He’s known for assigning absurd punishments with a straight face.

One student fainted after running 345 laps out of 1000. The reason?

He insulted Noel Noa during class.

Despite this, he’s a literal angel during parent-teacher conferences. Smiling, soft-spoken, even brings data charts on your kid's progress.

No one believes what he’s really like on the field.

Except the students. They're terrified.

He doesn’t do emotions. Doesn’t do empathy.

He once gave a student who got 18/20 the most soul-crushing feedback of her life. She cried in the bathroom. He didn’t even blink.

The only way to distract him from diving too deep into horror psychology?

Ask him questions about his brother Sae.

He teaches Minecraft strategy, creative redstone builds, and how to hack school Wi-Fi (discreetly).

He has a Discord server with half the school in it. They call him "Code Dad."

The principal tried to fire him once.

The entire student body held a strike in front of the school with handmade signs saying:

Needless to say, he’s still here.

Sleeping through class. Teaching greatness.

─ “This is the position most mammals use. Unless you’re a dolphin. They’re freaky.”

He once brought his own sperm to class.

Yes, his own. For “scientific purposes.”

Was he fired? No.

Why? No one knows.

The weird part? His students are weirdly fascinated. They pay attention. They pass exams.

It works. Somehow.

Just… don’t make eye contact when he starts talking about human pheromones.

Agent Phoenix, Florian, walked into the safe house with caution. Their eyes looked around at the piles of components strewn about the room.

Schematics and graphs were left sticking out at the crevices of the mess.

"Dr. P? Are you here?" They entered inside, making sure to avoid knocking anything else. After all, they already did so much to ruin her work. It was only right they try to minimize the damage.

"I'm here, Phoenix. There's something going on with the way they implemented recursion in this function. I can't modify it the way I want it." Her voice came from the kitchen, prompting them to head there.

"If I sit listening you talk about the proofs right now, I'd doze off immediately." They shook their head, using their telekinesis to pull a chair closer and sat on it while placing a paper bag on the free counter. "Here. Please just ignore me. My handler took a day off for some reason."

"That 'some reason' is... Oh. Do you have a strained with them?"

"It's... complicated. I love them. But sometimes, it's hard to swallow that when you're acknowledging reality. Ma and practically everyone was in survival mode for a few years, you know?" They took off the ties putting up their hair to comb through them with their fingers. "While she did her best not to, there are still moments where even the older children acted like parents in the family. Sometimes, I'm confused if it was the typical responsibility of an older sibling or if it was because the adults..." They sighed, taking a glance at her screen. "That's a lot of code. When's the last time you ate?"

Heat rushed to her cheeks while they wordlessly 'looked through' the paper bag and passed a container to her. She gave them a thanks before taking a bite. "This is delicious, Phoenix."

"I got it from my ma. I find it fun to be a little helper sometimes. But... yeah. I'm scared of her. I know she loves me, you know?"

"Then what's the problem?"

"She endured so much for my sake. 'Quite an ambitious daughter you have.' 'She'd be better off a nurse.' 'She'll marry anyway so why bother letting her learn that much?' And then I left STEM just to be an agent? Just what can I even say? Did I just... throw everything away? Did I just toss everything they sacrificed for me for nothing? I can't face them, doc. I just can't."

"When I was making the implants, I wasn't exactly looking for someone to use it to cook, Phoenix. Or do any of the feats you did. But it was a pleasant surprise."

"But I didn't. You-"

"I know a thing or two about hearing whispers and gossip, Phoenix. And there's no one else I'd trust with the implant like you. The future doesn't seem as bleak with you in it, Phoenix. I'm sure your mother feels the same way."

"Would... would you have been fine if your robots wouldn't choose to remain as field agents, doc?"

"If they proved they could handle themselves, I suppose I could have been fine with it."

They finished tying their hair up as they reclined on the chair with a subtle smile. "... Thank you. I'm sorry-"

"I'm not hearing it, Phoenix. If you want to make it up to me, how about listening to me for a couple of hours?"

"Deal!"

A small conspiratorial smile graced Dr. Prism's face as she started describing the lines of code and typing comments, noticing how easily they fell asleep.

She knew how much they needed the nap.

How is it already almost March omfg.

Anyways Happy Valentine's Day month!!! This year, I was swamped with work, so I didn't get a chance to make Valentine's Day art. I did make a Valentine's piece last year though.

