Roi's captivating journey in Berlín: on defying authority, seeking approval and exploring his desire…

Or a long meta nobody asked for in which I delve into why he’s the best character in this spinoff and why his "romance" with Cameron unfortunately didn’t really make sense.

Foreword : I'm a sucker for nerdy male fictional characters with a hidden hint of confidence, a dark/tragic backstory, who wear the slutty glasses™ and look like they never felt the touch of a woman—of course when Roi was firstly introduced, I knew from the start that he's going to live in my mind rent free for the upcoming months.

From the very first episode, it becomes clear that Berlín unravels as a tale centered around love. Nevertheless, it extends beyond romantic love, notwithstanding the musings of our chaotic, narcissistic dandy of a professional thief who philosophizes about the tantalizingly addictive energy of courtship, chase, and a lust he fervently desires. Although romantic love is prominently depicted as the main thread in the series, it is the comprehensive concept of Love that undergoes demystification, discussion, challenge, embrace, repulsion, and yearning.

The prevailing narrative of the entire season seemed to orbit a distinctive framework: romantic/carnal love, familial love, and self-love, stretching from birth to zenith and eventual demise. What particularly resonated with me was how the creators delved into the exploration of how these love forms can serve as both sources of freedom and imprisonment for the characters. It adds a poetic and meta layer when considering that this entire discussion unfolds against the backdrop of the Parisian landscape.

Within the fragrance that permeated this spinoff, Roi's storyline unquestionably stood out as the most intriguing among the banda. Despite its imperfections, particularly in the romantic aspect (which we'll talk about later), his evolution throughout the season seemed the most logical. To arrive at this conclusion, I believe it's essential to revisit storytelling basics and comprehend why, in my perspective, his arc made the most sense.

For a hero's journey to unfold successfully, it typically follows eight steps, and Roi's arc approximately adheres to these stages, employing a significant amount of telling and a bit of showing:

1. The Call: Running away from home at 13 and engaging in petty crimes. 2. The Threshold: Encountering Berlin at 17 and finally getting out of juvie. 3. + 4. The Challenges and The Abyss: Following the Boss's orders—retrieving the calice, "babysitting" Cameron, and maintaining a distance from her. 5. The Transformation: Failing to comply with orders and defying lover!Berlin. 6. The Revelation: Disclosing the truth to Berlin about the lost necklace during the night at the race, leading to approval and apology. 7. The Atonement: Evading the police, and Roi expressing gratitude for Berlin's guidance and lessons in self-control. 8. The Return (with a Gift): Successfully reaching Madrid, leaving the narrative with a seemingly happy ending, though the final details remain unknown.

Having observed a portion of his journey, Roi's character possesses a distinctive charm, largely stemming from the preconceived notions we harbor about him—"the youngster," "the naive and charming boy who simply follows instructions." I am inclined to think that the most notable feature of his arc this season is its "coming-of-age" essence that resonates with many. He strives to liberate himself from the constraints of unquestioning obedience to Berlin, opting instead to be guided by instinct, explore desire, embrace his identity, and assert his free will.

I truly enjoyed the universal elements in his relationship with Berlin: the admiration, care, the vulnerability and pride. I couldn't get enough of their scenes and wished for more. I was particularly intrigued to know a bit more about Berlin's perspective on education and how he imparted his principles to Roi. Surprisingly, it's refreshing to witness how the young man, contrary to expectations, isn't a Berlin Jr., but rather a wiser, more innocent, and stern version of himself.

Roi's evolution from a runaway orphan misfit to a disciplined young man was truly captivating, primarily because it allowed us to connect with him emotionally. He became the only character who shared such a precious and intimate piece of himself, giving us insight into why Berlin holds such significance for him. This added layer of vulnerability only serves to enhance his endearing personality.

On that note, I admire the way his naivety, which parallels Rio in La Casa de Papel, contrasts with his playfulness and extroversion. Roi's serious demeanor is understandable, considering his challenging upbringing both at home and in juvenile detention; he had to be self-reliant and fight his way through life. His skill in unlocking doors provided a glimpse of his delicacy and patience, making him genuinely distinctive. Indeed, the calmness, uncertainty, and darkness were further echoed in his casual attire and color palette—comprising blue, grey, and black.

I could extensively discuss Roi's incredible personality and his son/father relationship he has with Andres, but unfortunately, I just have to talk about the bad. Yes, Roi's story arc has some limitations that left me a bit disappointed, considering the amazing potential within his character. While he ended up demonstrating maturity and professionalism throughout the series, there was a certain immaturity when it came to matters of "love".

