Is more complicated, or more work to write code for The Game EA Sports FC if you were starting from scratch than it would be to write code for any other large scale game, like an MMORPG also done from scratch? Or GTA6 i.e.? (Licensing issues aside)
Code systems are code systems. Good code architecture tends to follow pretty universal principles, regardless of whether the system is governing loot tables or lighting systems. Constructing software systems is about seeing the general rules at work and using those to write code that adheres to those rules.
It really helps to take a larger view of what a game is from a software engineering perspective. A game (or any major piece of software) is a bunch of systems comprised of smaller subsystems, and how those individual systems interact with each other. All code systems all need to do three things:
Determine when the system needs to do its work
Return the processed results from that internal work to external systems that need those results to do their own work
Do their own internal work to process and handle requests correctly
When planning out what a system will do, it helps to divvy up the work into these three buckets. Once you know what the system needs to do, the engineer can break down the individual functions and data members she'll need in order to actually do that work.
Let's move forward with an example - say that I wanted to build a stealth takedown system in my action adventure game. The design document says that I want the player to be behind an unaware enemy, press a button, and then play a paired animation that kills the enemy. Using the three buckets mentioned previously, let's break it down.
When does the system need to do its work?
Player and enemy position
Player and enemy facing direction
Enemy awareness state
Game controller input state
What results do I need to provide?
I need to know when the player meets the conditions of being behind and facing an unaware enemy (call the UI system to show the button prompt)
I need to call the animation system to play the animations on the player and the enemy (call the animation system to play the animation)
I need to kill the enemy (call the damage system to kill the enemy)
What do I need to do the internal work to provide those results?
I need to calculate whether the player is behind the enemy
I need to calculate whether the player is facing the enemy
I need to determine whether the enemy is aware of the player
I need to know when the player presses the attack button
As each of these elements is built and works, we can use them to interact with each other. Logical checks like whether the player is behind the enemy will determine whether the action can be taken. Actions like performing the takedown animations are then attached to the conditions. These combine to form the rules from the designer and a system is born.

Anti-intellectual/anti-Academia from activists
This post came across my dash and I want everyone to read it.
This rant about Israeli academia is very telling. What I see here is a person who has little to no understanding of research and development. Yes, many of the things that are produced by academics can be used for military purposes. But that mapping software? It's also used to map rivers, lakes, and wetlands. It's used to map out ranges of endangered species and plant populations. It's used for so much more than killing, and the lack of nuance with which this person writes is indicative of the overall anger and hate we see in Western Activists. Many of the research and technologies that will be delayed or halted due to the academic boycott of Israel that this person is cheering will have a global impact. All they can see is the violent application of science and academia, and while it has always been true that science has been exploited by politicians and the military, there is typically a non-violent and civilian application for it as well. I remember back during the pandemic that the Israeli research teams on the cutting edge and giving us rapid results and data to work with. I know of several people in Israel working on alternative animal agriculture feeds to reduce GHG emissions and biowaste. It's also important to note all the tankie buzzwords in this rant. "intellectual architecture for the bureaucratic class" might as well be a neon sign (the blog owner states they should read more Marx and is a communist btw). So we know that anything they say regarding Israel is just going to be full of malice and sprinkled with antisemitic conspiracies, but I'm also getting big anti-intellectualism vibes as well. Ever since the Khmer Rouge there's been a strong undertone of anti-intellectual, anti-academia, and anti-science to the tankie ideology, and I can't help but notice it here. So yes, go ahead and boycott Israeli academics, but it'll have a larger impact than you think, and not in the way you want. The vitriol and hatred people have is absolutely overwhelming and disheartening.

Of all the totally-new brands of cars/trucks out there, I like the looks of the Rivian. There is one here on the Island, and I see it every couple of weeks going somewhere. Totally unique front-end design that (surprise, surprise) doesn't look like an angry japanese anime character. I like the vertical oval headlight design, and the overall body shape/style. It sorta blends in with every other SUV-ish thing on the road when you see it from the back, but those oval LED headlight arrays on the front definitely grab your attention.

Cybertron Architecture After the victory over the Quintessons, the question of the planet's improvement arose. The Quintessons' buildings were small and corresponded to their anatomy, and the Transformers were in barracks. Accordingly, the transformers decided to demolish everything and rebuild the planet. Grapple was appointed as the architect. Even before the uprising, he was an architect-builder (constructicon), but it was after his release that he was appointed chief architect of Iacon
Grapple's style (later called Grapplism) attracted attention with its simplicity, laconicism and asceticism, but at the same time it looked majestic and impressive.
The main features of his style were:
- simple geometric shapes, angularity; - ornaments based on gears, springs, mechanisms, stars, Cybertronian animals;
- materials: metal, concrete;
- flat images without similar images with poster graphics on paintings.
Grapple stopped functioning about 300 cycles before the war. In the last cycles, he suffered a software failure similar to human depression, which is why he committed suicide.

Going down memory lane now! Memories from when I studied abroad in Germany... this was the first time I was exposed to interesting geometries in an architecture class. At the time, I didn't know how to use CAD software, so I couldn't draw a digital 3D cube. My only contribution was glueing well labeled pieces together, but I did not know how to design anything close to these shapes. The third image was from a prior year and I played no role in. Beautiful inspiration though.
When I returned home, I took an architecture class which was my favorite of all time. I learned how to make irregular geometry in Rhino and how to lasercut and build my models which resulted in:
But I was just discovering 3D software so my geometries were chaotic without controlled structure or sometimes even rhyme or reason haha.
This geometry was an evolution towards more structure (the base geometry is regular and the surface tessellation is regular in the sense that every layer is offset by equal amounts rather than random offsets):
At the time, what attracted me to architecture was strange geometry. If I saw an irregular shape that I wasn't immediately sure how to create, I saw it as a technical challenge. The more unsure I was about how to create a geometry, the more fascinating it became to me (see my old tumblr collection of architecture stuffs: https://ecoarch.tumblr.com/)... but this also blinded me to a different approach to architecture which was the beauty in a thoughtful composition made of "simple" geometry.
Architecture by Khoa Vu
This is possibly one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever seen. It doesn't use wild curves or irregular shapes. To technically recreate it from drawings is straightforward. To design it though, I don't think I would be able to.
I do sometimes have tunnel vision... which is if I'm dead set on something I want to make (I'm in my era of weird shapes), then it can be hard to budge me until I feel I have satisfied whichever current urge consumes me... and then suddenly one day a new urge (naked anime characters) emerges and wahoo, off a go into a new direction. I do hope to continue explorations of geometry in the future and to also fuse them with my anime characters... all this is to say... there are many approaches, styles, traditions, dogmas, cultures inside of art... each do play by their own "rules" and I do believe that mastery of the technical objective aspects of a method is important (one can get the anatomy of a body objectively wrong)... but once the objective techniques are mastered, the creative expressive side of "style" is up to the artist to create... if there might be any point to learning the rules of any tradition, it would be to one day write your own "rules"... every movement, modernity, postmodernity, the renaissance, romanticism... they were all invented by someone... ok back to naked anime characters woo
