Curtis looks over your shoulder and huffed in disbelief and laughter at the flier you were looking at.
The drama club was trying to raise money for that years upcoming production. It was all an innocent fun way to raise money. You already had the freezer full of pints of Ben and Jerry's, that cost you and arm and a leg but you were happy to do so, checked the movies that they were all PG and yet...
"Honey..."
"I know."
"Do they though?" Curtis laughed now, really unable to stifle it anymore as you gave a groan and let the flier fall to the table.
"I mean... I hope not! How am I supposed to tell them we can't distribute this flier cause it's got suggestive slang on it. Can you imagine the phone calls I would be getting from the parents."
"If my kid came home with this, I would be laughing so fucking hard." Curtis easily tugged you to your feet, claiming your seat and tugging you onto a muscled thigh, his amusement still apparant with the grin he had. "I don't have the answer for you Pretty Girl." His arms caged you in close to his chest, letting him tilt his face into your neck and flush kisses behind your ear. "But we should really keep this one and hang it in the bedroom."
"It is funny." You admitted, picking it back up to look at it again. Feeling the laughter at the situation finally bubble up now instead of dread. You tilted your head a bit, letting yourself sink into the sensation of a beard burn and playful touches.
"Of course this is officially artwork now. We are a BJ in your PJ household."

Challenge Accepted
Tumblr media
A night out and a game of truth or dare ends well
Drinking games gone right
Warnings: cursing, mention of sexual themes
No no no. You were not getting roped into this. You moved to stand but Karen stopped you with a look. Why the hell had you come out tonight? Why the hell had Billy found it a good idea to bring a date to Josie's and why the hell had Jessica found it a good idea to suggest your booth play truth or dare in a public bar with a complete stranger sitting between Curtis and Billy, the place usually reserved for you.
At least there were a few additions to your group besides Billy's date Lyla. Jessica, Trish and her cousin Ben joined you all so it was about twelve of you crowded I into the two booths. You cut your eyes at Karen who smiled "It'll be fun and nothing too wild" you scoffed "Jessica suggested it. How is it not gonna be wild?" Trish laughed "I'll keep her on the timid side. I promise"
Billy met your eyes despite the brunette who seemed to be surgically attached to his side "Scared Y/N?" You felt a flicker of anger at the challenge in his words "Of course not. I'm in" you hated how those dark brown eyes made your stomach flip or how you knew what it felt like when he hugged you. You hated how much you missed the smell of his cologne when normally you'd leave Josies smelling like it because he'd dance with you or just follow you to the bar standing close while you ordered. You hated being so damn close to him but having to keep him at arms reach at the same time to protect your heart.
"Ok, should we draw straws or rock, paper, scissors?" Trish asked so Frank shrugged "Let Matt pick. He already said he don't want to play" Matt shrugged and picked one of you at random. Lyla sighed loudly before pulling out her phone to start texting. So much for wanting to be involved with Billy's friends as she said was her intentions for the night.
Tumblr media
You laughed as Ben and Foggy finished their dance and retook their seats. So far everyone had drank enough to be willing to do the tasks at hand. You were waiting for it to land on you, muttering under your breath each time "Please not me yet" and knew Matt heard.
It was down to you or Billy because Lyla had announced loudly "She wasn't playing any childish games" so Matt picked you. Trish leaned her head in with Karen and Jessica before saying "Truth or dare Y/N" you took a sip of your drink then shrugged "Dare?"
Jessica grinned "I dare ya to kiss the person here that you've known the longest" you stood then walked around to where Frank sat and placed a kiss to his cheek. Jessica groaned "I forgot he was who you've known longest!" Everyone cracked up laughing when you shrugged "That was probably the lamest challenge yet" she nodded "I got your ass the next round"
---------
Her eyes sat on Billy but before she could ask Lyla tugged his arm "I wanna leave. This is boring" you couldn't bit your tongue any longer. You didn't give a damn if she was with Billy, hell you'd seen him parade plenty of women around enough it didn't bother you any more.
The point was she had complained four times about Josies not being "high end" enough and now she was calling your friends boring? "You're a bitch and the only thing stopping me from slapping some manners into you is the fact that Curtis and Matt would probably stop me"
You looked at Billy "Get your date before I do" "Excuse me!" She gasped and you made a move towards her but Jessica grabbed your arm "Not worth it!" Billy stood to let her out the booth and said something to Frank before following her outside.
You looked back at Jessica who had effectively pulled you into her lap "Who's next?"
Tumblr media
Billy watched Lylas taillights disappear. She'd actually had the audacity to tell him to pick between you and her. He'd nearly laughed in her face. No one would get picked before you. You were his best friend next to Frank. You and him spent most of your free time.
He couldn't imagine his life without you in it and the only reason he dated women like Lyla was because he didn't want to fuck up your friendship by pursing you romantically.
He had feelings for you and fuck knowing what it felt to wake up with you in his arms messed with his head at times but he wouldn't risk one of the most important relationships he had. No, he'd just keep going the way he had and hope he could bury the feelings deep enough.
