Stone Blind - Medusa’s Story by Natalie Haynes
I love Natalie Haynes’ writing but for me, perhaps this is not her best or more accurately, not my favourite.  But I suspect I am being coloured by the BBC Radio adaptation which I absolutely adored.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/series/m001c65t?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile -  at time of writing, this is not available but I do recommend checking back on BBC Sounds for when it is available at it was brilliant, really funny.
The subtitle of this book is Medusa’s story but really it is as much about Perseus, who Haynes paints as such a dolt it is funny, Andromeda and Athena, who she doesn’t paint very kindly at all, but then none of the gods come off well in this retelling of the myths.
If you’ve never read a Natalie Haynes book, perhaps don’t start with this (see previous Haynes reviews:  https://www.tumblr.com/joebloggshere/738809656810536960/joe-bloggs-blogs-booksbooksfood-anything?source=share  The Children of Jocasta - https://www.tumblr.com/joebloggshere/696825911346069505/a-thousand-ships-by-natalie-haynes-i-loved-this?source=share  A Thousand Ships (Loved this!)  - but if you are a fan of the Greek myths and retellings then this is excellent and certainly changes the perception of Perseus as the hero.
I am currently reading Haynes’ non-fiction book, Pandora’s Jar, and so far, (only one chapter in as just dipping in and out), I am loving this so far so watch this space for a forthcoming review.

BBC Atlantis | Glass Heart Hymn
BBC Atlantis had so much potential that it was going to be even better than Merlin (which is hard to believe). I will never forgive them for cancelling this show right when they setup the main arc of the story. I hope you enjoy💖✨

best female villain tournament!
SEASON 2
RULES:
- Only submit the same character once
- Multiple submissions with different characters are fine!
- Matchups will be posted as soon as I have enough submissions and will include the most submitted characters
-Resubmissions are fine as long as they weren’t on the tourney last time
- Please be as detailed as possible
I had issues on my end with some technicalities and media’s. eg a lot of characters from the hatchetfield musicals by team starkid were just submitted as hatchetfield which made it harder to search for them to identify them and get pictures etc. If those and similar fandoms could be submitted with what musical etc they’re from that would be great :)
Those who sent submissions through my askbox will be getting submitted by me unless it was off anon(because you’ll be getting a notification)

