It's been a while since I uploaded new art, so here's another one of the designs saved up for my in-progress merch store. It's the classic Three Wolf Moon shirt, with an icthyological twist featuring some of my favorite sea creatures--the adorably ugly wolf eel.

For this prompt I drew the Atlantic wolffish (Anarhichas lupus), which despite the name also inhabits the Arctic Ocean. They have just the cutest face!!!!

The Atlantic wolffish (Anarhichas lupus), also known as the seawolf, Atlantic catfish, ocean catfish, devil fish, wolf eel, woof or sea cat, is a marine fish of the wolffish family Anarhichadidae, which is native throughout the North Atlantic Ocean with the densest populations being occurring at Georges Bank, the Gulf of Maine, the Irish Sea, Denmark Strait, and White Sea. As a benthic dwelling cold water species, the Atlantic wolffish are primarily stationary fish which primarily inhabit sea floor nooks and caves around 66 to 1,640ft (20 to 500m) in depth. They prefer  temperatures of −1 to 11 °C (30–52 °F). To survive such cold temperatures there blood contains a natural antifreeze. Atlantic wolfish are uniquely adapted to use their strong jaws to crush and crack open the shells of molluscs, crustaceans, and echinoderms, and are a vital predator of sea urchins, green crabs, and starfish. Reaching up to 5ft (1.5m) in length and 40lbs (18kg) in weight, The Atlantic wolffish has retained the bodily form and general external characteristics of small blennies albeit just on a much larger scale. Its body is long, subcylindrical in front, compressed in the caudal portion, smooth and slippery, the rudimentary scales being embedded and almost hidden in the skin. Atlantic wolffish vary in color, usually seen as purplish-brown, a dull olive green, or blueish gray. An even dorsal fin extends the whole length of the back, and a similar fin from the vent to the caudal fin, as in blennies. The pectorals are large and rounded and the pelvic fins are entirely absent. Its obtuse, eel-like body type makes the fish swim slowly, undulating from side to side, like an eel.The Atlantic wolffish's distinguishing feature, from which it gets its common name, is its extensive teeth structure with Both the lower and upper jaws are armed with four to six fang-like, strong, conical teeth. Unlike most fish, Altantic wolffish perform internal fertilization and form close mated pairs in which both parents care for and guard there nest of eggs which they build out of sea weed and stones. After hatching the young will stay with there parents for up to four months, until they are strong enough to gain independence. Under ideal conditions an atlantic wolffish may reach sexual maturity at around 6 years of age and may live upwards of 20.

Wet Beast Wednesday: moray eels

This week on Wet Beast Wednesday I'll be going over something amazing, a fish with a sense of morality. You see, the moral eel is known for, what... I think I'm reading this wrong. Oh, MoRAY eel, not moral. Well this is awkward. Hang tight, I need to go redo my research.

Moray eels are true eels, meaning they are in the order Anguiliformes. Yeah, I did wolf eels, electric eels, and lamprey eels before I got around to actual eels. There are over 200 known species of moray eel in 15 genera. Like other eels, they are elongated bony fish with extra vertebrae and reduced fins. Moray eels have fewer fins than most eel species, only having a dorsal, anal and tail fin that merge together and run down the back of most of the body and underneath portion of it. They achieve motion by undulating this long fin and sometimes undulating the rest of the body as well. Moray eels aren't the fastest of fish, but they can swim backwards, something almost no fish can. The head has a long snout with wide jaws. Most species have long fangs used to grab onto prey, but a few species are adapted to eat hard-shelled prey and have molar-like teeth to crush through shells instead. Probably the coolest feature of morays are the pharyngeal jaws. This is a second set of jaws located in the back of the mouth. When the eel bites onto prey, the jaws can be shot forward to grab the food and help pull it into the throat. While lots of fish have pharyngeal jaws, morays are the only ones who can extend their pharyngeal jaws forward and use them to grab prey. Morays have smooth, scaleless skin that is often patterned to provide camouflage. The skin is coated in mucus that provides protection from damage and infection. In some species, the mucus can be used to glue sand together to help reinforce burrows. Morays lack lateral lines, a system of organs found in most fish that senses changes in water movement. Their sense of smell is their primary sense. The size of morays varies between species. The smallest species is the dwarf moray eel (Gymnothorax melatremus) which reaches 26 cm (10 in) long. The largest species by mass is the giant moray eel (Gymnothorax javanicus) which can reach 3 meters (10 ft) and 30 kg (66 lbs) while the longest species is the slender giant moray (Strophidon sathete), the longest known specimen of which measured in at 3.94 m (12.9 ft).

