You cannot tell me that when Lan Sizhui improves his guqin language, he wouldn’t be out using inquiry every damn day to talk to spirits and make little ghost friends.
The minute that boy knows how to have full conversations via guqin, he’s gonna know every spirit in Gusu on a personal level and casually bring them up in conversation with the other juniors.
LJY: “These loquats are sooooo goooood!”
LSZ: “Right? Reminds me of A-Liu, he loves loquats”
LJY: “….Who the hell is A-Liu?”
LSZ: “Hm? Oh, he’s the spirit who likes to visit the cold springs.”
LJY: “The… the cold springs? How often is he there?”
LSZ: “Um, I don’t know? A lot? Whenever he wants to be there, I guess”
LJY: *panicked* “Was he there last night?!”
LSZ: “…..How would I kno—“
LJY: “WAS HE THERE LAST NIGHT? ASK HIM RIGHT NOW”

hahaha i want to write a modern!au with wwx as the ultimate Dilf who has “accidentally” adopted jingyi and sizhui AND zizhen. he’s a hot single dad that is ridiculously popular with all the pta moms and is constantly getting hit on by milfs. his children are chaos gremlins from hell and they love him very much. lwj unfortunately finds him Very attractive even when jingyi and zizhen drew on his face with sharpie marker while he slept.

One afternoon while Wei Ying is preparing dinner, A-Yuan looks up from his toy trucks and asks, “Baba, how comes lots of people in my class have a mom, but I don’t?”
Wei Ying’s hands falter at the chopping board. “Every family is different,” he explains carefully. “One mom, two moms, one dad, two dads. There’s loads of options.”
“But who decides?”
“What do you mean, baobei?” Wei Ying asks.
A-Yuan looks at him like he’s being silly. “Who decides who gets one baba, or two babas, or ten babas?”
Wei Ying laughs. He’s relieved A-Yuan only seems curious and isn’t upset. “Well, grown ups usually decide if they want a husband or a wife. And then they have baby radishes together.” He gives A-Yuan’s nose a gentle poke, making the boy giggle. “But some people like me decide to do it alone.” His explanation is probably not the best, but A-Yuan’s questions have admittedly taken him by surprise.
“So grown ups can have a husband or a wife…” A-Yuan holds up two sticky fingers to demonstrate. “And Baba still doesn’t have anyone?”
“I—” Wei Ying is gobsmacked. He stares at A-Yuan with his mouth agape. A-Yuan looks at him expectantly, like he’s waiting to hear an explanation as to why his Baba is incapable of finding love. Wei Ying quickly turns away and starts plating out their food. “Dinner’s ready.”
“Aunty Yanli said—”
“Eat up, baby.” Wei Ying grins wide and feeds A-Yuan a mouthful of rice, effectively shutting him up. And that’s the end of that.
Or so he thinks.
The next morning on the school playground, A-Yuan escapes from Wei Ying’s hold the second he spots Lan Jingyi, running into his friend’s arms like they’ve been separated for years. They see each other every weekday, and sometimes on the weekends too.
Wei Ying laughs and spots Jingyi’s dad looking similarly amused. The sun is out today and Lan Zhan’s pretty eyes sparkle in the sunlight. He’s utterly breathtaking. Wei Ying's heartbeat still stutters every time they see each other, and they see each other almost every day. It’s humiliating, really.
“Good morning, Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan greets, voice as rich and low as ever.
“Morning, Lan Zhan.” Wei Ying gives him a big, beaming grin. “How was your weekend without us?”
Lan Zhan doesn’t quite smile, but there’s laughter in his eyes. “Messy. Jingyi got into—”
“Mr Lan! Mr Lan!” A-Yuan runs back over and attaches himself to Lan Zhan’s leg like a limpet, creasing up his neatly ironed slacks.
“Yes, A-Yuan?” Lan Zhan’s hand instinctively goes to A-Yuan’s head, patting it like he does his own son’s.
“Baba needs a husband, Mr Lan,” A-Yuan says.
Wei Ying’s blood runs cold, his whole life flashing before his eyes. “A-Yuan, no—!” he splutters, trying to get the boy to stop.
But A-Yuan forges ahead without a care, voice filled with glee. “Can you marry my Baba please, Mr Lan? Then me and Jingyi can be real, actual brothers and be together forever! And then— And then we can all live happily ever after!”
“That’s enough, A-Yuan!” Wei Ying exclaims. His body feels like it’s on fire and he can hear the blood rushing in his ears. He crouches down to be at eye level with A-Yuan, despite the shakiness of his legs. “Remember what we said about thinking before we speak?”
“Ummm… that we should think before we speak?” A-Yuan blinks his innocent doe eyes up at him like he hasn’t just ruined Wei Ying’s life.
“Exactly,” Wei Ying sighs. But he doesn’t have it in him to get upset or annoyed with his son. “It’s time for you to head into class. Your teacher’s waiting for you.” He kisses A-Yuan on the forehead. “Bye bye, radish. Love you.”
“Bye bye, Baba! Love you too!” A-Yuan gives him a fat, slobbery kiss right back and then skips off to his classroom, hand in hand with Jingyi.
Wei Ying grits his teeth and slowly stands back up. Time to face the music. “I’m so sorry, Lan Zhan. I promise I didn’t put him up to it.” He doesn’t quite have the courage to meet Lan Zhan’s eyes. “He’s been asking questions about families and moms and dads and I don’t know, maybe I didn’t explain things properly. I’m so sorry, Lan Zhan.”
“No need to apologise,” Lan Zhan tells him.
“No, but there is!” Wei Ying insists. “Tell me how I can make it up to you?”
When there’s no response, Wei Ying braces himself and hesitantly looks up. Only to find that for some strange, inexplicable reason, Lan Zhan is smiling. “Let me take you out to dinner, Wei Ying.”
“What?!”
“A date,” Lan Zhan explains, like it isn’t clear enough already. “To make it up to me.”
“But Lan Zhan, I— You—” It seems that all Wei Ying is capable of today is sputtering and making a fool of himself.
Lan Zhan steps closer, still with that amused glint in his eyes, and gently brushes away a strand of hair that’s blown into Wei Ying’s face. “Don’t you want to live happily ever after, Wei Ying?” he asks.
Wei Ying feels like he’s died and gone straight to heaven.

