IDK but something about Brendan shipping Roy and Jamie and calling them 'the best couple' in an interview all while playing Beard like THAT? It brings character and makes me feel things. He's such a proud inclusive dad. I love this show so much & I'm not ready for this to be the last season ;_;

Also, from an interview with Hannah and Juno, for s2, when Juno said that Jason texted her and told her that he "had something very important/personal' to him and that he'd love for Juno to take a look at it. I can't get over Jason's personality, at least what he seems to be, especially comparing to his ex that cheated on him & the things she herself creates. The differences between them and how it shows!

I think we are absolutely blessed with this show. I love it, despite any possible hiccups. I just love it.

HELLAWEEN -What was the inspiration behind HELLAWEEN/How did it come to be?

In 2014 I had just graduated college and moved across the country for a storyboard internship at a film studio. I had a huge quarter life crisis when the environment clashed with me in every way, which left me questioning if I had made a massive career choice mistake. To help take the edge off I decided I needed to come up with some characters that were as self indulgent as possible. So I asked myself "What if there was Halloween level of a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game?" and "What if My Chemical Romance wrote the soundtrack to Scooby Doo?" and thus, the main cast was born. Originally I didn't have any plans with them, I was just having fun drawing them for inktober and developing their personalities. Once the internship ended and I was able to set my career back in motion with some significantly better studio atmosphere fits for me in California, I started getting more serious about developing a linear story. I spent some time pitching different versions to tv studios and shorts programs. Got some great feedback but no real bites. Fortunately, I had a post blow up that caught the attention of my publisher who reached out to see if I was interested in doing a book instead and I LEAPED at the opportunity! HELLAWEEN is very much inspired by my own teenage years, growing up in the Bay Area, being surrounded by alt and skate cultures in the 2000's. As well as exploring identity, and growing up queer but the words for "how" didn't really exist yet. Plus a deep love for spooky cartoons and stylish anime, of course.

I was supposed to be finishing Boots & Bottles. But instead, a vision came to me.

Season 1 Jamie, at a bar with the team, trying to figure out why Colin, Isaac, Declan, and Roy were hiding behind a wall and spying on someone in the dining room bar.

If that doesn’t make sense, ignore it. It’s all a thin plot to get to Jamie offering to seduce the guy. He’s Declan’s sister’s boyfriend, she’s out of town, he’s at a bar, they think he’s trying to cheat on her.

gonna delete my other interactions with That Person because I don’t think it’s worth arguing with them. and honestly I feel bad for the nice or like. the normal bisexuals because SO. many. of these bisexuals are aggressively annoying about it. every lesbian I know has had a bad run-in with a bisexual.

Because this particular bisexual person also seemed to have a fundamental misunderstanding of how writing fucking works in a way that makes me SO mad.

Because like— you can headcanon that any character with straight hair really has curly hair and straightens it. You can. Word of god can even confirm that’s the case! But that STILL doesn’t matter if canon doesn’t portray them with curly hair. Because even something as seemingly insignificant as curly hair is going to have a domino effect on the character.

If they straighten it, why? Are they insecure? Have they been made fun of? Is it because it’s too much work? Why does Word of God say they have curly hair, but none of their childhood pictures have curly hair? Why isn’t there a hair straightener in their bathroom?

If there’s none of those things— then the character doesn’t have fucking curly hair, now do they? Even if later in the series their hair becomes curly, is there any evidence to support that the hair is naturally curly? Do they have a hair regimen they follow? Do they have curly hairbrushes? Sleep in a bonnet? No? Then they’re not written to have curly hair.

Only thing is, romance is a whole fucking lot more noticeable than with ever or not they give a curly character a bonnet. Romance can make or break a story. And it’s pretty fucking important for the characters to be attracted to each other.

There are SO, so many ways to showcase sexual attraction. Even in kids shows, you can! And it doesn’t have to be with their endgame romance, either! Luz Noceda, a bisexual character written by a bisexual woman, shows attraction to Shirtless Angsty Boy, Edric and Emira and Amity, blatantly. The last of which is her endgame relationship. (Because if a bisexual character is ending up in a relationship, it’s waaay better to have it be a same-sex relationship— considering Lumity is probably why Disney cancelled the show in the first place.)

