sometimes the oversimplified queer readings of classic texts by gen Z gays frustrate me so much because you know they are not actually looking to make meaningful literary discourse at all. some of the essays and meta I read by students and lit enthusiasts here are really good, but most of them are just like "haha ophelia is hamlet's beard and getting cuckolded 🤪🤪🤪" or "omg this female character is a LESBIAN because she shows dissatisfaction with the oppressive Victorian institution of marriage!!" the worst of this has happened to Greek classic texts and Greek mythology/history in general, esp The Iliad: aka The Madeline Miller syndrome of thinking you're revolutionizing literature by saying "achilles was kind of a bisexual icon!" without reflecting AT ALL on Homeric misogyny and how it affected the portrayal of his female characters, including Helen, Briseis and- yes. yes! - the goddess Hera. Everything needs to be made Gay™ not in a way of queer art or nuanced discussions of gender and sexuality, not in the way, say, Carmen Maria Machado reads Carmilla or Kalynn Bayron reads Jekyll and Hyde, but in a uwu quirky-banter-found-family nauseatingly YA manner.

Don Knotts (The Incredible Mr. Limpet, The Ghost and Mr Chicken, The Reluctant Astronaut)—Just look at him. He’s just a lil scrungly guy. Also he started entertaining as a ventriloquist, and there’s nothing scrunglier than a ventriloquist. In all seriousness, Don Knotts’ career is singularly unique. His speaking voice was iconic, and he used it to his advantage and played it up – see also the included YouTube link to his small role in No Time for Sergeants [link]. He not only played second fiddle comedic character roles, but also played leading comedic character roles. He didn’t need a sidekick for his movies but he could *be* the sidekick if needed. That’s key to Scrungly Little Guy™ behavior, in my opinion. Knotts undoubtedly influenced many comedians and sitcom characters in both his lifelong film and TV career – and I do mean lifelong, as his final role was in 2006, the year he passed away! In the 70s, he became a frequently used actor in live action Disney comedy films for kids like The Apple Dumpling Gang and appeared in many children’s programs. Knotts was said to be one of the nicest guys in Hollywood, which is important for Scrungly Little Guy™ lore.
Conrad Veidt (The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, The Man Who Laughs)— oh my god look at him in Caligari. I specifically said that he's from this because him as Cesare is just. MMMMM. he's so wet and sad and scrungly. and little. he's like a kitten left alone in a dark alley except he's also killed people (not his fault). something wrong with him (Cesare). as for Conrad himself. oh my god look at him... them big ole eyes and the walk of some fucking thing creature
This is round 5 of the contest. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. If you’re confused on what a scrungle is, or any of the rules of the contest, click here.
[additional submitted propaganda + scrungly videos under the cut]
Don Knotts:
TBH, I was first introduced to Don knotts in things like three's company, the og Scooby-Doo cartoons, and later on that Disney chicken little movie. He's probably most remembered from his time on the Andy griffith show. But just look at him! Don't you just wanna put him situations?
When you say scrungly his face is just what immediately pops into my head
Don Knotts plays in most if not all of his filmography someone who is kinda dull-witted, afraid of his own shadow, or kind of cowardly. He is the scrungliest of scrungly people!
youtube
Conrad Veidt:
youtube
I mean just look at him. The wet cat energy. The ghostly eyes. He did the monster mash before anybody. Where would we be today without him, he even has one (1) song on spotify. I regularly forget he's dead and wonder what his next movie will be. He slays in any role. The Ultimate Skrunkle.
He's the ultimate scrungly to me, the basis for many of our scrungly guys today. he's so skinny and pale and he wears so much eye makeup
He was THE bisexual goth tumblr sexyman of early film. Seriously the old timey Tumblrinas would send him fanmail about wanting him to choke them. He inspired the designs for the Joker and Jafar, and was nicknamed the “Demon of the Silver Screen” for his horror roles. His first wife divorced him for crossdressing. Hitler sent him hate mail for speaking out about antisemitism. He really loved his wife and told the Germans to go fuck themselves when they threatened his job if he didn’t divorce her for being Jewish. Just look at me and tell me this guy isn’t scrungly he’s like a personification of the emo kid from Horton hears a who

