Jealousy, Jealousy
Hazel Callahan x Reader (fluff)
➸ summary: hazel’s jealousy grows as she realizes that people in school aren’t taking your relationship seriously
➸ warnings/notes: none i think
➸ requested?: yes! ↴
- could u maybe do a hazel x popular reader who are already a couple but hazel gets really jealous when anybody flirts with reader thinking that she’s not reallly with hazel bc social hierarchy and all
word count: 1.4k
————————
YOU KNEW HAZEL was a bit insecure in your relationship. It was no secret that people looked at you weirdly in the hallways - and not because you were two girls, but rather because of your different places in the school’s “hierarchy”. You thought it was all bullshit and encouraged Hazel to ignore those stupid ideals.
But she just couldn’t.
To her, you were the most beautiful, perfect, out of her league person ever. She could never understand why you wanted to be with her, why you would ever diminish your reputation like that. You could have anybody; so why her?
Hazel clutched her books tightly to her chest as she rounded the corner into the cafeteria. Her eyes lit up upon seeing you, your beautiful cheerleading skirt flowing as you walked to your usual table.
It wasn’t long before her face dropped, a slight scowl settling across her features.
There, advancing towards you, was some douche quarterback who she had forgotten the name of. She didn’t miss the way his eyes lingered on your figure before he pulled out a chair next to you, wasting no time in chatting you up.
Gross.
Hazel noticed how you shook your head, your face contorting into a grimace as he seemingly made some stupid pick-up line. This was her last straw.
She didn’t know what got into her, but her feet began to grow a mind of their own. Pace speeding up with every lingering second, she managed to reach your table in record time.
“I think you’re in my seat,” she managed to say.
If this was any other day, she would’ve just ignored it. Or sat down silently until he went away. But today? She just wasn’t in the mood. People knew you had a girlfriend - so why did they feel so comfortable flirting with you in front of her? She was tired of it.
The douchebag’s head turned slowly towards Hazel.
“What?” he said. His dumb face held no emotion on it, but you could sense the tension in the small space between them.
You sat up straight in your seat, smiling sweetly at Hazel. “How about we sit outside today, babe?”
Hazel held her gaze onto the guy in the seat, her shoulders slumping slightly. Nodding her head, she let you collect your food before you grabbed her hand and began to pull her away from the table. She was glad you weren’t going to spend lunch in the cafeteria - she hated that place.
“Don’t worry!” yelled the quarterback over his shoulder, “it won’t be long before she realizes she’s too good for you.”
Turning around, you stuck up your middle finger before telling him to ‘fuck off’.
You huffed as you wrapped your arm around Hazel’s shoulders, holding her close to you. “Don’t listen to him,” you whispered before landing a soft kiss to the side of her head.
Hazel stayed silent, continuing to walk out to the courtyard. It was a bright day, so it wouldn’t be too bad to sit in the grass.
After settling onto the ground, you laid out your food so Hazel could take some. She didn’t really feel like eating, though.
She picked at some of the bits on the tray before giving up and setting it back down.
Stretching your legs, you collapsed backwards, your head falling right next to your girlfriend’s lap. She half-heartedly held your hand, her grip loose and her fingers nervously tweaking with your manicure.
“Haze, I told you not to worry about him,” you said, bringing her hand up to your lips so that you could kiss it.
Hazel swallowed thickly, taking a deep, jagged breath. Her eyes shifted to your face before quickly looking away. Instead, she focused her attention onto the trees across from her, watching as the leaves swayed gently.
She could never look you in the eyes when she was upset. Sitting up, your hand came to rest on her jaw, directing her head towards you.
“Hey, look at me,” you whispered. “You know what he said isn’t true.”
Hazel blinked away tears as she continued to fiddle with your other hand that was now resting on her lap. Deep down she knew it was all just a made-up popularity contest that wouldn’t even matter in a few months when they’d graduate. Yet she couldn’t help but worry that maybe you needed someone on your level.
