I think it is good that peter yearsley’s audiobook collection extends mostly to ghost stories, holmes stories, the works of e. nesbit, and some miscellaneous poetry and histories, because if he had done readings of adventure-novels too, I would unfortunately be completely In The Soup.

Another post cause I’ve been seeing some stuff on my dash.
Okay so first of all it’s fine if a media fades and you move on to other things. That’s fair. You objectively have less content to work with when it’s not airing/uploading. Go on to greener pastures and thrive.
However, it is also like, perfectly fine if you keep being enthusiastic about a thing that is on hiatus or over. Heaven help us, there are still about five fics uploaded for SMPEarth a month, and half the time I’m one of them. I just wrote recursive fic (fic inspired by other fic) of something published in 2021, which is about the time that I joined the fandom in the first place. I was cruising collections the other day and the K/S Star Trek fans just ran a prompt fest that got like 50 fics submitted to it. I’m subscribed to someone who uploads fic from the Witcher books (not the show, the books) about once a week. Repeatedly in exchanges I’m in, the most popular fandom is Biggles, which is an adventure pilot series that came out in 1930s (I understand it’s very gay and whumpy).
If you still want to talk about or create about a fandom that is not airing rn, I promise you are not going to annoy people. Anyone who thinks you’re cringe isn’t worth worrying about. Even if it’s just one guy deliriously happy in your notes, you will find your audience. You don’t have to do Fandom as work where you have to stay current, you can just follow your bliss, even if that means you just draw one more ctommy, and just one more ctommy, and one last ctommy, and just one more ctommy.
So yeah like I’m giving you a thumbs up if you leave, find something new that scratches that itch, but also if you keep making things, even for something long past, I promise nobody worth caring about will think you’re weird.

July recs
It might be the very last day of the month, but that means I'm not late! Five Sandman recs under the cut, and one each for Batman, Murderbot, and Biggles.
Tumblr media
SANDMAN
What Manner Of Creature by @ro-moray (Dream/Hob)
Hob's had a number of theories about his strange friend over the years. They are all, of course, completely incorrect.
Great through-the-years look at Hob and Dream, with humor and understanding.
to dream you was remembering by @cuubism (Dream/Hob)
Hob understands now both why Dream created this nightmare, as well as why doing so was an unconscious rather than conscious act, and the thought hurts more than the nightmare itself. After all, Hob has had four hundred years to grapple with his own loss. He's not sure that, even after so much time, Dream has grappled with his.
Short scene with Hob and Dream and a baby nightmare, but it packs a hell of an emotional punch.
The Dread and Fear of Kings by @maybemalapert (gen)
"I'm afraid I'm not much into charcoal sketches," Hob said, taking in the crude rendition of himself and his Stranger that he'd last seen in the hands of Johanna Constantine. "Now, oil paintings on the other hand--" "Mr. Gadlen," the man interrupted. "I have gone to great lengths to find you and to confirm that it was indeed you who met with Dream of the Endless in 1889 and every century prior. Let me assure you, I do not make a habit of kidnapping people on a whim."
Deliciously whumpy fishbowl rescue with Burgess being a real bastard (what else). Happy ending, but mind the tags.
Yours for the Taking by @signiorbenedickofpadua (Calliope/Dream/Hob)
When Hob spots a sad woman in white through a window of a famous author's house, he gets a bad feeling. Further investigation reveals that she's in need of rescue, but what Hob isn't prepared for is the fact that the woman he sets out to save turns out to be a literal Greek goddess, the ex-wife of the Stranger he keeps waiting for, and a rather lovely person to boot.
SUCH a good and satisfying read, with a skillful build to the three-way romance.
more sky comes and more days by Chrome/@catalists (Calliope/Dream/Hob)
In the aftermath of her imprisonment, Calliope is determined to learn to trust humans again, so she finds a roommate and settles in the mortal world. Meanwhile, her former husband has been on another quest that ended in grief, and he seeks her out for solace. What could possibly go wrong? or, “Hey, Zed,” Hob answered. “Something the matter?” “Yes,” she said. “Calliope’s ex showed up and he’s fucking terrifying.”
Really enjoyed this way of them all colliding - funny and bittersweet at turns - and the resolution.
MISC
Birdwatch11 by @smilebackwards (Batman, gen)
Tim hadn’t actually meant to start a popular Batwatch blog. He hadn’t meant to start a blog at all honestly but by the time he turned eleven he’d accumulated hundreds of pictures of Batman and Robin on his Nikon DSLR and it had just seemed inefficient to go through the trouble of printing them and storing them in a box under his bed when BlogSphere had a perfectly adequate platform.
Short, funny, sweet story about someone trying to claim credit for Tim's pre-Robin photo habit, and his A+++ response.
in recognition by isilee (Murderbot, gen)
Volescu's first communication from SecUnit, once it had pieced together its brain again and settled into Preservation a little more, appeared in his feed inbox right as he took a sip of his morning coffee.
*dies laughing* In which Murderbot recognizes Volescu for having the sense to retire. Cute look at the friendship of the whole survey group.
Biggles in Sarawak by @philomytha (Biggles/von Stalhein)
Biggles is asked to help the CIA transport a Soviet spy they've captured in a remote jungle location. The trouble is, the spy is Erich von Stalhein. And that's only the first problem.
Excellent adventure jam-packed with tropes from hurt/comfort to teaming-up-with-your-nemesis to sex pollen (with said nemesis, of course).

