so if you are in the mood for a crack fic that’s not explicitally a crack fic this is for you !! okay so i’m really hit or miss with AU’s ,, sometimes i feel like they don’t quite capture the characters right but this story have the BEST dramatic liam i have ever seen in my life !! basically they all live in the same apartment building & it’s fantastic !! i saw this one floating around a lot but the summary didn’t really unrest me until i have it a shot !! so go read it rn !! also nolan & brett are genuinely fantastic and make me wheeze ,, LIKE ACTUALLY VERBALLY LAUGHING !! all i’m gonna say is that my fav characters are scott & the beetles but that won’t make actual sense until you read it !!

Or the one where Theo annoys Liam every morning with his awful singing until he doesn’t anymore and Liam is even more annoyed. Liam hates every single thing about his mornings -the fact that they happen in the morning alone is enough. The thing Liam hates the most about his mornings though is the terrible voice of the guy who lives below him. He can’t sing for shit and Liam tried to politely let him understand that by throwing flour and water on his balcony, and also by shouting it to him, you can’t sing for shit!, and then by writing it into a note he proceeded to attach to his door, but this Raeken guy just keeps doing it, every single morning, like a fucking rooster. Liam did nothing to deserve this. He probably didn’t do anything to deserve better either to be fair, he doesn’t expect to open his window and be welcomed by some angelic voice singing him good morning, he’d just be happy with nothing. Silence. That’s something Liam can appreciate in mornings. Just some bark from his dog and the sound of his misery and that’s it. But no, god forbid the new guy lets him have that.

Summary: A roommate is defined as “a person with whom one shares a room.”

Theo would say a roommate was more along the lines of, “The person who's the bane of his existence. The weirdo that sleeps for days. The spaz that exercises at 3am. The guy with a revolving door of annoying friends. An insufferable human being that Theo has no control over living in his room.”

Example: Theo hates his roommate Liam.

Summary: Theo had been labeled many things in his life. Evil, failure, monster. He'd never thought Father would be one of those things but as he looked across the table to a six year old with blue smears of bubble gum icecream across her face trying to coax the first words out of her sister. Finger jabbing towards Theo's face as she repeated 'Daddy' again and again he couldn't bring himself to dispute the label.

The Problem with HS^2

(And the HS Epilogues)

Ok, so I think I’m gonna do another post on this, because I’m feeling bothered. I’ve been really frustrated because I just couldn't seem to get hype for 4/13, like, at all, and I couldn’t even do any homestuck art today. I decided that I wanted to reflect on why that is.

BTW I AM NOT DUNKING ON ANYONE WHO LIKES HS^2 AND SUCH!! If it makes you happy, go read it! And if you don’t want to see me dunk on something you love, feel free to skip this post! I in no way want to pressure someone into hating something they enjoy, I just want to pull this fucker apart and see why is doesn’t tick.

Ok so first off, the build up. Imagine it’s the tenth anniversary of a property you really love, and word is that something big is dropping today! You sit at your computer and wait and wait, all that hype and excitement building up and then? They drop three chapters of fanfiction. And tell you to wait for the rest. When this happened, I, as someone who’d spent the last four or five years deeply invested in this comic, I legit cried out of fucking disappointment. I know Homestuck is known for trolling, but that was straight up not the way to handle that sort of build up. But I told myself, “Well, the other chapters will be good! I’m sure they’ll bring back the art, or bring the story to an enjoyable conclusion!” And then a week later they dropped the rest. And it was, not great?? Like, it had good concepts, and some scenes that were funny. But overall it was a pretty bad and draining read.

Why?

I think the main flaws in The Epilogues (and HS^2 by extension) are the themes. The theme is Meat and Candy. Basically, too much of one or the other makes for bad story telling. And that’s interesting in theory, but little thing to take into consideration, YOUR THEME SHOULD NOT MAKE YOUR STORY WORSE. Writing something bad on purpose doesn’t make it any less bad. And another big detrimental theme is “Suffering makes a story” and like, NO?? NO NOT REALLY??? That’s not how that works. You don’t need to make your characters senselessly suffer for a good story, like any good writing tool, you use it in moderation. Good writers can make their story interesting without just throwing pain at their characters. The original Homestuck knew not to take itself too seriously and even in the face of suffering and tragedy, it kept a good blend of comedy to keep it from getting dreary.

And I think this focus on Suffering (+ the Meat/Candy binary) really does negatively impact the writing of The Epilogues and HS^2. It feels like by narrowing in on every single bad thing that could possibly happen, and making sure bad things do happen, they’re stretching the character’s to meet these themes. Many characters are basically unrecognizable due to how they’re pulled and stretched to meet the demands of the story, and as a result, characters act different than how they do in Homestuck proper.

Beyond this it also feels like the current team are pretty obsessed with inserting their headcanons and ideas into HS^2, The Epilogues, and Pesterquest, with no care for the source material. I am all for representation! I’m Nonbinary and I’m lesbian! I think rep is important! But going back in and retconning your rep when there’s literally no build up ain’t how that works chief. That’s not proper representation. I think the only character that they really managed to pull that off with was Vriska, and maybe Eridan, but even then it was still a bit shaky for me. But for many other characters (For instance June!! June is cute, but word of god is in no way good rep, especially since June literally has like, no build up or subtext or ANYTHING!) That’s basically the exact same as JK going back and saying Dumbledore (or whoever bc I never read Harry Potter) was gay! That is not rep. Rep requires time and writing, and that’s why I think (hold on a second I’m about to praise this not very good sequel) Nonbinary trans Roxy is done well. They took time to build them up, and their issues, in an authentic way. If you want to put rep in your comic, that’s how you should do it, retconning only alienates your fanbase, and makes characters seem even more out of character.

But beyond this, I think the most damning thing about the Epilogues and especially HS^2 is it’s very foundation. It’s just not built out of the same stuff, and as a sequel that makes it impossible for it to ever properly mimic Homestuck in any meaningful way. What I mean by this is, lets swivel over to look at the Patreon. Yall probably know what I’m about to gripe with. Bonus Updates. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, BY THEIR VERY NATURE THEY GO AGAINST WHAT HOMESTUCK IS. And you may cry, “support the artist!! They’re just trying to make an honest living!!!” BITCH, I am an artist! Lets just look at the content of the Bonus Updates themselves:

The Bonus Updates take place in The Meat Timeline and have potential to become important later on. That is sneakily putting important content behind a fucking paywall, which directly stands against the accessibility Homestuck had for young teens. (And I personally consider it shady practice to accrue more Patreon support) Especially considering that, guess what?? That doesn’t have to be the case! The Bonus Updates could yknow, have focused on the time before the timeline split in order to avoid being plot relevant. Or if the Bonus Updates are plot relevant, they could at least release them later for those who cannot afford the Patreon bill? They could stagger the release, after two months, release the latest Bonus Update? Oh, or they could do something entirely different, such as showing behind the scenes sprites and artwork-- OH WAIT-- They set that to the twenty fucking dollar tier. And another thing that feels a bit anti Homestuck, basing the amount of updates on Patreon support.