And like, for shows actually about adults— New Girl. All the men in this are bisexual. Nick Miller is definitely bisexual. It’s not stated explicitly, but he’s explicitly attracted to women and seems to have feelings towards men he is actively in-denial of. Psych — Shawn Spencer’s actor has literally said he played him to be bisexual, and it shows. I’ll believe he’s attracted to women for Abigail alone. I’ll believe he’s attracted to men for everything else.

I’ll believe Sokka is bisexual. His romances with Suki and Yue are believeable enough. Like, I’m not saying nothing can be bisexual— I AM saying that it has to actually be bisexual to be bisexual, though.

Anyway. Zuzu isn’t canonically gay but it makes more sense if he is and for a more compelling story— the fire nation is canonically homophobic, so if he’s gay then that’s another thing for his father to consider wrong about him, since he can’t fall in love with a woman. And Mike? Well, if he were bisexual he’d be a filthy, filthy cheater and I’m personally against media portraying bisexuals as cheaters. As it is, he’s like aggressively gay-coded.

she’s LYING to you! she doesn’t actually have a crush on Hudson! She’s literally supposed to be an unreliable narrator. She calls him the 8th cutest boy in her school and calls Angeline the prettiest girl in the world. She thinks it should be illegal for girls to be too pretty. She went through a year-long phase as a kid of drawing nothing but naked Barbies. She describes Angeline as causing “everyone” to feel a “mild, but pleasant burning sensation.”

Like YES, yes it DOES offend me for people to interpret these characters as bisexual— and you know why? Because comphet is a universal gay experience. Because people STILL cite the comphet things I said as a kid as proof of my “heterosexuality”. There’s so many gay people who have been in straight relationships before, or who have pretended to have straight crushes.

If a character’s only proof of heterosexual attraction is comphet, then they’re not experiencing heterosexual attraction. If the only proof is a forced, stale straight romance that the writers threw in there effortlessly, of which the character is not shown to be into? Then that’s not a character experiencing heterosexual attraction.

I know what you mean about the neither confirming nor denying thing. Like I can see it as not wanting to take away from the Colin moment, and it was definitely left in a way that can be interpreted positively and I think unless they outright say otherwise, a lot of fandom will take it as a yes, he is. That said, that was the perfect time to confirm, just one line, and I will feel cheated if they dont let him acknowledge it. I am slightly more forgiving of actors teasing a character's sexuality if it seems like actually they are 100% behind it (a la Oscar Isaac with Poe, and I do think Phil with Jamie), but I will be more disappointed in the show for teasing it and not going ahead

Yeah, and you know, I’m so done settling and rejoicing over hints when the creators don’t have the backbone to make something canon. So I have a hard time giving them the benefit of the doubt right now.

Maybe they will surprise me positively, but … the more I think about this, the more it upsets me.

The whole situation where everyone on the team looked at him like “We know what you are” was quite unsettling to me—that is not a group of queer people recognising one of their own. That is a group of straight guys singling out one in their middle because he looks/seems gay to them.

Are they stereotyping Jamie because he cares for his appearance? (which is like the only context I can think of, where “I’m flattered” makes sense as a response to me—”They think I’m gay because I’m stylish and hot, so it is a compliment”) Or do they think when Jamie talked about being too “soft” for his dad in season 1, he actually meant “gay”?

The most generous view I can come up with is, that Jamie has dated no one since Keeley and they’re collectively like “He is so hot, and also fun and kind and supportive, him being single makes no sense unless he is gay”. Like, from a fannish perspective I could also go “Haha, after Amsterdam they probably think Roy and Jamie are secretly dating”, but there is like zero proof they might actually think that.

And honestly, as much as I enjoy interpreting every little choice on the show: The average viewer doesn’t do that. The average viewer will look and jump to the first conclusion that makes sense to them, which likely will be stereotyping.

Someone (like Trent) should have called that out.

I could generously interpret the whole exchange as giving a huge hint to casual viewers: “Jamie is perceived as queer, just so you know for future reference 😉”, but still the entire scene doesn’t sit well with me. And they could have accomplished the same result in a way where Jamie actually has agency about this.

Since also, by singling Jamie out, they basically forced him to make a statement, either forcing him to lie or to come out even when he may not be ready for it, which is super shitty behaviour. (So I could also read the “I’m flattered” as him deflecting, like he knows he is bi but doesn’t feel like coming out yet and assumed they clocked him because of his appearance.)

