DRACULA, A COMEDY OF TERRORS, performances begin Sept. 4th, on at the New World Stages in NYC.

Drew & Dane Productions presents Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen in a limited 18-week engagement, September 4 – January 7, at New World Stages (340 West 50th Street). Opening night is September 18. Bram Stoker’s horror classic gets a riotous makeover in this lightning-fast comedic reimagining that celebrates goth, camp, sexuality, and the magic of live theatre. This 90-minute, gender-bending, quick-change romp features a pansexual GenZ Count Dracula in the midst of an existential crisis. When he sets his sights on the brilliant young earth scientist Lucy Westfeldt, he meets his match for the first time – as well as a slew of other colorful characters including vampire hunter Jean Van Helsing, insect connoisseur Percy Renfield and behavioral psychiatrist Wallace Westfeldt, whose British country estate doubles as a free-range mental asylum. With a cast of brilliant quick take comedians, this Dracula will make you scream… with laughter.

“In re-reading Dracula, we were surprised and intrigued by the boldness with which Stoker, a closeted gay man in Victorian England, plays with sexuality and gender norms,” says director/co-writer Gordon Greenberg. Co-writer Steve Rosen adds “we wanted to celebrate him and, at the same time, send up his moody, broody melodrama in the spirit of some of our comedic heroes like Charles Ludlam, Monty Python and Mel Brooks.” In regards to the New World Stages production, Greenberg continues, “We are so fortunate to have assembled an extraordinary company of top-notch comedic actors whose fearlessness and hilarity make the whole experience feel like a party. We hope our Dracula gives audiences of all ages the chance to forget about their troubles and just laugh their heads off for a while.”

Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors features scenic design by Tijana Bjelajac, costume design by Tristan Raines, lighting design by Rob Denton, original music and sound design by Victoria Deiorio, and wig and hair design by Ashley Rae Callahan. General Management is by Live Wire Theatrical. The company understudies are Kaitlyn Boyer and Sean-Michael Wilkinson. Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors was commissioned and originally produced by Maltz Jupiter Theatre (Andrew Kato, Producing Artistic Director/Chief Executive) in 2019. In 2020, it was adapted as a radio play for The Broadway Podcast Network with an all-star cast including Annaleigh Ashford, Laura Benanti, Alex Brightman, James Monroe Iglehart, Richard Kind, Rob McClure, Ashley Park, Christopher Sieber, and John Stamos. Productions followed at Capital Repertory Theatre in Albany and Segal Centre for Performing Arts in Montreal. A hit with critics and audiences alike, Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors has been praised by the Albany Times Union as “a raucous comedy, done with impeccable adroitness …stuffed with sight gags, wordplay and lightning-fast costume changes,” and described as “a delicious comedic romp” by Berkshire Edge. El falso retrato de Rosario Castellanos

Antes de entrar en el tema de esta publicación, nos complace presentar a un nuevo ser cósmico que ha decidido manifestarse en este blog: Nebulosa del Lobo Oscuro. Esperemos que disfruten su reflexión y que los astros nuevamente se dispongan de la manera óptima para que volvamos a gozar de su presencia.

Empecemos

Yo de cine sé muy poco, pero los libros me encantan y tengo en alta estima a ciertos escritores, especialmente a Rosario Castellanos, por eso me emocioné cuando descubrí Los Adioses, película de Natalia Beristáin que presumía estar basada en la vida de Rosario.

A través de la publicidad fui descubriendo que la película en realidad se basa en la vida de pareja que vivieron Rosario Castellanos y Ricardo Guerra (su esposo durante 13 años) y no sobre el resto de aspectos de la vida de la escritora, sin embargo, decidí no armarme prejuicios hasta verla. Cuando salí de la película tuve sentimientos encontrados, por un lado la fotografía es delicada, suave, gentil, las escenas sexuales están tan bien manejadas que el erotismo es lo predominante, no existe un morbo insistente por descubrir la vida sexual de una mujer escritora que se muestra vulnerable desde las primeras escenas. Hubo secuencias que me encantaron como el discurso sobre las mujeres, los poemas bien acomodados de acuerdo a las escenas y la voz pausada y dulce de Karina Gidi quien interpreta a Rosario; además, debo acentuar, que mostrar el cuerpo imperfecto de la actriz me pareció un detalle sencillo que agradecí.

Por otro lado, también me hicieron ruido algunos detalles incómodos, como la cronología de la historia, difícil de llevar como espectador, la trama se desarrolla en el vaivén de una relación tóxica, los personajes principales son dos y en cierto punto parecen hasta exclusivos, no sólo en la película, sino el uno para el otro y lo único que la película da como contexto es la época, no hay un entorno social ni intelectual evidente, cuando ambos personajes son piezas importantes en la vida intelectual del México de los años 50 a los 80.

No es una película sobre la vida de Rosario Castellanos o Ricardo Guerra, es una película sobre una relación tóxica y lo acentúo porque la película tiene errores biográficos graves que parece que anexaron en un intento desesperado por agregar información extra que la trama no necesita, además, la construcción de personajes es deficiente por la carencia de contexto, quizá de manera individual los actores si tuvieron asesores o investigaron sobre la vida de los personajes, pero para el espectador es difícil entender la obsesión de Rosario por escribir, por irse a España y hasta insistir quedarse con alguien que le exige constantemente algo que ella no está dispuesta a dar, logrando que el personaje sea plano, no tenga ningún tipo de crecimiento y su conflicto parezca generado de manera gratuita.

