Positive news for the optimistic!
I first heard about this on the BBC Global News Podcast (starts at around 14:40 for me, but that may vary based on the ads they give you), but I found an article from The Guardian as well, if you work best with a text format. Preview:
The G20 group of the world’s most powerful countries is exploring plans for a global minimum tax on the world’s 3,000 billionaires, aiming to end a “race to the bottom” that has enabled the super-rich to pay less than the rest of the population.

last week on the Global News Podcast (BBC), they talked about the number of Ukrainian civilians who've been killed in the war (10 000)
they mentioned a woman who performed as a singer, and whose last performance was actually recorded, 20 minutes before she was killed by a Russian rocket
the journalist asked the singer's mom how she's been dealing with the loss of her daughter
and the mom said: "it's as if you have died but you can still speak"

Big Finish launches Doctor Who audio drama podcast
17 February 2024
Classic Doctor Who audio dramas will be brought to a new audience with Into the TARDIS, a new podcast due to be released weekly from March 2024.
Tumblr media
Since 1999, Big Finish Productions has been producing full-cast audio adventures set in the world of Doctor Who. Featuring specially composed music and cinematic sound effects, these stories are officially licensed by the BBC and star original cast members of the TV series.
To mark 25 years of this output, Big Finish Productions, in association with BBC Studios, Zebralution Podcast, Apple and Acast, are excited to announce Into the TARDIS, which will showcase fan-favourite stories from Big Finish’s back catalogue.
The stories will be presented in episodic instalments released weekly on Saturdays – like the original serialised broadcast of classic Doctor Who stories on the BBC. Each episode will feature a brand-new introduction read by Colin Baker (who played the Sixth Doctor on TV and continues to do so for Big Finish), as well as behind-the-scenes interviews.
Into the TARDIS will begin in March 2024, with the first two episodes serialising Death and the Queen. Originally released by Big Finish in 2016, this full-cast audio drama stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate, with a script by James Goss.
Big Finish chairman Jason Haigh-Ellery said: “As part of the celebration marking 25 years of Big Finish Doctor Who audio drama productions, I am delighted to announce that Big Finish are partnering with BBC Studios, Zebralution, Apple and Acast to launch Into the TARDIS – the first officially licensed Doctor Who audio drama podcast. This is an initiative that we have been working on for some time and I am particularly excited about, as it will bring Big Finish’s work to a far wider audience.”
Jan Paterson, director of audiobooks at BBC Studios, added: “For many years now, Big Finish has provided Doctor Who fans with thrilling audio dramas and we’re excited to see them extend their offering with a podcast. Into the TARDIS will allow the fanbase to extend their enjoyment of the show as well as open the Doctor Who audio drama world up to a whole new audience.”
Luisa Abraham, managing director at Zebralution Podcast, said: “We’re thrilled to have contributed our expertise to Big Finish for the launch of their new podcast, Into the TARDIS. Our collaboration marks the beginning of an exciting journey, and we eagerly anticipate sharing numerous captivating stories with the global Doctor Who community and welcoming countless new fans into the fold.”
Into the TARDIS will be available via all podcast platforms, and all listeners will be able to stream it for free with ads. Users of Apple Podcasts will have the additional option of subscribing for £2.99 a month, which will give early access to episodes and ad-free listening. A 3-day free trial of this subscription will also be available.

