Rec: I can't think of many other fics that have quite so thoroughly sold me on a pairing. which it achieved by really selling--in epistolary format no less!--the potential for greatness, and then the tragedy of great men torn apart. This fic is a heartache from start to finish and every time I finish it I have to go stare into space for a bit.

Just in time for Halloween, I’ve noticed all my absolute favorite OTPs fit one oddly-specific trope:

Strong-willed, compassionate good witch meets goofy (but not dim-witted), kind-hearted guy who loves his witch more than he ever thought possible.

(My Personal) Trope Originator:

Cassie Nightingale and Sam Radford from Hallmark Channel’s Good Witch

If I try to describe the incredible friends-first dynamic of these two I’d be here all day. Just do yourself a favor and watch. I do recommend starting with the very first The Good Witch movie for a proper introduction to all characters involved. If you like Jake Russell there’s a whole series of movies for you. (Not that I don’t like Jake. He’s just no Sam Radford.)

I say “recently” with some irony, as these two are relics by today’s standards. But trust me there’s plenty of shipping to be had! And yes, that IS Angela Lansbury, playing a witch in a Disney movie! As for Bewitched, honestly I always thought Darrin was a jerk especially concerning Samantha’s witchcraft, but I watched some episodes a few months ago and now I Get It.

I started thinking about where all this came from and it hit me:

Okay hear me out. I know Monica isn’t a witch (then again name one thing beyond her power). But the dynamic is the same and Friends was a formative show for me. I started watching when they were first airing season seven - yes I’m old, what’s it to you?

Talk about formative. During elementary school this was my absolute favorite (though we might also need to discuss Alex and Ray from The Secret World of Alex Mack). I wouldn’t say I was actively shipping Harvey and Sabrina but I loved the show and I’m sure it seeped into my psyche.

This post doubles as a list of Halloween-y type things to watch (Friends did eventually do a Halloween episode), so I hope you obsess over these ships as much as I have.

A sniffle.

Then a cough.

Then you hacking up a lung behind cell block c while trying to sweep the hallway like some victorian chimney orphan, hunched and wheezing into the broomstick like it wronged you personally.

“Jesus Christ,” Daryl mutters when he finds you for the third time that morning. “What the hell are ya doin’?”

“I’m helping… or can you not use your eyes to see anymore..” you croak, defiantly upright despite your sweat slick forehead and three layers of clothes you’re now regretting. “People are busy. I’m fine.”

“You’re burnin’ up.”

“I’m not—”

He walks over and places the back of his hand to your forehead before you can finish the sentence. You swat at him halfheartedly.

“Don’t,” you whine.

“You’re cookin’ like a goddamn stew,” he mutters, glaring like the fever personally offended him. “That’s it. Go. Bed. Now.”

“I don’t need to go to bed.”

He raises an eyebrow. “Uh huh. That why ya just tried to sweep the same three feet of hallway for ten minutes?”

You glance at the ground. It is… in fact, very clean.

“Coincidence,” you grumble.

“Yeah, ‘cause bein’ dizzy as hell’s real helpful.” He snatches the broom from your hand. “Go lay down ‘fore I carry ya there.”

“You wouldn’t.”

He gives you a flat look. “Don’t test me.”

You shuffle back toward the cellblock with the dramatic flare of someone being banished from the kingdom. He follows behind, muttering under his breath the whole way.

“Stubborn ass… sick as shit… mopin’ around like a damn walker…”

You ignore him. Until he throws his arm gently across your back when you wobble on the last step. Then you lean into him. A little. Just for balance.

He doesn’t say anything, but he doesn’t move his arm either.

Fifteen minutes later, you’re in bed under three blankets, sipping water, being glared at like you’re on death row.

“I could’ve totally fixed that wiring in the rec room,” you mumble.

“You couldn’t even sit upright for five minutes.”

“You’re dramatic.”

“I ain’t the one who passed out on the table tryin’ to peel potatoes.”

You scowl. He smirks.

“Not funny.”

“Kinda funny.”

Daryl sits at your bedside, one hand picking at the label of the water bottle he brought, the other resting near your pillow. You know he won’t say it outright, but you can see the worry all over him — that twitch in his jaw, the occasional check of your temperature, the quiet sigh when you close your eyes for too long.

You peek over at him. “You gonna hover all day?”

“Yeah.”

Your smile grows. “Weirdo.”

He shrugs, not even bothering to deny it. “Ain’t leavin’ you like this. Not when you’re sick ‘n stupid.”

You reach out and flick his wrist. “I’m not stupid, I’m determined.”

“Same thing.”

“Daryl.”

He finally looks at you, soft but tired. “Ya scared me, alright? Was out there lookin’ for you all damn morning. Thought maybe someone got in. Turns out, you were out back tryin’ to scrape mildew off the damn water barrel.”

“…It was really gross mildew.”

He lets out a half laugh, half growl. “You’re impossible.”

You grin. “Still love me though.”

His expression softens in that way it always does with you — like he’s melting around the edges, even when he’s trying to keep the hard shell on.

“Yeah,” he mutters, brushing a knuckle over your fever warm cheek. “I do.”

