I don’t generally like to do Raku firings (because they produce non utilitarian functional work) but since I have been teaching remotely I decided to fire up the electric kiln to show my students a different type of firing technique. This photo was taken as I was pouring in sawdust on top of the 1800 degree F pots. For those of you who don’t know about Raku firings, it starts by getting your kiln (I use an electric kiln) up to 1900 F then kill the electricity or gas. The next step is to open the kiln and transfer these glowing red pieces of pottery to some type of chamber filled with combustibles. I used a trashcan filled with sawdust, cedar and newspaper. Once each piece is nestled into the can, I poured more sawdust on top, letting that flame for a bit before closing the lid. This creates a reduction atmosphere where the carbon gets trapped into the clay turning in black.