Add to this that Colin basically was forced to come out because of the circumstances and couldn’t actually decide on his own account when and how to come out. (Which is like the opposite of what I wanted)

And we didn’t even get the how, because it was more important to focus on the straight allies 🤡 Like, if the writers didn’t want to take away from Colin’s moment, they could have made it more about Colin? (Yes, he didn't want to be a spokesperson, but it would still have been nice to have him actually say "I am gay" in front of his mates.)

I liked the conversation Roy and Isaac had and think it was necessary (partly for my queer Roy agenda), but instead of giving us this cringeworthy talk by Ted, they could have given Colin more room for his own coming out—and then have Ted reassure him, that they care about him with a story that is about Ted not caring enough about someone who actually was queer and regretting that.

(And yes, I am usually quite forgiving with actors, since they don’t have control over their franchise, but no matter how much I adore Phil, the way he constantly brings up Roy x Jamie as a possibility is going a bit too far at this point if he is only joking.)

Roy is slowly working on his anger issue, and once he get a grip on himself, he’d definitely have a proper conversation with Keeley about their relationship. I can feel it guys, it’s getting near. And of course!! The centric storyline of 3x09, Isaac and Colin woohooooooo. As I said in the post last week, Isaac was going through his acceptance phase, and it’s not gonna be easy for him and Colin. No he is not homophobic, and I don’t understand why some would think Isaac is gonna out Colin. He was angry and frustrated, Colin lied to him for years, he just could not believe it. But even when he could not control his own outrageousness, even when he dared to beat the shit out of that man, even when he felt he was not trustworthy enough for his best friend’s secret, he would never betray Colin like that.

Yeah sometimes I wish somebody, anybody could headbutt those homophobes, racists like what Isaac did on the field. I’m 100% with him on this. Those bastards fucking derserve it. Also, I like the fact that Roy is always kind of a mentor to Isaac, a formal captain to the current captain. Roy calmly guided Isaac through his chaotic state of mind, and it always works like a wonder.

Colin’s not coming out to the entire world but just his teammates and coaches is something so personal to me. As long as there are people truly care about him and his feelings, he doesn’t have to seek any recognition from the rest of the world. I hope we can see him introducing Michael as his boyfriend (and kissing him) in upcoming episodes. Maybe Michael will appear in the locker room after Richmond got an important win of the season?

Yeah and the bros talk at the ending, I laughed out loud like an idiot bc it was so beautiful… Straight dude bonding with gay dude during a FIFA game???? It was hilarious af, and I think I got flashback to when me and my bi friend educating other straight friends about gay terms lolll. Actually I’m straight too but I have consumed too much gay content, too much I think I have an army of devils behind my back.

Oi we have now confirmed Sam is the first vice captain, I wonder who the second one is then. Jamie maybe? That’d explain their dorky interaction across the locker room. It’s so heartwarming when I realise they used to hate each other guts, and now they’re just happily joking around all the time.

Ten books to know me

Rules: 10 (non-ancient) books for people to get to know you better, or that you just really like.

I was tagged by @mathomhouse-e probably about fifteen internet years ago now. But here we are and thank you!

Who knows what "non-ancient" even means, so here's some books that feel important to me and the way I think about the world.

The Wood Wife by Terri Windling This is THE book to know me. It's about art, creation, what it's like to be a creator of art and poetry and it's also the most beautiful invocation of a supernatural world embedded in a real landscape. It made me love the desert. It has a wonderful trickster character, and found family, and stepping into your power as a creator.

Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson If you ask me, this is the foundational cyberpunk novel (I don't get on with Neuromancer). It changed the way I thought about writing, technology and transhumanism and it's so funny. It brings in memes in their original meaning, mythology and cyberpunk. One of the main characters is called Hiro Protagonist. It doesn't devolve into obligatory romance. (Fine and great in its place, but not when it's there in spite of the plot.) I have never liked anything else Stephenson has ever written, but THIS. This is wonderful.

The Last Herald-Mage by Mercedes Lackey Cheating: it's a trilogy. Formative Sad Gay Angst Wizards. This was such a revelation to read in the 90s, as a baby bi. A gay protagonist, actually on-page, not just subtext. Coming out and dealing with homophobia, having sex. Gay protagonist. ALSO the melodrama oh my god Vanyel. I really don't know who'd come out top in a drama-off, him or Dream. But also, Van's struggle with isolating himself to protect his feelings, and let's not forget the cool powers and the magic soulbonding horses. FORMATIVE.

