Review: Armour of the English Knight 1450-1500
The second installment in Dr. Tobias Capwell’s Armour of the English Knight series, Armour of the English Knight 1450-1500 continues where the previous volume finished, filling the lacuna in the scholarship treating English armor. Published in 2021, Armour of the English Knight 1450-1500 follows much the same formula as Armour of the English Knight 1400-1450. Though the newer work begins with an introduction, it does not provide arguments for the existence of a unique English style or a justification for the use of effigies as source material, electing instead to simply cite the introduction of the first book.
This work is treated as an extension of the previous work, and since the two main parts of Armour of the English Knight 1400-1450 are called Part I: 1400-1430 and Part II: 1430-1450, the sections of Armour of the English Knight 1450-1500 begin with Part III and proceed through parts IV, V, and VI.
In a departure from the formula of the first work, Part III of Armour of the English Knight 1450-1500 begins with a discussion of helmets. In 1400-1450, helmets were treated in each section, however, a change in artistic conventions in the latter half of the 15th century forced the author to change tactics. While in the first half of the century knightly effigies typically depicted the deceased wearing his helmet (with the visor removed), in the latter half of the century it became fashionable to depict the man at arms in armor without his helmet. This shift in artistic convention forced the author to change how he examined helmets in the latter half of 15th century England. Additionally the second half of the 15th century saw a greater number of helmet types used on the English battlefield than during the first half. It was for these reasons that the author relegated helmets to their own section.
Only two types of helmet were present in 1400-1450, namely the bascinet and the great bascinet. Both were relatively simple, close fitting helmets (typically with peaked skulls). The distinguishing factor between the two is the presence of a mail aventail on the bascinet which protects the throat. On the great bascinet, the mail is replaced with plates which provide a great deal of protection at the cost of mobility. In 1450-1500, the bascinet ceased being used entirely and the great bascinet only barely present. Instead, the author focuses his attentions on the sallet and bevor, the armet, and the close-helmet. The mail standard, or collar, is also discussed in this section.
The sallet is a style of helmet which became almost ubiquitous on the continent in the late 15th century. Characterized by a long tail to protect the back of the neck, most sallets only covered the top half of the head, leaving the lower face and jaw exposed even with the visor down. For this reason the sallet was often paired with a bevor by those who desired more protection. The bevor was typically a solid plate formed to the chin and neck which would come down to overlap the breastplate. As the style developed, the lower plate of the bevor was often articulated to add more mobility.
It is thought that the close-helmet developed from the sallet and bevor. The fully developed close-helmet consists of three parts: the skull, which typically encloses the entire head down to the nape of the neck, the visor, and a bevor plate. Unlike the sallet and bevor, however, the bevor plate of the close-helmet is riveted directly to the skull of the helmet (typically at the same point the visor is riveted to) and cannot be removed. Capwell suggests that this construction first came about from smiths combining the sallet and bevor into a single piece to eliminate the problem of the two being able to be separated in combat, a hypothesis supported by the existence of several sallet-style close helmets in various museum collections.
The final type of helmet, the armet, had been in use since the end of the 14th century. An Italian invention, the armet only came to be used in England after 1450. An armet consists of an enclosing skull and two cheek pieces which join at the chin and hinge outwards to allow the head to enter and exit the helmet. Most (though not all) armets had visors, and many included mail aventails to protect the throat.
Given the dearth of headgear on English effigies of 1450-1500, the author had to rely on other sources to analyze helmets of this period. Though no elements of armor survive from this period which can be confidently said to have been made in England, many pieces which were almost certainly used in England survive, primarily in the form of funerary achievements. A common practice in late medieval England was mounting a deceased individual’s armor above his grave. These displays of armor are called funerary achievements. Many of the helmets that survive to this day survive because they were kept and maintained by the church in which they were displayed. In addition to the surviving funerary helmets, Capwell relies extensively on forms of artwork other than effigies. Paintings, tapestries, manuscript marginalia, stained glass, and non-effigial alabaster and wood sculpture are referenced.
The remaining sections of the book mimic the outline of 1400-1450 very closely. Parts IV, V, and VI cover the periods of 1450-1470, 1470-1490, and 1490-1500 respectively. Developments in armor occured rapidly in the second half of the 15th century, which is the reason the author gives for using three sections rather than two. Each part once again relies on effigies to analyze “The Cuirass,” “Pauldrons,” “Vambraces,” “Gauntlets,” “Leg Armour,” and “Sabatons,” supplemented by the source material the author relied on for the analysis of helmets.
The main body of the work is followed by a brief conclusion, bibliographies of secondary sources and of effigies cited, an appendix of effigy name-place concordances, a glossary, and finally an index. The author drew upon scholarship in English, Italian, French, Spanish, German, and Dutch. Much like 1400-1450, and the author makes extensive use of footnotes, which frequently include a substantial amount of additional information.
This book is a worthy addition to the author’s previous discussion on the topic of English armor, and much like the previous book, anyone interested in the topic will find this work an invaluable addition to their library. The simplicity with which the author states and supports his claims combined with the depth and complexity of his analysis of the sources mean this work is valuable to enthusiasts and specialists alike. This reviewer eagerly awaits the publication of the third and final installment of Capwell’s Armour of the English Knight series.