Help me, I’m a sapphic who is free falling into K-Pop girlies groups
Ryujin is 100% fruity
I'll enable your spiral with some actual Sapphic Kpop songs/MVs currently in my playlist:
Touch - Anda (imagine this MV being your first introduction to Kpop anything, that was me 2015)
Obvious Story - Maman (an openly lesbian idol? yes please)
Shutdown - Moonbyul ft. Seori (two Sapphic women duet about having sex with each other) ((and no, I'm not joking))
Basically every song sung by Moonbyul (she's a lesbian)
Derre, Let's Be Honest, & Kazino - BIBI Naked (she's my absolute favorite idol period, she's not afraid to put the Bi in BIBI)
Not Friends - LOONA (every single former LOONA member, group, sub-unit, soloist, whatever, have too many gay songs to properly list istg)
Heart Attack - Chuu (fomer LOONAs, Chuu and Yves never said it wasn't gay, so it's gay)
New - Yves (former LOONA, current FRUIT)
Je Ne Sais Quoi - Odd Eye Circle (even more former LOONAs talking about gay sex for The Brand™)
Oh My God - GIDLE (English lyrics ON)
She's Mine - Joohee (I couldn't find a version with Eng lyrics, but you get the idea from the title and the little Eng in the song)
Siren, Punk Hot, & Oasis - 1CHU (idk what these two girls got going on, but they have the gayest MVs with the most lesbian ass lyrics, so I say they're for the Sapphics)
Sad Pain - Suran (don't let the title fool you, it's very happy and showcases a girl who is blind falling in love with a girl who is deaf)
Untouchable - Everglow (them lyrics okay)
I'm Your Girl? - KHAN (imo South Korea immediately nuked their career after ONE SONG bc their Sapphic energy was too strong)
Lovers in the Night & Dive With You- Seori (if Seori ain't a friend of Dorothy, she's at least pen pals)
Love is Love - Jiae (openly bisexual icon ftw)
One More Day - Sistar (helping your secret gf kill her abusive bf, then setting his ass on fire is obvious Sapphic behavior)
Abracadabra - Brown Eyed Girls (since we're on the topic of girl kills her abusive bf to run off with her gf)
Wish Tree - Red Velvet (unrequited wlw love)
Monster - Irene & Suelgi (you got your delulus about Ryujin, I got my own about Irene)
Navillera - Gfriend (confirmed wlw activity)
Good Bye - Wheein (confirmed wlw break up activity by a Dorothy BFF icon)
Curve - Sunmi (Curve? Curve of what, Sunmi? CURVE OF WHAT?!)
Bad - So!YoON! (CLICK 👏🏻 THAT 👏🏻 FUCKING 👏🏻 LINK 👏🏻)

NEW POST!
The Disturbing and Hypocritical World of Tradwives
Tradwives. Who are they? Where did they come from? What do they want?
To answer these questions and more, we’re going to dive deep into the bowels of anti-feminist history. Starting with a woman named Phyllis Schlafly.
She was the absolute fucking worst.
Schlafly dedicated her entire life and career to thwarting the causes of feminism. She advocated for women to give up careers and their places in society in favor of staying home, having babies, and nurturing their husbands and homes. She successfully campaigned against the Equal Rights Amendment (which is still not ratified as the law of the land to this day), headed a grassroots movement to convince women that equal rights were not only unattainable but undesirable, stood firmly against gay rights, and loved the idea of a white supremacist theocracy even more than she loved the sound of her own goddamn voice. Schlafly was staunchly anti-abortion, anti-contraception, anti-divorce, and anti-fun in all its forms.
But the infuriating legacy of Schlafly lives on. For while she was yammering on about uppity women knowing their place, this anti-feminist Babadook was decidedly not in her supposed place.
(Actually, this is an insult to the Babadook, who The Kids™ tell me is a bisexual icon and therefore someone to be celebrated and not denigrated. My apologies, dear sweet Babadook. It won’t happen again.)
Did we just help you out? Say thanks on Patreon!