BUT we did have beloved @magunalafay make these Valentine's Day cards this year for the community!!! <3 If you missed it, well Happy Valentine's Day!!!!!

She made these as a gift, and I love her very much. Maguna u r so talented

This month was pretty busy for me, but I'm super happy with the progress made this month ^^ I feel like I've started the year off in a pretty good groove after it being all over the place for a hot second, yay!!!

This past month, Etza and Druk's routes. With the revamped demo finishing its revisions, it left a lot more time for me to focus writing on full route development.

If you missed the announcement, I FINISHED Etza's first draft!!! YAAAYYY!!!! FINALLY!!!!!!

That means 4/6 routes are finished in terms of the base writing, which is so exciting to MEEEEE. I've always seen Etza's draft as The Milestone because with their route finished, it would mean the four Central routes are done writing. And to me, while there's a good chuck of writing left, we are nearing the end of it.

There's only two routes left and that means it's about ~100k words which is CRAZY compared to when I had ~300k to write (:cries:). Even if that sounds like a lot, once I start chipping away at those routes, that 100k goes into the "double digits" aka 90k...80k... etc. and that makes me want to pee my pants

We also finished editing Druk's route, yay!!! So we reached a lot of milestones this month ^^

We are nearing the end of the Vui background commissions. It's very bittersweet; I'm so used to mentioning him in my devlogs now </3 There's only like 3(?) more BGs left for him to make, and then all of the BGs for the game will be finished. Very Wild! I think Alaris will have 25ish BGs, and they are all Stunning.

It's been a while since I showed you all a BG, so I'll give you all a preview of one I just got in!

I personally have been doing a lot of sprite work this month to finish the final art assets for the demo. I added some expressions to Druk and Aisa that I'd been procrastinating (I don't even know why I was procrastinating them). And I finally finished Mom and Kimura's updated sprites! Patreon already saw them, but I'll show the new versions here too ^^

Aside from sprite work, much of my "art" time has been on finishing up/putting together the last of the screens for the GUI. Specifically, I got THIS BABY up and running. She is my crowning glory.

Memory Screen to Replay Unlocked Free Time Dates

Oh my god.... You all have NO IDEA how much of a pain this was to code. There is a transparency gradient going on in the left and right B&W previews (courtesy of community programming angel feniks/shawna).

And then the effort to have the Titles and Descriptions of the Previewed Date change tilted me on Multiple Occasions. But we finally got it to work thanks to bestie @siyo-koy pointing out I just coded one stupid "if" statement wrong LJAFSLIEFJIEJ. But the effort was WORTH IT because I'm so proud of her!!! I hope you all like it too as a way to relive Free Time Dates. I had a lot of fun with the Titles and descriptions.

I also put together the Stats and Affection Screens

So I coded both of them a bit differently from each other. The Personality Screen shows you a breakdown of your traits so far. Think of it like a pie graph! So in the preview picture, your choices indicate you are 33% Brave, 16% Charismatic, etc. I felt like this was a more natural way to portray personality rather than how many bravery points you've collected so far!

And then for Affection, it works in a more traditional way, where it counts it based on how many you've gotten out of the total amount you can get. This way, as the story progresses, how close you are to the person reflects how much your relationship as developed!

I've also added little descriptions underneath each that change depending on the percentage. So for example, if you have gotten 82% of the affection points for Kuna'a, the description of your relationship might change as well hehe

Other than that, I've mainly focused on getting the demo together. We released the beta demo earlier this month (? LOL). And the feedback has been so kind!!

A lot of this month was spent polishing so that the demo can be ready for early access and eventually public release. I updated sprites, made sure music crossfades with each other so that transitions between soundtracks feel smoother, I added/polished all of the screens I needed to (e.g., Memory Room, Full Credits, Cleaning Music Room, Adding Stats Screens), and I FINALLY as of yesterday added the Voiced Lines!!

One thing I added in the Extended Demo that I'm really happy with is the use of Extended Pronouns (courtesy of Angel Feniks). Below is a preview of how it works now!

Basically, you can choose multiple pronouns for yourself, including custom pronouns (e.g., xe/xem, fae/faer, etc.). On top of that, you can choose how often you'd like the pronouns to alternate (e.g., every line versus every scene) and what kind of terms you'd like to be used for you (e.g., neutral vs. masculine vs. feminine)!

