Ritual of the Rose - Ch 3
"That form you're wearing is a corpse. It should have been in the ground years ago," Rio hissed, and as she said it, her voice a cold mist over his skin, Billy could feel decay setting in, his fingernails loose and prone to falling away, his skin slack on bones, his heart no longer beating in his chest—
Fic Summary: Changes the events of the last episode. Instead, Agatha swears a vow and prepares to go on one final adventure with Death.
For some reason, Billy has decided he's a protagonist as well.
Part 1 Part 2
Chapter 3 - Who is Billy Maximoff?
William Kaplan was a murderer.
No. William Kaplan was dead. He'd died in a carwreck with his parents and someone else had co-opted his body.
That wasn’t his fault! William was already dead and he was dying too, so he'd grabbed on to what he could, like some kind of weird, body-snatching parasite. Only he hadn't gotten just a host, he'd also gotten a life, someone else's life, someone else’s parents, who were currently downstairs thinking loud, worried thoughts about what was going on with their son.
Drugs? Online bullying, maybe? He was so into that weird occult stuff, should they have put a stop to that sooner?
No, he was a good boy. Reliable, kind, got good grades, had never done anything seriously wrong. They should trust him.
And here it was, he braced for it every time, and it still hurt.
It's only, he changed so much after the accident.
I'm sorry, he wanted to tell them. I'm so, so, so sorry, I'm not your son, I'm the leech that took his body. You guys are great parents, and you're my parents, you're the only parents I've ever known, please don't hate me for not being him.
He couldn't tell them that, though. He couldn't tell them their son had died years ago and now there was only him, Billy Maximoff, murderer.
He couldn't tell them the murder part either, couldn't sit downstairs on the couch and sob and let them hug him and tell him it would get better, like they had the first time he'd gotten his heart broken or a bad grade or a mean comment on his Instagram. He couldn't even let them be his parents right now, because there was no way he could confess that he'd killed three women on a Road he created with his mind.
Agatha said she would have killed all of them. And she had, in the most literal sense, killed Alice. Still, it had been his idea to form a coven in the first place, his idea to lure victims to her, even if he hadn't known what he was doing.
He should hate her, but he was too busy hating himself.
He uncurled his hand, locked in a fist since the fight in Agatha's garden. Took out the crumpled piece of stationary and smoothed it out. Noted with mild amusement that it seemed to have silly cartoon cats around the edge of the page. He couldn't imagine anything less Agatha, so probably this had belonged Agnes prior to her time as a hardboiled detective.
Agnes, a woman who'd been kept that way by his ostensible mother, who'd also trapped and tortured a whole town.
Boys, thanks for choosing me to be your mom.
"William! Do you want some dinner?"
He jumped and his hand clamped tight around the stationary again. That was his mother, he reminded himself, the one calling to him with concern in her voice. "No," he said. "I'm not very hungry right now."
"This is why you're such a beanpole!" His dad called, trying for jovial.
"I'm watching my figure," he retorted on automatic, smoothing the paper once more and looking at the address.
An apartment in New York City. No other information, except the hastily scrawled number on the bottom.
He wasn't going to call. He didn't need Agatha's help anymore. He had never needed her help, probably—except for the part where he had and he still didn't know if he was murderer a fourth time over for that, if he'd killed the boy he'd helped put Tommy in.
But that part was done and he didn’t even really regret it. The Road had made his wish come true. Now he needed to find his brother. Tommy, at least, wouldn't go through what he had, waking up with no memory and no understanding of what had happened to him.
Agatha had to told him to go alone. He could do this. He'd made a whole (deadly) reality. He could handle one mysterious stranger.
Resolute, he turned to go and almost screamed, clapped his hands over his mouth to stop the sound at the last moment so he didn't get his parent's attention.
He really didn't want them to come up here, because standing too close, smiling like an open wound, was Rio.
"You know, I think she forgets I can do this?" the woman said. She was wearing her green witch outfit, skintight and kind of cool in a scary way, but all Billy could remember was staring into the skeletal face of Death. "Be everywhere at once, I mean." Then she lunged suddenly, closing the gap between them until their noses almost brushed. "Boo!"
He jumped back and hit his dresser, gave a short, unmanly shriek and she burst into cackles of laughter so loud he worried his parents were about to come rushing up the stairs.
"W-what do you want? Are you here to—" he said, swallowed and didn't finish the sentence, his eyes on the blade in her hand, even though he knew she wasn't going to literally stab him to death.
Well, he really hoped she wasn't going to stab him to death.
"Take you? I should, you know. This…" she shook her head, back and forth, and each time it turned too far, creating the unnerving illusion her head was going to start spinning around like a bad horror movie effect. "This is so wrong, what you're doing here. You're the wrong soul in the wrong body. Very, very gross. But no, not right now, I'm busy letting Agatha drag me along like she always does. Do you know she's really bossy?"
"I know," Billy said, unsure if they were bonding here.
"Right, I bet you do. That whole Road business." She paused, twirled her knife, paced in a circle around his room and watching her now, he couldn't imagine how he'd ever thought she was a normal person, even a normal witch. She moved like a tiger penned into a cage, as though the form she wore didn't quite contain the edges of her, a non-Euclidean—
"She likes you, you know," Rio said, interrupting his mind's desperate attempt to comprehend what was right in front of him. "Agatha, I mean."
"Can she? Like people?" Billy said, which prompted a shorter, sharper cackle.
"I ask myself that All. The. Time," Rio said, sprawling back on his bed and kicking her feet, impatient, restless, almost human except for all the ways she wasn’t. "But apparently she's got a soft spot for little boys."
It took Billy a moment to correctly interpret that statement. "Because of her son."
Rio gave a one-shouldered shrug. "Probably. So maybe I can help."
"What?!"
"You," she pointed her knife at him. "Maybe I can help you."
"With what?"
She wrinkled her nose, jerked the knife up and down to indicate all of him. "Your…condition."
"…And that help isn't killing me?"
"Right," Rio said. "But it would involve you vacating that bod—"
"No!" Billy snapped, his arms wrapping tight around himself, as though he could keep his body held in place.
"That form you're wearing is a corpse. It should have been in the ground years ago," Rio hissed, and as she said it, her voice a cold mist over his skin, Billy could feel decay setting in, his fingernails loose and prone to falling away, his skin slack on bones, his heart no longer beating in his chest
"Stop!" His magic flared and on instinct, he grabbed for her mind, like he'd done to Jen and Lilia and for a brief, overwhelming moment, he was Death, standing side-by-side with a winged shadow bigger than he could grasp and he was—
He was everywhere. He was vast, all-consuming, but deeply personal at the same time.
He stood at a hospital bed, listening to the monitors make a sound he'd only heard in movies. Flatline. "…Sorry," he said to the woman standing in front of him, looking much healthier and more alive than what lay in the bed.
"Damn," the woman said. "I'd really hoped I'd get a bit longer."
"Everyone does," he said, or rather, something else said, speaking through him like he were a ventriloquist's dummy. "How was what you had?"
He barely heard the answer. There were simply too many, all competing for his attention. An undiscovered allergy. A stupid bet about who could drink the most. A car wreck. A heart attack. Kidney failure. Aneurysm.
And then he was scooped up, deposited back into his body on a wave of green magic, and for a moment, he could see himself as she did, an abomination, an outright defiance of the natural order—
"I'm not doing that to them!"
He snapped back to himself, fully himself, no trace of lingering Death. Rio was still on his bed, looking up at him with narrowed eyes, her mouth firmed into a thin, sharp line. "…You are powerful. And dangerous. I can't believe Ags didn't drain you dry. Them who?"
He collapsed onto the floor, pulled his knees to his chest. "My paren—"
"William? Are you okay?" A familiar voice called up the stairs.
"Yes! Everything's fine, mom."
"Their son is dead," Rio pointed out and Billy glared what he hoped were daggers at her, feeling the urge to use his power boil up again, magic dancing across his fingertips. He forced himself to wrestle it back. He didn't know if he would ever sort out everything he'd seen in the few seconds he'd been Death. He was certain he didn't want another go-round and he'd seen how ineffective Agatha had been at fighting her with direct magic, something he didn't even know how to use.
"I'm their son! And I'm not going to let you kill me,” he said, very aware that he had no way of preventing her from doing whatever she wanted.
Rio tossed her head back and cackled, shrieked, and his parents must not have been able to hear her at all, because she was really loud. "You can't stop me. Even Ags can't stop me and she knows that, though she hates it." Something in her expression went distant, sad like mourners at a funeral. "...She knows that,” she repeated and Billy opened his mouth to ask, but Death spoke first. "But fine, have it your way, keep this disgusting charade up a little while longer. Eventually I'll come and collect. I always do. I am the end of all things, baby!" She sprung to her feet, spread her hands too wide and gave him a toothy smile. "Sooner or later, everything is mine."
"…I can see why you and Agatha might have worked once. She's really dramatic too," he said, which got him another cackling laugh as response.
"She is. I've got nothing on Agatha Harkness," Rio agreed, cloying affection lacing her voice.
"…creep," he muttered.
Rio only snickered. "You'll understand one day, when you fall in love," she told him.
"I am in love! I just have a healthy relationship, thank you.”
"Someday, you will meet someone who takes part of you away with them, and you never, ever get it back," Rio said, somehow managing to sound genuinely adoring as she said it. "And then you'll know what love is."
"…I think you should look into counseling."
"Tell your father to get his heart checked," Death replied and then, before he'd even processed the words, she was gone.
“...Thank you?" he whispered to thin air, then staggered to his feet, suddenly desperate for his parent’s company even if he couldn’t tell them a single true thing about his life.
"Hey, dad," he said as he came down the stairs. "I'm going to ask you to do something really weird…"
For more of Rio being everywhere at once, try Death and the Scarlet Witch. Or for something cuter, try the witch who cried wolf.
#agatha x rio#agatha all along#agathario#billy maximoff#ritual of the rose#uh idk rio is sort of trying to help I guess#She's a good girlfriend when Agatha isn't looking

MALEVOLENT PART 48 LETS GOOOO
Oh boy coughing up blood! That’s funnnnn
New characters: Barnabus and Gerard…and the absent Lord Everard. And now Friar Halbrook and Langward.
I’m worried about that “lesser house of god” comment. Alter to the great old ones hidden away somewhere maybe??
This feels like the start of a murder mystery, is this about to turn into a modern mystery?
I vibe with this Barnabus guy, I like him.
Lol cartoon villain beard
Alia Showl—don’t like that comment about her “maintaining decorum,” just what is she capable of?
Has…has Arthur just accidently joined the proto-Order of the Fallen Star??? That’s what this sounds like
Halbrook’s first name is Dorian, oooh he’s a polymath and scientist? That’s rad
Oh no now we find out what kind of person Arthur’s impersonating, what’s it going to be? “Aristocratic, captivating, and clever, your ability to fit into most any situation and do whatever you see is necessary…debate, beguile, manipulate.”—well that’s not too bad. Arthur certainly is clever and the people constantly becoming obsessed with him would probably call him captivating. He’s also very adaptable. The one thing I’m not sure about is the manipulation part, Arthur doesn’t usually think things through enough to really manipulate, lol.