Helmet: A number of variations and modifications to the bascinet are in progress by the early fifteenth century. The stout of the visor is tending to become more rounded or blunted, while plate armour for the neck and shoulders is appearing in several new exploratory forms. One characteristic form of this second trend is the 'aventail of plate', a piece of armour covering the same area as did the mail aventail, but which is composed of a set of hoop-like plates, producing a more rigid defence which yet provides a similar level of mobility.
Cuirass: The one-piece breastplate itself remains largely unchanged, while the plate protection for the back is evolving rapidly. The hinged side-plates which formerly covered only a small area around the kidneys have now been enlarged to form the two halves of a solid structure joining down the centre of the back. The cuirass skirt tends by now to be worn as a seperate armour part, hanging down from a waist-plate underlapping the upper body armour. At the front a triangular skirt extension provides additional protection to the groin.
Spaulders: The shoulder plates remain essentially unchanged, being generally composed of a main plate positioned above either one or two articulation lanes. One important new enhancement takes the form of the besagews, circular or oval plates which significantly increase the amount of front protection for the shoulders, without significantly reducing mobility. The besagews are either attached to the spaulders, by means of a short internal leather, or tied to the mail worn under the plates.
Arm and Leg Defences: A significant variation introduced around 1410 is the substitution of applied disks or 'rondels' in place of integral side-wings. In some cases, the demi-cuisse is omitted, making the poleyn inseparable from the cuisse.
Gauntlets: Unchanged.
Sabatons: A solid heel plate seems to have been introduced by 1410, if not earlier. The metatarsal overplate is sometimes omitted.
Decoration: One notable variation is the inclusion of an engraved border on the outside surface of the upper cannon without a corresponding border on the lower cannon. In these cases a border is sometimes placed around the bottom edge of the lower cannon just above the wrist.

You wake up on a Saturday morning with a pounding headache, your mascara all smudged under your eyes. The sunlight coming from the blinds makes you squint your eyes. You bring a hand to your forehead, sighing. This was the worst hangover you had in a while.
The sound of the door opening and a sudden gasp make you groan and close your eyes shut.
“Oh, here you are!” a particularly high-pitched voice says, making your headache even worse.
“Fuck, Leigh” your voice comes out as croaky and hoarse. “Lower your voice” you ask as she mutters a ‘sorry’ and closes the door carefully. You manage to sit, your back resting against the headboard as Leigh approaches you.
“Next time, be sure to drink water as well. Too many tequilas and shots do this to you” it’s like she’s scolding you, which is fair because she’s two years older than you, she’s like your sister sometimes.
You rub your eyes, smearing more mascara and making you look like a raccoon. On the corner of your eye you notice a glass full of water and some aspirins. You frown.
“How did you get that so fast?” It’s Leigh’s turn to look at you completely puzzled. You point to the glass next to you.
“Uhm, it wasn’t me” she chuckles as you take some aspirins in your hand and drown them with water. Your brows lift in surprise and confusion, your eyes glancing towards a small note next to your lamp. You grab it and read the message in a rushed handwriting.
“What the fuck was Michael Gavey doing in my dorm?” you nearly scream with wide eyes as Leigh takes the note from your hands to read it. She throws her head back and cackles.
“Michael Gavey brought you here last night. You don’t remember?” she looks at your dumbfounded expression trying not to laugh again. “Jeez, you were so drunk you don’t even remember what happened…” she mutters and sits cross-legged in front of you. “Last night at the pub, we were chatting with Felix and his group and you wanted to go to the loo, so you left but on your way you bumped into Bradley and Sam” she wiggles her brows and you scoff.
You dated Bradley during half the second term, then you dated his friend Sam for a brief period of two weeks. You found them too boring, so you rejected any other advance on their part ever since.
“Anyways, I couldn’t see much but I think something nasty happened, because on the other side of the pub was Michael fucking Gavey looking at you. Babe, he was fuming” her lips curve into a devilish smile. “He strode towards you and grabbed your arm, telling them to fuck off. Which they surprisingly did, which is odd because, well… you know… he’s a scrawny awkward nerd and Bradley and Sam are pretty much tall like beasts” she shakes her head while you’re still confused, trying so hard to remember what happened. 
“Why the hell would he even approach me? He hates me” your brows lift and she places a manicured hand on your knee.
“Hmm, maybe they were annoying you. It seems Michael’s your knight in shining armour. I think it was hot, wet my panties a little bit not gonna lie” she sighs and fans her face with her hand, pretending to melt.
Now it is your turn to cackle. “You’ve always said you pictured him like one of those guys who compulsively jerks off to hentai every night in the dark of his room.” You look at her with a knowing look, pouting your lips.
Leigh shrugs. “Maybe I changed my mind. Maybe I like nerds like Michael Gavey now. He looked really good with that shirt” she narrows her eyes and twirls her hair, making you laugh again. She grins and looks at you. “You should talk to him. Ask him what happened, and then you might want to thank him…” she wiggles her eyebrows and you roll your eyes, she slaps your shoulder in response. “You know you want to! I mean, I’ve seen the way you look at him sometimes, and a guy like him will never resist a bomb like you. Who knows, maybe he’s jerking off to the thought of you…”
“Leigh!” you slap her leg and she jumps. You shake your head. “Babe, she hates me. I know it. I’m pretty sure he’s part of that group of guys that slut-shames me in the hallways” Leigh presses her lips, knowing you might be right. Might.
Still, you want to know what really happened last night, so you sigh and get out of bed, Leigh following your movements in the dimly lit dorm. “I’ll take a shower and think about how to talk to him, ask him what happened” your friend gets on her stomach on your bed, her feet up and her chin resting on her palm as you grab your towel, feeling the headache go away, but your empty stomach grumbled.
“Mind if I take a nap here? Kev fucked my brains out last night and I don’t feel like going to my dorm” she sounded quite tired, and you hum in response. She groans as she gets into the covers and you enter the small bathroom, closing the door slowly and undressing to get into the warm shower, letting the water fall all over your body. You close your eyes enjoying the feeling, and you start wondering how to talk to Michael.
You never saw him anywhere else rather than in the great hall of college, as he spent most of the time in the library. Besides, you know deep in your gut he hates you. Every time you walk into the library, he leaves, avoiding looking at you.
One time, you tried to talk to him. It was the beginning of the academic year, you were dating a history student named David, and you saw Michael all alone during lunch, too focused on his books and his crunchies. Feeling bad for him, you grabbed your purse and walked towards him, a smile across your face.
“Hi there” you introduce yourself, extending your hand. He looks up from his book, looking at you with a frown, sneering. He looks at your hand and then back at you. Awkwardly, you move that hand to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear, pressing your lips. “What’s your name?”
“Michael Gavey” he says sharply, clearly annoyed. You stand there, feeling heat creeping on your cheeks as he turns his attention to his book. You open your mouth to say something, but nothing comes out so you leave, returning to your friends.
That was the first and last time you tried to talk to him, but he refused. You didn’t know why, but you assumed it was because of your reputation there. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying your sexuality, and it’s definitely not your fault that most of the guys are horny douchebags who aren’t capable of being in a serious relationship. Plus, they’re too shallow for you, and you get bored easily. You don’t want them to get too attached.
But Michael’s different. He avoids interacting with people when he can, he doesn’t do parties -maybe you saw him once or twice at Felix’s-, he’s very vocal about what he thinks about popular people: he hates them. Vapid cunts, you heard him mutter once. And that’s why you feel attracted to him.
He’s nothing like Bradley, Sam or David. Or Luke. Or Peter. Or even Felix.
You finish showering and drying off your hair, Leigh sleeping soundly on your bed. You are careful not to make any loud noise as you try to dress. You put on a lace tank top and a pair of jeans, your favourite flats and the note he left on your bedside table and head out to the library, hoping to find him.

