Meet Cute 1 - You had an assigned seat next to them at a wedding for a mutual friend

Y/N couldn’t help but groan internally when she wandered up to the table she was assigned to. Table 3, the table for close friends of the bride or groom. Table 2 was reserved for family members, table 1 for members of the wedding party. Table 3 was a good place for her to be.

But everyone at the table was a couple. And Y/N wanted to stab her own eyes out at the sight of that.

She hated weddings. When she was younger she loved them, finding them romantic and wonderful and magical and she loved attending those of her friends and family members.

But now she despised them. Because all of her closest friends were already either married or engaged and she was the one left out of that - the spinster of the friendship group. And she never normally minded, she was the ‘fun aunt’ of her friend’s kids and she adored being able to spend time with children without having to deal with the literal shit that came with them.

But at weddings it was awful because everyone expected her to be planning hers.

“Oh Y/N! I didn’t realise you were attending!” Y/N how wondered the knives supplied were when she heard the all-too familiar voice of Mary, a friend of a friend who always happened to be attending the same events as Y/N.

Y/N wondered if Mary had been put on the Earth simply to remind Y/N of her perpetual aloneness.

“Hello Mary,” Y/N restrained herself from rolling her eyes as she took her seat.

“Still alone?” Mary inquired and the question would have seemed innocent enough if it weren’t for the smile she had badly hidden.

“Do I look like I’m with anyone?” Y/N questioned in response before turning away from Mary to look at the man next to her, who was clearly trying to hold back a smile. “Is my isolation funny to you?” She asked him, but she smiled as she said it to let him know that she was only teasing.

“Only because I relate,” the man assured her. “I’m Bernie.”

“Y/N,” she took his outstretched hand. “Friend of the bride?” She questioned.

“Yeah, we went to primary school together,” he confirmed. “Friend of the groom?” Y/N nodded.

“Same situation.” Y/N took the glass of alcohol from in front of her and sipped it before pulling a face. “You know, they really could have supplied more pleasant alcohol for people like me who are planning on drinking their way through the evening.” Bernie burst out in laughter, setting the tone for the remainder of the meal.

When they had all finished eating, Y/N was approached by one of her friend’s daughters who demanded Y/N come and dance with her and her friends, an order that Y/N obliged to happily, anything to get away from Mary’s snide comments. She could feel Bernie’s eyes on her the entire time she danced with the group of kids and when the song ended she moved back over to the table.

For the second time that evening, Y/N stretched out her hand to him, a hopeful smile on her face.

“Dance with me?”

This is not the latest we've ever started the final round, but here we go!

For those who participated in the preliminary, I thank you for your time, but we're not done quite yet. The madness has only begun. After a chaotic end to the preliminary round in which contenders crashed out and unheralded underdogs rose in the final hours, who knows who takes this final? For the uninitiated, I have an Oscar-like ceremony on my blog celebrating all the movies of that year’s Movie Odyssey (all the movies I saw for the first time in their entirety) at the year’s end. For the last five years, I have asked family and friends to help out with the Best Original Song category - because in all other categories, you'd be forced to watch entire movies to decide it. This is a musical thank-you to those, who have contributed, in their own ways, to support the Movie Odyssey and me over the last calendar year.

I normally would have known if I would have asked folks to help participate in MOABOS around the end of summer. But due to work commitments, I had no idea whether or not we would be doing this as late as mid-October. I consider it very fortunate we were able to get this off the ground this year - some of you, interestingly enough, look forward to this every year for some strange reason.

As a result of this year's limitations, this is the one of the most monolingual fields we've ever had in a final. But that's not to besmirch the quality of music seen here. In one notable piece of MOABOS trivia, a Vietnamese-language song has reached the final for the first time. A record two songs in the final are from a documentary film (albeit they are from the same documentary).

INSTRUCTIONS Please rank (#1-15) your choices in order. The top ten songs will receive nominations. The tabulation method used in the preliminary round is being used for the final only as the second tiebreaker (the tabulation method that will be used principally for the final - aka "single transferable vote" - is described in the "PS"). There is no minimum or maximum amount of songs you can rank, but because of the nature of single transferable vote, it is highly recommended to rank as many songs as possible, rather than only one or two. Those who rank fewer songs run a greater risk of their ballots being discarded as I am counting the ballots. Again, this is all described in the "PS". Why not implement at a minimum number of songs to rank? Well, I believe in giving you folks as much freedom as possible.

