Having already said Steve might be a fan of Van Gogh, it occurred to me recently that someone like Steve...

who grew up small and disabled, in Brooklyn,

frequenting the big nightlife hubs (of downtown, Sands St. BK and Coney Island)

who later worked with the kind of showgirls who would've been around in those areas ^

and/or who may have been a commercial artist himself

...would really vibe with someone like Toulouse Lautrec.

He was himself a visibly disabled artist, did commercial art (art nouveau, a style the Nazis hated), embraced queer imagery (in his famous 'bed' series), and was a big fan of working class Parisian showgirls and what Terry Pratchett calls 'Ladies of Negotiable Affection'. 😂

I also think Steve would like the social realism of (husband of Frida Kahlo) Diego Rivera. But particularly the fresco Man at the Crossroads:

Which was originally slated to be installed in the lobby of RCA Rockefeller Center in New York City in 1933.

It was criticised for having 'anti-capitalist propaganda' imagery in it (to which Rivera added a portrait of Lenin, LOL) ...and the Rockefellers decided to have it sabotaged / covered up before it could be finished.

There was a big public protest about this, in the New York art community. Steve would've been 15 at the time, but I imagine he might have participated, and would be delighted to find that the piece had been reproduced by Rivera, and that he still gets to see it in the future.

okay first of all,,, this cracked me tf up picturing this and trying to figure this out. idk nerd steve was easy to picture for me but bully eli?? have u seen him?? baby. twig. eeny weeny. i kept picturing his voice pre puberty transformation and i was thinking how bully??? he’d get beat up for trying to bully anyone lmao. the most reaction he’d get is a raised eyebrow.

that aside i just decided to roll with it, i was thinking about that comment jim made about how he’d get a career in software and become a billionaire and decided he got an early start on it and got an inflated ego from it. slapped a cool fit and some sunnies on him and BOOM, bully eli! i kept him short because short people can be assholes too 😊

as for steve, i think he’d be a literary nerd. in the show he’s pretty passionate and even writes a song for aja for the battle of the bands. i think this au could just expand on that side of him! i also gave him glasses just because it fits the nerd look. his OG outfit honestly translates pretty well so i kept it. i picture him as a tall guy who holds himself like he wants to be small, def the quiet type.

This is so random and purely a ramble for me but like..okay Avengers Assemble Season 1, episode 14 was :chef’s kiss: because it was such a lil domestic vibe episode and I loved it so much! It was so silly! (Shoutout to the Marvel HQ YouTube channel for posting the full episode for free! Hoping it doesn’t get unlisted lol

Spoilers for this episode ahead, long post! Gonna go into semi long detail.

If structure looks wonky, it’s cuz I’m writing on my phone qwq. All photos were screenshotted on my phone from the episode so hope the quality isn’t too bad q__q

Alright so the episode begins with Hawkeye (Clint) making the best sandwich ever!

Then Jarvis interrupts him since woah something in the sky is falling and I guess Clint is the only one who can save it? Anyways, he goes and boom it’s Hulk?!

Turns out, Hulk lost his memory of who he is, how he got there, and who the Avengers are. But he only knows “The world is gonna end!” and boom, stakes set.

Clint takes Hulk back to Avengers tower where Steve and Sam are and the situation is explained. Tony is there too, virtually (“Holo chatting” he says. So like, hologram chatting since obviously the rest of the Avengers can see Tony’s face and vice versa. To me, it’s cool for that to be established qwq)

Anyways the reason for the holo chatting is because on Earth, weird storms are present everywhere (also multitasking king Tony, he was talking and saving a tanker from sinking in intense waves!)

So Tony is working on taking care of the storms while Sam, Clint, and Steve went to try to get back Hulk’s memories!

But the surprising thing is, nobody exactly knows what Hulk does besides smashing.

Oh also, Hulk has a glass figurine collection in his room, which surprises everyone on the team because they correlate Hulk to being an angry, smashing mess so seeing this gentler side of him is surprising!

Clint finds a receipt of where Hulk went to a bowling alley and so the group goes there. And then The Thing (Ben) from the Fantastic Four attacks Hulk! Turns out, during a weekly bowling match (which the team was surprised to learn about), there was an argument if Ben went over the bowling line:

So, a fight broke out and Ben accidentally hit a gas pipe and kabloom! Hulk just left and Ben is upset, claiming it’s “The end’a world!” since that was the only bowling area with big enough shoes for the both of them *sad violin music*

Anyways, the Avengers believed that Hulk was exaggerating about it being the end of the world so they think the job is done buuuut Tony holo chats them and says that the storms are getting insanely worse and that Hulk might be right so more adventure!

