Bindrune Commission: Loki, Sigyn, Narfi and Vali
For this one I wanted to represent the family in a happy moment instead of in the tragedy they are so often associated with. I used the runes that make their names to make a family photo/portrait during a fishing trip. If yer interested in getting a bindrune from me, check out my Commissions tab on Ko-Fi or my Et$y shop~

If you’re looking for custom resin bindrune keychains or want a reading, I have a Ko-Fi and take commissions! Kofi: https://ko-fi.com/grimakarsidottir
I haven’t listed all the colors I can do just yet, but I have around 30 shades in various colors.
I’m trying to save up money for vendor fees and a tent so that I can share my craft in-person!

Like many of you, I saw the images of neonazis threatening a queer event in Columbus recently. I noticed they were using bindrunes on their shirts, and one man had one on his face. This is something relevant to my interests because I’m transmasc, disabled, and also a Germanic pagan and runeworker. I could write an essay about how I feel about Nazis appropriating runes, but that’s not the point.
The first images I saw, it was difficult to see the exact runes they were using. But recently I got a clearer photo. The runes on the T-shirts are berkano, laguz (twice), and tiwaz.
Tumblr media
So, breakdown of how rune magic works. Each of the runes has a meaning, sometimes multiple, usually context-dependent and influenced by nearby runes. You place the runes against each other, they theoretically do magic as a result, and no I don’t care whether you believe that works or not. When you use multiple runes together like that, it’s a bindrune. I like to think of each individual rune as a word and the bindrune as the sentence. You write them on paper, you thus announce your intent, that’s basically how it works. The way I do it, the biggest rune or the rune the others branch out from is the most important and the focus of everything. It’s not complicated nor do you need Germanic/Scandinavian ancestry to do it. Anyone can use runes. All you need is to know the meanings and you get better with time.
I learned to make bindrunes after a friend, who has been a runeworker for around twenty years, sent me a drawing of one for protection. She explained to me what each part did and how to draw it, and it worked. That was enough information for me to begin constructing my own, and occasionally I make extra money doing commissions. I’ve been doing this about three years now.
Coming back from that tangent to the Nazis and their bindrune T-shirts. The construction of these bindrunes felt off to me. There’s more than one way to draw a bindrune meaning the same thing, sure, but I was immediately struck with the suspicion that whoever drew these wasn’t actually a practitioner, was a dabbler at most. It was not well constructed, but I had a bad feeling about the intent behind them, because if it was meant to be purely symbolic, it would probably just be a sowilo, an othala, or a tiwaz.
I sent the photo to my runeworker friend. I asked what she thought they were doing. Her immediate response was they were being aggressive, which I also figured from the use of red, the prominent tiwaz. But she agreed that it was an odd choice of runes, that whoever did it was “an amateur graphic designer” and not a runeworker.
We figured that Nazis probably use a corrupted set of rune meanings, but googling “Nazi speficic understanding of runes” isn’t exactly helpful. The Anti-Defamation League website was somewhat helpful with this, as several runes are listed in their section on neonazi symbols.
Berkano is a rune that I usually see in its contexts where it’s associated with femininity. But it has other associations, like new life and rebirth. That’s the context that made the most sense on a shirt worn by a man in the alt-right movement.
Laguz basically means water, sometimes metaphorically, to refer to things that flow. They use it twice, perhaps for emphasis.
Tiwaz is associated with the god Tyr. It often symbolizes victory in battle. I use a bindrune with tiwaz and algiz on my personal defense knife. Nazis are big on this rune becuse, well, they tend to be focused on very specific aspects of Germanic paganism and history.
So what the full bindrune would symbolize is the rebirth of their movement, it growing and violently eradicating their enemies. It is a threat, but it is also intended to be a spell. I am both personally offended at bindrunes being used this way, and relieved that their side has shitty occultists who by all appearances used Google to pick out the runes they wanted and then randomly threw them together. But it makes sense that they do. I work with runes due to a genuine interest in the occult, folklore, and Germanic paganism, whereas for Nazis their interests in those things are only secondary to their interest in white supremacy.
So rune friend and I have been having fun discussing a counter to this, something that could be drawn on a slip of paper or worn around the neck for people likely to encounter groups like this. We came up with a few different designs.
The runes listed here are mannaz (human), ehwaz (camraderie/teamwork), laguz (flow), wunjo (victory/happiness), algiz (protection), jera (passage of time/harvests) and dagaz (beginnings). It’s basically a rune that helps people stand up to fascists.