Please consider to the best of your ability: how musically interesting the song is (including and not limited to musical phrasing and orchestration); its lyrics; context within the film (contextual blurbs provided for every entry for those who haven't seen the films); choreography/dance direction (if applicable); and the song's cultural impact/life outside the film (if applicable, and by far the least important factor). Imperfections in audio and video quality may not be used against any song. I encourage you to send in comments and reactions with your rankings - it’s always fun to read reactions to individual songs, and it usually makes the process (for everyone) more enjoyable!

The deadline for submission is Tuesday, December 31 at 7 PM Pacific Time / 5 PM Hawai'i / 6 PM Alaska / 9 PM Central / 10 PM Eastern. If you're across the Atlantic, that's New Year's Day at 3 AM GMT / 4 AM CET / 5 AM EET. There will be no deadline extensions.

TABULATION Like the preliminary... a respondent’s first choice receives 10 points, the second choice receives 9, the third choice receives 8, etc. HOWEVER, this points system is used only for tiebreaker purposes.

The winner is determined by a process called single transferable vote (the Academy Awards uses this method to choose a Best Picture winner, visually represented here - you should really watch this video if the below doesn't make sense... which it probably won't):

All #1 picks from all voters are tabulated. A song needs more than half of all aggregate votes to win (50% of all votes plus one... i.e. if there are thirty respondents, sixteen #1 votes are needed to win on the first count).

If there is no winner after the first count (as is most likely), the song(s) with the fewest #1 votes or points is/are eliminated. Placement will be determined by the tiebreakers described below. Then, we look at the ballots of those who voted for the last-placed song(s). Their votes then go to the highest-remaining and non-eliminated song on their ballot.

This process (in step #2) repeats until one song has secured 50% plus one of all votes. We keep eliminating nominees and transfer votes to the highest-ranked, non-eliminated song on each ballot. NOTE: It is possible after several rounds of counting that respondents who did not entirely fill in their ballots will have wasted their votes at the end of the process. For example, if a person voted the second-to-last place song as their #1, ranked no other songs, and the count has exceeded two rounds, their ballot is discarded (lowering the vote threshold needed to win), and they have no say in which song ultimately is the winner.

A song wins when it reaches more than fifty percent of all #1 and re-distributed votes.

“You look stressed,” Bernie mentioned, coming over to kiss Y/N’s cheek in greeting when he entered their apartment.

Y/N looked up and gave him an exhausted smile and shook her head with a long sigh.

“I’ve been doing wedding planning with our mothers all of today,” she confessed and Bernie couldn’t restrain himself from wincing a little. “Honestly, the only mild silver lining was that Elton wasn’t there,” she added musingly and Bernie chuckled, wrapping his arms around her from behind, resting his chin on the top of her head as he looked down at what he presumed was the guest list she was working on for their wedding, the date of which was closing in.

“That’s true - much as I love the guy, he’s an absolute menace when it comes down to our wedding.”

“I know it’s just because he wants amazing things for us but honestly if he suggests one more time that I should wear a peacock costume down the aisle you might have to say goodbye to your best friend,” she sighed, relaxing into Bernie’s arms as he laughed.

“He suggested that?”

“Well he suggested a blue and green dress with a feathery veil or hat and I dunno, it sounded pretty peacocky to me,” Y/N explained. Silence lapsed between them for a moment before Y/N spoke up again. “You wanna know something, Bern?”

“What’s that?” He mumbled, pressing his lips to the top of her head.

“I never pictured my wedding before I met you,” she told him, leaning her head back so that she could look in his face.

“I thought all girls did?” Bernie questioned, his lips tugging up into a grin but Y/N shrugged.

“Not me - always had other things to be thinking about,” she admitted. Bernie kissed her in response.

“I hope it’s a good thing you’re finally thinking about it, then.”

“Of course it is,” Y/N scoffed. “No one else I’d ever want at the end of the aisle.” Bernie’s grin grew exponentially wider at her words and he kissed her again before reaching down to take her hand in his, pressing his lips against it and squeezing it.

“God, I’m so lucky I have you.”

“Hi Mrs Taupin!” Y/N chirped as the door to Bernie’s home opened to reveal his mother. A smile greeted her.