----------
Billy walked back into the bar and by the time he got almost back to the booth your laughter hit his ears. The sight he was met with didn't quite set well with him. From the looks of it Ben was giving you a lap dance?
You were laughing and so was Ben so it wasn't like it was serious, more light hearted like everything other task but seeing Ben that close to you? Seeing you touch Ben? He could feel his jaw tense even as he reclaimed his seat and yours and Ben's little show was over.
---------
You took your seat back but Billy met your eyes and glanced next to him "Your usual seat is open" you shrugged "This one works" he nodded seeing the anger in your eyes. He'd hit a nerve bringing Lyla, didn't he?
Was that why you were showing Ben interest? If you were jealous did that mean you wanted him too? He held your eyes for a moment before saying "Jess I missed my turn"
----------
Jessica laughed "Ok Russo. Truth or dare" "Dare" he answered with a smirk. Jessica motioned to Trish and Karen. You watched the three curiously before Trish said "Dare you to kiss someone in this bar within the next five minutes" he nodded "My choice?" Karen shrugged "As long as they're willing"
----------
Great, you thought to yourself. Now you had to watch Billy kiss some random person. He stood up and smoothed his jacket before saying "Set the timer"
He stopped next to Ben "Can you move for one second man?:" Ben looked a bit confused but slid out the booth nonetheless. Billy reached for your leg and you felt your heart flip. Despite the urge to snatch away you let him pull you to the edge of the booth.
You looked up at him, feeling everyone watching but it may as well only been you and him. "Y/N, can I kiss you?" You shrugged "If you want to" you didn't want to seem too eager but you were barely hiding your nerves. He gripped the side of your face and before you knew it his lips were on yours. You felt his tongue flicking against your lips so you gave him access, almost moaning at the feeling of him deepening the kiss. His tongue exploring your mouth and swallowing the sigh that escaped you.
When he pulled away you both stared at each other for a heartbeat before you said "Um we need to talk" no one out of your group said a word but you could hear them whispering the moment they thought you and him were out of earshot.
Tumblr media
You walked into the cool night air and spun around to face Billy "What the hell was that?" He shrugged "Not like you didn't kiss me back darling" you felt your cheeks warm "Not the point!"
He walked closer to you and it took everything you had to not take a step back "Wanna know what I think?" You waved a hand "Might as well"
He reached for your hip and you let him pull you closer, putting a hand up against his chest to keep some distance despite being in his arms. You looked up at him and he smiled, slipping his other hand at the base of your neck effectively holding you in place.
You swallowed hard past the fire that shot straight to your core at the action "I think you have hated everyone one I've been with, same as I have hated every man you've been. I think no one on this earth knows us the way we know each other. I think that we've both been holding back on how we feel and I think if I got just one chance to have you in my bed I'd never let you leave. Am I right or just reading everything wrong here?"
You shook your head "I want you Billy" he tilted his head slightly "For a night or for good? I mean I'm not going to tell you no either way" "I want you for good" you whispered, closing your eyes. "Thank god" he muttered and your eyes flew open to see that damn smile on his lips "What?"
He grinned "I was hoping you'd say that. Now can we go to my place?" You shrugged "Depends?" "On what?" He asked "Are you sure you want me?" He chuckled darkly, letting his eyes roam across your body "Give me tonight and if you're not sure how much I want you come morning I will give you my damn wraith" "Challenge accepted Russo" you breathed before pulling him down into another kiss.

JOHN SILVER WISHLIST
Tumblr media
Here's a short wishlist of wanted interactions for Silver.
Jim - Give this man his son. I personally HC that John had a late wife who passed unexpectedly-- his son would've been Jim's age, give or take a few years.
Treasure Planet Characters - Dopplers, BEN, his crew-- honestly anyone. I'm also eager for characters with TP verses!
Rise of the Guardians/GOC Characters - If you think about Treasure Planet as a relic of the Golden Age-- you kinda see where I'm going with this. Let Silver meet the Guardians, maybe Pitch, hell even a MiM [though he might go full dad on Mimmy].
King Triton - So Jim/Ariel is a popular crossover ship. I raise you Silver/Triton. A pirate and a merman? Also both of them are dads who kinda struggle connecting to their kids. Both are widowers-- I have such thoughts.
Green Lanterns - They're space cops. He's a space criminal. Imagine him && a GL getting stuck somewhere and forced to work together. Maybe the GL lets him go in the end since they saved each other's lives.
Gravity Falls - Ford traveled dimensions. Who says he didn't come to a world where spaceships ride through the Etherium? Maybe he and Silver met when they were both young and worked together for a while. Ford has a rap sheet-- and Silver is a bad influence. Absolutely open to buddies or shipping shit. Silver would give Mabel a sword.
Samurai Jack - A Scotsman. Blease. In my SJ AU-- Silver is part of a crew of pirates who help Jack along his journey. He and the Scotsman have had work done by the same mechanism and bonded in a way similar to Armstrong and Curtis.

