not to be dramatic but Harley offering Dinah a hair tie during a fight scene was one of the most cathartic moments I’ve ever experienced in a superhero movie

BoP Thoughts.
I’ve been holding off any expressing of opinion until I actually sat down and saw it, so here it is. I went in knowing that this was supposed to be a HQ solo but Margot Robbie asked to include other female characters. So that set the stage for my expectations.
Of course, no explicit spoilers, and only focusing on Dinah, Renee and Cass.
Dinah:
Fantastic. Absolutely LOVE her and her interactions with Renee. I didn’t expect the latter but I’m glad it was written in!
As Jurnee has said, Dinah’s mom is mentioned as the reason she’s disillusioned and not a crimefighter. Despite so, we see her innate compassion and caring peek out as much as she tries to remain distant from helping others. I do like this journey of hers to regain what she’d lost and essentially become her mom’s legacy.
Canary Cry sent me chills! Chills!
How the film ended on her storyline (along with Renee’s) made me very happy. I can’t wait to see more, please give us this!!
Renee:
All around IN LOVE with Ms. Montoya
She’s not straight, no ifs ors or buts. Not heavily implied or subtext; it’s CLEARLY SAID. Like in the Variety report, the film introduces Ali Wong’s character as her “ex”. It doesn’t mention she’s exclusively attracted to women, or use the term lesbian, but of course we’re gonna go by comic canon
I think it was a flawed creative decision to leave out the lesbophobia that Renee experiences in the comics. In the film, sexism is her only barrier. Apparently the GCPD is sexist but not lesbophobic! Huh.
She got way more screentime than I expected but that happens when she’s essentially an opponent to HQ for the first two acts.
Little nods to her alcoholism in the comics. Her opening scene shows how skilled and great a detective she is and I wished they used that analytical mind of hers more.
Both Dinah & Renee had excellent fight scenes and it’s apparent that they have different styles too.
Cass:
Admittedly, the only thing that’s keeping me from loving this film and not just liking it is the huge reinterpretation of Cassandra Cain.
I can understand that Christina Hodson, being an East Asian woman herself, may not have necessarily wanted to write a “silent E.Asian martial artist” archetype, hence all the changes. But that takes away how much not a one-dimensional caricature Cass Cain is. She is non-verbal and struggles with language, but is SO expressive in her facial expressions and her actions. She laughs, she rages, she shows emotional pain; she’s not stoic. If you keep these in mind, Cass was definitely not gonna be another Katana, who IS a stoic and less expressive E.Asian character.
Honestly, I am very surprised with the direction that two E.Asian women creatives took for their only Asian main character. I had thought it was a safe helming to have them on board handling this iconic E.Asian character. That I could expect more complexity, more layered, more delving into what makes her tick the way the other adult women in the film were given. The deaging had thrown me off when first announced, but you can still have the above even with a young girl. Mostly, I feel it was a huge shame not to incorporate what made Cass beloved to many fans: her core traits of deep empathy, compassion, and belief in redeeming oneself. A line or two added into her dialogue would’ve shown that latter trait, but it was a missed opportunity.
While I love the ending for Dinah and Renee, I really dislike the ending for Cass. I could see it coming, and it’s set up well throughout the film, but still didn’t lessen the sting.

BOP SPOILERS//
i just watched bop and literally the only thing wrong with the movie was cass
it just. bothered me the entire movie. i couldn’t enjoy it properly because it didn’t make ANY FUCKING SENSE and was such a disrespect to the character??? like, there’s not a single reason for that girl to be called cassandra cane. she never goes through anything remotely similar to anything in cass’ life, has none of her personality traits and can’t even fight??? i kept waiting for a plot twist or SOMETHING to justify saying that girl is cass but there’s not a single thing. i mean, i get that they probably wanted a batgirl, and barbara is too connected to batman for it to be possible in the dceu as it is now (not to mention her possible solo movie) but then just use steph???? it’s still not ideal but honestly if there’s anyone in the batfam that i could ser in the role of their cass it’d be (jason and) steph
(quite honestly, now that i think about it, jason would be perfect for that role)
plus [MAJOR SPOILERS] she doesn’t even end up in the birds of prey???? the group only forms at the end of the movie, and it’s just helena, dinah and renee. “cassandra” runs off with harley and becomes her protégé. so, really, they should’ve just made up an original character. i’m actually really, genuinely, curious as to why they named that girl cassandra cane.