July and August Reading
So this summer was not a great time for reading or for anything else. Except crafts. Last week I did so much crochet I bruised my fingertip.
Recent: A Short History of the World According to Sheep by Sally Coulthard started good but got more irritating over time, and I ended up skimming the last few chapters.
Very much liked Patchwork: A World Tour; I still really want a general history (specifically one starting before 1700), but this was very diverse and very pretty.
I read the first of Jewelle Gomez's Gilda Stories, which was very well done, but the author's note was more evidence that debates over moral storytelling are not limited to modern tumblr.
In August I finished another Biggles book, and now the next time I feel like Boy's Own Adventures I can get on to the resolution of Von Stalhein's arc and widen my fanfiction options.
And then I deliberately picked up Circle of Magic: Sandry's Book for comfort reading, which it provided. Also more craft books and more RWRB fanfic.
Current: Just finished Agatha Christie's The Moving Finger in audiobook for more comfort reading. I remember liking but also being annoyed by a paranormal romance about how great small towns are, and it probably says something very clear about me that Horrible Things Happening in Nice Small Towns are, conversely, very comfortable.
Terry Pratchett's Interesting Times, because I wanted to reread a Discworld book and I knew I'd only read this one once ... but unfortunately there was a reason for that. Which of course is going to be true of anyone who wrote that many books over that much time.
Sarah Caudwell's The Shortest Way to Hades, which is great. One of the nice things about this series is that I can think things like, "Ah, what an interesting choice to refer to Euripides' Helen in this particular narrative. What might that imply for the main mystery plot?" (I'm less than halfway in and don't know if I'm guessing right yet.)
My current purse book is The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman, which will probably go slowly but which I am enjoying very much when I remember it's there.
And a facsimile copy of William Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience.
Future: The library for some reason hasn't got any of K. J. Charles' recent releases.
I have another Christie audiobook lined up. In print the Caudwell will probably take me a while yet. But it's occurred to me that autumn is coming up, and this year I want to actually read The Haunting of Hill House.

2, 8, 13?
2. what movie do you wish you could unwatch?
Biggles: Adventures in Time, obviously.
I JEST, I jest. This is a difficult one, mainly because although I've undoubtedly seen many films I'd like to unwatch I now can't remember a single one of them. I'm going to show my age and go with something like The Sixth Sense, because that twist is properly jaw-dropping when you don't know it's coming, and it's never quite the same experience watching it again...
8. what's your comfort film?
I've probably got a few of these, but if I had to pick one it's probably The Princess Bride. I've loved it since I was a kid, and it never ever gets old even though at this point I can probably quote most of it.
In very close second place would be The Mummy, and the first Pirates of the Caribbean.
13. do you have a favourite film in another language?
I'm not sure if this one strictly counts, as it's in French, German and English, but I absolutely adore Joyeux Noel, and I'm counting it.
Excellent question choices, thank you! <3

Watch "Pet Shop Boys - Two Divided by Zero" on YouTube
youtube
Every time I think, "This is the weirdest goddamn video I've ever seen," a weirder one comes along. For a second I thought someone had made this with cuts from Biggles: Adventures in Time.
CN: Biggles murders the Pet Shop Boys like they're fuckin' Bonnie and Clyde. Destruction of a rather nice vintage car.