Moray eels are found throughout the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. Different species are found in different temperatures and depths, though most species live in relatively shallow, warm water. Several species can live in brackish water and a few will swim upriver and live for a time in fresh water, though there do not appear to be any species that live their entire lives in fresh water. Morays are ambush predators who rely on the element of surprise. They live in small, tight places such as holes in coral, gaps between rocks, or sandy burrows. When prey passes, the eel can lunge out and grab it. Unlike most fish, the eel cannot use suction feeding due to the shapes of their mouths. They have to rely on lunging froward and catching prey with their mouths. Their mouths are adapted in shape to push water to the sides. This reduces water resistance and avoids creating a wave that could push prey away from the eel. If an eel catches prey that cannot be swallowed whole, it will tie itself in a knot while biting on to the food. By pulling its head through the loop, the eel can rip the food into bite-sized pieces. Spending most of their times in burrows also provides protection from predators, especially in juveniles or smaller species. At night, the eels will come out of their burrows to hunt sleeping prey while the larger predators are asleep. Giant morays have also been seen engaging in interspecies cooperative hunting with roving coral groupers (Plectropomus pessuliferus). The eels can fit into small crevices the groupers can't to flush prey into the grouper's path while catching their own. Morays are mostly solitary species and many can be territorial. They are known to be shy and will retreat into their burrows if they feel threatened. They are also curious and many species are quite intelligent.

Morays reproductive strategies are poorly known and differ based on species. While many species seem to have no set mating season and will reproduce whenever they can, others will mate at the same time every year. Some species seem to have dedicated spots to lay their eggs and a few are believed to be anadromous, meaning they travel from the sea to fresh water to spawn. Meanwhile, some of the species that spend a lot of time in fresh water are catadromous, meaning they return to sea to mate. Females will lay their eggs and the male fertilize them. After this, they depart, providing no parental care. As with all true eels, moray eels begin life as leptocephalus larvae. This type of fish larvae is notable for its resemblance to a simple, transparent leaf with a head on one end. These larvae are unique and poorly understood, despite being the larval stage of a lot of different species of fish. They are unusually well developed for larvae, capable of active swimming and generally living life. In fact, some particularly large leptocephalus larvae were initially mistaken for adult fish. They feed mostly on bits of drifting organic material called marine snow and can remain in the larval stage for up to 3 years, with those in colder conditions usually taking longer to metamorphose. All leptocephalus larvae start out with no sex organs, then develop female organs, then develop male ones, becoming simultaneous hermaphrodites. They will ultimately become eith male or female and it is likely that environmental factors are the main determining factor. During metamorphosis into a juvenile, the leptocephalus can reduce in size by up to 90%, resulting in the juvenile being smaller than the larva. The process of maturation is poorly understood, but it seems that most morays will be sexually mature by three years of age.

Morays are shy and generally avoid humans. Though some cultures have hunted them for food, they are often not considered a particularly good food source. Many species have high levels of chemicals called ciguatoxins in their bodies, which can lead to a condition called ciguatera fish poisoning if eaten. The largest threat to morays is habitat loss. This is especially true for the many species that live in coral reefs, which are in increasing danger due to global warming. Attacks on humans are rare and usually happen as a response to a human sticking their hand in the eel's burrow. Some of the large species could cause significant damage with a bite. Some species, usually the smaller ones, are found in the aquarium trade, thought they are not good pets for beginners as even the smallest morays are still large for aquarium fish and have some specific requirements. The curiosity many morays have has led to some becoming familiar with and even friendly to humans, often the result of feeding them. They can recognize individual humans and remember them over the course of years. Aquarium employees sometimes report that the eels will come to nuzzle and play with them and have personalities like dogs. Marine biologists and professional SCUBA divers Ron and Valorie Taylor befriended a pair of eels they named Harry and Fang at the Great Barrier Reef who would remember them and come out to visit them year after year.

