Apple soon charging 30% on Patreon subscriptions through iOS

This is the email Patreon creators woke up to today. Patreon is asking us to either raise our prices on the iOS app so that Apple can slurp up 30% of the subscription price, or we can keep our prices as they are and have that 30% come out of our own earnings. Either way, this fee is hidden from potential subscribers so they don't know they're paying 30% to Apple when they could be avoiding that by subscribing on Patreon's website as opposed to the app.

I find this to be a disgusting cash grab on the part of Apple because if they felt like their fees were fair then they would simply tack it on themselves at the point of checkout, not baking it into the prices of creators who had no say in this to make it look like we were the ones asking for more. If you find yourself wondering "Why are Patreon creators all raising their prices?" this is why. Please avoid transactions through iOS apps.

hi tumblr friends, apples here, autistic transmasc system, and i want to ask for some help

i have lived in missouri my whole life. a few years ago i was able to start transitioning, having to stop once i grew out of my insurance plan. this year i was hoping to find an apartment, move out from my family home (that i moved to last year in an emergency), and get back in touch with my HRT clinic so i could try transitioning again. unfortunately -- as of april 27th this year -- i will be unable to even think about transitioning due to the emergency rule put in place by the MO AG. after all, im autistic.

not long after this news hit, i traveled to upstate missouri, and promptly got smacked with a $135 parking ticket for misreading a sign -- they booted my car so i had to spend money i didn't have at the time just to get home. upon getting home, the tire that was booted burst. more money i don't have that needs spent.

i have also missed weeks of work due to a severe upper respiratory infection, and i am struggling in just... every conceivable way.

currently i am surveying what happens once this emergency rule goes into effect in MO. i want to move, yes, but im trying to figure out if moving out of state would be my best bet. i've never made such a big move and it's scary, but i don't want to be alienated in the state i've lived in my whole life.

this is all to say that if you'd like to help a poor trans system figure out where to go from here, while i recover and look at my options:

the dream pin moment today was so special. it was just so incredibly george. you know what i mean??? he loves collecting little trinkets. and he holds so dearly all his dream trinkets: the quartz elephants, the dream dollar.

his eyes instantly landed on the pin. he is so used to looking at that familiar cartoonish smiley face for hours on end he can pick it out from hundreds of pins in a wall. "wait. is that dream??" he asks. he can't believe it. his instant smile. his laughter. of course he finds him everywhere. it's amazing. it's so silly. what are the odds.

ok, now what. he has to get that pin. of course, the stand doesn't accept apple pay. ok. paypal? no. cashapp? it has to be an american account. the atm? isn't working to withdraw cash. ok. that's fine. he walks around. he could just leave! he comes back to the spot. he has to be sure that no one took it! he walks around. hovers. thinks of a solution. comes back to the weird money app. maybe he has it! wait, it WORKS!!!

it's a process, but he doesn't mind. he glances at the pin again, just to be sure. payment complete. $8.80. that's a little overpriced but he doesn't mind. a knockoff dream pin collected in an adventure is valuable. valuable. because every little think that reminds him of dream is so valuable. it's a little piece of the man he loves so so much.

because actions speak louder than words. so he points to the vendor where the pin is. the vendor packs it. it worked! pin acquired. he's happy. it's silly, it was overpriced, the colors are off, it's knockoff merch. but the intention behind it is so unbelievably overwhelming, filled with adoration.

he shows it to his fans. because of course he does. he has to show dream off to the world, to everyone. maybe he'll gift it to dream, though he may not want some silly knockoff merch (as if dream would not be enamoured by it, as long as it was george who gave it to him). so he keeps it. with him everywhere he goes. to his little adventures. it's genuine and it's spontaneous. and actions speak louder than words.