hello! i've been lurking in the biggles ao3 tag for a few months now (because of your glacier rescue fic actually!). and after some time i decided to check out the canon material. so by now i've read probably half? of the books containing evs (most of the ones where he is prominently featured, though none from the WWII time and i won't ever read those if i can help it) and also the short story where marie gets introduced.
but!! now that i've given in to fate and have started writing some biggles fic myself, i've noticed a glaring lack in my bigglesducation when it comes to the other characters (even biggles himself sometimes)! especially bertie is hard for me to get a grip on (also bc i'm not english, so his way of talking is often a big ??? for me lmao). could you maybe recommend some of the books where you feel like the others get their time to shine and their personality comes out noticably? (redirecting me to others' lists on forums or sth is also okay ofc!!)
(also as a bonus some of the more fantastical/horror-ish ones? i seem to remember someone mentioning a giant squid??)
(also also please do not get too excited at the prospect of new biggles fic, i tend to go overboard with my ideas and so most of them never get to see the light of day or even leave their status of wip)
thank you and no worries if you don't want to answer this! (and sorry for the long ask!)
Hello hello! Welcome to the Biggles fandom! ❤️ Whether or not you post anything, I hope you have fun!
@philomytha has some great introductory resources with recommended Biggles books, including a bunch of von Stalhein books and also plenty of ones without him; you can find those posts here:
Biggles for Beginners
More good Biggles books
So I highly recommend checking out those posts, which contain a mix of the EvS books (mostly in the first post) and a variety of other recommended books from the rest of the series, with capsule descriptions - it's a great resource and has guided most of my reading in the series so far; I'm only now starting to branch out into books not mentioned there!
Bertie is hard to write; he's the hardest for me out of the main set (including EvS), and it doesn't help that he's only in about half the series since he first shows up in WWII. Actually, the first story in the collection Spitfire Parade introduces him and is worth reading just for that! (I think you get a really good sense of his personality there.)
As for the introductions of the other main characters, Algy is introduced along with Biggles's early (and uncomplimentary!) impressions of him in a couple of the shorts in The Camels Are Coming, and then Ginger first appears in Biggles and the Black Peril (fortunately not at all ... what it sounds like), which is also just a really fun book on its own with lots of fun action and some nice Biggles-and-Algy interaction as well.
A few of the books that I particularly liked that don't have EvS in them:
Biggles and the Black Peril, mentioned above
Biggles Fails to Return, which is largely focused on Biggles's team trying to rescue him, so you get a good look at their individual personalities and team dynamic without Biggles around. (Although Biggles gets some good bits as well!)
Biggles Takes it Rough (also not what it sounds like), which has some good Bertie moments and is generally a fun book.
Biggles in the Terai is another one that might be good for writing Bertie; it involves Biggles and Bertie working together to look for a missing Algy.
Biggles Sweeps the Desert (WWII era, but no EvS) has good team interactions and a lot of action.
Biggles in the Baltic is, regrettably, one of the WWII books with an evil EvS, so that's a caveat, but otherwise I love it a lot; there's an exciting adventure plot, a secret island base, and a lot of team dynamics.
As for the more over-the-top books with giant squid and so forth, you can find recs for those at Philomytha's posts as well! So far I don't think any of those have turned out to be ones I really loved, which doesn't mean I might not hit one later on that's a favorite, but she's got a few of those listed, and some of the more real-world-based books can also have occasional appearances by Menacing Batshittery as well. (Just FYI, there's also a general tendency for the more batshit books to have more racism as well, since they tend to take place in out-of-the-way corners of the world that Johns doesn't write as well as places closer to home. So that's a caveat!)
That being said, one thing I do genuinely, unironically love about these books is that they lean into their respective premises as hard as they possibly can. If there's a castle, it WILL have secret passages and ancient suits of armor and everything else you'd want a castle to have. If pirates are mentioned, there will be a wrecked ship full of treasure. If they're going to be around Antarctica, someone will, at some point, have to land an airplane on an iceberg. (That's in Biggles's Second Case, btw - which also is a really enjoyable read!)
So basically I hope you have fun, and feel free to drop back into my askbox if you have more questions or just want to report back on some of the books!

The wind whistles softly through the abandoned house, as you search for anything that might be useful. An hour of searching shows that anyone that scavenged here before has taken anything that could be useful. Most of the furniture is gone; probably taken for firewood. All you find is a dusty VHS tape left in the corner of the attic. Its paper label says: Biggles, Adventures in Time

Talk Week: Tip Of The World Tuesday
Tell us something interesting about the world your character lives in. Go deep into your world lore/building
Red lives in a historical fiction setting, the World War Two and immediately post-war periods, so the 'lore' is mainly that of true history. However, there are a few twists.
As some parts of the universe are fanwork, the vibe of those sections changes a little to match the media it is meant to fit into. The Biggles bits are more 'boys own' type scenes, whilst Foyle's War is serious with a touch of humour. The Great Escape section is exactly as serious as the source material - as is the Hogan's Heroes section.
Original sections have their own variety of flavours. Test-Pilot Work, the largest at over 72,000 words, draws dually on the reality of working as a test pilot in the late 1940s and also some more adventure type stories, whilst Red's Devils, documenting his time in a PoW camp for the six or so months until the end of the war, brings some very hard-hitting and occasionally dark elements of reality alongside Hogan's Heroes escapades like tunneling and underground radio.
One section, a crossover with another of my original universes about the Dutch resistance, has elements of magical realism, and hints to the timeline of that universe, which is an AU where WW2 lasted longer. This project really does have all sorts!
Something interesting? What isn't interesting? :)