Considering their rate is 2000 supporters a month, at the very least that would be 4000 dollars a month, if everyone payed the lowest tier. But most are likely paying the five a month for access the the Bonus Updates, so you could very likely bump that up to about 10,000. This is a ridiculous amount of money, especially considering the lackluster updates, three a month if you take into account Bonus Updates. I’m sure everyone get’s a smaller piece of the cut, and some of that goes into other HS^2 related projects, but that is a lot of fucking money, and definitely more than enough to pay the team if managed well. I don’t think that they should, and I don’t think that they even need, to use bonus updates to force invested fans to pay. If they were confident in the content they produce, they would certainly still have the backers.

Lastly,

Kanaya would not wear this ugly anime ass outfit are you kidding me. And this is also a not well preformed callback panel (like literally all callbacks oh my god none of the old Homestuck gags hit right in HS^2 at all!!) I could understand Dirk (Even though I think him looking more like Bro would have been a cooler symbolic thing but whatever), Terezi’s outfit was a stretch but I’d accept it, but Kanaya??? KANAYA??? You know she has more fashion sense than the entire Homestuck cast combined she would not be caught dead in this outfit.

it's a huge factor. if a comic is amazing in every way but the website or app makes it difficult for me to read i'm simply NOT going to read it. there are a lot of great series that i've put on the back burner just because the website is so annoying to navigate

FYI the worst comic app i've ever experienced is Aqua Kiss which I downloaded to read a single series. it's the most barebones app imaginable with no search bar. if you want to read something you actually have to manually load each calendar week to find it and some stuff are buried dozens of pages back. and to make matters worse it doesn't have a "history" or "bookmarks" feature either

The worst things with sites that I see often are 1: huge headers, and 2: laggy sites (not really site design, but its adjacent I think) Another is if the pages are too big on the screen, so you can't, for instance, see some panels all at once. Those kinds of things can really ruin a reading experience for me

One example of a website that is hostile to the reading experience is ZMYK which for some reason hosts vertical scroll comics but cuts them up into little pieces as if they were comic format so you can't actually scroll through the entire chapter as it was intended to

That kind of thing grinds my gears so much how can something you have to pay for be that incredibly bad

I've also seen some sites that have graphic design issues, where elements are illegible due to their color, and some have very busy and distracting backgrounds. Those kinds of things won't necessarily ruin it, but they're distracting

forward comic's website was doing this weird thing where the further I read the longer pages took to load. Near the end it seemed they were taking 10 full seconds. Still read the whole thing though. Reading manga on shady sites with terrible internet connection as a kid has desensitized me

Oh one comic I was interested in but didn't read because of the site: I was kidnapped by lesbian pirates from outer space. It doesn't have a website. To read it you have to pirate (hehe) copies of the archive.

It's a pretty sad story- the author was young and tricked into giving up the rights to her series

She ended up taking the site down to prevent the company from getting any more money off of it

For me, the biggest thing that deters me from reading a comic is if the website isn't well optimized for mobile (as someone who reads a lot on the go). This includes the images loading bigger than the page, or navigation being hidden on mobile, or glitchy scrolling, or any number of ungodly things. Also, too many ads. That'll turn me away in a heartbeat.

it's a shame because there are genuinely good comics on there you can't read anywhere else?? and i found it because an artist i adore did a series for it but it got AXED after only 2 chapters and after that was pretty much scrubbed from the internet. i think it's a shame because it really had so much potential and it ended before the story was really able to start

it's a screenshot from the app. you can see that it is categorized reverse chronologically by week

the point of aqua kiss is to emulate monthly/weekly style manga magazines but in app form. however i think the execution of this idea was horrendous

Oh no! It must make reading there so challenging. As for me, if the navigation is so hard to understand/pages don't load properly when you click a link or when the website's colours hurt my eyes so much I can't stay there for too long.

Honestly nowadays most of the CMS's out there share the same basic functionality and adaptability, so it's getting harder to screw up on that. Most sites are OK, if only a bit laggy. If the site takes less than 2 seconds to load and it's not so crowded that I have to look for the comic, I'm generally good.

How much bad/inaccessible web design I'll tolerate is directly proportional to how much I care about the comic.

I've dropped a couple series in the middle of the archive just because they changed the site design to screw up the tracking of bookmarking sites, so I would've had to figure out an alternate way to keep track of it, and it didn't seem worth the effort

Oh yeah, I've totally had that happen too where I was deep into an archive, had taken a reading break for a month or two, and came back to find the urls had been updated and my spot was lost it isn't so bad if a comic also has an archive page, but ive stopped reading a few stories that it would have been too hard to track down where I was.

I haven’t had to experience weird websites in a while, but I do sometimes go to an unknown website to read the comic/manga I’m looking for. Mostly what I’ve had trouble with is unnumbered chapters, of that it’s unclear where/how to start reading in general.(edited)

Like, I get to the page for that specific comic and then there’s no easy “start reading here” button anywhere

And when I do find the chapters list, I don’t know which end of the list is the beginning bc it’s unnumbered

So, I always try to read every comic that's featured in the book club all the way through. Like even if I don't particularly like the opening, or if the comic is thousands of pages long, or I don't have time to meaningfully discuss the comic, I do try to at least give the comic a fair shake by reading through the entire archive. There have been four exceptions. One was because of content (it was a gag a day comic, and the content was SO horrible for SO long that I just couldn't stand it anymore. real "punching down" type of humor). Another was because the comic was literally deleted before I could get to it. The remaining two were because the site design/organization were so awful that the comics were unreadable. One of the two comics had a custom built, hand-coded site (I assume), and it just... didn't work properly. Like the "previous" button seemingly took you to a random page, the "next" button and the "latest" button led to the same place, etc. I'm not sure the creator ever bothered to test the site. The other one used some pre-built stuff, so it was ok... but you had to scroll to the top of the page to go to the next page. Not only that, but the author was posting all their comics to the same archive - which means one page would be the comic that was actually meant to be read for the book club and the next few pages were a completely different comic entirely. And this wasn't a gag-a-day either - it was a story based comic, so the three action minimum to get to the next page made things absolute hell to keep track of.(edited)

Not really a design but a site thing: I can't do comics without an archive of some sort. On platforms like Tapas or WT, the episode list serves that purpose perfectly fine. I personally need to be able to see how many pages there are, and I need a way to go to specific pages easily. It might sound like a small complaint, but it's a big thing for me! There have been comics that piqued my interest, but once I saw that there was no archive of any form, I left forever. Sure, I might be missing out, but there are also lots of good comics out there that have accessible archives. My life isn't long enough to read them all, so I'm letting myself be very picky.

