So my question for you: What is your craziest “truth is stranger than fiction” moment you have experienced in real life

Okay, so I have a couple.

I went to high school with two guys from The Fray, Dave and Ben. In my junior year, I sat next to Ben in English class and we absolutely terrorized our teacher. She'd been hired last minute to replace a teacher that was going to be on maternity leave the whole semester. I had no idea he was a musician at all, let alone that he was in a band. The first time I became aware of The Fray I just pointed to their album cover and was like, "OMG I HAD ENGLISH CLASS WITH HIM"

The second one was way back in the mid-90s when I was still a wee grade school kid. I think I was in 5th or 6th grade? Anyway, one of the pitchers for the high school varsity baseball team came to do something with us in our gym class. We were outside near the where we had a baseball diamond and this pitcher took a baseball and threw it from the outfield right over the center of home plate and broke the wooden backstop. That pitcher ended up being Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies legend Roy Halladay.

Hi, thanks for the ask! For the MC’s familiars:

American goldfinch: friendlier, more outgoing

European starling: kind of a pain, a little bit mean

Red-winged blackbird: more aloof, mysterious

Blue jay: lowkey a jerk, energetic and kind of obnoxious

Black-capped chickadee: nervous, a little shy

And I want to reiterate that familiar personality =\= MC personality. It will be totally independent, just something I added to make choosing different familiars a little bit more fun and is vaguely related to the actual bird species behavior for some of them

And the ROs familiars: (which are more related to the ROs than the actual birds, probably)

Definitive voices are those that I just can’t unhear as the voice for the character eclipsing all others. Good voices are those that do just fine but either could have done better, suffer from comparison to better voices in other renditions of the character, or sound too similar to other renditions for it to matter. A/N: a continuation of Creedence. Also, having read @ijustreallylovethem‘s Day One, Done and Celebrating Baby Pogue’s Birthday, I just wanna write JJ interacting with children. Think there’ll be one more part after this if people want it.

Summary: JJ helps you babysit your niece for the afternoon.

A dull thud sounded from the living room and you peeked around the corner, afraid to leave the grilled cheese you were cooking for too long, as you inspected what the noise was. There on the carpeted floor JJ laid sprawled on his back, Bea on top of him, and her miniature trampoline sitting near his legs.  

“I got you!” Bea shouted triumphantly as she sat up, patting JJ’s stomach with her tiny hands.  

“You got me.” He agreed, over dramatic groan making your niece giggle. He laid there for a second, unmoving and then he grabbed her sides, making her shriek in surprise as he sat up quickly, tilting her back so she was laying in his lap, and proceeded to blow raspberries onto her stomach.  

Bea had watched Elmo in Grouchland enough times that she was obsessed with raspberries. She blew them all the time and it drove your sister nuts. JJ, on the other hand, always egged on her antics, just like he was doing now. She giggled and pushed her hands against his face and hair until he stopped suddenly. You’d stepped back into the kitchen and JJ had heard the loose floorboard in the doorway creak as you walked over it.  

He put Bea down and stood up, holding his finger to his lips to tell her to be quiet as he walked into the kitchen. You were at the refrigerator, back turned to the pair of troublemakers, when JJ grabbed you around the waist and pulled you into him.  

“JJ, stop,” you laughed when he pressed his mouth to your bare shoulder and blew a raspberry, Bea cheering him on. “Both of you are the worst.”

Your best friend rested his chin on your shoulder, still holding you pressed against him, and turned the two of you around to face Bea, who was watching happily from the doorway. She liked JJ almost as much as you did and after he helped babysit, she’d talk about him for days.  

“Can you believe it Bea?” JJ asked, eyes meeting the four-year-old's, “she said we’re the worst.”  

“Because you are,” you said, turning your head to the side to see him. He was closer than you expected, noses almost touching as he looked at you. He smiled and you could feel the nest of butterflies that always erupted when he was around beginning to flutter.  

“JJ!” Bea called, drawing his attention away. He let go of you, slipping away to pick Bea up. She squealed when he lifted her above his head and then rested her on his hip.  

“Ask her what’s for lunch,” JJ whispered, loud enough that you could hear.  

Bea nodded at him, “What’s for lunch?”

“Yeah, what’s for lunch?” JJ echoed.  

“Grilled cheese and soup.” You replied, “for a rainy day.”

After lunch Bea insisted that JJ be the one to put her down for a nap when you told her that she needed some sleep. You cleaned up lunch and picked up a couple of the toys that JJ and Bea had left in the living room while he put Bea to bed. When he came back out of her room you were sitting on the couch, clicking through the Disney app.  

“She is officially asleep.” JJ announced, stepping onto the mini trampoline and bouncing up and down, “did the voices and everything.” Bea always insisted that voices accompany her story time and apparently, surprisingly, JJ did the best voices.  

“Thank you.” You couldn’t help that part of that giddy feeling you got whenever JJ was around came from him helping you babysit. It wasn’t exactly healthy, since he was only your best friend, but you couldn’t help imagining, every time he was over helping with Bea, what it would be like if she was your kid. Ten years from now, the two of you living in a little house on the cut, far more than friends, with a Bea of your own.  

“What?” JJ asked, hopping off the trampoline and coming over to sit next to you on the couch.

“What?” You repeated.

“You’re looking at me funny.” He replied, raising his eyebrow as he looked at you suspiciously.  

“I am not.” You said, rolling your eyes as you tried to play off what you were sure were your ‘heart eyes’ as Sarah called them.  

“Okay.” JJ said, leaning back against the couch and crossing his arms behind his head.  

“Do you wanna watch something or not?” You asked.