Fic Finder

1. Hi, I’m looking for a fic in which lan zhan and wei ying are in a relationship. They argue a lot but every argument ends with wei ying jumping in bed with lan zhan and hugging him from behind to resolve it until one day they have a really serious argument and Wei ying doesn’t come to resolve it first. They might have broken up as well, and lan zhan realized wei ying constantly made effort to resolve the arguments first and lan zhan never did.
~*~
2. Hello hello!! I have two requests this time
A) In this fic Wei Ying is the God of the Underworld. Infact everybody is a God here. And Wei Ying has a town or city built in his domain for the souls of the dead and I think the Wens lived there. Also the other Gods considered him a pariah. I remember this one scene where he comes up or goes down the stairs from heaven which leads to the Underworld after a conference with the Gods.
B) I remember only one scene from this fic. It was during the Wen Indoctrination where after Wei Ying was sent to the cell with the Dog he acts dead and Lan Wangji and Jiang Wanyin are heartbroken. But actually Wen Qing just helped Wei Ying's heart rate to slow down to convince Wen Chao of his death. I think Wei Ying wakes up right there after a few minutes or so. @yilinglaobunny

4. Hello, I’m looking for a specific fic that takes place post canon. Basically it’s a short fic where Lan Zhan goes out to travel for something and while he’s gone someone upsets Wei Ying, so to get back at him Wei Ying pretends to have sex super loudly every night. Lan Zhan hears about it and rushes back and hides in the room to find out what’s going on. I think they slept together after but I don’t remember well. I read it a few years ago and all can’t find it since.

5. Hi! There was this Wangxian fic where Lan Zhan got cursed and pushed Wei Ying away because he didn't recognize him and Wei Ying got badly hurt. Wen Qing was alive she made some sort of a healing bubble around Wei Ying for him to heal. I clearly remember she identified Wei Ying as her brother and asked Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen to keep Lan Zhan away from him. Lan Zhan was distraught after the curse wore off. Along with Sizhui and the others. Thank you!

6. Hi, I remember there being a fic but can't seem to find it : where the juniors end up in the past or a different universe where they see JGY and other cultivators in a meeting and one of JL or LY throw a weapon most probably a dagger killing JGY which makes LXC unhappy, hostile and maybe a little shocked but when he makes a move towards the juniors WangXian appear and WY tells/warns him from doing so. I remember I read it on ao3 but don't recall the chapter count apologises for the vague details but this is all that I remember so something with a similar premise or any help would be appreciated.

9. Hiya,
Looking for a modern fic where LWJ is constantly being mean to WWX, whose constantly trying to befriend him. Eventually wwx has a whole breakdown about it, and he mentions how LWJ is an asshole to him for no reason. There’s a scene mentioning wwx baking cookies for him and he thought Lwj threw it out but in reality it is revealed in the end by Lwj himself that he ate it (although he was allergic to it) and WWX says something along the lines of that’s why you missed class that Monday. Turns out LWJ just struggles with communication. I think they are neighbors or roommates I can’t remember. Hopefully someone can help.
Thank you!!

10. I am looking for a canon era (not modern) fic where Lan Wangji was kidnapped as a child and I think he was raised in a brothel. He grows up and curses himself to be hideous so that the men who frequent the brothel don’t try to touch him. Eventually true love breaks the curse (like, WWX loves him regardless of his appearance) and I think Wangji happily reconciles with Xichen.

11. It's been some time since the last FF I've asked but here we go again :'D I'd like to find a fic that had WangXian traveling together and LWJ's back/scars were bothering him and it worsened because of cold weather? Most likely the fic was post canon. There might have been a bath house or a hot spring involved there somewhere
Yes, LWJ knew he was traveling with WWX. No, he didn't get more scars.
did lan zhan not know it was wei ying travelling with him, and did he get more scars as time went on?
~*~
12. Hi, I would love some help locating a fic. I can't really remember a lot of the main plot since it has been a while since I read it. I believe it is a post-canon fic, but Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian had to go back to the Burial Mounds, and Wei Wuxian had to unbury his original body that was buried in the blood pool. I think. I also think that for Wei Wuxian's original body to survive, he had to wear a bracelet of some sort. I don't remember, or maybe I am confused by two different fics.
~*~
13. For the fic finder!! TIA!!
This may be a scene from a long fic but I’m not sure. Wwx is possessed by something more than resentful energy- it’s an ancient demon who wants to destroy the world. Wwx seals himself inside the cold pond cave and puts up a barrier- I guess prepared to stay there forever? Lwj somehow gets in there to stay with him, and has conversations with the demon. The demon is extremely strong, throws him around and hurts him a little. His brother and uncle are pacing outside the barrier demanding he come out. The elders want to execute wwx which is why lwj is in the cave in the first place.
It’s canon setting but I can’t remember the time line- war? No war? Wwx and lwj aren’t together yet though. I remember this fic being pretty good- I’d love to reread it!
FOUND!🔒 Breathing Firestorm by ladyshadowdrake (M, 110k, wangxian, angst, fluff, captivity, creepy WRH, no non-con, dreamsharing, politics, people making the best decisions they can, epic length, mythical creature WWX, canon-typical violence, dark, happy ending)

14. hello!! thank you for all the work you do. i've been trying to find a fic in my bookmarks/ searching for it but i just can't seem to find it unfortunately. i remember it to be an arranged marriage au? where lwj and wwx loved each other very much but upon learning that wei wuxian's tail colour (or species) meant he would not settle, miscommunication happens and just angst. it is a happy ending though, because i think that another person tells lwj that wei changze's tail colour/species meant that wwx would be loyal to him? sorry if this is too broad, thank you!
FOUND? what you have tamed by lianhua_lianzi, Senforza (E, 94k, WangXian, Animal Traits, misunderstandings (not the romcom kind that can be resolved in a 5min convo), Courting Rituals, Pining, Lan family dynamics, Drama, Fluff, Hurt/Comfort, Arranged Marriage, Wangxian break up but get back together, Eventual Happy Ending, vague biological essentialism (animal species have different mating preferences), Canon Typical Alcohol Usage, Implied Mpreg, Unresolved Sexual Tension, unintentional and eventually resolved "gaslighting", Dragon LWJ, Fox WWWX)
~*~
15. Hello! I am searching for a fic I read that I think was multiple short installments in a series on ao3. It was a war au where Wangji had presented as some kind of dragon and he was in charge of the Lan clan. Wuxian was a thief or mercenary. They had met as children and Wangji imprinted on Wuxian, but they parted ways then. They meet again on the battlefield and Wangji pulls Wuxian into his tent and is like “bathe him!” I think Wangji put a silver collar on Wuxian that Wuxian couldn’t remove on his own. There were dom/sub undertones. Any clue?
FOUND!🔒 Have him stripped, bathed, and brought to my tent by KizuKatana (E, 30k, WangXian, Dark LWJ, A/B/O, Huli-Jing WWX, powerplay/powerdynamic, dubcon (due to power dynamics), Overstimulation, Edging, Biting, Scenting, Possessiveness, LWJ Has a Big Dick, Alpha LWJ, Omega WWX, warlord, Emperor LWJ, civilian (sort of) captive (also sort of) WWX, dragon sex magic, Not traditional Chinese emperor history fully alternate reality of immortal creatures)