I can manage a very basic site just fine. But if a site is hard to navigate, or just makes reading the page/getting to the next page difficult - I'd be likely to give up eventually. Doesn't matter about the quality of the comic, but if it's a chore to just read it, it's going to put me off after a while

For example - when I read webcomics on dA, I was absolutely fine with either the author having a dedicated folder with the pages in order. Another option was to link next and prev pages in the description. But if I had to go find each next page, I just wouldn't.

the comic that alternated storylines & required scrolling back up to go to the next page was Antibunny: http://vinnied.comicgenesis.com/d/20061002.html if you see that page I linked and click next a few times, there's no obvious distinction between the main story and the spinoff story (no, like, header change between the two, and the art style looks similar), so you can see how it'd be confusing to follow and the scrolling is just icing on the cake (it used to be even worse) the only reason I feel comfortable sharing that is because the author uploaded the comics to new sites, and fixed all those issues in the process: http://antibunny.net/

I def like arrows on the top and bottom of pages for sites to be more of a thing, as well as clicking the image for the next page too! Honestly there hasn't been a make or break, mainly preferences, and the most complaints i have are with the mobile formatting. I think most comics have been pretty solid in functionality that i've read, and it's clear that having their own website is becoming mainstream enough for there to be help, tips, and tricks to making it work!

mm archives were mentioned already, and how it can really turn readers away to simply not have one at all? my favorite archive is https://www.vaingloriouscomic.com/comic/archive 's but i've seen some where they attempted an all picture archive and it backfired by just being a page of all empty boxes. this didn't deter me from reading it and it got fixed pretty quick tho~ mine is one of these and its a very chonky slowmoving page cause i uploaded the first 90ish as fullsized pictures. nobody's ever complained so idk if it's ever deterred anyone from reading but i know i gotta fix it someday.(edited)

I would say poor web design is something I have a complicated relationship regarding webcomics. On the one hand, outside of a site being 100% completely broken, I'm willing to sit through a lot to read. So in terms of affecting whether I read a comic the first time or not, there isn't much to say there. But it does affect how engaged I am with the comic. Cause if I can't easily go back to re-read a page, easily find things like character names, have to deal with extreme lag cause the host is garbage, have to deal with eye bleeding color schemes, etc. you can bet your bottom dollar 1 time is all that comic is going to get in terms of reading it. I can only subject myself to so much, and if I don't feel like reading a comic again because of the site itself, I'm going to quickly forget it in favor of comics whose sites don't make me cry. I do give more leeway to sites created by creators in many respects. But professional bigtime hosts like Tapas or Webtoons literally have no excuse for some of their garbage design choices. And some of their design choices are super duper garbage.

At the same time, though, I know from first hand experience that poor design choices are literally influenced by user data for bigger companies. So for every decision I consider stupid- at the same time they probably did the AB tests that showed crappy design A had better results for their conversion rates than user friendly design B.

Rebel mentioned sites that have eyebleedy color schemes and I'm in the same boat; will read the comic, just will be turning down the screen brightness a looot. Sites that have a huge space of extremely neon background that distracts from the comic make me reluctant to read on the site, and I'll look for a mirror before trying. That white background of the 2 big comic hosting sites can at least be affected and turned dark by nightmode when needed, while nightmode doesn't work on half the bright comic sites I've tried it on. u-u

I enjoy sharing behind the scenes stuff with you guys while I write Dancing Queen, but most of the stuff I want to share would be spoiler-filled, so... Instead, have a list of ten things I’ve made fun of myself for, mostly in the form of texts to Jill that vary in tone from whiny to hysterical to banging my head against a wall. The girl’s a saint to put up with me for all these years, but like. Doubly so ever since I started writing this fic lmao

This was originally supposed to be pretty damn short, maybe just the scene that became chapter one. Now it’s at 27k and counting, with tons of places that still need the gaps filled in.

On a related note, I tricked myself into believing I could actually write something that wasn’t a slow burn. I was wrong. You guys still have at least ten chapters before they get together. Sorry. XD;;

I have a playlist made for Dancing Queen (which I will share further down the line). One of the songs on it is Marianas Trench’s “Burning Up”. This song is only there for me to make fun of myself for how often I write Cloud blushing.

A text conversation we had about two weeks ago: Me: Omfg I just realized that this fic has basically just turned into a sugar daddy AU. It’s just “Andrea buys lots of pretty things for Cloud to play dress-up in” I’m dying, help Jill: LMAOOOO HAHAHA fuck I can’t help you bc you just made me laugh so hard I think I was about to choke on my own spit XD Me: Lmao well, I’m glad you got a laugh out of it Jill: Okay but I love it and cloud deserves it lmao Me: I hate myself so much rn. But at the same time I’m kinda just like “Welp. This is par for the course at this point. WELL WE’LL SEE ABOUT THAT-- Me: Let’s see, how many things have I written at this point that I swore I never would? XDDD Jill: Your Muse wants you to know they call the shots LMAO Me: Tbh I have a theory at this point that by saying I WON’T write something I’m actually challenging myself. Like “oh, you don’t wanna do that? No, you just don’t think you can pull it off!” And then I get pissed and have to prove my own brain wrong. Except that like. This whole process happens on an unconscious level and the only thing I’m aware of is a sudden burning need to write a certain fic. XDD -Later- Me: Welp, I forced myself though the rest of the part I was writing, so I’mma send it. Prepare for sugar daddy content, I guess 🤷��♀️

Possible spoiler, if I end up keeping it: I was actively trying to avoid making anything about the crossdressing inherently sexual. And then my dumb brain made me go and write part of a smutty scene revolving around feminization. I highly suspect this is a result of my theory in #4. If I end up finishing it, I’ll probably ask for opinions on whether I should post it or not (or if it should be separated into its own thing so people can choose whether or not to read it for themselves) XD;;

My biases may be showing just a bit. Aerith is basically instantly becoming best friends with everyone she meets, and every woman that Cloud meets is both his best friend and tormentor lmao

Manda has become one of my favorite characters to write, and I’ve given her wayy too many scenes considering the fact that she was in the game so little that she didn’t even get a name and is practically an OC. ...I’m not getting rid of those scenes. XD

I’m apparently the first person to use the Aerith/Tifa/Barret tag. I got a few scenes out that made me really want to include this strange poly relationship, but I honestly have no idea how I’m going to make it work yet. I guess we’ll all find out eventually.

I had to give Johnny an appearance. Do I know why yet? Nope. But I fucking love the boy and he’s hardly in any fics. I had to include him somehow XD

This fic is reaffirming the knowledge that I have a serious weakness for cute girls being silly and flirty with each other. Like, a lot. XD

Bonus: Does it really make any sense for them to be trying every kind of dance I can wrap my head around at a place clearly meant for cabaret performances? Nope! Am I gonna keep doing it anyways? Yep!

OK so i kjnakjffae am procrastinating doin uni stuff so im going to throw together some thoughts I had yesterday about Muriel’s route and his themes of isolation/family being a running theme throughout all the characters stories + foreshadowing for his route in details from the game + in the meaning of his patron arcana card.

