1. Why do you write fanfic?

Sometimes I need to get an idea out of my head, sometimes I need to get an idea down on the page, sometimes I want to write for the sake of writing.

(The REAL real reason why I write fanfic instead of original fic is so that I don't have to come up with names and physical descriptions for a bunch of different characters. *shoves all-oc wip back under the floorboards*)

2. Which of your posted stories do you think about the most, even though the story is “finished”?

For now it's Change the World. That one was a lot of fun. I re-read it loads because it makes me laugh.

3. If you could give yourself fic advice from when you first started writing fic, what would that advice be?

You don't know English yet, but once you start learning: on eff eff dot net, cock means penis, not rooster. No advice on the writing, your Gerudo self-insert Mary Sue is already perfect. 💚

4. What’s your relationship to fic stats?

I don't care at all, unless I'm being sulky. I like to think that getting it out of my system relatively quietly makes me the charming ray of sunshine that you, kind and radiant reader, knows and loves. 😁

5. Is there a pairing or scenario or friendship you miss writing? If so, why? If not, why not?

I miss Joseph/Hemmer, that was fun to write. I couldn't stick the fix-it part of the fix-it fic, so I abandoned it in my wips, but I like coming back to it and rereading the more coherent scraps.

6. What motivates you to write?

Mostly jokes! My latest, Life, When It Gives You Lemons, is based on that genius Darmok and Salad at Tanagra pun.

(That's probably the reason why nothing ever came of my Joseph/Hemmer or Una prison break fics: there's enough dead kids and dead parents in SNW to stop me laughing.)

What motivates me for my current WIP is mostly "Can I do this?". The answer so far seems to be yes, provided I can string enough jokes together.

7. Why do you write for the fandom(s) that you write for?

For Star Trek it's mostly friends (hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, hi! 👋🖖), for LotR it's because somehow, there's still not all the stories I want to read out there, and for 40k it's my desire to throw war dollies around without ever having to memorize a different codex every time I blink.

8. If you’re stuck writing a WIP, what do you do?

I give up and add it to my ~private library~ or I ask for help. The bragging rights of producing something of AO3 quality makes editing worth the hassle. That's my hoard, that is. 🐲

9. What do you wish people knew about comments?

I'm really bad at answering them, so if you, smart and elegant reader, want a reply, trick me into a conversation by asking me questions!

If I don't reply that means your comments ended up as a coal on the warm cozy fire in my heart that's keeping the "Not A Talentless Hack" feelings at bay and I never figured out how to adequately repay that kindness. Thank you. 💚

10. Maybe there’s a question you wish had been on here. What’s that question (and answer)?

I couldn't think of any since getting tagged, so in the interest of finally answering the other nine questions: No, but thank you for asking!

Y'all really had me believing that Marvel ruins the work of perfectly good directors, huh? Bullshit. Ryan Coogler has shown twice that when you're creative, smart, and respect your source material you will consistently make beautiful, fun, thoughtful, and funny movies.

As always, I applaud you Ryan Coogler for being one of the only decent creators in Marvel.

Chris Hemsworth, please, honestly GO FUCK YOURSELF. LMAO.

Okay, so, listen, this is honestly going to be the last I ever talk about this, but the fact that I've been proven right about this jackasses involvement in this whole affair has got me laughing!

In 2017, or the year previous, who the fuck knows, Chris Hemsworth got his friend, Taika Waititi to direct Thor 3. Thor Ragnarok, which heavily diverged from the cinematography and the lore of the previous two Thor movies. Chris Hemsworth decided Thor was too boring. He didn't like playing him anymore. He wanted to play someone new and fun. He wanted to play himself. And he got just that.

I'll give Ragnarok enough credit, that aye, I might be fooled into thinking there was some interest the title character. But after Love and Thunder? No, now I know I've been fooled into watching a costume party by Chris Hemsworth, his family, and his friends. Ding ding ding! What do we have here, Johnny?

A bottom tier celebrity making a franchise that not only was all about him - his character, but all about him!!! He's playing himself!