Sword gays showdown, round 1 of bracket one
Propaganda:
For Sayaka Miki:
my favourite scene is the one where Sayaka turns off all her pain receptors to battle the shadow witch, uncaring of the damage dealt to her body, because what is a body but a decaying vessel you must eventually abandon anyway? that was very depression of her <3 Also there’s that one time (in the rebellion movie) where Sayaka stabs herself on her own sword to release the witch that dwells within her. and then she immediately gets up to fight back to back with her girlfriend. that moment lives rent free in my head. Sayaka is so depression and I love her for it:)
SHES SO GAY ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY SHE FLIRTS W THE MAIN CHARACTER HER NARRATIVE FOIL IS ANOTHER GIRL W TBE OPPOSITE COLOR SCHEME THEYRE RED BLUE LESBIAN MOMENT YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT ELSE ??? SHE COMES TO THIS FALSE REALITY LITERALLY JUST TO SEE HER GIRLFRIEND ALIVE THEY LIVE TOGETHER AND THERES A WHOLE OUTRO SEQUENCE JUST W THE TWO OF THEM SHE STUDIED THE GAY BLADE I STG also she uses a sword 🗡️ love u sayaka
For Wei Wuxian:
His signature weapon is a flute (which he can use to summon demons and ghosts) but he also studied the blade just like most characters in this setting. He's a bisexual ADHD icon who died twice and still came back to get his man.

anyways, putting the shit music and lestat abuse apologism and sidelining characters of colour aside, the other huge issue with iwtv season 3 will be the orientalism. because if there's something I know it's that even productions purporting to care about Representation™ and Diversity™ because they cast actors of colour, those productions will still very happily be orientalist and islamophobic as fuck dehumanising Arab cultures for their lowkey white supremacist art and most everyone will eat that shit up. if you don't believe me, I'll point you to the fact that Dune 2 was one of the biggest films of the last 12 months and pop culture unironically calls the 1990s The Mummy movies iconic bisexual movies and clout it non-stop. like iwtv season 3 is on some level gonna be lestat fucking an Egyptian goddess because a white woman wrote that a backstory that was like "this Egyptian queen's blood is why this white man is as powerful and violent as he is" and a lot of you don't see a problem with that!!! And guess what!!! There's no amount of ethnically accurate casting that will fix that level of racism, misogyny and orientalism. Like that's Edward Said's Orientalism 101 ie. that the middle east, Africa and Asia exists for white men to conquer and fuck to empower themselves. But of course no one really cares because people in the West have basically been conditioned not to at this point. Why would you care. They'll just repackage the racism as vaguely feminist or as part of the horror and people will be like, "it's actually really cool and exciting that this Egyptian woman is a sexy bloodthirsty maniac who's the root of all evil and then gets brutally murdered!!!!!" anyway.