Spoilers for the upright and reversed endings for asra, nadia and julian’s routes obvi, Speculation for Muriel’s route, and spoilers for the side stories Travel at Night and Dawn of the Grub

So basically I realised as well about a week ago that each character’s upright and reversed endings can be guessed from the upright and reversed meanings of their patron arcana’s tarot card, which are as follows for the main 3:

Asra (The Magician)

Upright: Now is the time to take action, before all comes to naught. Stay focused: You have a job to do.

Asra concentrates on the goal of saving the world and the two of you end up in a happy, independent relationship because he isn’t distracted by the compulsion to help/protect you constantly

Reversed: Be wary of lies from the mouths of charismatic charmers. They will not keep their promises

You and Arsa make a deal with the devil in the understanding that you’ll eventually be able to reach your friends again, but you both forget about your previous lives as an unforeseen consequence

Nadia (The High Priestess)

Upright: Listen to your dreams; allow intuition to guide you. All will be revealed in time.

Nadia trusts you (from her past when she was in her coma) and her own intuition and you defeat the devil together

Reversed: Be careful of losing touch with your intuition. Do not close your mind to the world's mysteries.

Nadia becomes impatient, deciding she’s the only one she can rely on closes off her own options by becoming too single-minded - sacrificing her humanity to the devil

Julian (The Hanged Man)

Upright: Sometimes, the best strategy is a swift retreat. Take time to regroup and re-examine your options.

Julian listens to you in the confrontation with the devil, you regroup with all the people who care about him and defeat the devil as a team

Reversed: Be careful of stagnation- your own goals have value. They don't deserve to be put on hold.

He sacrifices himself and his own goals to save you, and as a result ends up living as a demon stagnating in his own private version of hell - becoming less and less human

So! We can look the explanations of The Hermit to try and figure out what his plot is going to look like. So we have:

Upright: Look inside yourself for the answers you seek. Take time for introspection in the days ahead.

Reversed: Be wary of retreating too far within your own mind. Others still have valuable things to share.

I feel like these are fairly self-explanatory - in the upright ending you help him recover from his trauma and come to terms with himself and his past - we’ve already seen a lot of the way he just. doesn’t think at all about his own comfort or emotions because it’s clearly too painful in his first couple of books.

In the reversed ending, we may still convince him that his feelings are valid - but that might cause him to reject the reality of his trauma and sever ties with other around him - isolating with you perhaps?

Another thing I’ve been thinking a lot about is connection and how that would relate to his upright and reversed endings. Connection and support with other people besides MC are huge components of the romance arcs for the first 3.

In Nadia’s upright route, you support her in reconnecting with her family, and she learns that she can ask people for help and rely on them to support her, but in her reversed ending you let her keep you like a pet, she doesn’t reconnect with her family, and she becomes single-minded and isolated.

For Julian, in his upright route he also learns that he doesn’t have to sacrifice himself for those he cares about - and that they’ll support him and fight with him no matter what. In his reversed ending, his self-sacrificing tendencies are encouraged and he ends up alone and isolated, and in this ending MC also has the option to stay with him in his realm forever instead of reconnecting him with his family.

Asra’s upright arc revolves around learning that the two of you are individuals, and that he doesn’t have to constantly worry about your wellbeing and can focus on himself. He is reunited with his family and maintains meaningful relationships with other characters. In his reversed ending, you become his whole world and the two of you literally forget anyone else exists - isolating yourselves in your own world.

I think that this is going to be especially poignant in Muriel’s route - especially because he already isolates so much. I was reflecting on the role of family (both found and blood) in the routes of the other characters and I was considering how this might manifest for Muriel.

I was specifically thinking about his past - he was made homeless because Lucio’s tribe attacked his village and his parents had to give him away so they wouldn’t starve. Obviously he hasn’t seen them since they abandoned him, but I’ve replayed two of the side stories recently - Travel at Night and Dawn of the Grub.

We know that a lot of Muriel’s preferences and personality are shaped by the culture he left behind. His favourite colour is green - the colour of his tribe (evidenced by his blanket which was all he had left from them), his favourite animal is a bear (the animal of his tribe - mentioned in Dawn of the Grub), and his favourite flower is the forget-me-not - which is only found growing in colder regions in the South etc etc etc.

I’d been wondering at the circumstances of Inanna’s relationship to Muriel - it’s not like it’s common for wolves to ever be without a larger pack, and in Muriel’s first chapter it’s clear she’s highly intuitive and intelligent, plus she’s been described as his “wolf mom” by the devs. When I replayed Dawn of the Grub I noticed something that stuck out a little more - which was that specifically when Lucio is talking about neighboring tribes he mentions just two - ones symbolised by bears and one symbolised by wolves. I know this is a tiny detail and I may be Reaching but lol hear me out.

It got me thinking about how in other routes the LI ends up reconnecting with blood family in their upright endings. Asra spent at least two decades thinking his parents were dead, but you help him reunite with them. I feel like it’s too much of a coincidence that Inanna watches over/protects Muriel like a maternal figure (that he hasn’t had for a very long time) combined with the fact that the writing specifically mentioned Muriel’s neighboring tribe as being symbolised by wolves, and the fact that we know nothing about his actual family besides that they abandoned him. We only really get to know anything about Asra’s parents in his route - they’re mentioned in Julian’s, but we don’t find anything out about them in Nadia’s either.

My crackpot theory: Inanna was either sent by Muriel’s family (who survived and are living with the wolf tribe) or by Muriel’s neighboring tribe to keep an eye on him. I don’t think this is such a huge leap especially when you consider that a Lot of animals have been shown to talk to each other/communicate telepathically with people (Malak, Faust, Cameo, and Inanna understanding what you’re saying when you first meet her in Muriel’s arc). I think that in his arc his family might try to reconnect with him - which may be facilitated by Morga’s presence - especially since she’s not a huge part of any of the other arcs besides being present at the ritual.

I think that a big factor as to whether or not you get his upright or reversed end will be if you encourage him to reconnect or support him in his isolation. It’d be easy to see why he wouldn’t accept them if they tried to contact him - it’s been a couple of decades and they abandoned him, so of course he would be hurt, frustrated, and want nothing to do with them. I get the feeling that if you tell him that he’s valid in wanting to do nothing with them, it will contribute to his reversed ending (isolation), whereas if you’ve brought enough attention to how he’s feeling so that he can work on himself, constructively managing his feelings, and healing from his past then it will contribute to his upright ending.

Also there’s such a like. dumb teeny tiny line of dialogue that i haven’t been able to stop thinking about, I really can’t remember specifically which route it’s in (either Asra’s or in heart hunter somewhere) where another character comments how he and Asra could be brothers (i think it’s Asra)? And Muriel replies that he doesn’t have any brothers. At first I thought that this was a wink to asriel content in Nadia’s route - that he doesn’t consider Asra a brother bc he might have romantic feelings for him, OR that he doesn’t consider Asra a brother because Asra is nonbinary, however, it might not be that as Nazali is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns but is still referred to as one of Nadia’s sisters? Another option that I’ve been pondering is that it’s a breadcrumb specifically for his route around him actually having siblings who might have been born after he was abandoned! The little line would specifically make sense if he didn’t have any brothers, but might have a sister/sisters instead, and this line would still make sense in its context after more of Muriel’s route comes out.