I didn't have any time to really play any games this month because I was drowning in work LMFAOSLJIEF. I did play the Threads of Bay demo by @lavendeerstudios and it was GORGEOUS! Very cute game with lovable characters and charming visuals. Andrew, I will have your number

Every other section was really long, so I'm going to throw it here even though it's not market research. But Intertwine recently hit 600 ratings, which is crazy. Best and Worst of Both Worlds (Part 16)

You told him your opinion on Montgomery.

"I see." He replied. Yves deadpanned at you before pulling you in for another kiss on the lips. Your face and the tips of your ears heat up, you're still not used to this yet.

He pulled away and chuckled at your bashfulness. Trying to cover your burning face with your hands is futile, as it only makes him tease you more.

"Call me if you need to go somewhere. I'm available for you any time." He slung the straps of his handbag around his shoulder, and Yves prepared his car keys in his hand.

You told him 'okay' as you're rubbing the last of his lipstick marks off using a piece of wet wipe.

He stroked your head, traced his fingertips down your jaw and finally held your chin. He tilted your head upwards and gave you a forehead kiss.

You whinged as you now have to wipe off one last print. He bid you goodbye before closing and locking the front door behind him.

Soon after, you dashed back into your room trying to escape your housemates hollering.

Days would go on like this: Yves breaks into your house using the spare key, scare the shit out of you when you open the door to see him standing there, receive adequate kisses, eat (br)lunch, talk for hours, landlord comes over to fix more stuff, eat dinner and finally, at around midnight- sometimes later, Yves would leave.

You would go to sleep almost immediately, but definitely looking forward to the next day.

He started coming in earlier and earlier, working on his things during times where you had nothing to say. You asked him about his work, he tried explaining it to you but you zoned out. It's so boring and complicated. Full of numbers, charts and graphs, you couldn't care less.

Needless to say, he cooked all your meals and did all your chores for you. You always protested, because it isn't his job and you should be responsible for taking out the trash or keeping yourself alive.

Yves would simply ignore you and do them anyway. If you're particularly worried, he assures you that it's some sort of a hobby of his to take good care of you. If you insist that he stops, he will guilt you; making you think that you're unnecessarily taking away part of his joy in this relationship when it isn't even harming you. So you just let him do what he wants, and you benefit from it greatly.

You really like him. He lets you take a nap on his lap while he types away at your desk, Yves listens to you ramble about your interests and occasionally adds his own fascinating commentary to it. You were astonished to know he has a whole database of random fandom trivia in his head. He washed your sheets and made your bed for you every morning.

He lets you hog his portable fan to yourself. But eventually, his bargaining powers lead to your landlord installing a ceiling air conditioner in your room. The best part? No rise in rent.

Yves gradually introduced you to a solid skincare routine. It started off with a simple face cleanser and moisturizer. Then he added toner to the regime. Then a weekly exfoliation and bi-weekly usage of sheet masks. It was hard for you to remember to do it or have the motivation, but Yves didn't mind maintaining your skin.

You just love the tingles you felt when he reclined you on your chair and he massages your face with the moisturizer. His fingers skillfully work to unravel you.

He made your house actually enjoyable to live in. You haven't gone out in three weeks and that didn't alarm you. You are glowing, physically fitter than ever, clean and most importantly, happy.

You have the drive to do so many things. Like learning a new language, learning to code, learning to knit or crochet, learning to draw... anything you wanted to do, Yves is always the expert to consult. He would buy the materials you need and teach you step by step. It made sense for him to be an extraordinary mentor, because you found out that he was also an exemplary lecturer at your university at one point.

You confirmed that he's currently a researcher, specifically, a research mathematician who works together with other branches of academia including but not limited to human Psychology, biology and sociology. The gist of his project has to do with predictive algorithms and probabilities. It's impressive and complicated, too bad you're not interested beyond what was described in a nutshell.

It's no secret that you look up to him, seeing that you're also a student looking to advance their education.

But it begs the question of his age. He has done so much in a short span of time. You wonder what his true age is.

But it's almost impossible to know because he would be offended whenever his age is brought up. It seems like he despised being perceived as ancient, which you understand. He probably comes from a time where youth is overly worshipped. You let it go, it isn't like his age affects you in any way.

It doesn't mean you didn't try searching him up. At first you suspected that he was lying because you couldn't find anything about him working at your university on the internet. But you sent an email to the administration asking about him. They came back with the confirmation that Yves is currently a hired researcher there. Strange that they knew who he is without knowing his last name. You guess there's only one Yves in the entirety of his faculty.