I guess that now is a good time to address the elephant in the room: his (quite underwhelming) "romantic" relationship with Cameron. I find myself somewhat blaming the trailer, as it led me to believe I was in for a compelling love story with a unique approach to the "bad girl/good boy trope" (which I adore). I was particularly displeased with how misleading the "lock picking" and the "No me mires" tattoo scenes in the pilot were, as they seemed to be included solely to inject a bit of sexiness into the show.

Listen, I'm a big fan of romance, and one thing that most romance enthusiast tend to do is approaching love stories in two distinct parts: 1) understanding the characters before the relationship, how they function individually, and 2) how the relationship will shape their individual growth and their growth together.

This is often observed through well-known romantic tropes that typically bring characters together and facilitate both physical and emotional connections. So, let's examine which tropes influenced their interactions: work colleagues, forced proximity, tending wounds (and the somewhat cliché "insta love"). This description may seem fitting at first glance, innit? But did these tropes truly work for them?

One crucial factor to consider is time: I strongly believe that a majority of love stories are slow burns that unfold over different spans. And sorry, chief, but timing wasn't on their side.

Apologies to all the Cameroi shippers out there, but I found it difficult to believe in their relationship, and it felt underwhelming for both characters. After finishing Season 1, opting for a platonic relationship might have been the better choice for them. Let me elaborate on why.

If Pina and Martínez Lobato truly intended to highlight romance (which was a bit overwhelming because literally, everyone had a romantic arc—like babe, it’s too much), especially a romance that made sense for the characters, they should have incorporated more angst and a slow burn. Why? Because, in this season, neither of Roi and Cameron are in the right place to fall in love.

On one hand, Roi's (scarce) romantic history reveals his naivety and idealized perception of love. To be frank, I would even go so far as to say his experience is practically nonexistent. His feelings seemed more like infatuation than genuine love, which requires a deeper connection that they didn't really have time to develop.

A part of me thinks Berlin's "strict" teachings about women played a role. The scene in 1.01 in the bathroom somewhat confirmed that Berlin might have admonished Roi in the past, likely instructing him on managing his hormones. Additionally, when our sweet summer child assured Berlin that he didn't initiate or encourage such behavior with Cameron, it became evident that being prudish was a lesson he had clearly absorbed.

Being a reserved young gentleman who wouldn't dare to meet the eyes of a woman he fancies, in contrast to the charismatic lover Berlin, I'm inclined to think he still has his V card—I can't interfere; it's a canon event.

If Roi seriously lacks experience with women, despite his first and only teenage romantic involvement during juvenile detention, it's only natural that he would stumble. This is evident in his interactions with Cameron. His steps are endearing and pure, but also somewhat messy and oddly quick. For someone who hates being seen as an obedient puppy, he swiftly follows Cameron's suggestion about the glasses, removing them instantly. I found this moment quite intriguing. It would have made more sense in 1.04, right after the quarrel at Polignac house. Removing them on that same night would have heightened the scene's impact and symbolically marked the transition from the old to the new Roi. Then again, taking time is crucial. It could have mirrored the fear of crossing boundaries and played with the symbolic idea that desire mirrors fear.

(**internal screaming** The creators missed an opportunity to delve deeper into the use of mirror imagery and internal conflict.)

That's why his “love” confession to Cameron in 1.07 appeared laughable, rushed and childish. Indeed, as she aptly said, he has "no idea if they'd still be together if Jimmy wasn't part of the equation." How dare he? I feel like this scene was pivotal, opening the door for Roi to reflect on his advances and avoid rushing into things, making him more cautious about the "lines you cannot cross in love" that dad!Berlin warned him about.

Yes, in the lights of his "romantic" arc, Roi had an illusion of love. Were there emotions involved? Certainly, especially since she helped him discuss his past. Lust? Absolutely.

As for Cameron, she's still grappling with trauma from her last relationship (to be honest, given all the suspense, her backstory was quite disappointing). It would have been in line with her character to step back from love and take some time to focus on herself before engaging in anything new. If the creators really wanted to push the romance, they could have only focused on subtle gestures like handholding and meaningful gazes to build the romantic tension, and not just sexual tension.

I didn't appreciate how they were quickly and overly physical with each other. The emphasis on physical touch didn't enhance the pseudo-emotional intimacy. In fact, I don't believe Cameron fell in love or became very infatuated with Roi. I would have preferred her to embody the femme fatale vibe Esther and Alex gave her and maintain a more casual relationship. Yielding to Roi's advances in the end seemed out of character because she should have been triggered, wary of falling deeply in love again and hurting our sweet baby boy Roi.