SHAL YOU NO LIKE ROBBIE?!
TBH, I don't care as much about the writers. (I know--eternal shame. I'm not even a real fan--kill me now etc.) I just...don't remember things. I always have to remind myself who's doing what. I don't know how half of you keep it all straight AND remember episode titles??? And no, nooooo I like Robbie just fine. Love him, even. He’s in my top choices!!!!
I just consider him something of a specialist, maybe? I'm going off vibes, remember. I feel like Robbie is a long-winded, loveable teddy bear. His writing reminds me of comic books, which could be why it feels so fraught and verbose at times, like it's crammed into a speech bubble...? Idk.
I think a lot of his characters are also a bit...it's hard to put my finger on it, exactly. Wholesome? They're so Loveable (TM) and Dorky (TM). I find it stifling sometimes to stomach all the "pluckiness" at once. It even took me awhile to warm up to his characters in The Winchesters. (Don't hit me! Maybe I just have a bad personality.)
I think you'd want him on your team for sure. He did Goodbye Stranger and other wonderful things like Metatron's speech in Don't Call Me Shurley (which was also belabored at times but greatly helped by Curtis Armstrong)! It's a type of energy I find leaning "too meta," and "too mechanistic" at times. The best example I can think of is There's No Place Like Home. I like it in pieces, but as a whole, it seems a little too self-aware sometimes. But not in a fun Ghostfacers way? It's hard to describe.
I...can't imagine Robbie creating an Alastair or a Uriel, or even a Meg...but maybe I'm forgetting something.
////
Maybe it's Ben Edlund's intellectual(TM) vibe that makes his Sam and Cas more to my liking? Idk. I feel like, since Sam's the only one still alive, getting Sam right would be key to the whole thing hanging together in a sequel. Anyway, I feel like his work in Reading is Fundamental is legitimately Ecclesiastical because he can be more wry/philosophical/satirical. I'm biased--I like philosophy!
He can do entire standalone narrations which are just as “long” but it doesn’t feel so…templated, somehow? It usually just hits better for me, personally. Sometimes he lurches into being too poetic for my liking, too, especially in season 8. But overall, I dig. Meredith can infuse his stuff with some much-needed warmth. It all makes sense in my head!
I think he's at his best when he's being sarcastic and when the action is so fast-paced he doesn't have much time to get stuck doing word-acrobatics. His good guys are conflicted, and his bad guys are really oily. He lets the characters be mean and surly. He can be as deeply fucked up as Sera Gamble when he wants to be (Repo Man????)
////
I can find something I like in most of the writers, even Bucklemming. They have some great devil's advocate lines and political stuff in their scripts, once you comb past the racism, fetishism, and weird pacing.
////
I'm not above keeping Sera Gamble in a cage and letting her out to contribute random, unhinged things. Something is deeply, deeply wrong with her, and that translates well to a good dose of fucky-uppy-ness and incredible pain, which I think Robbie can tend to sleep on a little bit. (Dream a Little Dream of Me, Houses of the Holy?? SO GOOD.)
////
Others? Bobo does some great stuff, but sometimes I find his back-and-forth dialogue to be a little off? I even think something felt off with Cas's speech in Despair as much as I applaud the effort. Steve Yockey does an excellent Rowena.
Also, I'd let Amanda Tapping direct everything. Just because.
////
Mostly, I think they should just hire @angelsdean 🤷  and @jewishtrentcrimm -- I followed them during their live tweeting reactions of The Winchesters and mostly longed for their ideas over what was happening on screen.
////
Most importantly, it’d need a shortform writer in the wings whose job it is to take all the long-winded ppl's excellent monstrosities and chop it to bits and couch it in the right voice with the right amount of prickly subterfuge and defensiveness. A vicious, short-form editor who values brevity and would kill me inside...
Also, we’d need an official meta wrangler, because the meta can start to eat itself and really devolve if you're not careful (I think this is Robbie's Achilles' Heel in some of his stuff; it walks the line reeeeeally close for me in "There's No Place Like Home," for example, but I've come around to "Fan Fiction.")
Tumblr media
////
I am...quite happy to be corrected. Knowing who does what well is NOT my specialty.

Richard Curtis, you say Crowley?
Hmm. I can just imagine Crowley sliding up to certain writer one day in the pub and suggesting a series about a certain sassy, sarcastic noble who has a black snake as his heraldic animal who is always having to come up with a "cunning plan." Coincidence...?

“There’s not a word yet for old friends who’ve just met.” - Jim Henson
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hazel smiled as she sat next to Billy's bed, it had only been a week since she had started reading to him but it had become a welcome moment of peace. She took his hand in hers and placed the next book on the bed, it was Death on the Nile this time, "it looks like we're opening up next week."