Speaking of names, you were shocked to find out that Yves didn't have a last name. After tons of relentless teasing from Yves for wanting to know his surname and a platitude of shame-induced face coverings later, you finally discovered he doesn't have one. This was bizarre to you, but Yves only told you off for being insensitive towards him, as not everyone has the privilege of a last name. It seems like a touchy subject, better not bring it up again.

Although it has been around a month since you think you first met Yves, you can safely say that you're madly in love with him. He is way more attentive and caring of you than anyone you ever met. Not even your parents or guardians can compare. Absolutely no one in your life has treated you this well.

There is that nagging feeling that something is very wrong. It wasn't a "He is going to leave you for someone better" feeling, it was more of a "what if Yves is secretly an organ harvester and he's healing you up to make a good price on the black market?"

But due to blind love, you forced yourself to brush it off as some implausible, impossible, silly thought.

...is it though? Yves does give off uncanny vibes sometimes no matter how suave and sexy he is. He has a lot of things to hide and the knowledge that you have of him is not enough to save you if he ever decides to steal a kidney or two.

Maybe this relationship isn't good for you. It keeps giving you inner turmoil to lose sleep over. This is definitely too good to be true, no one likes being a full time babysitter for their partner; this has to be a trap! You think you should quickly break it off with Yves before it gets too--

You were interrupted from your thoughts when you felt the chilly air from the air conditioner nip at your skin. The bliss of not being boiled alive by your own fluid trickles down your forehead.

You close your eyes and grin, letting the wind blow on your sweaty hair. This is lovely, you're so grateful to have Yves in your life. If you didn't have him here, you wouldn't be able to enjoy this temperate luxury.

Yves lets his focused gaze linger on your form for a few more seconds before replacing the remote back onto the holder. Yves pressed the button on his stopwatch, the beep was soft enough to go unnoticed.

He checked the temperature, the time and the humidity of your bedroom before logging them all into his computer. Yves turned his head to look at your position on the floor, you're splayed out like a rag as gusts of cold air strike your body.

He opened another file, which is the floorplan of this house. His eyes scanned the screen, noting down the exact coordinates of your precise location.

It would always be like this. You would start formulating thoughts and suspicions on Yves, spiral so much that you contemplated ending everything to protect yourself, then something interrupts your mind and eradicating the unwanted ideas entirely. Be it a change in temperature, texture, hunger or thirst. Sometimes, it's because you feel you hit your Yves-interaction/social quota for the day. So he would excuse himself and leave your house until you recovered.

He always comes back at the perfect time. Just right when you're starting to yearn for him. Yves ensures he never leaves for too long to make you think he's neglecting you. But he wouldn't come back too soon to make you go "yuck, this bitch's face again?"

Your signs could be as minuscule as a lower lip twitch, a brief, split-second movement of the eye, flaring of nostrils, positioning of your arms or even a change in the depth or rhythm of your breathing.

Or it could be an increase in heart rate, body temperature or sweat beading from your pores. Hell, it could even be the sound of you swallowing your spit or the smell of irritation.

They are all telltale signs that you're about to do or think about something undesirable due to overwhelm or underwhelm.

It's scary. He could just detect it with his superhuman senses. But ignorance is bliss, you still didn't know that he's puppeteering your environment accordingly. He would very much like to keep it that way.

Yves must admit, he has been careless. For the past three weeks, he failed to consider that his daily presence is wearing you down. It was his own fault for disregarding his calculations, Yves was originally only supposed to see you four times a week; that was the most optimal arrangement.

But he was enamoured, as desperate and feverish as you to be together. He just hides it impeccably well. Could you blame him, though? This was the first time you acknowledged him, the first time Yves got to kiss, touch, and hug you as freely as he wanted. The first time he gets to observe past the use of cameras- he does not need to hide. He gets to put his elaborate meal plans to use, you're eating his cooking, he's washing your clothes and you're accepting his backrubs. This is the closest so far to the ideal he wanted in his life with you. Anyone would be greedy in his situation.

But he flew too close to the sun like Icarus did. The wax melted off his wings and now he has to face the consequences that would have been avoided if only he had controlled himself better.

He's starting to notice you're not as positively receptive to his kisses as before. Sometimes even outright grimacing and shuddering in disgust when you think he's not looking. You spent a couple minutes longer in the bathroom, sometimes up to an hour, claiming you had stomach issues. But you didn't have problems with your digestion, your boyfriend made sure of that. He meticulously checks everything that goes into your mouth and he knows you didn't even pull your pants down. All you did was sit in the corner and scroll on your phone.