I'm looking for a story were in the future, in space, Wei Wuxian is kidnapped everyone believes him dead and is used by Jin Guangshan and I think Xue Yang to try to destroy others. I think he has an implant that has prevented him from escaping but he manages to plant bombs and asks Lan Zhan to kill him when he finds him!! Please help!! be well!! @monicaop21

17. Hi, I need some help looking for a fic on ao3 I was SO SURE I had bookmarked, but apparently not. The fic is Jingyi-centric and features a drunk jingyi trying to hit on Jin Ling's uncles at a bar, I'm fairly certain Jingyi is college age and the fic mentions sizhui and wangxian near the end. It was marked as complete, and I think it was a one-shot. Sorry if it's a bit vague, but it's been a while and I'm starting to think I just made it up if it hasn't been deleted. Thank you in advance! @angrymarconi

18. Hey! There’s this thread fic I read a while ago, I believe it’s a “Bikini Armor” au? It’s where Knight!Lwj is meets another fellow knight (Wwx) on the road, but Wwx’s armor is magical? Basically it only visibly covers his privates and part of his chest, the rest is magic. I remember it was a punishment by Madam Yu, and that Lwj finds out when the armor breaks.

19. Hello!
I’m looking for a fix where Wei Ying is gorgeous and coveted by everyone. The junior quartet often have to run interference because he doesn’t realize it. I think an innkeeper’s brother lusts after him too. One of his admirers decides to capture and assault him. Thankfully, Wei Ying is able to use ghosts to overpower him. Eventually, Lan Zhan comes and rescues him. Please help me find this fic! Thank you very much!
FOUND? Cotton Wool by incendir (M, 34k, wangxian, LJY/OMC, JL/LSZ, JC & WWX)

20. So I've lost a fic again, and I need your help once more!
So the premise of the fic was that lwj did enact that fantasy of taking wwx in the library when they were young, only after lwj internally freaks out and runs off to his brother for punishment because "xiongzhang I took someone by force 😢 I'm horrible"
I don't remember how exactly they got there but lxc gets lwj and wwx to talk, intending for wwx to decide how lwj should be punished as the wronged party. Except wwx somehow comes to the conclusion of "Let me f*ck (fuck) Lan zhan! 😠 he took me, so now I should take him!"
Things end happily but that's all I remember. Please help me! (And before anyone asks, no I'm not mixing it up with the Teapot Plot)

Part of the MDZS Reverse Big Bang: 2022
Summary: “A-Ying,” Lan Wangji says quietly, trying to gauge whether the boy is asleep. Even as the boy’s figure tenses and his head peaks out from the rest of his body to look around, he doesn’t stop shaking. His clothes are wet, Lan Wangji can see in the candlelight, clinging to his skin. Winter has not yet passed. The boy must be freezing. “Hello?” A-Ying asks hesitantly, looking around. His eyes are big, but despite some suspicion in their depths, the boy mostly looks curious. “Hello, A-Ying,” Lan Wangji says kindly. “I heard that you prayed to me.” --- a boy, a god and a rebellion against the empire Kay's comments: THIS STORY!! I love it very much and I recently re-read it and it immediately had me hooked once again. This story really has everything. I loved the historical world building with the cultivation sects having fallen a thousand years ago and everyone living under the Wens' tyranny ever since, I loved God!Lan Wangji, who looks out for abandoned children and makes sure Wei Wuxian finds his way to the Jiangs, where he is raised as Jiang Cheng's and Jiang Yanli's personal servant, I absolutely adored Hanguang-Jun hypeman and the very best wing man Lan Jingyi and I loved how Lan Wangji didn't want to admit to himself that he had fallen in love with Wei Wuxian, very in-character for him. Also, the identity shenanigans were very fun! Exerpt: “It is an honour to meet you, Lan- gongzi ,” Wei Wuxian says politely with another bow. “This lowly one is Wei Ying, courtesy Wuxian.” “You have a courtesy name?” Lan Jingyi asks, surprised. Wei Wuxian is used to this surprise and doesn’t do anything other than nod. Lan Jingyi doesn’t pry either—must be the famous Lan restraint to abstain from gossip. “Come with me, I’ll show you to the guest dormitories.” “Many thanks, Lan- gongzi ,” Wei Wuxian replies. Lan Jingyi takes him through the grounds with only a lantern to light the way. Wei Wuxian has missed his chance to explore, but still… “Lan- gongzi , may this one ask you a question?” “Yeah, sure,” Lan Jingyi says. When he shrugs, the lantern he’s carrying gets jostled and the light plays on the shadows around them. “Is it true that the Cloud Recesses have the first temple that was built for Hanguang-jun?” Wei Wuxian asks. “And Zewu-jun?” he adds quickly, in case Lan Jingyi is offended that he’s included only one of them in his question. Lan Jingyi’s face brightens up under the yellow light. “Yeah! Hanguang-jun is the best —and Zewu-jun, of course, but he’s not as cool as Hanguang-jun, although he’s so close. Zewu-jun and Hanguang-jun were the last cultivators to ascend to immortality before the shift into the Wen dynasty when the cultivation clans were wiped out. They were both sons from the direct family line in charge of the Lan Sect—Zewu-jun was the heir and then the sect leader when their father, Qingheng-jun, also ascended to the Heavenly Realm. Zewu-jun is the god who protects leaders and musicians—you may note that his statues always depict him playing the xiao—he’s a martial god regardless, like his younger brother, Hanguang-jun.” Wei Wuxian knows all of this, but he doesn’t interrupt. Lan Jingyi sounds as excited to tell him about them as Wei Wuxian is to hear about Hanguang-jun again.
pov lan wangji, pov wei wuxian, canon divergence, god lan wangji, tgcf, tian guan ci fu fusion, historical, sunshot campaign, secret identity, identity porn, identity reveal, worship, angst with a happy ending, age difference, friends to lovers

Happy Holidays! More of wy as female mxy married to lz please!