So we learn that Hulk left with Spider-Man and cue the Avengers finding him selling hotdogs (lol it’s silly he said “The Avengers? Yes! This is so the end of the world!” while attempting to sell hotdogs. random but stay with me)

Turns out, Spider-Man was passing by and noticed Hulk being sad (about the bowling incident) and invited him to talk it over hotdogs (and he wanted to pay too like that’s so sweet).

However, Hulk’s appetite was very big soo he ate a bunch and then suddenly left Spider-Man, who had to pay for it all lol

And suddenly, Spider-Man points to a rainbow behind them and Hulk jumps in and the Avengers follow (*sad violin sounds* rip Spider-Man he was left alone and still has to pay)

It was a portal to another dimension where they meet Glorion, who is frequently visited by Hulk since he is the one who makes Hulk’s glass figurines.

Here is one of my favorite moments of the episode (you NEED to hear the voice delivery it is HILARIOUS I beg you to hear it!!):

Steve: “There’s a file on him in Avengers Tower. You guys don’t read the files?

Clint: “We got to get you a hobby, Cap.”

Steve: “…reading files is my hobby.”

(The line delivery RAHH WATCH THE EPISODEE!)

Glorion revealed that Thor was there (who we haven’t seen all episode by the way) and Hulk and Thor began fighting. While the Avengers try to ask Hulk where is Thor, Hulk just suddenly throws up o_o

(Gosh I love this show’s facial expressions)

Suddenly a parasite creature is found from the pile of thrown up debris and attacks the Avengers. When Hulk notices the damage they are all causing at Glorion’s place from the fight, he gets upset and just rips apart the creature and then apologizes to Glorion, to the surprise of the Avengers. And Glorion is just excited because he’s a creator of life and Hulk is a destroyer (omg they mentioned that earlier but I like that comparison because they respect each other!)

They are interrupted when Tony is asking about their whereabouts since other dimension and can only get to them through audio and Tony is urgently telling them to return to Avengers Tower.

Hulk brings a severed limb from the creature back to the tower. Once they make it back to Earth, tornadoes and overall sever weather chaos so uh oh

Tony does his genius thing and turns out there is lunar dust on the limb and figures out the dent on Hulk’s face is from Mjölnir, aka Thor’s hammer!

And suddenly Tony reveals to the rest of the team that while he was working on checking seismic activities , Hulk and Thor were fighting as per usual and he got so tired of it, he told them (in his exact words): “You two want to beat each other to a pulp, take it to the moon.”

WHYYY did he not mention this earlier??! I want to say because he was busy with all the severe weather slowly getting worse (valid reason) buuut probably cuz plot buuut it’s whatever qwq

So they all head to the moon and let me just share this hilariously intense screenshot that has no business being funny, considering the stakes:

Anyways so they find the creature, which according to Thor consumes planets. It’s burrowed in the moon and y’know if it destroys the moon, earth is doomed, so even more stakes!

Thor explains that it was Hulk’s idea for Thor to hit him and send him back to earth. Epic epic

Then Hulk seems to be distressed over a shiny thing continuously being smushed and when Sam get flattened (and the shiny thing under him), Hulk rushes to him and he just yeets Sam away it’s hilarious but makes sense once it reveals that it is a glass figurine and HOW did it not break?? I guess it’s made of inter dimensional glass lmao

(sobbing because I reached the 10 picture limit and literally all these screenshots are perfect soo sacrifices (*´Д｀*)

The parasite creature consumes the glass figurine and Hulk goes smash mode and just leaps into its mouth and rips it apart (to the absolute surprise and horror of the rest of the Avengers, who just let him do his thing

And yay Hulk remembers who he is!

The episode ends off with the Avengers, who are exhausted (I mean, dealing with severe weather, interdimensional travel, fighting a parasite creature that could destroy earth, very understated damn) and just in awe that Hulk actually does things besides smashing

Steve looks lost in thought, probably reflecting. Clint is just in awe, Tony also looks pensive, and Sam is tired. End scene!

Idk maybe it’s just me but I love that this episode let the Avengers learn about their own teammate because y’know appearances aren’t everything!

Meant to post this a a while ago. Made this the first time I listened to all of Radio Company’s music/albums. Now I listen to them chronically. There’s something special about country rock (?) that’s both healing and hurting and energizing and honestly I wish they had more music. I will openly admit that it totally started with me listening to Watching Over Me, but now I have to say my favorite song is easily Death to Rights.

I'm cutting in here to say three things--

1. Please, please everyone do yourself a favor and read Mikey's artist Steve headcanon that mentions heavy metal music. As a metal head, it's burned into my fucking brain forever in the best way

2. IS THIS ANON IN MY HEAD? I FUCKING LOVE FRANCIS BACON!

Literally, actually, I can't make this shit up. The first time I encountered his works in an art history textbook and then a subsequent lecture, I literally pestered my professor for 20 minutes after class and then scoped out said professor's office hours to glean even more information about Bacon.