Bingo. You see Michael sitting on the other side of the library, fully immersed in his studies. Your flats make the slightest of noises against the floor, you feel your heartbeat get faster as you approach him. You pull the chair in front of him and take a seat, leaning over as you smile and say hi. Michael looks up and nearly chokes at the sight of your tits nearly spilling from your top.
“H-hi” he simply responds in a low voice. He clears his throat and frowns. “Why are you here?”
Ouch. Rude. “I was looking for you.”
“You were?” Silly old me?
“Yes, dummy. I woke up with the worst hangover of my life, and I found this on my bedside table.” You hand him the small note he left. Drink these with water. Hope you feel better. Michael Gavey. He presses his lips and nods, acknowledging the note he wrote.
“You were pretty hammered” he chuckles and you smile, showing your perfect teeth.
“I was. I can’t remember a thing, Michael. Would you help me to fill in the blanks?” you ask sweetly and bat your lashes at him, making him squirm. Michael Gavey squirms.
“Sure, uhm…” he puts the book aside, scratches the back of his neck and clears his throat once again. “You were heading towards the toilet at the pub and I heard you laugh when you bumped into those assholes” he sneers, remembering the events from last night. “The blonde one landed a hand on your ass and you tried to pull him away. You were clearly uncomfortable so just told them to fuck off” he shrugs.
Your heart flutters, he sounds so honest and worried about you. You extend your hand to place it on top of his, and he meets your eyes. “Thank you.”
He nods, looking at your hands. He slithers them away, making you frown. “No worries. Next time though, try not to throw up on my sneakers” your eyes widen in surprise and embarrassment.
“Oh fuck, did I do that?” He nods trying to hide a smirk. You cover your face with your hands, mortified. “Shit, I’m so sorry!” You move your hands away from your flushed face when you hear him chuckle.
“You had too many drinks, you could barely stand on your feet” he reassures you, his sudden kindness taking you by surprise. “I left you in your dorm and just when I was about to leave, you said you felt like throwing up, but you didn’t make it to the toilet and threw up on my sneakers. I washed the stain off the floor and helped you get off your shoes to lie down. I see you took the aspirins I left there.”
“I did, thank you again.” You don’t know how to thank him properly, so you start thinking. You take a moment to study his features. The glasses he wears frame his face and hide his blue eyes. His aquiline nose —oh God, his aquiline nose—, the pronounced cupid bow of his lips, his sharp jaw. You feel the need to run your fingers through his tousled blonde hair. You press your legs together. “How can I thank you?”
“No, it’s ok. No worries” he makes a gesture with his hands and sighs. “Uhm, I really need to study, so…” he trails off, subtly telling you to leave. You blink and nod, standing up.
“Sure, ok, I’ll leave you to it…” you accommodate the chair back and wave at him. “See you around?” He just nods and opens his book again. As you leave, a great idea crosses your mind, but before you open your mouth a pack of students enter the library. You curse internally and leave.

