Edges Laid, Plot Twists Served

Adina Green walked into Niveus Academy like she owned it. Edges laid, braids fresh, and a perfectly curated outfit that said yes, I’m that girl, even if you pretend not to see me. But behind the polished look and top of the class energy was a Black girl navigating secrets, pressure, and a system that was never built for her. And when the truth started to crack through the surface? She didn’t just unravel; she came for blood. 🩸😏

This book gave me everything. The tension, the mystery, the layered characters, the vibe. It definitely made me want to rewatch Gossip Girl and finally finish bingeing Pretty Little Liars. As a girl who was always drawn to those kinds of messy, drama filled teen shows; but also always clocking the lack of Black and Brown faces; Ace of Spades felt like someone finally wrote the story I wanted to see on screen. It definitely scratched that itch and then some.

Devon’s storyline, in particular, really got to me. I loved him too! Watching him navigate queerness, poverty, and survival in a space that constantly tried to erase or exploit him? I wanted to hug him 🥺😭. He carried so much and still found a way to stay true to himself. His vulnerability, talent, and fear all felt hella raw. I was rooting for him deadass, and I felt it every time he took a hit.

Reading this right after Blood At The Root was chef’s kiss. Both books gave me that perfect combo of dark academia, queerness, and social commentary without sacrificing character depth. They go hand in hand, like sibling books from different genres but speaking the same truth. I’m here for it. 👏🏾👏🏾 If Blood At The Root fed my fantasy-loving soul, Ace of Spades satisfied my inner messy teen girl who wanted drama and make it memorable. Dark skin, dark secrets, no apologies. ✊🏾

Lastly? The Author’s Note at the end?? Everything. Faridah really spoke to the realities of being Black in elite spaces, and it just made me love the book even more. I cannot wait to read more from her. Big fan energy right here 🖤

First, let's talk about Alexa. Fuckin. Valentine.👏🏾👏🏾

She’s sharp-tongued, bloodthirsty, and on the verge of exploding. From the first page, she’s already halfway feral. Hungry. Determined. The kind of girl who’s stared into the abyss and said, Make me famous, I don’t care the cost.

This was my first horror novella and I tore through it in one sitting. Just 98 pages of gore, glitter, and full throttle delusion. TikTok recommended it based on Camp Damascus, and honestly? A perfect match. But where Camp Damascus whispers its horror, this one screams. 😱😱

The best part? Alexa gave me serious Maxine Minx energy. 🧨

If you’ve seen X or MaXXXine, you already know what kind of obsession I’m talking about. That dangerous, unstoppable hunger for fame. That “I don’t care who I have to kill, I will be remembered forever” mindset. Both Alexa and Maxine are femme, fierce, and deep in their villain girl era; spinning in blood and rhinestones, and fucking daring you to look away.

“The thing told me to do it, and I listened because it was right. We all rot eventually. We all fall apart. Why should I feel bad about trading blood for glory?” 😈😏

Damnnnn. That line from this read lived rent free in my head for hours after finishing!

The horror in this novella is fast paced; it slashes, splatters, a rollercoaster ride with sharp turns, but so does the commentary. It’s about fame. Power. The desperation to be famous is front and center . Alexa’s spiraling monologues feel like a mirror held up to every girl who’s ever been underestimated, overlooked, or told to be quiet, especially as an Afro Latina. She doesn’t just want the spotlight. She wants to set the stage on fire and watch it burn to the ground.

“Fame is a fire, and I want to burn with it until there’s nothing left.”

Say less Alexa!

This book reads like a slasher where the final girl is also the monster, and you’re still rooting for her. It’s brutal. It’s glittery. It’s unhinged in the most fun way. And Alexa’s voice? Loud, clear, hella unforgettable. I could hear her laughing at the edge of every page.

“I am famous. Alexa Valentine will be famous after this.”

And honestly? I believe her. 😭

This book gave me:

📚 Bookstores Are My Happy Place

East Bay Booksellers Visit

After running errands and adulting (ugh, yes, even the DMV), my boyfriend and I decided to take a little detour through the neighborhood and as a treat we went to one of our favorite independent bookstores in Oakland: East Bay Booksellers!

You can literally see the joy on my face in this picture. 💕✨ Let’s go inside!

I love looking through the newest and bestselling section whenever I roll into a bookstore.

Am I the only one who prefers paperbacks over hardcovers? The jackets on hardcovers be fighting me every time? Not Disabled hand friendly at all 😂😂 #TeamPaperbacks all-day!

Also, nothing hits quite like the smell of a bookstore. Especially that crisp scent of brand-new reads 😍I always take my time wandering through each section. It’s a guilty pleasure spotting authors I recognize and titles I’ve seen floating around Bookstagram or Libby.

One thing I hella love and appreciate about East Bay Booksellers is how accessible it is. Wide aisles, clear signage, and no awkward furniture blocking the path. A win!! 🫶🏾👏🏾

You already know I made my way to the Disability Studies section to scope out what’s new. 🖤

✨ And yes, I picked up a new book! 😍😍 “Yolk” by Mary H.K. Choi, and I’m so excited to finally read it!

The bold yellow cover instantly caught my eye (yellow is my favorite color!), and I’ve been meaning to read this one for a while. It’s about two Korean American sisters reconnecting through illness and messy family dynamics, aka one of my favorite troupes.

Also? The book design is just fire!🔥I love when publishers go all out on the details.

Bonus? Bay Area Book Festival is this weekend (!!) in downtown Berkeley and they’re having a Bookworm Block Party on Sunday. 😍

When Your Whole Bloodline Might Be the Villain

Wowwww. Tender Beasts was a fast-paced trip full of layered moments, unsettling family drama, and hella details that only clicked in the final chapters. I’m so glad I stuck with it because that ending?? Worth it. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

And shoutout to Liselle Sambury for including an epilogue because I was 100% that reader screaming, “Wait, but what happens to the Behres?” I needed closure, and she delivered. This might be the first book I’ve read where an entire family is possessed by a demonic entity… and I am not gonna lie; I was eating it up. 🍽️

What really impressed me was how many layers this story managed to hold without ever feeling forced: race, queerness, social class, academic pressure, family trauma, journal entries, and spooky dark academia vibes. All woven in, all intentional. Some of the characters (Sunny, I’m definitely looking at you) drove me up the wall, but even when they were doing hella, they still mattered. Every person in this messy, possessed-ass family had a role to play.

Also? I love that the author is Trinidadian! 👏🏾🇹🇹I didn’t know what to expect going in, but this book showed me I need to read more from her ASAP. And yes, I read the physical book and listened to the audiobook from my library. Peak reading experience. 🙂‍↔️
