George Saunders as a great literature teacher 👨‍🏫 one did not have in school. The teacher you want to follow everywhere, through every story he suggests. Did I like all the short stories by Russian writers in this book? No, but only because they are so well-written that they feel too real, bring back too many memories, one of which made me take this picture. My first impulse was to take a picture with gooseberries since one of the stories in the book is called “Gooseberries” and because Pushkin, the most revered writer in Russia, loved gooseberry jam a lot 😋. Guess what? It's impossible to find gooseberries nowadays 🤷🏼‍♀️ Also, I realized Russia is not associated with gooseberries for me but with currants. And here is a fact about life in Russia nobody asked for, which might help you to understand the Russian psyche: In my childhood everyone I knew had a dacha with a plot of land where you could grow stuff to eat in winter. Usually the berry ratio looked like this: one-two gooseberry bushes to ten currant bushes. Now… I don’t know a single person who likes currants 🤔 At the end of summer we used to make jam: one jar of much cherished gooseberry jam, many - of currant jam. You couldn’t eat the gooseberry jam first because it felt really special, so you had to soldier on and finish the endless currant jam first (once opened, a jar of currant jam could sit on your fridge shelf forever because one knows only so many ways of eating something one doesn’t like (put it in a cake?). I still don’t understand why we (and other people) had so many currant bushes…Were they easier to grow? Were they an obstacle you had to overcome to get to the thing you truly liked? Did the gooseberry jam taste sweeter because there was so little of it? I feel the same about Russian literature as I did about the jam: most stories have something precious in them, one idea that may change you forever, but you have to be prepared to have your heart wrenched. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #instabook #instabookstagram #whattoread #whattoreadnext #russianliterature #nonfiction #nonfictionbooks #booksaboutbooks #booksaboutwriting #georgesaunders #aswiminapondintherain (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU7f-zKoM-S/?utm_medium=tumblr

Books I’ve Read:
My Review....Some books I find, well maybe they find me, but I do find that some books, suit me so well, I'm at a terrible loss when they finish. This was one of those books. The first half had me laughing and making lists of my own. I loved some of the List Categories: Things that Bring a Strange Delight, Things that Might Happen Tomorrow and Peaceful Things. The second half was a wonderful insight into the author’s and in general, a writer's life - their thoughts, their routines, the note taking, the time wasting. All done in the best possible taste.... for the cause of research. - 5 stars!
P.S. @aineelena...I think this is the book that gave me the idea of collecting first lines. :)

Just a small stack (and one standing up because the name isn't on the spine 🙄) of books I swear by that taught me most of everything I know. The rest of what I know was - of course - obtained through trial and error. #writing #writer #writersofinstagram #writingcommunity #author #authorsofinstagram #booksaboutwriting #2kto10k #ShowDon'tTell #WhereNightmaresComeFrom #ConversationsonWriting #SteeringtheCraft #TheEmotionalCraftofFiction #OnWritingandWorldBuilding #(Tim,yourbookhassometyposbtw) #TheWarofArt #TheWarofArtBook https://www.instagram.com/p/CIv9Tm9nCP5/?igshid=4qbivlbgzk6q

Happy #BookBirthday to @gailcarriger ! And bless her for writing this book. I studied creative writing and mythology all throughout high school and college and NOT ONCE did I ever hear about the heroine's journey, only the hero's. I'm so excited to read this book and finally learn about this thing. I got a new writing book. This one has been so helpful and I always find myself grabbing it if I need to find a way to describe or show the emotion a character has. If you're a writer, then you should definitely try to get this if you can. . I hope you have a great day full of positive thoughts. #amwriting #booksaboutwriting https://www.instagram.com/p/BpQKcDhHLJenEN-bIEHVGnGFiVvBuPttXEW2xE0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=2h8hstk76gc5

“Falling’s the part that takes your breath away. It’s the part when you can’t believe you’re the person standing in front of you both exists and happened to wander into your path. It’s supposed to make you feel lucky to alive, exactly when and where you are.” ✨📚✨📚✨ Beach Read by Emily Henry is a fiendishly clever contemporary romance novel centring around two writers and a bet. I thought the premise of this book was incredibly clever. Two writers struggling with their next novel, as well as their own personal issues, and so a bet is formed: write a book in the others genre and get published first. What follows next is a slow burn frenemies to lovers romance that was as romantic as it was sarcastic. I absolutely adored the banter and the eventual relationship between January Andrews and Augustus ‘Gus’ Everett. That being said, I think why I loved this book so much was because it discussed some emotionally hard hitting topics which added depth to both the book, but also to the characters and their development. I love when romance stories have angst/drama that comes from outside of the relationship, rather than because of/about the relationship, and I feel like there was a fantastic balance between the two. I was a fan of Henry’s writing style. It was descriptive and lyrical. It was also really fascinating to read the narrative alongside the book January was writing, but I was a bit disappointed that went didn’t get to see Gus’s point of view or parts of his novel. Overall, though, I really loved this novel and I can’t wait to pick up my books from this author! ✨📚✨📚✨ Beach Read is book 27 for 2022. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2022 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #beachread #emilyhenry #emilyhenrybeachread #booksaboutwriting #contemporaryromance https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc4xb9qLlyb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Glad I stepped away from “The Devil Aspect” to read this one—it’s an intriguing darkly funny story about an asshole never-was writer any writer can identify with whether they like it or not. You feel for the guy, even while you find it hard to even like him. But it has a great quick, energetic pace to it, kind of manic, despite Todd stumbling, confused through his life and the mystery of this book that only he remembers.... 📚🎧 #gsbbooks #gsbreadsdavidquantick . . . . . . . . . #gasstationburrito #books #bookish #bookworm #booknerd #reading #currentlyreading #whatImreading #bookaholic #booklove #bookquotes #audiobook #whatimlisteningto #libbyapp #goodreads #davidquantick #allmycolors #booksaboutbooks #booksaboutwriters #writingaboutwriters #writersareweird #blackcomedy #darkcomedy https://www.instagram.com/p/B6lg02UhlQz/?igshid=1o796nommtr7l