You did it just to escape from Yves and he's fully aware of that.

Likewise, he hugged you too much. Yves was only supposed to give you 12 hugs, lasting 8 seconds each at most, spaced throughout the day. However, you're in his arms for a total of 6 hours a day; 2250% of the maximum.

Subconsciously, you know he's there because the brain never stops working.

Of course, you would be sick of him! It doesn't matter if you came from an affectionate family or you turned out severely touch-starved, with extreme figures like these, anyone would be nauseated with his presence by the third week!

Yves fought back the urge to run the numbers back the fifth time. The cold hard facts are there, he made a grave mistake. Painstakingly recalculating everything is just a pathetic attempt to appease his denial that he lost control over himself.

He sighed and propped his head up by an elbow, absentmindedly fiddling on his calculator. Yves's eyes flitted up to the monitor. You're curled up into a ball on your bed, scrolling on your phone. Most likely to try and catch up with your own me-time. Yves could see pixels of bags forming under your eyes.

He shook his head and decided he must rectify this. Yves got up from his seat and sauntered out of his office, switching the lights off but leaving his surveillance equipment on.

Meanwhile, you yawned, closing your eyes and letting your phone slip next to you. Finally but reluctantly drifting off to sleep.

I'm drowning in my assignments, so it's time for a challenge.

I have two final projects this semester, and both are chonky. I have a draft paper due for one of them tomorrow (for which I'm still doing the data analysis... eeeeek) and a draft report for the other (computational) project due next week. I should be a lot more on-edge than I am, but I'm a little desensitized to failure due to my roller-coaster academic history. Eh, it is what it is and today I'm just here to crank out code and graphs!!

On the table for today:

data analysis for algae growth project (lots of data conditioning in my immediate future because I took shitty data)

send an email to my nonlinear dynamics professor with an update on the computational project (maybe chuck the project up on github if I happen to capture and exploit a moment of ambition)

walk though the math in papers related to the nonlinear dynamics project. The problem is that I do not have a good foundation in Navier-Stokes stuff, and I think getting myself to understanding is going to be the scariest part... but probably still easier to accomplish than the implementation.

Musings: I recently got a foldable bluetooth keyboard to use while coding at the library, and don't get me wrong, it's a lovely ergonomics upgrade from my injured-tyrannosaurus-rex coding posture, but I have come across an unexpected problem: apparently without the heat of my laptop, my fingers get cold! Now I need to make sure to keep some fingerless gloves in my backpack for this stupid HVAC overload. With respect to my to-do list I'm a little doomed, but I think the best I can do in this situation is make progress. Every 25 minute pomodoro session is a win when you're churning out tasks you dread. I might talk about the source of my dread in a future post--my relationship with academics is a ~super angsty romantic slow-burn~ that deserves more time and thought than I can give it right now. Ok! Back to work! I've sent too long writing this anyway, but it was a good break. I might post my forest as an end-of-day check-in. Good luck to all of you in your work and studies! it's essentially a couple of data analysis things?

i've been processing + plotting some data to look at the sun's intensity (power emitted per area) at different wavelengths. this gets me an intensity vs. wavelength graph. i'm doing this for really cool reasons but alas they are also really niche reasons :/

i've also been processing + plotting some images (this part has been the most difficult for me ;-;). they're essentially just images with some random and fake stars in the background. i'm isolating the parts of the image that occur at the wavelengths i'm interested in (this was the worst bc the images are just pixels so i had to figure out what pixels corresponded to what wavelengths etc. evil evil evil evil). anyway then i took my little isolated image and broke it up into even smaller pieces and averaged the intensities of all those (binned + averaged those bins). this was so i could go from a normal looking image to a graph with a single line of data (intensity vs. wavelength again)

from what i understand i'm supposed to compare these two intensity graphs and idk, have some revelations about my fake data? but idk how to do that so i will be asking my advisor for help on monday, lmao

anyway i hope this made sense? explained something? i think this would be so much easier to explain with images but i don't have anything other than my silly little niche graphs, sorry :(

I actually really really like this graph because of the stark difference between Earthian and Spacian issues. What I really like about this scene (and maybe I'm reading too much into it,) but look at the way the text is formatted on the screen. It's distinctly different than how it was when Elnora was trying to get a callback from Layer 33, specifically because, for some reason, it's displaying Eri's name. It didn't display Elnora's name earlier in the episode, and so the only way that makes sense is if, when Eri was talking to Lfrith and introduced herself by name,

It was listening.