Billy was elated, he wanted to cheer but he couldn't. He knew his friends would love Hazel. He could see the meeting in his head, Frank would wrap her in one of his bone crushing bear hugs, Curtis would extend his hand with a smile and Karen would insist on drinks at the bar with Matt and Foggy.
Each time Hazel's voice had floated into his mind and her warm hand linked in his, he had focused all his energy on just one squeeze but so far, it had been fruitless. His frustration grew as he always managed to do it when she wasn't there. Sometimes it was a moment after she left, sometimes it took all day for him to manage a twitch but he was going to do it.
He knew the other voice too, Lizabeth's, and he wondered if she looked as fed up as she always sounded, "you should tell me about your day, he's probably getting sick of your murder mysteries by now."
Hazel huffed, "I don't think he wants to hear that."
"Of course I do." That was all he wanted to say but he couldn't even manage a sound. He wanted far more than what Hazel had said about herself in passing.
Lizzy sighed, "just give him the spark notes, then you can start the book."
Billy heard Lizabeth leave the room and he waited for Hazel's soft voice to fill his ears, "she won't let up until I do," Billy believed it, "well, it started bad because I spilt my coffee and it was the last of what I had at home so I had to brave the subway uncaffeinated. I thought I was going to commit homicide because the person next to me was chewing too loud."
He wanted to laugh, to tell her stories about being stuck in holes with men who behaved like pigs.
"Then I got a call about Barry's fancy food, it's on time so he'll get his clams before he grows legs and lungs and eats me in the middle of the night." Barry was Hazel's pufferfish, although Billy thought she was talking about a dog the first time she spoke of him.
He could say so many things, he wondered if she would be shy or smile and toss him something back.
"And I'm pretty sure a doctor just asked me on a date, I said yes." Billy could hear his huff, a woman that beautiful should know when she's being asked out.
"But he's kinda of ass so I'm just going to be nice and call it an early night. I'm far too busy to date right now, he'll you're the only man who listens to me and you're pretty much in a coma."
Billy could feel a charge in his chest, had he been awake, this would have been easy.
"Now that's enough about me, let's crack open a fresh book and settle in."
****
Billy knew it was coming, that dreaded chime, but he was planning on it. Days of matching each word with the passing seconds until he could count down until the bell rang, "well Billy, I'll be back tomorrow."
For the last twenty minutes, he put all his attention into just closing his hand. He thought it was another failed attempt as he felt Hazel's hand leave him but his hand ached and his fingers shifted and she paused.
Billy waited for her dismissal but it never came, "can you do that again?" He had a feeling that was coming and put every ounce of willpower into fulfilling her request. He must have done it because he felt her jump.
"Ok, alright. I going to get Lizzy in here, umm" Hazel's hand slipped for his briefly and he heard the call bell, "in a bit, Lizzy's going to swap with me. If you're doing this intentionally you need to squeeze her hand too, that's all I want you to focus on."
He steeled himself, just a little longer and he could rest. He heard footsteps, "what is it?" Lizabeth sounded worried.
"He squeezed my hand and I got him to do it again, I'm pretty sure this isn't just a reflect." Hazel sounded so hopeful, he wasn't going to disappoint her.
He could almost feel Lizzy waving her hand, "give him ere, Russo, I know we're not on as good of terms but can you let me know you're not bullshitting?"
Billy liked this woman, her hand was different from Hazel's, still warm and soft but different. He focused on Lizabeth's hand in his, going over his fingers as he willed them to move, "holy shit you're right."
Lizzy's hand was gone and Hazel's was back, "I'm going to go get the Neruo, you stay right there."
He was so proud of himself, it had taken every bit of his strength but he got to hear joy in Hazel's voice. "You won't need to do any more today, they'll let you have some time to get your strength back but they'll want to do some tests. I'll stay until the docs get here and when I get back tomorrow, we'll pick up where we left off. You did really good Billy. Your friends are going to be so proud of you."
The next few hours were a blur of tests and doctors. Hazel was right, they didn't ask him to do anything else but they talked him through everything. Just when he thought he couldn't take any more, it stopped and he was finally left in the peace he needed to prepare for the next day.
****
Hazel came in the next day with excitement in her voice, her hand sliding into his with a familiar warmth, "today's going to be a lot of work but I know you can do it. The docs are going be in here with us are they're going ask you some yes, no questions. All you have to do is show me what those answers feel like and we'll go from there."
He gave her a quick squeeze, "ok, you've got this, don't worry. And if you don't feel like it today, we can try again tomorrow."
There were footsteps, ones he had learned well in all his time at the hospital, "Hello Mr Russo, I'm doctor Waston, I think you've heard my voice before. Can you show Hazel what a yes is?"
He focused on holding on for a second longer than he had been, "yes?" He did it again, "ok Dr, long squezze for yes."
Now that his brain had a mission, it felt like his thoughts were racing and he tried to visualise things he wanted.
"Can you show Miss Moreau a no?" Billy
Billy's brain was working overtime now that he had her last name, he could focus on learning more about her. All he needed to do was get it to Frank. He clenched his hand and let go as fast as he could manage, "ok, short for no, can you do it again to let me know?" Billy was anxious to get this moving.
