My 2023 on Letterboxd

Big surprises again. It seems Letterboxd has updated their statistic pages for regular users this year by adding, for example, the most watched week (on week 37 I participated HIFF), theme, and nanogenre (always some time for a good old murder mystery).

To be honest, Mr. Miles Jupp is a pure coincidence as my most watched actor. I had a hunch, though, Pedro Almodóvar would be one in direction - Alfred Hitchcock or a Hammer movie legend as the other alternatives. However, it disturbs me that I gave only four stars for Barbie, which is one of the best films of the year. An error that must be fixed immediately.

Best of 2022 Movies #15: Marry Me

Our best half begins proper with this surprisingly enjoyable romcom that unexpectedly has roots in a graphic novel.

But also unlike the similarly named webtoon that is highly recommended and equally compelling.

Jennifer Lopez portrays Kat Valdez a pop star with a rising career and fiancé in Bastian.

On the last leg of their tour where the duo are exchanging vows onstage, news of his infidelity leaks and facing humiliation either way Kat goes through with the wedding.

Only it’s to Owen Wilson’s math teacher Charlie who held up his Besties Marry Me Sign.

Now as a single dad thrust into the position of celebrity, and the pop star facing normal life the unlikely couple navigates life and everything that comes their way.

This was a treat, full of good music an enjoyable twist on the genre and with JLOs unexpected reunion with Ben Affleck (More Later) this does set a good mood for anyone thinking of taking the leap.

Feel good all the way.

Seasons Feelings (Movies Runners Up)

Greetings everybody and welcome back for the 10th anniversary of the annual countdown. We have a new feature showing up this year that will be unveiled Saturday but of course we begin with the first 3 days having runners up for the 3 categories.

Starting with Movies.

Lightyear: The Space Ranger that inspired the in universe toy has a unique origin story with unexpected canon shakers.

The Bad Guys: Society’s Notorious animal stereotypes have a chance at redemption via a like minded civil servant. Even better book series.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore: Jo Rowling returns to her signature creation with more and more real world events influencing the 1930s Wizarding World. Jude Law carries this.

Chip n’ Dale Rescue Rangers: A modern update on Roger Rabbit sees the two gumshoes reunite after the end of their show. Worth it for Ugly Sonic and the Gadget/Zipper Coupling.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story: Biopics get turned on their head thanks to Weird Al and great performances from both Daniel Radcliffe and Evan Rachel Wood.

The fact that Judaism is trending because of both the wave of bomb threats on synagogues and Bradley Cooper's Antisemitism Adventure (his huge fake prosthetic nose, and him basically stealing the story from a Jewish man) is so infuriating and so exhaustingly typical.

The fact that I see Judaism trending on Tumblr and immediately think "oh no. Something Bad is happening to us." We're never trending cause it's fucking good. I never get to be excited, it's just cold dread.

The fact that Antisemitism is getting worse everyday and the only ones who ever talk about it are other Jews. The fact that no one else fucking cares. The only ones who support us are other Jews. Even when gentiles talk about Nazis or white supremacists they don't want to help us. We're just their prop, the canary in the coal mine and the perfect victim.

The fact that everyone's uncomfortable with Jews still being here. Reminding them of things they'd rather forget.

The fact that it'd be easier for them if we were all dead. Then they could tell stories about our people, dressed in offensive caricatures, without us making a fuss.