- - -
Hazel sat in her usual seat next to you in biology. She had been feeling a lot better now, and was even smiling and laughing with you. But it didn’t last.
The jocks entered the classroom - late as always, of course.
The same douche from before tapped your shoulder, his tall stature standing high above you both. His back was turned to Hazel, an observation that she found to be very rude.
“Hey,” he said, his deep voice sending a wave of anger through Hazel.
“What do you want?” you mumbled as you looked away from him, boredom settling into you. You were really sick of him. After he wouldn’t leave you alone this morning you really hoped you didn’t run into him again.
Of course it was just your luck that he was in your class.
He chuckled as he slipped a note onto your desk before disappearing to the back of the class.
Rolling your eyes, you dropped the piece of paper on the floor, not even entertaining it. You turned your head back to your girlfriend only to see that she was already packing her books up.
She had a certain urgency to her that you had never seen before. Furrowing your brows, you extend your hand to comfort her but she only flinches away as she picks up her bag.
“Haze? Where are you going?” you asked tenderly.
Hazel didn’t respond, instead sniffling as she stood up and speed walked out of the room.
You were quick to stand up, not even bothering to collect your things. Hightailing it out of your biology class, you turned the corner to follow Hazel.
She barged into the bathroom, the door slamming shut behind her. It was obvious what the problem was - it was a never ending battle within her. Honestly you didn’t blame her. If people were constantly flirting with her in front of you, you’d be pretty upset too.
You made your way into the restroom, your eyes landing on Hazel’s tense figure as she leaned against the sink countertops.
The door squeaked as it closed, catching her attention.
“Hazel…” you started, walking towards her.
She only sighed as she let your take her hand in hers, her eyes flickering between the floor and her shoes.
“I’m sorry about him. I already tried getting him to leave me alone this morning.”
Hazel knew you wouldn’t ever cheat on her. That wasn’t her problem. Her problem was that he even felt confident flirting with you in front of her in the first place. It made her feel weak. It made her feel like she wasn’t worth being threatened over. If she had been a man, nobody would dare do such a thing.
“It’s not that-“ she said, her frustration causing her to cut herself off before she got mad. “I just…” she trailed off.
Her eyes looked at herself in the mirror as she took a deep breath. “Sometimes it feels like people don’t take us seriously.”
You cocked your head to the side. “What do you mean, Haze?”
“I mean,” she said, her hand coming to rub at her face, “nobody acts like we’re actually together.”
Moving to take her fidgeting hand from her face, you interlock it with your fingers. She had a faraway look on her face, as if she was deep in thought.
“But we are together,” you uttered.
Hazel’s eyes met yours. You could see the glint of unshed tears, and all you wanted to do was pull her into a bone crushing hug.
“Are we?” she said. Even she seemed surprised at her own words. Her eyes fell back down to the floor.
To say you were taken aback would be an understatement. “Baby, look at me,” you said, lifting her chin up to meet your gaze.
“I don’t care about anyone else. I’m with you. I love you. I know it sucks, but we’ll be out of here soon, and it’ll be just us, okay? No more stupid cheerleader, nerd dynamic. We’ll just be us.”
Hazel’s lip quivered as she nodded.
You muttered a “c’mere” as you pulled her into your chest. Patting her hair down, you rocked her from side to side.
“I’m yours, Hazel. No one else’s.”
And in that moment she knew that everything would turn out okay.

It was a regular fall day, the wind bitter and cold against Hazel's face. Her brunette locks swept back and forth against her forehead, sometimes making her bring her hand up to move it out the way just so she could see. PJ and Josie walked beside her, chatting about something that Hazel wasn't very focused on. She occasionally sniffed as the cold got to her nose. She rubbed it and placed her hands back into her coat pockets. PJ had stopped infront of a small shop. The smell of coffee and fresh pastries intoxicated Hazel's cold nose and made it feel all warm.