This is why their kiss felt unnecessarily desperate and passionate. A simple hug would have sufficed. I understand the fear of not seeing each other for three days, but the purpose of Cameron's words in between kisses, like "promise me" and "I can't myself," left me confused and mainly with unanswered questions. It's even more frustrating when we overlook her role in the heist and the unique talent that makes her authentic in the crew.

To wrap up, I believe both of these characters should have been individually explored. Consider the Octopus and the No me mires tattoos, for instance. Why introduce his through Cameron? Why didn't Roi ask about the meaning behind hers? Exploring this could have provided intriguing clues about her past. We could have witnessed a compelling scene of Roi changing, letting the audience notice the tattoos and prompting questions about their significance. Am I surprised that an entire episode is named after his tattoo, yet its origin remains undisclosed? Not at this point. Consequently, I found it difficult to connect with their bonding over the tattoos.

Despite being 23, their story really felt like a teenage love affair. I suppose I'll let fanfiction fill the void left (or do it myself with missing scenes and an eventual ofc, considering Roi is such fanfiction material).

All in all, Roi was undoubtedly the most captivating character. Performed by a wonderful Julio Peña, he skillfully broke the rules and awkwardly embraced his desires, ultimately earning the approval of his second father figure. I'm uncertain about what to expect in a potential Season 2, but one thing I absolutely need more than ever is flashbacks and explanations, especially given it's fucking Berlin's golden age.

So I've been thinking about OFMD and piracy as a metaphor for queerness/queer culture.

I'm sure many others have mentioned it, but I think the flag in "Our Flag Means Death" has a double meaning: a pirate's flag as well as a nod to the modern queer flags, since being queer/trans can be a death sentence for many.

The :"age of piracy" coming to an end reminds me of the outrageously queer culture of Weimar-era Berlin, which effectively ended when the Nazis took over in the early 1930's.

Gays. lesbians, trans people, cross dressers, and everyone in between seemed to thrive in Weimar Berlin, just as they seem to on the high seas in OFMD.

The increasing threat of the British navy would obviously be the stand-in for the Nazi takeover in this reading.

One could also apply this metaphor to today's world and particularly the USA, where a queer renaissance in media and increasing awareness of gender.and sexuality diversity over the past 10-15 years clashes with a strong conservative backlash that fights to restrict and criminalize the queer community.

LOCATION. JOHANN'S PRIMARY OFFICE. Eugen-Leopold Platz 1, berlin.

Johann works in undisclosed subsidiary security company from Switzerland &. the company's headquarter is located in Eugen-Leopold Platz 1, outside of hackescher markt, berlin. it is one of most recognizable buildings amongst of commercials buildings on the corner of the market as it was meant to be built for an advertisement company by its completion in 2011, however after four years of operation, the advertisement company had gone bankrupt &. the security company chose its new headquarter place in berlin.

Designed by Hermann Schultz, this 8,800 m² building was an actualization of the previous company's vision: Orchestra of Ideas. The building was designed to mimic a modern orchestra house &. its interwoven instrumental imagery. The work surfaces are arranged around the central stage, with an atrium connecting all of the floors &. work spaces. the ground floor has reception, lobby, restaurant &. urban space. the company chose this building as a perfect cover-up of security services dealings that go through the company; an orchestra of safety.

As general counsel of the company, Johann's office is located on the sixth floor of this eight stories building. The whole floor is floor is for the legal department. the office is a combination of closed but transparent office cells with open areas that create a spatial continuum that enables informal encounters &. concentrated work at the same time.

Upon walking from the escalator / lift, the visitor will be welcomed by the front office where johann's secretary resides &. a guest meeting room as an extension of the front office. within the front office, there's a modern designed sofa for the visitor to sit whilst waiting for the meeting. because of the transparent window/door that divide the front room &. the meeting room, a person can see the meeting takes place.

furthermore, when a person walks through the lobby on the left side of the front office, soon they will be welcomed by a bigger meeting room, of which people call it as a conference room. within this place, it can hold about twenty to twenty five people thus accommodating larger discussions / meetings than the front office. on the right side of the conference room, there's a couple of paralegals &. legal assistants offices. the senior legal counsels &. legal counsels offices are the left side as an extension from the press conference room which eventually make a box shaped floor.