A Land Fit for Heroes by Richard K. Morgan Cheating: it's a trilogy. Matured killer gay wizard-rogue. RINGIL ESKIATH OWNS MY SOUL. He wouldn't want it but too bad. He is my perfect character. He has a bloodthirsty, talking magic sword. It's probably trying to eat his soul. He has a Very Straight warrior best friend and together they have a Very Lesbian crack-addicted elf best friend. They are horrible bastards, and Ringil fucks so much and in all contexts. And the mythology is super cool. Also the politics. This is just perfect for me. (It has so so many content warnings; feel free to hit me up if you're thinking of trying it out.)

The Belgariad by David Eddings Cheating: it's a quintet. Two quintets, if you want to add in the Malloreon. I'm not sure I could go back to it now because the tropes have worn out so much and the gender politics are terrible, but I have read it so many times. This was my first high fantasy epic quest series, and the characters are so dear to me. The way that magic words in this world is refreshingly simple, and I can respect that.

Generation Loss / Cass Neary Series by Elizabeth Hand This is. So fucking good. Cass is The Last Punk Standing, an artist in a fine art street photographer sense, a nihilistic, substance abusing wonderful disaster. This series is part mystery, part grimy supernatural, part literary. It uses Cass's art skills to get her into and out of her problems. It embeds subcultures, eras and the supernatural or just the unsettling so well into the story that it doesn't really feel like an urban fantasy. Again, a lot of content warnings.

The Wicked + The Divine by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie Thiiiiiis graphic novel might still be cheating because there are ten trade books but whatever. It's everything I want a graphic novel to be and the art is fucking gorgeous. It has fandom, music, transformation, gods and monsters and it's just so so fucking cool. What if, every ninety years, twelve humans become gods from existing but not matching pantheons. The deal is they are loved and hated, they're famous for two years, and then they die. It is fantastic.

Machineries of Empire by Yoon Ha Lee Cheating... look I cheat. Whatevs. It's a series. Beautiful twisty space scifi built on a somewhat impenetrable system of math and torture to create the most interesting magic system you ever did see. (You do need a high tolerance for being thrown in the worldbuilding deep end; there will be no infodumps.) There's such wonderful politics and assassins and the best, best Magnificent Bastard ever written, and bodysharing and loyalty and an on-page uniform kink that has to be seen to be believed. It is a wonder and a glory.

Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke One of these things is not the like others, but this book is so important to me. The tenderness, the deep thinking about what it means to be a creator. I have it in multiple bindings because whenever I come across it I can't resist.

Close to the Knives: A Memoir of Disintegration by David Wojnarowicz Also a bit of a departure, but Wojnarowicz is so important to me. His art, his activism, but most of all the way he made journaling part of his arts practice. The queer history here, the utter bullshit genocide of the queer community in the 80s and 90s. But the love and the joy as well. His fierce criticism of the culture he lived in. Just. He's my art hero.

The almost made it but I've run out of space: Watership Down by Richard Adams and The Administration series by Manna Francis.

The Gang Meets Jamie’s Mum Part 2 Electric Boogaloo: Jamie’s Mum Has Something Going On

part one of Jamie’s Mum meeting the gang (or i guess just ted) is here

So Jamie, even though Ted wasn’t actually hitting on his mom, is so traumatized that later he goes off  to moan about this to his boyfriend and girlfriend because Keeley/Roy/Jamie is my ot3

Their relationship is new and Jamie is not planning on coming out to his mom.  He’s the kind of bi where he was down to hook up with a man, isn’t that the way it is for everybody? no? sure you’re not lying about that? interesting.

but mostly he had more opportunity to hook up with women.  He never expected to be in a relationship with one, much less at the same time that he was also in a relationship, so why would he tell his mom when it wasn’t ever going to be relevant. 

And if he never tells her, there’s no risk that she won’t understand, or understand and then be worried about him

Awful side effect is that when his mom stops runs into the trio before a game at the stadium, she unwittingly spills way too many details about Jamies childhood hero worship(read: crush) on Roy because she doesn’t realize it’s incriminating. 