"Okay we gotta go in here bro." PJ says, her face lighting up as she speaks. She looks back towards Josie and Hazel with the same smile. She then steps forward and opens the shop door, setting off the small bell at the top to alert the baristas that someone has come in. Hazel and Josie walk in behind PJ and sit down at a small table. The shop is decorated head to toe in fake vines (at least that's what Hazel thinks) and posters with astrology facts and constellations on them. Josie picks up the menu in the middle of the table and scans through before handing it to PJ. She looks up and down the sheet of paper and passes it to Hazel. Hazel grimaces as she looks at the paper. She doesn't particularly drink coffee and the teas sound weird. But PJ and Josie don't know that. She finds what she wants and keeps it in mind.
"Who's gonna order it then?" Josie perks up after a while. PJ looks at Hazel and so does Josie. Hazel stutters and raises her hands in the air in defence.
"W-What?? No. I'm not doing it." PJ and Josie look at her before pushing her towards the counter. She fiddles with her rings and looks up to meet your eyes. She swears she's never seen eyes like yours. The way they twinkle in the fairy lights makes her stomach flip.
"Hey, Welcome! What can I get you?" You smile. Hazel can feel a lump forming in her throat. You've somehow stumped her. You frown and look at her with a look of concern.
"Hey, take your time. No rush." You reassure her, even though she knows exactly what to order, she just can't seem to get her words out. She looks around before sighing and looking down at her beat-up converse.
"C-Can I get a medium iced latte with normal milk and uh-" Hazel shallows before continuing.
"A-And a pumpkin cream cold brew... and uh a normal iced coffee please." Hazel finishes, swallowing hard when you smile and nod at her. You type something into your machine before turning back to her. You can't help but notice her nervous state and slightly frown before she looks up at you.
"That'll be $14.99! Will you paying cash or card today?" You smile again, tapping your hands against the counter happily. Hazel quickly gets out her card, before tapping it against the card reader. You nod as it beeps to let you know its gone through. She's about to walk away as you pipe up,
"And I'll need a name for the drinks please." You say, beaming a grin at her. She stands at the counter, frozen to her spot. How could she forget her name? Just say it!
"H-Hazel. Just Hazel." She clarifies, nodding as she watches you write on cups before walking away to make the drinks. Hazel sits backs down next to PJ and Josie, her shoulders still tensed up.
"Ooohhh! Someone likes the barista!!" PJ speaks up, wiggling her eyebrows at Hazel and a grin spreads across her face. Josie chuckles at PJ and looks back at Hazel. She seems to be staring at you, working your magic on the drinks. You're chatting to your co-worker, laughing at what she just said and smiling widely. You place all drinks at the end of the counter and place straws into them.
"Drinks for Hazel?" You stand on your tip-toes to see if you can spot Hazel's face. When your eyes land on her, you wave and usher her on up to the counter.
"Dude go!" Josie pushes her towards you and you meet her by the counter once again. You smile and hand her the drinks. Hazel picks up all the drinks and struggles to hold all of them in her own two hands, making you wince when she almost drops one of them.
"Here, take a tray love." You say, grabbing her a tray and taking the drinks from her hand and placing the drinks on it. Your hands graze hers and she can swear the her heart is about to beat out of her chest. She again stares at your face, analysing your freckles and skin. It's almost like she's mesmerised by you. You snap her out of her trance by talking.
"Enjoy your drinks!" You smile at her before walking off to your co-worker. Hazel picks up the tray and walks stiffly back to the table. She sits down, grabs her drink and looks down at the receipt. Something is scribbled in black pen.
"See you soon, Just Hazel??" And its signed off by your name and number. Hazel can feel your eyes in the back of her skull and she smiles down at the receipt before shoving it in her pocket.
Maybe she doesn't hate coffee that much.

“Y/n!” Josie called as she practically ran across the quad to reach you, PJ following behind her.
Josie looked ecstatic, which could only mean one thing. She had set you up on yet another blind date. At first you thought it was sweet that your friends had wanted you to get with someone, especially after your continuous complaints about being single, but now you were just tired of it. None of the dates were successful, and after last week's one with that air-headed jock, you didn’t want any part of PJ and Josie’s “matchmaking skills”.
