I wrote a thing for @asuq and she made me post it under a read more. What do you just like embarrassing me in public.
The day Lain realizes she's in love begins like any other- with the sound of her alarm clock going off next to her head and the early morning realization that it's time for another day of school. She slouches out of bed, brushing her teeth and making toast on autopilot, and is out the door in fifteen minutes.
Everything is normal.
She arrives to class on time, arranges her homework on her desk to be handed in, and checks her phone for messages. As usual, there's nothing. Some girls are gathered in clusters around the windows, giggling at boys and paying Lain no mind. The few boys who aren't below in the courtyard trying to attract girls are seated at their desks, resting their heads on their arms or ogling the girls. Lain ignores all of them and opens a book she brought from home, content on reading until class stars.
Everything is normal.
The teacher walks in, and Lain follows the routine of stand-bow-sit before stowing her book away and doodling on the sheet of paper she's supposed to be taking notes on. She does well enough on her homework without having to pay attention to the teacher's lectures. That, she supposes, is not normal, but no one is going to tell her otherwise unless her grades start to slip.
Her eyes lift off the paper and begin to wander the classroom. The teacher's back is turned to the class, and Lain sees several girls texting, each other, their phones tucked under the lip of their desks. The edges of their lips quirk with faintly concealed grins. Lain looks the other way, and a boy is sleeping behind his textbook, propped upright on his desk like a divider.
All of this is normal.
Then Lain turns her head, looking further behind her than she usually looks, and blinks in surprise. A pair of brown eyes meet hers, peering at her curiously from just above the edge of a notebook. As soon as their owner realizes Lain is staring at her, those eyes vanish, having ducked behind the notebook for cover. Lain blinks, intrigued by this development, and turns back to face the front of the classroom.
This is abnormal.
Lain tugs the classroom layout paper out from her binder, where she's saved it since the first day of school. Her finger traces the worn characters, stopping two rows and three desks behind her own. Alice Mizuki, the paper reads, and Lain startles herself with the slow smile spreading across her face. It's a pretty name, she thinks, and shoves the paper back into her binder in her haste to look back at the girl whose name she now knows.
Alice isn't looking back; her notebook is discarded atop her desk, pencil resting in the dip between the pages, looking just like another student bored by the lecture. She doesn't acknowledge Lain- in fact, it appears she hasn't even noticed Lain's unwavering stare. The oddness of the situation makes Lain question herself, and she wonders if perhaps she'd counted wrong and it was one row away instead of two. It's just posturing, though. Lain knows she hasn't miscounted, and Alice must just be trying to pay attention. Yes, that's it.
That would be normal.
Lain resumes drawing idle circles in her notebook, pausing every so often to scribble an important note in the margins. The clock mounted on the wall can't go quickly enough, and when the teacher snaps his bag shut and leaves the classroom, Lain is among the first to leap out of their seats.
When she turns, Alice is already gone from her desk. Disappointment stirring in her chest, Lain glances down at her bag, which tangled around her feet in her haste, and bends down to retrieve her lunch from it. She grabs the small box containing her meal and steps away from the bag straps looped around her feet, and when she straightens up and goes to place her lunch on her desk, something registers as wrong.
There's a lunch already on her desk. Things just get stranger and stranger. Lain tilts her head at the unfamiliar box when someone addresses her. "You're Lain, right?"
Lain nods automatically, only to stop when she realizes who it is that's speaking to her. "Alice Mizuki," she answers, unable to think of anything else to say.
"Just Alice is fine. I... saw that book you were reading before class. Is it good?"
"Yes," Lain says. Alice waits for a moment, like she's expecting Lain to say something in addition to that. The silence stretches on for a long second, and then Alice scratches her head and smiles.
"Oh! Well, I was thinking of getting something to read, that's all. I... did you mind if I sit here for today?"
Lain nods again, and Alice holds up a finger and wanders off in search of a chair to drag over. Lain watches her walk off, following her progress through the room with a quiet intensity. Her heart leaps when Alice finally grabs a chair and, seeing Lain looking at her, shoots her a grin and a quick wave.
This is abnormal. They're classmates, not even friends, and that gesture should not prompt such a reaction.
Even so, Lain is fine with it.

For mamananami
Red. The laser sight was red; the club lights were red; the blood pooling beneath her shoes is red, too. Lain stares down at it with an empty curiosity, watching the sluggish liquid flow around her shoes, staining the edges with a sinister gleam. Alice runs over to her, darting around the creeping blood, and pulls on her arm.
"Lain!" Alice tugs her away from the bodies, her crimson dress blazing fifty-three different shades all at once. Lain blinks, watching Alice's lips move, their sounds strange and unintelligible. Behind them, almost too faint to be heard, are the sounds of life above: the moving of people, the wailing of approaching sirens. Alice can't hear them, but Lain can, as sure as she can feel the life within herself, and the life splattered across her face.
The blood is cold, having had time to dry in the humid air of the nightclub. Lain reaches up to touch it, feeling it crust and crack beneath the gentle prodding of her fingertips. It used to be someone else's- and he had wanted no part of her, so why should she bear a part of him? The blood flakes away slowly under Lain's persistent rubbing, piece by tiny piece.
Mistaking Lain's efforts for discomfort, Alice catches her friend's wrist and guides her further into the nightclub, towards the nearest washroom. "Come on," she says, her voice hushed- the sirens are close enough for her to hear too, now. They dart around the corner, shadows among shadows, and vanish from sight and memory.