Caribbean Monk Seal (Neomonachus tropicalis)

Diet- Crustaceans; Fish; Squid

Cool Facts- Caribbean monk seals were an extremely social species of seal. Also called the sea wolf, these seals lived in colonies of up to 100 individuals and organized their group based on age. The pups would gather together in large groups, lazing in the sun, while their parents went out to hunt. Unfortunately, Caribbean monk seals were extremely chill and lacked any fear of humans. Early colonists saw the seals as an easy food source and thousands were killed for their meat and fat that was used as oil in lamps. The second blow came when the fish and squid the seals relied on were majorly overfished. The endangered Hawaiian and Mediterranean monk seals are threatened by the same threats the Caribbean monk seal faced, but luckily strict protections are limiting poaching attempts and vaccination against disease is aiding in the conservation efforts.

Personality: Cassian seems like your regular closed off tall beastman who excels at sports. But, if you ask his family, or those in the slums of the Sunset Savanna what he’s like, you’ll likely get a mishmash of “ such a good kid” or “ a real sweetheart”. Cassian may seem hard to approach, but he really does want to make friends, he just has a hard time expressing himself. Although, that won’t be much of an issue, as his tail will usually say what his mind cannot.

Backstory:

Born and raised in the slums of the Sunset Savanna, Cassian knew from a young age that as the oldest boy in the house, it was his job to not only help his mother, but also protect his younger siblings. It was tough, having to steal and fight to survive, but Cassian likes to think it made him stronger. When the carriage to Night Raven College showed up, Cassian vowed to not take his newfound opportunity for granted, and would strive to be the best student he could be.

Like his irl counterpart, Cassian can be protective of the people he cares about, but not overtly so.

Has a tad bit of sensitive hearing, but has a VERY sensitive sense of smell.

My Royalty au is originally called Julieta au (bcoz this is inspired of "Juliet" song by lipxlip which is the op song heroine run the show) and i switched it to 'medieval au' but doesn't suit it since Bendy's clothes doesn't match the era (and i have no plan on changing it cuz im too lazy WHAHAHAHA), so i changed it to Royalty Au, plus it involved kingdoms, knights, monsters, demons, angels, kings, queens, princes and princesses, magic etc. It was supposed to be a love triangle of us...

But then i added more characters

Here they are. And yes--MUGMAN HAS HAIR (ignore the arrows)

So here are their descriptions:

Cuphead the Ace - prince, prodigy knight of Calix Animi, foster father: king of Dish, King Kettle (or elder kettle behind the doors). He and mugs were found by Kettle when their house was raided by goblins, evil fae and elves bcoz of their potential magic powers. Kettle was a knight and king at the same time, he rescued them. Their parents are dead (not sure if it will be cannikin and demitasse from inky mystery) and so is the Queen, thats why Kettle vowed to protect people from monsters and is very serious abt it. He is the heir to the throne, his smaller twin brother is Mugman. Like King Kettle, he is also brutal towards monsters, he is 24 yrs old. He is infatuated to a woman who is queen of the oceans

Mugman the Beast Tamer - (beast tamer title is inspired by Cannikin) younger twin brother of The Ace, very close to king kettle, he has heart of gold, he has a girlfriend who lives by the sea, 24 yrs old

The Legendary Chalice - or Ms. Chalice is the general (or any rank called, she's a higher up) of the Calix Animi Knights. She was referred to as "Legendary" due to her skills and experience being so vast. She is 26 yrs old

Siren of the Sea - and that's me! (lol, cringe, ok lets do this in 3rd person pov) she is the isolated queen of the sea who rules every bit of seas and oceans. Seas sounds cooler that ocean right? And smaller too, so every kings and queens have underestimated her power. And also her looks, she prefers minimal jewelries and accessories, another reason for people to belittle her. Tho dont mess with her as she can get a little brutal when she gets angry. She likes the pacific ocean and atlantic ocean a lot. Specifically the Mariana trench, its full of monsters and leviathans down there. She had a stoned heart and always looked tired but she met 2 men who eventually softened her, tho she is torn between the Knight and the Demon, 25 yrs old physically, she was sitting on the throne lately, no one knew what her real age is

Cala Maria the Mergon (mermaid+ gorgon lol) - she is isolated as she is known to have gorgon blood. She was saved by a brave knight named Mugman so she gave him a metal ring with a chain holding a fish hook, she's happy seeing mugman wearing it. They had mutual feelings for each other. She knows Siren and is slightly afraid of her, tho she tries her best to befriend her. 26 yrs old

Alice Angel - sent from above, the princess of the Heavens and a healer. People always says that even tho she has horns. She has bright white wings which made her look more angelic aside from her beauty and kindness. She is vibrant yet calm and isnt shaken by Siren's cold attitude, instead, she always talks to her. Over time, siren seemed to respond to her. And thats when they began being friends. 25 yrs old, She is currently inlove with a wolf. And despite all her feminine traits, she won't hesitate to defend those in need when attacked, or help her friends who are troubled. She's a feisty Angel after all.