You forced a smile as Josie and PJ reached you, trying not to show how fed up you were with all of this. “Hey guys,” you said, acting as if you didn’t already know what they were up to.
Josie sat down beside you on the bench, trying to catch her breath from having run over to you. “So, do we have news for you!” Josie finally said, grinning excitedly.
Josie opened her mouth to continue speaking, only to be immediately cut off by PJ. “Josie got you another date. And hopefully this one’ll actually work out so you’ll finally stop bitching about being single.”
“You do that too, y’know,” you shot back, irked by PJ’s abrasive personality.
She just grinned in response. “Yeah, but it’s not annoying when I do it.”
“Anyways…” Josie cut in, trying to get the conversation back on topic. “You have a date tonight at 8pm. Her name is Lacy, she’s a science major, and I showed her your picture and she thinks you’re cute.”
“No thanks,” you huffed, not even trying to disguise your disinterest.
Josie and PJ looked baffled by your response, not understanding why you would shut this down.
“No thanks?” PJ asked, scoffing as she shoved your shoulder. “Is this about that last date we sent you on? I swear, I didn’t know he was so… dull. That one’s on Josie. But you need to go, Lacy’s interested and you need to not be single any more.”
“Yeah, I really should’ve known better than to set you up with a guy named Chad. But Lacy’s really great, I think you’d like her,” Josie said, sounding much less forceful than PJ.
You shook your head, dismissing both of their points. “I get it, and I’m sure Lacy’s nice, but I just can’t keep doing these blind date things. This is like the fifth one. And besides… I’m kinda interested in someone else.”
“Wait, seriously? So you’re telling me that we wasted all of that time trying to set you up with people, and you like someone else?!” PJ grumbled, annoyed at you despite having had little to no part in the actual setting you up with someone part of things.
“Why didn’t you tell us? We could’ve helped you try to get with them,” Josie said, a bit disappointed about things, but not nearly as upset as PJ.
You sighed, looking at the ground as you fiddled with your necklace. “Because, it’s never gonna happen. She’d never be interested in me. And I really do appreciate you guys trying to set me up with someone, but I just want Hazel.”
Unbeknownst to the three of you, Hazel was heading over to you guys, completely unaware of the topic of discussion, which just so happened to transition to her. But as she walked over, she did manage to catch the last thing you said. Her eyes widened and she felt her heart flutter in her chest. Hazel would be lying if she said she didn’t have a major crush on you. One that she’s been harboring since high school. And to hear you say that you liked her back… that was just about the best thing that ever could’ve happened to her.
“Oh… Hazel! Hey…” PJ said awkwardly, finally noticing the girl’s presence.
You immediately tensed up and felt your face grow hot. Your mind raced in panic, hoping and praying that Hazel didn’t just hear what you had said.
“Hey guys! Whatcha talking about?” Hazel asked, sitting down on the other side of the bench, sandwiching you between her and Josie.
“Science homework!” “Clothes!” Josie and PJ blurted out at the same time.
You felt yourself growing increasingly nervous, especially with Hazel sitting so close to you, and you became desperate for an out. So you took what Josie said and ran with it.
“Speaking of science homework, I better get going. I have a paper I have to finish. Bye!” you rambled, hurriedly grabbing your things before bolting off in the direction of your dorm room, leaving your friends behind.
“Well that was weird…” Hazel said.
PJ shrugged, “You know y/n. They’re always like that. Really weird.”
“Anyways, while we’re talking about y/n, I need your guys’ help with something…”
~
You grumbled as you trudged over to your door, the incessant knocking driving you mad. You threw open the door, ready to rip whoever was on the other side a new one, when you came face to face with Josie, who had that same ecstatic look on her face that always appeared when she had secured you another date.
“No! I’m not going on another blind date! I’m sure Lacy’s great, but I told you that-”
“It’s not with Lacy,” Josie said, cutting you off.
You raised an eyebrow in confusion. “I thought you were setting me up with Lacy tonight?”