The French guy, Gerard, is an architect. Reminds me of TMA’s version of Robert Smirke. Langward is a doctor, maybe he can help out Arthur! Barnabus is an astronomer and an alchemist??? RAD. And he apparently has…visions?
This is definitely the start of the Order of the Fallen Star
BLACK STONE! Well our quest just got a hell lot easier.
Wait no ok, I was wrong. The Order already exists, Langward is involved with it.
…but we’re not going to see the stone until tomorrow. Somebody’s about to get murdered and/or steal the stone for themselves and this is going to turn into a mystery. 100% certain on this.
Hmm yeah the ring thing is an interesting dilemma. That’s going to come into play later
I love how comfortable John is when giving confident advice and instructions to Arthur about what to do and say
Ahahahha what god do you follow Arthur? which one? One’s certainly been giving you instructions that you’ve been automatically following this entire time! I’m so curious about what John would have wanted him to say. …I’m not so sure saying that you’re an atheist is going to go over very well in this time/place/with this person.
…yeah, about what I expected.
Hah, maybe John can make up for Arthur’s lack of manipulative instincts
This is a murder mystery, this is a murder mystery!!! It’s been too long since Arthur got to be a proper detective, this is going to be funnnnn. Arthur’s picking up my vibes. Love this analysis
Aaaaand there it is! Here we go folks!
The friar was probably in bed at the time of the crime, but Arthur and john can’t confirm it! John you should have let Arthur confirm his location. …though waiting longer before going to the scream for help might cast suspicion on Arthur himself.
Oh yeah the death vision power! Honestly its been so long since that came up that I forgot it was something that they had. But they’ll still have to prove to the group that whatever they see is true
Langward is the victim, that’s interesting. And the friar is deeply suspicious. I look forward to whatever excuse Arthur is going to give for why a prince is also an excellent detective and why he should run this investigation
So Gerard is with the Order as well, and by Everard’s smile, he knew this, but didn’t out it to everyone earlier. Why? Seems almost as if he wanted Gerard to admit it himself. Now there’s two rings in play! Check the corpse for the order ring.
I’m with john, having the ring is way too dangerous. Still, having dallied that long is also dangerous, especially if anybody finds it. Arthur’s best bet might actually be claiming to be an order member himself or coming up with another excuse for having it
Of course there’s no ring, that’s what makes this mystery so interesting! The best way forward for Arthur is to be as honest and open as possible.
Arthur’s trying to piss off Barnabus for some reason, see if he slips up and reveals something in his rage? Arthur definitely can be manipulative sometimes actually, he just doesn’t get much opportunity to show it in this show
Oh that’s despicable Arthur. poor Barnabus. Still, it’ll buy Arthur time to figure out what really happened and they aren’t going to do anything to Barnabus on that much evidence.
Yeahhhhh Arthur! rally everybody, organize them! you’re the expert here, even if they don’t know that
I’m worried about Everard stepping out for a moment, even if he has the excuse of going to get Alia.
“Do you believe you are a decent man?” UH THAT’S OMINOUS.
Ok Everard exposition time I guess. OH is the black stone gone? Is this why he’s acting weird? …ewwww.
WAT. Okay she’s telekinetic I GUESS?
Okay maybe the stone isn’t gone, but that doesn’t explain why he’s acting like this. …it sounds like he gets something about of showing the stone to others and that makes me anxious that he’s planning to sacrifice them to it
DAMN EVERARD JUST DUMP THAT ON EVERYONE. …why is Barnabus smiling?
NOW I HAVE TO WAIT A MONTH TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY! I’M NOT GOOD ENOUGH AT MYSTERIES TO FIGURE IT OUT NOW! Ahhhhhhh noooooooo. I love this episode. Glad to see Arthur doing some detecting again.

How being "Team Dorne" has shaped my opinions on hotd (and later my convictions as Team Green)
Alright, first of all, I'd like to state that Dorne is one of my favorite regions in ASOIAF. Book Dorne I mean, mostly because of fan theories because if we rely only on Martin we will never see what Dorne is planning.
Being Team Dorne also means I'm not fond of dragons and Targaryens/valyrians in general, so why all of a sudden I was convinced by the Greens, who also have dragons/Targaryens?
Well, here are the reasons based mainly on hotd and book spoilers/theories I've read:
3-They're losing dogs: everybody knows at this point that the Greens will always be sabotaged by writers, even in their already few victories. I guess that when one is ff writer or reader, one sees right through other people's creative choices and detects reasons/impacts/intentions more easily. That's what I feel with hotd, after years writing as a hobby such "automatic analysis" it's habit atp, I feel Team Green as the cornered rats of a japanese old saying: the cornered rat will bite the cat. The more they're sabotaged by the writers, the more I'll like them. Dorne also has always been seen as weak, a dying land taken by rhoynar immigrants, but yeah, they were the only ones to repel Targaryens and their dragons. They were also seen as losing dogs when actually they're incredibly badass.
2-Dorne is a much, much, and I say, MUCH better version of the Dance of the dragons, without dragons! How is that possible?!
-Arianne Martell is ASOIAF's version of Rhaenyra, but ofc, a way better version of her. She's cunning, resourceful, her "my father doesn't love meeeeeh, my birthright is threateneeeed" convictions are hard to change, she wants to prove herself, she has quite a lot of connections, she resorts to seduction and manipulation if needed to convice people to join her crazy plans, but at the same time, she worries about them if things go wrong, which means she's aware of her actions/choices and how it impacts others, and when Doran finally tells her the truth, she stops acting like a spoiled brat and finally starts acting like what one expects of an heir. She's flawed, she's human, she wanted her father's approval like Aegon wanted his parents affection.
-Arys Oakheart was Myrcella's kingsguard and Arianne didn't hesitate to use him and bring him to her side (or try to), it reminds me of Cole and how he was also used and later discarded by hotd!Rhaenyra. Arianne at least had a masterplan in mind and it took half a year, Rhaenyra just wanted someone to play and forced herself on Cole. In the end, both knights spend their remaining days trying to make up for the vows that women lead them break: Arys protects the real Myrcella who is missing now, and Cole fiercely keeps fighting for his found family in the Dance. It is said that both die deaths without honor, but what do we mean with "without honor"? Imo, from the moment you have a clear purpose in mind, a reason to fight, a reason to die for, it is not an honorless death/fight anymore. If "death with honor" to you means only "death by dragonfire" than yeah, their deaths were bland and honorless. But both knew what they were getting into, and accepted death anyway for the sake of their causes/reasons.
-Oberyn is quite a comparison to Daemon: there's a moment when Oberyn beds the paramour of an Yronwood guy. And to make things worse, he kills the man in a duel "by accident" :D Oberyn ends up exiled in the free cities and when he returns, it's to avenge Elia and her children. Uncles, always chaotic uncles, and iirc Arianne also found uncle Oberyn attractive :D
-Quentyn is a parallel for Aegon: as result of Oberyn's deeds, House Martell was kindly forced to send Quentyn to be fostered by the Yronwoods (You have to send your elder son to be fostered by an andal house. which happens to be the biggest rival of your house.. maan, huge seed for dance here). In other words he's a hostage, but Quentyn even considers Anders Yronwoods like a father, he's grown there after all. Like Aegon, he doesn't want to be the Prince of Dorne like Arianne thinks he wants. He wants a lot of things, but to rule is not one of these things. And when he's sent to find Daenerys, she isn't in Meereen anymore, but just like Aegon who wanted to prove himself, he tries to tame a dragon so he wouldn't return empty-handed. It is said that Quentyn didn't survive, but if we consider how Aegon II was hard to kill, certainly Quentyn is also alive. Burnt, but alive. I don't remember which dragon he tried to tame before, but it would be nice if he came back with Viserion, his cream colors and clingy behavior would be a nice parallel to Sunfyre and Aegon.
-Other interesting aspect is how Arianne claims that Anders Yronwood is Criston Cole reborn and he'll help Quentyn usurp her birthright just because. But guess what, the name of one of her chapters is essentially the same as Criston's (Queenmaker/Kingmaker), and she is the one who tries to crown Myrcella. We know almost nothing about Anders, so it's hard to judge his character based solelly on Arianne's or 'Quentyn's opinion. Regardless, it shows how Arianne is aware of History, and how she thinks things happen again and again.
-It's also interesting to compare Daemon-Viserys, and Oberyn-Doran. Daemon and Oberyn are both seen as the dangerous elements of the House, while Viserys and Doran the weaklings. Doran, however, is waaay smarter and resourceful than Viserys, Viserys was too dumb for his own good, he didn't know how to play the game. Doran does know, and that's why he's also dangerous: if you're strong, feign weakness. Sometimes I even think that Doran rhymes more with Otto because of that.
-Arianne's trip to honor the marriage pact and meet fAegon rhymes a bit with Rhaenyra's travel to find a husband. In hotd Rhaenyra ignores all the suitors and gets stuck with Laenor. I imagine the same will happen with Arianne and after getting all the infos she needs from fAegon and the golden company, she turns fAegon down.
And most importantly:
1-Feminine empowerment...: do we have feminine empowerment outside Dorne? We do, all female characters play the game of thrones the best they can. But in terms of western concept of empowerment and freedom, Dorne is considered one of the main elements of femininere presentation in ASOIAF. It's also no secret that Targaryens/Valyrians have g3nocid3d rhoynars and their customs in the past. Watching how Rhaenyra struggles for the implementation of the rhoynar custom of primogeniture that her ancestors had helped destroy for centuries in Essos screams "Karma" and I love it. You're the good deeds and the bad deeds of your ancestors, you can't choose. You'll inherit their rights, but also their duties and misdeeds.
These parallels have contributed a lot to the way I consume hotd, because really, I can't, it's hard to take hotd!Rhaenyra's attempts of feminine empowerment seriously no matter how much Condal and Hess force me to believe that Rhaenyra is a compeling character with a total valid reason that justifies her santity and her "call to adventure" as valyrian savior of Westeros.
And it's a shame, because I see how much effort is put on this show.. not much in terms of writing ofc, but as for the rest? Nothing less than stelar.
Anyway, as usual, Team Green is doing great with the few glories they are allowed to have and I'm sure the actors will keep doing a great job. Condal, Hess, directors: let the actors work, they can capture nuances that could save the writing just like our brilliant Diana Riggs (RIP) had done with Lady Olenna in GOT's last seasons. Just saying.

The Veiled Law of Affection- Chapter 6

had the day off so I popped out another one for you :)
The Veiled Law of Affection-Chapter 6
Word Count: 6358
Casey Novak x Olivia Benson
by PKJ @novaksupremacy
Based on the events surrounding S5 E24 "Poison", little bit of smut, lots of mushy angsty schtuff, sibling arguments, one of my favorite Casey episodes.
Read Part 5
“Look you’re making a mistake!” The woman shouted in the interrogation room. As it stood, she was accused of poisoning her adopted daughter. They had learned from her other little girl that she made the poor child stand in the corner with a sponge full of detergent in her mouth. As if that wasn’t bad enough the girl’s hospital visit was delayed by hours, causing sever detriment from the poisoning. Her husband’s sister had also spoken to Benson and Stabler about the many red flags pertaining to her parenting skills.
“Not according to your sister-in-law,” Olivia barked.
The woman scoffed, “Wendy never liked me you can’t listen to her!”
