CGL map scale Overlord for battletech I painted up. Almost did a big Combine logo on it, but turns out the Federated Suns navy also does red and black, so leaving it off so I have an excuse for it fitting more usages.

the big problem with the BTAU is “where the hell on this map could i stick the entire plot of the expanse minus the protomolecule?” and it isn’t not being able to find a place, either
Tumblr media
as you can see, there’s so many places to slip a plot like that into, and that’s not getting into those weird gray areas and the blanks in between
“the expanse but they just did that, there’s no PM” is a day ending in Y for the inner sphere

Brief list of...
...meta gags I would put in Battletech fanfic if I ever write any:
Mechwarrior with a national, regiment, Clan or merc company emblem freehanded horribly on their 'mech, just absolutely terrible and blobby.
Alpha Strike skill levels as in-universe rankings (i.e., "the only reason you are listed as a skill-6 is because the ratings do not go down as far skill-7.")
'Mech that is such an ancient version of its line- not an outdated mark, just a really old iteration -that it barely visually scans as the same model.
Across the Inner Sphere and beyond, the classic military grid map has been replaced with a hex map.
Collectible trading cards that sport the 'mech of choice, famous exploits, and quotes of or about Mechwarriors of renown. (Possibly, 'mechs being sold with a card for a famous pilot of theirs stuck on the control panel.)
You can easily stalk a 'mech squadron on the move because they track the dirt from their last world all over the local terrain.
Frequent problems of lookalike 'mechs. More than once has a Zeus been reported as an Awesome, or a Valkyrie taken for a Wasp, by pilots only glimpsing them at a distance through the cockpit.

🫵 Hey You, Battletech Player
Are you having trouble getting local game stores to care about your stupid little giant robot game? Annoyed that Classic games take so long that any event usually needs to be an all day affair? Fan of goofy gladiator fights and blind boxes? Well, I have the scenario packet for you:
Introducing the Salvage Free For All
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's how it works: get some salvage blind boxes (or just random extra mechs in your collection), some dice, a map, and a bunch of fellow mech-heads in one place. Everyone gets two random mechs/boxes, picks a mech to fight with, and then engages in a 3-5-way single map close range, heavy metal fight to the death with an ever shrinking zone of engagement. If you're playing with prizes, the last mechwarrior standing in the circle of equals has first pick of the unused mechs, with the eliminated pilots taking their choices based on who got KO'd most recently. All said it's a fun little casual way to play the game for more than two players while trying out mechs you otherwise maybe wouldn't and maybe getting some support from local game stores.

Catch that plane!
Is there anything better than good games with good people?
Played a 5-person game of classic BattleTech today (2v3). 6 Mechs per side, 7500 BV. "Smash and grab" attacker/defender scenario of my own design, in which the raiders must successfully snatch electronic warfare tech out of the cockpit of an experimental aerospace fighter and run like hell.
*Everything on the table was mine, from mapsheets to record sheets, minis and dice. It was fun to fuel the party from top to bottom.
The scenario turned out even better than I hoped. Firm 10-turn limit. The raiders have up to 8 turns to smash the cockpit and grab the objective, then must escape toward their edge of the map for the next two turns (the two turns of escape, in which the defenders can try to snatch back the objective, are required).
Part of what made the scenario fun was the moving objective. The defenders can't just "camp the point" because the aircraft is taxiing every turn, so it actually carries the objective closer to the raiders before takeoff. I felt this was a good way to balance out how much the attackers must expose themselves to attempt the grab.
Long story short, we had a blast. My team's (defenders) MVP was actually my little UrbanMech R90, which held the center of the field like an absolute boss and refused to die.
Raiders' MVP was their Spider, which eventually slipped through the defenses and snapped up the objective in textbook fashion. We absolutely tore the armor off that speedy jerk, blew off an arm, got critical hits on weapons and engines...but it refused to go down and eventually carried the objective to safety for the win.
This is why we BattleTech.