His daughter at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder, is his daughter in real life (she's cute, no diss). His two sons played younger versions of him. His wife was a wolf woman he made out with! His best friends Matt fucking Damon and Taika Waititi both star in the role and the latter directs it.

I'm sorry, but at what fucking point did I sign up for a lazy written fanfiction? Because that's sure as hell not what I thought would happen in Thor 1 or 2, or Avengers. And you know, I am still mad, because I enjoyed the OG Thor, I enjoyed the OG Loki, and Marvel and, wow, did it not pay off.

Alas, it's on me for watching any new Thor films (aye, listen, I gotta family here!), but I just wanted to tell anyone who ever said Thor is a walking self insert nowadays. You are completely and utterly spot on.

i think the thing that really draws me to ks is that thing that old fics used to do all the time but i don't seen as much anymore, where they both care for the enterprise above all, they both love space so much, it's like a hyperfixation. how instead of that fixation making your partner resent you for "caring more" about that thing than about them, for taking up so much of your time and your mental space and energy, they instead share that love with you and instead of pushing you apart it's what brings you closer together. i just love that for them, i think it's so sweet and it works so well with their characters

and how, after all those years being together, kirk doesn't even hesitate to give up the enterprise for spock, because even though once upon a time they would have sacrificed each other for the ship and crew, now they're each other's whole universe, and their love is the most important thing. i am so soft

What we've got to remember Is that everyone saying "that's not my Captain Kirk!" Is actually right.

That's not our Kirk.

This is a Jim having never met several vital crew members and friends.

This is a Jim who doesn't have the Enterprise but the Farragut (which you'll remember lost a large part of it's crew in which Jim feels unnecessarily responsible).

This is a Jim who's brother is not married with children in space (and about to die but we don't talk about that) but serving on the Enterprise.

This is a Jim who is living in a different timeline with different experiences and different people (I mean just taking Spock away and there goes half his character imo).

So you're right. That's not our Jimmy.

But it's a start. It's an idea. It's who he could have become had a few things changed.

That might not be our Captain Kirk but that's okay for now.

People who leave negative comments on Fics... Like why lol.

I genuinely don't understand.

It's like I invite you over for sandwiches and say "Oh hi friend! Which sandwich would you like?"

And you go "SANDWICHES??? You're going to serve me a SANDWICH?! How could you subject me to this?!"

"Well... I invited you over for sandwiches so I assumed you wanted one-"

"That's it! I'm done! I'm leaving and never coming back! I can't beleive- I can't beleive- that the sign on your front door that said 'warning: sandwiches served inside' meant that you would actually OFFER ME ONE! Your sandwiches are trash and disgrace to food! I'm never coming here again!!!!"

And I just stare at you leave wondering why you accepted the invitation to my sandwich shop that is clearly marked sandwiches and the invitation clearly stated sandwiches. And if you walked into the wrong place next time just turn around and walk out bc the pizza place is next door and mistakes happen!

Just don't... Yell at me and trash my sandwich shop because you ignored the signs and wanted pizza.

I’m kinda bored, anybody got questions about Vulcans? I’ve got a hankering for another lore dive but it needs direction!

Hey again, I was just curious if you’ve written any other Bones-centric fanfic or know any really good ones??

Hey! Thanks again! :)

So I’m very new to writing for Star Trek but I will say you’re in luck because Bones is exclusively my viewpoint character so far, LOL. I’m also participating in the Leonard McCoy Bingo Challenge (which is open-ended and still ongoing!) at @leonardmccoybingo, so I’ll be writing lots more of him in the future. I am primarily focusing on McKirk but I’m also feeling my way towards exploring his relationships with other crew members, so there’ll be that as well!

My other three fics (all one-shots and short; that I wrote multichapter was a surprise to even me):

absolution, my first published fic, which was a brief thing to start exploring Jim and Bones’ shared grief over their fathers.

but we just haven’t mastered the fall, my first bingo fill. Lightly McKirk but they’re still platonic. Bones has a trauma-related nightmare and they parse through it together.

curiouser and curiouser. Platonic Spones where Spock gives Bones advice on parenting when he and Jocelyn have a conflict over Joanna’s education.