Bonus: We can't see what the display on Nadim's Lfrith is saying when he goes permet score four cause he's currently having his brains melted out of his skull, but I'm gonna assume it says something along the lines of "You are currently having your brains melted out of your skull."

Three-Dimensional Characters

I did it. I’ve cracked the code.

I figured out what dimensions (or graph axes) people are talking about when they say “three-dimensional characters”. It’s “what they know about themself”, “what they don’t know about themself”, “what they show to others” and “what they don’t show to others”.

Like this!

So, for example, let’s take Katniss Everdeen. Fantastic character, iconic book series. What does she know about herself? That she loves her sister and would do anything for her. That’s the opening knowledge of the book, everything hinges on it. That makes her an active character, because she has this core of belief about herself. 

She shows that she’s angry at the Capitol. It’s imminently important to her that she do so, it makes her feel like she has personhood in a system that’s trying to strip it away. She fights and fights some more, and does not make compromises.

Of course, she doesn’t know that her anger at what is being done to her and her sister, while completely justified and probably her only available coping mechanism, actively harms her chances of survival. Like, a lot. She cannot play along, she cannot make allies (except for Peeta, who puts up with a lot because he knows she can fight better than he can), and thus she is a pretty bad leader. Even so, she makes do and starts a revolution anyway, because most people are just as angry as her.

And, finally, she doesn’t show (to other characters, not to the reader) that she’s terrified. She and her entire home district are in mortal peril, and she’s like sixteen. She doesn’t know how to protect Prim besides fight for her, and she fights so hard and so uncompromisingly that she gets in her own way. It’s an internal conflict and it makes her seem three-dimensional and very human.

These four things are kept in mind in every scene, and get specific based on each circumstance (and they’re a sliding scale too, especially on the “show” axis, she obviously trusts some people more than others). They even change over time somewhat, because she’s a dynamic character. So, yeah.

I’m gonna do the same thing for the characters I’m writing rn under the cut

Keshiro from Empty And Become Wind! He’s so fun and silly and goofy. He knows that nothing can get in the way of his duty as a Raqkesh, and he doesn’t know how to treat his own personhood, outside of his duty, with his charges. He shows that he’s kind of a funny bitch, if someone can’t understand some aspect of his identity (being an airbender, being a Raqkesh, being an agender man, what have you) then he thinks it’s hilarious to lie to them and confuse them further. He shows, to the people he trusts, that being a Raqkesh is a dead-serious thing and violence weighs on a person in the abstract. He doesn’t show, unabstractly, that he’s in pain.

Din from Empty And Become Wind! I love him so much, he’s just a Guy in Situations. He knows that he’s perfectly able to live the life he currently has, and he doesn’t know that he’s gay and the world is a lot bigger than the homophobic little Fire Nation towns he’s been in all his life. He shows that he’d like to meet someone that isn’t absolutely fucking incompetent, and he doesn’t show that, despite the haters, he is capable of whimsy and curiosity.

And those things are all on display during the scene that they meet! Din is guarded because he’s meeting someone who could, to quote popular Disney animated film Aladdin, show him the world and he doesn’t know if he trusts that, Keshiro is being a funny bitch but when someone’s actually in danger he steps up and even risks using airbending to help, and he might tell Din about his charges and the spirits, but he only references his own past (mentions Ther) when it’s imminently relevant that he explains why not having OSHA is bad, actually.

That’s why they’re so fun to write!

the alternation of generations is, I think, one of the hardest things for people to learn going into plants just because it’s unthinkable to us that anyone would add extra steps. why would you do this when the penis and the vagina could simply remain on one’s body, and then one could have sex and give birth like an animal, the obvious simplest way to reproduce as stated by the animals? and the answer, which I hyperfixtated on for months in 2022-23, is that it’s really Fucking complicated and you actually need to be a calculus understander and equation chef (which at this moment I am not) to get to the cutting edge of the outsourced penis problem. like under further inspection the alternation of generations reveals itself as not a baffling quirk, but rather as primordial-ooze level plant architecture with sticky threads of cost and benefit in every Got Dam green agal descendant on the planet, and at a certain point you actually can only discuss the raw source of the madness in graphs and theorems. it’s a 100% dark academia madness inducing topic with many twists and turns.

anyway my overall review is that it was really funny when ferns had cheat codes to it, would have loved some of that in the newer flower story arc in part because it’s the closest thread I can grasp to actually understanding something (presumably????) deeper about this weird sex system from a flaw/exploit it had (and still has in ferns, to be fair), but flowers just seem to treat it like something to compensate for and patched it in an update, so reducing the gametophytes down as small as possible and leaving the female ones attached directly to the sporophyte IS surprising when people learn about it. you would never even know they had any kind of wild sex cycle because half of the stages are microscopic and protected behind like 8 layers of tissue, which makes sense because yes they’re ‘vulnerable’ stages but it’s still annoying of them to do to me personally, you know?