Plus, like a fucking dork, the background of my phone is currently "Painting 1964"

Which I love because, exactly, it's so fucked up and so beautiful yet also if you look into it, it's considered to be a heavily political, anti-fascist painting, even if some parts of that meaning Bacon himself denied while critics conspired previous to as well as after his death.

3. I have no restraint and wish to give examples now that this anon and Mikey have brought to my attention the parallels present. I can not be stopped, lmao.

"Two Figures on a Couch" from 1967

So, first, just. gay. that's what I have to say about this work. It's so gay and incredible. The way the figures blur together? The way they're part of the same being but separate? The way the public would've seen this as so violent and wrong and yet they can't look away because of the sheer quality of the brush strokes and heavy distortion, just trying to piece together what's happening, what does it mean? This 👏🏻 piece 👏🏻 fucks 👏🏻

"Three Studies for George Dyer" 1964

Also very gay and incredible, Bacon created many, many, many studies dedicated to his lover George Dyer before his death, as you can see illustrated by the paintings above.

But, also, after Dyer's suicide in their shared hotel room just days before Fracis Bacon's retrospect (super rare, by the way, that living artists receive lifetime retrospect, much less retrospecs in such an iconic place as) in Paris, France. Works of Dryer after his death including a series with triptych peices (relevant because triptychs, if you don't know, traditionally are saved for religion context, and the fact that they were being used to represent love for another man, by a man? Unheard of!! (at that time, of course)). These are grouped together as 'the black triptychs':

Not a part of the triptychs but a clear experience of grief is, "Self Portrait" from 1971 after his lover's death

The colors in this always strike me alongside the smeared, distorted style, of course, this is a man who doesn't know who he is, where he is, what he's supposed to do without his lover by his side. God, I just love it.

And, begrudgingly, if we have to move on beyond the black triptychs...

Bacon did lots of works of varying popes, including works that seem to be the pope confronting Dyer, but the above is likely his best known. I don't know about you, but I certainly feel the spiritual unrest and the transcendence of time here.

Plus, I absolutely could read all of those action lines as representing the hot searing pain of being transformed by vita-rays accompaning the serum injected into his body all at once? Okay, even the faint bars around the figure in the painting as perhaps an enclosure, maybe an electric chair, or... Howard Stark's machine? Is that too much of a stretch?

Further, those golden lines of paint that make it seem like the pope is enclosed here? Almost like a cage? Those show up throughout Francis Bacon's work. It's been read into beyond stylistic as part of a subconscious experience of Francis Bacon being trapped in a society that did not accept his sexuality and left him feeling isolated and imprisoned by the inescapable expectations, confined and contained, never to escape beyond the mold he was crammed into

...does that sound familiar to anyone?

Also, with all this catholicism-adjacent discussion, is now a good time to mention Francis Bacon was, on top of all the other parallels, born in Ireland, (although he moved to England as a teenager)? 'Cause he was.

"Man in a Cap" 1945

I don't know about you, but this, all I see is a man in a military style cap screaming. But... is he screaming in pain, being obliterated in active warfare, or is he screaming chaotic orders in a flurry of movement for his troops to follow, causing the destruction and agony of others? Is it something else? There's so much to see in all of Bacon's work.

Bacon witnessed the trauma of WWII like others alive at that time, but he didn't serve because he had too severe of asthma--like Steve pre-serum. Although he did volunteer in Civil Defense and worked in Air Raid Precautions. Essentially, he helped fight fires and do search and rescue around London until there was too much dust and rubble from the destruction, and he had to step away.

Another point I feel the need to make is that Francis Bacon destroyed a lot of his own works by setting them on fire. He was a raging perfectionist. He wanted everything to have meaning, and if he couldn't get it right, it wasn't right and he just couldn't have that. Again, does that sound like anyone you might be familiar with?

So, thank you for coming to my TedTalk. Take away: I love Francis Bacon, I love Steve Rogers, and Mikey's anon has made me love them both that much more now.

cuz ok ok ok ok ok i also see steve's work as like,,,, abstract emotion that's also.... definable. not abstract in the sense of colors and shapes, etc, but shadows. sharp, shadowed emotions. blocks of color shrouded by a dark centerpiece. raw emotion etched into fading expressions exacerbated by smudges of flesh and lines of pain. and that seems to be exactly how francis bacon paints his artwork. PLUS hiding his lover in plain sight (something jc leyendecker also did, which is also how i picture steve's artwork when he's doing more commercial projects-- the sharp edges, the attention to detail, the way the men were painted with care that screamed queerness if you read between the lines). but god, the raw pain in bacon's work absolutely echoes the way i imagine steve holing up in his studio. letting the paintbrush etch his heart onto the canvas-- all raw flesh and blood and emotion screaming to get out. shrouded identity in faces that smear into something only half-recognizable as man. it's him, but who is he? who has he always been? a strong sense of justice doesn't necessarily equate to a strong sense of self, and Steve lives that notion plainly through a world who never wanted him to love who he was, just as he was.