This week, as every week, Brexit enfeebled the UK. It was not a one-off disaster, like a fatal heart attack. Rather Brexit is showing itself to be a debilitating disease that never grants us a moment’s peace.
In the past few days
The post-Brexit trade talks between the UK and Canada collapsed. Despite all the promises of global Britain crossing the clear blue oceans and cutting deals with India, the US, Canada and China, we remain isolated.
After years of being too scared to actually take control of the UK’s borders, the government promised checks on imported food from the EU. The effect, according to the food industry, will be to raise prices and produce shortages. (Romantics searching for flowers for Valentine’s Day may well have their work cut out, despairing florists are already warning.)
Brexit took away the right of Brits to live and work where we pleased in the EU. For a while in 2023 it looked as if France would allow British expats to stay for longer than 90 days at a stretch. But the French courts blocked that concession to second home owners in the Dordogne.
Meanwhile the Brexit inspired border in the Irish Sea between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK continued to enrage Ulster Unionists, who in their hearts must now know that English Tories have played them for fools.
Finally, the Guardian reported that the EU's plans to increase bulk medicine procurement across the bloc risk creating shortages in Britain.
That’s just in the past few days.
And yet the politicians who promised the electorate that leaving the EU would turn us into a world leader are simply not held to account.
You would have to be 35 or older to remember how the BBC used to deal with politicians who failed to deliver on their promises. In 2003 Tony Blair backed the US invasion of Iraq on the grounds that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.
He didn’t.
BBC journalists tore into the then Labour government. Its ministers had taken us to war on a false prospectus, they claimed. Lied, in short.
And yet in a dereliction of journalistic duty the BBC has let the false prospectus of Brexit pass without the smallest attempt to remind its authors of their false promises.
Here is Daniel Hannan, the Zelig of British nationalism. For more than two decades, he popped up at what felt like every right-wing meeting and rally, urging ever more Utopian fantasies on the luckless British public.
In 2016, he promised the revival of depressed British cities, a Silicon Valley in the East End of London, and falling prices and booming wages for us all.
Is he or any other Conservative or Faragist politician questioned to within an inch of his life by the BBC?
Of course not. Continuous funding cuts and right-wing attacks have destroyed the corporation’s ability to provide a vital news service. It’s given up on democratic accountability.
I can make one argument in its defence. If a BBC presenter were in the room with me now, I am sure they would say that the Labour opposition is giving them nothing to report. It is staying silent for fear of alienating elderly voters. The Liberal Democrats shut up for the same reason.
In its politicians and media, the UK is like the caricature Victorian family that puts on a show of respectability and says nothing about its dirty secrets.
No one, however, can shut up Professor Chris Grey, and our culture is the better for it. His Brexit & Beyond blog is the best source of information on our national malaise, and I was delighted to have him on podcast.
I will write a longer piece, which will bounce off our conversation about the purity spiral on the right Brexit set off. With a bit of luck that should be up tomorrow or on Wednesday. I am also working of a read on the lessons from the 1920s for the 2020s.

Coronation talk .news.com.au
news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site Entertainment Celebrity Life Royals King Charles’ massive Prince Harry and Meghan Markle coronation gamble The King has blinked and wants to “broker” a deal with his renegade son but it could come at a high cost.

