‘Scomo’s Got Snapchat’ and other terrifying tales from the digital age of politics

Disclaimer: I have never followed or cared about politics but I guess now is a good time to start. To me, politics is as useless as screen doors on a submarine but I’ll try to make what I think is a boring topic as fun as possible for you!

Remember the days where you could peacefully scroll through your feeds greeted by your friends and memes? Remember when you could ignore politics by turning off the TV or walking super fast past the Greens handing out pamphlets at the station? (yes it’s another homemade meme, you’re welcome)

Well those days are over, kiddos. The politicians have invaded social media and they’re here to stay. So let’s take a look at what they’re doing and how it affects our political engagement. I’ll be drawing most of my information from Peter John Chen’s book Australian Politics in a Digital Age and social media itself. 

Pressure from advocacy group Get Up! was a catalyst in the migration of politics to the digital world. In 2006, their concern that young voters were “disenfranchised” by the government led to the establishment of the Australian Electoral Commission’s website for voters to enrol online. The following year, Kevin Rudd used online resources to his advantage in his electoral campaign “Kevin ‘07″. By using a “slick” website, video promotions and social media, Rudd appeared professional and new. The use of social media, such as the then ‘hip’ MySpace and Facebook, allowed them to directly target their desired audience. His Facebook page is still used today to promote his work in the wider community and features links to him in the news.

Peter John Chen writes that “an increasingly mediated politics thus requires individuals who have ‘media literacies’”. Australia has over 16 million social media users  and politicians need to understand these platforms to connect with us. Misuse of platforms can create a perception that a member of parliament is disconnected and out of touch with today’s society. What politicians like, share and post on social media contribute to our overall view of them. Take Liberal senator Jim Molan for example. He describes himself as a supporter of “major Islamic, Muslim countries in this world” but shared an anti-Muslim video from hate group Britain First on his Facebook and faced loads of backlash, including Labor’s Penny Wong tweeting that the promotion of "bigotry and divisiveness has no place in our society and it certainly has no place in our parliament." It’s pretty disappointing that a man like that has power in our country. 

And now my favourite part... memes. The fact that our politicians are on social media has led them become a part of pop culture. Scott Morrison’s joining of Snapchat has given us even more content to exploit for the internet’s entertainment. This video from instagram (one of my faves) speaks volumes about how  young people think Scomo is ridiculous...