My thoughts about Harley in The Suicide Squad
First off, I’d like to say that I really enjoyed the movie and the characters, but Harley is the only one I know well enough to make that kind of post about!
I’d also like to say that I know James Gunn didn’t watch Birds Of Prey (which was really unprofessional of him) but I’ll make a few connections between those movies because I think it still makes sense
I’d like to start with positive remarks with her character in the movie!
Her costume design/outfits were great and were comic book-y, and fitted very well with her character. They weren’t chosen to please the male gaze, they were chosen because that’s what made sense for her to wear
I really liked the touch in the scene where she escapes from her captors, because you can see she’s obviously pissed off. Unlike in BOP where she’s making snarky comments and having fun while attacking the police station, in TSS she barely smiles and doesn’t talk. She’s very focused and angry because they tortured her and she’s fighting to survive, whereas in BOP she was fighting to find someone (and to survive, but the situation was very different). I like that the movie made us see a more serious part of her, a scarier one even (when she looks at the torturer while she’s still tied to the ceiling and when she screams her heart out later). She’s obviously not there by choice and we understand that clearly by the way she fights
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way they introduced her was just… perfect. It’s rare we see a woman eat normally on the big screen, even rarer to see one even talk about going to the bathroom/having basic human needs, but the first time we see her in TSS she just casually announces that she took a shit. It made sense for her character, it was funny and it wasn’t for the male-gaze, contrarily to her introduction in the first Suicide Squad
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She wasn’t once portrayed or referred to as Joker’s sidekick. She was her own woman, just like in BOP, and everyone saw her as that
The ‘sex’ scene wasn’t made to show off her body and excite men. We didn’t see her in her underwear, we didn’t have a close up on her moaning or other stuff like that, we just saw them making out and then the dude without his boxers after. We didn’t need to see her naked to understand they had sex, they didn’t even sexualized her one bit in the only scene it would’ve made sense
Tumblr media
Now for the more negative remarks:
It is well known that Harley adores all animals , and the fact that she barely interacted with Cleo and Nanaue was a big mistake on the writers’ part. She should’ve at least shook Sebastian’s hand and made a comment about how Nanaue was adorable or something, and the fact that they didn’t even do that kinda hints that they didn’t really know her character a lot beyond being a funny clown
Honestly that’s pretty much it for the negative, I didn’t really had issues other than the writers forgetting about a big part of her personality

Okay but at the end of BOP when they were all getting drinks and stuff and complimenting each other and Renee says that Helena’s bow is cool and Dinah corrects her and says it’s a crossbow and Helena just looks at Dinah likes she’s so grateful and like no one’s ever defended her like that SO PURE

There’s one thing I found interesting in Birds of Prey... well I found all of it interesting but there’s one thing specifically.
(spoilers)
Tumblr media
And It’s this hint of there being more to the story between Black Canary and Harley Quinn. More specifically, Dinah’s voice and how they made it seem like a THING that no one knew that she’s a metahuman with a sonic scream (Roman definitely didn’t know or he would have started taking advantage of her skill like he started to take advantage of her having combat skills once he learned about them)... but that Harley Quinn DID KNOW.
And that by that look shared between them when Harley urged her to use her scream against the goons near the end of the movie it also looked like Dinah KNEW that Harley knew.
Which is just... interesting.
I mean I know they didn’t really know each other before the start of the movie. They weren’t friends. They didn’t hang out. They hadn’t had any personal conversations.
But we know that Black Canary had been singing at that club for many years. And we know that Harley Quinn has been hanging out at that club a lot too and making enemies all over the place there. So they also clearly were aware of each other.
And by the looks of the film it seems that Harley has known about Black Canary’s scream for a long while before the beginning of the movie, from before her breakup with the Joker. And here’s what I find so awesome about that: Harley Quinn didn’t expose that about Dinah. Not to anyone. Not to Roman. Not to the Joker. Because if no one knew and it looked like no one knew ///but Harley knew/// then it was a secret that Black Canary found important to not expose and Harley had respected.
I just love women protecting other women.
And I think IF this really was the case then I just find it makes that scene where Dinah protected the drunk Harley even more powerful, because it adds a mutual element to the whole thing.
Anyway. I just found it a curious detail that hinted at elements of information that wasn’t spelled out but was still very present.
edit: @meetmeintheafterglowww and @loxare have pointed out that it was actually Detective Montoya who urged Dinah to use her powers and I checked and they’re right, I was misremembering the scene so this post is being downgraded from personal headcanon to a cool AU I’d like to read. So, sorry for the mess? *grins uncertainly*