EDIT: I found it! It’s not actually in the game, but was an ask answered for Muriel’s birthday by the devs here

I feel like it’d also be interesting because it’d provide a different dynamic for Muriel in working out his own feelings about his parents particularly - especially around feeling replaced and unwanted. I also tbh desperately want Muriel to have a younger sibling kjnakkjaf give me good big brother Muriel!!!

Anyway! A very long post but I’m highly excited to see what comes in his route! I’m going to cry!

if we’re not counting fic updates i guess the most recent thing i finished was my piece for @extrasolarzine (WHICH I’M GONNA FINALLY POST A PREVIEW OF THIS WEEK...AAH)!! and well, again i’ve only been writing fic for a couple years but...hmm idk, i mean this piece is very action-y and that’s something i used to have very little confidence about, so i’d like to think that’s something i’ve improved upon!

ha i mean i know for a fact that “if the silence was a song” is my most popular fic both in terms of hits/kudos....it also seems to be the one people rec the most and the one i most often get the reaction of “wait, YOU wrote that??” sdkfjd

also no....i binge-read a ton of voltron fics the summer it came out and then started a fic of my own!

i figure everything has been done before in one way or another so that’s something i try not to sweat it too much about. i try to be original, but there’s also a lot of popular tropes i like so it’s fun to take those and try to make them my own somehow!

i’m not sure if this refers to reading or writing fic but...i guess in general i’m a lot pickier now than i was at the beginning of the fandom?? like i remember at the beginning i’d just kinda read whatever was popular but over time i’ve developed a much better sense of what i will and won’t like lol, and i p much only read things written by friends and/or rec’d to me by friends.

not really?? in fact i seem to gravitate more towards my super long complicated aus even knowing they’re not gonna gain as much attention lol.

no i’m a masochist so i continue writing the aforementioned super long complicated aus even when it feels like i’m just dropkicking updates into the void lmao. but tbh even if literally no one was reading my multichap fics i’d probs still write them bc they’re fun to write and i love them a lot, so!!

ha i mean, again i like all my fics and i’m happy i wrote them all but...i guess probably “a truth in the blood”? dgmw i still like that one a lot and i’m glad a lot of people enjoyed it, i’m just not as like emotionally attached to it as i am to my other fics (probs cuz i wrote it in like two weeks haha).

ummm i’d say it’s defo “the stars are bound to change.” idk man like i really poured my soul into that one and it’s so rare someone tells me it’s their fave....i have this particular soft spot for it that whenever someone tells me they love that one i’m like *SOBS*...THANK YOU.

20. Have/Would you ever rewrite a fic? If yes, would you take the original down?

probably not?? there’s some things i’d probs change a bit in some of my fics but there’s nothing that i would rewrite completely.

i gotta admit i don’t think i’ve ever done that...? i usually don’t start looking at someone’s fics unless they’ve been rec’d to me or like unless we’ve become friends and i then find out they write fic.

i’ve never gotten a truly mean review really. *knocks on wood* i think the only slightly negative one i can think of off the top of my head was someone who complained about the end of “the stars are bound to change” and said it was too abrupt but...i don’t think they intended it to be super malicious or anything, and like, i get it bc i wasn’t 100% happy with the ending either. but oh well can’t win ‘em all.

25. What constructive criticism, however well-meaning, always makes you feel bad when you see it in a review?

again i haven’t really gotten much negativity or criticism in comments so uh...*shrugs* and i’m p good at taking constructive criticism i was a creative writing major sdkdj

i’ve only ever written single-fandom fics and don’t have a desire to ever write a crossover fic so lol.

Black & White; The Invitation

Yo, so I’ve decided I will start this series and before anything else, I am going to state that my updates are most likely going to be random, but I will try and post a new chapter at least once a week. This will keep you guys on your toes and (hopefully) not bored. This is entirely told from the 3rd POV, but if you guys/gals would rather it be 1st person, I can do that too.

Also, I will continued to answer asks and such every now and then, if you want to stick to the consistent updates of this series, I suggest you turn on notifs for me just in case.

Don’t forget to vote. I’ll set a limit of 72 to 120 hours (three to five days) from when the fic was originally posted. I’ll throw in a reminder and a time stamp at the end of each update too.

How long will the series take? I’m not sure. School’s starting back up again so I hope to finish this before/around October. Maybe. We’ll see.

[Side Note: This’ll probably be the most boring chapter bc a lot of intro and such so bear with me on this one, Great.]

The second the letter slid through their doors, they all felt goosebumps raise. Who even sent letters anymore besides the IRS? Nobody. Except grandparents. But do they ever write to their grandkids anymore?

Jack was the first one to open his. He tore into it, the curiosity being a normal attribute of his that never stopped him. The actual letter had a red trim along the edge, shiny and fancy. The words were written in big, loopy cursive that could only be predated to that of a fancier age in history.

Mark stared at his own card, almost startled by how clean it looked. Elegant, some would say. But... for what purpose? He couldn’t tell. The other nine invitees couldn’t figure it out either.

It was simple. A little invitation to a “fun gathering” of some sort in what appeared to be a small estate upon looking at it, but once up close, it resembled a mansion. The walls pale and brown, the front steps a soft gray that could’ve resembled plastic but it was clay. The road into the estate was neatly paved, as if it was polished clean day in and day out.

“I’m sorry.” Mark interrupted the silence of the car ride. “Where exactly are we?”

The chauffeur look into the rear-view mirror and glanced at Mark and Amy where they sat quietly.

“Or... not,” Mark mumbled quietly as he looked back out the tinted windows to see they had entered a set of gates. Multiple cars all came around a large fountain that stood in front of the mansion, the chauffeurs all exited and opened the doors unanimously, like clockwork.

Mutters of “thank you’s” and “goodbye” were what was left before the cars drove off in file. The ten invitees all stood at the foot of the steps that led to the great, white doors that awaited them. One by one, they all clambered up in fancy gowns and attires as they reached the doors. A small doorbell called to Mark’s name, he pressed down on it once. Seconds passed before the doors opened majestically to reveal decor that came from a fairytale.

A sparkling chandelier hung above their heads at a great height, the diamonds and shards of glass that twinkled had them mesmerized. The floor was marble, intricate designs of the most wealthy of symbols and twirls were outlined in different shades of marble. Standing in the center stood a man with slightly tanned skin, almost caramel, his hair swiped to the side magnificently and a smile that reflected his bright white teeth.

“Welcome. I’m glad you could arrive. How was the ride?” He asked, voice high and cheerful. This set off alarms in Ethan’s head.