Josie waved her hands dismissively, “Yeah, I was. But… now it’s with someone else. Just trust me, okay?”
“I already told you-”
“I know. But please, just this last one. And then I’ll never bring it up again. I promise.”
You contemplated this for a moment. On one hand, you really didn’t want to go on another blind date. But on the other hand, you really did want Josie and PJ to stop bothering you with all of this. What was the harm of spending one more night on a horrible date to finally get Josie and PJ to leave this alone?
You sighed, giving in. “Alright, fine. But this is the last one.”
“Great!” Josie said, grabbing your hand and all but dragging you out of your room.
“Josie, what are you doing?”
“Taking you to your date.”
“What?! Now?! I look horrible! Don’t you at least want me to attempt to have a successful date?”
“It’s fine! And besides, you look great! You always do. So stop complaining, and have fun!” she replied, pushing you towards an open door before you could even process whose room it was.
“Wait-” you said, turning around to talk to Josie, only to have the door slammed shut, leaving you alone in some rando’s dorm room.
“Great,” you mumbled under your breath, turning around to see who you were stuck with for the next hour or so, only to see Hazel standing there, smiling awkwardly.
“Hi…” she said, taking a step towards you.
“Hazel? You’re who Josie set me up with?”
She nodded. “Yeah. But only because I asked her to. I… I kinda overheard you in the quad today.”
You felt your stomach sink at her words. “...You did?”
“Mhm. And I was going to say something to you, but I wasn’t like entirely sure that it was me you were talking about cause I don’t know how many other Hazels are here. So I asked PJ and Josie to help me because I didn’t want to embarrass myself.”
You smiled at her words, feeling a tiny bit less nervous. “So I guess it’s safe to assume that you like me too?”
Hazel laughed softly as she nodded again. “Yep. I’ve actually liked you since high school…”
“Wait, really?”
“Yeah. Is that bad…?”
You quickly shook your head, finally walking over to her. “No! It’s just… I’ve liked you since high school too. God, we’re such idiots.”
Hazel smiled. “We really are.”
“So… what did you have planned for our date?”
“I thought we could maybe watch a movie? I asked Josie what your favorite one was. If that’s okay with you…?”
You nodded excitedly, sitting down on Hazel’s bed, Hazel quickly following suit. “Definitely, but only if we watch your favorite movie too.”
Hazel smiled, leaning her head against your shoulder. “I’d love that.”

Look At Me
Hazel Callahan x Reader (fluff)
➸ summary: reader can’t seem to keep their eyes on hazel, too flustered to ever keep eye contact. one day hazel has had enough
➸ warnings/notes: making out, that’s about it
➸ requested?: yes! ↴
- maybe hazel with reader whos crushing on her and gets really shy around her?? like fiddling with their fingers and avoiding eye contact - reader being aloof towards hazel, to the point that calm, soft, sweet Hazel pins her to the wall, annoyed @fictionalcharacterspecialist
word count: 1.4k
————————
YOU HAD BEEN friends with Hazel for a while now. To you, she was perfect. How couldn’t she be?
She was there for you when you took your first punch, cleaning you up and offering advice. She supported you when you found out that your ex was cheating on you, claiming that ‘they were an idiot for not seeing how amazing you were. Hazel was the most gentle soul you knew.
You had developed a crush on Hazel; a huge, massive crush. While you couldn’t quite pinpoint when the switch was, you knew why it happened.
And who would blame you? The only problem now was that you couldn’t seem to talk to her properly anymore.
Now that you were aware of your feelings towards her, every interaction felt like you were walking on eggshells. Did you say something weird? Was your hair messy? Did your breath smell? These were all thoughts that plagued your mind when Hazel was around.
Curse whoever made her and decided she had to have the most beautiful face in the world. You couldn’t even look her in the eyes without wanting to melt into a quivering pool of anxiety.
Hazel had begun to suspect that something was going on yet she couldn’t for the life of her figure it out. She tried interrogating you on multiple occasions
Is something going on at home? No.