Worse things happen at sea: Art in the Paris 2024 Olympic Opening Ceremony
So everyone has been sounding off about the Paris' Olympic Opening Ceremony. Mainly about the supposed 'insult to Christians everywhere' with the recreation of Di Vinci's 'The Last Supper'.
(I'd like to go on the record that 1. you pose any group of folk in a line facing the viewer with a barrier at hip height and it's gonna look a little 'The Last Supper'-y, 2. clearly the hand wringers had forgotten that the artist was Di Vinci. The man would be pointing and laughing at them and be living it up on that bridge between Nicky Doll and DJ Butch, and 3. Da Vinci painted enough portraits of Bacchus, he would have known what's up.)
Anyway, a lot of art was incorporated and celebrated but there's one piece that did featured that had me performing a mental emergency stop and NO ONE ELSE is talking about it so I need to know I wasn't the only one to spot this.
So, opening ceremony, we're following our mysterious torch bearer as they race through the the Louvre to the strains of 'Danse macabre', (French composer Camille Saint-Saëns). The eyes of the paintings occupants follow their progress until we see frames with empty back drops, the paintings' subjects having come alive to watch the festivities from the windows. But the last empty frame... my people...
Tumblr media
Our mystery guide stands in front of this for nearly 3 seconds, at the 1hr 42min 11sec mark in the BBC coverage. Now, I can't make out the plaque at the bottom of the frame, but I am prepared to place good money that this is Théodore Géricault's 'Le Radeau de la Méduse', or 'The Raft of the Medusa'.
Tumblr media
Completed in 1819, this piece is considered the best work of its' French artist and an icon of the French Romanticism movement. It's chuffing huge, over 16ft by 23ft, and it is stunning.
It also depicts one of the worst events in French maritime history.
In June of 1816, the French frigate The Medusa left France for Senegal on the west coast of Africa. At her helm was a captain who had not sailed in 20 odd years and got the post through connections and political clout. And he fucked it up royally. The Medusa drifted 100 miles off course and ran aground off Mauritania. After 3 days of failing to shift the boat, the 400 or so people aboard has choices to make. They were 30 miles from land and there were 6 boats, room for 250 people. Some stayed aboard the stranded vessel but at least 146 men and one woman boarded a jerry-rigged raft. The plan was for it to be towed by some of the boats, but after only a few miles it was turned loose.
For 13 days, exposure, mutiny, disease, dehydration and starvation ravaged the survivors, whittling nearly 150 down to 15. It was in my fact checking for this that I learnt the lovely little term ‘a custom of the sea’. In layman’s terms, cannibalising your crew mates to survive. They were spotted by chance, no search effort had been made by the French. A further 5 died in the days following rescue. British naval officers helped the survivors to return to France because aid from the French government didn’t appear and the captain, who had made it to land fine, was more interested in recovering the gold on board the Medusa. He was court marshalled and should have been executed, but in the end served 3 years in prison. He was the inciting incident for a law to passed that ensured that promotions in the French military would thereafter be based on merit.
Now all this came hurtling into my head because I remember reading a book called 'Severed' by Frances Larson, all about the cultural and historical fascination with decapitation. There's a section in the chapter of severed heads in art about how Géricault went hard on the research for this painting; visited morgues and hospitals, brought home specimens to watch decay rate, y'know, stuff that absolutely wouldn't blow your safety deposit. But yeah, I'm there with dawning horror and ice in my blood as we look at a very French painting, of a French maritime tragedy, brought about by the hubris and arrogance and incompetence of the higher ups who had no right being there, where comrades and crew turn on each other in a horrific fight for survival, with the spooky dancing bones classical piece playing in the background...
And not 20 seconds later we are rejoining the action of the flotilla on the Seine, 'Fraternité' writ large over the boat with Cyprus, Columbia and Comoros waving excitedly and soggily at us.
Thomas Jolly, opening ceremony artistic director, I need to buy you a drink and we need to chat. I need to study you. I have been turning this over in my brain for a week, what are you trying to say?! Was I the only one to hear it?!

I was actually reminded about this today when I saw totally innocent quote from Unseen Academicals about Medusa in the Watch and left long rant in the tags but I have to write about it again. For those uninformed what would later became BBC America's The Watch (à la the show all the discworld fandom collectively decided doesn't really exist and even if it did it doesn't count anyway) was actually planned to be a crime show taking place in Ankh-Morpork. Pratchett even called it CSI Ankh-Morpork. Can you imagine how cool it could have been?
Like I can acknowledge that discworld books are probably not the easiest material to adapt on screen (although I'm still convinced that it's not impossible and the total failure of that show had more to do with it and it's creators rather than with the sorce materials - there had been much better adaptations than the Watch, even though they too were not perfect and I'm not even speaking about GO, which had very Pratchettian voice and ended up amazing). But with this you wouldn't have to adapt the books, you could write stories for the medium from the start.
Hell, you could even (and I would be really glad) focus on either totally made up characters and/or the ones that were just mentioned and not developed any further - like the Meduse cop lady (I would really liked to have more of the meduse cop lady with sunglasses from Ephebe if someone didn't figure that out xD). That doesn't mean we wouldn't see Vimes, Carrot, Cheri, Angua, Nobby etc. but they wouldn't have to be the main team we would focus on. It would be really fun to interact with the more known characters during the series from the different perspective. Those from the watch but also others like wizards, the Times crew, Vetinari, Seamstresses, Throat etc.
It could be totally episodic or have some overarching plot hidden behind I don't even care. It could have almost no big stakes and I would be totally fine with that. Just different crime cases in the Ankh-Morpork. Bonus points for dwarf gender fuckery, easter eggs that you don't need to know for the story to make sense but would make any books fan happy and Eskarina Smith just because (even just as an easter egg in the form of mysterious lady giving tip for some case - especially if there would be some clues for a hidden overarching plot but even without that it could make sense - time travelling wizard-witch would like to help and I'm sure it can get boring).
Anyway just thik about all of the possibilities.