9:15 AM.
You fix your hair in the mirror, brushing it before going to the calculus lecture. You’re not studying anything related to maths actually, you’re a psychology student and according to the university program you can take a course to complement your studies, so you chose that one.
As you walk down the corridors, you see Michael carrying his notebook and entering the classroom. Your lips curve into a smile and speed up the pace to catch up.
“Michael!” You call him as you finally reach him. You swear you hear him mutter something under his breath, and you follow him as more students fill the room. He smiles at you with pressed lips, greeting you back.
“I didn’t know you were taking calculus” he sounds genuinely surprised. You decide to take a seat next to him, placing your bag on the floor as he opens his notebook and clicks his pen, everything ready to take notes.
“Yeah, I have to take an optional course to complement my studies” you lean down, giving him a clear view of your cleavage as you reach for your notebook and pencil case. You hear him gulp.
“How… dedicated” he replies, to which you smile, taking the end of your pencil in between your teeth.
Michael looks away, his eyes focusing on the board as the professor greets everyone and starts writing.
Half an hour later the lecture comes to an end. You sigh in relief, your brain has melted from all the numbers and formulas the professor explained. Honestly, you paid more attention to Michael’s large hands and long fingers gripping his pen as he took notes, thinking about how they would feel on your body.
You watch as he stands up quickly, nodding at you as a way to say goodbye. “See ya”
“Michael, wait!” You quickly put your notebook into your bag and rush after him. “Shall we study together? We can do the assignment due by next week together” you offer him your signature smile, tilting your head and thinking he wouldn’t say no. Most guys melted when you smiled at them like that.
However, your confidence vanishes when he grimaces and scratches his neck. “Actually, I… I don’t study in groups. Doesn’t work for me”.
Why are you surprised, it is obvious. You always see him alone in the libraries. You curse yourself internally. “Oh, well…”
“I’m sure you will do great though, you seem like a clever girl” the praise coming from his lips make you silently gasp.
“Yeah, you’re right…” Just as he’s about to leave, an idea pops in your head. “Actually, Michael… I’m struggling with this subject.”
Lies. You aren’t a genius like he is, but you can manage. You don’t like maths but you don’t suck at it either, you do good. Enough to pass the subject.
“I was wondering if you could help me” you do your best to sound helpless, knitting your brows and all. “Everyone says you’re a fucking genius, please, Mike?” He swallows hard at the way you practically beg him for help, placing a hand on his elbow.
He doubts only for a few seconds before agreeing. “Ok. I will help you” he yelps as you wrap your arms around him, your tits flash against his chest making him dizzy.
“Oh, thank you Michael!” you pull back, teeth biting down on your lower lip as you smile. “Can we start today? I would tell you to come to my dorm, but my friend Leigh is currently staying there because they found a rat clogging her toilet.” Another big lie.
Michael just nods, he doesn’t really have too many options. “Fine. Uhm, my dorm is on the second floor, 219. I’ll be there at 4pm, bring your notes and a calculator.”
You playfully salute him, like a good soldier. “Yes, Sir” he chuckles softly and shakes his head, turning on his heels to leave.
You can barely contain your joy as you walk towards your dorm, almost singing.

3:40 PM.
You try on different outfits, grunting when you look at yourself in the mirror for the fifth time. You don’t like any fit, and you continue rummaging through the pile of clothes on your bed. You lift your brow as a red fabric catches your attention. It’s the mini skirt Leigh gave you a few weeks ago. You quickly put it on and look at yourself in the mirror once again, happy with the result. Your white baby tee with ‘cherry bomb’ in red letters written on it makes the perfect match.
You grab your notebook and head towards his dorm.
“Coming” you hear Michael’s voice behind the door. He will surely be coming today. He opens the door, breath hitching at the sight of you in that top, your nipples peeking through the fabric. Suddenly he feels his pants are too tight. “Please, come in” he gives you enough space to enter his dorm, which you do. As you walk past him the smell of your perfume fills his nostrils. Fuck.
You smile at him and as he closes the door behind you, you look around the room. It was just what you expected. Everything was perfectly neat, books organised in two bookshelves, more textbooks and notes scattered over the white desk.
“Take a seat over there” he points at the bed, and you gladly do it. “Do you want something to drink? Eat? I have some crunchies.”
“No, thanks, I’m fine.” You flash him a sweet smile as you open your bag, looking for your notes and your pen.
Michael sits next to you, keeping a safe distance of course, but close enough you can hear his hard breathing. “Ok, we can start with the basics, and then I’ll help you with the exercises, sounds good?” When you nod, he continues. “Cool. So, think of limits as a way to understand what happens to a function as it gets closer and closer to a certain point without actually reaching it.”
“That sounds paradoxical” you cut him off, and he suppresses a smile.
“It does seem counterintuitive, but it's about observing the behaviour of a function as it gets infinitely close to a specific value.” He continues explaining, and you pay attention to every word that comes out from those beautiful lips.