I know you mentioned having a hard time with McKirk, but I will say that I definitely would not be where I am had it not been for my reading some excellent writers for the pairing. I’ve found that Bones is pretty often the viewpoint character in McKirk fics because Jim is the more interesting character to look at as an observer, so a bunch of the writers I’ve read do a great job at doing that while also exploring parts of Bones’ psychology in really cool ways. I hope if you give some of these a try you’ll like them! I’m also pretty new to being an active reader, so I don’t have as many recs as I’d like, but I can also rec some I know come highly recommended by my friends that have a strong focus!

Switch by Ceres_Libera (slowburn McKirk with a heavy focus on Bones’ inner life, his relationship to his sexuality, and family)

palimpsest and smoke in every lane by fireinmywoods. Bones is the viewpoint character for both and I feel all her work really does him such justice. palimpsest has him trying to figure out a medical mystery on a diplomatic mission, and smoke in every lane explores him dealing with grief.

i’m not fully through it but I’ve been really enjoying All the King’s Men by Mijan. Bones finds out about Tarsus IV when Jim has a severe trauma response during a training simulation. There are some great scenes between Bones and Pike and I like anything that has Bones smart enough to really put the pieces of Jim’s past together.

I love what my friend tinybowties does with aromantic asexual Bones.

I am really looking forward to reading this Betazoid Bones ‘verse by espressohno!

I hope these help scratch the itch! :) I’m always on the lookout for good Bones-centric fic.

Okay, so I’m calling upon the expertise of @ichayalovesyou on my Vulcan-related theory- and please tell me if I’m WAY wrong. So I was thinking about how in All Our Yesterdays (3x23) of Star Trek, Spock travels back to a pre-Surak time for Vulcans and begins acting like a pre-Surak Vulcan. He’s possessive, more violent, more primal. That doesn’t make sense on the surface because he clearly remembers who he is and who McCoy is, and it’s not like McCoy is suddenly acting like a caveman. So, he remembers how he was raised, and he remembers being raised with logic. 

Now the show wants you to think that this is just another aspect of Vulcans- they’re a telepathic species; therefore, when Spock goes back in time, his mind is impacted by the telepathic thoughts and idk... vibes of the other Vulcan minds. They’re violent, primal, and possessive, so he is violent, primal, and possessive. And this is SO interesting. 

I think it explains why they’re all so low-key xenophobic in the modern Trek timeline and why they’re so intent that people control their emotions; I believe it even explains why they’re so wary of Spock himself. If it is true that Vulcans are deeply impacted by the general psychic energy/thoughts of all other Vulcans, then basically every Vulcan needs to be on the same page re: logic. There might be room for a few stragglers here and there, but if a third, or maybe even less of the overall population, does not control their emotions or views emotions differently, that will impact how every other Vulcan functions and thinks.  

Now in the AOS timeline, I think this could get REALLY interesting because there are only 10,000 of them left. That means each individual mind and person is going to have a vast, disproportionate impact on the vibe check of Vulcans. Especially if, for centuries, they’ve been used to having billions of minds to balance each individual person. 

On a more comical level, it might mean that they all become REALLY close- to the point where Spock might be chilling on the bridge and he’s like “oh, huh, I think a Vulcan just had a really really great orgasm two-star systems away” but it also obviously has insane implications where, in the wake of this absolutely terrible tragedy, they all need to be even more controlled which seems like a pretty big ask. So what if it starts deteriorating? Hmm.... (there is a fic here)

Yo, like, I’ve gotten enough out of a serious bout of depression to wanna actually like, write and draw and stuff, if y’all are curious about my OCs and/or my story setting or my stories feel free to ask cuz like wrote best when asked to ramble by real humans. It’s called Down To Earth

It’s a sci-fi fantasy where the magic system is based around music (mainly singing, but dancing, writing music, painting/sculpting influenced by music, listening very careful to music etc.)