Jingyi has gotten roped into tea with Clan Leader Lan and Jin Guangyao by Sizhui, which he grumbles about but doesn't actually mind because Jin Guangyao never gives him that mildly disappointed look that he gives other people when they break the rules. Sizhui says it's because Clan Leader Lan thinks he's funny, which is true. He is funny.
There's a frantic knock at the door and Jin Guangyao frowns but says, "Enter."
The door is shoved open and a pale disciple blurts, "Hanguang Jun has beat Madame Lan and now she's with the healers!"
Everyone freezes and Sizhui's eyes go liquid and huge in a way Jingyi hates.
"Don't lie!" Jingyi snaps.
"I saw it," he says urgently. "He just left her there and she had to be carried away!"
Sizhui doesn't ask to be dismissed or even take the time to bow to his uncle and his uncle's - er, whatever they're supposed to call Jin Guangyao since the betrothal didn't work out. Instead he just bolts.
Since Jingyi isn't the heir to the clan, he gives a hasty bow and a "Sorry" before chasing after his best friend. This is probably cosmic retribution for all the times Sizhui has been the one chasing after him.
There are several disciples stationed outside of the healers. Lan Biyu steps in front of the door. "Young Master Lan, now is not the best time to-"
Sizhui glares. "She's my mother. Move!"
She stares at him, wide eyed, and even Jingyi is taken aback. He's never heard him talk like that, but than again none of them would ever be foolish enough to try and get between Sizhui and Hanguang Jun. It's time for them to learn the same care should be extended for Madame Lan.
Lan Biyu steps aside, head bowed.
Jingyi follows Sizhui inside, terrified at what they might find.
Those fears instantly collapsed. Lady Xuanyu is upright and cheerfully talking to healers with glowing hands. Jingyi flushes bright red and looks to the side, because she's only wearing her inner robe with the shoulders pulled down so healing paste can be applied to several dark bruises, which is perhaps why Lan Biyu was trying to keep them out in the first place.
Her bright attitude doesn't change the fact she's covered in bruises and blood, though.
"Hi boys," she says cheerfully, completely unconcerned with her state of undress. Which is one thing with Sizhui being her step son, but she definitely should kick Jingyi out at least.
"What happened?" Sizhui asks. "Did my father do this?"
She shrugs, winces, and gets glared at by the healers for disrupting their movements. "It was a group effort."
Sizhui has gone dangerously pale. Jingyi demands, "What's that supposed to mean?"
Hanguang Jun wouldn't really beat his wife, would he? He may not like her, but he doesn't even beat misbehaving disciples. He wouldn't hurt his weak wife who can't even defend herself. Right?
"We were sparring," she says. "He really gave me a workout!"
"It's not a spar if you can't fight back!" he insists.
One of the disciples along the wall snorts, sees everyone's eyes turn to her, and her cheeks flush.
Lady Xuanyu gives him a look, but says, "Unfortunately his core is strong enough that the bruises I gave him are probably already healed, but you'll just have to take my word for it."
"Was it really just a spar?" Sizhui asks quietly.
She blinks. "What else would it be?"
He doesn't answer.
"I ordered them to fight me," she continues, "so I can't really complain about your father joining it."
She what?
"Will someone please tell me what happened?" Jingyi asks plaintively.
Lan Fen does.
He stares, not even able to care about the impropriety of seeing her like this. "You're crazy."
"Jingyi!" several people shout while Sizhui finally seems to relax, his lips quirking up at the corners.
Lady Xuanyu erupts into peals of laughter, disrupting the healers work and causing several of them to send him an annoyed glare, since obviously they can't glare at Madame Lan.