Professor Layton queer hcs and thoughts
Since it's pride month, and I've been seeing pride shit for the series (at least some so far lol), I might as well throw my headcanons thus far. I know I did pride icons for like three of these babies so far but shhh more details-
Hershel Layton
Demibisexual
He's known since his teen years. Randall used to tease him a little about how he takes a million years to fall for someone
(Really it just takes like a year of bonding with the person to gain any attraction to them if it happens at all)
"Oh, yes I need to bond with someone first before I could like any man or woman." "Ohhhh so you're demi!" "…I'm what now?" "Demi! Needing a strong emotional bond before you could fall for someone!" "Wait, I thought that was normal. You mean to tell me you're not kidding about finding someone you don't know that well attractive or just asking them out on a date?"
Luke Triton
Bisexual
Intersex (partial androgen insensitivity syndrome to be more specific)
He's had comments from other people about how feminine he looks, but for the most part he's never really gotten any shit. With what he did get shit for, though, whether it's directly or indirectly… let's just say his parents (especially Clark) had a few words with said people
Clark and Brenda are extremely supportive of him. They love him as he is and they wouldn't change a single thing, they just want him to be happy and healthy
Puberty is partially Hell™ for him at first because of gynecomastia (or essentially, man boobs)
Randall Ascot
Genderqueer (she/her and he/him pronouns)
Omnisexual lesbian
Refers to himself as a lesbian because of being with Angela (who's an ally, she loves her regardless of how she identifies)
She was actually nervous coming out to Angela, Henry, and Hershel. One confident man's weakness: coming out as a genderqueer lesbian to her closest friends and lover whose opinions matter very much. Tells Angela (intentional), Hershel (accidental), and Henry (intentional) in that order
Stansbury is supportive, but because Randall is EXTREMELY annoying about it, they're just like "oh God damnit here we go again" with him. Basically Fuck You in Particular™ with her lmao
Angela helps Randall with trying different styles to see what works for him and what doesn't. Even if there were some clothes she didn't like, both of them have a lot of fun with it
Flora Reinhold
Lesbian. I dunno why I keep thinking that with her whenever I look at Flora, I'm not at the original trilogy yet, but. Lesbian
Doesn't realize she could like girls at first. She was never told that she didn't have to like guys if she didn't feel it, so when she realized guys could like guys and girls could like girls? …Oh. O h. Flora be having some Realizations™
Luke sometimes teases Flora about having a crush on a girl (whether she actually does or not) and it's all light-hearted fun
If I think of more I'll either reblog the post or make a sequel one, or any changes to what's been said here
#Professor Layton#Hershel Layton#Luke Triton#Randall Ascot#Flora Reinhold#Lil's Talks#Headcanons#I would've had something for Emmy but. Brain no compute#Can't think of how I see her yet igddigdvj#I didn't have much for Flora either and I'm trying for her ugsgdgsi#I didn't want the post to just be Luke Randall and Hershel man usfsguiisg