Next up is the Alive For Centuries Tournament.
Submit a character that is at least 2 centuries old, along with where they come from and (if you want) propaganda through ask or submit a post.
SUBMISSIONS CLOSED
The character does have to be considered alive to count. I know I said otherwise a while back but I have since changed my mind. As a result ghost or vampire characters, to give a couple examples, no longer count for the purposes of this tournament.
Submissions will be closing on the 15th of September.
Top 4 submissions are the ones I submitted myself.

I will never not be salty that BBC Atlantis didn't take off and get to have more seasons to continue to tell its story.
Glad it was able to get even 2 seasons but damn I wanted more. I wish it had gone off and gotten the Merlin treatment.
It's fun and interesting, I love the way it take Greek myths and twists them in new ways, uses Greek characters. Hell just the whole idea of it starting with modern day but Jason, protagonist actually being from this other world? Distant past? whatever of Atlantis and some how having been sent to our world/time by his dad to keep him safe.
And just the wild choice of having Pythagores of all people and Hercules (is he the actual Hercules? Meant to be a child of the Demigod? *shrug* no idea) being Jason's two friends / our secondary protags.
Medusa becoming cursed not by the gods exactly but from something with having opened and looked in Pandora's box (also that we get to meet and know her precurse instead of just starting off with her already a gorgon/all snake hair
Just been rewatching it and ughh god I miss it so much- also trying to track down the DVDs (that aren't UK / non region 2 or 4) is a pain for some reason s2 harder then s1.

Ok this is a Slightly more coherant version of this post. In which I go (as I remember, drunkenly) insane about an almost forgotten TV show. BBC's Atlantis (2013). But now with pictures!
once again if you know it I'm in love with you and kissing you on the lips.
Spoiler warning if you care abt that, but its only 2 series, watch it this afternoon and come back :D
Ok this show is a blatent Merlin profit chaser and apparently had alot of crossover of crew but I have no source for this. There are alot of comparison that can be drawn.
Tumblr media
First for all my Trekkie pals, Alexander Siddig who is Julian Bashir in DS9 plays King Minos. He is beareded, a wife guy, kinda a dilf. pop off.
The second, even for famous face is a very young Anya Taylor Joy. Yeah, ANYA TAYLOR JOY is bald in this? she plays Cassandra the cursed prophet. She is phenomenal, but you have to stick through to season two.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they are the two who stick out to me but take the time to look at the IMDB and you will see some one you know.
In the modern day, Jason (yeah, as in of the Arognaut), the protaganist of the show, pilots a one-man submarine to investigate a deep sea disturbance that resulted in the disappearance of his father when he was a child. When he discovers the location, the submarine begins to fail and he wakes up on the shores of the kingdom of Atlantis He is given shelter by a couple of locals: Pythagoras Herculse
Along the way, they pick up allies including Medusa, a palace maid; Ariadne, daughter of the King and heir to the throne; and a mysterious Oracle. - abridged form wikipedia
All of that in the first paragraph happens in THE FIRST 10 MINUTES OF THE FIRST EPISODE. This summary leaves out in that 10 mins he runs naked across a beach, steals some clothes from fishermen, fights a two headed dragon, and is chased by Palace Gards.
This show is a wild, nonstop, rollacoaster.
If I havent revolted any classistis all ready, or convinced you to watch it let me hit you with the kicker. CANNON GAY RELATIONSHIP. and it is the friends to lovers, betrayal to lovers arc all you tumblrinas love so much. Between Pythagoras and Icarus.
Pythagoras and Icarus.
Tumblr media
This isn't even the scene where they get together, Pythagoras - left, Icarus - right
The payoff is not till the last episode but the build up is lengthy, obvious and worth it. and as I said in my first post, more than you Merlin bitches got.
So. Go and watch this trainwreck, rollacoaster of a show and scream at the blattent shitting on greek myths that is oh so infuriating and a whole lot of fun.
watch and enjoy, i beg you.

stumbled across bbc atlantis on iplayer and holy shit. this show was something. they crammed it so full of recogniseable figures from greek mythology like medusa, hercules, the minotaur and then said "oh yeah and pythagoras is here too. the guy with the triangle theory. he is also here. and he's traumatised and autistic". then in the second season they said "oh, he's gay and his boyfriend is icarus btw"
they made a highly famous mathematician into an overly anxious gay loser and then, to quote that one post about dead boy detectives, they tossed him at tumblr like a wedding bouquet