Cursed
The last thing Lan Jingyi remembers is pushing Sizhui out of the monster's way - and a wave of blinding, searing pain immediately after. He can still feel the echo of it pounding weakly inside his skull, but it's nothing he can't handle. He's had worse headaches when he was hungover.
Anyway, he's awake and conscious at least - but he's becoming painfully aware of the fact that he's alone in the middle of the forest, with only the night and the few fireflies flitting about as company. Has everyone left already? Did they finish the night hunt without him... and just... left him there?
He feels a pang of hurt at that - he risked his life to save his best friend and then said friend and his seniors simply forgot about him? Alas, he'll have a word with them when he gets back at the inn. They had better not left there already too!
---
"Oh, sorry, young man, but the cultivators that stayed here for the past three days have left already!" the old innkeeper said, with an apologetic look. "Were you with them? I don't think I remember you..." Jingyi's face fell at that, he's just helped the lady carry some very heavy boxes yesterday and scared away some thieves, "...but then again I'm also really old..."
Jingyi forced a smile. "That's okay. Could you please get me a room anyway? I'm really tired, it's been a long night. I'll just catch up to everyone later."
"Of course! Go upstairs and pick your favorite, I'll have some food and drinks delivered to you!"
"Thanks but... I don't have that much money on me right now..."
"Hush now, I'm not just going to let a growing boy starve just for some coins, right? I'll scam some noble out of his cash to make up for the expenses later. Go now, you need to rest!"
---
Jingyi bites into his chicken, and though the meat is tender and flavorful, he finds no pleasure eating it. He feels... confused? Abandoned? Worthless?
He feels expendable.
Why would everyone leave him behind like that? He's really not done anything wrong this time, and even if he broke a rule or two, everyone seemed to find his jokes and comments funny, and it's not like he caused anyone any trouble... he hasn't been in anyone's way either...
Hanguang-Jun never leaves people behind. Much less if they're hurt. Senior Wei is the same, always quick to help others... why not him? Sure, he's strong and independent and capable, but he could have still been gravely injured, or even dead. Did neither of the people he looks up to the most cared to even check if he was still alive?
And Sizhui... they're friends, right? They've always been close, like brothers, they grew up together, been through so much - and yet...
It wasn't like something happened to them either. The old lady said they all left together and seemed fine - so they must have done it deliberately. They meant to leave Jingyi behind. They didn't care. None of them, not one bit.
Jingyi feels his chicken taste saltier than before... maybe it's just his tears.
---
He leaves the inn a few hours later, but can't find it in himself to smile at the old lady on the way out. He's paid her all he had and left her the few trinkets he bought in town the day before as thanks - she could at least hand them over to her grandkids if she didn't like them.
Jingyi always looks forward to returning home from night hunts, seeing all the other juniors and raving about how cool it had all been - but now, Jingyi is in no hurry to arrive to the Cloud Recesses. He feels like he's been kicked in the gut, his emotions so overwhelmingly negative that he worries he might even throw up from them and lose all the food he's managed to eat. He has no money left anymore, and he'll go hungry if he can't get himself together...
He keeps wondering what caused all this. He's been turning every interaction he's had with everyone for the past several days, months, years all around his head - and he can't find anything out of place. Is he that dumb that he didn't pick up on some social cue that told him everyone actually hated him?
But that can't be right - if they hated him, Jingyi would know. They were just indifferent to him, couldn't be bothered to care if he was alive or dead. That somehow hurts more than hatred.
No matter what, he has to know. Why have they all been pretending to tolerate him all this time then? As courtesy?
Jingyi grips his sword hilt tightly. His sadness and betrayal turn to anger, and he draws his blade out, slicing off the thick branches of the trees lining up the forest path. They fall loudly, the wood moaning under the weight.
Some lumberjack is going to have the best day of their life when they visit the forest today.
---
By the time the Cloud Recesses come into view, Jingyi feels a placid form of disgust towards his life and everyone in it. If neither of the people around him give any flying fucks about him, perhaps he is not deserving of it - or of them for that matter.
Why should anyone deserve to be treated as an accessory that's easily dropped at the earliest convenience? Jingyi might not be the brightest or the strongest, but he's not going to allow anyone to treat him like this.
Perhaps he has been wrong idolizing Hanguang-Jun all this time, or defending Senior Wei every time he heard people speaking ill of him. Perhaps those rumors that Jingyi has been so quick to dismiss had some truth to them.
And about Sizhui - well, he can find himself a new best friend, one that he won't leave to die in some random forest after he took a possibly fatal hit in his place. Good luck with that.
He doesn't expect to be greeted or acknowledged by anyone when he enters through the ornate gate of the Cloud Recesses - and he isn't. Nobody cares to look his way - and he swallows back his tears and does the same. Screw them all.
He doesn't expect Sizhui to say anything when he walks in their shared room either - and he doesn't.
But Jingyi does.
"Thanks for fucking checking on me after I took the fall for you."
"I didn't ask you to." Sizhui responds, not taking his eyes off the book he's reading. "You're always like this, reckless just to show off to everyone later."
Jingyi feels himself grow angry, "Sorry for not wanting you to fucking die, I guess."
"Swearing is forbidden. If you do it again, I'll have you punished."
"Like I give a fuck."
---
Hanguang-Jun supervises his punishment, and though Jingyi would have felt embarrassed in other circumstances, he feels a mild sort of annoyance at being around this man that he used to consider his hero.
He writes the rules as always, from his memory. He knows them by heart because, he bitterly remembers, he learned them with Sizhui, and Hanguang-Jun taught them memorization techniques to make it easier.
"Why...?" he finds himself gritting through his teeth. "Why...?!"
Hanguang-Jun lifts his eyes from his work for a few seconds, the same indifference in his gaze as if he looked at some insect passing by his desk. He says nothing, but Jingyi know he won't.
He's not worth the effort.
---
Senior Wei teaches them talisman theory. Jingyi loves this class - used to love it. Everyone does, Senior Wei is a great teacher, he's fun and he shows them all sorts of neat tricks.
Jingyi can't be bothered to pay any attention. He draws his talismans on instinct, the movements ingrained in his mind already - he's been hyperfixated on this for months, he's read all of Senior Wei's notes and even asked for extras. Everyone else is far behind him, even Sizhui.
That knowledge both satisfies and upsets Jingyi.
He's the best student in this class, it's effortless. Senior Wei always uses his work as an example, and they often hold demonstrations together.
None of that happens anymore. Senior Wei doesn't even look his way, not even as everybody gets their characters wrong and Jingyi is the only one whose talisman burns correctly.
When class is over, Jingyi all but runs out the door.
---
He leans against one of the large trees overlooking the bunny field and breathes in and out shakily, tears sliding down his face silently. He's never felt like this before, it's unbearably painful. It's his worst fear come to life, being abandoned, forgotten, a nuisance everyone wants to get rid of.
Not even the bunnies come to greet him, busy playing in the tall grass.
He has nobody to turn to, all the people he thought his friends look at him like he's a particularly bothersome stain on their pristine clothing. Jingyi is long past trying to figure out why.
He curls in on himself and tries to sleep. He'll get punished for it, for slacking off, for sleeping outside, for missing his training, for being alive.
He hugs himself and closes his eyes. Maybe he should have died during that night hunt, it would have hurt less.
---
Jingyi wakes up to the sound of a guqin and flute duet, so beautiful that he wonders if he is being played the music of heavens. Has he died? Has everyone left him to die of exposure in the bunny field? It must have been bothersome getting rid of his body...
But slowly, ever so slowly, the music floats Jingyi back into his body, into his consciousness, and his eyes open, gradually, to a world of decorated ceilings and sandalwood incense.
"Jingyi!" Sizhui shouts, excited and relieved, dropping all decorum to hug his friend over the edge of the bed. Jingyi moves his pupils to his... classmate, equal parts surprised and disgusted.
"Why are you like this?" he asks, cold and disinterested. "Since when do you care?"
Sizhui blinks away unshed tears, a shocked, scared expression on his face. "What do you mean? I've always - I've been here by your bedside all this time! You've been - after you got hit in my place you passed out and -"
"And you left me to die." Jingyi adds, his tone sharp.
"What?! No! Hanguang-Jun carried you all the way to the inn and we've been trying to find a way to break the curse the beast imprinted on you for over a week! We rushed to the Cloud Recesses the moment we realized we couldn't wake you up and Zewu-Jun has been helping us scour the forbidden section of the library for a cure!"
Jingyi listens, but doesn't know whether to believe it or not. Haven't these people... all this time, haven't they treated him like...
"They even - They wrote a new song for you, something to break the curse, like cleansing but much more difficult. Only Hanguang-Jun and Senior Wei can play it, because they need Zewu-Jun to play Cleansing for them after, that's how strong it is!"
What kind of song could that even be...? Why would they risk their lives and their health for...
"They just finished today's session and I've been waiting here to see if you wake up this time. And you did!"
Jingyi blinks a few times, looks around the room, looks at the way Sizhui is almost crying and at how tight he's holding onto Jingyi's hand.
"What... what kind of curse did I get hit with...?"
"One that makes you live your worst fears over and over until you take your life during the illusion... which leads to a powerful qi deviation that... kills you for real..."
"So... everything I just lived through was... not real?"
"No, not at all! We've been so worried whatever you were experiencing would make you break that-"
Sizhui's breath is knocked out of him the moment Jingyi pulls him in an impossibly tight hug. He can't stop his tears from flowing, but this time they're happy, grateful tears that he sheds right into Sizhui's robe.
"It was terrible! All of you, and Hanguang-Jun and Senior Wei acted like I was worthless and an inconvenience and left me and nobody even looked at me, not even the bunnies and-"
The door slides open to reveal Hanguang-Jun and Senior Wei, both visibly worried. "Has Jingyi-"
But their eyes fall on the two hugging friends and immediately rush to check on him. Hanguang-Jun gently takes his wrist to check his meridians, and Senior Wei looks him over carefully before reaching behind Jingyi's head and pulling two needles out of his skin.
"Welcome back among the living!" Senior Wei greets, playful as usual, but his relief is palpable in the soft gaze he sends Jingyi. "How are you feeling?"
"Good." Jingyi smiles, real and bright, "Happy."
"Your qi is balanced, your core filtered out the curse completely." Hanguang-Jun announces, a rare smile on his lips. "I am glad you're alright."
And then Jingyi finds himself embraced by the two, and it's his turn to have his breath knocked out of him.
"Don't ever do this to us again, you little rascal!" Senior Wei chides. "I barely slept at all this past week worrying over my little honorary son!"
"Honorary...son?"
"We consider you part of the family." Hanguang-Jun completes. "If you are alright with that."
A joyful laugh escapes Jingyi, and it's so infectiously happy that everyone joins in.

