The Longest Night

Title:  The Longest Night Author: @peletiersdixon Rating:  G Summary:  It’s their first winter on the road, and Daryl brings Carol a token to boost her spirits A/N:  Merry Christmas! Hope you enjoy!!

It was obviously the beginning of winter—the shortest days of the year, nights getting longer and longer, with little sun left to guide them on their runs between makeshift shelters. Winters were milder down south, but the nights still dipped into freezing temperature, and it was a struggle for their ragged little group to find places to try to scrabble together some rest, if not actual sleep.

Carol looked around the rundown convenience store, and pulled the thin blanket she had closer around her shoulders. They were huddled together for warmth, but still clung to their little groups: Rick, Lori, and Carl; Hershel, Beth, Maggie, and Glenn; T-Dog, Daryl, and herself. The three of them were the outsiders, and she did her best to see that Daryl and T didn’t become too ostracized from the rest of them. Daryl was out hunting right now, hoping to find some small animal to supplement their meager stores. T was on watch, so she was left to her own devices and sleep was hard to come by with the cold permeating her bones.

It was close to Christmas, not that anyone was thinking of celebrating holidays anymore. But the time of year, the smell in the air, the cold weather brought all the memories to the forefront. Last year, she and Sophia had sat up on Christmas Eve while Ed had been working the night shift and drank hot chocolate while watching The Muppet’s Christmas Carol. It was the only bit of celebrating they enjoyed. The peace they relished when it was just the two of them.

Her eyes burned from holding back the unshed tears as she sat with the memory. Remembering running her fingers through the soft shiny hair of her little girl and the scent of her green apple shampoo wafting past her nostrils. The feel of her tiny body cuddled up against the side of her mother, burrowing into her warmth. Carol blinked back the stinging sensation and quietly sniffled into the blanket. The ever present ache of Sophia’s absence felt like a hole in Carol’s chest, one she had to sit with and could never ever fill.

She slid down onto the cold floor, head propped on a knapsack, and curled into a tight ball to try to conserve her meager warmth, pulling the blanket tighter around her thin frame. As the night wore on, she drifted off, awakening in fits and starts as cold shivers wracked her body until a warmth drifted over her back. She had the vaguest awareness of two presences surrounding her and felt a wash of safety and security filter through her as she sensed T-Dog switch out with Rick on watch. Through the mingling smells of body odor and sweat, and unwashed clothes mixed with gore and walker guts, she scented the fresh outdoors: clean air and pine trees, and she knew Daryl was back, and had thrown his blanket over her back. Falling back to sleep was much easier after that.

Once morning arrived, she awoke feeling slightly more rested, and sat up, running her hands over her face. Muted light filtered in through the windows spilling over the tiled floors, and illuminating a brown beer bottle sitting next to her on the floor. Her breath caught as she realized what was in the bottle. A Cherokee rose, browning on the edge of the petals and looking so much the worse for wear (probably the last of the season,) sat limply in the bottle.

It wasn’t the flower itself that caused her chest to quake. It was the knowledge that she wasn’t alone in her memories of Sophia. That Carol was seen, and known. That Daryl hadn’t forgotten, wouldn’t forget. She wasn’t sitting solitary in her pain. It was a flower that bloomed for a mother’s tears. And this year, this Christmas, Daryl had sensed she was hurting, and he had taken action, as he was prone to do. Words weren’t his style. But when she looked at that tiny offering, she didn’t need words. She had all she needed.

There’s something wrong with people if they’re publicly spewing hate about a little girl who’s just doing her best to play one of the most iconic roles on screen. I want to be real clear that I see any such nastiness on my dash- bye! 👋🏻

And for the record I think she’s absolutely nailing it, it couldn’t be done any better than this, and Carrie Fisher would be incredibly proud.

Bouncing off this post because I’ve seen a lot of people adding this thought in the reblogs.

Don’t ever be afraid to read way back in time (I’m talking many years!) through someone’s AO3 works, and leave kudos and positive comments along the way. I promise it’s not weird or creepy or any of the things people sometimes worry about! This should be your rule of thumb-

If an author chose to leave a fic on AO3, no matter how old, they want it to be read and they want to know when you’ve enjoyed it! 👌

My #1 post of 2022

I’m know I’m not the first person to say this, but any newbies on tumblr really need to understand how different this is from a lot of other social media. Particularly tiktok.