Are you stressed about an exam? No.
What’s wrong? Nothing.
Every single problem that Hazel had concocted in her mind had come to a dead end. Everything she asked, you shut down immediately and Hazel had no clue what was wrong with you. Now she was left with nothing to console her on why you were acting so strange.
She has been becoming increasingly frustrated. She just wanted her friend back. Internally, she had been battling her thoughts. Maybe you were trying to distance yourself from her and she was just too stupid to realize.
No. It couldn’t be.
So this is what she set out to uncover.
Was she just too in her own head, or did you really and truly not want to be friends anymore? The thought alone made her heart clench.
Making her way across the football field, she crawled under the bleachers where she knew you’d be. You tended to go there when you were feeling down because you knew nobody would come bother you. Well, nobody except for Hazel.
Her eyes landed on your curled up figure, your knees tucked to your chest. You were deep in thought as you plucked at the fake grass under your feet.
“Hey,” she said, pulling you from your imagination.
Briskly standing up, you straightened out immediately. “Hazel! What are you doing here?”
She sighed as she gripped her bag strap tighter. What were you so afraid of? Why could she not get any information from you? She just wanted to help, whatever the issue was.
“Me? What are you doing here,” she said, walking further up to meet you.
You backed up, your spine hitting the wall behind you. Why did she have to get so close? Your heart threatened to thump right out of your chest. Her hands were in her pockets, shoes kicking at the minuscule pebbles on the ground.
God, she was so cute.
“You’ve been avoiding me,” she said plainly. “What’s going on with you?”
Closing your eyes, you bowed your head down. She was too intuitive - she always knew when something was bothering you. Usually you would be glad for this superpower of hers but right now you wished you could crawl in a hole and hide forever.
You looked down at your fingernails, picking at the skin around them. “What do you mean?”
“That!” she exploded, gesturing to your entire body. “You can’t even look me in the eyes!”
Her outburst shocked you. You had never heard Hazel get mad, much less raise her voice. It made you slightly nervous; but you couldn’t blame her for being angry. You had kind of shut her out for the past few days.
“I can’t- I don’t wanna do this right now,” you said as you pushed off the wall. Feet beginning to move away from her, you were suddenly stopped in your tracks.
Enough was enough, and Hazel was going to get answers.
She grabbed you by the hips, pushing you up against the wall furiously. Your back was flush against the bricks, your entire body ablaze with the feeling of her fingertips digging into your sides. She didn’t let go of you as she kept you in place, her eyes wildly searching your face for an answer. For anything to explain why you had been acting the way you were.
You tried pushing off the stone yet again, but her grasp on you was too strong. Quite literally, you were stuck in place.
Not only had your heart rate picked up, but your breathing became erratic. An intense heat had pooled in your stomach and you couldn’t get rid of the butterflies that this position gave you. Her face was so close, if her hands moved up an inch she would be touching the bare skin on your waist. If she moved just… a little closer you would feel the ghost of her lips on yours.
“Hazel,” you whispered, but it came out as more of a groan.
You clenched your eyes shut as you tried to calm down. Hazel’s nails dug into the loops on your jeans as she shook your torso gently.
“Look at me. Please,” she begged. “What did I do wrong?”
Slowly but surely, you opened your eyelids. There she was, bright as day, her gorgeous plump lips staring tauntingly at your face. Her cheeks were colored a light pink from what you presumed to be the heat, but in reality she was just as nervous as you were.
“Nothing. I promise.”
Her head was thrown back as she scoffed at the stairs above her. Hands never leaving your side, she leaned her face closer to yours, her breath fanning your face lightly.
“I’m gonna ask one more time. What’s wrong?” she said, nostrils flaring.
You tried not to let your breath hitch in your throat at the tone she was using. You never thought she could be any hotter, but here she was, pissed off, and you were a blushing mess. Something about the way she was demanding for an answer got you hot and bothered.
“You… I just-“ you couldn’t get your words out.