Elliot raised his voice, “Can we listen to your other daughter, Katie, Mrs. Campbell?”
Her attorney Gates laughed, “Sure, because seven-year-olds are so reliable. Tomorrow, she’ll tell you a pony with wings lives in her closet.”
Stabler was fuming at this point, “So Katie made the whole thing up, right? How you shoved a sponge of soapy water into Alexis’ mouth while she gagged and cried! Made her stand in a corner, counting, until she collapsed!”
“I feel terrible that I wasn’t paying close enough attention!” Karen Campbell started shouting, “But I can’t possibly be everywhere at once! I have FOUR children! I am a good mother!
Munch and Fin had Mr. Campbell in the other interrogation room at the same time.
“Why don’t you believe me?” the man leaned against the window, arms folded.
“We do, that’s why you’re not under arrest Munch said flatly.
“My wife did nothing wrong!”
“You couldn’t know what your wife did. You were gone all day.” Fin said more questioning than matter of fact.
“I told you when I got home Alexis had stopped breathing and Karen was hysterical. If we wanted to poison Alexis, what would we bring her to the hospital at all?”
John snapped at him, “Actually I’m more interested in why your wife does the things she does. Like berate and emotionally abuse your adopted daughter.”
“That’s a lie!”
“You callin’ your sister a liar? She says Karen treats that girl worse than a dog!” Fin retorted.
As Liv and Elliot came out of the interrogation room, they found Agent Huang and Casey waiting for them in the bullpen.
“The emergency room said they pumped two cups of detergent out of Alexis’ stomach.” Huang stated as they walked up.
Elliot shook his head in disgust, “Mrs. Campbells accident story is a bunch of crap! No kid is gonna drink two cups of that stuff willingly.”
“What about the dear old dad?” Liv interjected. “He had to know that his wife hated that kid.”
Casey sighed, “he wasn’t home so criminally he’s not responsible.”
“We got the mother right?” Elliot asked, agitated by the situation.
“How’s the seven-year-old?” The redhead questioned, she knew Elliot was good at his job, but she still had to do hers.
“Solid.”
“No chance you influenced her statement?” She didn’t want to ask but she had to.
“None, counselor. I’ve been doing this a little bit longer than you,” the detective said back his tone less then amiable.
Casey tilted her head, she hated that El took things so personally. “Just making sure we’re covered, children under nine aren’t automatically swearable.”
“I can talk to her,” Huang offered, “If she knows the difference between a lie and the truth then she can testify.” Casey nodded as a show of gratitude.
“Hey Detective Benson, while you’re waiting, I have some paperwork for you in my office that I’ve been meaning to give you.” Casey tossed out nonchalantly.
“Sure, I’ve got a few minutes.” Liv nodded, her hands in her pockets. “After you Counselor.”
The brunette tailed on the heels of the ADA as they headed down the hall. Huang couldn’t help but snicker as they walked away. “It’s ridiculous that they’re still making excuses at this point. We pretty much all know what that was about.”
“Guess Daddy wants a little midnight snack, you know what I’m sayin’?” Fin nudged the FBI agent in his rib.
Elliot snorted into his coffee, “What?” He laughed so hard he choked on some of the hot liquid. “Who wants a what?”
Fin was laughing “Oh you haven’t had the pleasure of hearing that exchange yet? Imma let you experience that on ya own.”
Munch walked over with a cup of coffee in his hand, “What, what’s so funny what did I miss?” Everyone just shook their heads and assure him it was nothing. “You know this doesn’t make me believe in the conspiracy that everyone’s working against me, any less. If anything, you, you’re just adding fuel to the fire.”
Casey shut the door to her office and locked it, closing the blinds tight.
Liv rubbed her eyes, “Case, I gotta tell you baby, I’m exhausted.”
“I know,” Casey kissed her gently and rubbed her shoulders then steered the detective towards the couch. “I figured my couch was more comfortable than the crib.” She kicked off her heeled boots and made room for Liv to come join her. “Plus, this way I get to hold you, and the door is locked so you won’t get startled.”
Liv crawled over her girlfriend and wedged herself between her and the back of the couch, wrapping her arm and leg around her, squeezing tight. She was exhausted, they had been up since the night before with this case, but Captain wasn’t letting anyone go home until they made some headway on this. Casey reached over the brunette and pulled the blanket down off the back of the couch and covered them with it. She laid soft strokes up and down Liv’s arm with the tips of fingers and pressed her lips to her forehead and held them there for a moment before she kissed lightly and then pressed her cheek against the side of the detectives head and pulled her close. She could feel Liv’s breathing shift indicating that she had fallen asleep. The attorney watched her girlfriend’s chest rise and fall, she looked so peaceful.
“I love you, Olivia.” Casey whispered and kissed her head again. “I wish I could tell you.” Every second spent with Olivia was the happiest moment of her life, even when it wasn’t. Even when it was sad, or upsetting, or the case was spiraling out of control, all she had to do was look at Liv and feel at ease. That was the first time she ever said it out loud, not that her lover heard her. She wouldn’t dare say it then. Everything was going so good, she didn’t want to fuck it up. She dozed off alongside the brunette detective.
Casey stirred about an hour later to Liv kissing her neck. She grinned and stretched, giving the detective more access to her neck. “Mmm I should let you nap in my office more often.”
“Mmm, yes, very refreshing. Better than a cup of coffee.” The brunette smiled as she planted a long tender kiss on her girlfriend.
Casey brought her hand up to cup Liv’s face and deepened the kiss. She let out a sigh as she felt the detective slip her hand down below her waistline. “Babe.” A smile that could only be described as one of pleasure creeped across her face, “we can’t.” The redhead let out another soft sigh and a light moan as Liv continued to tease her. She grabbed her lover’s wrist and looked her square in the eye, “I need you to either fuck me right now or stop what you’re doing.”
“Gladly,” the detective hummed and pulled the ADA underneath her.
Casey sat up on couch and slid her boots back on as she watched Olivia tighten her belt and adjust her watch.
“What?” Liv looked up as she was fastening her sleeve buttons, “Did I miss a belt loop or something?” She looked down.
The younger woman shook her head, her cheeks getting red, even still Liv gave her butterflies. “No,” she said breathlessly, “you’re just beautiful.”
The brunette leaned over Casey on the couch and kissed her, biting her lip softly before pulling back to meet her gaze, “You’ve pretty stunning yourself, Counselor.” She lingered for a minute before heading towards the door, looking back at her girlfriend one last time before turning the handle. The detective continued to fumble with the buttons on her shirt as she walked out almost walking straight into Munch.
“Olivia,” the startled detective smiled, “what happened spilled something on your shirt?”
Realizing she was still half unbuttoned pulled her shirt closed with her fist, “Uhm yea, something like that. I got it out though.” Liv shifted nervously, “Going see Casey? I gotta get back to work.” She motioned the thumb of her free hand back towards her desk.
“Be careful, Detective. The coffee machine’s on the fritz and looks like your shirt can’t take another hit.” He called out, pointing with the folder in his hand as Liv kept walking. He knocked on the ADAs door.
“Come in,” Casey called out, “Hey John!” she smiled as he walked through the door, “what’ve you got?”
“Hey Casey, I just have Huang’s report for you to file before you go to the judge.” Munch walked forward and handed her the file. “Ouch, counselor I don’t think the vanity is worth it. Besides your hair looks nice curly. Platonically speaking of course—you’re not my type.” He straightened his tie.
The redhead looked at him baffled, “John, I’m not following.” She chuckled. “Did you break into the evidence locker?”
“Oh,” he waved his hand at her and then motioned to his own neck, “the burn, from your straightener. Looks like it hurts.”
Casey clasped her hand over her neck and leaned on her elbow. “Huh, yeah, well you know. Lack of sleep.” She chuckled nervously.
“Do me a favor, don’t operate any heavy machinery.” Munch gave a mock salute and walked out.
“I deserved that,” Casey muttered under her breath after he left, “payback is a girlfriend with a hickey.”
*******
“Their seven-year-old daughter? That sounds a bit imprudent.” Judge Taft said as Casey and Gates followed him down the hall.
“Rittenhouse v. North Hempstead found a three-year-old wasn’t automatically presumed incompetent to testify.” Casey argued.
“Ah, but you’re in my court now.” Taft’s voice dripping with self-importance.
“And another case disqualified a seven-year-old witness. It’s completely subjective.” Quipped Gates.
“Which is why,” Casey was growing impatient, “a psychiatrist examined Katie Campbell and that she understands her duty to tell the truth.”
“I’m sure the people won't mind if I determine that myself.” Taft stated, his grin was sickening.
“That’s not necessary Your Honor.” The ADA shook her head, assuring her the proper procedure had been followed.
“But again, it’s in my court.”
*******
Olivia stood over the stove stirring the cast iron while Casey stood at the counter furiously chopping up a bell pepper.
“And then, THEN,” she was practically slamming the knife against the cutting board, “he told me that I needed to dress appropriately.” She stopped chopping and turned towards her girlfriend.
Liv stopped stirring and turned to look at her girlfriend up and down. “What do you mean appropriately? That suit is perfectly tailored?”
He said, “By appropriately, I mean in a skirt.” She was swinging her chopping hand as she spoke.
“Woah, woah, why don’t we put that down.” She carefully clasped the redhead’s wrist between her hands and slid the knife away from Casey as if she were disarming a suspect.
“Sorry, that’s probably best. I might hurt myself, you know like how I burned myself with my straightener this morning?” her tone shifted to mockingly accusatory and flipped her hair away from her shoulder.
The brunette gasped, “Jesus baby I’m sorry! I didn’t think it would be that bad, I was just trying to get you back for the one you gave me the day of that softball game.” She chuckled.
Casey mocked her laugh making a goofy face at her. “Hilarious babe,” she tossed a mushroom at her, “Especially when I had to have it pointed out by Munch! Who by the way is the only one still in the dark about us, totally clueless.”
The detective wrapped her arms around her girlfriend’s waist and leaned into her propping her head up on her shoulder. “I’m sorry Taft is being such a misogynist,” she tightened her hold, “You’re gonna kick ass in court.” She kissed her neck.
“Ahh, hey!” the redhead swatted playfully at her and pulled her head to the side, “You’ve done enough damage for one day, Detective.” She giggled and leaned her head back to kiss Liv enthusiastically.
*******
“Its open!” Casey called out, pouring more whiskey into her glass as Liv walked in the door.
“Swearability hearing went that badly huh?” the detective furrowed her brow, worried to find her girlfriend drinking alone on the couch.
“Worse. He basically told me I embarrassed myself and shouldn’t brag about my lack of intellect.” The redhead put the bottle down and waved her hand in its general direction, “Don’t worry I don’t plan on making a habit out of it.”
The brunette dropped the takeout down on the counter and dropped down next to Casey on the couch, “Well that’s a relief.” She motioned for Casey to swing her legs up over her. She slid the redheads boots off and dropped them to the floor. “Still, I’m sorry that he’s being such an ass.” Liv started to massage the counselor’s feet. “Elliot told me he’s gotta testify that he didn’t coerce her.”
The ADA took a swig of her drink and threw her head back, “Uggh Liv, why are you so good at that?”
The brunette grinned, “I’m just, good with my hands.”