“Good morning, Y/N! I wasn’t expecting you today,” she said, ushering the girl into the warmth of the house.

“Bernie called and asked me to come over - apparently he’s got some big news,” she laughed.

“First I’ve heard of it - honestly, you’re my news outlet for Bernie and he’s my son,” Mrs Taupin chuckled.

Y/N and Bernie had been together since they were fifteen, having gone to the same school for as long as they could remember, growing up in the same town. They had liked each other for much longer before that and yet it took Bernie five years to muster up the courage to ask the girl out during year eleven.

Y/N had said yes and they had been together ever since.

Now they were seventeen years old. 

Y/N had gone to college, trying to get her A-Levels so she could go to university, whereas Bernie had dropped out, to the mild disappointment of his parents, and had decided to pursue song writing instead. 

Y/N had known Bernie’s mother and father almost as long as she had known Bernie, what with it being a small town and everyone knowing everyone. But they had only started going past the pleasantries after Bernie and Y/N started dating. It was rare now for a Sunday to go past where his mother didn’t invite Y/N over to share their Sunday lunch with them. 

Bernie’s parents adored Y/N.

“Well, you know where his room is,” Mrs Taupin smiled. “I’ll make you some tea.”

“Thank you so much Mrs Taupin,” she grinned, taking the stairs two at a time up to the upper level of Bernie’s home.

“Thought I heard you,” Bernie grinned, stepping out into the hallway.

“Hey!” Y/N rushed into his arms, hugging him tightly.

“I haven’t even told you my news yet and you’re this excited,” Bernie laughed, kissing the top of her head.

“I just missed you is all - school isn’t the same when you’re not there,” Y/N pouted. Bernie kissed her gently.

“I’m sorry, love,” Y/N shook her head.

“What’s your news?” She asked instead, following him into his room and collapsing onto his bed, the two of them sitting facing one another in his childhood bedroom.

“Remember how I sent off those lyrics to that music agency?” He asked and Y/N nodded. “Well... they gave them to a songwriter - he’s new to the business, just like I am - and I got sent a tape today in the mail! He’s out music to my lyrics!” Bernie laughed. Y/N squealed and launched herself over the bed to tackle him into a hug.

“Holy shit, Bern! That’s awesome!” She grinned, peppering little kisses all over his face until he was laughing and begging her to stop. He slid his hand into her hair and brought her down for a proper kiss.

“And he said he wants to meet me to talk about the possible future of us working together,” Bernie added. Y/N sighed and rested her head on his chest.

“My boyfriend’s going to be famous,” she murmured.

“You haven’t even heard the songs yet,”

“I don’t have to - they’re your lyrics so they’re bound to be perfect.”

“You kept this from me for three months?” Bernie reiterated, wide eyed and staring at her, eyes flicking between her stomach and her eyes.

Y/N bit her lip, nodding awkwardly.

“Three months!” Bernie repeated, shaking his head.

“I know, I’m sorry!  I didn’t mean it - I’m sorry! If I could invent a time machine and go back and change it I would,” Y/N grimaced and sighed. “I know I should have told you the moment I found out it’s just.... you’ve been so... busy.” Her eyes filled with tears and she looked down and away from Bernie.

“Oh, sweetheart,” Bernie sighed, reaching out and grabbing his hand, rubbing his thumb along the back of her hand gently.

“I’m sorry, Bern, I should have told you earlier,” she sniffled and Bernie sighed again, tugging on her hand to pull her into a hug.

“Yeah,” he said mutely. “You should have,” he agreed. “But... it doesn’t change anything anyway,” he murmured into her hair.

“What do you mean?”

“I’m still going to be a dad - we’re going to be parents anyway, even though you didn’t tell me straight away. I love you regardless and I’m going to love our baby,” Bernie promised, pressing a long kiss to her forehead. 

Y/N nuzzled into his touch.

“I’m sorry,” she said again but Bernie shrugged.

“We’re going to be a family.”

Ahhh I fell in love with Bernie in rocketman!! Maybe it’s the scene where Bernie and Elton meet and they start doing that little singing thing in the cafe and maybe a third voice joins in (reader) and they all spend that fun night together. Throughout Bernie and reader realise they like each other?