I come bearing questions.
What Mecha games are you familiar with and would recommend?
So to get the obvious out of the way:
Armored Core 6, the one most people (including myself) started with and probably the easiest to get into.
Gundam Breaker 4, personally the story is a miss for me but the gameplay and the building aspect is really fun
Titanfall 2, peak FPS probably heard of it before.
Now onto the stuff I love (I still love all 3 of these above but these ones below are so niche they deserve the extra love) :
Gearbits, it's so cheap and simple but God damn is it fun, if you have a pc that connects to a socket or a laptop that uses a battery you should definitely get it, steam exclusive unfortunately.
SD Gundam Battle Alliance, my jam before I got into GB4, it is a bit grindy but it's story is enjoyable enough and the gameplay is fire, definitely get it even if you're not sold on the SD ascetic (also first PC game to feature the Xi Gundam I'm pretty sure, tho it is dlc locked)
Into the Breach, the best turn based mecha roguelike ever made, definite classic that is both challenging and fair.
Phantom Brigade, the best turn based mecha Xcom like, although not featuring a grid system it's mechanics are fun, I haven't beaten it yet but it's probably my top 3 game (poly graphics indie games save me)
Airmech, my favorite RTS ever ever made. You get to play as a transforming robot that either sends out troops all around the map in plane mode or joins the action directly in robot mode. Absolutely love it.
Lightyear Frontier, a farming sim but you get to pilot a mecha, it is a brilliant chill game and I absolutely love it, I only played the demo but I'm getting it sometime soon.
Now onto the game I haven't played but is really good from what I've heard:
Battletech, a slow strategic Xcom like that I've wanted to get into for a while, still on the list, tons of dlc and pretty expensive.
That's all I got, there's a ton more tho, oh and:
Mecha break, a coming soon fast action PvP mecha fighter, fully customizable machines with absolutely ridiculous speeds from the looks of things.

since ive repaired my printer and have Battletech Brain ive gone and picked up an old project that i started almost two years ago and dropped because at the time i hadnt been able to play bt anyway,, but thats changed now!!
Tumblr media
my biggest complaint abt bt is how much the level differences play into gameplay while being difficult to parse on a flat map so im CHANGING THAT
gonna have a fully 3dprinted board of magnetic tiles to make a prebby battlefield out of, just need to do,, probably around 200h of printing
part of why id stopped was the 'magnetic' part, 3mm ball magnets in the quantity needed gets pretty expensive, but IVE GOT A JOB NOW so those should be here by the 5th

During the last three days I played my first few proper games of Battletech - and i can say that didnt had do much fun playing tabletop games for at least several years! Maybe this is just effect of new game system - to be honest all GW systems is pretty close together - but it was fun, i needed to make important decisions every turn for almost all of my models, etc.
First game was big classic Battletech battle - me and other new player both taking a lances of inner sphere mechs aganist our opponents clan star. Highlights of the battle - first critical hit of the game was my Wolverine blowing up after enemy Warhawk blow up his SRM ammo, enemy Nova which was able to hold up for the five round of shooting of three mechs of my ally, score the mission and only then blow up and finally my Atlas that survive three round of shooting by Executioner, Timberwolf and Warhawk, lose almost all of his armor and than after the first structure hit get his gyro destroyed and fall on his face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And today I played two games of alpha strike - our local group prefer to play it on the grid map too. And this game variant was as much fun as Classic if not more - at first I was afraid that game was too much simplified, but I was sooo wrong - at this level, with so many mechs it was whole different set of decisions you need to make that this much lighter version of tracking weapons and damage didnt matter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, as conclusion - if you thinkig about playing Battletech - its totally worth you time and im so glad that I decided to try it