Hazel said nothing, merely caressing the side of your thigh with her fingers that were now back on your hipbones. She waited for you to continue.
“You’re really hot when you’re angry.”
It was all that managed to come out. You wanted to tell her how she made you feel, how her smile could make you feel happy on your worst days, how her hugs were your favorite thing in the world. How you were gradually falling more and more in love with her each day.
But you couldn’t. All you could think about was having your hands on her - or how good it would feel to have her mouth on your neck, your lips, everywhere.
In an instant, her hands tugged you into her chest, arms trailing up to wrap around your waist as her lips came crashing onto yours.
You held onto her shoulders, too shocked to do anything else. Yet Hazel couldn’t keep her hands off of you. She traveled from your hips, to your waist, to your lower back as she tried to bring herself as close to you as possible.
Fingernails digging into her jacket, you melted into the kiss quickly. This was better than you could’ve hoped. Her lips were soft and gentle compared to how feverishly she was kissing you. Her hair tickled your eyebrows, and you furrowed them as the kiss deepened, her head tilting to the side for better access.
When her tongue swiftly swiped across your bottom lip you let out an involuntary whine, granting her entrance. She took the opportunity to press her tongue against yours, not even taking a second to breathe. You were panting against each other’s open mouths as you tried to get as much of each other as possible.
It felt like you had been drugged - you were so high on the feeling of her against you that you barely noticed when she pulled away. Her right hand rested on your lower back as she positioned her chest against yours, her head falling on top of your shoulder.
You leaned your head back onto the wall as you attempted to get some air back into your lungs.
“Shit. I should get angry more often,” she said.
And you couldn’t agree more.

You stood outside Hazel’s dorm, anxiously twiddling with your necklace, as you debated whether or not to knock. It was almost three in the morning, and you really didn’t want to bother her; you just couldn’t stand to stay in your dorm anymore, not with your roommate and her boyfriend currently going at it like rabbits. And you knew what would happen if you asked Hazel to spend the night. She would let you, without hesitation, and would probably even give you her bed and opt to sleep on the floor instead. Because that’s the kind of friend she was, and you loved her for it.
Still, you couldn’t help but feel like you were taking advantage of her kindness. She was such a good person, always helping others and brightening everyone’s day. And you just couldn't help but feel guilty, having almost nothing to offer her in return. You’d tried to voice this to her multiple times, but she always brushed it off, saying she liked being nice and didn’t expect anything in return for it. If only you were able to accept that.
Shoving your nerves aside, you gently knocked on the door, knowing that your only alternative would be sleeping in your own bed and being forced to listen to your roommate’s activities. Before your fist could even leave the door, Hazel opened it, tired eyes gazing back at your own. Upon noticing that it was you at her door, Hazel suddenly seemed a lot more awake, her bright blue eyes wide as she looked at you.
“Hey. I’m really sorry to wake you,” you said, an awkward half smile on your face.
Hazel quickly shook her head, pushing the door open a bit more and taking a small step towards you. “You didn’t wake me! I- uh… couldn’t sleep,” Hazel replied, seeming almost embarrassed to admit that. “What’s up?”
“Could I possibly spend the night here? My roommate and her boyfriend are at it again and I can’t stomach listening to that any longer.”
Hazel smiled empathtically and stepped aside, giving you the space to enter. “I know what that’s like. Back in highschool, my mom and the quarterback were at it almost every night.” Hazel’s eyes went wide at her own words, regretting what she had said almost immediately after the words left her mouth.
“That sounds like hell,” you grimaced, stepping inside and standing there awkwardly as Hazel shut the door behind you.
“So… you can take my bed. I’ll just sleep on the floor,” Hazel said, walking over to her bed to grab a pillow.
You sighed, you knew this would happen. You didn’t want to banish her to the floor in her own dorm just because you couldn’t sleep in yours. “No, I’ll take the floor. It’s your room, you should sleep in your bed.”
“Well you’re the guest. You should get the bed,” Hazel replied, a smile growing on her face.