hello I just saw your tma AU for mdzs and I gotta say it’s the best fucking thing I’ve seen in ages. I love it so much, the character design lives rent free in my head. Absolutely impeccable. Please give the juniors shitty merch for their YouTube channel.
I did one, then i did two and then i did several. You opened the door for the eldritch beings to whisper sweet nothings in my ear and compel me to spend the whole day on these. Hope you're happy with what you have unleashed upon the world. (but seriously, these were so fun to make i could not stop)
I like to think Lan Jingyi would've been in charge of designing the merch, with some helpful suggestions here and there and our boy did not disappoint, although Jin Ling would like to disagree (except for the fairy merch, which is perfect no flaws).

"y'all, no need to be scared, the Yiling Patriarch ain't here" he's standing over there, wearing a mask
I THOUGHT THE LANS WERE BETTER THAN THIS
Luring him over with shitty flute playing
LET GO OF THE COMEDIC RELIEF
His robes are even blowing, just for you
Me leading my next snack away from the bag
Walk faster, goddamn
"hey bbg, it's been a while"
Listen guys, I know you're in love but there's a corpse there
He flew away, like Jesus

Lingyi fic rec list!
Tumblr media
In case anyone floats into the tag and needs this. Personal and without review/explanation because brain too rotted. I just adore this tragically non-canon pairing almost as much as our main guys.
💌 trust my love - panpipe - E - Chapters: 1 - Jin Ling confesses his feelings, and Lan Jingyi has to muddle through the aftermath. (The aftermath is they're in love.)
🕊️ best friends forever - varnes - T - Chapters: 1 - Jin Ling and Jingyi get engaged. Things spiral from there.
⚔️ Can’t Keep Holding My Breath - singingintheshower48 - T - Chapters: 2 -  Two post-canon snippets about Jin Ling and Lan Jingyi enduring growing pains, enduring a war, and somehow finding their way together.
🔥 how can i find the words to say (love has surely shifted my way) - annadream - G - Chapters: 6 -  Jingyi’s steely eyes blazed brighter than the flames surrounding them and in that moment Jin Ling knew he was in love with this loud, obnoxious fool.
📱 the song stuck in my head - poefucker (drbubblegum) - E - Chapters: 7 - Waiting until his third year of college to finish off his last actual gen ed class is absolutely a mistake, and Jingyi proudly admits to it. Public speaking is an unfortunately necessary evil. Or: the juniors have that college experience like the movies show us.
🧞‍♂️ over, sideways, & under - poefucker (drbubblegum) - T - Chapters: 10 -  Jingyi goes nighthunting. It should be that simple. But somehow, after a fateful encounter with a rude, runaway boy and getting trapped in a cave, he's strongarmed into bringing disaster upon the whole of the cultivation world by summoning the infamous Yiling Laozu for unknown purposes. Except now he grants wishes and is actually really funny for an evil spirit. Weird.
🙇‍♂️could someone call a referee - poefucker (drbubblegum) - T - Chapters: 1 -  The one where they go to prom.
📦 all there’s left to do is run - poefucker (drbubblegum) - T - Chapters: 1 -  Lan Jingyi helps his professor move in with his husband. The day doesn't end up like he expected.
🐇 what must it be like to grow up that beautiful? - taetaeloveschimmy - Not Rated - Chapters: 6 -  Jin Ling is in love with Lan Jingyi and he's not exactly thrilled that he's finding this out about himself. Meanwhile, Jingyi is also grappling with his own emotions and complicated history with Jin Ling, leaving both of them unsure of where they stand with each other.
📑 A Guide to Dumbasses Getting Together - Midori_99 - T - Chapters: 5 - Lan Jingyi pines, in poetic melancholy fashion like a true Lan, bemoaning his fate of falling in love with someone as difficult as that Spoilt Mistress Jin. Too bad his love would forever be unrequited and there's no way Jin Ling would ever look at him that way! Lan Sizhui and Ouyang Zizhen would like to disagree. "Mission: Get an overworked Jin Ling to rest and an idiotic Lan Jingyi to stop pining and just confess already, commence!"
📝 Jin Ling’s Heart Is So Big Because It’s Full of Bad Poetry - corduroyserpent - G - Chapters: 1 -  If Jin Ling had learned anything about love in his sixteen years of being alive, it was this: love made people crazy. Sometimes love made you do things like write horrifically bad poetry. It happens!
💝 Oh no- Jiujiu!!! - You_know_yeah - M - Chapters: 1 -  Jin Ling takes a break and fucks off to the Cloud Recesses to "study". Jiang Wanyin follows with the threat of paperwork and leg breaking. All Jin Ling wants to do is kiss his boyfriend and chill :(
🦊 Chasing Gold - albsyant (transtobio) - T - Chapters: 9 -  Jin Ling expected this to be just a regular night hunt, but it didn’t even last a day before disaster struck.
Lan Jingyi, meanwhile, had no idea what to do with the fox that seemed determined to cuddle against him 24/7. What had done this to Jin Ling, and could he please get his prickly cru-friend back?
🌧️ bending the clouds - Jenki - G - Chapters: 1 - Jin Ling's father left him destined to become a leader of the earthbending sect but he didn't leave him his earthbending skills. On the other hand, his mother's waterbending talent was the reason for all of his problems. But he had learned how to isolate himself and hide his secrets and feelings from everyone.Until one day an airbender from Gusu discovered his secret and, with the help of his friends, began to do his best to make Jin Ling feel loved.
👨‍🏫 just because you’re an idiot doesn’t mean you can’t go to college - theinkquiry - T - Chapters: 1 -  “So Lan Jingyi asked you for help to get Professor Wei and Professor Lan together. Does… does he not realize they’re already married?”
“No.” Jin Ling rolled his eyes. “Because he’s an idiot.”