He’s just so fucking cute, dude, this is my first time writing for him so I hope it’s okay :)

Bernie and Elton looked around at the sound of another voice joining in with their singing. Excitement lit up on both of their faces having found each other who loved the song, and someone else in the little cafe who were singing too.

“Over there!” Elton finally laughed, pointing out the woman, who was sat with her head burried in a book, her lips moving to sing the song quietly.

She looked up when she realised the other two had stopped singing and Bernie and Elton grinned at her. The woman closed her eyes and looked down in clear embarrassment, though a gentle smile grew on her face. Elton laughed and stood, grabbing Bernie’s hand and dragging his new friend over.

“I’m Elton!” He grinned, offering his hand. The woman took it awkwardly.

“Y/N,” she supplied. “Elton’s a cool name,” she added and Elton’s smile grew impossibly wider.

“Well… it’s just my stage name but-”

“You have a stage name?” Y/N gaped, eyes widening.

“Elton’s here going to be a famous singer,” Bernie stated proudly. Elton slipped into the chair opposite Y/N and Bernie took that as his cue to sit next to her. “I’m Bernie,”

“It’s nice to meet you,” Y/N smiled, taking his hand. “So where do you fit into the ‘famous singer’ thing?” Elton and Bernie grinned at each other.

“I’m a song writer,” Bernie shrugged bashfully, trying to play off his talent.

“A bloody amazing one!” Elton put in and Bernie felt the colour flush to his cheeks.

“That’s so cool!” The redness of Bernie’s cheeks deepened under her smiling look.

“We’re going to go out tonight-”

“We are?” Bernie cut him off and Elton looked at his new friend with a wink.

“Yes - do you want to come?” Y/N bit her lip and looked down at the book in her hand before giving a slightly hesitant nod.

“Yeah - yeah that sounds like fun,” she agreed.

“I’ll walk you home!” Bernie laughed, nudging her. His words were slurred slightly from the beer he had been consuming and it caused Y/N to giggle.

“Are you sure it shouldn’t be me walking you home?” She offered. “You’re piss-drunk, Bernie,” she teased. Bernie smiled at her and linked their arms together, leaning against her slightly.

“As long as I spend more time with you,” he insisted and Y/N threw her head back in laughter, loving how confident Bernie had become as soon as they had hit the pub together.

“You’re so cute,” she told him.

“If you think I’m cute will you go out with me?” Bernie asked hopefully. Y/N shook her head at him, an adoring smile painted on her face.

“Ask me when you’re sober, Bern.”

“Elton? There’s some girl here? She says she knows you?” Ray asked, coming backstage to look at Elton with a questioning look. Bernie looked up from his papers where he was working on lyrics for a new song. Elton stood up in excitement, eyes widening slightly.

“H/C hair and E/C eyes?” He asked and Ray nodded, looking to Bernie in confusion as Elton clapped his hands together, grin widening.

“That’s Y/N!” He laughed, rushing to the door. Ray put his hand on the handle and stopped Elton. 

“You can’t go out there - I’ll go get her,” he said, shaking his head slightly with amusement clear on his face. Elton sighed but headed back to where he had been sitting.

“Who’s Y/N?” Bernie asked once Ray had left the room again.

“She’s my best friend,” Elton said, his face brightening up once more. “We lived on the same street and spent ages hanging out together when we were younger but she’s at uni at Swansea now so I don’t see her very often.” Elton shook his head slightly. “I thought she was joking about coming up for the show,” he admitted. 

The door opened and Elton stood again, running over and embracing the woman who entered in a bone-crushing hug.

“Hey buddy!” Y/N laughed, hugging him back and the two friends swayed gently from side to side.

“It’s so good to see you,” Elton sighed, leaning back and looking at her.

“You too, Reg,” Y/N looked over to Bernie and raised her eyebrows. “You must be my replacement,” she grinned, letting go of Elton and walking to Bernie with her hand out. “I’m Y/N,”

“Bernie - Bernie Taupin,” Bernie whispered, finally regaining the ability to speak normally again.

“It’s nice to meet you, Reg talks about you a lot,”  Bernie felt heat rushing to his cheeks and Elton looked between the two of them with a knowing smile.

“It’s nice to meet you too,” Bernie said quietly, lowering his eyes.

“You’ll look after Y/N, right Bernie?” Elton asked, winking indiscreetly at his friend. Bernie’s face turned a deeper shade of red as he nodded, giving Y/N a shy smile that Y/N found adorable.