Roy spends a tremendous effort to keep his face neutral, until she turns away and then he shoots a look at Jamie exactly like he just got a truckload of free blackmail material delivered unasked straight to his doorstep

Jamie: This is the worst day

We now cut to Trent Crimm, Independent, is sitting in the stands jotting down notes for his book when abruptly a woman half-falls into the seat next to him

While we’re here, in this Trent is bi, which is very important to me because we need more flamboyant/gender-nonconforming bisexual representation

This plot point is dedicated to the queer experience of coming out to someone only for them to thunk you over the head with an “no everyone does that” like i don’t think you just realized what you just told me about yourself

Trent is like an old hat at this and he’s like hm.  Well I don’t know about any of that.  I’ve never been a woman, I’ve just been bisexual.

Trent is like internally okay instincts were definitely right there, I’m just going to casually talk about being bisexuality

She’s very surprised to find out he had a wife and identified as bisexual.  Like I’m very happy for you but I’m having trouble understanding what the point is for someone like that, like if a woman isn’t going to date another woman or even date anyone because her lingering fears of intimacy make it impossible then what’s the point

Trent is like it’s an important part of me. It’s important to me that I’m able to be myself. 

Jamie’s mum is being respectful but Trent can tell she still doesn’t really get it.

HI FLIP FLOP!!!!!! I'm actually bouncing back from like three days of awful dehydration so this couldn't have come at a better time!!! (i'm drinking water as we speak so no worries) (also literally all of this is pure opinion and conjecture!!!!!)

this is a fantastic question and I'm so glad you asked it!!! the answer is it usually does not lol. I have a personal opinion/theory that there's hair color that's random and hair color that's actually a core pillar of your personality. Percy and Annabeth are actually perfect examples, because they don't act brunette and blonde enough for that to be necessary to the actors playing them so the actors hair color doesn't matter as long as they can portray the characters well (which they do I adore Walker and Leah), and the whole big deal of them "having the wrong hair color" was people associating that hair color with that character instead of it actually having to do with their personalities. But with characters like Lorelai Gilmore and Elle Woods their hair colors aren't just hair color, it's a huge part of their personality, so even if Elle had died her hair brown in legally blonde, it wouldn't have changed her Blonde personality. Personality hair color doesn't have to be natural either, I could never bleach my hair and I will always be Blonde (and I actually have a theory that most if not all of the kids in athena cabin that don't have naturally blonde hair have blonde personalities which is where "most children of athena are blonde" comes from. they have bi monthly bleach and tone nights as a group bonding activity.) So characters like Marcus Baker, Schmidt from new girl, and even Sam and Dean Winchester, their hair color has absolutely nothing to do with their personality, but Max Mayfield, Alex Russo, and Miss Piggy might feel a little off if they were played by someone with a different hair color. Part of that might just be associating that hair color with that character, but I think it's because the latter have personality hair colors instead of random hair colors.

with Tedros (in all fairness I haven't read all the books and I started reading them a long time ago) being blonde is in fact a huge part of his personality. I think Jamie Flatters (the guy who played Tedros) did a really good job at portraying him, and he also has a really similar face/bone structure to the cover art, so it was a great casting choice and the only thing missing was Blonde. it might not have effected his acting but I have a feeling it would have just a teeny tiny bit and that would have been the difference between Blonde tedros and Brunette tedros. Plus I love the pairing of blonde golden retriever tedros x angsty gloomy brunette agatha.

TLDR it's objectively not a huge deal bc Jamie did a great job and I'm sure his hair color wasn't something he had control over, plus if Soman didn't care it's fine, I care a lot because this is a big deal to me and only me and is something I get fired up about (and probably to anyone else emotionally attached to Blonde tedros)

chapter 2 of ‘Unintended’ (friends to lovers, fake engagement, based on @asticou‘s art) is taking shape..... but slowly. i was hoping to post this weekend, but realistically i probably need another week. 

here’s some baz and jamie, talking about all that family magic simon wants to avoid:

I follow her son over towards the tree and, with his permission, lay my hand against it. If Salisbury’s correct about its history, it’s probably one of the focal points for familial magic, but it barely registers for me. A slight tingle against my fingertips, perhaps. I might be imagining it. Presumably if I actually married into this family, on this land, I’d be able to feel more. That’s not the plan, though.