Boris the Wolf - a handyman who can do everything ; hunter, chef, play the clarinet, scavenger, messanger--anything u can think is something he can do. He is also a quick learner, thats why. He is close friends to a certain Demon and a lover to an Angel, 28 yrs old, he is calm and wise

(okay lemme explain this real quick--I ship Alice angel and boris, not based on Twisted alice and buddy boris, but rather on Tom Boris and Allison Angel. Theyre married in batim/batdr right? And theyre portrayed as Boris and Alice clones so i dont see why not--)

Bendy the Devil Darlin' or Bendy the Ink Demon - known as the Prince of Hell and next to the Throne, he has a playful yet dangerous attitude towards people, which made them fear him. They always obeyed his orders, and when something goes wrong well u might not like it. The only person who seemed to defy him was the Queen of the Seas, she perked his interest and somehow evolved into something demons cannot feel, love. He is 26 physically, but 257 chronologically, his race--Demons--has an ongoing cold war with the dishes

Holly the Sorceress - a character from inky mystery (i added her bcoz i love her so much), she is known as an archeologist, who continues to learn and discover the unknown. She loves playing with runes and runs a shop that sells potions, food and weapons that will help knights and adventurers alike. She's basically like a merchant famously known to play with dangerous runes. Enthusiastic, ambitious and curious, she is 23 yrs old (i aged her up a bit) and has a pearl necklace given to her by a mermaid friend, Cala Maria, when she helped her walk on land. She has her interest on Siren, a mysterious siren who acts cold. She visited her once to buy something, but she was busy playing with runes so she didn't get much hold of it, also she blabbers about how amazing runes and magic are despite her being a human. Whenever night strikes, she rides a broom and flies. She turns to a witch named 'Mayhem'. People say they were the same but some were defending Holly. Holly don't know about this either, so life continues. Little did she know that Mayhem is her Alter ego, she also has a magic cog from a mysterious machinery she has obtained during one of her digs (note: she only digs sites ALONE so this is her own discovery), tho it is very small.

(the Cog from inky mystery is inspired by the Gear in Batim/batdr, however in this au the ink machine does not exist--or might have been but crumbled to dust, anyways it does not serve something in the au)

Now the setting or place of it all? I dunno aesthetics but i like to imagine it as... Just ur usual generic medieval castle stuff, kingdoms. Also there are many kingdoms here, mainly:

Angels : hovering the sky

Demons: below(hell)

Dish : on land, apparently their land is huge and vast, but is surrounded by water

Sea monsters/leviathans: under the sea and oceans of course, full of corals

Normal humans (but they have access to magic) witch, wizards, animal toons etc : land, but separated from the Dish kingdom

For me, its hard to create kingdoms, but maybe i can get a sketch outta my head? That is if im in the mood

Some people of their races move or migrate to other kingdoms, for example, Holly moved to the Dish Kingdom.

I imagine this au to take place mainly on Dish Kingdom but i dunnoooo maybe it will be changed? Not sure

I’ve seen posts floating around regarding what animals people want to see Arknights operators designed after. I’ve seen lots of people asking for mantis shrimp and while I GET IT, a mantis shrimp brawler would be so fun, but what I think we really need is more Aegir, but of the severely unwieldy variety. I want to see some really messed up fish people based on some of the most insane sea life.

I know the seaborn and Abyssal Hunters side plot is basically done and over, especially with IS3 basically wrapping it all up in a canon alternate universe shaped bow, but what if? We still don’t have answers for all the Aegir and their back stories. I’d love to learn more about Whisperain, especially.

I saw this prompt and just wanted to write something fluffy tonight (instead of the my usual angst that I write). So, enjoy some good old Percico/ Nicercy fluff!

"Nope, puppy dog eyes aren't going to work this time!"

"But babe..."