You shook your head, smiling in return as something shifted in the atmosphere between you two. “I am not a guest. I’m an inconvenience at best. I’m not gonna let you sleep on the floor.”
“And I’m not gonna let you sleep on the floor.”
You and Hazel stood there for a moment, lost in thought and just looking at each other, neither one knowing what to say next, until you brought it upon yourself to break the silence.
“We could always just share the bed…?” you offered, a twinge of anxiety in your voice as you feared her rejecting your completely platonic suggestion.
Yet despite your beliefs, Hazel seemed to perk up at the idea, the thought of being able to be that close to you making her stomach erupt into butterflies.
“I wouldn’t mind that. But my bed’s kinda small, we’d have to be pretty close.”
You smiled, your own stomach growing fluttery. “I don’t mind.”
Hazel climbed into her bed, pulling the blanket back far enough so you could climb in too. Placing your backpack down, you walked over and got in bed beside her, laying right on the edge of the mattress and facing away from her, almost as if you were too scared to touch her or even look at her. But you could practically feel the heat radiating from her body, and your head went dizzy from the feeling. You pulled the blanket over yourself and tried to fall asleep, which was proving to be very difficult when you were also focusing on not falling off the bed.
“You’re gonna fall off the bed,” Hazel said, seemingly aware of your internal struggle. You sighed, not knowing what to say, when you felt an arm being thrown over your waist. “Just- c’mere,” Hazel muttered, pulling you back into her chest with ease and keeping her arm draped over your waist to hold you in place.
Your breath hitched at the feeling. You always forgot just how strong Hazel was, her ability to practically throw you around like a ragdoll igniting something within you. You desperately wanted to sleep, but how could you when the girl you were secretly madly in love with was basically spooning you? It was almost too much to take.
“You alright? You’re breathing pretty fast,” Hazel mumbled, her face buried against your shoulder as she held you in her grip.
You nodded. “Mhm. I’m fine.”
“You sure…?”
Hazel’s tone almost sounded teasing. Was she flirting with you? No, that’s insane. Why would she be flirting with you? It’s not like she felt the same. Unless… She was holding you pretty close, and her grip on you didn’t feel all that friend-like… You forced your mind to quiet, not wanting to let your thoughts run wild and jump to conclusions that didn’t exist.
“Yep. I- I’m sure.”
Fuck. Of course you just had to stutter. Just great.
“Look at me,” Hazel asked, her grip on your loosening so you could turn around.
“No thanks. I think I’m good facing this way.”
Hazel sighed and wrapped her arm around your waist before forcibly turning you over to face her. You gasped softly at the unexpected movement, shocked that she would just do that.
“I thought I could do this, but I can’t. I just… I can’t keep doing this. I can’t keep hiding this from you,” Hazel whispered, her blue eyes piercing into yours.
“Hazel… what are you talking about?”
Hazel took a deep breath, never once looking away from you. “I-... I’m in love with you. And I never would’ve said anything, but I could just feel you breathing faster when I held you and you seemed so much more nervous than usual, and I-... I just need to know if you feel the same.”
Your eyes widened as you took in your words. Was this really happening? It was three in the morning, your brain could’ve been playing a trick on you. But the earnest look on Hazel’s face, her eyes flitting over your face as she desperately waited for a response. As unbelievable as it all felt, something just felt so… real. You brought your hand up to brush some hair away from her eyes and you smiled softly at her.
“I’m in love with you, too. I have been for so long. I just… I never thought you could feel the same.”
Hazel smiled brightly at your words, and suddenly her lips were on yours. And everything just felt… right. It was like you had been seeing the whole world in black and white, and she taught you how to see color. Everything just made sense when you were with her. You kissed her back, your hand coming up to rest against her cheek as you tried to pour all your feelings into your movements.
Reluctantly pulling away for air, you pressed your forehead against hers, just savoring the closeness between you.
“Remind me to thank my roommate for her insanely high libido.”
Hazel couldn’t help but giggle at your words, wrapping her arms around you and pulling you close once more.