Casey quirked her brow, letting out a low moan, “Mmm, that you are Detective, that you are.” She opened one eye to look at her girlfriend who was looking at her adoringly, “I see the way you’re looking at me.” She closed her eyes again.
“Oh yeah and how’s that?” Liv chuckled, continuing to massage, working out a particularly difficult knot.
The redhead smacked the couch and let out a moan, “Ohhhh, G-d that feels good. You’re spoiling me.” She peaked her eye open again, “And you’re looking at me the way you look at a container of honey chicken, hungry.”
“Is that so?” The brunette smirked, “I mean cause I have honey chicken over there on the counter…”
“You could have me on the counter,” Casey bit her lip.
“Why would I do that,” Liv paused, the ADA picked her head up, the brunette was waiting for her shocked reaction before continuing, “when I can have you right here on the sofa.” She got a good grip on her thighs and pulled Casey down the couch to her.
Casey squealed, “Babe, my drink!” she quickly dropped the glass to the coffee table, laughing. The detective was already pulling the attorney’s jeans down around her ankles and tossing them in the corner next to a pile of law journals.
The brunette pulled Casey up to her to kiss her longingly, she could taste the whiskey on her tongue mixed with desire. The redhead moaned and then broke the kiss to catch her breath. “You kill me detective,” her eyes glistened, staring into Liv’s. She pressed a light kiss to her lips, “little deaths.” She sighed. She kissed her hard, running her fingers down the side of the brunette’s face. She allowed herself to fall back onto the couch pulling the cop down on top her, unbuttoning Liv’s shirt button by button.
*******
Elliot sat in the witness box during the Hudy hearing ordered by Judge Taft. He swore that there was no influence on Katie’s statement and that the girl introduced her mother to the conversation without any prompting. Gates accused him of having a vendetta against Karen Campbell for comments taken out context. Upon stepping down from the witness box, Elliot started to walk away as Taft went ahead and ruled the testimony inadmissible.
“This is a joke,” Elliot scoffed as he headed towards the back of the courtroom.
“I beg your pardon, Detective Stabler,” Taft asked sternly?
“I said this is a joke!” The detective turned back towards the judge.
“You’d be wise to remember no one cares what you think, once you leave that box.” Taft’s words fell pointedly.
“That interview wasn’t suggestive,” Elliot muttered walking back towards the bench.
“Elliot, stop.” Casey raised her voice.
He continued, “You’re just one of these judges that think cops strong arm witnesses just to make a case. What you think I just bullied a seven-year-old into lying?” He turned to walk away again.
“Elliot, leave!” Casey commanded, she was trying to protect him and not blow her case at the same time.
“No Elliot stay,” Taft scoffed, “You’re in contempt.”
Casey went down to the holding cells to check on her friend, “You alright?”
“Yeah great, thanks for getting me a couple hours off.” He said sarcastically.
The redhead laughed incredulously, “You are not blaming this on me.”
“Well, you did let that defense attorney trash me pretty good in court.”
The ADA threw her hand up in protest, “Yeah and that stunt you pulled. That’s gonna ensure Taft screws me at trial but hey at least you still have your ego, right?”
“You bail me out to talk about my ego?” the detective quipped back at her.
“I did not get you out of there!” Casey rolled her eyes.
“I called in a favor,” Mary Clark stared at the two of them, arms folded, “The contempt citation is withdrawn. So, if you could possibly stop acting like a petulant child.” She turned her attention to the young attorney, “And you, you need to start playing nice with Oliver Taft.”
Stabler looked back at Casey, “And you’re worried about my ego. This guy abuses his power and gets away with it.”
Mary cut him off, “You didn’t help anybody by mouthing off to the trial judge.” She looked back at her protégé, “This isn’t law school Casey, pick your battles. Winning is more important than wearing a skirt.”
*******
Liv and Casey were lying in bed, the redhead snuggled up in the detective’s arms, staring out into space. The brunette stroked her back, “I can’t believe you asked Taft to recuse himself.”
“I really fucked myself this time I think.” The anxiety in Casey’s voice was clear. “Why did I do that?”
“Baby, you did it because you knew it was the right thing. That judge is never going to be impartial and was never going to get justice for that little girl.”
“He still won’t,” Casey sat up, crossing her legs, and facing her girlfriend. “All I’ve done is ensure that he hates me and will do everything to make sure that I have a hard time prosecuting this case.”
“What did Mary say?”
The redhead sighed, “She said I was insane for asking an ego maniac to recuse himself and all I did was make myself an enemy.”
“What are you gonna do?” Liv followed suit and sat up, taking the ADAs hand to comfort her, “It’s not like you can get him thrown off the bench.”
“Maybe I can…”
******
Elliot chased Casey down as she headed to court, “Hey I think I’ve got something that even Taft can’t ignore.”
She furrowed her brow at him, “What is it?”
“The records from the adoption agency the Campbells used. They tried to give Alexis back.”
The redhead nearly fell out, “What? When?”
“February of this year, only 6 months after her adoption. Wouldn’t hurt her my ass, that’s such bull.”
The ADA smirked knowing Elliot may have found her a smoking gun.
*****
It was no use even with the mountain of evidence, Taft’s bias completely controlled the courtroom as he acquitted Karen Campbell. Casey felt so defeated as she walked out of the courthouse, if it was a fair fight, maybe she would’ve felt better about losing. She walked over to Elliot.
“I’m sorry,” she frowned and tapped him with her briefcase.
“Don’t be, I know you went to the mat on this one. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out.” His hands shoved deep into the pockets of his trench coat.
“I want Taft off the bench.” She looked Elliot square in the eye.
Elliot ran his hand down her arm, “and I want a ’65 stingray.” He said consolingly.
“I’m serious,” she said as the detective had turned to walk away, “I’m going after him.”
“Casey,” he exhaled, “It’s not worth it, what good does it do, to kill your career?”
“If this is justice, I don’t want this career.”
The detective looked at her concerned, “I’m just worried about you putting yourself in a bad position, I’d hate to see you get dragged down because of this bastard.” He grinned, “Besides who’s going to play softball with me when they fire your ass.” He punched her arm playfully.
*****
Liv was zoned out at her desk working on DD-5s, the background noise of Munch spewing conspiracies at Fin and Cragen practically lulling her to sleep. She was nodding off halfway through a sentence when she felt a presence next to her desk, “Elliot for the last time I do not want a dirty water dog for lunch today.”
“I’m not gonna ask why Elliot has asked you that more than once today.” Casey joked.
The detective’s ears perked up and she leaned her head to the side, looking at the tall, gorgeous litigator leaning up against her desk. “Hey Da—DA Novak. ADA Casey. Hey Casey, what’s up?” Liv was about twenty shades of blushing after almost letting that nickname slip at the office.
Casey leaned down, cleared her throat, and lowered her voice, “Daddy needs a favor.”
“What’s wrong, Case?” She could tell there was a sense of urgency in her girlfriend’s voice.
“I need you to help me talk to Cragen about reopening the Rosalind Silvo case. I know in my bones that there was bias on Judge Taft’s part and there was evidence to prove she was innocent…” the redhead pleaded.
“…But Taft wouldn’t pay for the test.”
“Exactly! If I can get Cragen to reopen the case, the DA’s office doesn’t have to go through the same channels, I can get permission to exhume the body, clear Silvo, and screw Taft to the wall.” Casey rambled, having to take a deep breath when she finally stopped speaking.
“Well, I would like to hope I’m the only person you’re screwing against the wall but let me see the case notes and then we can go talk to him together.” Olivia chuckled, waving her hand for Casey to show her the files.
Liv filled Elliot in and then the three of them brought it to Cragen’s attention, “Casey I’d love to help get an innocent woman out of prison, but I don’t have the manpower to fuel a vendetta.”
“Its not really that much work boss, I think we got it covered,”
Cragen shot him a look, “Well thank you for being such a real helper, Elliot.”
Casey pleaded, hoping her puppy eyes would work on Cragen the way they work on Liv and Elliot, “It’s two interviews, if nothing pans out, I swear I’ll drop it.”
*****
Liv walked out of the coffee shop and handed one to her girlfriend who was waiting for her on the sidewalk.
“Thanks. It was a little too crowded in there for me.” Casey reached over and interlinked her fingers with the brunette’s. Her hand was a shaking, not something she’d attempted to do in public before.
The detective tensed up, “Casey, what if someone sees us?”
“I’m not ashamed,” she stopped and pulled the brunette’s hand turning her to face her. “I’m proud to say I’m with you, Olivia Benson.”
Any fear Liv had at this point was washed away with Casey’s words and the adorable little dimples the redhead got when she smiled. She squeezed the attorney’s hand tighter and pulled her in close. “And I am all yours, Counselor. I wasn’t trying to hide you, I just want to keep you safe.”
Casey smirked and leaned in to kiss the brunette, “Maybe you’ve forgotten how good I am with a bat.” She turned and started to walk again, holding her girlfriend’s hand tight with one hand, and sipping her coffee with the other.
“You go talk to Mary, I’ll hang back here. I’m gonna check in with the house.” Liv stated as they got closer to the judge’s apartment. Casey nodded and started to walk away, the brunette pulling her back and into a quick kiss before letting her go. She wasn’t going to feel ashamed to show anyone how much Casey meant to her anymore. She watched as the redhead walked down the block and couldn’t help but stare at how good she looked in that outfit, how her hips swayed back and forth. She chewed on her lip and was startled by the phone ringing.
“Benson. Hey El I was just about to check in. Yeah, I’m good, I’m just waiting for Casey, she’s talking with Judge Clark.”
Judge Clark walked out of her apartment just to find Casey waiting for her. “I don’t know how I can be more clear,” she was sympathetic but not up for taking on Taft.
The ADA smirked, “Rosalin Silvo is innocent, here’s the M.E. report.” She handed Mary the file Olivia had gotten from Warner. “Taft let his bias run that courtroom, same crap he always does but this time, he stole a woman’s life.”
Mary scanned the report, her face dropped, and she looked up at Casey, “That son of a bitch. He’s an embarrassment to the bench.”
“I’ll worry about him as soon as I get Rosalin Silvo out of jail.”
*****
After hearing the evidence Judge Preston spoke, “I have to agree with counsel, the only possible remedy is to vacate Ms. Silvo’s conviction. We’re adjourned.” She stated with the bang of her gavel.
Rosalin, with tears of joy in her eyes, hugged Mary, and Casey, thanking them before hugging her other child tightly. The ADA and Judge Clark gathered up their things and headed for the door as Taft approached them.
“Well Judge Clark its good to see you haven’t lost sight of your humble beginnings as a legal aid attorney. Ms. Novak, are you going to be coming through all the decisions I’ve made.” He scoffed.
“That depends,” she started, “how many other defendant’s have you falsely convicted?”
“History is full of mistakes Ms. Novak, even your short history.” His tone was aggressive.
Mary stepped in between him and Casey. “You’re not threatening her, are you? Some people might consider that conduct unbecoming of an officer of the court. You can’t bully your way out of this Oliver.” She gave him a smug look knowing she could tear him down in an instant.
Casey did her best to hide her enjoyment of this exchange when her cellphone rang. “Casey Novak.” Her heart sank, “Oh G-d.”