"No way! Don't "but babe" me, Percy! It's not going to work! We are not keeping that... Whatever the Hades it is, in the house as a pet!" Nico waved his hands in a gesture towards the horrific creature that Percy was just holding in his arms like it was just a normal puppy.

Percy gasped in supposed shock as he cradled the creature closer to his chest and stared back at his boyfriend with wide eyes. "How dare-... Number one his name is Matthew! Number two, he can hear everything you're saying! You're hurting his feelings!"

Nico pinched the bridge of his nose and let an exasperated sigh. "Look, the fact that... Matthew has feelings or not is besides the point. I'm not letting you keep that-... What exactly is Matthew anyways?"

"He's an Atlantic Wolf fish but most importantly, he's my new best friend!"

"Right, of course he is. It still doesn't change the fact that I don't want him in the house! Quite frankly, he's a bit... creepy." Nico looked at the large fish in visible unease.

"Well, other's would describe you as a "bit creepy" but, I still let you stay in the house." Percy stuck his tongue out at Nico in a show of high maturity. "But, it's ok. Matthew prefers salt water so, he'll be staying in the pond in the back yard."

"Percy-."

"What? You said that Matthew couldn't stay in the house. You never said anything about the pond."

"Percy."

"Come on, love! Matthew lost his family! He was all alone down there! I can't leave him to be alone again. Please, Nico? Please?"

Nico looked from Matthew the Atlantic Wolf fish to the pouting face of his boyfriend. Only this time, Percy had upgraded from giving him the regular puppy eyes to giving Nico his trademark "kicked baby seal" eyes. It was such a cheap shot but, Nico couldn't blame him too much. Percy was too good at finding his opponents weaknesses.

Nico let out a deep drawn out sigh, his shoulders sagging. "... Fine. But it's your responsibility to take care of him."

Percy practically beamed at his boyfriend. Leaning in to kiss Nico on the cheek as a thank you before rushing out the back door to show Matthew his new home, chatting excitedly with the fish the whole way.

There'll be a bit of info about 'em under the cut! (And also the folklore behind the Boto!)

CUTIA - agouti are tiny rodents that can be found in most of North, Central and South America; Here in Brazil there's 9 different types of these little guys and i've been fortunate enough to cross ways with 'em, since they're everywhere xD

BOTO-COR-DE-ROSA - amazon river dolphin is famous for it's appearance in brazilian folklore. It says that during the night, they take the form of a very handsome man and seduce girls to spend the night with him. By the morning, he's gone and the girls are left pregnant with it's child. People say that this story was created because girls wouldn't admit they slept with someone before marriage lmao.

GRALHA AZUL - azure jay is the animal symbol of the state of Paraná. They are very important to our ecosystem, as they're responsible for spreading pinhão (pinion? Pine nut? Idk) seeds. Unfortunately, their population is declining and with it, the araucaria forests, which provides their main food.

ARARAJUBA - golden conure is a medium parrot native to the Amazon forest. Their colors are bright and resemble the brazilian flag.

SOLDADINHO-DO-ARARIPE - araripe manakin is a small endangered little guy. It's red cap gave it the name that, from portuguese to english, translates to "little soldier of araripe". It is from Ceará and some other states in the north-eastern region.

ARARA MILITAR - military macaw gets its name from it's green feathers. It's native to Mexico and the South America, and considered a vulnerable species. Apparently its not actually brazilian but i didn't know at the time i drew it xD.

MICO-LEÃO-DOURADO - golden marmoset is endemic to the brazilian atlantic coastal forest. Unfortunately, they're endangered due to loss of habitat, poaching and the illegal pet market.

GATO MARACAJÁ - margay is a small and nocturnal cat. They spend most of the time in trees and are able to turn their ankles 180° degrees, managing to grasp branches extremelly well.

JACARÉ-ANÃO - dwarf caiman is found in most of the north region of South America. It is the smallest of all crocodilians (and my favorite).

PIRARUCU - arapaima is one of the largest freshwater fish and can be found in the Amazon River. They where introduced to East Asia and are now a invasive species- welp, they're a delicacy anyways soooo (never tasted them, but people say they're good).

CACHORRO-DO-MATO - bush dogs have a big range of living but are rarely seen. Their species was, funnily enough, found first as fossils and then as the living thing - people thought they were extinc lol. Their closes living relatives are the Maned Wolf and the African Wild Dog.