Hi hi!! It's unfair of me to ask you to actually write the full essay on the rwrb red room kiss scene, but I saw your tags and am very interested in at least what the main thesis would be, if you feel like sharing!! No worries if not 😊 Have a good night/day/whatever time it is where you are!
The last few weeks have been, well. They've Been™ and I'm going to use this wonderful ask to dust off my overthinking tag and write a meta post on this movie, these boys, and then hope more than three people care what I have to say.
The Red Room kiss scene is Iconic™ and Important™ and in this essay I (really) will discuss agency, framing, and why it always had to be Alex to be the one to make the move.
While book!Alex takes book!Henry to the Red Room, here he's waiting. Bundle of nervous energy. He doesn't know what to do with himself, how to hold himself, how to present himself when Henry turns up. He's backlit in this (which is a theatre technique, I see you Matthew) but it also adds to the drama and tension of the scene.
The (in)famous painting of Hamilton, about to bear witness to things.
We jump cut between Alex trying to find... something. Here he is realising his shirt has come slightly undone and he wants to try and be somewhat presentable. At least for the moment. But it speaks to Alex's physicality in this scene because he is shifting and moving so much that his clothing is shifting. There's also an interpretation that this suit represents the formality of the situation - the Prime Minister's dinner, at which he (the First Son) and the boy he wants to kiss (the actual Prinec) are supposed to be front and centre and the picture of formality.
He's coming undone in this moment because he's the First Son and he's waiting for the Prince, but he's also Alex and he's waiting for Henry.
Ah, yes. The casual lean against the wall. Fancy seeing you here, your Royal Highness, what do you think of the menu? But there's grounding here too. When you're spiralling focusing on a physical point of contact between you and and something can help ground you.
It's also a defensive stance in a way. You shall not pass, I'm not moving. Alex is claiming space and territory and he's controlling it.
"How dare you fucking kiss me, run away, ghost me, then walk into the White House like nothing changed." This is closed off, defensive, protective - probably why it's the quickest of the poses to be dismissed. He's got his back against the wall like he's scared or ready to come out fighting. And, in a way, both of those are true.
Book!Alex is mid-crisis on his bisexuality and while he logically knows he is very much into Henry, he's not gotten to the point of turning theory into reality.
Movie!Alex is more chill about being into guys, but this attraction to Henry is confusing him. He hates the guy. He wants to punch him in the mouth. With his mouth.
(What? That's literally book canon: and if he weren’t already hell-bent on destroying Henry’s infuriating idiot face with his mouth right now, he would consider doing it with his fist.)
Casual lean against the table, less staged and jarring than the extended arm against the wall.
But then Henry walks in and Alex stands to attention and he is... rapt. He is calm and composed and he is focused. We're back to the back-lit position which helps frame him with a near-halo effect.
And you can see that he is relaxed. There's a slight drop in the jaw, his shoulders are sloped and rounded. Because none on what he was trying to convey before matters. Henry is here.
"Look" he starts with - he's expecting a fight. He's expecting Alex to go off on one for the kiss, for the liberty taken. Even if Alex is willing to forget that it ever happened, take Henry's secret to the grave, Henry gets one thing right in this.
"my behaviour was appalling"
Because it was. Look, Hen, I love you and I'm with Alex in the feeling that I will go to war for you to see you happy and safe. But you did kinda kiss him without consent (harsh reading) and you did ghost him without apology (soft reading) and for a boy raised in the Royal Household that... well... it's pretty much top items on the Very Bad Behaviour list. He did not act with decorum or dignity, he did not act in the way that his status and position demands.
(That's OK, Hen. Because the boy under the linden tree wasn't the Prince. It's OK to not be him, and Alex is going to spend the rest of his life loudly loving the man, not the prince.)
"Shut up, stop talking." // “Shut up, shut all the way up, oh my God,” Alex hisses
Because even though both versions of Alex said he wanted to talk to Henry, in the moment that's the last thing he wants to do. And actions speak louder than words, right?
Why it had to be Alex
Henry needed to make the first move, that New Year's kiss, because there needed to be something to make Alex realise that this thing he's feeling is very much reciprocated, and that Henry wants it too. If Alex had kissed Henry for the first time on New Year's Eve/Day then it would have been too much of a leap. Alex, at whatever stage of his bisexual journey, has no clear idea of Henry's orientation at that party. It's only with retrospective viewing that he realises that Henry was low-key flirting, and that the sharing of these deeply personal moments wasn't just a "two bros in a hot tub" thing.
So Henry had to kiss Alex first but then he had to run because there was no way that the mostly-closeted, private Prince could accept that a) he fucking kissed a boy, b) said boy is the one he's been dreaming of since Rio/Melbourne, and c) the boy kinda?? kissed him back?? Henry will have been having a low-grade anxiety attack all through January (and trying to reclaim some control with the date he went on in the book).
In this moment, Alex knows all the pieces. He's played this logic game to its conclusion and he knows all the facts. 1) Henry is gay. 2) Henry is into him. 3) He's into Henry. That last fact is something Henry isn't fully aware of (or at least can't bring himself to believe it to be true) and so it has to be Alex.
He doesn't want Henry to say something that would get in the way of this, doesn't want to hear any kind of pre-prepared speech of "yeah, we're better off as friends" that always happens when the couple get too close to getting together too early in the run time. Alex is full on shutting that down, shutting Henry up, and he gives as good as he got.
"Wait a minute" // Henry’s too shocked to respond, mouth falling open slackly in a way that’s more surprise than invitation, and for a horrified moment Alex thinks he calculated all wrong, but then Henry’s kissing him back, and it’s everything.
And this time it's both of them. Framed between Hamilton and the books. The American political trailblazer and the literary. In the space between? There's our boys.
Alex's hand is on the wall again and he's controlling the space but Henry is very much in it. He's protective but in a different way.
In one frantic motion, Alex knocks the candelabra off the table next to them and pushes Henry onto it so he’s sitting with his back against—Alex looks up and almost breaks into deranged laughter—a portrait of Alexander Hamilton. Henry’s legs fall open readily and Alex crowds up between them, wrenching Henry’s head back into another searing kiss. They’re really moving now, wrecking each other’s suits, Henry’s lip caught between Alex’s teeth, the portrait’s frame rattling against the wall when Henry’s head drops back and bangs into it. Alex is at his throat, and he’s somewhere between angry and giddy, caught up in the space between years of sworn hate and something else he’s begun to suspect has always been there. It’s white-hot, and he feels crazy with it, lit up from the inside. Henry gives as good as he gets, hooking one knee around the back of Alex’s thigh for leverage, delicate royal sensibilities nowhere in the cut of his teeth. Alex has been learning for a while Henry isn’t what he thought, but it’s something else to feel it this close up, the quiet burn in him, the pent-up person under the perfect veneer who tries and pushes and wants. He drops a hand onto Henry’s thigh, feeling the electrical pulse there, the smooth fabric over hard muscle. He pushes up, up, and Henry’s hand slams down over his, digging his nails in.
The sensibility of the suits is on its way out, they're not the First Son and the Prince. And Alex is taking the lead.
Agency
Henry is somewhat passive in this - although he is fully engaged - but it's Alex who set this in motion. Pun intended. Alex who pushed him against the wall. Alex who pushed him up onto the table and hiked his leg up around his hip, Alex who is driving in. Because Alex needs Henry to know that third fact. The one he's worked out, the one that Henry is just catching up with. This isn't payback, it's not some prank. Alex Wants™.
There's a scene I'm writing in my current FirstPrince WiP in which Alex and Henry have a charged moment. And Henry wants to act on it but those princely sensibilities get in the way and he can't let himself be led into doing something that could be used against him. If Henry made all the moves then the accusation of him taking advantage, of the inherant imbalance that comes with status and titles and positions of power. So in the scene, and here, Alex takes the lead. There's no way anyone could accuse Henry of forcing Alex into doing this.
(Good luck getting Alex to do ANYTHING he doesn't want to.)
So Alex gives and Henry takes and he gets the memo very quickly.
Fact number three. Alex wants this too.
Then Movie!Amy walks in on them (which IMO is way funnier than Book!Amy hissing through a crack in the door) and these idiots try to act like they weren't redefining International Relations a second ago. Alex is by the painting, Henry is by the books. They've gone back to their sides and they're playing at being interested in what they find there. But they're not, it's all for show, someone who gives a passing glance at this point sees this part of them, this side of them The First Son and the Prince: the politician and the literary.
They're both backlit, they're in line even if it doesn't look like it, Alex is no longer on Henry's right, and they're both trying to act like the people that others could see them as.
But we - and they - know better. 1) Henry is gay. 2) Henry is into Alex. 3) Alex is into Henry.
4) Everyone is on the same page now.
(Also I know Casey talked about seeing the Red Room on a White House tour and so that's why they included a scene in that room in their book, but I cannot ignore the fact that red = love and passion and danger and fire [the counter to the water motif] and it's a warm colour designed to excite.)