*****
The ADA ran up to the scene as she approached the Campbell household. She stopped at the stairs as she saw the small body being carried out, covered in a white sheet. “Why wasn’t she in the hospital?” she demanded, her voice raw with emotion as her eyes met Elliot, who was exiting the building.
“Released.” He walked towards her, “Parent’s didn’t want her in a nursing home. The aunt dropped by, found Alexis in her bed already dead.” He paused for a second, “Casey,” he took a deep breath, “Karen was the only one home.”
“She finished the job.” Casey muttered as Olivia emerged from the doorway with Karen Campbell in cuffs, she was reading her, her Miranda rights as they walked past.
*****
“Hey, you okay?” Casey was leaning against the door of the call room.
“Hey babe, I’m fine. Is her lawyer here?” Liv lifted her head up.
“No, no not yet it’s okay lay back down.” The redhead walked over and laid down on the cot next to the detective. She pulled Liv’s arm tight around her.
“Baby, you okay?” Liv mumbled into Casey’s back. She was met with silent sobs causing Casey’s body to shake against her. The brunette lifted her head up, “Baby what is it?”
“This is my fault.”
“How could you possibly…”
“I should’ve fought harder to get Taft thrown off the case, off the bench, something! I should’ve done more.”
“Case, you are only one assistant district attorney, and while you are wonderful and gorgeous and intelligent, not to mention compassionate beyond rivaling— you are only one human being.”
Elliot rapped on the doorframe, “Hey guys, Gates is here, showtime.”
Casey wiped her tears and stood up straighten out her blazer and the three of them headed down to the interrogation room.
“What happened,” Elliot sat down and opened his notepad, “You miss us?”
“You can’t charge my client with murder for a crime she was already acquitted of.” Gates spouted, demanding the release of the client.
“Unless we’re talking about two separate acts, which we are. Right Karen?” Olivia stated closing the door behind her. “Alexis was suffocated, the poisoning had nothing to do with her death.”
Casey studied Gates face, he had no idea what his client had done. He was as shocked as they were.
“I didn’t want to bring her home. Pete insisted. She wouldn’t stop crying, I just wanted her to stop. It wasn’t my fault!
“What you gonna claim it was an accident again?” Elliot clapped back at her.
“No! The judge said I should do it.”
Casey tilted her head, “What Judge?”
“Judge Taft.” The ADA shot a look at Gates as Karen continued, “He said Alexis was too sick and I had other children to think about. He said we would all be better off if Alexis just died.”
Olivia looked at her girlfriend in disbelief.
“When did he say this to you?” the redhead pressed.
“The other day in court right before I testified.”
Gates jumped up, “Interview is over, everyone out.”
“What the hell was Taft doing talking to her anyway?” Elliot asked.
“Hanging himself,” Casey scoffed. “The bastard’s done now.”
“Doesn’t that nullify her acquittal,” Liv jumped in.
The redhead nodded, “Sure does not that it matters, we’ve got her on homicide.”
A few minutes later he met the ADA and the detectives outside the interview. “I just want you to know I had no knowledge of this ex-parte or as an officer of the court I would’ve been duty bound to tell you immediately.”
“What did he say?” Casey demanded.
“Apparently, he saw her crying and told her to think of her other kids and maybe they would be better off if Alexis died anyway and then he advised her to get psychiatric help so that this kind of thing wouldn’t happen again. Which I think is a fine idea.”
“Book her and go pick up Taft,” Casey stated as she gathered her things.
“On what grounds,” Cragen questioned.
“Criminal Facilitation Two. He told her to get a shrink which means he knew this was no accident and acquitting her gave her the means and opportunity to commit a Class A felony.”
“He has judicial immunity Casey,” Cragen spoke softly.
“He smoked his judicial immunity the minute he had an ex parte communication with the defendant.” The redhead said as she stormed out of the precinct.
*****
“I don’t think I’ve every been this nervous.” Casey said checking over her appearance in the mirror. “I cannot lose this case.”
Liv came up behind her and kissed her neck, “You’re gonna do great baby. C’mon,” she turned her around and straightened the lapel of her jacket, “Everyone knows my Daddy has the best conviction rate in town, and she isn’t scared of anyone, definitely not some old man named Oliver Taft.” She pulled her collar tight and kissed the redhead. “I know you’re already dressed but I think I know how to calm you down.” She smiled slyly.
“Mmm, do you now?” Casey raised her brow and bit her lip.
Liv nodded, sliding the redhead’s suit jacket off and placing it on the counter, “Mhmm yeah. Watch.” she said sliding her tongue into her mouth.
The attorney enthralled in the kiss grabbed for her girlfriend’s belt buckle fumbling to get it undone and get Liv’s fly down. She slid her hand down into the brunette’s waistband as her lover had moved on to kissing down her pulse points. Casey felt how wet Olivia already was and let out a sultry giggle, “Mmm, I’m starting to think I just keep you like this twenty-four/seven. Let Daddy fix it.” She moaned sliding a finger in and pressing her palm to Liv’s clit.
The detective fumbled with Casey’s suit pants as she let out little whimpers which Casey swallowed, kissing her hard. Finally getting them undone, the attorney used her freehand to grab her girlfriends wrist and pull it to her, sliding it down into her boxers. Liv glided two fingers into Casey’s soaked center and thrust her back against the counter.
The ADA threw her head back, “Oh god Olivia! Fuck” she slipped another finger into the detective. The two of them mewling and whimpering as they continued toying with each other’s g-spots. They knew each other’s body’s like clockwork, enough to make it last for hours or make the other cum instantly. Their breath hitching and growing ragged they both knew what was coming next and let go, collapsing against each other and back against the counter.
Casey held Liv’s head against her shoulder and kissed her temple, both of them out of breath. “You make the prettiest noises when I fuck you.”
******
As they arrived at the courthouse Casey was much more relaxed. She was hurriedly headed towards the courtroom when she heard someone call out to her.
“Hey Novak! Catch.” She turned around to see Elliot lob something in her direction. She caught it one handed and looked at it.
“What’s this for?” she said quizzingly.
“It’s cologne Case, you smell like sex. Keep it,” he headed in, “Knock em dead!”
As the trial proceeded the prosecution called Taft as their first witness.
“Is that why you spoke to Karen during her trial, because you thought she was innocent.” The ADA asked casually.
Taft paused for a second and took a deep breath, “I admit the conversation was ill-advised. We were in the same elevator, she was distraught. I allowed my empathy to overrule my intellect.” Elliot rolled his eyes from the gallery as Taft spoke.
“Did it every occur to you that Karen Campbell might be responsible for her daughters condition?” Casey continued.
“I must object, Your Honor.” Taft argued.
“You felt sorry for the defendant, so you must’ve already decided she was innocent even though the trial had not concluded yet.”
“I had formed no opinion,” Taft retorted, “as you just said the trial had not yet concluded.”
“I know,” the redhead swung her hand as she walked over to the jury box. “Which is why it was so strange that you were talking to her. Why did you tell the defendant to quote seek psychiatric help, so this tragedy doesn’t occur again.”
“She was upset,” the judge answered.
“Because it sounds like you really did think she poisoned her daughter.” Casey was getting louder, more adamant in how she spoke.
“It was a mistake, is that what you want me to say Ms. Novak? One mistake in almost three decades?”
Casey sneered, “Didn’t you make an arguably bigger mistake? When you wrongfully convicted Rosalin Silvo of murdering her daughter and sent her to prison for ten years?” The ADA was shouting at this point.
“That is completely immaterial,” The Judge argued.
The redhead stepped to him, “You can’t object Judge Taft.”
“But I can Ms. Novak,” Judge Bradley warned.
“Did you tell Karen Campbell to suffocate her daughter?” Casey walked back towards the jury.
“No.”
“But you talked to her even though it was clearly improper,”
“It was a mistake!”
“You don’t make mistakes, you make judgements, who’s innocent, who’s guilty. You saw Rosalin Silvo and she was a whore. That means she’s a bad mother. And then you saw Karen Campbell. Why did you talk to her Judge?” Casey was furious at this point.
“Your Honor!?” Taft turned towards Judge Bradley.
“Why talk to her? Why talk to Karen Campbell?” the young fiery attorney pressed as Taft stood up in the witness box. “Why talk to a woman who tried to murder her daughter?”
“I didn’t know!”
“Didn’t know what?” Casey shouted, “That she’d turn around and try to do it again.”
“I THOUGHT THEY WERE GOOD PEOPLE” Taft bellowed at Casey.
Judge Bradley banged his gavel, “That’s enough!”
“Nothing further,” the redhead’s lip curled as she walked away.
It didn’t take the Jury long to come back with a guilty verdict. The press was outside waiting for Taft as both Elliot and Casey watched satisfied from afar. He had been demoted before he even left the courtroom. The detective nudged the ADA, “You did good Case.” She nudged him back and smiled.
*****
“It’s open,” Casey said as she heard her girlfriend approach the door. She was sitting at the counter. “Hey beautiful.”
Liv walked over and planted a longing kiss on the redhead.
“Mmm,” Casey couldn’t help but smile at the brunette’s touch. “I have something for you.”
“You do?” The detective asked, “What is it? Something sexy?”
Casey giggled, “I hope you think so.” She looked up at Liv, “so you know how you always say how unsafe it is for me to leave my door unlocked when waiting for you? I think I’ve found a solution.” She slid her hand across the counter towards her girlfriend and lifted it away revealing a singular house key. “What do you think?”

I see tons of fairly new cars at night with no tail lights, but headlights are on. Is this some new so-called feature? The drivers seem oblivious to the fact that their tail lights are off.
The phenomenon you're observing—newer cars driving at night with headlights on but no tail lights illuminated—is not a deliberate feature but rather a dangerous oversight caused by design flaws, driver complacency, and regulatory gaps. Here's a detailed breakdown:
1. Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) Misuse
What's Happening: Many modern cars have bright DRLs that automatically activate when the engine starts. These lights only illuminate the front of the vehicle (not tail lights) and are designed for daytime visibility. • Driver Error: At night, drivers assume their full lighting system is active because they see the DRLs and a backlit dashboard, unaware that tail/parking lights remain off. • Example: In the EU, DRLs are mandatory on cars post-2011, but rear lights aren’t required to activate with them.
2. Automatic Lighting System Failures
Intended Function: Automatic headlights should activate in low-light conditions, turning on both headlights and tail lights. • Common Pitfalls: ◦ Sensors may fail to detect dusk/dawn or overcast conditions. ◦ Drivers override the "Auto" setting (e.g., for car washes) and forget to reset it. ◦ Systems don’t link to wipers in all models (e.g., lights stay off in rain unless manually activated).
3. Dashboard Design Flaws
Always-Illuminated Displays: Modern digital dashboards remain lit regardless of exterior lighting conditions, removing the visual cue (a dark dashboard) that reminds drivers to turn on lights. • Toyota/Honda Example: Some models with "Optitron" instrument clusters have been criticized for this issue.
4. Regulatory and Industry Shortcomings
Outdated Standards: • U.S. regulations don’t mandate automatic headlights, unlike the EU’s 2025 requirement for auto-on lights. • DRL brightness isn’t standardized globally, leading to front lights that mimic low beams.
