Week 11
The title of chapter 7 is Brand Culture. This chapter discusses that and more. This chapter starts off by describing the history of brand culture, from the assembly line to modern "brand development" agencies. We then learn the definition of brands; entities that acquire value through consumer experience. The idea of consumer citizenship is introduced and described as the ways that humans' sense of national and community belonging can increase due to participation in brand culture. Branding is emphasized and on every single thing we eat, unless grown in a personal garden or collected through hunting. The abundance of data marketing (taking information from your mobile devices or computers, and placing ads related to the same activity all over your feed) is growing all around us. We see how if someone is to search a product on the web, they have a high chance of receiving emails regarding that product or just see that product more prevalently. Consumerism is defined and the history of the rise in US and european societies. Brand ideoligies are expanded on and their ties to desire. The major topic of culture jamming instigated opposing consumerism, cooperate control of the economy, and wealth concentration.
This chapter sticks out to me in the sense of data marketing. Every single time I get on my phone, there is always an ad that is displayed that either relates to a problem I've had or a product I've discussed or researched. This type of marketing is scary because, although we don't physically have a person watching what we do and sending ads to our specific phones, we have data that acts as a brain describing you and all you've done on your device. This data can show what you like, don't like, and never allows for any transparency. Instead of broader ads, we have ads specially designed for us... If that's not scary there's something wrong... This data collected can almost seem invasive of privacy and lacks integrity of personal products and devices. {Anti-Terrorism Bill (C-51)}

(This picture depicts culture jamming by emphasizing the price of their cheap to make coffees and twists the advertisement to mean something completely different.)

Rumination week 11
During this week we discussed chapter 7 in our book about brand culture. Personally I thought it was interesting to really see how advertisements have changed due to technology advancing. In today's time technology has come so far and we see it advancing more each year. Social media is another one of those things that has technology for companies to track you through what is called "cookies". I'm sure many of you have seen it when you have clicked onto a website or social media account. There has also been numerous times where I have felt like my phone has been "listening" to me. For example, I mention that I would like a pair of shoes from Nike or something like that and I see the shoes I had previously talked about it and see an ad pop up on my phone on a social media outlet. In today's world everything is being advertised or eventually will be advertised on any platform you can think of.

Week 11 Rumination
This week we discussed chapter 7 brand cultures. Brand culture is the “traditional” forms of culture mediated through consumer/brand culture. This can include family, religion, community, nation, etc. An entity that acquires value through consumer experience is defined as a brand. Consumers engage in a brand’s culture as a lifestyle or a way of living when brands operate as a culture. The textbook states, “The brand is not just the look and feel… It is a broad cultural form through which identity and belief are experienced. Think of the brand Savage x Fenty by Rihanna. Consumers choose to participate in their culture because of what the brand stands for and who the owner is. This brand is known for its broad inclusivity across several sizes and skin tones. Brands allow a person to express their identity through purchasing their goods. This loyalty to a brand that you like can cause Brand attachment. A great example of brand attachment is Apple. Several people continuously buy the new Iphone because they refuse to switch to Android or Samsung. Although these consumers may sometimes critique the brand they still would not change from using these Apple products. Another example could be Jordans the shoe. There are several other sneaker brands and thousands of other shoes, but consumers have attached themselves with this particular brand. I found myself purchasing nothing but Jordans for several years because I liked the shoes and attached myself with the brand. With every new pair or purchase I was given an experience that I enjoyed. Similar to several others, I see fake jordans on several websites and social media accounts. These “dupes” are sometimes very similar to the original product, so much so that the average person may not recognize a difference if I were to purchase one. However, my loyalty and attachment to this brand deters me from purchasing these knock off versions.

I keep thinking about Lewis' review of The Hobbit, because he claimed that the main thing contemporary reviewers compared it to was Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Was fantasy in that poor of a state that Alice was the closest thing they could think of? Comparing that chaotic fever dream to Tolkien's intricately crafted world? Lewis does specify that the comparison is that both books are by an "Oxford professor at play", but they're otherwise so different that putting the two in the same category baffles me.

i was worried i was going to hate how worf and jadzia got together what with jadzia constantly being the object of desire, in a traditional read of the word, of so many male characters that it was reaching parody by the end of season 2, but the actual story they wrote? grade-a, rom-com, cute. screwball adorable. especially this exact moment early in the episode:

i'm glad quackity is becoming more involved in running the actual server, and i think he's handling the situation as well as he can. but it sucks a lot that he wasn't ALREADY highly involved in how his passion project was run and how his money was spent. he is very young, he is a busy law student and content creator, he is intensely private. this was a tough lesson for him on responsibility.
i think those of us who've been watching since the beginning aren't super surprised by how little he knew about things behind the scenes. his character wasn't even allowed to /op because he wanted to be on equal footing with the other players. he constantly mentioned how he "doesn't know what's going to happen today" during events when other members would ask questions. he doesn't seem to know shit about the mods they've chosen or how the custom game mechanics work. he's doesn't play on the server much at all!
so seeing dream stans and other mcyt fans huff and puff about how quackity is lying and obviously knew about everything bad going on is odd. like this man really doesn't know shit about how his server is run or what happens on it. THAT'S a fair thing to criticize and something i agree is irresponsible. it's not fair to claim he's lying about not knowing things when every indication for the last year has pointed viewers in that direction. he's really been super hands off about everything except adding new languages, which is kind of his whole focus.
anyway kudos to the french admins and aypierre for speaking up and sparking workplace change. very on brand for the french LOL
also reminder to any younger viewers who are like REAAAALLY invested in qsmp to stop catastrophizing. it'll be alright. it's literally just minecraft, no one is in any danger.

Jason grew up being a biter.
As a kid on the streets of Gotham there's not much you can do to keep yourself safe against other kids and adults who are bigger than you, stabbing or hitting them can only go so much, and that's when Jason started biting people.
That lady from the children centre who most definitely sold of children for the highest bidder? Biten on the hand.
Some jack¹ tried something with him? Jason's teeth locked on his shoulder until it drew blood and he managed to run while the guy was distracted.
After being adopted, Bruce discouraged it, mostly because he had biten Poison Ivy and had a hard time dealing with an allergy on his gums, but more often than not, Jason would take the chance and nibble a little bit on the rogues, like a feral racoon.
After his debut as Red Hood, Jason's habit of biting people had seemingly vanished, it was still there he just had a helmet restricting his biter nature. When he changed his get up to the domino and detachable mouth piece, it was a dark day for the rogues, Robin II, the biter was back in the game.
It takes him two weeks before he actually bites someone and takes a good chunk out of Bane's arm accidentally, his bite force way stronger than when he was a child, the doctors have to suture it back together and about an inch of Bane's tattoo is missing, probably somewhere on the sewers after the Red Hood spit the skin out.
