

#TW fics: *all the other characters gather in his BFF's basement for their weekly Here's Why We Should Totally Kill Scott McCall meeting

#or in DC comics.......countless characters habitually refer to Dick Grayson as the closest thing to a universally trusted

#and respected hero aside from Superman and hold him in high esteem as one of the most skilled heroes out there

#Countless fans of other DC characters: If every instance of another character mentioning that fugly bitch Dick Grayson doesnt include at

#least one insult, one thing they blame him for and claim ruined their life and one joke about his inability to master even the most basic life skills let alone