“Yeah, of course.”

“Okay, I’m going to do it,” Y/N decided, tipping her head back and swallowing down her beer and passing the empty bottle to Elton, whose face creased in a delighted smile.

“Really? That’s amazing!” He cheered.

“Do you know where he is?” She asked, craning her neck around in an attempt to look for her friend. 

“I think I saw him head to the dressing room?” Elton suggested, though Y/N could tell from the way that his pupils were dilated that he really was too drunk to know what was going on.

“Thanks,” Y/N said, clapping Elton on the back before slipping away back into the sea of people, fighting her way through the crowd to reach the door to Elton’s dressing room.

If she had been completely in her right mind, she perhaps would have heard the noises inside and comprehended them, understood what they meant for how Bernie was occupied. 

But, unfortunately for both party’s involved, Y/N was too out of it to notice and placed her hand on the door handle, pushing it down and entering into the room.

“Bernie?” She called, squinting into the dim lighting. “Bern?” She heard a gasp of pleasure and her hand flew to her mouth.

“Shit,” Bernie’s voice was unmistakable to her even through his moan. “Fuck!” He groaned. “Y/N?” 

“My name’s Lisa!” The girl writhing underneath him said, though her words were cut off by a loud moan of pleasure.

“No, Y/N!” Bernie called, stepping away from the girl - Lisa - he had been together with, causing her to fall away from him. Y/N turned away, her cheeks burning and her hand still covering her mouth. “Y/N? What are you doing here?” Bernie asked. He placed a hand on her shoulder a few minutes later and Y/N turned to see he had pulled on his jeans. 

Lisa was lying there, visibly pissed off, glaring between Bernie  and Y/N.

“I had to talk to you,” Y/N whispered desperately.

“You didn’t tell me you had a fucking girlfriend,” Lisa huffed, standing up and throwing on her clothes.

“I’m - um - sorry, no I’m not his...” Y/N trailed off, shaking her head slightly, feeling tears pricking her eyes. Amongst everyone that she knew and regularly spoke to, it was an unspoken thing that she and Bernie were essentially a couple. There feelings for one another were something known to everyone but themselves, their obliviousness being the only thing preventing them from becoming an actual couple.

“What did you need to talk to me about?” Bernie asked gently, his hand still set on her shoulder in an attempt to comfort her. Y/N glanced between him and Lisa before lowering her head, shaking it slightly.

“It doesn’t matter anymore.”

“We need to tell him at some point,” Bernie finally broke the silence, trailing his fingers lightly along the bare skin of Y/N’s side as she lay curled up into him.

Y/N sighed and nodded.

“I know, I just...” she sighed again.

“I get it, love, I know. I don’t want to tell him either,” Bernie agreed, running his fingers down her body and linking their hands together, bringing their hands up to his lips and kissing the back of her hand gently.

“I think he’d be okay with it,” Y/N theorised quietly.

“I think he would,” Bernie agreed quickly.

“It would just...”

“Take some time,” the two of them sighed together, light laughs escaping both of their lips. This was a conversation they had had many times and were sure to have often in the future until they either told Elton... or broke up.

“He’s going to be pissed that Ray found out first,” Y/N spoke again a few minutes later.

“It’s not like we told him,” Bernie argued gently, playing with her fingers, intertwined with hers.

“I’m not sure that’s going to matter to him, Ray knew before he did - and he’s our best friend,” Bernie squeezed Y/N slightly tighter.

“I like this though,” he admitted. “Having you to myself,” he clarified. Y/N looked up with a soft smile on her face and kissed him gently.

“I like keeping this secret too, Bern, but... I’d also like to... you know, not keep it secret?” Bernie kissed her again and nodded.

“I know... so would I,” both of their eyes widened slightly at the sound of the front door opening.

“Bernie?” Elton hollered into the flat.

“I thought you said he’d be out all evening,” Y/N whispered, eyes wide and panicked, the expression mirrored exactly on Bernie’s face.

“He said he would be!” Bernie replied. The two of them froze as they heard the sound of the handle.

“Bernie?” Elton asked before cutting himself of by falling into peals of laughter

“We can explain!” Bernie said, almost hysterical. Elton straightened up, wiping tears of laughter from his eyes and shook his head.

“You two are absolute idiots for thinking I didn’t know.”