johann's office is situated between the conference room &. legal counsels' offices. upon walking to his office, a person will be welcomed by modern abstract painting that matches the modern facade of the building alongside of several black &. white industrial photographs captured by johann's friends. there's also modern black sofa in between before johann's personal desk. johann's personal desk is a modern oak table with dark green deskmat &. trinkets such as steel globe, industrial desk lamp, personal photos on the corner of the desk &. a laptop that he carries than using computer. behind the desk, there's a small storage that keeps documents &. books he reads &. a safe box beside of it. there's not much that can describe his personality, however he keeps personal photos such as a picture of him &. his mother on his first day as a law student, a picture of him &. his cousin, nina, &. pictures of nina's triplets as well as one of triplets' drawing he keeps as a reminder of the family he barely connects despite being in germany.

johann continuously goes back & forth between his office in bern, new york, london, &. others however he sees the berlin office as his primary office.

When the Soviets experimented on Bucky, reprogramming him to become the WInter Soldier, do you think they taught him charm? Did they program him to smile? To laugh? Charm, to endear? 

They taught him to use so many weapons, we see a range of guns, and rocket launchers, and disk grenades. All sorts, all used to maximum deadly effect. And charm is definitely a weapon, if you use it right. It can get you into places, earn the trust of a target. It’s useful when finding a convenient alcove or massacring a room aren’t viable options. 

We know they must have in the comics. One of the very first missions the Winter Soldier is sent on, he joins a group of American and British Soldiers, who think they’re one of them and let him into West Berlin. He spends the night with them in a bar, before their jeep mysteriously overturns in the morning.  

We are told he lost everything when he was recovered, and that they wiped his brain of anything else. So they obviously taught him some sort of social skills, and enough to allow him to join this group within the same night of meeting them. 

A charming assassin, one that could not only strike from afar, or clear a room with a rain of bullets, but also get his target to trust him, now that would be valuable. But an assassin that the Americans, the West, accept as one of their own? That they drink with, laugh with, let into their trust? That’s more than just valuable, that’s a golden opportunity you definitely don’t throw away. 

So. 

Imagine you’re a diplomat. It’s a big party, a ball, you know the ones. It's for "business", really, but behind closed doors, it's an excuse to show off and drink more than you should. You and your group hit the bar early, and soon enough you’re feeling warm and happy, talking and laughing and chatting away. 

You come back to the group from the bathroom, and you’re introduced to a young, handsome man. A strong gloved grip, a sharp jawline, combed hair and a warm Brooklyn accent. Introductions are kinda par for the course, it's that kind of party. You ask him where he’s from, and he laughs, gesturing somewhere in the throng, and starts telling a story that has you and your group laughing in a few minutes. You’re not sure who he came with, but this is your fifth glass and, honestly? At this point, you don’t care. He’s charming, he makes small talk, flatters the women, and laughs along with the men. 

James, he introduces himself as, and in no time at all it feels like you’ve known each other all your life. 

The next time you try to stumble over to the bar, he laughs, and puts a hand on your shoulder, and declares to cheers that it’s his turn to get everyone a round. Well, it's a free bar, but your legs thank you for the rest and you stay standing around laughing with the others at some crude joke the ambassador for Austria just made. You didn’t quite hear the punchline, but you find yourself laughing nonetheless. 

You take the drink James gives you, down it like all the others. 

Soon enough it’s getting late. You feel a little woozy, and you could kill for a smoke right about now, and, laughing, your new friend joins you, with a warm smile and an arm around your shoulders. 

The air outside is crisp, and it's lightly snowing. James offers you a light, and you readily accept, and before long it's just the two of you, out the back, leaning against the concrete wall, blowing smoke into the air.

You’ve taken two long drafts of your cigarette, eyes closed as the crisp night bites at your cheeks, when you feel the knife slide between your ribs. You choke on the smoke between your lips, pain flaring in your side. You swear sharp metal of the knife feels as cold as the snow that falls on your cheeks and catches in your eyelashes. 

You turn to see James, the mystery man that smiled, laughed, flirted and flattered. Twisting the knife deeper into your side, and plunging a second into your chest.  

As he stares into your face, and you stare back at his, gaping, you realise.

His eyes.

All through the night, despite the laughing and the smiling, it never quite reached his eyes. They’re cold, and dull, a steely blue. 

And deep inside, maybe a little sad. 

Not James. The Soldier.

And if his cold, hard stare falters for a moment when his eyes catch the old war medal on your chest, the one from your granddad, the one you’ve always worn to these, ever since you were sixteen, then what about it? You certainly wouldn’t see it, as you waste your last breaths begging for your life as the blood begins to flood your mouth. 