The sudden brightness of the washroom makes Alice stop and drop Lain's hand to rub at her eyes. Lain does no such thing- the muzzle flash of the gun has accustomed her eyes, however briefly, to light, and so she stares into the mirror instead. Perhaps it's a trick of her eyes, but her reflection seems to tilt its head and smile- a twisted show of teeth and bared lips that doesn't look anything like what Lain could conjure. She tries anyway, but the bending of her cheeks is too stiff, and her lips can't seem to part far enough.
Alice looks up and catches Lain's grimace. Frowning, she reaches for the paper towels, running the faucets just long enough for them to heat up before soaking the towels beneath them. When she looks back at her companion, Lain is as stoic as ever- her face expressionless once again, staring straight ahead into nothingness.
"Lain, does this bother you?" Alice asks as she rubs away at the blood on Lain's face. The other girl offers nothing, not even a tilting of her head or a movement of her eyes. Alice turns away, busying herself with another towel. This time when she presses it to Lain's cheek, she feels a shiver beneath her hand. "Are you cold?"
Again, there is no response. Alice stifles a sigh as she washes her hands in the sink, her task complete. Steam curls up from the basin, for all appearances warm and inviting. Lain feels none of it. She hasn't felt anything remotely like warmth or cold all night, not during her walk to the nightclub, not even when there was blood splattered across her face. She barely feels Alice's hand wrap tightly around hers again, leading her out- but it's hard to miss the pity in her backward glances.
The pair reappear in the nightclub, their absence never missed, but their presence noticed immediately. Standing next to the dead bodies are several police officers, as well as the club owner, the latter of which immediately points to Lain and Alice as they walk back onto the dance floor. One of the policemen peels off, moving towards them at a brisk pace.
"Were you two here when the shooting happened?" he asks.
"We were," Alice says. "But we didn't have anything to do with it!"
"The owner told us that the shooter spoke to your friend before he shot himself. He even pointed his gun at her. Is that correct?"
"Well- yes, but-"
"If that's the case, we'll have to take you two in to the station for questioning. Just standard procedure," the officer sighs, rubbing his forehead beneath his cap. "You two are still middle-school age, aren't you? You're too young to be out this late. Young people like you shouldn't be getting involved in things like this."
Alice merely shakes her head, shooting a quick glance over at Lain, who's still as blank as ever. "Can't you just take me along?" she offers. "My friend... I think she's in shock right now."
"Sorry, kid. We need both of you there. I'd love to say you two could go, but that's the way things are. Besides, we'll have to call your parents to come pick you up. Come along, now."
To Alice's surprise, Lain steps ahead first, walking slowly across the dance floor towards the exit. She hurries after her friend, the officer following closely behind, speaking quietly into his radio. "Lain," Alice whispers. "Are you feeling better?"
This time, Lain turns her head slightly, her eyes meeting Alice's for a brief moment. Then she turns back, ascending the stairs with mechanical precision, pausing only at the top to wait for the policeman and Alice to catch up.
When they reach the police car, Alice slides in first, scooting over to the far seat, only to move back to the middle when Lain refuses to move in any further. As the engine revs to life, she feels a pressure on her shoulder, and even without looking she knows it's Lain. There's no mistaking the sensation of skin against her arm, of Lain's measured breathing. She raises a hand, and when there is no reaction, rests it atop Lain's head, slowly stroking her hair.
The lights of the city flicker past in rapid succession, playing long shadows across the car seats. Sometimes, Alice will think Lain's looking up at her, but when the next street light falls across her face, Lain hasn't moved at all. For the first time that night, fear pools in her stomach- fear that her friend is angry with her. Facing down an insane gunman is nothing compared to the thought of losing Lain's companionship.
"Hey, Lain? You're... you're not mad at me, are you?" asks Alice.
Silence.
She's about to give up all hope when she feels an almost imperceptible movement against her hand- the shaking of Lain's head. All her worries melt into an immeasurable relief. "That's good," she whispers to herself.
Not another word is spoken, not until they pull up into the station's parking lot, and Alice all but vaults out the far door to race around the back and open the door for Lain, who finally looks up at her and nods her gratitude. Together they follow the policeman into the station, where he directs them to sit on two chairs near the door.
After a brief discussion with the clerk, the policeman returns. "Alright," he says. "We're going to take you in separately and just get some statements. Once that's done, we'll call your parents."
"Do you have to separate us?" Alice cries, grabbing onto Lain's hand with an intensity that surprises even herself. "I don't want to- what if-"
"Look, we just want to get your statements individually to see if they add up, that's all. Everything's going to be okay. We're not suspecting either of you of anything."
The doubt is still present on Alice's face, but she nods anyway, squeezing Lain's hand. "I'll be back as soon as I can," she says, rising to her feet. Lain's fingers slip out of hers and fall limply down to her side. As the policeman retreats down the hall, Alice quickly drops to her knees, brushing her hand against Lain's. "Lain, I'm sorry. I... whatever happens, I'll be here for you. Promise."
Alice's lips touch Lain's cheek- a contact that lasts only a second- and then she's gone, merely a fading echo of footsteps. For the first time since she'd entered the nightclub, Lain raises her head, her empty eyes seeking her friend, and not finding her. "A...lice?" she murmurs, as if unconvinced that her friend has gone. After several seconds, she raises her hand, placing her fingers where Alice had kissed her.
For once- and for this, Lain is grateful- it feels warm.
