I know I’m gonna sound like a huge hypocrite bc I feel like my ED helps me and I loved the feeling I got, but I’m telling you it’s not worth it. I’ve lost so many developmental years and experiences I’ll never get back because of my ED.

I didn’t get prom or even college. I ended up dropping out of college bc I couldn’t manage. I still don’t know how to drive, I haven’t had a real romantic relationship bc body insecurities. I can’t support myself financially. I don’t know how to be an adult bc I spent so many of those discovery years ⭐️ ving myself.

Despite what I tell myself. The times when I did reach my ugw are not worth this

At the end of the day i feel like criticising societal beauty standards and the economic system that seeks to exploit them for profit is more constructive than criticising the concept of ~cosmetic~ surgery or attempting to draw a line between what is and isnt a cosmetic alteration.

Like yeah im nitpicking and it doesnt mean i dont think individual surgeons never capitalise on racism/misogyny/body dysmorphia etc i just feel if the start and main focus of your critique is on the industry but not the cogs that drive it to begin with you arent going to come up with any solutions beyond trying to restrict peoples ability to alter themselves. Which is not a win in any capacity.

Like i know multiple people who have gotten gastric band surgery, a procedure i hate vehemently. But i dont want to dictate that choice for them, and i sympathise because the fatphobia that influences the prevalence of the surgery is also directly impacting the lives of fat people who seek it.

Like it just seems insensitive to place any blame on the surgery recipient or assume they arent aware of the factors that could inffluence their decision. And rather than focus on eliminating weight loss procedures i would like to focus on making living as a fat person something that isnt being subject to continuous cruelty or neglect.

Like these things are connected its just which end of the connection i think needs combatting ykwim?

But i also have petty gripes because i think its silly to assume any kind of aesthetic procedure must be rooted in xyz form of oppression because it ignores that people do also make choices about their appearance that are about rejecting societal standards or just, not about those standards at all.

Like what could be classed as a cosmetic procedure is a broad scope and logically it wouldnt make sense to not include things like extensive tattooing, horn implants, unusual body piercings etc etc

ive thought a lot abt psychiatry n mental illness the last couplea months, n just like... thinking abt the standards of mental illness. like, treatment is less abt helping people be as safe and comfortable as they want and need to be, and more abt pushing them into a mindset deemed "normal and functioning" to capitalist and individualist society. it doesnt matter what the mentally ill person wants or how they feel, bc their bodily autonomy and human rights were stripped from them the second theyre deemed a "threat" (to themselves, to others, to their caregiver's feelings, to profit margins)

thats why i want to only talk to and hear from other mentally ill people on this subject now. especially more demonized mindsets like schizophrenia. our voices have been silenced and deemed unnecessary on our OWN conditions and well-being, and even when people acknowledge the horrific oppression and medial abuse mentally ill ppl faced decades ago, they still refuse to listen to the very people who faced it bc of this idea of us "not knowing what we're talking about, listen to the professionals who were also complicit in said abuse."

ive also been thinking about mental illness being synonymous with harm and pain. and while yes it can be a struggle lots of the time, i wonder where the pain starts with the mental illness alone, and where it starts with capitalist oppression and a refusal to accommodate us. Think abt how autism is thought of a different way of minds to work rather than a mental illness for some autistic people. and think abt all the posts saying how autistic and adhd-having people in the past could use their mindsets for unique ways to help others, like spotting patterns or being hyperaware. and i think about this article i read on a study of hallucinatory voices and how they are heard differently depending on culture, some people even saying they are comforting or are the voices of loved ones. and the people mostly describing them as scary or harmful were Americans, and how this could possibly be shaped by public perception and media portrayals of schizophrenia. it makes me wonder what traits of mentally ill people, even the "scary" illnesses, can be divided into "good" or "bad", and what it means to want to "cure" those illnesses.

You visited his shrine daily and left him small offerings. Ones that he would have rejected in the past but was positively thrilled to have now. The god began to love you. And the god once more inflicted his wrath upon your enemies. This time he tore them apart limb from limb, starting from their mouths to their hands and eventually to their feet. He wished to start out by ripping out the tongues that spat venomous words at you. To break every bone in their hands and feet for the pain they inflicted on you. For every sin committed against you, he would inflict it back tenfold.

i know it doesnt have to be "as bad" as it used to be for it to still be impacting me severely. i know others suffering doesnt make my pain any less real. and yet i am sitting here feeling severe guilt over smthn thats supposed to be "natural" bc it causes such excessive pain (even when i am medicated & take pain meds to help it) that i may have to completely rearrange my Saturday bc i am in no condition to do what i had planned and if the pain doesn't stop I'll have to cancel and ik its important to prioritize my health but also i wish i could just grit through the pain bc i feel so guilty cancelling 🙃