It's a nice evening to send random asks. Please tell me what modern Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling would be like? (what they would wear, where they would be working, some modern interest they might have, etc.) :>
Sorry for the wait, I'm travelling so everything online takes a while;)
I have so many different ideas for all kinds of different modern scenarios XD
Personally, I'm not a great fan of modernAU, because I find them most of the time quite uninventive. I like when the characters from a fantastic world are still fantastic in the modern world - love me some urban fantasy AU:)
In that case, I'd see JC in a scenario similar to the OG story - a last heir of once powerful clan, forced to navigate the political scene of powerful people and protect his people and territory.
He'd work as someone who can leave at a moments notice to deal with the problem. I read one fic where cultivators were still apart of the modern world and worked to control spirits and so on - and I support that idea.
If he absolutely needed to have a job and wasn't a cultivator, it would be some leadership position that required a lot of time investment from him - a director of a family business that almost went under, that he saved from ruin. Something regional and long-standing. Fisheries. Local restaurant/hotel chain. Funeral home.
Oh god, I love the idea of a funeral home xD
He'd have a hard time raising his nephew single-handedly, Jin Ling would spend a lot of time in JC's office/workplace as a little kid, waiting for his uncle to finish work/solve the issue, so he wouldn't have the best contact with hia peers. And if JC's job was something creepy (like a funeral director) the kids at school would be creeped out and bully him. He would have a problem finding friends and grow up to be a standoffish teen. He'd spend time hanging out at the funeral home and in the local park with his dog, play computer games and read books. A general 'lonely teen' stuff.
Now, if that's the world where magic exists to a degree - maybe the Lan are a spirit-whisperers that deal with ghosts and that's why JL finds friends with Sizhui and Jingyi, who are not really creeped out by his family's business.
Say, if there happens to be a Case happening in the area and Lan Wangji appears with the juniors to follow a trail and the trail leads to the body JC has in his funeral house - and he's all "Fuck off, you specifically Huanguang-Jun, I'm done with this life after it took my family away! None of that on my turf! And don't you dare to drag my nephew into this shit!" And Lan Xichen has to step in to convince him to help them while the boys bond...
But I digress.
Jiang Cheng dresses sharply always - as is required of a serious funeral director. He has little patience for the living, but also has a very sympathetic character, and people find him comforting in their hardest moments, even though on the daily he's quite brusque. He'd just externally so well put together! They trust him!
Jin Ling also dresses well - because he was raised by a neurotic mess of a man that was desperate to present his nephew perfectly so that the services wouldn't take him away and give the parenting rights to the Jin. JL likes bright colours and hates getting dirty, and likes to look good (people find him less of a weirdo this way) and will make sure to get the brands together to match. His uncle has a thriving business so the money isn't a problem in his teen years.
They usually eat dinners together - even if JL has to bring a takeout to the funeral house when his uncle works late. They both know how to cook, being single men and all. JC makes sure to take regulat holidays with his nephew, taking him skiing or diving, and so on, because life is short.
In general, they are living a slow, quiet life of a little family that loves each other very much:)