Michael’s brows lift in surprise as you finish another task quickly, and he’s even more surprised when he checks it and there are no mistakes. He didn’t find any mistakes in the previous 5 exercises he provided for you either. You just look up at him, waiting for his correction.
He looks back at you. “You did perfectly well. Again.” You squeak and he takes off his glasses, pinching the bridge of his nose. “I don’t get it. Most students get the first ten exercises horribly wrong, but you solved all of them perfectly. H-how?”
You lean back on your arms, legs crossed. You tilt your head. “Maybe I’m just a quick study, learning from the best” you start moving your feet up his leg, slowly and carefully. He shakes his head as he puts on his glasses again, sighing.
“No. You’re just wasting my time.”
“What?” It’s actually the truth. You are wasting his time, you weren’t having any issues with the subject, you just wanted an excuse. “Ok, yes, I admit it” you lift your hands in defeat, and he curses.
“Why the fuck would you ask for my help if you don’t need it? Fuck, I have many important things to do and you’re here bothering me, leave please.”
You get on your feet quickly as he’s about to turn the doorknob, and you stop him. “No, Michael, please hear me out.” He glares at you, nostrils flaring as you take his wrist and guide him towards his bed, making him sit on the edge. He looks confused, you sit next to him, your knees touching.
“Look, I just wanted to thank you for what you did the other day. For being my knight in shining armour.” He licks his lips and opens his mouth to say something, but you cut him off by placing your index finger there. “No, listen. I know it’s not a big deal for you, but it is for me. Michael, I want you.”
Michael’s eyes widen at your confession. “W-what?”
There’s no way you wanted him. You, out of all the people on the campus. Slowly, you lean in, wetting your lips with your tongue to press them against his mouth. You give him a soft peck before truly kissing him, your hands finding their way towards his tense shoulders. He doesn’t respond yet, but when you bite gently on his lower lip he whimpers, he fucking whimpers, and moves his lips against yours, trying to follow your rhythm. "Yeah, like anyone would ever look at them twice." The second man cackled as if it was the funniest thing in the world for them. Changbin's eyes darken, his fists clenching as he listened to the cruel words directed at you.
"Hey! What do you think you're doing?!" He yelled, his voice trembling with anger but you shook your head, trying to hide your hurt.
"It's okay. Let's just go," You whispered, you didn't want to cause more drama, you just wanted to enjoy your time with Changbin.
"No, it's not okay. They have no right to talk to you like that!" He was angry with them for talking to you that way and even more pissed off that they had bullied you into believing it was okay. There was no way he was going to let this slide.
"Oh, look who's standing up for his partner. How cute." One of them mocked, your stomach twisting as Changbin turned around to stare at them, quickly rising from where he had been sitting and walking in their direction.
"They're not just my partner. They're an amazing person and you have no right to tear them down." The two men seemed to realise they fucked up as they stared at him, your hands clutched onto Changbin's arm trying to get him to leave.
"We were just joking, man, can't they take a joke?" The first one grumbled at him but Changbin blinked at him,
"Jokes are supposed to be funny, do we look like we're laughing to you?" He waited for them to say something but you pulled at his arm,
"Binnie, let's just go...please."
"No, we're not leaving until they apologise." He folded his arms across his chest, the two men scoffed at you both and rolled their eyes.
"Fine. Whatever. We'll leave them alone." One of them grumbled, about to walk away but Changbin grabbed him by the hood of his jacket.
"Apologise." He growled out, and the man's voice trembled as he turned to face you, both of them apologising instantly and scampering off.
"Are you okay?" Changbin asked, his voice turning gentle as he checked on you.
"I will be, thank you for standing up for me." You sniffled a little and he wraps his arms around you. holding you close to him.
HYUNJIN:
"I bought snacks for our movie night, I also made sure to stock up on your favourite hot drink," You told Hyunjin excitedly as you practically bounced up and down in the hallway. The two of you were going to spend all weekend curled up in bed watching movies, finals were over and it was time to relax. 
"Of course, they got the snacks, I bet they're mostly all for them," Someone snickered from behind you, catching the attention of Hyunjin who frowned a little. You beamed at him, trying to get him to ignore the two girls who had been starting on you all week long, you had no idea who they were but they'd decided you were a problem for them.
"It's going to be amazing," You told him as you took his arm in yours, about to pull him away when you heard giggling.
"They think they're all that," One of the girls mocked, snickering at the other girl who was staring at you both.
"Why would he want to be with someone like that anyway? He could have whoever he wanted and he's chosen the trash," Hyunjin's eyes narrowed as he stared at the two girls.

"I have two weeks left, I could have just ignored them forever."