Manufacturer Choices: Some automakers (e.g., BMW, Volvo) program DRLs to activate rear lights, but this isn’t universal.
5. Solutions and Safety Implications
For Drivers: • Manually verify tail lights are on by checking reflections (e.g., in store windows) or asking a passenger. • Enable automatic headlights and ensure they’re linked to wipers.
For Regulators: • Mandate auto-on lights that activate both front and rear lights in low-light conditions. • Require dashboard dimming when exterior lights are off.
For Manufacturers: • Adopt "always-on" rear lights with DRLs (as seen in some Volvos). • Add dashboard warnings for inactive tail lights.
Why This Matters Driving without tail lights increases collision risks by 40% in low-visibility conditions. Other drivers can’t judge your speed, distance, or braking intentions, leading to rear-end crashes or underride accidents with trucks.
While not a "feature," this issue highlights how partial automation (e.g., DRLs, auto-dashlights) can create unintended safety gaps. Until regulations catch up, drivers must stay vigilant.
For further details, see discussions on automatic lighting flaws, DRL limitations, and collision risks.

Day 63, September 15, Sunday - All the major headlines are reporting on Mayor Rogers cracking down on Freeburg P.D. and being responsible for its "breakdown". This is just the day after the death of Officer Kin Tsubaki (which was covered up) and 2 failed calls. I don't know what they are talking about, unless they're counting Jack not using force at the LGB protest as well.
Amongst the morning papers we get a little note with the symbol of Robespierre aka Eugene Chaffee on the front and a cryptic message inside that reads: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do". The note also reports that we have bad relations with City Hall with 3 thumbs down, but we are in good with the Mafia (3 thumbs up). Jack's relationship with his officers at the Police Station however, is a mystery. Looks like we need to plant a mole to read the room at Freeburg P.D.
Today is the 3rd consecutive day where we have to deal with a couple of tired officers. And in Officer Ozaki's case, a drunk officer. So we let them all have time-off, minding today's workforce roster of course.
Mayor Rogers is unhappy with Jack's performance and decides to penalize us and cut the Freeburg P.D.'s budget slightly by taking away 1 job slot, forcing us to fire someone on our force. We have no choice but to give Detective Nick Hunter (130), who was previously hired by Deputy Stett when Jack was in a coma, the boot.
Next on the agenda is to interrogate and make an informant of Henry Sand, the Sands Lieutenant we arrested 2 days ago. He has a defective heart valve and wears a pacemaker in his chest. His daughter Mary Ann is a successful ballerina and his pride and joy. However, a past accident of driving into the river caused him to develop aquaphobia.
Our interrogation session saw us trying to sympathise with his hatred for John Pazzi as well as intimidation with our knowledge that he works for the Mafia. However, these lines of questioning proved unsuccessful in breaking him as he repeatedly requested speaking to his lawyer. So we begin torturing him by waterboarding him in a barrel. After 2 dunks in the barrel, soon enough he lets on that George Sand stole some antique guns and pocketed the money.
We start investigating George Sand, the second from the bottom in the Sands hierarchy. George is apparently responsible for "Theft" at the Freeburg Central Railway Station where he stole rare Second World War weapons from the station warehouse. We put Detective Akers as Lead, with Detectives Jackson and Luckett supporting.
Our cut from the sale of Automatic Weapons came in from the Mafia and we decide to share 50% with our staff to make them happy.
Meanwhile, we still have 1 Detective job slot open, so we hire Detective Jim Kang (120) for Shift A to replace Detective Hunter.
Today is the day we Hire a Snitch to gather intel and give us a feel of the situation in Freeburg P.D. The price to hire is $3000 upfront, and then $500 per week to keep the snitch in our books. So who became our Snitch? Why, none other than Officer Salik Persy (130) the nepo-baby whom we can't fire. He has been with the department for 48 days since July 30, and has been on several small assignments usually accompanied by a more professional officer, just like today's 1st call of "Disorderly Conduct" in the City Center.
At mid-day, a call came in regarding a "Theft" situation in the Suburbs where Veronica had just hosted her friend Clara at her house. Clara suggested they try on Veronica's jewellery for fun, and apparently returned all of them when she was done. When Clara went home, Veronica checked and found 4 rings missing. We ordered Officers Robbins, Syahovich and Yorgenson to pay a visit to Clara's residence where Clara behaved oddly. But after interrogating her and her husband over tea, our team recovered some jewellery which Jack decides to sell to the Mafia.
Speaking of jewellery, Christopher Sand calls in his favour with Jack to not send any officers to the Sardius Jewellery Store at 7pm today. In exchange, he will offer Jack $1000.
The heist at the Sardius Jewellery Store had yet to go down and we have yet to receive the call, when we get a threatening message from Christopher Sand about Jack letting him down. I don't know if this is a bug, but if we're down a point with the Mafia we gotta earn it back before it dips even more.
Another false alarm for a "Suicide Threat" at the Sophocles Theatre of Drama where the rejected young dancer had simply fallen asleep in her locked dressing room.
To be continued...

It's especially interested how bad the Minecraft movie feels when you compare it to other video game movies nowadays.
Like. For example, the Mario movie in concept was simple. Adapt the basic structure of what a Mario platformer is (person gets kidnapped and Mario saves them) with Mario's alternate backstory of being from Brooklyn as an excuse to make him an easier viewpoint character. And Super Mario is THE video game franchise so it's an easy money grab.
Except they didn't make an easy money grab. They made a kid's movie that respected the kids who play the games, they made references to the games and incorporated them into the movie in a way that enhanced the story, and they did this while still understanding the spirit of the franchise.
Mario and DK being rivals but still coming together to fight a greater evil. The Bros.' relationship being the emotional core of the movie. Bowser being portrayed perfectly as a goofy yet still threatening villain. They even incorporated Mario Kart into the story without it feeling tacked on. They took the world of Mario seriously and treated it with respect - they made a world that's goofy and charming but still lived-in, without making it edgy or "realistic" just to "appeal" to adults.
Most people apologising to Minecraft Story Mode are probably doing it as a joke, but like. They already understood this and worked through it. Even in the first game which features a grand adventure, the adventurers are people from the world of Minecraft, and the epic invasion was a horror unleashed by accident, like the Wither it's based on.
Later episodes and seasons play more into the inherent fantastical elements of Minecraft, with the Far Lands and the End as eldritch, alien places. They also reference the community aspects of Minecraft: power-hungry server admins, fan-created games like Spleef, fantastical redstone contraptions, even the Minecraft YouTuber murder mystery.
And even being a movie instead of an episodic game isn't an automatic death sentence - hell, if you really wanted to stick to the base game of Minecraft, you could showcase the joy of exploration that is a much more common and more core experience than big epic boss fights.
That moment in the trailer, where there's a log floating in the broken tree and the boy reaches out for it? The one at the start where they're looking around at the world and the camera lets us see the surroundings? Those are great moments, because that's how it feels to play Minecraft. I've seen and heard kids play the game, I know that's still how they experience it. If you're going to make it into an epic, make it into an epic journey and show off the world. The vistas we've seen do genuinely look gorgeous, like someone transplanted
Even the visual design plays into this. The weirdly realistic mobs Detective Pikachu/Sonic style do not work. Detective Pikachu still looks uncanny to me, but the world of Pokémon is meant to be similar to the human world, and Pokémon are meant to be animals. The world of Sonic is Earth, and the redone design for Sonic and the other animal characters is beautiful; it really does feel like Sonic exists in a world overlaid on ours, more fantastical but still in reach.
The Minecraft movie trying to have its blocky cake and eat it too just feels like a shoddy compromise. The wolf howling at the moon doesn't look epic or awe-inspiring, it looks bad - in fact it's not even on model. They deliberately made it look blockier, for some reason. The invading piglins have realistic armour, and clothes, but their bodies are desperately trying to fit the voxel shapes and it all feels at odds. And of course the pink sheep and llama look god awful.
Combined with the human characters being Regular Humans, it feels more like some random friend group making a home movie than a fucking big budget production - and honestly, it loses some of the fun and appeal of portal fantasy.
I will say, it does look like they will visit the Nether at some point.
[ID: screenshot from the trailer. The scene is dark and lit by lava waterfalls originating above the frame, but the scenery resembles a Bastion. There are several piglins staring at the young male main character, whose head is peeking into frame. End ID]
Given they're shooting for the "marauding piglin" angle it's probably too much to ask, but the scene cuts away at this point instead of transitioning into that standard shot where all the mobs roar at the main character, so part of me is hoping that maybe this scene won't be at the climax, and we'll get to actually experience the piglins as nuanced mobs.

What safety features are important in skylights?
When adding skylights to your home, you’re not just creating a beautiful space with natural light; you’re also making a choice that impacts safety. Skylights can be a wonderful addition to any room, but ensuring they have the right safety features is key to protecting your home and the people inside it. Here’s what you should consider when choosing skylights to ensure they’re safe and secure.
Tempered or Laminated Glass
One of a skylight's most important safety features is the type of glass used. Skylights with tempered or laminated glass are designed to withstand impact. Tempered glass is heat-treated, making it stronger than regular glass and less likely to break into dangerous shards if damaged. On the other hand, laminated glass consists of two layers of glass with a thin plastic layer in between. This construction keeps the glass in place even if it cracks, reducing the risk of injury. Opting for skylights with these types of glass ensures they’re built to handle everyday wear and tear.
Proper Installation and Flashing
Even the safest skylight can pose a risk if installed incorrectly. Proper installation and flashing are vital for preventing leaks and structural damage. Flashing is the material that seals the edges of the skylight to the roof, creating a waterproof barrier. Water can seep into your home without proper flashing, leading to mold growth, rot, and other issues. When installing skylights, it’s essential to work with a professional like Lastime Exteriors, who has the expertise to ensure your skylights are securely installed and watertight.
UV Protection
Skylights that offer UV protection help safeguard both you and your belongings. Without UV protection, the sunlight streaming through a skylight can fade furniture, carpets, and artwork over time. More importantly, exposure to UV rays can be harmful to your skin. Look for skylights with a UV-blocking coating or glass that filters out many UV rays. This feature allows you to enjoy the natural light without worrying about the harmful effects of the sun.
Ventilation Features
Skylights that can be opened provide excellent ventilation, but they should also have safety features to prevent accidents. Look for skylights with locking mechanisms that allow them to be securely fastened when open. This prevents the skylight from being blown open by strong winds or accidentally closed when it’s unsafe. Some skylights even come with sensors that automatically close them if rain is detected, adding an extra layer of protection for your home.
Safety Grilles or Screens
Safety grilles or screens are essential if your skylight is in an area with a risk of falls, such as above a staircase or in a loft. These features act as a barrier, preventing people from accidentally falling through the skylight. Safety grilles are typically made of metal and can be installed over the skylight, while screens are often integrated into the design. Choosing a skylight with these additional safety measures can provide peace of mind, especially in homes with children or pets.
Energy Efficiency
While it might not seem like a safety feature at first glance, energy efficiency plays a role in your home's overall safety and comfort. Energy-efficient skylights help regulate the temperature inside your home, reducing the strain on your heating and cooling systems. This means your home will stay more comfortable year-round, which can be especially important in extreme weather conditions. Skylights with double glazing, low-E coatings, and proper insulation contribute to this energy efficiency.