tell us about the phoenix mountain kiss in the aged up jingyi au omg
When Lan Jingyi asked his parents to bring him to the hunt at Baifengshan, he hadn’t been expecting anything but monsters, ghouls, and other dark creatures to ambush him while the hunt was going on.
He definitely wasn’t expecting to run across Jin Zixuan, who was trying his best to woo Maiden Jiang (Jingyi and Jueying fled from the scene of that disaster as soon as they stumbled upon it—it was just too painful to look at) or an irate Madam Jin, who was either a) avoiding her lout of a husband or b) stalking her would-be daughter-in-law through the forest. But more shocking still was the spectacle that greeted Lan Jingyi further into the forest, after he and Yingying left the rest of the Lan delegation and ventured off to hunt on their own.
And it happened because Shufu went hunting on that side of the mountain not long before they arrived; and, more importantly, because Shufu followed Wei Wuxian to the grove of trees he was napping in instead of participating in the hunt.
“Tian ah,” Jueying gasps, as Shufu pins Wei-qianbei’s hands to the branch beneath his head and kisses him as if both their lives depended on it. “I knew it! I knew Zhan-shushu liked him! I’m going to go tell Ba.”
Lan Jingyi groans and covers his eyes before taking shelter in a convenient barberry bush. “Jueying, hush,” he says in despair. “It’s bad enough when we see Baba and Fuqin kissing, and Fuqin never kisses Ba like that. Oh, I can’t look.”
“I can,” his sister exclaims, before wincing at whatever their lawless Zhan-shufu had done to poor Wei-qianbei now. “Ge, that tree limb can’t be comfortable for Senior Wei. Should we say something?”
“Of course we should! Promiscuity is forbidden. Undertaking amorous acts without permission is also forbidden!” Jingyi wails. “What is Shufu doing? Senior Wei doesn’t even know who kissed him!”
It is at that moment—when Jingyi’s voice cracks in distress, as if he were still a boy of fourteen—that their uncle freezes, and looks around in sheer dread at the two small figures hiding behind the bushes.
Jueying waves. Jingyi only groans again, sinking further out of his Shufu’s line of sight, and refuses to move until a large hand grabs him by the back of his coat and hauls him out of the clearing.
“Shufu, let go,” Jueying complains, after Senior Wei is out of earshot. “I need to tell Baba that he was right about you and Wei-qianbei. Are you two going to get married now?”
Shufu sighs and puts her down. “You must not say a word to Brother. Or to anyone else,” he says, blinking his red-rimmed eyes until a tear runs down his cheek. “I have erred, and there is no denying it. When we return to the Cloud Recesses, I will confess my misdeeds and submit to punishment.”
Jingyi pales. "No, Shufu! You can’t. Baba changed the rules about physical discipline, but the punishment for breaking the sixty-seventh precept is still the same!”
“As it should be. I have committed a grave offense against Wei Ying and set a poor example for the two of you. Twenty strikes with the bastinado is the least punishment I am owed, for that.”
His hand twitches toward Bichen, as if he had thought of unsheathing the sword and striking something with it. “We should go back to find Brother and xiongfu, for I—I cannot remain here any longer. Wei Ying and the Jiang delegation are not far away, and I fear that I would lose my composure if Wei Ying were to come across me now.”
“You can go wherever you please, but I’m not going anywhere,” Jueying says testily. “Shufu, stop pulling. Aren’t you going to say something to Wei-qianbei?”
Zhan-shufu looks absolutely miserable. “What could I possibly tell him, now that I have disgraced myself and profaned our friendship? If he knew that I was the one who set upon him, he would—”
“You’re supposed to tell him that you care for him!” Lan Jueying snaps. “What else could you say?”
“Oh, no. Does that mean you only want to kiss him?” Jingyi laments, putting his head in his hands. “Wei-qianbei’s going to be heartbroken, Uncle. I thought you wanted to marry him.”
“I do want to marry him!” Shufu retorts. “I bound his wrist with my mo’e in Lan Yi’s cave, and every day was like a death to me when he went missing after Lotus Pier was attacked—I would bow three times with him this very day if he returned my feelings, but he does not, and I...”
He lets out a shout and draws Bichen, cutting a nearby tree in half before chopping the fallen branches to shreds. Jueying squeals and leaps out of the way, dragging Lan Jingyi along with her; and a few minutes later, Ba and Father wander onto the scene with the baby twins in their arms, staring at Zhan-shufu in astonishment as he brings another innocent tree to the ground.
“A-Zhan,” Baba coughs at last, for want of anything else to say. “Didi. What in heaven’s name are you doing?”
Zhan-shufu drops his sword and falls to his knees, distraught.
“Xiongzhang, I beg of you not to ask. I have committed a grave sin, and when we return home, I—”
“He kissed Wei-qianbei. Without asking,” Jueying interrupts. “Wei-qianbei was blindfolded, and I don’t think he knew that Shufu was the one who kissed him.”
“Oh. Oh, dear,” Baba murmurs, after a brief pause. “Is this true, Wangji?”
Shufu looks as if he might cry. “It is.”
“And, ah...what are the nature of your feelings towards Young Master Wei? Was it only impulse that drove you to kiss him? Or should I look into a marriage arrangement with Yunmeng Jiang?”
“I would ask, if I thought the proposal would be well received.” Some of the color seems to be coming back to Zhan-shufu’s face. “But, Brother—as my zongzhu, I pray you, do not let my transgression be known to the rest of the clan. I will face discipline, as I should, but no word of the reason should reach Wei Ying. If he knew that I was the one who seized him, it would break his heart.”
“I still think that kissing without confessing would break it even more,” Jueying says mutinously, crossing her arms over her chest. “How would you feel if your sworn zhiji kissed you and then ran away without a word? Wei-qianbei even knows what your incense smells like, so he’s sure to find out it was you.”
“Yingying, one moment.” Father narrows his eyes and turns to Zhan-shushu. “So you would ask for Wei Wuxian’s hand in marriage if you thought he might accept you?”
Shufu bows his head. “En, I would. I have already said so.”
Baba lifts baby Yunhua up to his face to hide his smile. “You love him, then? As one would love a spouse and partner in cultivation?”
“Yes. With all my heart.”
Father makes a strange sound that might have been a shriek of laughter.
“Very good, didi,” he chokes. “Now turn around.”
Zhan-shushu, Jueying, and Jingyi all turn around in unison.
Wei-qianbei is standing behind them, gazing at Zhan-shufu with his whole heart shining in his eyes.
“Lan Zhan,” he whispers, trembling from head to foot. “Lan Zhan, you—did you mean it?”
Luckily, Jingyi does not witness what happens between them next, because Fuqin whisks him up onto Baxia and back to the rest of the Lan juniors before Shufu can say another word. Baba follows with Ying-meimei, laughing softly under his breath; and a little while later, they alight next to Shugong, who takes one glance at the look on Baba’s face and throws up his hands in resignation.
“Well?” he sighs, taking little Yunhai from Father’s arms and kissing his button nose. “Out with it, Xichen. What has Wangji done now?”
“Nothing much,” Baba beams. “But when you see him next, I think Zhanzhan will be bringing back a husband.”
Shugong pinches the bridge of his nose.
“He is your brother, after all,” he mutters. “So be it, then. I don’t know what else I expected.”
Baba’s eyes are sparkling. “Mm, quite. Now let’s catch some yaoguai before the sun sets, or we’ll fall behind in the rankings. Come along, A-Yi.”
Jingyi follows with Jueying at his heels, hoping against hope that the next hours of the hunt will not bring more encounters with couples caught up in ill-advised kisses; but he spends those two shichen trailing after his parents, so his hopes are dashed. Again.
