Great news for those in North America - TubiTV has added Black Jack 21 and Osamu Dezaki's Treasure Island anime to their streaming catalog! Black Jack 21 is a 2004 adaptation of Tezuka's classic manga, which you might remember streaming from the now defunct AnimeSols. Hot on the heals of Discotek's recent bluray releases of Dezaki's Treasure Island anime adaptations, Tubi is streaming both the TV series and the film! A great way to check them out if you were on the fence about picking them up.

Thinking about how Osamu Tezuka would have originally concluded Renka's role in Black Jack because for the most part she's just sort of there and later becomes an obstacle, whereas the animated BJ21 series kind of made her more of a secondary(ish) antagonist, and a surprisingly sympathetic one at that considering how her character was pretty much used as a tool by pretty much everyone, including Black Jack, our protagonist, the moment he first operated on her for his revenge against his father (and probably her too, but as far as we know the blame and punishment was solely for the father being an unapologetic ass and making her into a tool more than an accomplice of the father's infidelity). Everything from Black Jack giving her his mother's face and her husband and daughter's death would have lead to some third meeting and fateful interaction in the manga.. Or maybe never, since Black Jack never had an official conclusion, starting off with some plot but ultimately becoming a more episodic series.
That being said, I also have other issues with Black Jack 21 as it creates an entirely original story to sorta add more action and drama to an anime that was made to be a tamer version of Black Jack (making the mood change sorta redundant?) and making BJ's terrible, selfish, no-good father redeemable (a decision I don't really like and personally felt was weird the more I read Tezuka's mangas. That man had father issues...)
The only part that I'm still on the fence about with BJ21 is Benitokage and Shoren as both characters are pretty much a reinterpretation of Shoren's role in the manga (something I have rambled about a lot about on this blog when comparing Black Jack characters to Dororo characters). I liked that they used Shoren and expanded on her in the series, but didn't enjoy that they had to split her character into two separate entities (the major half being an actual OC) instead of just taking her as she was and making her more of an active player (I mean kinda get why they did this but still).
Black Jack 21 was weird...

June 10 - Achieve | @jegulus-microfic | wc: 684, tw: mention of blood
The room is too packed for Regulus’ liking. Servers bustle around, carrying tea and strong liquors from table to table, every 5 minutes or so one of them jostling his chair with their orders. The man sitting next to him smells vaguely of antiseptic and mint chocolate, a weird combination even for his sensitive nose. Regulus inhales.
Two small, Chinese women stare at him with mistrust in their eyes, their cantonese flying out their mouths quicker than Regulus’ hundreds of hours spent on Youtube trying to learn it once at fifteen can help him understand. There’s a man, probably in his 60’s, half asleep with his chin on his hands, a dark red cane keeping his head up. Regulus’ lungs expand.
A man in late twenties keeps looking at him with a calculated glint in his eyes that gives nothing away. The banker keeps shuffling the cards, pointedly staring at the only vacant seat at the table.
Regulus keeps his exhales longer than it should be.
There’s a nagging thought somewhere lost in the sea of thoughts, not floating away like clouds the way he was told would happen if he just didn’t intervene.
You see, this is what Regulus does know. The storage room in the back of a 7- Eleven - which at night apparently is big enough to fit three tables full of men and women squandering their savings away - is way too packed for Regulus’ liking. There are two Chinese women who are spitting Cantonese at a firing rate. He can smell antiseptic and mint. There is a man younger than thirty who can see right into Regulus’ soul. The banker keeps on shuffling. A man who looks ready to call it quits from life is probably asleep already. Regulus can barely breathe.
He should go. This was a big mistake.
He tries to make up his mind. The old man keeps on sleeping. He tries not to regret the two months worth of rent entrance he paid just to be there. Just to be jolted by tables on wheels. He exhales. That glint in those eyes never goes away.
And just when he feels confident enough to call it quits, face the two women’s wrath, leave that glint behind, there is a new figure throwing itself into the vacant seat. The banker clears his throat. Regulus exhales again. That glint moves to a new target.
Motherfucker.
James Potter smiles bashfully at the table. Lets his gaze pass Regulus, his eyes crinkling. Regulus prays Potter doesn’t recognize him. The two women soften at Potter’s boyish smile, finally shutting up.
The old man snorts and then opens his eyes. He grunts. “Are we doing this or not?”
Regulus can’t breathe. He needs to get out, get out, get out get out get out get ou-
“Sorry for the long wait. You guys know how the traffic is.” James fucking Potter makes small talk at a dingy table with what looks like a group made of half criminals and half mobster wifes.
The banker shuffles the cards again. Nobody speaks. Regulus tries to let his thoughts float
think of clouds think of clouds think of clouds think of clouds think of clouds
The compulsive need to topple his chair, get the hell out, forget about that glint, smash James Potter’s face into a jagged mirror, let himself get cut, look at the blood look at the blood look at the blood
“Ladies and gentlemen. Are we ready?” The banker surveys the table, doesn't wait for a response.
don’t count don’t count don’t count
Regulus tries not to obsessively stare at the banker’s hands. Tries not to obsessively stare at James who in turn stares obsessively at Regulus. Tries not to think about what Potter is trying to achieve.
The banker deals the two cards, face down, to each punter.
He ignores James “I’m an FBI agent playing cards illegally in a shady backroom while my bestfriend’s (who is also an FBI agent) little brother is at the same table counting cards” Potter’s shit eating grin.
fuck
He picks up the cards.

So, those Black Jack TV and Black Jack 21 episodes I noted as having an OVA-influenced look or "low budget, but with Osamu Dezaki aspirations"... it wasn't somone mimicking the style. It was lierally storyboarded, designed, and/or directed by Sugino Akio himself, who is the artist responsible for the character designs in so many of Osamu Dezaki's works.
Black Jack (TV) : Storyboard (eps 4, 20), Character Design (6 episodes), Animation Director (6 episodes) Black Jack 21 (TV) : Character Design (eps 4, 9, 15), Animation Director (eps 4, 9, 15), Layout (eps 4, 9, 15)
Tumblr media
It's too particular and detailed a style to pull off easily, so when it's done well and looks good, it's very very good, but when a clumsy artist falls ever so slightly short, oh boy, you're going to notice it more and it's going to look weird.
Tumblr media
Suzie looks cute in Tezuka's clean and highly stylized/super-simplified shoujo style. Suzie... is still a cute kid in BJ 21, but her eyes often seem to be off-center/she looks like she has a squint.
Tumblr media
(Although, I do appreciate the dedication to incorporate the many dainty lashes Suzie and PInoko have in the manga in her anime design. Black Jack has thick, lush lashes too with eyes closed, but I think a good chunk of animators do seem to include that too, although maybe not as consistently.)

The Fallout Series Every character that I worked on from Fallout Equestria and Project Horizons. This is the series that kicked off my Youtube channel. Which, of course, is currently dead, for the moment. :P There is a final peice in the works that will feature all of them. But life had me put that on hold. It will get finished. I just don't quite know when yet.
Tumblr media
A couple of them got some updates. Like Black Jack and Glory.
You can view the time-lapse videos of each one here: https://www.youtube.com/@suiginmigasuto3356/videos