I just saw a creator on tiktok reminding followers that it’s actually a problem when someone goes back to the earliest post and watches all the posts chronologically, liking and commenting along the way. The stupid app recognizes it as spam or something and then kinda puts a halt on their account? Literally punishing people for positive engagement?? 🥴🤦‍♀️

I’ve already heard people saying years back how they don’t want to be “creepy” and go through a persons blog, liking and reblogging tons of stuff. But think how many more people are going to be worried about it now, thinking they might do actual damage! Most people, especially younger people, are so used to the way tiktok works now. So please, do not ever worry about this on here. Just remember-

You will never do any harm if you go on a like and reblog fest through someone’s tumblr blog! The only risk you’re taking is to make the blog owner weep for joy!! 😭🤣

I need all the help possible, a long, long time ago I read a fic and recently I commented on it in a @mizjoely post, as usual I don't remember the name or the author, but @cyn0705 has asked my help to find it.

The problem is that I already combed all my AO3 history and couldn't find it. Now I think it could have been on ff.net

I don't remember much of the plot, but I hope someone recognizes it anyway

It was Victorian AU, possibly... Sherlock and Molly are married, but they don't live together, I think she used to write him letters, and over time the letters became more sporadic until one day they stopped arriving. Sherlock pays a visiting to his wife on the country side, and discovers a very independent woman, probably no longer in love with him, so he has to win her love back

I left a review and am also recommending The Ghost and Molly Hooper by doctor_WTF. This is the story of Molly who purchased 221B Baker St only to find that the last inhabitant died, but never really left. This is set as an AU with the context of TRF. 

Also gonna recommend A Line to Cross by @blogyourfeelingsaway. This is an AU where Molly doesn’t actually like Sherlock at first, much to his surprise...

DAY TWO - Angst Fest 

Phoenix by @lono285. This is the author’s summary: Nothing could bring Molly Hooper back to life. He saw her final breath leave her body. But with a few short words from a nameless voice on the telephone, he realized the resumed beating of his heart had a name: hope.

Ghost of A Girl by Alethnya. Author’s summary: Death, as it turns out, wasn't quite as final as Molly had always believed. Fear not, you will smile at the end, I promise. 

 All You Ever Wanted At Just The Wrong Time by @soyeahso. This wasn’t what Molly expected being a relationship with Sherlock would be like. 

The Coffin-Maker’s Lullaby by @hobbitsdoitbetter. This is ANGST but it’s more like catharsis post-S4.

DAY THREE - When We Were Young (S1 & S2)

A Beautiful Mind by jankmusic. I have a theme for fics, apparently, because this one is also super emotional. This is set vaguely in the S2 timeline, but it’s an amnesia fic that starts with established Sherlolly. But then...

Her Last Bow by @PetraTodd. This is just after S2. Author’s summary: Like a knight going off to war, when Sherlock goes off to fight Moriarty's network, he takes a favor from Molly Hooper. (Of course, favors are normally *given* but Sherlock isn't really one for manners.)

Every Time and Always by @flaignhan. Written just after S2.01 aired.

DAY FOUR - Bust Out (Comedy Gold)

Friends Like These by @elixirbb. Sherlolly post-S2 from Lestrade’s POV. 

A Little Inspiration by @lilsherlockian1975. Humor with some angst, but a fun read. 

If You Like It... by ll_again. ...put a ring on it. Post-S3 where Molly and the Holmes parents form a friendship. 

The New Conception by Quarto. Post-S3 ish. Author’s summary: It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single consulting detective in possession of an undercover assignment must be in want of a wife.

DAY FIVE - EPIC (Long Fics)

A Fearful Hope Was All The World by @miabicicletta . End of the world AU that somehow hits HARD especially now. Not for the emotionally fragile, but there’s still HEA. 

In matters of the heart by TheSapphireSky. Regency AU. There’s mystery and heart-wrenching emotion with our favorite idiots. It’s *chef’s kiss*. 

The Signs of the Four by Emma_Lynch. Victorian AU you’re looking for. 

The Necessary Mother by darthsydious. Victorian AU where Sherlock is a single father and Molly comes to help him. This isn’t on AO3, so I will tag with the warning of character death (secondary, but still gutting due to period typical mortality). 