Text Issue

I logged onto my Computer at my house to start working on my Game and for some reason this happened.

However something interesting Continue isn't like this. This is probably because it is always the same across every single question.

I changed the Text Colour Black because I wanted that colour any ways so it would contrast with the Choice Button.

The Text was awfully big so I decided to select each Text Box and in Details

I searched up Size and Under Appearance and Under Font then in Size decreased it from 30 to 10.

This however also resulted in the Button's Size decreasing

However I thought to make sure they were the correct size again I would type in one of the Text's a long sentence to make multiple layers of words so the height of the Buttons would also increase. And not to my surprise this happened.

The Text not only went over the Button limit and the Vertical Box limit but also the whole Canvas. This is because there is no Wrapping for it as it is set to 0.0 and in Unreal 0.0=Infinity. Obviously it doesn't take Einstein to figure out that I don't want my Text to be off the screen, so I got to set up some Wrapping. In Details you search up Wrapping and then in Wrap Text At I put in 10.0

Then..

this happened. Now it Wraps too Early making its Height way too High and its Length way too short. So with some testing and trialling with the Numbers I got to.. wait hang on

No matter what I changed it to it would always be like this. At this point my only option was that I had to have 0.0 Wrapping and just keep my answers short.

I tried to fix the Text being all [A] by going into ClimateQuiz_Widget and selecting out of Variables Question Structure Question

Then went to Default Value and typed up 1+1 and other numbers as Answers.

Then I looked and saw there was no way to add another Questions so I looked at one of my blog post. Then I realised I was meant to do this in ClimateQuiz_HUD so I changed them back to what the Text Blocks say when I renamed them to.

Now in ClimateQuiz_HUD these are the Questions I have with the different Answers

There was another problem where the First Question wouldn't work so for simplicity both Questions will be 1+1 with the First Question's Answers will be 1, 2, 3, 4. Then the Second Question's Answers will be 2, 4, 3, 1 to make sure I know the difference.

It knows what I'm typing but it isn't showing it.

I added a High Score to the Score system but because this game is never going to need that anyways, and even if by some miracle it gets completed there is no way I will be able to make this High Score System work so I'm going to remove it.

In Score Card the Widget

Simply all I need to do is select it

And pressing <- Backspace, then poof its gone. Now in its Event Graph I just deleted the Code for it

And while I was still in here I decide to Change some things that I wanted to.

First my Restart Button is really small

So to change this I selected the Button and searched up Size, then Under Appearance then under Style then Normal (woah its 2025 you can't say that) then Image Size values.

And no matter what I set them as it didn't change anything it stayed the same size, so instead I simply dragged the Corners and made the Button bigger Manually

Then increased the Text by searching Size and changing the number to 60

Then changed the Font to the Minecraft one.

Then for my "you scored : 00" Text I changed it to "You Scored : 00" because I love my CAPS. But there is a line of Code that uses the Sentence "you scored :". This is in ClimateQuiz_HUD's Event Graph in Append I just needed to change the Text.

While testing I kept selecting different answers on the same question think that I had moved on. (This was partly due to the Glitched Text) and I forgot that I had to click Continue. To fix this I searched up Color and Opacity but it didn't work so I went to my Scorecard to check and it was actually Background Color and so I choose a Lime Green.

JUST BITCHIN'

Christ, I need a long-term solution to my substance use.

The wise answer would be something like, "quit all substances and substitute the bad habits with good ones such as working out/running, commit more time to my favorite hobbies (programming, electronics, etc.), and spend more time with my family and friends."

But, let's be realistic. I love the feeling substances bring me. The body-tingling from kratom, the fuzzy/drifting sensation from ethanol, and the instantaneous relief from nicotine.

I may be somewhat smart, but I am not wise. Not with my decision-making, anyway.