A chorus of compliments came from the guests and the man spread open his arm, pointing toward an entrance toward what must be a dining room.

“Right this way, folks.”

Everyone mumbled and spoke amongst themselves. Their conversations hushed and confused.

Eventually they found their way into a large room with a long dining table, some small appetizers placed along the narrow path, some people made their way to the table almost immediately.

“Please, seat yourselves and dig in to what food is there. The main meal will be served in just a moment,” the man said, smile bright and friendly.

“Is it just me or is this place kinda creepy?” Ethan mumbled to Amy. She shrugged as she popped a shrimp into her mouth.

“I don’t know, but the food is good,” she said chewing another shrimp that she’s manged to take down. The rest of the guests are all familiar faces that he’s seen and met before.

There was Dan and Phil over to the right of him, analyzing the lettuce wraps as if they’d jump and bite them. There was Rosanna, from Nerdy Nummies, talking to Mathew and Stephanie from Game Theory. Signe and Jack were staring at the decorations on the walls behind them. Then Ethan, Amy and Mark hovered next to the dinner table as Amy and Mark ate the food.

Ethan had came for Tyler, he had gotten sick and couldn’t make it but gave his invitation happily to Ethan. Which, he now regretted considering he got chills all over the second he got into that car.

“Please, take a seat. No need to stand and meddle. Let’s get to know each other, how about that?” The Kind-Man asked. Everyone took his advice, finding a seat and sitting down. “I’ll start. I am your host, my name is Lucas and I am newly engaged. I help run a catering business with the love of my life in town.”

Everyone stares at him and he nods his head over to his right.

“Oh, uh, my name’s Dan. I know all of you, thank God, and presumably we all do YouTube here? So let’s get that out of the way first. Secondly, I am single and ready to cry.”

They each go down the table, one by one. Phil was nest, and they followed order until they reached Signe, who sat on Lucas’ left. By the time they finish introducing themselves, as if it wasn’t an everyday normality, a maid and a butler walk in from a swinging door, presumably to the kitchen with trays of food.

And all of the food that was soon placed on the table was mouth watering.

“A toast,” Lucas said, raising his glass before everyone reached simultaneously for trays of food, “to a night of fun surprises and reckless memories.”

Everyone raised their glass and cheered weakly, before taking a drink and setting them down to start eating. The food was even better than it looked. In just a few minutes, Ro stole half the cornbread and Jack was stuffing himself with all the sausage links on his end of the table. Lucas’ plate seemed almost empty with few contents on it while the rest seemed to have loaded theirs up.

In the middle of chatter and witty banter, Signe excused herself to go touch up on makeup. She left the table and quietly walked off, asking the maid in the process where the restroom was.

Down the hall and to the right, she entered, locking the door behind her. She stared at herself in the mirror, seeing she had smudged some of her lipstick and her wing was starting to droop. She snatched a wipe from her clutch, wiping away the rest of her lipstick since they were eating after all. Tried to touch up her wing, scoffing as she did so when she wiped off too much.

She spent a good minute or two attempting to reapply it when she heard a knock.

“Occupied!” She said, trying not too move too much as she came close to finishing. Another harsh knock and she sighed. “Just a minute! I’ll be out soon!”

Once successfully saving her makeup dilemma, Signe closed her clutch and opened the door.

“Jaysus, someone’s impatie--” She began to mumble before being struck on the head. She groaned, hand on her temple where she was hit as she stumbled back into the bathroom. The figure followed her and closed the door behind them, locking it in the process.

The chatter in the dining room continued, everyone carrying on their conversations happily as they ate, unaware of the sounds of Signe’s sudden despair. As the minutes ticked by and Jack grew lonely, he spoke over everyone else at the table.

“Hey, can someone check up on Signe?” Jack asked, looking at everyone else. “She’s been gone for a while and I’m just worried she didn’t get lostin this big house.”

Everyone exchanged glances, many of them silently begging not to leave the amazing food behind.

“Sure,” Ethan replied after the conversations stopped.

“No, I’ll go,” Dan said, “I need to use the loo anyway.” The two men stood up almost simultaneously, they stared down one another awkwardly before looking at Jack who suddenly felt the pressure.

He didn’t understand why this felt like such a big decision. He’s sure Signe’s fine, but he’s just worried. What could he do?

there are very few ships that i actively wished that i shipped but a lot of the time i wish that i shipped a ship that was more popular in a lot of my fandoms, like i like the pairing itself but i wish that just ONCE i could ship the most popular ship in a fandom for all the content

looking back on my ff.net account, which was my first Online account, the first thing i ever contributed to any fandom was a sonny with a chance fanfiction back in july of 2009.

ajflkdasf i definitely have, i have this han solo edit that was kind of my first “cracky” edit that i ever posted and then i have the best post i ever made (my riley “look what you made me do” edit) and i also think my girl meets world incorrect quotes would also fall under this category

hm, i would maybe say the walking dead? i’ve considered myself part of the fandom for like 3 years even tho there was a solid like 9 months where i didn’t post any original content, i’ve been a fan for a long time and have plenty of original content to show for my time in the fandom

G: What was your first fandom?

honestly?? probably like late 2000s disney/nick shows ajkfldjasf, that’s what all my earliest fandom contributions are for and considering i was joining the internet fandoms at like age 13, it makes sense

H: Do you prefer real-life TV shows or animated TV shows?

real life! the only animated show i’ve ever been super into is bob’s burgers, which is like my favorite show of all time, but most of my other favorite shows are real life, not animated.

I: Has tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?

tumblr has never ruined an entire tv show fandom for me but it’s definitely ruined ships/shipping fandoms for me, like a lot of times if a shipping fandom is really like rude towards one of my favorite characters that’ll make me stop being a fan of that ship/that ship fandom.

J: Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over tumblr.

tbh most fandoms that i join, i join them because of tumblr like i distinctly remember the walking dead being all over my tumblr and originally having no desire to watch it but all the gifs and edits that i saw made me really interested eventually so i caved and watched it. the same kind of goes for girl meets world too.

K: How do you feel about the other people in your current fandom(s).

I HAVE TO SAY that most people in the rucas fandom are pretty wonderful and all things considered the rucas fandom is probably the nicest shipping fandom i’ve ever been in like obviously there are sour apples in every fandom, but most rucas shippers are pretty sweet, i will also say that i’ve never met a mean gleggie shipper which i’m Thankful for.