Molly Hooper and the Flagon Nocturnal by Zoa. It’s a CRIME that this Indiana Jones AU doesn’t have more comments.

In general, if you’re looking for LONG fics, check out the 2015 Sherlolly Big Bang Collection. Every fic has a minimum of 25K. 

DAY SIX - Fluffy Friday

DAY SEVEN - Free For All

You guys know I’m a sucker for a period AU. So I’m going to recommend one of my favorite AUs: London Bridge Is Falling Down by @lono285. This is a WWII-era AU that I love to bits and pieces because it’s ADORABLE. 

Speaking of AUs, here’s a Victorian amnesia fic. Changing Faces by @likingthistoomuch

A - Your current OTP

By current OTP I guess we mean most recent and that would be Darklina from Shadow and Bone.

F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom

Hmmm... not sure. Do we count the years before almost constant internet interaction and Tumblr/Twitter/Social Media general? If so I guess since the early 00's that I first got introduced to Friends and Dawson's Creek.

G - Do you remember your first OTP, if so who was in it

Either Mondler from Friends or Joey/Pacey from Dawson's Creek. Those two ships were definitely my first ones. Still love them to this day.

I - Has tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why

I don't think so. I generally try to just stay in my corner and just enjoy the things ( shows/ships/characters ) I love while ignoring the things I don't love and don't bother anyone.

L - Your favorite fanartist/author gives you one request, what do you ask for

The possibilities are endless honestly. I guess I would choose any of my favorite ships in fanart inspired by classic movie scenes, like Darklina in The Notebook-based kiss in the rain art, or Saphne in a You've Got Mail inspired art, or switch up ships and fandoms like having Sherlolly drawn in the Deckerstar first kiss at the beach and Deckerstar having the Sherlolly kiss... Like I said, the possibilities are endless.

N - Your favorite fanfiction or fanauthor

Oh my... well, I Told You So by @writingwife-83 is always been my personal comfort fanfic for me, I always go back to it, and to many other stories of her like Half Agony, Half Hope. Another favorite of mine is The Side of the Angels by @mizjoely and practically everything she has ever written. I also really love the work of @pennywaltzy and her many fandoms. And I have many new fics from the Deckerstar and the Darklina fandom that I will mention soon ( I hope ) and add on my writing sideblog @the-consulting-strange-writer.

O - Choose a song at random, which OTP does it remind you of

Wicked Games ( the Ursine Vulpine/Annaca cover ) makes me think of all of my ships, but currently mostly Deckerstar & Darklina. And Mercy by Shawn Mendes just screams Deckerstar to me.

Just... movie AU's. I love taking a favorite movie plot ( especially romantic comedies ) and then insert my ships in them.

Technically, I wasn’t tagged, and technically, I don’t have 20 stories published on AO3 (I only have 19), so I’ll have to supplement with an unpublished WIP.  

I’m also partaking in hopes that rereading some of my opening lines will magically undo this MASSIVE writer’s block I’m having trying to wrap up my latest fic. “Joyeux Noël!”

Daryl groaned and rolled onto his side away from the chirpily annoying voice. “G��way,” he mumbled into his pillow as he attempted to burrito himself back into sleep. “S’not even light out yet.”

“Dammit, Daryl, get your ass out of bed, Laurent and the other kids are waiting for their first visit from Santa Claus, and you agreed to play the part!”

Daryl’s groan turned to a yelp of protest as the blanket was brutally, mercilessly yanked out of his grip and tossed to the floor. He sat up, shaking his hair out of his face, and glared at his nemesis. Had he really told this woman he loved her? What a dumbass he’d been! If he’d known she’d turn on him like this, he’d’ve left her in the hands of the Pouvoir Des Vivants agents who’d brung her over to France when she’d come looking for him!

“Carol,” he whined, reaching up to grasp her wrists in his and yank her down against his body. “Wouldn’t you rather stay in bed and, you know, find somethin’ more interesting to do?”

Then he kissed her, and she kissed him back, melting into his arms, and he thought he’d won - and then she neatly flipped him over and onto the floor where he landed with a huge thump and a loud, “What the hell-!!”

She peered down at him, silver hair glowing like a halo in the dim light of the rising sun. “Kids first, Daryl,” she said primly. “But I promise,” she added as he glared up at her, “Santa and Mrs. Claus will have the rest of the day all to themselves.”