Because, really.

Why would he care about an old medal from the 107th?

Habe von der Folge ein paar Gifs gesehen und bin gespannt.

Erst einmal die Morgenroutine der beiden Kommissare. Karow scheint etwas organisierter. Wobei sie Rubin in einer anderen Folge auch schon beim Morgensport gezeigt haben, wenn ich mich richtig erinnere. Das scheinen sie bei diesen Tatorten ganz gerne zu machen. So wie sie häufig Leute beim Duschen filmen.

Werden solche Pakete nicht irgendwie überprüft? Könnte ja eine Bombe drin sein.

Jetzt müsste er ja eigentlich wissen, wer der Mörder ist.

Rudi? Rudi spielt im Film einen Auftragskiller. Wie lustig.

Einen Film als Geständnis zu drehen ist auch ein interessanter Einfall. Wobei, wenn man eine Videothek hat, ist das vielleicht naheliegend.

Naja, Nudeln mit Tomatensauce wäre jetzt auch nichts für mich, da bin ich bei Karow.

Der Auftragsmörder hätte auch ein paar handfeste Hinweise auf diese Organisation hinterlassen dürfen. Ein Film ist halt doch zu sehr Fiktion. Rubin sollte ihn sich auch mal anschauen.

Wollen sie nicht nach einem Durchsuchungsbefehl fragen? Wer von den beiden greift in die Mausefalle?

Karow sagt, er ist nichts anderes als Polizist. Das ist irgendwie ziemlich traurig.

Immerhin Rubin möchte sein Kumpel sein und bricht dazu mal mit ihm irgendwo ein.

Ah, die Mausefalle hat niemanden erwischt. Er hätte ja zum Spass einfach noch eine zweite dazu legen können.

Haben die das Kino da ganz für sich alleine? Ich glaube, so viele Energy Drinks sind nicht gesund.

Oh, den Regisseur hat's erwischt. Jetzt haben sie ja einen Grund weiter zu ermitteln.

Und jetzt wurde Rubin angefahren. Man muss aber auch besser aufpassen, wenn man auf die Strasse läuft.

Ist diese Badewanne nicht etwas kurz? Oder sieht das aus diesem Winkel nur so aus? Hm, dass Leute überfallen werden, wenn sie ganz nackt sind, sieht man auch eher selten.

An der Waffe müssten doch jetzt Fingerabdrücke vom Einbrecher sein. Hat ja nur einen Handschuh getragen. Wieso auch immer? Und Karow weiss, wer ihn überfallen hat.

Autsch, so kann man es auch machen, aber ich denke, es wäre schlauer jemanden aufzusuchen, der das nähen kann. Was macht er denn jetzt? Er hat doch die Fingerabdrücke auf der Waffe und kann auch beweisen, dass ihn jemand überfallen hat.

Das war haarscharf.

Wie kommts, dass die beiden im selben Krankenzimmer landen? Die gehen sich doch nach einem halben Tag auf die Nerven.

Das war ja ganz spannend. Die bösen Geheimdienste immer. Und man weiss halt nie, ob es da tatsächlich noch was gibt oder nicht.

Hello my little grieving friends (aka my CREW!)

I just want to talk about how much our flag means death has given me. I have not had internet friends since i were a teenager. They all kind of disapeared over time in the same way as high school classmates went away. I have been on this blog on tumblr since 2010 and i have never experienced what ofmd has given me. Not even in my very derranged ca 5 year long sherlock-era did i get to befriend and know this many amazing people who live in my phone. Some of you have come and gone and that is life, but some of you are still here and I hope I get to keep you here for a very long time. Max can not stop us and I want to be here with you until tumblr is put down like the beloved rabid pet it is.

I think we are all taking the news very hard and I think it's important to remember what it is all about really. It's about love and family and above all else the crew so i just want to show some love for my beloved mutuals. And i hope maybe some of you will be inspired to do the same because its what we need in these dark times. We need to be a lighthouse guiding each other to shore.

We have been talking every single day since the first message over a year ago and I don't remember or want to remember how i survived before that. I loved our vacation together and we had so much to talk about that we didn't even realize that the same song kept playing in my car so long that it messed up my spotify wrapped. It was amazing taking naps with you outside ruins of castles and in botanical gardens and living together in the worlds smallest hotel room. I hope we can get lost together in more cities than Hamburg and Copenhagen. (preferably without rain and sickness and maybe with a map) 💕💕
