I was reading old batjokes comments and this has a crazily accurate analogy why their relationship works as well as it does
@AssasinB (ComicVine)
You are the only carnivore in an island populated only with herbivores, and you decide you are not going to eat them as you realize this creatures are meaningful and an important part of the island that surround them. So, you decide to protect them instead. You interact with them and get attached to some of them, and they become your closest friends, perhaps your only companions in a place were everyone else looks bad at you. But, you become the protector of their island, and some of this creatures began to like you and look up to you.
And then, one day, another carnivore haunts the island and start eating the herbivores you protected, while cruelly having fun in causing them pain. This carnivore looks at you, and finds it funny that instead of eating this stupid creatures you decided to befriend them. So he mocks you, laughs at you, and eat more herbivores just to annoy you. The two of you fight, you save some herbivores, he kills more and hurts the ones closest to you. But then, why in heavens sake you did not kill this monster? Why after fight and fight you still refuse to end this madness and save the island of herbivores from this crazy carnivore?
Because, you began to realize that this carnivore and you, are perhaps the only ones on the island. And despite having found friends among the other creatures, they are never, ever going to truly understand who you are, or the hunger you endure each night just to keep them safe. Despite everything you done for them, you still essentially a carnivore and they are herbivores. You are different from them and will never be like them, no matter how much you act like they do.
And this other carnivore, despite doing exactly the opposite of everything you stand for, is the only one in the whole island who truly understands you, who knows what you and him are. And more importanlty, he knows exaclty how lonely you feel. So he is, in a twisted way, your only true companion.

If You HAD to pick one, Batjokes or Batman x batgirl?
Go into detail about character analogies and different universes and circumstances.
Discuss :)

What's your favorite thing about batjokes?
I love it in the context of tlbm since it parodies the “2 sides of the same coin” analogy that a lot of grimdark Batman writers love to use and takes it to the extreme. I always used to love that aspect of the dynamic, but a lot of the actual material is way too “gritty/realistic” in my opinion for me to genuinely enjoy the pairing. Tlbm takes a pretty unhealthy dynamic and turns it into a classic romcom pair. Before tlbm my favorite batjokes was in the movie Batman vs Dracula where (spoiler) Batman thinks Joker is dead and then mourns for him (approximate quote: “I already lost Joker I can’t lose you too”) Joker comes back and gets turned into a vampire by Dracula. Batman catches him and ends up feeding Joker his own blood when he won’t stop complaining. Joker then says something pretty flirty about drinking Batman’s blood. That one scene in the movie stuck with me so much that years later my memory of the movie turned into Batman having to keep Joker alive with his blood while trying to defeat Dracula, becoming weaker each time Joker had to feed.
I guess what I like most is taking the intended “creepy gay” tropes that comic writers use to make Joker “absolutely mental!” and turning it into “nah they genuinely care about the other’s wellbeing.”

do you have any thoughts on flashpoint paradox batman/joker and sublimated homoeroticism bc boy...i feel that was dc outing itself big time on the b/j relationship
Honestly my first thought when I think of Flashpoint: Knight of Vengeance is "y'all big fuckin cowards, you KNOW this shit is romantic." My second thought is "holy shit that colorist is so good".The wild ass thing about flashpoint batjokes is that they are /less/ shippy than a lot of famous incarnations, and they were /married/? Like Martha spends all their shared screen time talking about how much she hates and resents him. We know that they loved each other because there are these tender moments--like my favorite, where she gently touches his face--but not once does she say anything fond or positive about him. It reminds me a little of how the second they made the Master from Dr Who a woman, suddenly all the shipping subtext was text and the romantic desire was all on the surface. It's validating on the one hand, but it's such a see-through example of heteronormative bull. Nothing changed but gender? The fact that they picked a married couple to become batman and the joker tells us that there's something analogous to marriage in their relationship. 1 vs -1. Martha is pretty fucking terrifying though, and I think that's because she comes across as so deeply spiteful, whereas most jokers are kind of chill on the surface, at at least they have calm moments in between tantrums. She is just ANGRY, and she is COMING for you.