Hazel's voice grew clearer by the second, "yep, short squeeze for no." There was a pause and Billy thought he could hear something being passed to Hazel, "do you remember where we first met?"
He imagined clasping her hand in his as they walked down the street, hoping the vision would keep his fingers tensed, "yes. Was it on boat?" He released his hand and gave her a short squeeze.
"Was it on a train platform?" He was sitting across for her at the table inside the chocolate shop she had told him about. Hazel inhaled, "yes, good work Billy. You don't have long left now and then we'll let you rest. I'm going you ask some questions about your time here and I need to tell me if you remember, can you do that?" When the doctor realised that Billy was ready to communicate, they called his friends for questions they could ask him about conversations they had throughout Billy's stay.
He was still sitting in the chocolate shop. Hazel had a foam moustache and a fleck of chocolate on her plump lower lip, "do you remember when Frank told you about the new iPhone?"
Of course he did, Frank wouldn't shut up about how stupid it was, "that's good. Do you remember when you moved here? Frank and Curt were with you, they told you all about the room." He thought for a moment, white walls, lots of flowers, the nurses were dressed in light blue scrubs.
Billy searched his brain for something else, he was dancing with her at a fundraiser, she had carnations in her hair and her fingers were laced in his, "Great, that's really good Billy."
There was quiet for a moment, "I'm not asking him that, I think we should take a break." Hazel sounded angry, he didn't like it.
"Of course, I told you we'd take you lead on this."
But Billy didn't want to stop, he wanted to prove he could handle anything. He clenched his hand and then let go, hoping Hazel would pick up on what he was saying, there was a pause before she spoke, "ok Billy, I understand. Do you remember what happened the night you were hurt?"
As Billy tried to find the memories, he felt his heart race and then suddenly he couldn't feel Hazel's hand, all he could feel was agony, searing pain and breaking bones and the sound of Frank screaming his name over an unbearable ringing. Things faded fast, the darkness of pain dissolving to just darkness, he was grateful that the last thing he felt was Hazel's hand on his cheek.
****
Billy didn't sleep at all that night, the moment his awareness returned, it was like he couldn't stop his heart racing. All he wanted to do was open his eyes, to ground himself in the real world rather than the one that was pounding on the inside of his skull.
Waiting for Hazel's late afternoon visit was torture, he had spent his spare moments learning the sounds of everyone's footsteps, and Hazel's was by far his favourite.
Her hello made his heart skip, she had good news, "Hello Billy, I have good news and better news. The good news is that they're going to move you into one of the rebab rooms so you'll have more people to talk to, the better news is that the hospital will be open for visitors on Sunday."
He clenched his hand, hoping that the long press gave away that he was happy, "alright, now that we can talk, I can ask you if you want me to keep going with our murder mystery train, so you wanna pick up where we left off with Agatha?"
No, Billy didn't want that, he wanted to hear about her, he wanted to know how her date with the doctor went. He closed his hand then let go, "alright then, I'm hearing you loud and clear. We can figure this out, do you want to watch some TV? Your plan has all the channels."
Billy gave her another short squeeze, the frustration made him want to punch something. He racked his brain for an idea, combing through his thoughts until something popped up. He focused all his energy on lifting his thumb before tapping her skin quickly twice and once for longer, dot dot dash. He did it again, Hazel was an intelligent woman, she would understand that he was trying to do something even if she didn't understand what he was saying.
"Billy, are you using morse code?" He closed his hand hard, "ok, ok. U?" He could almost see her thinking, "oh, you want to hear about me?"
There was surprise in her voice, Billy couldn't decide if he liked that sound because, of course, he wanted to hear about her, "ok. Well I gave Barry his clams and he made a huge mess of his tank so I'm trying to teach him how to clean up, it's not going well. I tried a new coffee too, it's called rainbow bark roast, it's alright but I think I'm going to sign up for one the those subscription services where they send you different beans every month."
Billy wanted to tell her about the coffee he had at Anvil, about how his first frivolous purchase was an expensive coffee machine that looked like something off a steampunk spaceship. He was surprised at all the small things he wanted to share with Hazel, the little parts of his life he never thought mattered to anyone but he knew that would have mattered to her.
"Oh and I went on that date, not date, I told you about." He was happy at the disappointment in her tone, "it went exactly how I expected it to go, he talked about himself nonstop and then complained about the wine being too floral. I mean we all know wine tasting is bullshit, it's just fermented grape juice, I'd rather drink whiskey."
She liked whiskey, Billy thought to himself. There was a bar a few blocks away from Anvil that she'd love if he could only tell her about it. "You look like a guy Gin guy, I've never been able to get into it, it kinda smells like the ER on a busy friday."
He squeezed her hand then let go and she laughed, that was a sound he did like, "no? Then what do you like?"