L: Your favorite fanartist/author gives you one request, what do you ask for?

considering my favorite gifmaker AND fanfic author is maggie @friarlucas aka my bestie, i like to think that i have more than one request BUT if i only had one and am not allowed to request the next chapter of atlp, i would request a follow up to her hp au fic where lucas fell off his broom

at the beginning of our friendship, samantha @jakeamys kinda pulled me into the dylan o’brien fandom tbh, that’s really the only time i can think of something like that happening tho

HONESTLY probably the gleggie fandom, when i was more firmly in that fandom every single person that i met was an angel and i also have to say that i always felt like most gleggie shippers loved both glenn and maggie and truly just wanted to see them together and just genuinely loved their scenes and that’s all you can ask for which i love, i hope all my gleggie shippers out there are doing well bc i love them all

OK so an au i’ve had on my mind for like a week that i have yet to post abt is a zombie apocalypse au for riley and lucas where the apocalypse happens when they’re in college (+ dating long distance) so riley is in nyc and lucas is in texas so obviously they have no way to contact each other and they’re really far apart and they have no idea if the other one is still alive and then like a year or two into the apocalypse riley is living at this community/camp and one day lucas randomly shows up bc like he was wandering around the area and ended up getting hurt and needed help and he has no idea riley is there and wow they reunite and it’s beautiful

i used to be really into riley and maya and i just kind of lost interest in them, i realized that i just didn’t like them as much as i thought i did so i don’t really consider myself a shipper of them anymore

Kaisoo; Copycat pt. 2

part one

Sorry about the long wait y’all. I went to the Monsta X concert last Sunday and then all this week I had Chinese class, and I just took my final for the class. With the extra free time I sat down to write out this chapter. Enjoy :)

~ Δ ~ Kyungsoo’s comment section on his latest post on instagram explodes with fans saying that a fan-war broke between the Soos (Kyungsoo’s fans) and Ninis (Jongin’s fans) on instagram and twitter. Kyungsoo is known for his sweet, melodic voice and Jongin is a promising dancer who takes cute selcas every single day. The Soos accuse Jongin of imitating Kyungsoo, as he always uploads dance covers of the songs that Kyungsoo covers a day after Kyungsoo releases them. Feeling sorry, Kyungsoo leaves a private message on Jongin’s twitter.

~ Chapter Two ~

That morning Kyungsoo sat at the head of his wooden table, coffee mug in hand. His expression, painted with self control and complete composure stared at the laptop seated in front of him; Twitter browser opened up to his home feed. He brought up his mug up to plush lips, glasses fogging up with condensation as he left it there. Letting the warm and welcoming aroma hit his nose, he exhaled with content, sipped, and set it back down gently in its coaster. He sat patiently waiting for his glasses to clear up, and thought about what he was about his next move.

It’s the right thing to do. I need to get in contact with Jongin.

Jongin. Jongin. Jongin, Jongin, Jongin. Just his name sent a small tremor up Kyungsoo’s spine. Flashes of the dancer’s smirk appeared in his mind and a small pink hue tinted his cheeks. Shaking his head, he decided to put his mind to use. He quietly cracked his fingers and rolled his neck, feeling a bit too stiff. Looking again at the laptop screen, he quickly typed in “jongin” into the search bar, hoping for something to pop up. And boy, it did. Fan pages, daily picture accounts, body appreciation pages (that Kyungsoo totally did not click on) and so on. Deciding to take this to Google, seeing as he couldn’t find any official account, he types in “jongin dancer twitter” and is relieved to see that the first result is said dancer’s twitter account.

Now anxious, Kyungsoo quickly clicks on the link, sending him back to the twitter website, and is met with the smiling face of Jongin and Fuck, Kyungsoo thinks.

“He’s gorgeous.” He whispers to no one, face flushing. Clearing his throat he scrolls down the feed and sees cute selca after cute selca, posted daily. The more he scrolled, the more his infatuation grew - not that he’d ever admit it to himself. Bless him, he smiles, mirroring a smiling Jongin in a recent picture. Deciding that it was creepy to stalk his profile like how he was, he knew it was time. Opening the Jongin’s DM’s he started typing carefully:

Good Morning. My name is Do Kyungsoo and I know you probably don’t know who I am, or maybe you do but anyways: sorry to bother you like this, but I feel like I have an issue to clear with you. It’s not that I’m accusing you of anything, on the contrary I believe that creativity should be shared and the internet is a platform created for broadcasting and showcasing talents of all kinds, but I was just wondering if you were watching my videos and making them your own? Again, I’m not accusing you of anything, I just wanted to address this issue because many people are sending me messages through social media regarding correlation between our uploaded videos. When you have time please message me back.

Before he could regret it, he clicked enter. And took a deep breath, nodding at his attempt to sound controlled. Almost immediately though, the check-mark appeared at the bottom of the screen and Kyungsoo closed the tab fearing his life. Deep breaths Soo, he told himself, and gave himself a minute more of buffer time. Ready, he reopened his Twitter browser to already see a DM notification. Nervous, he clicked on the tab and read some of the conversation:

Thank you for contacting me, I have been waiting for your….

Waiting? For him? Jongin was waiting for him? He opened the chat:

Thank you for contacting me, I have been waiting for your message. I too have been receiving messages from your fans and mine, and I have seen how bad some of them have gotten to be. I also apologize since it is true, I did copy your video songs. If I’m going to be honest with you, I’m not sorry about it either, in fact I had hoped you would notice some way or the other.

Kyungsoo blinked. What? Who in the world…. Did he just admit…. He did, didn’t he? He just admitted to copying my videos. He read on:

Truth is, I’m a fan of yours, scratch that, I’m a really big fan of yours. And I wanted to collaborate with you, but we’re on different sides of youtube so I’d figured I would need to do something big yet secretive so that if I did it a lot it wouldn’t go unnoticed for long. Whaddya say Hyung?

“H-Hyung?” He repeats. Does he think he’s being cute? The corner of his mouth twitched. Okay, he is cute, but still what the fuck, you can’t just openly admit to something like that and then brush it off like it’s okay. He took another sip of his coffee. Hm? What’s this? Another message popped up.

When are you free? I also live in Seoul.

Excuse me??? Kyungsoo choked on his coffee. He quickly typed:

How are you expecting me to willingly meet with you even though you went through this extreme of fanaticism?

Because I went through this extreme of fanaticism for you to notice me, you should feel flattered.

Kyungsoo scoffed, this Jongin is something else, if he weren’t so darn cute I would’ve told him to go fuck himself already.

Besides, aren’t you at least a bit interested in me too? You must’ve seen my videos as well. Not to brag, but from one talented being to the other, my dancing must’ve been quite something if you had even bothered to look at it. I’m quite good aren’t I? ;)

Is he flirting with me right now? The nerve of this man! Kyungsoo huffed, looking at the screen, his eyebrows furrowing. He sighed, knowing that he still needed to clear up this issue.

I’m going to choose not to answer that last question. I am free today.

I’d knew you’d come through Hyung! Do you know Cafe Dalssi in Gangnam? I’ll meet you at 3:00pm. I’ll get a booth in the back for us ;) See you there! <3

Seeing the last text, Kyungsoo knew that the conversation had ended. Cafe Dalssi, of course he knew that place, it was one of his favourite cafes, did Jongin happen to know this already? Kyungsoo looked down at the watch resting on his left wrist, 11:29 am. This gave him quite a few hours to get ready for his day.

