{ ooc. Answering the mega evolution asks got me thinking about the fact that despite how freely Serena talks about it and the sort of bond required to achieve it...
she really tends to leave out the gruelling hours she and every other approved trainer have spent in the Tower of Mastery, or the equivalent location in Hoenn. The fact that most students of mega evolution canonically give up their training before being qualified to use it, like professor sycamore, due to how difficult and demanding it is. The sheer amount of training and initial stress it causes, knowing that whether it has a beneficial effect on your pokemon and neutral on yourself (like every other bit of lore), or if it hurts you and your pokemon (like in the USUM dex entries) all comes down to you and you alone.
The fact that, for the first few times around, it's uncomfortable at best for the trainer, until they've learnt how to control the infinity energy and split their focus between that and battling. Or that the reason it's such a powerful, potent sort capable of boosting life or harming it if used improperly is due to key stones and mega stones being irradiated by the combined power of Xerneas and Yveltal
Because, after all, while the phenomenon is inherently beneficial for pokemon and gives an edge in battle, the last thing she needs is for someone to think she is putting herself or her pokemon in harm's way when she really isn't. The only times she will ever talk about it is if she is asked directly, or someone expresses interest in being approved so they know EXACTLY what they're getting into.}

The Old Gods
This is Day 23 of Fili whumptober!
Warnings: battle, bodies, prisoner of war, blood
Word count: 1209
After raiding an orc camp Fili finds a girl chained up and terrified. There something strange about her though.
Please refer to the warnings of this story. If you go past this point you are consenting to reading this content.
Fili raised his twin swords high above his head and let out a dwarven battle cry that would strike fear into the hearts of any that heard it. His soldiers let out their own cries as they charged around him, chasing down the surviving orcs from the camp they had invaded. The pounding of hooved feet and the clashing of steel on steel echoed around his head as he walked through bodies of orcs and goblins.
It had been months now since the battle of the five armies, and Fili had taken it upon himself to lead whatever troops were willing to run the rest of the creatures off of Ereborin soil and away from their home. Dwarves, Men and Elves alike bowed to his orders now, wanting to rid their homelands from those who would wish to take and slaughter them.
And so he walked, the braids of a high general and prince woven tightly into his blond curls. He gave orders in Khuzdul to burn any structures that might lure the dark creature back to occupy, in Sindarin to round up and calm any livestock that remained and in Common to take stock of numbers and count their kills.
Like the last three camps they had hit, they had sent their enemies running or to their deaths, and after being on the road for almost a week this time, Fili was ready to finally go home. With no snags or setbacks, he would have his troops back home by dawn.
“Prince Fili,” a light voice called out, and the dwarf turned to face Legolas Greenleaf. His armor and hair were immaculate as ever, and the only evidence that he had went to battle at all was the splatter of black blood that stained his pale skin.
“Yes friend? What ails you?”
Legolas’s face went somber, well, as somber as an elf could manage, “We found a prisoner. Human by appearance, but something about her feels… odd. What shall we do with her?”
Fili frowned. He was surprised that an elf would hesitate to free a lass, stranger or not. It was expected for a human perhaps, Fili knew all to well how they treated their woman like they were pieces of coal instead of the greatest of jewels, to be used instead of treasured, but he knew elves to mimic his own kins ways around them.
“Bring me to them,”
Legolas led him through charred ruins and more bodies, Fili’s piecing blue eyes scanning every inch or terrain as they went. Already a group of people had began to crowd.
“Out of the way,” the blond elf barked out, making the crowd back away and allowing Fili to catch a glimpse of the person who created such a scene. When he did, he felt the air leave his lungs.
Tucked away under what was left of a war chariot was a freighted looking human girl. Her clothes were torn and frayed, barely covering her shivering frame. Her hair reached below her thighs, messy and knotted, her skin cut and bruised, but what worried him the most was the thick chain locked around her throat. It wasn’t like orcs to keep their prisoners alive, but it seemed they cared enough to keep her fed if the bowl at her feet was anything to go by.
He crouched down to get a better look at her, finally meeting her eyes and realizing why his elven friend had been hesitant to aid her. Her eyes were an abnormal purple that seemed to flicker and glitter around her pupils and the second they met his, he felt the burn of power under his skin.
“Are you hurt?” he asked her in his common tongue, “May I unchain you?”
He waited for a moment, but her stunning eyes only showed confusion, her head tilting to the side ever so slightly.
“Are you hurt?” he asked again, this time in Sindarin. Still, he was given no response. He tried a few other languages, even his own secret tongue, but the girl simply shook her head and hid herself deeper. He looked around for help, and Legolas tried a few different phrases he didn’t understand, but still the girl didn’t respond.
Fili racked his mind for any other languages he had been taught as a boy, but all he could think off was a fictional language from an old book he had hyper-fixated on as a boy. He snorted to himself at the thought but through out a phase he had memorized.
“Hail to the allies of the old gods,” he spoke poorly, disbelief staining his face as her head snapped up. Her voice was deep but smooth, her accent unrecognizable to his ears, but strangely alluring.
“What do you know of the old gods?” she asked, if he translated correctly that was.
“Oh uh,” he stuttered, not sure were to go from there. It had been a while since he had read the book and only certain words and names would come to mind, “ally,” he said with a gesture to himself.
She rocked on the balls of her feet for a moment before moving towards him. She made a few sounds he couldn’t understand, but he recognized the words ‘stuck’ and ‘metal’ as she pulled on the chain and collar she wore, and ‘villain’ as she pointed to an orc body nearby.
Slowly as not to scare her, he unsheathed one of his swords and pushed it towards her. She watched him with those strange eyes of hers and sniffed what he offered her. Nimble fingers reached out and trailed through the black blood that still stained his weapons, making the connection between the blood and the creature she called ‘villain’. She pointed to the body and made a questioning sound in confirmation.
He nodded and tried his best to mimic the sound. She gave a nod back and in a blink she had hold of his sword and was trying to pry off her collar.
He rushed forwards to stop her from hurting herself, freezing when he wrapped his arms around her body, one hand around her wrist. He was close enough to see the way her eyes danced like stars and he felt her tense under his touch.
He was gentle as he moved her wrist and in extension, his sword. She whimpered for a moment as the blade struck her skin but as the collar came away, she breathed out a sigh and closed her eyes, leaning up against him in gratitude and trust.
He slipped his weapon away and took her in his arms, pulling him close to his chest as a wave of protectiveness washed over him. She freely allowed him to lift her from the ground, tucking her head into his neck and using her fingers to grip onto his armor.
“I’m going to take her back to the mountain and have her healed. Maybe we can get some more out of her there?”
Legolas gave a swift nod, “If I may ask? What language did you speak to communicate with her? I did not recognize it,”
“It’s from an old fiction book strangely enough,” Fili mused back, “I think it was called English,”