I love Dinah Lance in Birds of Prey and the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn
I have so much love for our new Dinah Lance, she’s quite amazing and beautiful and her character story in BoP movie is... I don’t even know how to explain it but it’s fucking relatable and beautiful and empowering and strong and so accurate to the Black Canary.
Okay so SPOILER ALERT BELOW !! If you haven’t seen Birds of Prey and the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn, do not click !!
Tumblr media
We have a Dinah who sings for a living in the Black Mask’s club, and she’s... kinda out of everything happening around her. I think she’s like a lot of us. She knows there are horrible things going on everywhere so she’s just closing her eyes to be able to keep on living. Living a “peaceful” life with her job and flat and nice car... She’s not happy, but she’s alive. She doesn’t help because she thinks it will destroy her life. Because she thinks it’s not worth it. There’s too much evil around to fight it. Let’s just live our life and survivre by doing nothing.
Tumblr media
But her heart and soul is still generous and wants to fight for a better world. She helps Harley when those two guys want to kidnap her, even if she dislikes her. She saves a woman who is getting assaulted because she can’t stand it, even if she just wants to close her eyes and go (and she tries too, but end up saving her ass anyway).
Tumblr media
Then she’s Roman’s driver, and Renee wants her to help her defeat Roman and after there the Cass mess with the goddamn diamond. And the Erica scene at the club... She knows Roman is an horrible person but she kept quiet and have done nothing because she had a comfortable life and thought she couldn’t do anything about it anyway.
Tumblr media
She still let Renee do everything and get not much implied into the whole mess, but then Zsasz discovers she’s not really loyal to Roman and want her to kill Cass. And there you go, Black Canary, our favourite fighter, comes in ! She cannot do this. Even thought it means she won’t have a protected life after that. She’s regaining her generous and protective soul we all like.
All the girls team up to defeat Roman’s dudes. They fight to protect Cassandra. Once again Dinah shows us she’s a really great fighter. And at the end of the fights, they go outside, thinking all is finished, just to get Renee shot and Cassandra taken away. She knows she has to do it. She kinda fears it it seems. But she do it.
THE BLACK DAMN CANARY Y’ALL
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(A fucking awesome canary cry if you ask me *^*)
Now we see the true potential and power from our Dinah Lance and she destroys them all ! She finally let go her “don’t see anything, can’t do anything” mindset. She’s badass and can defeat those assholes who are doing horrible things to women and people in Gotham City.
Her voice can be heard.
That’s extremely beautiful.
Tumblr media
Black Canary in this movie is the embodiment of “You can do this. You can stand up against horrible things. You can stand up and help other people. Your voice has to be heard. You can fight for justice. You’re not nothing. You’re not just a drop in the ocean. People need you to stand up for them. You can be the voice for other people”. And that’s just amazing. That’s her, that’s the Black Canary.
Women watching Birds of Prey : Be like Dinah Lance. Stand up for yourself. Stand up for your sisters. Stand up against sexism, racism, transphobia etc... May your voice be heard !
_____________________________________________________
There are so many great things in this movie, but Dinah really catches me. Maybe because I’m afraid to stand up for myself sometimes. Maybe because I also give up sometimes to make things right. So watching my favourite character on the big screen telling us we can also do it... it’s empowering, beautiful, amazing, awesome, relatable... everything.
Excuse me if all this post is messy and not well written, between my messy mind loving Dinah so much and the fact I’m french and search my words sometimes in english, it’s quite hard to tell eactly what I want :D
Did anybody else loved Dinah so much it hurts in BoP ? I want more of her, I want a solo movie *^*)

Okay but hear me out for a second.
Firstly, Shazam confirmed two things 1) That Batman exists in this Universe  and 2) That Sidekicks exist. We also have evidence in Batman Vs. Superman that there has, at some point, been a Robin, since there was a suit on display.
Secondly, we currently live in a world where we have a Robin represented in nearly every other DC Franchise!
Dick Grayson in Lego Batman
Jason Todd in Titans
Tim Drake in Young Justice
Damian Wayne in the DC Universe Original Movies
You know who is missing from that group? You know who trained with the Birds of Prey? Who is best friends with Cassandra Cain and would therefore be a perfect fit for the upcoming film? Who is objectively the coolest Robin? Stephanie Brown.
Now I’m not saying that Stephanie Brown HAS to be Robin in Birds of Prey. Or that she HAS to be in the DCEU, but COME ON. Who DOESN’T wanna see this shot in live action?!

I can't get over how perfect birds of prey was for me personally, I was most excited about Zsazs and Black Mask and they delivered perfectly, even how twisted and creepy they both are! Dinah kicks ass in THAT scene. Helena is my anti social awkward spirit animal I am in love. They didn't try remove Suicide Squad from dceu history and you see Harley work through the breakup throughout the entire movie. In the words of one fantabulous Harley Quinn. Bravo.