"You never have to face anything alone." He promised you.

"What's going on?" Jisung asked, his voice filled with anger as he stared at you, he could already see how relieved you were to see him.
"Jisung, I.." You were trying to come up with an excuse, something you could say that wouldn't make him hate them since they were his friends.
"We were practising lines for a play," Tessa told him with a sweet smile, her body swaying from side to side to appear more innocent.
"Funny. I thought I heard you mocking Yn for reading their book," He placed the food containers down beside you and kissed the top of your head.

"Is it because the two of you can barely read above a 5th-grade level between you that bothers you? Or that Yn is my partner?" He folded his arms across his chest and your mouth fell open hearing them talk to them the way that they had with you.
"Jisung!" Tessa squealed but he shook his head at them, he wasn't going to let this go on.
"How long has this been going on?" Jisung directed his question at you and you bit your lip.

"If you can't treat my partner with respect I don't see why I should offer you respect back."
"You've known us longer!" Lucy screamed but Jisung shrugged his shoulders.
"Treat people the way you wish to be treated," He mumbled, taking your hand in his and picking up the food with the other before walking away. Checking on you as you both went to find another spot to sit in.
FELIX:
As soon as Felix had gotten the but dial from your phone he was working his way to you, his anger bubbling up more and more as he thought back to what he'd overheard. Two girls were confronting you about something, their voices dripping with malice.
"I think you should pour your drink on them, anything would be an improvement from that outfit." One of them giggled, Felix knew them as Bailey and Chloe, the university's "mean girls" because apparently it didn't end after high school.
"I'm sorry, okay? I didn't know you guys sat here." Your voice shook as you gathered up all your books, trying to move past them but Chloe pushed you back onto the seat.
"Are they addressing us?" She asked snarkily to Bailey who was giggling and undoing the lid to her coffee.
"Ew. Why do you think you could even speak to us?" Bailey asked, your head shaking as you tried to think of something to say.
"What's going on?" Felix asked as he jogged up to all three of you, your body relaxed as soon as you saw him.
"Why don't you go and mind your own business? This doesn't concern you." Bailey hissed at him, Felix ignored them as he pushed past them and checked on you.
"It does when you're harassing my partner." He grumbled at them,
"You're together?" Bailey's voice shook his time as she and Chloe stared at each other in complete shock.
"Did they hurt you?" Felix asked, ignoring them as he pressed a kiss to your cheek.
"We didn't know they were with you." Chloe defended but Felix scoffed at them.
"It shouldn't matter if they were or not! You should treat everyone with some fucking respect!" He grumbled at them, a tense silence washed over everyone as he stared at them, waiting for them to apologise to you but they just blinked at you both.
"Are you going to say sorry or not?" He bit out before they both stared at you,
"We're sorry, Yn. Truly. We didn't know." Bailey stuttered but you bit down on your tongue, Felix was right it shouldn't matter if you were a couple or not for them to start on you.
"Go." He mumbled to them before turning his full attention to you, checking on you as tears ran down your cheeks.
"Thanks for standing up for me, Lix." You breathed out before he pulled you into a comforting embrace.
SEUNGMIN:
Seungmin lingered outside of your last class of the day, the two of you had plans to study after your classes had finished before going to dinner in the night.
"Did you see what Yn was wearing today? They look like they've raided a thrift store." Someone snickered as they left the class,
"Yeah, did you see the state of the shoes too? They're a complete disaster," The two men were so lost in their own conversation that they didn't notice Seungmin grabbing them both by their hoods.
"What did you say?"
"Seungmin! Don't!" You pleaded with him, this was going to be more hassle than it was worth. The two boneheads he was confronting didn't care who you were or who Seungmin was and they would go back to bullying you tomorrow.
"They do this a lot?" Seungmin arched his brow at you and you nodded shyly,

JEONGIN:
Jeongin made his way back to the library with two hot drinks for you both, he'd decided it was time for a short break and a reward for studying together so hard but when he came back he froze in place.

Someone laughed from the table directly in front of yours, he knew the men as Levi and Christian and he instantly wanted to pour the drinks he was holding onto them. They got into the University because they were good and sports and not much else, never studied a day in their lives either.
"Nose buried in their books, they think they're better than everyone else around them," Levi hissed out, Jeongin's heart pounding with fury as he made his way over to stand behind the two losers talking badly about you. But the worst part was that you weren't looking up, as if you were used to the torment they were dishing out. 
"They're too chicken to say anything too," Christian laughed, balling up some paper and throwing it at your head. You glanced up, your eyes widening as you saw your boyfriend standing behind them.
"Awh, is the little baby going to go cry to their boyfriend?" Levi asked before Jeongin placed his hands on both their shoulders, the drink resting on a shelf nearby.
"J-Jeongin?" Levi sputtered out, staring up at him as Jeongin stared down at him.
"Something to say, Levi?" He waited for them to repeat what they had been saying but they shook their heads violently.
"Stange, I could have sworn you were belittling my partner because they have brains." By now the two men were terrified and shaking their heads more, turning to look at you for help but you were laughing into your hands.
"N-No, we were just kidding around, having some fun," Christian mumbled but Jeongin hummed,
"Making fun of someone isn't fun, besides. I'm surprised you two have the intelligence to bully someone, let alone know where the library is." He picked up his drinks again and the two men began apologising profusely in your direction.