Then she smiled, and all his objections - weak, piddly things he knew them to be - melted in the quiet joy he felt at being reunited with the one person in all the world who understood him best…

…and still loved him as much as he loved her.

What fanfic?

I can’t remember the title, but Uhura was a CSA survivor whose abuser was a telepath, making her hesitant to mind meld with Spock. Then she aborted Spock’s baby without telling him until after the fact and he’s so betrayed that she wouldn’t give up her fledgling career while trying to deal with her past trauma that he’d much rather be around Kirk, because Kirk will let him mind meld. It’s actually pre-slash, but it’s clear what the author was intending.

It was also very poorly tagged, which makes it all the worse. Thankfully, it was written a long time ago, so unless you really dig deep you won’t stumble on it.

Yeah, I wish it was the same person, just so there could only be one of them. Unfortunately, it is a feature in too much fic.

Most Popular Multi-Chapter Story:  “Competition,” which is just slightly-sexy fluff.  

Favorite Story You Wrote: Oddly enough, “The Second Mrs. Watson.”  I didn’t belabor any of the jokes, I think I handled the multiple POVs well, the OFC was well-received and I am happy with the balance of humor and melancholy.

Story You Were Nervous to Post: I have recently written two angsty porn-with-feelings fics that I was very nervous about.  “Two Weeks Ago,” which is Sherlolly, and “Maybe the Last Time,” which is Warstan.  I do not feel confident in writing porn which is probably why I wrote angsty porn.  Even if it’s not hot it is *sad*, okay, and therefore I have succeeded.

Anyway both of them were quite well received so ::shrugs::

How Do You Choose Your Titles:  Ugh.  I basically hate myself for an hour or two and then pick a song lyric or something that summarizes it.  I am not happy with most of my titles.

Do You Outline: If it’s looking like it’s going to be more than a couple thousand words, definitely.  Otherwise I write myself into corners and give up.

In-Progress: 1 in the sense that it’s partially published and ongoing.  There’s a whole lotta ones percolating in various levels of on-the-page-ness

Coming Soon: None.  I don’t mean I’m done after this one but let’s be honest here, I am not the most prolific ficcer.  We’ll see where inspiration strikes.

Do You Accept Prompts: Sure!  In fact several of my most popular fics (and that stupid Warstan “True Lies” AU which will not leave my brain were based off prompts.  In some cases prompts said to other people.

Upcoming Story You Are Most Excited to Write: I want to do a John Watson’s Groundhog Days AU prompt in which John wakes up in the unaired pilot (which I *think* was a prompt by @ohaine but I honestly cannot find proof of this).  It needs to be kind of “Sherlock Holmes’s Diaries,” in which Sherlock is expecting to dazzle John with his deductions and John is just like, “Are you wearing jeans?”

Oh, I love these things!!!! Thank you for tagging me, @kitcat992!

1. At what age did you start writing fanfiction?

14 or 15.  This was back in the 80s, mind, so we had only JUST got our first computer - this beast called an IMB Zeos Clone.  Clunky, awkward, the only writing program was something along the lines of an ancient word processor.  After working through the gauntlet of online dialup I was faced with this nebulous “web” hunt and peck through these various shoddy sites.  HOW I discovered fanfic?  You know, I honestly cannot remember.  What I first remember reading was Star Wars and Star Trek.  The very first thing I started writing was a novel length Star Wars adventure based heavily on the published novels and featuring a self-insert Mary Sue.  Classic.  Took me 5 years to complete and I never posted it (though I still have it on hard disc lol). 

2. Who is your favorite author?

As others have stated, I have no single favorite.  I adore the writings of my bestie, SydneyWoo, in the Psych fandom - though she hasn’t written in years.  FAR too many to list, though, of other favorite Psych authors but you can find the list HERE.  For the MCU, I adoooore @kitcat992, @yellowdistress, @silentsaebyeok, and @sumpetals as well as several others.  For Sherlock one of my biggest faves is sgam76 - she is MAGIC the way she writes massive stories that heavily feature the contentious/caring relationship between Mycroft and Sherlock and she fleshes out that world like no other.  (plus her whump is decadent!!!).  Another Sherlock fave is @mizjoely - her Sherlock/Molly fics are meltingly glorious and pound the romance button hard!  

3. Favorite type of scene to write?

That oppressive anxiety-laden moment leading up to horror.  When the character is just coming to realize how bad their circumstances are about to become yet also knowing there is no escape.  