He struck a blank, he knew what W was, he just couldn't remember it, "just take your time, all I need is a few letters." All the happy feelings vanished, he couldn't remember something as fucking simple as a letter. It didn't matter, Hazel was there with a solution.
"We can figure it out together. B for bourbon is one dash then three dots," he knew that, "S for scotch is three dots," he knew that too, "and W is.."
It came to him in a flash and he tapped it out as fast as he could, "there you go. Does that mean you're a whiskey man?"
He imagined sitting next to her on the couch, her hand in his while he enjoyed a quiet night with a glass in his hand, "ahh, a man after my own heart. You're pretty smart, you know, it would have never occurred to me to ask you to try Morse code. I have an idea, how about we got through the whole alphabet together? That was when you're friends can visit, you don't have to think so hard. Does that sound good to you?"
He hoped the force of his squeeze let her know all on its own, "great, let's start at the beginning."
****
It was slow going, but being able to tap words out opened up a whole new world. Hazel was fantastic at putting small things together. She learned Billy liked watching MMA, and the next day, she had the rundowns of all the fights that had been on since the lockdown. He was getting stronger, too, and he was slowly getting better at expressing his feelings through how hard he would squeeze her hand.
Billy's favourite times were when he got to talk about his friends, Anvil and all the places he had been. The information he could give was basic, as much as he wanted to pour his heart out, it was hard when it sometimes took him twenty minutes to tap out a seven letter word. That didn't matter to Hazel, she was always patient with him, he never felt like he couldn't answer her but she always gave him just enough of a challenge and helped him rise to it.
Sunday came in what felt like hours but Hazel never entered his room. He held on for visit her all day and the joy of hearing his friends did little to overcome her absence. Nevertheless, Frank's hand in his dulled the ache.
"Hey Bill, it's good to see you again, although from what your nurses said, you had plenty of company while we were away."
Billy wanted to tell Frank all about Hazel and once again, the frustration at his limitations was back. If he couldn't tell Frank, he would have to show him. He tapped out her name as fast as he could and Frank's laugh filled his ears, "oh, so you haven't seen me in two months and the first thing you want me to do is get your new best friend, that's cold Bill."
There was no malice in Frank's voice and the chime of the call bell filled him with hope. Lizzy's footsteps followed and Billy's heart fluttered, "yes Mr Castle, what can I get for you?"
Frank chuckled, "can you go get Hazel? Billy's asking for her."
Lizzy smiled, "I can, she'll be taking her break soon."
Billy heard her leave the room, and Frank's voice filled the space, "we were really glad to hear you had someone with you. Karen was trying to get in here without getting us into shit, but all she could come up with was a story on the hospital's cafe."
Hazel had told him about it, he knew that story wouldn't be a good one.
Frank's tone changed just as he finished telling Billy all about how Anvil was going and Frank's hand shifted from his as he stood up. "You must be Hazel?"
Billy's body filled with anticipation, "I am. It's so good to finally meet you. Billy speaks very highly of you."
Frank chuckled, "oh, I'm sure he does. I can I ask where you were today? Lizzy told me you're normal here in the afternoons."
Billy wanted to hit him, Frank was going to scare her off, "oh, I didn't want to intrude, I'm sure you two have so much to talk about."
Billy could hear a chair moving then Hazel's hand appeared in his free one, it was a strange sensation, she always sat on his left side.
"So Hazel, tell me about yourself." Billy understood where Frank was coming from but it didn't stop him from wanting to kick the shit out of him.
Hazel felt like Frank was trying to look into her soul, "there's not much to tell, I work in the peds ward which is just through the door and across the sky bridge, I live in Hell's kitchen and I have a fish named Barry."
"Why not work at Mercy if you live in Hell's Kitchen?" Billy was growing worried that Hazel would feel like Frank was judging her.
"I work with kids, Mercy's peds ward is pretty basic, plus I have some qualifications that fit better here."
Billy could tell Hazel didn't like where this was going, there was something in her tone that worried him, "I don't mean to be rude because you've done a lot for Bill but why did you want to help him?"
Hazel's hand left him and Billy felt powerless to do anything, "I met Billy on my first day in the city. Without his help, I would have spent the whole day lost. I never got the chance to thank him."
"So you did all this just for a few minutes of his time two years ago." Frank realised his slipup far too late
Billy felt the change in the air, "wait, how did you know it was two years ago?" Billy's thoughts were racing, the last thing he needed was for Hazel to be scared of him, where the fuck was Curt? He would have handled this so much better. "it was nice meeting you, Mr Castle but I think I better head back to work. I'm sure I can see Billy some time tomorrow."
Billy could tell she was scared and doing her best to hide it, he hoped to God Frank understood his as he clenched his hand and let go. Frank's chuckle filled the air, "that right Bill?" He did it again, "stay please. I'm sorry, you gotta see where I'm coming from?"
The tension faded from Billy's body and her warmth returned to his hand, "of course. It doesn't take a genius to know that Billy has a lot of money and you don't want someone you don't know taking advantage of your friend. I'm telling the truth when I say that all I want is to repay his kindness."