When I was an edgy teenager, I was listening to a lot of punk, specifically grunge and riot grrrl (make fun of me later). While I liked how the music sounded (LOL, I was fourteen/fifteen and had no taste), the messaging was patronizing, even if I was the target demographic, technically. (I'm a woman with a lot of "checked boxes"). All of these artists were saying outwardly that "women, POC, and The Homos™ are totally oppressed and if you hate them then we hate you." Grunge/riot grrrl/punk, despite their desire to "make a difference," really didn't, I don't think, unless they wanted to make social relationships worse. It was also a genre full of white people who were drowning in white guilt and actively admitted as such - I blame feminism.
In their quest to sound non-bigoted, this group of woke/leftist heterosexual white men and bisexual white women were calling all minority/"underrepresented" people helpless victims and advocating for violence and degeneracy (which worked). Yes, non-homosexuals with white saviour complexes, you totally know what you're talking about. (There were a couple homos in there too, unfortunately, and they loved that these people were giving into their victimhood mindset - I still think we're better than this shit).
Oh, and the best part? If any woman, POC, or homosexual called them out on their bullshit, they called them handmaidens, Uncle Toms, or under the heterosexual's boot, including actively harassing them. They called them names, said they were unwelcome, and pushed them out of spaces they claimed to have made for minorities. Really sounds sexist, racist, and homophobic if you ask me.
The bigoted leftists who claim to be "fighting bigotry" is not new. The rhetoric people think is new and from the 2010s has been around for a long time. These genres came out in the 1980s and 1990s, but it feels like even back then they were lying about how bad things were. I've seen multiple videos, including street interviews, home videos, etc, from the time and socially, it was much better than things are today. People of any sex, race, or sexuality were friends and outwardly said they cared for each other. "I love my white brothers," "I don't care if she's a woman as long as she loves rock 'n roll like I do," "Straight people in my community don't give a shit about lesbians/gays, even when we're in drag/cross-dressing." (paraphrased)
I've also noticed that the metal bands that were grouped in with grunge/riot grrrl/punk purely by association (rather than by genres overlapping) had not only the best music, but the band members actually had brains and didn't fall for the victimhood bullshit, even if they weren't explicitly conservative. I still listen to Layne Staley and Kat Bjelland because of this, and metal has so many conservative (or at least non-leftist) artists. That's where it's at.
The "grunge/punk icons" who are still alive today are now the type who are advocating to let trans-identified males into women's spaces and cheering on the female teachers (trans-identified or not) who are grooming kids in classrooms, among other popular leftist viewpoints. None of their viewpoints have changed in over thirty years. I'd say it was a fall from grace, but I'm not surprised at all. My generation (Gen Z) loves them because they were/are saying the same stuff my generation says today, and my generation acting all shocked that this rhetoric isn't new ("They were saying this stuff in 1992!!! Can you believe it??? Can't believe nothing has changed >:(.") is unbelievably cringe and shows how uninformed they are. Yeah, nothing has changed - leftists are still pushing the same dividing, hustler bullshit.
TLDR: Punk has always been shit and full of pussies, metal reigns supreme.
Worthwhile read.
Also a great endorsement for late 90s-mid 2000s pop punk. Most of that was about how much school sucked and how no one can find girlfriends. Very apolitical. XD