Being the Archbishop of Canterbury used to look like quite the cushy gig. Sure, the mitre is a bit ridiculous and overseeing royal weddings, with live global TV audiences in the billions, would be a tad nerve wracking.
Still, it still looked like a relatively plum appointment, what with getting the keys to Lambeth Palace and never having to run a parish bake sale ever again.
So let’s just pity Justin Welby who got the posting in 2013.
Welby will go down in history as the first leader of the Church of England to become embroiled in controversy after an Oprah Winfrey TV special and the first leader of a world religion to be called in to stymie a possible Netflix story arc.
(Hard to see Pope Francis taking a break from his day job to have to deal with the cardinals wanting to make a reality show …)
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby sparked headlines when he asked Oprah Winfrey what she did for a living at Harry and Meghan’s wedding. Picture: Bethany Clarke/Getty Images Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby sparked headlines when he asked Oprah Winfrey what she did for a living at Harry and Meghan’s wedding. Picture: Bethany Clarke/Getty Images Over the weekend, Welby was back in the headlines with the Mail on Sunday reporting that King Charles has decided it is better to have royal refuseniks the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attend his May 6 coronation than to leave them to their own devices back in the US, and to that end has asked the Archbishop to “broker a deal” with the couple.
According to the Mail, His Majesty is of the view that if the Sussexes stayed away from London it could end up being a “greater distraction” than having the duo in the royal family’s midst, which is why Charles “is prepared to make concessions to persuade them to attend.
On the table for Harry is “a high-profile seating position in the Abbey or an informal assurance that he will be able to keep his titles as an inducement to attend”.
The big hitch to the King’s plan comes in the form of heir to the throne and the Bane of Necklaces Everywhere, Prince William, who reportedly has qualms over his dear old Dad’s scheme. The Mail has reported that Willy “fears that unless Harry’s visit is tightly scripted, he could steal the limelight by, for example, going on a walkabout in a deprived London borough with Meghan”.
(A quick side note: If two people can “steal the limelight” away from a once-in-a-generation event by doing nothing more grandiose than wandering about Dagenham while people make TikToks then it does not say much about the robustness of the new King’s reign.)
Willy is said to be worried Harold could pull a stunt if he and Meghan come to King Charles’ coronation. Picture: Mark Kerrison/In Pictures via Getty Images Willy is said to be worried Harold could pull a stunt if he and Meghan come to King Charles’ coronation. Picture: Mark Kerrison/In Pictures via Getty Images Anywho, bottom line: Charles wants Harry and Meghan inside Westminster Abbey for his big day and is willing to give the Sussexes decent seats and not stick them behind a convenient pillar or random German cousin who is unusually tall, all in the name of a PR-crisis-free coronation.
Which is to not say that the Duke and Duchess of Netflix are keen as mustard to play ball and are currently teaching their children Archie and Lili how to bow and curtsy or the best way to get a regal Jack Russell off your leg.
That Tony Robbins assertiveness podcast that Harry has been listening to (I’m guessing) would seem to have worked, because, per the Mail’s sources, the Duke wants certain “terms and conditions” to be met in return for their presence.
A source has told the Mail: “All the indications are that Harry is being advised to agree to nothing at this stage and ‘play it long’ right up to the last minute, which is making negotiations with him very difficult.
“Harry’s camp made clear that the idea that he would just attend the coronation and behave himself but then be stripped of his titles was a total non-starter.
“While he might decide at some point to discard his titles of his own volition, he objects to the idea of being forcibly stripped of them.”
(Well, of course he might ‘object’ to them possibly losing their Sussex titles given it is not in their interest to find out if Netflix is quite so generous if the cheques suddenly have to be made out to Mr and Mrs Mountbatten-Windsor.)
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle don’t want to be shunted to the second row at King Charles’ coronation. Picture: Arthur Edwards/WPA Pool/Getty Images. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle don’t want to be shunted to the second row at King Charles’ coronation. Picture: Arthur Edwards/WPA Pool/Getty Images. So let’s zoom out here, bigger picture time and all that.
For Charles, this looks like he is pursuing a containment strategy, some way of minimising the chances of the Sussexess staging some sort of TV tantrum right at exactly the moment Justin is anointing him with oil or he is reciting the coronation oath.
His calculation would seem to be that it is safer to make a few “concessions” and keep the Sussexes’ sweet rather than having to worry about what they might be getting up to in Montecito.
But can or will this appeasement of sorts work? If the King decides to go down this road, would it ultimately work in his favour or could it go down about as well as that time the Archbishop’s chaplain Cardinal Thomas Wolsey failed to help Henry VIII get that divorce he wanted from wife number one?
Is King Charles playing a dangerous game by trying to appease Prince Harry. Picture: Jack Hill/AFP Is King Charles playing a dangerous game by trying to appease Prince Harry. Picture: Jack Hill/AFP Recent history would suggest that Charles is taking quite the gamble here.
In the last 12 months we have had two major royal events – the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee four-day celebration and then her funeral in September – both of which Harry and Meghan not only attended but were on their best behaviour.
They did not stage any rogue walkabouts in Brixton or give any interviews to roving breakfast presenters or do anything so controversial as blink at an inopportune moment. Gold stars all around!
And yet, looking back at both of these historic outings and Harry and Meghan’s very presence hovered, blimp-like, over proceedings. Their very presence back behind Palace gates and The Firm’s handling of their return were huge stories.
After all, what would you prefer to read about? A septuagenarian taking part in a lengthy (well, hour-long) religious ceremony or the latest glamorous instalment in this royal soapie? In getting to watch as the Prince and Princess of Wales clap eyes on the Sussexes for the first time since Spare and all of its juicy, often gossipy, family revelations landed?
Harry and Meghan were on their best behaviour at the Queen’s funeral in September 2022. Picture: Nariman El-Mofty/WPA Pool/Getty Images. Harry and Meghan were on their best behaviour at the Queen’s funeral in September 2022. Picture: Nariman El-Mofty/WPA Pool/Getty Images. The more I think about it, the more I wonder, can Charles win the fight for public and media interest if they go?
Let’s imagine that, come May, Harry and Meghan jet into London and things go swimmingly. We would end up with photos of the Duke and Duchess within lipgloss-sharing distance of the Waleses and no one throwing a punch or bursting into histrionic tears.
Headline writers the length and breadth of Fleet Street would start to busily work on their ‘brothers united’ puns and have to shelve that old favourite, ‘Splitting heirs.’ It would be the biggest – or at least the most clicked, read and shared – story of the day.
Or, let’s imagine that things go the other way and that having the Waleses and the Sussexes sharing a pew would trigger a repeat of Commonwealth Day 2020 when the froideur between the two couples was so obvious they could have triggered a new Ice Age. It would be the biggest – or at least the most clicked, read and shared – story of the day.
A rather frosty Commonwealth Day service on March 9, 2020. Picture: Phil Harris/AFP A rather frosty Commonwealth Day service on March 9, 2020. Picture: Phil Harris/AFP However, the other option for Charles – putting his foot down and issuing a coronation invitation with like it or lump it terms – is hardly likely to work in his favour. It is not as if Harry and Meghan are shy about popping up on TV screens and sharing their feelings about his family.
Harry and Meghan have the King over something of a barrel. (Only the very best sort of barrel of course for His Majesty though.) Spare would seem to have hit its mark and the way things stand now, with just over three months to go, is that Charles is willing to capitulate in order to avoid further dramahhhhh.
More Coverage ‘Out of control’: Charles facing disaster Charles in talks for tell-all interview Lucky Justin Welby, left to “broker” this deal. Here’s hoping that UN Peacekeepers might be able to lend him one of their signature blue berets because he is going to need it.