I draw my hand back. “Good for wand-wood, I expect.”

“Oh yeah,” Salisbury says, looking up into the branches. “All the family have cast with oak for years – and, rumour has it, the original scabbard for Simon’s sword was made with oak from that first tree.” 

“There was a scabbard?” I’ve never heard that. Simon’s never said anything. 

Salisbury shrugs. “At this point, who knows? It’s been lost for years.” 

obviously this is a romcom, so this arthur plotline (probably) isn’t important - don’t get excited. in fact, this is how i described this scene in my ‘outline’ for asticou: “baz and jamie talk a bit about [plot business] and baz gives some information about getting together with simon [don't know yet]”. 😅 it does the job of being some business for them to talk about.

You are a great walloped of feelings and I would love to see something that explores platonically the Amsterdam bike training scene- like from Jamie, being able to be the person who gets to teach and help someone else, and from Roy, actually letting his guard down and letting someone help him with something.

Obviously you do not have to if you aren’t feeling it. I also realize that is an incredibly specific ask, so really anything that marches along the platonically walloped feelings path would be amazing. If its for a gift fic

Jamie can’t help but remember the first time he was in Amsterdam. His father saying it was time he taught him “how to be a man, Jamie.” And he tries to think about the second time he was there instead, with Mummy, and the both of them doing their best to fill him up with different knowledge instead.

The entire time he’s running with Roy, that’s what he’s doing. Spouting every fact he can think of, letting what they pass inspire another one. And then another one. All he has to do is run and talk about anything distracting.

It doesn’t occur to him that Roy might ask how he knows so much. That he has to answer or Roy will pick at him until he does. For the longest time the only armor he had was being a prick. He’d done so much to remove it for the people he cares about, for his team, for his own benefit.

But here in Amsterdam, where he had both the worst and best trips of his life? The armor comes up easily. He lies, like a prick, and he says it as pricky as he can, and the worrying thing is that Roy doesn’t say anything about it. He doesn’t see through Jamie at all. He doesn’t see Jamie.

Then he realizes that means Roy is distracted. By what, he doesn’t know but he should have clocked that immediately when Roy nabbed him from the team. Roy’s favorite way to work off frustration is by vaguely torturing him.

And Jamie knows that, and he doesn’t mind really. He’s had a lifetime of coaches barking at him. This way, with Roy, has felt like it was actually for a purpose. Most of the time it was making him a better player. But if the purpose is also making Roy feel better? He actively wants that.

Unfortunately, with Prick Mode activated, he doesn’t think twice about howling with laughter at Roy’s admission. Then he hears about his grandfather, and remembers Roy was the only other one who really sacrificed something important at the ghost cleansing, so the guilt sets in.

But now he knows what to do with guilt. He knows how to make amends. And more than that he wants to, of his own accord, rather than feeling like his hand is forced. He wants to make it right with Roy, right for Roy, and show him that it was safe for him to trust Jamie with that pocket of vulnerability.

He decides the best thing would be to honor the memory of Roy’s grandad. If Roy thought not learning was disrespectful, than they could feed two birds with one scone. He’ll teach Roy how to ride this bike, say thanks to a man he’d never met but who’d helped make his best friend into the man he is today, and apologize to the man himself. Okay, so sue him, they’re feeding three birds with the one scone.

Except…except it’s four. Because he finds that teaching Roy to ride a bike does more to distract him from the memories than learning did last time he was here. It pulls his focus and his energy. And it actually makes even more sense when he stops to think about it. Because that’s what Roy has done ever since he started training Jamie. Took everything that made Jamie who he was and directed it right where it needed to go.

Which is why, after he’d successfully avoided it all night, he found himself telling Roy the truth about Amsterdam. Roy told Jamie about his grandfather, so Jamie told Roy about his dad, and Jamie taught Roy to ride a bike…and Roy taught him that it was okay to admit that something bad had happened to him. That even if he doesn’t have the language for it yet…he doesn’t have to hide that it happened.

They were just two friends, riding bikes in the dark, telling each other secrets the way they should have both been able to do when they were actual children. Telling each other things that worried them even though they were unrelated to football. They found a magic castle windmill, and got punchy from staying up past their bedtimes, and though they would deny it only a month later; let down their guards enough to become best friends.