She sounded sad, Billy hated it, "that's all I wanted to hear. I probably wasn't the best person to do this, Curt's much better at the people thing than I am."
Hazel laughed, "yeah, I thought I was about to get yelled at. No offence."
Billy could feel the tension leave the room as they both relaxed, "none taken. Bill wants you to stay and so I do, plus you still gotta meet everyone else."
Hazel let out a nervous giggle, "Billy have me the rundown on everyone, Karen's your partner and Curt's your friend. There's also Matt and Foggy, and David and his family am I right?"
Frank nodded, "yeah, that's about it. We'll have to get you over to Avnil too, some of the guys want to thank you for all you've done."
Billy squeezed Frank's hand, hoping it was hard enough to hurt him just a little and Frank huffed, "you can't keep her all to yourself Bill."
If Billy could punch him, he would. "When do you need to do back to your shift?"
Hazel's absence didn't seem so bad now that he knew she was going to keep coming back, "twenty minutes but I'll be back at around six for my two hours with him."
"That's great, Curt and Karen will be here when they get off work. They can't wait to meet you."
Billy was suddenly unbelievably tired, the anxiety and fear fading to exhaustion, "the feeling is mutual."
When Billy came to again, he could hear more voices, all filled with affection.
"How did you manage to work out talking to him in Morse code?" Of course, Karen would ask that.
"It was all Billy, I was just there to catch it." Billy wanted to chastise her, she was the one who gave him the time of day and her faith, he wouldn't have been able to do it all by himself.
"We'll have to have you over for dinner, Sarah's been insisting that we should at least bring you lunch the moment the hospital reopen." He hoped Curt would be more subtle but he knew how it would go with the others, Frank would grunt out a request and Karen would give a demand that sounded like an invitation.
"Thank you for the offer but I couldn't possibly intrude. Maybe when Billy is up and moving around, we can revisit it." Hazel sounded a little taken aback.
"Of course, but I'm sure Billy's going to be more insistent than us." Billy was glad Curt didn't push it, he was smart enough to know that things couldn't get too personal or the ethics board was going to start pocking around, he had a plan for that but now wasn't the time.
Billy wasn't upset when the chime came, "Sadly, I have to head home but I'll be back tomorrow."
Hazel's hand left his, "you can't stay?"
Billy wanted to laugh, he knew Frank would warm to her quickly, "no, I can't stay on hospital grounds any longer," she paused, "I can rearrange my day tomorrow so we can talk more if you like?"
"Sounds good, we'll see you tomorrow."
Billy didn't know how to put his feelings into words, but he had a new mission, open his eyes and say hello.

George Question: Favourite composer for each period of western classical music? (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th century, and a special mention from any time)
Finally getting round to this
Baroque: J.S. Bach. I know it's kind of the default option but there's a reason for that, also I can just imagine him being an incredible guy to be around. Like maybe he wouldn't necessarily be the nicest guy ever but he would fill the room with his presence
Also I think if you gave him synths he would actually get like. Musical zoomies he'd pop off
Classical: Honestly not a massive fan of classical, don't know too many guys, but Haydn has some nice stuff I suppose.
Romantic: Ooh there's so many to choose from... You can never go too far wrong with Tchaikovsky but I think my favourite would be Mussorgsky. His stuff's damn hard to play but when you pull it off it's actually goated. (This is also one of the advantages of being a violist. Best seat in the whole place to listen in, and you have enough rests that you actually can, semi frequently.) Sibelius is cool too, I really wanna play Karelia suite at some point, it's one of my favourite pieces just in general.
20th Century: Gustav Holst. Hands down. Actually the best guy. He's like Vivaldi in that everyone knows him for one suite but his other stuff is actually so good too! Everyone knows the planets but the St. Paul's suite is great as well!!
Special Mentions: Couldn't decide so here's a guy and a collection of guys
Contemporary: I really like Curtis Schweitzer's stuff. I made a couple posts on his work this morning because I was listening to him and digging the asymmetrical metric vibes
Early Music: The court of King Alfonso X of Portugal put out some bangers like the Cantigas de Santa Maria, I just really like them. En Todo Tempo Faz Ben is just a jaunty lil song and I will NOT shut up about it

With ITV drama 'Karen Pirie' coming to an end. We got to chat to Lauren Lyle about her time on the show, preparing herself for the role and behind-the-scenes stories.

Hi Lauren! Thanks for chatting with ReVamp Magazine. Has 2022 been good for you?
It has, i’ve been very lucky to travel a lot for work from LA to the very most Northern Island of of the UK so i’ve seen some amazing sights. A grey whale in California and a colony of grey seals in the North. It’s been such a good summer in London too. After working away loads it felt cool to reconnect with my friends and actually live in my newly renovated apartment.
Do you remember the first production you worked on?
