Welcome to the blog of the AO3 Demographics Survey 2024!

We are an independent fandom research project who recently performed a large-scale survey of AO3 users, asking questions about demographics, preferences and behaviours.

We are now in the process of releasing and analysing our results, which you can find on AO3.

If you are interested in following along with the project, this is the place to do it! We will be making official announcements on our progress here, including any requests for public feedback.

hey just over here wondering how there are people who actively dislike and mock fanfiction and the fandom communities and ao3 users. how are you going to look at ao3, look at the six million registered users and the many more unregistered ones, and the eleven million pieces of art people have crafted, and actively hate on that. how are you going to mock a community where we create out of love, we consume out of love, and nobody makes a profit. how are you going to do that. ao3 is one of the purest social platforms left on this planet, how are you going to try to ruin that. pray tell.

like i get if maybe RPF or even just in general fanfiction doesnt appeal to you, but like. nobody's getting paid. we write because we love it and we read because we love it and ao3 is run because some people decided "hey, it's worth having a place to do that" and nobody wants any kind of tangible compensation for that. how are you going to decide that those acts of love are invalid because they dont inherently resonate with you. like why.

i know theirs is proprietary, but anyone know if anything close? a nice serif skin with good leading adjustments?

Guys I'm begging you, stop doing this. "(group)DNI!!! I FUCKIN HATE YOU!!! LEAVE!!!!!!!!!!!" is against the terms of service. This is an archival website, not a social media site. Acting like that is childish and makes you look immature and eager to start fights. I repeat: this is NOT a social media site.

❗Also, I saw this fic's author referred to as "OP" multiple times. Don't do that. They aren't the "original poster" they are the author. This website hosts ART, not CONTENT.

For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.

summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.

Examples:

summary: Bruce

summary: "Bruce Banner"

summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk

You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.

The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.

expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.

You can use expected_number_of_chapters: -1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.

otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false

In the AO3 Demographics Survey 2024 - an unofficial demographics survey of 16,131 AO3 users - 71% of respondents were native English speakers, and 57% lived in part of North or Central America.

you know when you read one of the most well written well characterized fics of a character and you’re like “FUCK YES THIS AUTHOR UNDERSTANDS” and then in the notes or in a comment reply they’re like “I hope this wasn’t too ooc I can’t tell 😭” or “I’m glad this wasn’t super ooc I was rlly nervous!” like girl this may as well have been a transcript directly from that character’s head what are you TALKING about

also this isn’t author hate obv I luv you guys I just think it’s funny how this happens a lot. fic writers youre amazing <33

Sometimes i just see ao3 writers act like tumblr users in their tags. NO YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TELL YOUR ENTIRE STORY IN YOUR TAGS THERE IS LITERALLY A PLACE FOR THE DESCRIPTION OF YOUR STORY RIGHT UNDERNEATH?!!??!?!