The monetary cost of those three is the primary problem I have with using them. I know of the recipes to produce ethanol and I know of how to extract the alkaloids from plant-based material. I know of no way to make/extract nicotine (maybe from tobacco leaves, but, come on), so I may have to find a cheaper nicotine supply.

I am developing more positive habits, however.

I run more frequently than I used to, and am trying to do it every day if for even a mere mile.

My body is not how I want it to look. The image that I have of myself doesn't fit with the image I see in the mirror. Running is fun. I like it.

I have done ZERO programming in weeks; even though I think of the code I would write throughout the day. It's a passion of mine that I NEED to commit more to. Specifically, developing my desktop app Graphs and developing a small programming standard for PIC microcontrollers. The idea of doing that brings me joy and hope. Of course, actually doing it is tedious and involves seemingly endless cycles of trial-and-error, but it's something I feel in my bones that I have to do to feel like I am doing something of value.

so i've been using Obsidian for a couple months as the home base for all my fic writing, and have been thrilled so far! i dig its simple layout, powerful feature set, and there are tons of plugins to customize what you need. also love that it works across devices and syncs to your iCloud (rather than syncing to their own servers). and that it's free for personal use.

it has some interesting features like "canvas" and "graph" type documents (i have one of the latter that tries to graph relationships between characters and entities in my story) but most value i've been getting has been from plugins

main plugins i've been using:

Copy document as HTML -- very handy when it's time to post a chapter to AO3. it means i can embed the html for text conversations right in my Obsidian doc, and it'll display in a readable format while inside the doc, but the HTML all gets copied smoothly, along with and <strong> tags for italicized and bold parts (which is HUGE because it solves the problem where copying text with italics from Google Docs or other apps will end up adding weird extra spaces when pasted in the ao3 markdown editor)

Novel word count -- shows word counts for individual documents, but also will show the aggregate counts for entire folders/subfolders. super useful when you have a folder for a multi-chapter work and individual docs for each chapter

Word sprint -- lets you run sprints right from within the editor, keeps track of word counts and goals, shows motivational messages if you pause writing during the sprint

OneLook thesaurus -- no link because this is a plugin I wrote myself (but can provide the code if anyone's interested), but this uses the same API as OneLook to return results right in the editor. you can click to replace a word, check its definition, or add it to the search. the wordy plugin does something similar but i wanted a slightly different UI.

anyway it's been a game changer so far, 10/10 now it's time to do some sprints while i'm still on vacay~

i also just use it in place of my Notes app for random brain dumps and reminders

Just a quick update and half-write-up on Flax now that I've ported over the bulk of my flight model from Unity...

HOLY CRAP I LOVE THIS ENGINE! Part of the ease with which the code flows is skill and maturity with regards to writing code, sure, but it helps to have a toolset that's modern and encourages good practices as well! Between Dotnet 7.0 and a new version of PhysX, Flax meets Unity with a lot of comparable features and components. The existing parity is augmented further by a very fast and responsive editor that recompiles changes nearly instantly (while Unity will sit for a minute a lot of the time), meaning I can just iterate and iterate and iterate without spending half the time waiting to compile!

While there are still some quirks, like the editor camera behaving... differently than Unity's, the Animation Graphs crashing if you use a buggy node, and general "newness" of the engine that take some getting used to, the workflow is familiar and comfortable and not at all strange. Moving from Unity to Flax is far easier and simpler than trying to pick up Godot or Unreal. There's far more transferable knowledge between Unity and Flax than either of the other two big name engines.

Bless the devs for also making the engine open source, I love being able to recompile and rebuild it with native 64-bit coordinate support! It's not perfect - you still have to work around a 32-bit graphics pipeline and physics engine, but these are small little nibbles of problems compared to wrapping or rewriting all of Unity to achieve the same behavior, as I've done in the past. I can still transfer that knowledge and add some meaningful behavioral improvements to the engine as forked for CVW5!

I still have yet to get a handle on the graphics pipeline and really refining the rendering and animation flows for our needs on the CVW5 team. Fortunately, with how speedy and familiar Flax is, I don't anticipate that knowledge will come together quickly enough! The UI tools are excellent and easy to use, and the rest of the engine's tools are just as lovely.

Anyway, that's my thoughts on the matter of game engines. If you haven't heard of Flax before and are considering leaving Unity's ecosystem, I'd recommend giving it a try! More attention is bound to make it better, so I hope this helps some indecisive devs explore new and exciting engines in 2024!