If anyone wants to use this, you have your pick of designs. And as a reminder: Nazi punks fuck off. https://youtu.be/kTs_Q4hEqmA

Was making this #adornment detail for the bottom of a #commissioned #dreamcraft #talisman and it occurred to this hanging on its own is very powerful and beautiful. What do you all think? Should I make #bindrune #talisman pieces like this? Also a bit of price research:how much would you spend on such a item ready-made and how much when you could choseb the runes incorporated? Apologies for the crappy phone picture, just on the fly today, am too busy to upload from the pro camera. #viking #elderfuthark #nordic #heathen #pagan #ashwood #ogham #hemp #wicca #seiðr #völva #divination #protection #runes https://www.instagram.com/p/CDqy7QGhR0w/?igshid=75vj9s76cc6t

Deity Bindrune
I received a question from @nattpyske on how I made my Nehalennia bindrune, so I figured I’d make a quick post about my process.
Tumblr media
[ Nehalennia Candle Shrine side view with Nehalennia bindrune ]
First really quick: a bindrune is a symbol which combines different runes, in this case using the elder futhark. They can be used for magical purposes, combining their different properties towards a certain outcome. In this case, I use them as a symbol for a specific deity, combining their different areas of rule into one powerful symbol.
So step one is brainstorming. I usually sit with a crappy notebook and just jot down all the things I want to incorporate into the bindrune, or the domains of the deity I wish to make this bindrune for. This is a messy process and can take several days or weeks, depending on how smoothly this goes. Cernunnos’ bindrune came together super quick, only a few days, for example, while Baduhenna was a lot more nebulous, taking several weeks to get right.
Tumblr media
[Burnable Spellboxes with deity bindrunes. Left: Baduhenna. Middle: Nehalennia. Right: Cernunnos.]
For the Nehalennia I settled on four runes of the elder futhark. Raidho: for travel, in this case across the North Sea. Laguz: for water, since Nehalennia is the Goddess of the North Sea. Fehu: for material wealth, most of her followers were hardworking merchants, and Nehalennia is a Goddess of prosperity as well, so I associate Her with reaping the fruits of your (hard) labour. Gebo: for gifts, relationships, and exchange. She is the Goddess of the harvest, and keeps the ships safe on their travels, but it comes with a price – and exchange – in the shape of an altar stone commissioned for Her. She gives, so much, but she does expect things in return. A relationship of equals.
After I made my choice it’s as simple, and as complicated, of trying out different combinations until one feels and looks right. For some runes this is very quick and can happen in one doodling session, like the Cernunnos rune or the Nehalennia rune. For others it takes multiple sessions to figure out something that works, like with Baduhenna.
Tumblr media
[Deity Bindrune concept page in my bullet journal. The top two-thirds are for Baduhenna, which eventually became something different entirely. The bottom one-third is for Nehalennia, the circled bindrune being the final one.]
A parting note: for some it is important to not include the reverse or mirrored versions of the rune, since their meaning is different and often opposite of the upright one. For bindrunes, I do not have this belief, because I am using the meaning of the upright runes to built something new, while still holding the original meanings. They lose their individuality (a bit) to join into a conjoined and new symbol, with new meaning. But, this is for every individual practitioner to decide.

I recently discovered your blog and I love it! Your art work is wonderful! I was wondering if you’d ever create a sigil to invoke a feeling of mystery with the ocean, ie Cthulu like?
Runes Wos and Qen could be made into a bindrune, or Dal'urk, since in a technical sense I work with sigil-like forms, not actual sigils.
I may be opening up commissions for designs in the future though, should that be a desired path.

There we go. Today was about taking a moment of time for a personal project, specificially doing the yearly rebuild of the bracer I normally wear almost all the time. Turned out fairly decent.