Proper Sizing and Placement
The size and placement of a skylight can affect its safety. Skylights that are too large or poorly placed can increase the risk of overheating or glare, making spaces uncomfortable. On the other hand, skylights that are too small may not provide the desired amount of natural light. Proper placement also ensures that the skylight does not compromise the structural integrity of your roof. Working with a professional installer like Lastime Exteriors ensures that your skylights are appropriately sized and positioned to enhance safety and functionality.
Tinting or Shading Options
Skylights offering tinting or shading options can help control the light and heat entering your home. Too much direct sunlight can lead to overheating and glare, which can be uncomfortable and even dangerous in some situations. By choosing skylights with built-in shades, blinds, or tinting options, you can adjust the light levels to suit your needs and maintain a safe, comfortable environment inside your home.
Easy Maintenance and Cleaning
Finally, consider the maintenance and cleaning requirements of your skylight. Skylights that are difficult to clean can accumulate dirt, dust, and debris, which can affect both their appearance and function. Some skylights come with self-cleaning glass or are designed for easy access, making maintenance simpler. Keeping your skylights clean improves their longevity and ensures they continue to function safely.
Ready to Upgrade Your Home with Safe Skylights?
Choosing skylights with the right safety features can make a difference in your home. Every detail matters to ensure safety and comfort, from tempered glass to proper installation. If you’re ready to explore skylight options that prioritize safety and enhance your living space, reach out to Lastime Exteriors today. NVIDIA AI Blueprints For Build Visual AI Data In Any Sector

NVIDIA AI Blueprints
Businesses and government agencies worldwide are creating AI agents to improve the skills of workers who depend on visual data from an increasing number of devices, such as cameras, Internet of Things sensors, and automobiles.
Developers in almost any industry will be able to create visual AI agents that analyze image and video information with the help of a new NVIDIA AI Blueprints for video search and summarization. These agents are able to provide summaries, respond to customer inquiries, and activate alerts for particular situations.
The blueprint is a configurable workflow that integrates NVIDIA computer vision and generative AI technologies and is a component of NVIDIA Metropolis, a suite of developer tools for creating vision AI applications.
The NVIDIA AI Blueprints for visual search and summarization is being brought to businesses and cities around the world by global systems integrators and technology solutions providers like Accenture, Dell Technologies, and Lenovo. This is launching the next wave of AI applications that can be used to increase productivity and safety in factories, warehouses, shops, airports, traffic intersections, and more.
The NVIDIA AI Blueprint, which was unveiled prior to the Smart City Expo World Congress, provides visual computing developers with a comprehensive set of optimized tools for creating and implementing generative AI-powered agents that are capable of consuming and comprehending enormous amounts of data archives or live video feeds.
Deploying virtual assistants across sectors and smart city applications is made easier by the fact that users can modify these visual AI agents using natural language prompts rather than strict software code.
NVIDIA AI Blueprint Harnesses Vision Language Models
Vision language models (VLMs), a subclass of generative AI models, enable visual AI agents to perceive the physical world and carry out reasoning tasks by fusing language comprehension and computer vision.
NVIDIA NIM microservices for VLMs like NVIDIA VILA, LLMs like Meta’s Llama 3.1 405B, and AI models for GPU-accelerated question answering and context-aware retrieval-augmented generation may all be used to configure the NVIDIA AI Blueprint for video search and summarization. The NVIDIA NeMo platform makes it simple for developers to modify other VLMs, LLMs, and graph databases to suit their particular use cases and settings.
By using the NVIDIA AI Blueprints, developers may be able to avoid spending months researching and refining generative AI models for use in smart city applications. It can significantly speed up the process of searching through video archives to find important moments when installed on NVIDIA GPUs at the edge, on-site, or in the cloud.
An AI agent developed using this methodology could notify employees in a warehouse setting if safety procedures are broken. An AI bot could detect traffic accidents at busy crossroads and provide reports to support emergency response activities. Additionally, to promote preventative maintenance in the realm of public infrastructure, maintenance personnel could request AI agents to analyze overhead imagery and spot deteriorating roads, train tracks, or bridges.
In addition to smart places, visual AI agents could be used to automatically create video summaries for visually impaired individuals, classify large visual datasets for training other AI models, and summarize videos for those with visual impairments.
The workflow for video search and summarization is part of a set of NVIDIA AI blueprints that facilitate the creation of digital avatars driven by AI, the development of virtual assistants for individualized customer support, and the extraction of enterprise insights from PDF data.
With NVIDIA AI Enterprise, an end-to-end software platform that speeds up data science pipelines and simplifies the development and deployment of generative AI, developers can test and download NVIDIA AI Blueprints for free. These blueprints can then be implemented in production across accelerated data centers and clouds.
AI Agents to Deliver Insights From Warehouses to World Capitals
With the assistance of NVIDIA’s partner ecosystem, enterprise and public sector clients can also utilize the entire library of NVIDIA AI Blueprints.
With its Accenture AI Refinery, which is based on NVIDIA AI Foundry and allows clients to create custom AI models trained on enterprise data, the multinational professional services firm Accenture has integrated NVIDIA AI Blueprints.
For smart city and intelligent transportation applications, global systems integrators in Southeast Asia, such as ITMAX in Malaysia and FPT in Vietnam, are developing AI agents based on the NVIDIA AI Blueprint for video search and summarization.
Using computing, networking, and software from international server manufacturers, developers can also create and implement NVIDIA AI Blueprints on NVIDIA AI systems.
In order to improve current edge AI applications and develop new edge AI-enabled capabilities, Dell will combine VLM and agent techniques with its NativeEdge platform. VLM capabilities in specialized AI workflows for data center, edge, and on-premises multimodal corporate use cases will be supported by the NVIDIA AI Blueprint for video search and summarization and the Dell Reference Designs for the Dell AI Factory with NVIDIA.
Lenovo Hybrid AI solutions powered by NVIDIA also utilize NVIDIA AI blueprints.
The new NVIDIA AI Blueprint will be used by businesses such as K2K, a smart city application supplier in the NVIDIA Metropolis ecosystem, to create AI agents that can evaluate real-time traffic camera data. City officials will be able to inquire about street activities and get suggestions on how to make things better with to this. Additionally, the company is utilizing NIM microservices and NVIDIA AI blueprints to deploy visual AI agents in collaboration with city traffic management in Palermo, Italy.

Black Peter pt 3
After my last letter, you may have assumed that the case was entirely concluded with the arrest of John Hopley Neligan by Inspector Hopkins, however it was not so!
You don't say!
"Stanley Hopkins's methods do not commend themselves to me. I am disappointed in Stanley Hopkins. I had hoped for better things from him."
Oh, Stanley Hopkins. And you were doing so well. Alas, alack!
“What, then, is the alternative?” “The line of investigation which I have myself been pursuing."
Is this the thing where he was stabbing a pig corpse with a spear? I'm not sure that will stand up in court. But also he was saying that he couldn't do it in a single thrust, so I'm guessing that means that someone must have shot Captain Carey with a harpoon gun, rather than stabbing him with the harpoon, especially to stick him to the wall like that. They could have shot him from a distance away. Or he shot himself and this is all an accident.
We literally only have one named suspect at this point, though, and he can't have done it because he's already been arrested for it.
"‘Sumner, Shipping Agent, Ratcliff Highway. Send three men on, to arrive ten to-morrow morning.—Basil.’"
OK, so yes, this has to do with the stuff he was doing before.
The young detective was in high spirits at his success.
“It seems to me to have only one drawback, Hopkins, and that is that it is intrinsically impossible. Have you tried to drive a harpoon through a body? No? Tut, tut, my dear sir..."
Yeah, Stan. How could you have gone through this entire case and not attempted to stab a pig with a spear? Shoddy police work. Buffoonery. Utter clown show.
The precursors here of the modern forensics you see being performed on crime shows to this day. Literally down to using pigs because they're the closest equivalent to human flesh available.
But yeah, Stanley. Go stab a pig. It will also help you take out the anger you undoubtedly feel right now.
"My friend Watson could tell you that I spent a whole morning in that exercise."
This makes it sound like Watson was watching him do it. Which... different kind of date, I've got to say. Watson would probably do it, though.
His hopes and his ambitions were all crumbling about him. But he would not abandon his position without a struggle.
Come on, Stanley. You're better than this. Don't risk putting an innocent man in jail.
The first who entered was a little ribston-pippin of a man, with ruddy cheeks and fluffy white side-whiskers.
OMG it's Father Christmas! Was this his response to Carey's daughter's Christmas wish. Full service Santa Claus to the rescue.
I'm not sure if this is a first, but it feels like it: a character being compared to fruit rather than an animal. (A pippin is an apple). This is honestly kind of an adorable description, so I automatically don't think it's the guilty party. But he's great. Love him. Perfect character, no notes.
The second man was a long, dried-up creature, with lank hair and sallow cheeks.
Are these guys going to get progressively more unpleasant descriptions? Or is it going to be more the good, the bad, and the just right. Goldilocks and the Three Sailors.
The third applicant was a man of remarkable appearance. A fierce bull-dog face was framed in a tangle of hair and beard, and two bold dark eyes gleamed behind the cover of thick, tufted, overhung eyebrows.
Clearly a criminal. Although usually 'bull-dog' is reserved as a descriptor for police officers. Is this guy related to Lestrade?
Seems kind of mean that Holmes lured them all in with promise of a job, though. Rude. While they're busy running after an opportunity that doesn't even exist, other positions are being filled. They need to make a living, Sherlock.
Holmes leaned over his shoulder and passed both hands over his neck.
Did Holmes just come up behind the guy and put his arms over his shoulders? Really? That's such a weird way to do this. How do you even get handcuffs on a guy that way? Wouldn't it have been easier to do that from further down?
“I must really apologize, Hopkins,” said Sherlock Holmes; “I fear that the scrambled eggs are cold."
Cardinal offence. Cold scrambled eggs are practically a declaration of war.
“I make no complaint of being man-handled in this fashion..."
"You say I murdered Peter Carey; I say I killed Peter Carey, and there's all the difference."
There is a distinction, that's why there are different words for it and everything.
"I knew Black Peter, and when he pulled out his knife I whipped a harpoon through him sharp, for I knew that it was him or me."
Self defence. Well, I'm fine with that. Seems pretty cut and dried. He had a knife. Really, he did only have himself to blame.
"Peter Carey was master of the Sea Unicorn..."
"So far as I know, the man's name was never mentioned, and on the second night he disappeared as if he had never been."
Seems a likely story.
"Only one man knew what had happened to him, and that was me, for with my own eyes I saw the skipper tip up his heels and put him over the rail in the middle watch of a dark night, two days before we sighted the Shetland lights."
I mean, technically that's two men: you and the murderer. Unless the Skipper was a woman... which I'm pretty sure they weren't because it was Captain Carey, so... two people knew what had happened to him. Three including the dead guy, who probably doesn't count as he was dead, but he knew while it was going on. So... not to be pedantic or something, but really 'Only one living man knows' or 'Only three men knew'... Not that I'm pedantic at all.
"I guessed that he had done the deed for the sake of what was in that tin box, and that he could afford now to pay me well for keeping my mouth shut."