Review Armour of the English Knight 1400-1450
Traditionally in the study of medieval plate armor, two styles of plate armor are recognized: the Italian “Milanese” style and the German “Gothic” style. As the vast majority of surviving elements of armor are from these places and belong to these styles, very little attention has been given to armor from the rest of Europe. In writing the Armour of the English Knight series, Dr. Tobias Capwell sought to help fill this lacuna.
Published in 2015, Armour of the English Knight 1400-1450 is the first in a three part series of books by Dr. Capwell published by Thomas del Mar Ltd. The purpose of the series is to chronicle the development of plate armor in England over the course of the 15th century, and to outline what Capwell argues is a uniquely English style of armor designed for a uniquely English style of warfare.
The work is divided into three sections, the first of which is an introduction. The introduction serves to contextualize the author’s arguments as well as to lay the foundations for much of the information presented later in the book. The first several chapters of the introduction provide the author’s arguments for the existence of a uniquely English style of armor, as well as discussing why the English would develop a unique style. In this context, the author discusses the English method of warfare, which, in this period, the author describes as dominated by infantry actions. To summarize the author’s argument, the propensity of the English man at arms to fight on foot necessitated a different style of armor from the continental knights who most typically entered combat on horseback.
The middle chapters of the introduction discuss the quality of English-made armor and the establishment of English workshops, in particular the famous royal workshop at Greenwich. Here the author relies heavily on primary documentation with an emphasis on payment records to armorers (but also letters which mention armor and the writer’s feelings on armor) to illustrate that English armorers were highly regarded and well paid in their native land. 
The final chapters of the introduction focus on martial effigies. As there is no armor from the period of 1400 to 1450 which can reliably be said to have been made in England, mapping the development of English armor becomes challenging. However, England had a rich medieval tradition of the production of alabaster and brass effigies. These effigies were meant to be accurate likenesses of the individual, which they were meant to represent. The deceased person’s relatives could pray before the effigy to help the deceased’s soul pass through purgatory to heaven more quickly. A large number of effigies made for English noblemen depict them in their armor, providing a wealthy artistic resource for this work.
In addition to contextualizing effigies as an artistic tradition, the author provides convincing arguments for the technical accuracy of the armor depicted on effigies, and discusses the problem of dating effigies. It would seem intuitive to date an effigy to the year of its owner’s death, however, this is rarely the case. Many effigies were begun before the depicted person ever died, and many were made years after the individual died. The armor depicted on the effigy is typically of the style that was present at the time of the effigy’s manufacture, rather than at the time of the individual’s death.
The next two sections of the book discuss the details of English plate armor development. Part I covers the period from 1400 to 1430, while Part II discusses 1430 to 1450. Both of these sections are divided into seven chapters, each dedicated to a particular type of armor: “Helmets,” “The Cuirass,” “Spaulders, Besagews, and Pauldrons,” “Vambraces,” “Gauntlets,” “Leg Armour,” and finally “Sabatons.” Each chapter provides a detailed description of the technical elements of the armor it covers as well as a discussion of the technological advancements that take place in the given period.
While the author relies most heavily on primary sources, he does not neglect secondary scholarship, and the works cited in this book’s bibliography include publications in English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian. The author includes a large number of footnotes which not only inform the reader as to the source of the author’s information, but also frequently provide additional commentary. A full bibliography of the effigies cited by the author is included, as well as a separate list of the names of the individuals represented on these effigies, where their effigies are located, and the years they died. A glossary of terms and index are also included. Finally, the author appended an appendix which outlines the process, from beginning to end, he went through to produce an armor in the English style for his own use at jousting tournaments and the insights he gained both from the production process and the use of the armor.
Given the wealth of information this book provides and the pioneering nature of its work, Armour of the English Knight 1400-1450 is an invaluable addition to the library of anyone interested in the study of armor. The author’s direct style and tendency to define technical terms clearly makes this work accessible to even the most novice of interested parties, but the level of analysis and use of sources fits a work worthy of a place on the shelves of the most specialized armor scholars. That this work treads ground that has remained untouched by modern scholarship increases its worth even more.

Here are two pics I commissioned recently, since I wanted to see how Link might look as an immortal dragon 💖 Thank you so much @eethok and @smugcomputer!
This is an AU where Link got his arm back, but Zelda stayed as a dragon at the end. So she wouldn't be alone, Link became a dragon too using Mineru's Secret Stone.
As the Light/Demon Dragons are called the White/Black Dragons in other languages like Japanese, I decided Link should be the Silver Dragon. Maybe his English name could be something like Knight Dragon, because he’s silver like a sword blade, or the Hyrule knight armour he sometimes wore in the past, and due to him mostly flying at the Light Dragon’s side.
I was more involved in brainstorming aspects of the left pic because I only printed one set of refs. Design info under the cut.