Suggested Listening
I've heard a few distinct takes on the UN vote and the comparison of the US and Israeli actions in light of it. I don't fully understand everything about the politics around this vote, because it's a complicated dance and trying to understand what people are thinking is close to impossible when we don't know what's going on behind the scenes and what's just political theater... but I think listening to multiple perspectives might get us closer to understanding than just listening to one.
I have provided approximate bias/political spectrum position for each, as well as giving my reasoning or summary of why I think it's a useful listen.
This post includes The NPR Politics Podcast, Democracy Now!, Al Jazeera: The Take, and the BBC Global News Podcast.
To support my blogging so I can move out of my parents’ house, I do have a ko-fi. Alternately, you can donate to one of the charities I list in this post.
The NPR Politics Podcast - March 27, 2024 - Left-leaning, though not as far as some of the others. This contextualizes the relationship between Netanyahu and Biden among the history between Netanyahu and multiple past presidents, including Trump, Obama, and Clinton. It focuses in part on the domestic political dynamics and ramifications that Biden is facing, the question of funding, and the apparent self-contradiction of the US government when it comes to the possibility of conditions, sanctions, or other reprisal if Israel continues to disregard US concerns about the ground invasion of Rafah.
Democracy Now! - Several parts of the March 26, 2024 episode were focused on the UN vote and results - This is a far-left radio broadcast show that gets repackaged for online video and podcast dissemination. This coverage is much more critical, without 'well, maybe they're trying to [action]' as we see in some others, of the United States and its handling of the UN vote and subsequent fallout. The interview with Craig Mokhiber gets into some nitty-gritty details of something called the "General Assembly under the Uniting for Peace," which I didn't really understand. I can't speak to supporting that we take that part at his word, because it's not something I understand enough to endorse. He also refers to the United States as not only Israel's principal sponsor, but also its co-belligerent.

Full story: Jeremy Corbyn Applauds U.N. Ceasefire Resolution, Says World Must Prevent “Another Nakba”
Al Jazeera - March 26/27, 2024 (timezone-dependent, it was the 26th for EST) - I hesitate to place Al Jazeera on the standard left-right scale since it's outside the Western framework, as an independent Qatari news organization with some degree of funding from the government of Qatar. What I will say is that Al Jazeera provides a vital non-Western lens, even if some of the reporters are Western, when viewing politics in the Middle East. In this particular case, it also appears that they had a reporter much closer to the action in the UN than the others, as Al Jazeera has an office in the UN headquarters in NYC.
They also address a few curious things about last-minute negotiations on the floor of the UN, the immediate consequences of the US ambassador referring to the resolution as 'non-binding,' and asserts that the US warned Israel that they would be abstaining this time, which is why the US is seemingly confused at how upset Israel is about it. I'm not sure how intentional it is, but the message I got is that Israel tried to call the US's bluff and was then upset when the US followed through, because the US... wasn't bluffing. And did in fact abstain.
BBC Global News Podcast - March 27, 2024 - Dead center, variably left or right depending on the issue - This is a twice-daily podcast and generally contains three or four separate stories. Their coverage of Netanyahu walking back the cancellation of his officials' trip to the US is first, however, and I'm not sure how much it adds to analysis of the vote, but it is the most recent and has the latest of the updates.

Podcast recommendations: September 2023
the podcasts I listen to the most are the daily ones from news organizations
a ton of podcasts around the world have copied the format of The Daily from The New York Times
I wrote in that post about how I've made a habit of listening to those copycats in my ~target languages~ (Dutch, Spanish) so as to improve my listening comprehension
below are other podcasts that I find interesting
🇬🇧 Good podcasts in English 🇬🇧
Global News Podcast: international news from the BBC that will remind you of the existence of some countries
H3 Podcast: off-the-rails pop culture chats with so much lore that it may feel opaque at first, but it becomes family™ if you stick with it (excerpts: tagged/h3)
The Ezra Klein Show: insightful left-leaning conversations about politics and society, good way to find new books to read
Pivot: banter between an abrasive lesbian journalist [laudatory] and a filthy rich straight guy [derogatory] about media and business
Philosophize This!: philosophy class but not pretentious
Revisionist History: people who don't like Malcolm Gladwell's style because it's not "scientific" are so boring to me istg