Movie Musical Divas Tournament: Round 1
Both of these submissions were marginal enough that I considered disqualifying them. However, my ardent devotion to the 1997 Cinderella, and my outrage over the 2024 Best Direction of a Musical results led me here.
Whitney Houston (1963-2012): Cinderella (1997) as Fairy Godmother
"She's every woman. While her movie musical career was certainly not as extensive as the other nominees, it is most definitely iconic. Help make the impossible, possible and vote for Whitney Houston!" - anonymous
Maria Friedman (1960- ): Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1999) as The Narrator
"Maria as the Narrator is SO iconic in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat—funny, sexy, smart, possibly the bisexual awakening of some of us (shh), a tiny pixie holding her own among murderous singing brothers, posh Pottifars, snooty pharoahs and Donny Osmond. I desire her carnally and I also want to be here. Vote for this icon." - anonymous
This is Round 1 of the Movie Musical Divas tournament. Additional polls in this round may be found by searching #mmround1, or by clicking the link below. Add your propaganda and support by reblogging this post.

Maria Friedman:
"I'm tempted to post the entire movie, since you can find it in full on YouTube, but here's a more feasible sample clip—perfect because it shows her doing the Seductive Eye Contact™ at 1:54 (and in copious other moments): "

Propaganda
Anna May Wong (The Thief of Bagdad, Shanghai Express)—Wong was the first Chinese American movie star, arguably the first Asian woman to make it big in American films. Though the racism of the time often forced her into stereotypical roles, awarded Asian leading roles to white actors in yellowface, and prohibited on-screen romance between actors of different races, she delivered powerful and memorable performances. When Hollywood bigotry got to be too much, she made movies in Europe. Wong was intellectually curious, a fashion icon, and a strong advocate for authentic Asian representation in cinema. And, notably for the purposes of this tournament, absolutely gorgeous.
Josephine Baker (The Siren of the Tropics, ZouZou)— Josephine Baker was an American born actress, singer, and utter icon of the period, creating the 1920s banana skirt look. She was the first black woman to star in a major motion film. She fought in the French resistance in WWII, given a Legion of Honour, as well as refusing to perform in segregated theatres in the US. She was bisexual, a fighter, and overall an absolutely incredible woman as well as being extremely attractive.
This is round 6 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Anna May Wong propaganda:

"She so so gorgeous!! Due to Hollywood racism she was pretty limited in the roles she got to play but even despite that she’s so captivating and deserves to be known as a leading lady in her own right!! When she’s on screen in Shanghai Express I can’t look away, which is saying something because Marlene Dietrich is also in that film."

"SHE IS ON THE BACK OF QUARTERS also she was very smart and able to speak multiple languages and is a fashion icon on top of the acting/singing"

"Paved the way for Asian American actresses AND TOTAL HOTTIE!!! She broke boundaries and made it her mission to smash stereotypes of Asian women in western film (at the time, they were either protrayed them as delicate and demure or scheming and evil). In 1951, she made history with her television show The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong, the first-ever U.S. television show starring an Asian-American series lead (paraphrased from Wikipedia). Also, never married and rumor has it that she had an affair with Marlene Dietrich. We love a Controversial Queen!"

"She's got that Silent Era smoulder™ that I think transcends the very stereotypical roles in which she was typically cast. Also looks very hot smouldering opposite Marlene Dietrich in "Shanghai Express"; there's kiss energy there."

"Hot as hell and chronically overlooked in her time, she's truly phenomenal and absolutely stunning"

"A story of stardom unavoidably marred by Hollywood racism; Wong's early-career hype was significantly derailed by the higher-up's reluctance to have an Asian lead, and things only got worse when the Hayes code came down and she suddenly *couldn't* be shown kissing a white man--even if that white man was in yellowface. After being shoved into the Dragon Lady role one too many times, she took her career to other continents for many years. Still, she came back to America eventually, being more selective in her roles, speaking out against Asian stereotypes, and in the midst of all of this finding the time to be awarded both the title of "World's Best Dressed Woman" by Mayfair Mannequin Society of New York and an honorary doctorate by Peking University."
"Incredible beauty, incredible actress, incredible story."

"-flapper fashion ICON. look up her fits please <3 -rumors of lesbianism due to her Close Friendships with marlene dietrich & cecil cunningham, among others -leveraged her star power to criticize the racist depictions of Chinese and Asian characters in Hollywood, as well as raise money and popular support for China & Chinese refugees in the 1930s and 40s. -face card REFUSED to decline"

Josephine Baker:

Black, American-born, French dancer and singer. Phenomenal sensation, took music-halls by storm. Famous in the silent film era.

Let's talk La Revue Negre, Shuffle Along. The iconique banana outfit? But also getting a Croix de Guerre and full military honors at burial in Paris due to working with the Resistance.

She exuded sex, was a beautiful dancer, vivacious, and her silliness and humor added to her attractiveness. She looked just as good in drag too.

So I know she was more famous for other stuff than movies and her movies weren’t Hollywood but my first exposure to her was in her films so I’ve always thought of her as a film actress first and foremost. Also she was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture so I think that warrants an entry
Iconic! Just look up anything about her life. She was a fascinating woman.

How did you conjure up the icon, the myth, the legend themselves, E D. Domino? Did you tear off a little bit of your soul and give it a name or did they just pop into existence, serving cunt as the lord intended?
I got an ask forever ago where I explain the Deep Author Lore™ here and the origins of the fic, but in essence; yup. Might have offered a piece of my soul to the cosmic void in a dream and had that funky little bisexual given to me in return.
When I started writing Ed I had three tenants that guided their personality; panic, make it funny, and if you can kick ass you fucking KICK ASS. But yes, they do serve cunt as the lord intended — if in this analogy I'm the lord (this is my god complex talking) or the lord is the dream demon.