MW5: Clans
Having messed around with Mechwarrior 5 Clans for a bit I think I can throw out a pretty strong recommendation for it for anyone still uncertain. The TLDR: I enjoy it plenty, lore and gameplay. The cutscenes and characters are pretty good.
I apparently made a review of it because I felt like talking about it into the void. With largely positive things to say about it. Bunch of stuff I honestly want to hear other people's opinions on too.
It is quite back to the old days in Mechwarrior 4 with characters and opinions and how it flows with the fights. While I enjoyed MW5 Mercs, it is kindof lacking in that department though as the DLCs pile on you get a lot more of it or at least attempts that aren't halfbad. Good effort has gone into making the people sound right, with accents and affects. Like yes, the clanners talk as they're supposed to. When one of your team uses a contraction every clanner outside your star immediatly lose their shit. Not in the meme sense but it they might as well have said c*nt next to a bunch of americans in terms of foulness spoken out loud.
The story following the smoke jaguars during Operation Revival is interesting considering they commit the worst war crime during the invasion and also kindof continually fumble the ball against the Combine. Your star, five lone mechs against the inner sphere, are part of the proceedings and the different characters in the star interact, sometimes disagree or just give each other shit. Got a nice team atmosphere. It introduces stuff and concepts among the clans quite nicely so even if you're not familiar with them you'll pick up what they're on about.
I think it does a pretty nice job of showing things from the Clans perspective of Operation Revival and how they are completely unprepared for the Inner Sphere and continually frustrated with it and things just going increasingly awry. There's a few beats that I think could've been done better certainly but I think it's good drama and a fun time in that regard. I could go more into what I think of the depictions of the clans in the game but that's basically some nerding out about the larger battletech universe and stuff. After turtle bay I kinda had that feeling that I've had in the past when a game makes you a culprit of a war crime or something terrible. A special kind of disgust made all the more visceral as you see the people, the resistance, in Turtle bay reacting to the bombing. Then everything blowing up.
Another thing that I quite like of this depiction is that the inner sphere does put up some serious resistance. Stuff doesn't roll over. They put up some serious fights. More often than not this is called dishonourable because the inner sphere descends into trickery and lies even though aforementioned trickery and lies are often extremely basic ambushes or "send more mechs to the fight." It is funny to contrast with Mercs where this just is how the Inner sphere fights. That said the clanners do eventually learn that they will set traps and ambush and attempt to fight unfair. Very often sending tons of mechs and people into the meat grinder in so doing. Some of the fights do get pretty intense and hard. You also get to see Comstar be Comstar. Wearing their space wizard garbs and being a manipulative force that will never tell you the truth.
The maps while feeling a bit more lived in than most of what Mercs managed to do, are kindof cramped and not great half the time for the kindof long range shooting matches more than half your equipment is good for, not helped that even with the added control to your lance or star mates you still have to be the one to step into the breach. Luckily there's many things you can do to fit that problem. I kindof wish that the star command screen had a pause function so that you could assign targets or at least go into bullet time. Because by the time the enemies show up. They're usually ontop of you so that's not really time to get your map out and play mechcommander. The fact it doesn't pause or slow down so you can set attacks or even give things preferences such as "maybe don't waste all your ammo on the fricking Locust when it will fall over from a stiff breeze" is honestly kindof baffling. Especialy how exciting it otherwise looks and how much detailing you can do with the Star mates XP and omnipods for their mechs. Which is not quite like tabletop omnipod but makes more sense than those omnipods.
Because of the tight maps the AI will more often than not walk in front of you when you're trying to hose something down way more often than they did in mercs. And they will complain about it when you invariably remove all thier back armor by mistake. You get used to it.
The fights feel pretty good honestly. Good challenging combat maps. They got a lot more field repair bays around compared to MW5:mercs. Which... I think I only remember 2? And were introduced like they were going to be more common in the campaign. Which holy shit, you're going to need those repair bays. You get to visit some really varied battlefields, a Star League depot, a cave system, cities and country side. Lots of mountain passes. Deserts and even do battle on a space port.
There's boss battles now. With various levels of canonicity. I don't know if we needed those but I see the point of them. They are usually there to give some variety to shooting stuff after waves of mechs and vehicles and vtols. You can also shoot down shilones now. I'd say aerospace fighters but it's all shilones.
All in all. If you enjoy mechwarrior, if you enjoy battletech. Chances are Mechwarrior 5 clans will have you eating well.

Of the two games I played at a battletech event in my state, the second one, a zone control scenario, easily had some funny circumstances. A floating TAC to my Hatchetman's hip actuator effectively killed my ability to roam around and menace and contest map quadrants, so I elected to hide next to a hill and try to lock down the zone I was in. Contesting my Hatchetman (45 tonnes) was an Avatar (70 tonnes), and an Orion (75 Tonnes), who spent about 4 turns firing everything they could at my HCT in an attempt to kill me and open up the zone. They did 20 damage a turn. They hit my Gyro once, they hit my head once, I had single digit armor remaining in most spots, but Wheelman is too cool to lose his cool. Wheelman is a 2/2 in a slightly modified succession wars mech. Wheelman lived and Wheelman dealed long enough for our Viper Pilot to turn his Medium Clan Omni into a 40 ton missile to save the day