Feeling his stomach grumbled softly, Kyungsoo blushed softly. How can small things like bodily function still make him feel shy? Grumbling at the loss in his cool, Kyungsoo stands up from his chair, heading over to the cupboards below his sink. Crouching down, he opens the cabinet and reaches for the cat food. “Toby~” He calls out, “where are you?~~”

Upon smelling the food that would only appeal to animals, a large grey cat ran in through the living room into the kitchen. The cat meows affectionately, clearly loved by his owner and vice versa and Kyungsoo smiles. He cracks open the can and sets it carefully onto the floor next to Toby’s hard kiblets and water bowl. Smelling the pleasing salmon, Toby digs into his food and Kyungsoo pets his soft fur. I wonder if Jongin would like Toby... He laughed, Right, more like would Toby like Jongin…

But then he stopped laughing, where did that come from? Why would Jongin even meet Toby? Shrugging off the thought, he rose back to his full height and washed his hands in the sink. Walking to his room he grabbed for the laptop on his table and wondered what else he should do before their meeting.

Little did Kyungsoo know that when he had been scoffing and huffing from Jongin’s texts, the said dancer had been hiding from the screen of his phone behind the human sized plushies on his bed, fanboying and anxiously waiting Kyungsoo’s replies. His eyes curved into half moons as he squealed in delight, the ends of his mouth tugging upwards revealing straight, white teeth.

PS/ SS - Chapter 3 - The Letters From No One

Oh gosh when will the sad Dursley content end??? This is the worst. I want Hagrid. I want Hogwarts. I have this infuriating need to research dates and times, so here’s to sad research I guess. ... Harry was given his “longest-ever punishment” in his cupboard. Starting at Dudley’s birthday and ending when “summer holidays started”. Dudley’s birthday is June 23. And I’ve been doing a bit of digging on the average school schedule for Surrey, UK I’m a bit out of my element, but I think I see that the “Surrey County Council’s” website here says that last year summer term ended on July 21. That makes 29 days (counting Dudley’s birthday). In 1991 it might have been different, but probably not much. That is a whole month. There are no words.

Dudley knocked down Mrs. Figg on his bike, and it’s terrible, but the way JK wrote it made it sound comical almost cartoon-ish bc the woman was on crutches trying to heal from breaking her leg from a month ago. It’s written as slapstick and I feel bad for laughing at it almost.

Bev, you replied to my chapter 2 about Yvonne. We both mentioned our thoughts that it’s not likely that she was nice, if she kept company like Petunia. Here is Dudley following his mother’s footsteps, by having his “gang”. Terrible people like to find other terrible people to enable their actions.

I did a bit of Googling on Smeltings to see if it had any real-life relevance, and I enjoyed this brief forum thread of pictures of the over-the-top uniforms at similar-ish schools. Like Dudley’s uniform seemed too impossible to me, but I get the joke now lol. “maroon tailcoats, orange knickerbockers, and flat straw hats called boaters. They also carried knobby sticks”

To you, Nick and Laura, bc you two may not read the US editions. In your books is the public secondary school that Harry almost went to called Stonewall High? I thought that high school was an American thing.

“’They stuff people’s head down the toilet the first day at Stonewall,’ [Dudley] told Harry. ‘Want to come upstairs and practice?’

‘No, thanks,’ said Harry.’The poor toilet’s never had anything as horrible as your head down it -- it might be sick.’”

Harry is so clever. Look at that twist of a phrase! That’s an impressive joke for an almost eleven year-old kid. Like he probably didn’t watch a lot of tv or anything this is just raw talent. Honestly, there is not a single good reason as to why he wouldn’t be good at writing essays for school when he applies himself.

[After hearing Dudley being praised for his appearance in his school uniform by his parents.] “Harry didn’t trust himself to speak. He thought two of his ribs might already have cracked from trying not to laugh.” /// One of the worst/ best feelings that I know of.

That is quite the large wax seal if Harry could make out all four animals. And it’s purple, which I’m glad about. When I was a kid watching this scene, I didn’t think that it was a wax seal. Bc the envelope was ripped from Harry’s hand and there was a red seal, I thought Harry got a nasty paper cut for years. It seemed a bit unnecessary to have in the movie.

Harry’s non-reaction to the letter saying “cupboard under the stairs” is the most unrealistic thing in this series tbh.

Why did Petunia not ever imagine that Hogwarts sending Harry a letter was a possibility???

The Dursleys moved Harry upstairs in fear that the letter writers would call the authorities on them I bet. This was probably Dumbledore wanting to strike paranoia into The Dursleys. Good.

Dudley’s terrible temper tantrum astounds me. He threw a living animal “through the greenhouse roof” and hurt his parents. I haven’t read this in a while and I’m shocked again.

On the flip side, here’s JKR’s (literal) slapstick humor again: “After a minute of confused fighting, in which everyone got hit a lot by the Smelting stick”

An almost eleven year-old Harry: figured out that, since the letter writer knew he moved rooms and knew that he didn’t get his first letter, that Harry should expect more future attempts at correspondence, and also repaired an alarm clock. Can we please put to rest the fanon that Harry was “unintelligent” and “unobservant”??? And also do the same for Ron too, bc I hate those unfounded claims for Ron as well.

Is friutcake more of a thing in the UK/ England?? I’ve watch a bit of The Great British Bake off and I’ve seen a bit more positive reaction to it and Vernon is eating it here without it even being remotely close to Christmas. And somehow I still remembered that JK likes fruitcake. omg I feel like I need to lay down after remembering that very tiny detail from last year. How does the brain work? I don’t remember where my junior prom was at (and a friend asked me that just last week) but I can remember a tiny tweet from March of last yearrrrr???

I just want to know what kind of “nasty letters” the post office were taping to the Dursley’s door saying, “stop boarding up your door we can’t do our jobs.”

They have a milkman. Was that still a thing then??

I would PAY to have Dumbledore and McGonagall’s POV of this chapter. I would pay a lot. I bet it would be filled with both of them fuming and then later laughing bc “Hey Dumbledore, what if we sent a hundred letters to the front desk!!” “OMG, Minerva, that is inspired. Let’s do it.”

Dudley asks the question “Daddy’s gone mad, hasn’t he?” in both the movie and the books, but the movie made Dudley look sympathetic. The book says Dudley asks this “dully”. There’s no concern here.

Its nice to imagine how many letters and bills that got lost to the Dursleys when they left before unblocking the mail slot.

This scene of them on the boat going towards the shack reminds me a lot of Harry and Dumbledore riding in a boat to get the Horcrux.

Harry shivering under a thin blanket on the ground is similar to one of the night’s rest I got during my camping road trip last year. I feel so sad for this tiny child bc it was miserable for like that hour before I woke her to ask if we could layer our sleeping bags and cuddle with her and her dog. It rained that night too and I woke up to a slightly damp sleeping bag bc I happened to sleep touching the side of the tent. lol The personal story was free of charge.