My first ever proper acting job was The Crucible at The Old Vic on The West End. I couldn’t believe it. TV wise it was either a BBC comedy called Radges which was hilarious and written by now a very successful comedian Fern Brady. Or it was Holby City! An absolute right of passage for a UK actor, i’m honoured to have got an episode before it ended.

You’re the lead role in the ITV crime drama ‘Karen Pirie’. How has the reaction been so far?
It been crazy. I’m quite overwhelmed, and even Twitter which can be a horrible place is largely very positive. I’m so happy everyone is loving it and despite not wanting to read reviews it is good to know even rival papers are agreeing that is a great show. I knew we were making a good thing and its such a relief now its finally out.
How did you prepare yourself for this role?
I read the scripts a million times, watched all the detective shows I could, and created my own big wall which outlined the case and all the suspects. It was very intense wrapping my head around the case and every little details but a real pleasure diving in and immersing myself. Then when it came to line learning it was just repetition repetition repetition. And then sometimes the pub alone, with a half pint and my script.

What was it like to be part of Val McDermid’s world?
Very cool! She’s created such iconic characters and much loved worlds. I was slightly daunted a the prospect of playing a character so many already loved from the books knowing I might not be everyone’s Karen they imagined in their head, however having done it once with Marsali as a book character from Outlander I knew this was our version and people would hopefully honour that. Which they have.
Do you think we need to see more female representation in big roles such as Karen's?
Always. I think telling this story through the lens of another young woman who also knows what it means to be nervous walking home at night is relevant and important. The case is very personal to Karen and the subject matter is to me, so i definitely feel proud to be opening up that conversation further into the mainstream. I’ve had lots of amazing messages from women saying that seeing a vanity free, funny, relatable woman on screen is so refreshing and reassuring.

Have you got any funny behind-the-scenes stories?
I got my parents into the final scene of the whole show as extras. It was quite special to bring them to work and show what I do. We did one take where we picked up half way through the scene and on one told my mum so she started acting out the very beginning of the scene. She stalled the whole take and accidentally got in Chris Jenks (The Mint’s) shot. Luckily the director through it was hilarious and filmed the whole thing.
Lastly, have you got any plans for the rest of the year?
I have just finished another film and i’m preparing to go away to an Island to shoot another one which will take me up to Christmas. Then it will be Christmas dinners and sleep.
You can catch the last episode of 'Karen Pirie' on ITV tonight at 8pm or watch the whole season on ITV Hub.

Haunted Mansion.... a surprisingly decent film
I kind of went to see Haunted Mansion on a whim. I never really was making plans to go see this during the summer, but just a combination of other plans falling out and me wanting to get out of the house, I decided to take the plunge with Haunted Mansion. Turns out, its a pretty decent movie. I was quite surprised. I love POTC and I didn't mind Jungle Cruise, but theme park rides aren't exactly the most imaginative sources to base movies off. But Haunted Mansion is a pretty fun romp. I have been to Disneyland several times as a kid, but I can't remember if I went on the Haunted Mansion ride. Its possible I was too scared as a kid, but the movie does a pretty good job of delivering on its basic premise and delivering a host of very likable actors playing likable characters. It manages to be a gateway horror/comedy movie for families, a nice mystery film, and a surprisingly moving exploration of grief. Each of these elements work well individually as well as in conjunction with the others. As an adult, there is nothing particularly scary about the ghosts, but I can imagine kids getting scared in a good way. The scares are all done in amusing ways, often leading to some good laughs. The mystery of a group of characters bound together by circumstance, trying to figure out the identity of the main ghost and a way to neutralize it, is fairly compelling.
But the exploration of grief is the film's beating heart. Grief is often the central theme of horror films and it is not surprising that it is the same here, but the film manages to be fairly moving, and a lot of that credit goes to LaKeith Stanfield who delivers a performance that was well above what this movie required. He is the emotional center of the movie and he does a damn good job. Also, I think credit should also go to Chase W. Dillon, who plays Travis. He is arguably the second most important character when it comes to the exploration of grief in this film, and his bond with Stanfield's Ben is quite sweet. The cast in general brings their A game. Tiffany Haddish brings a lot of heart and humor to her role of Harriet, the psychic. Owen Wilson brings his trademark humor to the role of Father Kent. His arc feels like it got stuffed in late in the movie, but he makes it work. Danny DeVito is always a delight, bring a couple of the big laughs in the movie. Rosario Dawson is essentially the playing the straight man in this movie, and a potential future love interest for Ben and she is lovely in the role as always. Jamie Lee Curtis has an amusing cameo and Jared Leto is pretty fun as the Hatbox ghost. I am not sure how much of that performance was Leto and how much was CGI/voice effects, but he is credited for the role.
The film does start stretching its conceit a little by the end and it does start to get repetitive. The film doesn't blow the socks off in the way a POTC did, but the 2 hours I spent were entertaining. I am surprised that this film is releasing now and not during Halloween. This feels like a perfect family Halloween movie to watch. A 7/10.
