The draw for me about Benoit meeting Phillip on a case is that they can both be out and proud gay men while still having that angsty ‘mustn’t let him know how I feel’ energy, not because either of them are worried about being outed, but because neither wants to make the other uncomfortable by being inappropriate in a professional setting.

Benoit doesn’t hide that he’s gay, but he can’t let Phillip know he’s crushing on him because he’s a client and that’s inappropriate!

Continuing with the trend of speculating on Philip’s job, I think he’s an art historian who Benoit met on one of his early cases and because of this Benoit knows the entire time that Miles Bron’s “Mona Lisa” is a fake so he doesn’t feel at all bad about leaving Helen to burn it.

all I want for knives out 3 is for phillip to be in it in the role of romantic partner who against his will gets dragged into the investigation because it happened on a vacation he's on with benoit or sth and he now has to function as the utterly unwilling watson/hastings to benoit's holmes/poirot

and everytime they introduce themselves they have to correct people who assume "partner" means business partner to let them know he is his romantic partner and actually he would prefer to not be involved in the investigation

Hi there! This is for the reblog/ask a question post. I see that you mostly post Bond/Q fics, but I know you from a Knives Out fic. My question is: Were you drawn to the Benoit Blanc/Phillip ship because of similarities to Bond and Q? If so, what are they, and if not, what draws you to the Knives Out ship?

Of course, no pressure to respond, just thought I’d ask! I’m always interested to know what draws people into a ship.

I think in some ways I was drawn to Blanc/Phillip because Phillip is such a blank slate: we only see him for a few seconds in Glass Onion, and just get the barest amount of information about him in those few seconds: tie-dye shirt, British, baking (although even the baking could just be because everyone was making sourdough at that point in the pandemic). So to write for that ship, we have to work a little bit forensically and try to create a plausible Phillip based on what we know about Blanc. We know Blanc values a kind heart, for example; that he likes showtunes; that he doesn’t suffer fools. What might a partner who complements those values be like? There are many different possibilities, I think, but some things feel truer for me personally than others.

And relatedly, because there’s not much in canon about Phillip yet, there’s really a lot of free rein to do what you like! Is he a professor? A musician? A jewel thief? How did they meet? How long have they been together? There’s a lot of room to play with, there.

What draws you to this ship?

Listen I get that the whole point of the Knives Out franchise is to be a bunch of self contained movies where Benoit Blanc is not the main character and we never learn anything about his personal life but BUT maybe all those people who missed that Phillip was Benoit’s husband will be enough for Ryan Johnson to exasperatedly throw up his hands and give Hugh Grant another cameo where they kiss just so he can point to it and say ‘do you still think this guy’s his butler???!?’

THE FUNKY DETECTIVE (WHO IS A FAR BETTER CHARACTER THAN BBC SHERLOCK) IS CANONICALLY QUEER WITH A CANONICAL HUSBAND!!! their relationship is built out of fanfic material— we see phillip for like 20 seconds and have no idea what he does or how they met!!

I just want one of the next Knives Out movies to take place in like a prestigious boarding school or something, filled to the brim of entitled rich kids whose parents are bribing the teachers, bullying, and loads of corruption going on with the staff and such. And when like the headmaster or someone eventually gets murdered, the blame is put on the scholarship student whose family pools all of their savings together to hire Benoit because that would be very special to me please and thank mr. rian johnson