My main character, Isaac, is deaf, his magic is based around Clairvoyance. He has synesthesia that creates visions of the past and future through sensing vibrations (I did a lot of research and, in most cases, people who can’t “hear” can still sense vibrations and balance/equilibrium, and the brain can be hardwired to “hear” music because of aforementioned vibrations). I have ten main characters total.

The peoples/races in my story are called Beastfolk, based off of a bunch of different folkloric half-beasts. While there are more, the ones that are primarily represented in my story are Harpies (Isaac is one), Minotaurs, Satyrs (goat horned), Centaurs, Faun (deer horned), Sphinxes, Remus (wolf/dog folk, kitsune), Meekses (mouse/rodentfolk) and Pixies. The story also features androids called Ancient Machines, and crashed/grounded kaiju sized sentient bio ships called The Great Machinators (most of them are no longer alive though).

It’s a combination of punks with a little high-fantasy, each faction embodies a different punk. The Island of Flight is solarpunk, The Antlerwood is biopunk, Scrap’s Canyon and the free township of Barrel’s End are steampunk, the Badlands are post-apocalyptic dieselpunk. The Empire of Blight is cyberpunk.

The themes are pro-environmrntalism, anti-capitalism, all of my main characters are at least one of the following: POC, LGBT+ and/or disabled, most are a combination of the three. They’re all teenagers (13-18 years old), the genre/maturity level is YA but definitely on the dark dystopian side (think maze runner/hunger games). I wanted the primary idea being the heroes that overturn the systems of oppression being the marginalized members of those who will carry our future.

There’s more to tell but I’m not sure how to express it unprompted. Maybe I’ll do a low -down on the MCs soon.

You’re welcome Anon! I feel like it’s one of those “people are saying it’s bad so it must be bad” situations, even when they haven’t watched it. It seems to be a very old opinion, like people said it as a gut reaction in 2005 and never stopped. Plus like, bruh, EVERY Star Trek is “bad” and has ppl that think it’s bad or worse “not real Star Trek” whatever the fuq that means 🙄🙄🙄 I mean, there are parts of EVERY trek that are annoying, but every Star Trek has redeeming qualities, and we love it regardless! I’m not saying everyone has to love all Star Trek, god knows I HATE JJ Abrams Trek, but I don’t hate the Kelvin Timeline cold turkey (Beyond is wonderful! And the AOS movies brought in tons of new Trekkies, it totally revitalized the fandom and I’m grateful for that). There are even some things that get hate about Enterprise that I actually REALLY like, I love the worldbuilding they’re doing for the founding races of the Federation (especially Vulcans!!!!) & I genuinely really like Johnathan Archer! So yeah!

Hey so from your blog I understand you are neurodivergent? Correct me if I'm wrong. If you are, sometimes I wonder if I have Asperger's Syndrome. When I look back on my childhood there are some questionable aspects that I got over, I think, but with a lot of effort. For example I used to watch the same movie over and over again till I had big chunks of it memorized and I played it in my head when I went to sleep? And I was obsessed with puzzles, I did and redid them many times. And lots of repetitive things. Also I don't know if I was just being sensitive or something, but I always cried at the tiniest disapproval of adults.

I'm sorry if this comes off as stereotypical, but those are things my peers found weird and not actually "normal" and it was pretty hard for me to get over them.

Lol I don't even know where this is going, I guess I'd like to see some insights from a neurodivergent person, because I've never had the chance to interact with one. How did you figure out you were neurodivergent? Can a person on the autism spectrum learn to communicate effectively with other people on their own? (because I think I can do that, but it's not always a pleasure haha).

Feel free not to respond to this, I don't want to bother, but you seem..... Approachable😂. I'm not one of those people who self-diagnose through an internet quiz and try to make themselves appear special....You know the ones. I'm genuinely curious haha. I'm probably fine, it would still be interesting to see your response. Thanks.

I’m going to be perfectly real with you

I do not have an official diagnosis for anything aside from “generalized anxiety” but I only got the chance (until very recently) to get therapy for a year.