“Alright, alright,” He conceded, dropping one arm around your shoulders and grabbing the remote with the other. “But not Moana again cause Pope made fun of me the other day when I was singing one of the songs.”  

“Why would we watch Moana together?” You asked, taking the remote back.

“Cause it’s a dope movie. And the part with the grandma always makes me cry.” JJ replied, grabbing at the remote.

“I love you.”  

“What?” JJ asked, sitting up a little straighter, caught off guard.  

“What? Nothing,” you held the remote away from him, clicking on a movie, “have you ever seen The Great Mouse Detective?”  

“No, but don’t change the subject.” He said, taking the remote and pausing the show. “You said you loved me.”

“Yeah,” you shrugged, trying to play it cool, “you’re my best friend of course I love you.”  

“Yeah okay.”

“That’s what it is!”  You replied, glaring at him.

“You love me,” he sang, grinning.  

“No!”

“You love me...you think I’m super sexy hot and you wanna mack on me.”

“I do not Jay!”  

“Just admit it, you love me.”

“You are so full of yourself.” You replied, reaching for the remote, “just let me turn on a movie.”  

“Fine,” JJ let you take the remote back, relaxing again as you started the movie, “but I know the truth.”  

You stuck your tongue out at him, trying to deflect from the situation. You didn’t want him to think that his teasing wasn’t just teasing and he was actually right.

This probably isn’t even a full list. It’s just stuff I either read or write fanfiction regularly for. But there are a ton of books that I adore just haven’t added any characters to the list.

ROBERT ALDA

February 26, 1914

Robert Alda was born Alfonso Giuseppe Giovanni Roberto D'Abruzzo in New York City to Italian-American immigrants. He began his performing career as a singer and dancer in vaudeville after winning a talent contest, and moved on to burlesque. His professional surname derives from the first two letters of each of his first name and his surname at birth: ALphonso D’Abruzzo.

In 1950 he won a Tony Award for his Broadway debut as Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls, although he was passed over for the film in favor of Marlon Brando. Over the next two decades he appeared in four more Broadway shows. 

Five years earlier he had made his screen debut playing George Gershwin in Rhapsody in Blue (1945).  The film also featured future Lucy cast members Jay Novello, Hans Moebus, Will Wright, Jack Chefe, Oliver Blake, Paul Cristo, and Bess Flowers.  It wouldn’t take more than twenty years, but Alda would also be added to this list. 

He made his TV acting debut on the 1949 anthology series “Your Show Time” episode “The Substitute”.  The program was repeated in 1951 on “Your Story Theatre”.  He also appeared as himself in “The Teen Club” in September 1949. 

In 1955 he hosted “The Robert Alda Show” although not much is known about the program. At the same time he played his first leading role on television in “Secret File USA” doing 8 out of the 22 episodes of the series. 

His first appearance with Lucille Ball (and with Desilu) came on January 13, 1964 in “Lucy Goes To Art Class” (TLS S2;E15).  Alda played Danfield’s most eligible bachelor - and both Lucy and Viv set their sights on him at the same time when he signs up for an art class.   

Six years later, Alda played himself as the emcee of the Secretary Beautiful Pageant when “Lucy Competes with Carol Burnett” (HL S2;E24) in March 1970. The role was originally written for Don Ameche, then re-cast with Ross Martin, before Alda was finally contacted for the part.  He got to use his musical theatre skills singing the pageant’s theme.  Coincidentally, his first wife Joan Browne (mother of actor Alan Alda), was a beauty contest winner. They  divorced in 1946 after 14 years of marriage. 

It wasn’t long before Alda was back, doing what was familiar, playing musical comedy in a revival of Harry’s 1928 college show. Alda played the Dean of Bullwinkle U in “Lucy, the Co-Ed” (HL S3;E6) in October 1970. 

Oddly, Robert Alda has a principal role in the musical-within-the-show but has no corresponding 'real life’ character as the others do. Perhaps the character was cut from the opening scenes for time?  It is possible that Alda was playing himself again.

His final series appearance came a year later in the two-parter “Lucy Goes Hawaiian” (HL S3;E23 & E24) first aired February 15 & 22, 1971.  In both parts he played Captain MacClay, of the Hawaii-bound cruise ship USS Lurline.  

Again, Lucy and Viv compete for the handsome Alda’s attentions - until they find out that there is a Mrs. MacClay and she’s on the ship, too!  The surname MacClay is a tribute to Lucille Ball’s long-time publicist Howard McClay, who also loaned his name to characters on “The Lucy Show.”  The end credits, however, spell 'McClay’ as 'MacClay.’  Although Part Two ends with a musical revue, Tony-winning singer Alda is relegated to introductions and does not get a solo feature. 

Alda’s final collaboration with Lucille Ball was in 1980′s “Lucy Moves To NBC” special. Alda plays Mickey Ludin, Lucille Ball’s attorney, advising her about signing a contract with the peacock network. He shared his scene with Ruta Lee and Gary Imhoff as Fred Silverman. Coincidentally, Lucy gets a telephone call from Howard McClay, who was the real-life Executive Producer and was also the name of Alda’s character in “Lucy Goes Hawaiian”. 

Alda continued acting, notably making two appearances (1975 and 1980) on “M*A*S*H”, the series that starred his real-life sons Alan. In one episode his other son Anthony made it a family affair. Anthony’s mother was Alda’s second wife, Italian actress Flora Marino. 

His final screen appearance was on an episode of the Bea Arthur sitcom “Amanda’s Place” (a “Fawlty Towers” inspired failure) in 1983. Alda died on May 3, 1986, aged 72, after a long illness following a stroke.