En cuanto a Ricardo Guerra, parece que la película se centra en él y su necesidad de cariño, ese que le mendiga a Rosario y ésta, al estar obsesionada con escribir, se lo niega, logrando así justificar la aparente única infidelidad de él hacia ella. No es una historia bien contada, tiene un principio, un medio y un final que podría contarse con una cronología lineal y no intercalada, generando más bien tedio porque no se encuentran vínculos en la estructura; la relación entre los personajes cambia, pero ellos no, a pesar de hechos tan fuertes como un aborto; el conflicto se centra en la relación entre ellos dejando a los personajes como un mero pretexto para querer narrar una historia, pero más allá de lo bien o mal que está contada y que podría disfrutarse de manera meramente visual y quizá poética, la película comete errores grandes, muestra a una de las mujeres más importantes para el feminismo mexicano como una persona nada compleja, caprichosa, obsesiva y mala madre, la reducen a su vida marital.

Lo triste de la película y por lo que me he quejado tanto desde que la vi, es el esfuerzo que se le está poniendo para su difusión y lo que verá la gente es una ficción creyendo que es verídico, aunque la directora admita que contó lo que ella quería contar, acabó mostrando a un personaje simple, sus logros no se entienden porque no hay nadie explicándote que las mujeres Chiapanechas de 1930 eran juzgadas por estudiar y hasta desterradas de sus casas, nadie te explica lo complejo que era ganarse una beca Rockefeller o que se ganó el respeto de los intelectuales de su época por ser esa mujer dura, sarcástica e inteligente que no muestran y la reducen exclusivamente a un tema de hogar.

En su tesis titulada “Sobre la cultura femenina” y posteriormente en su ensayo (titulado por la editorial pues ella no le puso nombre) “Declaración de fé” Rosario Castellanos muestra con evidencia histórica el cómo la imagen de la mujer es una manipulación de la percepción del hombre y la feminidad realmente no existe, revela la forma en la que la mujer era reducida a lo que acaban de hacer con su imagen: una mujer temperamental, emocional, sentimental, obsesiva y eso me parece peligroso, porque en una época en la que se sigue culpando a las mujeres por ser libres, se proyecta la imagen falsa de una mujer que podría ser ejemplo de liberación, en un medio de difusión masiva se le está condenando al rincón de las neuróticas, víctima de su propio temperamento, culpable de ser engañada, cuando lo necesario a mostrar es el valor de dejar atrás una relación tóxica y luchar por lo que quieres ser derribando las barreras que conlleva el ser mujer.

Si usted ya vio la película (o va a verla) quiero aclararle ciertos puntos:

El hermano de Rosario Castellanos murió a los siete años

Rosario no regresó a casa de sus padres porque éstos murieron cuando ella tenía 21 años y su familia ultra conservadora no quería ni verla después de haberse atrevido a salir de casa para estudiar.

Ricardo Guerra engañó a Rosario más de una vez con sus colegas y alumnas (hay quienes dicen que el poco amor que Ricardo le tenía a Rosario se mostraba en las cartas sobre las que se supone está basada la película)

Rosario tuvo un par de abortos involuntarios y perdió un hijo recién nacido antes de tener a Gabriel

Dolores Castro, mejor amiga de Rosario, decía que la razón por la cual Rosario se casó con Ricardo fue la presión que tenía por sentirse sola

Rosario peleaba por la presencia de las mujeres en la vida política y social, el voto no era suficiente, el voto sólo era un premio de consolación

Rosario evidenció la precaria vida indígena y trabajó para mejorarla cuando ocupó cargos en institutos de cultura chiapaneca

The South Korean production of The Phantom of the Opera will be featured in a documentary called The Show Must Go On from theatre director Sammi Cannold and Emmy-winning filmmaker Dori Berinstein. It will premiere at the Majestic Theatre in Broadway on August 9 and will also serve as a a one-night-only fundraising event benefiting The Actors Fund.

From director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw, The Prom is based loosely on a real-life incident. The musical follows a troupe of hilariously self-obsessed theater stars of a certain age who swarm into a small conservative Indiana town in support of a high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom. The concept is from Jack Viertel with a book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin, music by Matthew Sklar and lyrics by Beguelin. Show’s producers are Bill Damaschke, Dori Berinstein and Jack Lane.

Preacher Finds a Corpse is an absolute pleasure to read. Reminiscent of Charlaine Harris’s mysteries and Barbara Kingsolver’s early novels like Animal Dreams and The Bean Trees, it’s full of quirky characters who animate the small town in which they live. Evan Wycliff is a complex and compelling protagonist, conflicted and lost in his own life but nevertheless fiercely dedicated to uncovering the truth about his friend Bob Taggart’s death. Jones manages to infuse a deceptively simple story with suspense, angst, and whimsy, as well as surprise. His command of setting, history, and behavior is beyond exceptional. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