Oh no. Like, rule number one of being in a murder mystery, my dude. Don't do blackmail. It's the most direct path to death in these things. The second rule is never say out loud something that indicates you might have seen something but 'just need to check' before you tell anyone. Either way, you're dead.
This guy actually survived, but he did become the culprit, so... blackmail. Never worth it.
Though I think we're all agreed that he did the world a favour.
“Now I'll tell you the queerest part of the whole story."
You mean that wasn't the part where you admitted you didn't mind being tied up and manhandled by three other men? Seriously?
"For my part I walked ten miles, got a train at Tunbridge Wells, and so reached London, and no one the wiser."
I have questions. For instance, earlier Cairns says 'I stood there, with his blood splashing round me...' And he doesn't mention cleaning himself up at any point. Did he miraculously not get any of the 'splashing' blood on him, or was he just exaggerating the gore (although it was stated earlier to be a very gruesome crime scene) or did everyone just ignore him on the train covered in blood because this is the British public transport system and it's none of their business?
"I say again that if I killed Black Peter the law should give me thanks, for I saved them the price of a hempen rope.”
I mean... this is once again the old 'if you kill a killer the number of killers in the world stays the same' thing. You'd have to kill more than one murderer to actually save them any rope, if they hang you. At the moment they're just even. And given that they wouldn't have caught Carey anyway, they're technically down if they do hang you.
"This room is not well adapted for a cell, and Mr. Patrick Cairns occupies too large a proportion of our carpet.”
The reduction of carpet space is, of course, the main reason why keeping a prisoner in your sitting room is a bad idea.
"I was convinced that the initials ‘P.C.’ upon the pouch were a coincidence, and not those of Peter Carey, since he seldom smoked, and no pipe was found in his cabin."
I did forget about the initials on the pouch. Even though I remembered the pouch because I thought Carey didn't seem like the kind of man to share his tobacco.
"If it were a seaman, it could only be a seaman who had been with him on the Sea Unicorn."
"I spent three days in wiring to Dundee, and at the end of that time I had ascertained the names of the crew of the Sea Unicorn in 1883."
Every. Time.
I therefore spent some days in the East-end, devised an Arctic expedition.
Hey! You know what creatures you might see on an Arctic expedition?
?
Do you know?
??
Do you?
???
What? What did you think I was going to say?
“You must obtain the release of young Neligan as soon as possible,” said Holmes. “I confess that I think you owe him some apology."
Do they make cards that say 'Sorry I imprisoned you for a crime you did not commit?' Also... when did gift baskets become a thing?
"If you want me for the trial, my address and that of Watson will be somewhere in Norway—I'll send particulars later.”
Are they... actually going on the Arctic expedition? Are they taking Mr Lancaster of the apple cheeks? Are they going to explore the fjords?
Did you really organise an actual Arctic expedition? Are you going to pretend to be Captain Basil the whole time?
(Also, does Watson still have his practice, or did he just give that to the guy who lived next door?)
I believe I have read The Norwood Builder, which is coming next, because I recognise the title. We shall see how much I actually remember. Probably not a lot, going by what I've remembered of the ones I know I've read so far.

~Love Dia.
TW: Unfulfiled love

“Was it a bad day?”
Hinata’s hand extended to tuck some of his bangs behind his ear. His face is red and sweaty, hair sticking to it. He’s beyond drunk. The owner of the bar contacted her asking for someone to come retrieve the buzzed gentleman.
But Sasuke does not wish to leave yet.
So here she is, an unsuspected Wednesday night having a drink with him too.
“You could say so”
Muttering, his head barely held up by his hand on his cheek. Eyes closed.
“Work related?”
Sasuke is a private detective. So even when he does have bad workdays, he can never truly vent to her. He has way too many signed NDAs for that. A simple nod from the man tells her that there will be no further questions from her.
Moving her stool a bit closer to his. Caressing his back softly, guiding his head onto her shoulder. She can’t give him more comfort that this. Letting him know she’s there. That’s who they are, who they’ve always been since university when they met through some common friends.
Friends, best friends, the closest of friends.
“Come. Let’s go. I’ll take you to my place.”
Probably he does not want to be alone for today.
Sasuke stumbling to sit up. “Won’t that be an issue?”
A genuine and reasonable question. Her boyfriend has made a few comments about her friendship with Sasuke, shown jealousy. Tiny frown on her lips.
“It’s alright. He won’t” shaking her head vehemently. She’s unsure but won’t think about it now.
It hurts that now there are such questions that need to be asked when they used to simply show up at each other’s place without a second guess. She could take him to his place, knows his pin code, has a key to it. But…
*
Hinata is preparing breakfast for both of them, Sasuke probably still asleep in the bed, or if he is awake he’s dealing with a huge hangover. She did leave some ibuprofen and water on the nightstand for him.
As she pours the egg mixture in the pan to make some scrambled eggs, she can hear the shower running. So, he’s awake.
“How are you feeling? You were quite drunk yesterday.”
He’s putting a white t-shirt on, already has on sweatpants. Yes, he has multiple clothing items at her place.
“I feel oddly fine.” His head is killing him, Hinata looks at him with a knowing gaze. She remembers how badly he reacts to alcohol the next day, have seen it all in university. He too knows how she acts when drunk.
They’ve both seen each other at their highest, were there holding the other’s hand when they got their dream job, got the scholarship money they needed and so on. But they were there just the same when they were at their low, failed grades, evictions from dorm rooms due to some fights with roommates.
But most importantly, they were there at each other’s lowest. When Neji was killed in an accident by a drunk driver, when Sasuke’s father almost lost his life on duty as a police officer.
No matter how many partners either of them went through, Hinata is still his emergency contact, she’s the one his phone calls automatically when pressing the unlock button three times.
“Here; have some food. It may help”
*
Hinata is a high school English and art teacher, thankfully her university roommate Sakura also works at the school as the nurse so they always eat lunch together.
Today Sakura seems to be flinching and acting odd, she opens up her mouth multiple times but does not say anything. Hinata observes and lets it go for a while, but even her patience does not last forever.
“What’s wrong?”
Green uncertain eyes looking at her.
“I’m not supposed to tell you this.”
???? “Umm…ok?” confused, but if Sakura can’t tell her, who is she to insist.
“But I feel like I should!” Frustrated hand through pink hair.
“I’ll tell you. But you can’t blame me for ruining the surprise, ok? I just…I just feel like you should know…”
“Umm…ok” Same answer as before. Hinata’s anxiety raising too. What could Sakura know that is tormenting her so?
“Ok.” Multiple nods. “Here it goes.
…
Kiba is going to ask you to marry him.” Whisper-scream from the woman and then she covers her mouth, as if she cannot believe herself the words she just let out, somewhat regretting having told Hinata.
Her own heart beating at a rate that is truly scary. She’s happy, of course she is. She loves him, why else would she be dating him? But…but there’s still a tiny part of her that feels…sad.
“That’s amazing” Finally answering the secret. Putting her sadness away. She’ll deal with it at another time.
Hand over her heart. “That’s amazing”
Sakura’s shoulders relax. “It is! I just- I know that…”
But she doesn’t say anything after. There’s no need for her to. Hinata knows what she means. They talk about it more. Hinata asks her how she knew, Sakura tells her how Kiba ask her to take Hinata to get her nails done by the end of the month, and that she knows what that means. That she told him congratulation and he blushed shyly but proudly.
*
Home at the end of her day, eyes closed as she lays in bed. The room still smells of booze a bit, but mostly it smells of Sasuke.
She can’t help but think of their university days. Their last year, when she finally became aware of her feelings for him. When she’d look at him for seconds too long, think of him even when he was not there.
How one time when it was just them, when her head was resting on his shoulder she almost reached over to hold his hand. But fear is a much stronger feeling for her than love ever was. She feared rejection, feared ruining their 4 year long friendship.
They’ve also each dated multiple people throughout their friendship, how there was almost never a time period in which both of them were single. That each time she almost got the courage to do something she’d cower in fear. So, she just waited. Waiting for him to give her a signal, waiting for him to make a move. And it just never happened.
She was still waiting until 2 years ago when she met Kiba, when she started dating him casually, but now…now he’s the one she calls first after a hard day. He’s the one she thinks about the most.
Hands covering her face. Fading unfulfilled love is not what she thought her and Sasuke would turn into.
*
Hinata is melancholic and thinks about all of their interactions for the following few days. So when Sasuke calls her, asking her to come over she still has all those thoughts into her mind.
Arms around him the moment the door opens. Sasuke taken aback, chuckling. Asking ‘Did you miss me that much’ jokingly. But when she doesn’t reply his heart rate spikes up, pushing her slightly to look at her face, a few unshed tears into her eyes.
“Hinata? What’s wrong?” Cubbing her cheek, wiping her tear away with his thumb.
Her eyes closed, heart heavy and confused. Fear makes her fingertips numb, but she cannot back down now, she needs to know, it’s important. She cannot answer Kiba’s question with a truthful and enthusiastic ‘yes’ unless they talk about this, unless they move on.
“I loved you” Her words echoing into the hallway. A moment of silence that urges her to open her eyes and look up at him, he has a sad smile on his lips.
“I know. I loved you too”
Her whole body is tingling, shocked. “What?”
Sasuke caresses her hair and pulls her into a hug.
“I didn’t know all along. I suspected at times, but then you’d turn around and do things that made me believe I was a narcissist for thinking you might feel the same. I was waiting for you to say or do something, tell me I wasn’t wrong.
But time went on and…well…”
Her mouth wide open, fist clenched, and she hit his shoulder. “I was waiting for YOU!”
More frustrated with both of them than anything else.
“By the time I realized that perhaps my feelings were indeed reciprocated, so many things happened, so much time passed and it felt like a shame…to change”
Looking at him somewhat in disbelief.
“Kiba asked me to marry him” He didn’t yet but that’s just details. “I said yes” she didn’t yet but she will.
Sasuke’s smile dims a bit, but he hugs and congratulates her nevertheless.
They remain in a hug for a long time before she breaks the silence.
“We both said loved. In the past”
I still love you, but it is different now…”
Small nod. She agrees. She feels the same. The feelings faded in time, no longer having a romantic aspect to them.
They both waited for each other, but the wait was just too long

Note
so apparently disney is still copyright claiming steamboat willie on youtube (possibly due to automatic content detection). a video about it by a youtuber named "Vailskibum" who i have never encountered before came up in my recommended (it's short, i watched it, my takeaway is that it would be a good idea to warn people this might happen if they use any of the animation on youtube for anything)
Thanks for the heads up!
Just checked the one I uploaded and they have indeed copyright claimed it but are ~not taking any action~ because ~the copyright owner chose not to~
so yeah I'm disputing it because it's Public Domain AND I'm making a video about it to call out this bullshit lol.
Edit:
Update: Jan. 5, 2024, 5:18 p.m. EST On Friday, Disney retracted the copyright claim on YouTuber Brock Baker's "Steamboat Willie" video.
so yeah, if this happens, you can dispute the claim on youtube, state that it is explicitly public domain and you have the right to upload it, and Disney does not in any way have the right to claim copyright.
Most sources are saying it was probably claimed via automatic detection, which hasn't been updated.
Pretty sure a whole bunch of lawyers are gonna get up in arms about this little "accident".