Dragon Link retains his hair and eye colour like the Light and Demon Dragons do.
Like Farosh he only has one horn, with ‘damage’ resembling the decayed Master Sword.
He has eight eyelashes like the Demon Dragon (the elemental dragons only have six and the Light Dragon has seven), but with some lashes longer to resemble the Sheikah slate symbol. @eethok suggested the eyelashes be blue like Link’s hair tie, and that’s where the Sheikah slate symbol came in. This symbol is also used on the Purah Pad's screen.
He has a canine-like snout to reference Link’s wolf form from Twilight Princess, and the pink patches are vaguely referencing his pink rabbit form from Link to the Past.
His spikes and other accents are green to represent the Triforce of Courage, since the Light Dragon has blue spikes and the Demon Dragon has red ones. Even though this Link wears blue more, he still gotta be green! I tried to choose a shade like the Tunic of the Wild.
His inner eye colour and sclera might change because I haven't fully decided what they should be yet. The Light Dragon's inner eye colour is green and she has purple sclera
I'm not sure if his spine scales would be blue or silver, since the Light Dragon's are gold like her eyelashes, but the Demon Dragon's are black like his scales.

On February 24th 1303 the Scots, under Simon Fraser and John Comyn beat an English force at The Battle of Roslin.
Now most of my history is self taught that I have picked up over the years, I was brought up near Roslin and my mum did take us there as bairns and told us all about the Chapel, the Apprentice Pillar and The Holy Grail, this was 30 years before Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code novel, so with all that you would think that I will have been told all about The Battle of Roslin?
Nope not a thing, I knew about Stirling Bridge, Bannockburn and Culloden, as well as other battles but I can't recall my mum ever telling me about Roslin, so what I know is all learned over the past 20 years or so.
Fought between the Scots and English during the Wars of Scottish Independence and was a Scottish victory, but it does not figure in many history books and few people up until lately have even heard of it, yet the figures involved, especially on the English side, make it one of the biggest battles ever on Scots soil.
This was during the Wars of Scottish Independence, according to the stories I have read it was more of a fight over the love of a woman rather than a pure Scotland v England "match".
Lady Margaret Ramsay of Dalhousie, who had become betrothed to the handsome Sir Henry St Clair, they of the Knights Templar folk. Enter your typical English arrogant guy in Sir John de Segrave, a seasoned campaigner in many a Scottish battle. Sir John is said to have fallen in love with oor Lady Margaret on may visits to Dalhousie Castle, on hearing of the impending marriage in a fit of jealousy decided he wanted the Lady for himself so sought out to sweep her off her feet and defeat the Scottish army all in one fell swoop.
It's a great tale and sounds like a Hollywood film, but there never was any Lady Margaret Ramsay and we know that Sinclair married one Alicia de Fenton. So that's the romance bit debunked.
What I have also read out about the battle is that Segrove split his army, of 30,000 troops, into three groups, to me this is more believable, well splitting the army, the numbers in my mind will have been a lot less. Anyone who knows the landscape of Roslin Glen will know that it lends itself to the theory that in battle on big force would find it difficult to gather there. The English army in three divisions was also common in armies at the time. The terrain in Roslin in the middle of winter would have made it very difficult for a large army to manouevre, so with that I am pretty sure the numbers have been exaggerated, put it this way, if 30,000 English were defeated at Roslin it would be bigger than Bannockburn.
This brings me to my third point about the battle, why are no accounts of it from people present at it? Well that is easily explained in the fact that one of the commanders of the Scots was John "The Red" Comyn. It's a well know fact that history favours the winners, and we all know that The Bruce and Comyn were bitter rivals so it would be natural for any records of the battle to have been erased by Bruce. Well that's my take on it.
A couple of other details often written about the battle is that William Wallace was present, Wallace by this time had given up the Guardianship and at some point was said to have been in France, when captured he was in possession of a "safe passage" letter from The King of France, so was he there? Again I refer to my local knowledge in that along the River Esk that runs through Roslin Glen, towards Hawthornden Castle is a cave we know as Wallace's Cave, so there is a connection somewhere down the ages with our favourite Scottish patriot.
One as wee story regarding The Battle of Roslin is about the Cistercian Prior Abernethy of Mount Lothian to the west of Balantradoch, the Templar headquarters in Scotland, it was about 5 miles from Roslin, Abernethy, the monk, had been a Templar, a warrior, who had off his armour and lay down his sword to spend the remainder of his life praising God. Now the warrior priest's blood rose again. The life of prayer, compilation of Gregorian chants was abandoned. God had called the Prior to the defence of Scotland. As men prepare for battle each pray to whatever God he knows "let us be victorious."
Monks on horseback were sent to raise the alarm and warn the Scots of the danger facing them, they would have said a prayer for the Scots troops before the battle, as was normal, but another legend is that as the Scottish Army grew tired during the third stage of the battle. Abernethy is said to have been crucial with his local knowledge of the Glen, he also directed the Monks to erect a huge St Andrews Cross on the Pentland Hills, as the Scots tired the Cross was set alight and the Abernethy pointed towards it, saying it was a sign from God, it rallied the troops and the Battle was won.
You will have maybe heard other versions of The Battle of Roslin, a lot of this is my own take and by no means historical.
