i'm slowly making progress on this fic, sigh, so have a little bit of eddie taking care of buck

“Hey, Buck.”  Buck opens his eyes, lolls his head to the side, and smiles. “Hi,” he says, soft and easy. He wiggles around, brings the arm not secured to his chest out from beneath the blankets, and makes grabby fingers at Eddie. “C’mere.”  Eddie goes. It’s Buck—Eddie always goes.  He moves forward till he’s beside the bed, right up in Buck’s space. He’s dirty, bruised and a little bloody where the nurses and doctors hadn’t wiped him clean; his left arm rests high on his chest, stabilized by several layers of gauze wrappings and a fitted sling. He’ll be in the sling for two weeks until he comes back for another assessment, but he won’t be cleared for light duty for at least a month and a half.    “Glad to see you’re awake,” he says, lacing his fingers around Buck’s wrist. Buck’s fingers are swollen and bruised and cut up, as if he tried to catch his fall. “You look like shit.”  Buck’s smile is loose and dangerously drowsy. “Feel it.” He twists his hand around so he can tangle his fingers with Eddie’s. “Broken collarbone, cracked ribs, and a badass case of whiplash will do that to you.”  “Could’ve been worse.”  Should’ve been worse, honestly. If Buck hadn’t turned and Eddie hadn’t caught the line quick enough to slow his descent, Buck probably would have had it a lot worse than he does now. Eddie’s grateful—he’ll take a tweaked shoulder over Buck’s battered, broken body any day of the fucking week.  “Yeah.” Buck blinks. His eyes are tired, dark blue and dull, but he’s still smiling. “Had a hell of a time in the ‘copter with Lucy. Miss working with her.”  “I bet you do.” Eddie reaches for the towel on the bedside table, dips it in the canteen of lukewarm water, and wrings the excess out. “Stay still so I can clean your face.”

Buck bringing Tommy to a 118 barbecue and the team all doing the older sibling thing of telling embarrassing stories about buck and buck is sulking but secretly having the best time bc his team is his family and Tommy has his arm around buck the whole time so who cares really, that Tommy is hearing the story of that time he couldn't stand on the ice rink for the fourth time?

And then Bobby gets this smile on his face, and Buck wonders what he's going to bring up, what embarrassing story he's going to have to sit through next

Except Bobby doesn't start telling a buck story.

Bobby asks Tommy if he's seen any chickens lately, and Tommy is burying his face in the hand that isn't on Buck's waist, and oh

This isn't an embarrassing buck story, it's an embarrassing Tommy story.

And buck listens with glee to the whole thing, as Tommy feebly argues that the chicken was armed, and had genuinely proven itself dangerous before giving in and muffling an embarrassed little laugh into Buck's shoulder

And yeah, buck thinks, he could get used to this

Eddie: so, as we both were in army, know Muay Thai, and you have a helicopter, I present you the plan how we will kill the Buckley parents

Tommy:

Tommy: I'm in

Eddie: the only obstacle: Buck will be sad

Tommy: I'll fuck him good, and you will bring Chris for sleepovers for several weeks and it's gonna be fine

Eddie: smart! And deal. The plan starts tomorrow

Buck: I just wanted to let you all know that I have a boyfriend.

Hen: Congrats Buck!

Chimney: Wait let us guess! Does he have brown hair?

Hen: Was he in the army?

Chimney: Does his job involve rescuing people?

Hen: Does he have abs for days?

Chimney: Do we know him?

Buck: How did you two know I was dating Tommy?!

Hen and Chimney: WHAT!

Bobby: This thing with Tommy, it's going good? Buck: You just asked that question last week. Bobby, rambling: Right. Of course. Just a check in. Tommy's good people, so I understand there's no problem for you to talk about with me — Buck, grins: Do you want me to talk to you about my relationship, pops? Bobby: Yes, please.

the progression from "there's a morning snack and a midday snack" and "20 bucks for pizza" buck looking after his friend's kid to "bobby's famous lasagne: 6 types of cheese cooked to perfection" buck cooking for his family to "that's makes me your sous chef" teaching his kid how to cook is making me go so feral.

With the way they write Tommy and the direction things take (unless they throw dramatic events and a weird change of behavior from Tommy), Buck being on Eddie's will as Chris' legal guardian won't change a thing in Buck and Tommy's relationship.

When you meet someone older than 30 years old, you know they have a past, they already started a life path, even if they don't stay on the same one all their life. And at Tommy's age, you know that. Meeting someone means meeting their past, their commitments, their relationships, etc. You're a new addition in a life that is already full of its own things.

So while Buck becoming the legal guardian would change their life as a couple/family, it wouldn’t destroy it unless Buck keeps it a secret for years which would be an absolutely stupid thing to make him do. This is something you talk about pretty early in a serious relationship. Also Tommy knows Eddie, he probably knows how things are going with his family, etc. And he knows how Buck is so dedicated to the people he loves, and that's also a part of Buck that Tommy loves so much. I'm sure he'd be proud.

“Good talk.” Eddie jokes, earning a surprised chuckle, and he can’t help it, he leans in to press one more kiss to Buck’s lips.

“Very good.” Buck responds, grinning from ear to ear. “We should have talks like this more often.”

“Oh, we will.” Eddie responds, leaning in once more. He just can’t get enough. “We’ll do so much talking.” he teases, their lips brushing as he speaks, and Buck laughs and shakes his head slightly, the movement pulling him away from Eddie, and Eddie has to force himself not to pout, wanting to be as close to Buck as possible, never moving away. Maybe it’s for the best, because otherwise Eddie would not be able to let him out of his arms right now, and they unfortunately can’t just stand here forever. “But we need to do some actual talking first.” he says, leaning back to look into Buck’s shiny blue eyes.

“Yeah.” Buck’s smile is so soft and bashful, but still the brightest thing Eddie’s ever seen. “This is happening, right? You and me?” he asks suddenly, quietly and almost with a hint of shyness, and Eddie can’t have him doubting this, doubting them.