4. What is your favorite fanfic?

Holy hell, well again, this isn’t possibly a single answer as I have different fics I adore in different fandoms (and MANY besides!)!  I’ll do my best not to make this too long!!

5. What tags do you avoid like the plague?

I really hate deathfic (yet DO have a few I’ve read but they were exceptions).  Save for Sherlolly (Sherlock/Molly) I pretty much avoid romance geared fic - especially non-canon pairings.  

I WILL NEVER READ CANON COMPLIANT ENDGAME FIC. FULL STOP.

If the fic lists Morgan Stark among the characters I will swipe left.

If the fic lists Starker I will light my computer on fire.

I rarely read au fic of any sort - I like my characters to be who they are with very few exceptions.

I don’t really care for crackfic.

I almost never read fic shorter than 1,000 words.  

6. What AU do you wish to write but feel like you won’t manage?

I currently AM writing an Endgame au - though not the actual events so much as referencing an alternate history.  This is a massive undertaking and will like take until the end of time to complete.

7. Do you outline, or write as you go?

Pretty much develop the story as I go.  I tend to have a broad sense of the story in my mind but mostly it’s an organic process that I build on as I go - adding tons of notes after every chapter.

8. What has been your favorite story to write so far? Why?

Oh, gosh...  Well, for Psych, it’s Where There is Wailing and Gnashing of Teeth; a cannibal/horror adventure that took me about 7 years to finish.  I love it because my favorite thing about writing Psych is to insert what we’ll NEVER see in that franchise - like cannibalism lol! Ok, yeah, they did that zombie episode but STILL it was just a dream so...  Anyhow, this fic was actually inspired by a dream my friend, SydneyWoo, had.  The research was straight up nauseating, not gonna lie.  However, I loved writing such a deviant character and it’s easily the worst whump I’ve ever inflicted on Shawn. 

For MCU it’s Simple Math; a Tony-centric introspective piece and the first story I every wrote for that fandom.  This story tries to unpack Tony’s feelings following Obie’s betrayal - something I’ve yet to find in fanfic that delves into it to my satisfaction.  While a one-shot it is 100% about Tony trying to figure out why Obie hated him.  There is very much a child-like confusion and loss to his emotions as I feel that has to be the greatest hurt caused by someone he’d thought was a friend (prior to Civil War).  Plus I had so many questions, myself, and wanted to work through them through Tony’s mind.   

For Sherlock, it’s the in-progress story, The Tiger and the Shark, a non-con whump/PTSD fic that, again, is the first fic I’ve ever written for this fandom.  Yet another fic dealing with a subject that other fics of this sort never satisfy with their handling.  Too often they are either too short or too graphic or may be well written but tend to move too fast towards recovery.  I wanted to explore the day to day details.  Some days are good, more days are bad - or numb - or frantic.  I wanted to see how other characters reacted - my favorite being Mycroft (criminally underused in fandom).  This story spans over a year (so far) so I don’t cut corners on the trauma.  It is 95% comfort and getting into Sherlock’s head, as he copes, has easily been, by turns, a wonderful as well as heart-wrenching experience.   

9. Do you prefer to write one-shots or multi-chapters? Why?

I try to write one-shots but always end up going multi-chapter.  I admit I LOVE multi-chapter because it allows me to truly develop the story properly and dig into character trauma.

10. What is your favorite kind of comment?

Like everyone else has said, it’s any comment that goes deep into analyzing my story.  I LOVE the opportunity to engage with a commentator and the more involved the comment, the easier it is to interact.

11. Why did you start writing fanfiction? Why are you still writing?

Even as a tiny childling I loved telling stories.  I was always writing little books about animals - sorta like the Serendipity tales.  How that suddenly turned towards fanfic I honestly can’t remember.  Most likely born from discovering fanfic and realizing there were things I wanted to see that wasn’t being provided by the shows and movies I watched aka whump.  

I continue to write fanfic because, the more I develop as a writer the more passionate I feel about my craft.  Sites like AO3 are hugely encouraging towards that end as there is a whole community of writers with which I’m honored to interact who keep feeding my love of story telling.  And since the fandoms I love, sadly, continue to disappoint with their stupid ass decisions I feel burdened with glorious purpose to put right what they made wrong.
