If RWBY does officially get purchased/renewed, I think it’s finally time to change my name to something RWBY related. I’ve had one name saved for a while, but I wont make the change until it’s confirmed.

As an ex-USA resident who spent time in the UK, traveling there felt like being in a fictional story, but one that might have been written by someone suffering from ruinous sleep deprivation. For each normal sounding name there'd be a half-dozen syllable-salads, pulled from the semi-conscious fingers of a somnambulant typist.
Look at the scale. Within a 5km radius (about 3 miles) you've got Offord Cluny, Duck End, Graveley, Papworth St Agnes, Toseland and Yelling.
I'd be trying to figure out where to taks the train, and would be like, "Ooh, I take the train from Kings Cross? Just like that wizard boy! And then I go north through New... Southgate? Then East Finchley and... 'Cockfosters'? Really? Okay, Cockfosters, Hatfield, Knebworth, Ickleford, and get off at Letchworth?"
There are valid historical, linguistic and etymological reasons for all those names. But damn if it didn't feel like the geographic equivalent of the SNES Fighting Baseball roster.
I'm shipping a lot of stuff to the USA rght now and every time I type a US address part of me feels like my books are being purchased by a fictional character. I'm like "Ooh, this one's going to Texas! And this one to Omaha! Like those places from the TV!"
#Bobson Dugnutt#Sleve McDichael#Todd Bonzales#Fenstaton#Bluntisham#Pidley#They all seem so plausible...

“The Vampire Dies in No Time” is the official translation used in Japanese media, straight from the author. It’s also implied to be Draluc’s title, as in he is know as “the vampire, Dies on no Time.” Other vampires are addressed that way (for instance, Ken would be the “the vampire, Yakyuken Lover”).
(RE: my review of The Vampire Dies in No Time anime and comments about how the title bugs me)
I know it's the official translation because as I pointed out in the review, the English title is right there in the actual animation (and is verbalized by the Japanese narrator when using the Japanese language option). Interesting that it came straight from the author, but I'm not surprised since it clearly came from Japan, I just have no way of knowing if they consulted with/considered opinions from native English speakers when making that decision, because I maintain it doesn't sound natural; it feels either like it's the answer to a question that's been left out ("how quickly does the vampire die?") and thus makes the title feel incomplete, or it feels like an incredibly awkwardly-phrased way to say "the vampire dies all the time," where "in no time" does not have the same connotation as "all the time."
Like I said, I enjoyed the show! But the title bugs me, and I had a negative-enough reaction just to seeing it that except for episodes showing randomly on Crunchyroll's 24/7 Roku TV channel, I never would've chosen to start watching.
The idea that "Dies in No Time" is Draluc's vampire moniker is intriguing and fitting, I admit, and would also be very funny, but that's separate from experiencing the title as a native English speaker.
#sprachgefuhl#perhaps#The Vampire Dies in No Time#ask#it's not like this is a new thing. people have been creating names & titles for languages/cultures they don't know well forever#this isn't a Bobson Dugnutt/Sleve McDichael situation#this is just a title that has no *technical* problems that is a persistent but minor annoyance to me a random internet gremlin

[Image descriptions for 3 screenshots. The first two are from a baseball stats page, one of a pitcher born in 1890 in Cleveland, OH named Urban Shocker and the second of a shortstop, pinch runner, and second baseman born in 1900 in Waco, TX named Boob Fowler. The third is white text on a blue background, from (I think) a Japanese video game listing potential American names. They are: Sleve McDichael, Onson Sweemey, Darryl Archideld, Anatoli Smorin, Rey Mcsriff, Glenallen Mixon, Mario McRlwain, Kevin Nogilny, Tony Smehrik, Bobson Dugnutt, Willie Dustice, Jeromy Gride, Scott Dourque, Shown Furcotte, Dean Wesrey, Mike Truk, Dwigt Rortugal, Tim Sandaele, Karl Dandleton, Mike Sernandez, and Todd Bonzalez.]
baseball players in the 20s were all named shit like Dipsy Doodle and Crunch Johnson
#ballgame player names#npcs#ok i was gonna put this on my secret dnd sideblog but honestly this is good information for everyone to have#no secrets here! just some famous ballgame players#Bobson Dugnutt is really good but I have a mild obsession with Dwigt Rortugal and Karl Dandleton#handy for reference

WWE just announced a bunch of trademarks for in-ring names that sound almost AI-generated (Drako Knox, Haze Jameson, Trill London, Masyn Holiday) and multiple jokes collided in my head so now I want to know what other people think of when they hear a name that registers as funky

It feels a little redudant to call for a boycott of american military propaganda terrorist action movie number 29,378 like oh i was going to go and see Bobson Dugnutt strangling an arab man to death in the desert while crying tears of patriotism about his mother who died on 9/11 before he was born but I heard this one was kinda problematic? Somebody said this one might be racist??

My posts
I spent the first half of the week struggling through (well-medicated) mania and the second half currently with a sinus infection! I’m not enjoying it! Not either one!

The Hot Vintage Lady Polls continue to go for the throat. I felt so bad about Dorothy Dandridge that I started posting and reblogging propaganda for her, but Ava Gardner, my beloved, went through anyway. Backing her felt like a wish on a monkey’s paw ("Not like this!!"). (See all poll results here.) I tremble to think what round 5 will look like. Like, there’s a point when your girl is gonna come up against a Hepburn, you know?
Notably gone this week: Judy Garland, Julie Andrews, Lupe Vélez, Irene Papas (who took out Vivien Leigh in the previous round), Gene Tierney, Barbara Stanwyck, Lena Horne, Jean Seberg, Anita Ekberg, Angela Lansbury, and Cyd Charisse. Like I keep saying, everybody loses. Everybody but one. Round 5 will start May 1st.

Hozier Watch 2024: His first U.S. #1, which he’s now playing at shows! The first U.S. #1 for an Irish artist in 34 years! What?? you cry. Did “Take Me to Church” not do that ten years ago? Well, I went and looked it up: No. That was the “Blank Space” era. Say no more.
Speaking of Taylor Swift—Paste Magazine went IN on the new album and got threats as a result. Meanwhile, Taylor’s fans are harassing the ex-boyfriend who did nothing wrong (as opposed to the racist one) because her PR is egging them on. I’ll admit: even though I’m not a fan, I found the Paste review to be overlong and not focused enough on the actual songs, proportionally. But that post about the PR saga is everything I miss about Fandom Wank.
(“My rival dresses to display her legs, and her shoes are of an alluring fashion”)
Meanwhile, the Watcher guys issued the best apology possible, although it was still excruciating to watch. (Background.) They will remain on YouTube while introducing the streaming service. As a Patreon member, I haven’t asked for my free subscription code yet, but I’m going to. Some fans forgave them pretty easily; others have walked away. I’m curious to see if this affects the mood of anything new they film, since a segment of the fandom got really, really ugly about it. Mostly it just felt sad all around.
Meanwhile, in Alabama: nobody wants to measure the feral hog.
Turns out Death Note had a good reason to concoct “American” names like “Bobson Dugnutt.” Also, I somehow had two posts tagged “death note” this week and I don’t even go here.