Later, he tucks you in a little tighter when you start to shiver.

You fall asleep to the sound of him sharpening his knife nearby, muttering, “Ain’t doin’ this sick bullshit again,” under his breath.

But when you wake up, he’s still there, sitting on the floor, leaning against your bedframe, fast asleep with one hand wrapped loosely around yours.

I love the adrenaline and potential angst within the Auror partners trope as much as the next guy, but we can all agree that our mental health improves 10 times when we see Harry leaving the Ministry, embracing other possibilities and making his own destiny. I don’t see why first-years can’t have their own. I think I’ll bully Father into getting me one, and I’ll smuggle it in somehow.” Draco smiled to himself, but it faded when the boy didn’t so much as sniff at his joke. Maybe how one might smuggle a broomstick went over his head. “Have you got your own broom?” Draco asked. “No.” “Play Quidditch at all?” “No.” The boy sounded a little terse. “I do,” Draco said. “Father says it’s a crime if I’m not picked to play for my house, and I must say, I agree. Happy Birthday, Harry!

Sleeping Beauty was one of my favorite movies as a kid. So, of course when I saw this anon ask on @sitp-recs dash, I knew I HAD to write this little birthday blurb

"Is it supposed to look so – "

"So what?" Draco snapped, whipping his head to his left to arch a sharp brow at Ron.

Ron floundered under the attention. "So, um, uh – "

"What Ron means to say," interjected Hermione, stepping forward with a gentle hand on Draco's shoulder and a pointed look towards her husband. "Is that it has a lot of character. Isn't that right, Ronald?"

Draco's head swiveled back towards his ginger critic to find him frantically nodding, his head moving up and down wildly as if on a hinge.

Pursing his lips, Draco turned back towards his creation. "I'll admit. It's not exactly what I'd originally had in mind."

And as if Draco's words were the panacea to his sudden – and welcome – silence, Ron stepped up and pointed at the cake. "So, it's not meant to be all crooked like that?"

"No," Draco said tersely.

"Have you got it stuck like that with a Stasis Charm?"

"Yes. It was either that or prop it up with a bloody broomstick. I haven't the time to bake another."

"Bake?" cried Ron. "You made this yourself?"

"Yes. Is that so hard to believe?"

"No," Ron snorted.

Draco turned and glared at him, but Hermione attached herself to his upper-arm with both hands and a cry of, "Oh, I think it's lovely, Draco."

And almost as one, the three of them turned towards the cake – its form leaning more and more the farther removed from the base tier it went. Icing in Gryffindor colors – Draco swore a part of himself died with each layer – dripped out from between the layers and down the side. All of it culminated with the heart made of cherries on the top.

Chewing on his bottom lip, Draco started to ask, "Do you think – "

"I'm sure Harry will love it. It's the thought that counts."

"That's not what I was going to ask, Hermione."

"Oh?" Her brown eyes went wide, and she blinked owlishly at him before turning back to the cake, valiantly ignoring the holes Draco bored into the side of her face.

"What's everyone looking at?"

"Harry!" Ron shrieked, his voice cracking up the octave.

Draco whirled around and stepped towards the newly arrived Harry, bracing his hands on either side of Harry's chest.

"What are you doing here?" he asked, laughing sweetly (if not a bit madly). "You weren't supposed to be back for another hour."

"I left early. I wanted to see you." Harry's smile lit up his face, and Draco couldn't help but mirror it as Harry leaned in for a quick kiss.

"What's this then?" he asked, wrapping an arm around Draco's waist and looking expectantly at Hermione and Ron.

They'd closed the space where Draco used to be and were body blocking Harry from the cake, casting quick glances towards Draco.

"Go ahead and show him," Draco sighed, flinging an arm uselessly in the air. "We can't hide it from him forever."

"Hide what?"

Draco gestured to the cake wordlessly, Hermione and Ron parting like a wave, the cake appearing between them like a giant, red-and-gold eyesore.

"What's this?" Harry asked, intense green eyes focused on Draco.

"It's supposed to be a birthday cake," he groaned.

Harry only closed his eyes, the corners of his lips tilting up. "I know that."

He tugged Draco closer. "Did you make this for me?"

"Yes," Draco whispered, suddenly ashamed. He should have just taken Molly's help when she'd offered it.

"So what's wrong?"

"Well, it's awful. I know you're blind, but surely even you can see that."

Harry wore that expression he always did when he wanted to let Draco know he was overreacting. "But you made it for me?"

"Yes," he whispered again.

"I love it," Harry whispered back. "It's got character."

Draco heard Hermione's pleased 'humph' from behind them and rolled his eyes. "You really like it?"

"Love it," he corrected, squeezing Draco closer. "And I love you. Thank you."

A burning sensation gathered behind Draco's eyes, and he could see the same sheen of unshed tears in Harry's. Draco, though, still had a sense of pride, and refused to cry in front of Ron and Hermione. So, he pulled Harry closer so that they were just a hair's breadth away.

"Happy Birthday, Harry," Draco whispered into the air between them.

Then, there was snogging. Lots of snogging. Ron, of course, cut into the cake without them. But that was alright. There would be many, many more birthdays to celebrate.