Steve had been conned into chaperoning the kids to a ren faire.

Admittedly with very little resistance, but he was keeping that to himself. Once there and with their bags packed away into some apparently theme appropriate tents he had shrugged on some medieval casual clothes and…immediately lost track of all of them,

But a figure he did spot was a long haired Jester entertaining a small entourage with juggling,

Steve finds himself laughing slightly condescendingly at the jingling man. Why do people find juggling so impressive?

He picked it up straight away with some hackey sacks while bored between practices. He’s just good with his hands.

When he looks back up to get another glance in however, the jester isn’t perched on top of his little rock anymore and the crowd has merged with the other dweebs.

Steve stares at the empty space for a moment before a jingle right by his ear spooks him into turning around.

“Art thou not impressed by my amazing skills, your lordship?” The jester asks, swaying on his feet and causing the bells all over him to ping, grin wide and mocking.

And up close Steve notices one very important, very dangerous thing.

This court jester is really fucking hot.

He looks like an idiot, a nerd, a dweeb. Its hard not to in a pointy hat. But he also wore it too well, looked too perfect like that.

Steve notices the…is that..? Yes, the corset wrapping tightly around the mans waist, red and black diamonds decorating the sides and leading to small puffy shorts. His legs are covered in tight black leggings which should look ridiculous. It should.

An obnoxious cough and head tilt-jingle make Steve aware that he has been staring at the mans waist for way longer than was ‘bro code permitted’

He looks up with a wince, expecting a look of disgust ranging from mild embarrassment to punch-your-lights-out.

He was, instead, greeted by a smug and knowing smile. The red and black triangles painted over the mans eyes warped where the grin reached them. “Or maybe thou art impressed, but skills are not what draw thine eyes.”

Shit. Fuck. The stupid hot nerd is using stupid nerd speak on him. And Steves stupid nerd, apparently ‘very accurate’ pants are getting tighter. He needs to say something. Anything.

“You’ve got…bells.” Okay, maybe not anything. He used to be better at this shit.

He is rewarded with a wild, joyous laugh as the jester throws his head from side to side. “I do! Isn’t it amazing?The staff insisted on it so they could hear me coming.”

“It certainly makes an impression-“

“Eddie, names Eddie. And what does my lordship go by?”

“Steve is fine.”

“That he is…” The comment was punctuated by a less than subtle glance, almost a leer. “However, Fine Steve seems unimpressed with my merrymaking. As the official court jester, I cannot let that stand.” He stamps his foot, causing another cacophony of jingles.” “Therefore…”

“…Pick a card any card!” A pack of standard cards was presented to him with a flourish, but all he could do was roll his eyes.

“Come on, really? This shit is basic. All I have to do it watch your hands. You’ll swipe my card out and put it back in later, or mark it somehow.”

“Ooo his highness has it all figured out doesn’t he. Well then, princess, you have nothing to lose by picking a card, do you?” And that was…true. Plus he could maybe try to fix his previous fumble and try to claw a number out of this disaster.

So with another bitchy roll of his eyes, Steve plucks a card from the deck and hides it behind his palm. Two of Hearts.

Then out of nowhere… “You know, Stevie, if you think I’m pretty you can just tell me. I know the kingdom would approve not of a noble like yourself marrying a commoner like me, but they need know little of how we…” He begins to reshuffle the cards, motioning for Steve to place his chosen one back in before making some very obvious, very crude movements with his fingers. “…get to know each other in the meantime.”

He was going to die. In the middle of a nerd fest.

“Well, my lord…” Eddie continues, circling him while dragging a finger across his arms and shoulder blades before coming to a stop in front of him. A very bold hand takes Steves jaw and forces his head up, pretending to inspect something on his costume for any bystanders.

“If you would like some more…close up demonstrations…” He leans in tightly, still holding Steve’s jaw in a tight grip. “You can pay me a visit in staff cabin 23 tonight.” He strokes a piece of hair gently behind Steve’s ear before pulling out a card, as if from said ear.

Steve was glad that Eddie took the initiative to carefully pull his hand up and place the card into his palm, because currently Steve was too preoccupied with staring like a fish out of water into Eddies eyes. Everything about him was just so captivating, so alive.

Maybe that’s why he did little more than step forward aimlessly, with small grabby hands when Eddie pulled away. Before Steve could even process it, the bells and jingles had mingled back into the crowd. But that was…that was okay. Cause he could go to the…cabin?

But how was he supposed to- Oh. He looks down. On the card was a loosely clipped room key with a ‘23’ crudely engraved into the edge as if by a pocket knife.

The card itself, to his horror, was the Two of Hearts.

Shit.

He forgot to watch the fucking hands.