But I do feel like there’s a difference between wanting to feel “special” and going into self-diagnosis territory half-cocked. And looking at your life, tallying up the evidence, making an educated guess, and then making an effort on finding out whether or not you’re guess is correct from a professional.

For instance, in my case (I’m about to get into “tragic” backstory stuff just to give a clear picture):

I come from an emotionally abusive situation in which, even when I had teachers, pediatricians or other moms suggest I (at the very least) had ADHD my mother got offended, denied it and insisted I was fine. In fact, the only way in which she has treated my as any sort of neurodivergent is the “generalized anxiety” diagnosis I got from the six months of therapy I got 7 years ago. Even then she uses it as a tool to invalidate my feelings. She never considered it may be a symptom rather than a source until my baby brother got diagnosed with autism.

My family has a loooooong history of autism/adhd and other mental illnesses, all of my siblings and cousins above the age of 3 have one or both, I also wouldn’t be surprised if my father has autism and my mother has ADHD even if they went undiagnosed from the same stigma that kept my mother from getting me help (and only getting my younger sibling help when essentially forced by the school system.)

It was only really when my brother exhibited behaviors and got an autism diagnosis (and my mother and I started reading up on the topic) that I realized just how many of my behaviors were associated with textbook autism. I looked at my baby brother and I saw myself, the biggest difference between us is that I was hyper verbal (talking a bit before 18 months) and he was totally nonverbal until he was almost three (both of which, are symptoms of autism) that I really considered the possibility. Even my mother suggested I may be right, better late then never I guess.

I exhibit many of the exact behaviors you describe that are associated with both adhd and autism, I lined up toys, I drew the same picture on one sheet over and over. I take comfort in compulsively watching movies and shows over and over, I (for lack of a better words) stim sing and use movie quotes and references as eccholalia as stress relievers (especially in new social situations). I cried at the drop of a hat, when I was angry I’d repeatedly hurt myself by banging my head and arms against the myself or walls. I also do the “happy flappy arms” when I’m excited or nervous, I have a special interest in writing and making music (I have a hard time thinking about pretty much anything else). I had lots of trouble socially until about high school and none of my friends are neurotypical (or straight lol). So, I think it’s safe to say that I am either on the spectrum, have ADHD (which exhibits a lot of similar symptoms).

When I found this out, I started treating myself like I had these things instead of beating myself up for being “weird” and my mental health improved significantly. Mind you, it’s still not great because I am not (yet) in therapy and live in an overcrowded, emotionally abusive household, but I am making concerted efforts to remedy both. I’ve got my first therapy session in almost a decade arranged for next week and plan on moving in with another, less crowded, less abusive parent.

The best thing I can suggest is, read up on what you think you may have, look at the symptoms, compare them to you’re own, write it down, write how you feel about it. But more importantly read other people’s experiences with autism and ADHD, while medical professionals can help you get access to diagnosis and (if you need it) medication, sometimes the personal aspects get lost in the machine. At the same time of course be careful who you listen to, there are a lot of organizations and people out there who want to “help” by trying to force us to act “normal”, acting neurotypical does NOT equal living to enjoying your life to its fullest potential. On the flipside there of course people out there with and without diagnosis that will promote unhealthy thinking patterns and coping mechanisms, you’ve got to think critically and decide what is best for you.

Not all of us can get therapy, not all of us will get diagnosed even if we do, especially if you’re AFAB and have autism, or if you’re “well behaved” (ie pass as neurotypical) we slip through the cracks all the time. Try to get therapy anyway, a diagnosis can be really helpful (but in the case of autism it can also be detrimental because of the sheer amount of ableism around it, again, read other people’s experiences).

It’s okay to act on the idea that something is wrong, you know when something isn’t right with you, not even your parents can define that for you (I learned that the hard way). As long as you don’t wallow in it, operating under the assumption you have autism and/or adhd, using the tried and true coping mechanisms, being gentle with yourself, can be very, very helpful.
